Very kind and respectful to students

Heidi's a nice teacher and I can tell she really enjoys teaching. Her quizzes are pretty easy as long you study. However I think using the same textbook will help people stay on teh same page as her a little better.
lots of unexpected quizes she tries to cover too much information without spending enough time going over it nice lady rough class
Very interesting woman and instructor. She made her teachings quite clear and was nice and pleasant to those that needed futher assistance.
Grazes over information then you're supposed to know everything about it.
awesome teacher, will talk over things untill you understand.
She is very disorganized and tests were not clear. Never used the $160 book. She taught Psychology 213. I would strongly advise taking this class from someone else. Most of my class failed.
She chose more useful areas, like brain anatomy and animal behavior, than a typical psych class. Not always clear from class to test, be sure to show date/time of e-submissions.
Dr. Shaw clearly cares about the educational welfare of her students. She takes time to make sure they understand class material, and provides positive, constructive criticism whenever necessary. She incorporates innovative teaching techniques at every possible opportunity. It's a joy to have her as a teacher.
Moves a little too quickly through the topics and doesnt seem to thouroughly answer questions
Kina unclear on grading. Told me I did a great job on my final presentation and my grade actually dropped a full grade. Wonder how that is when i supposedly did a great job?
Most of the material was explained very well. My only issue with Dr.Shaw was that she didn't explain things as thoroughally as she needed to which left us in the dark a bit. Awesome prof, though! Very intelligent and made learning fun! Tough tests.Keep every test to review for final! Seriously!!
Honestly really love Heidi's personality. She's super passionate & her work with the chimpanzees at central is so inspiring, it's pretty sweet. This course is HARD. Expected more biology-less "psychology research studies." I'd rather know the results of the studies than the measurements, but it's a PSYC class. Lots of work, kinda stressful :(
Great teacher! always on time and prepared, and always willing to help you.
She was soo nice. The hardest part of the class is the end-of-quarter project, but not because of the actual project, just because your team members are bound to be idiots.
Excellent teacher. Shaw is a very kind woman. Her class is difficult but she will go out of her way to help you in anyway. A lot of class members failed, but this is a 200 level psych class and those people also never turned in their work. Study hard and you will enjoy the class.
She is nice but very tough on the grades. Things are unclear on the quizzes and you have to be able to quickly adapt to her teaching style. The End Of Quarter project was pretty stupid because it ends up being a presentation in the end and all the work leading up to it is virtually useless in the presentation. Decent workload size.
I was in a learning community class With Heidi and Tom Mount. The class was alot of fun and all the work was easy except for the tests. Study the vocabulary definitions the most and you will most likely get an A. The EOQ project is hard to get an A on, make sure your poster is amazing and you cite your refrences in your presentation.
She was an excellent teacher, however, the end of quarter project is the absolute worse. The class is kind of tough as well.
HONESTLY, SHE IS NOT A VERY GOOD PROFESSOR. SHE COVERS WAY TO MUCH IN ONE DAY AND DOES NOT GO INTO MUCH DETAIL SO YOU ARE LOST WHEN IT COMES TO TAKING HER TESTS. THE BOOK WAS USED PROBABLY ONE TIME THROUGHOUT THE WHOLE QUARTER. SHE IS NICE BUT I WOULD NEVER TAKE HER AGAIN.
Heidi is never on time to class. She is very sporadic when explaining subjects in class and it is very hard to keep up with what you are supposed to know. Her tests and quizzes are hard. I think she is very smart but doesn't know how to teach.
has good explinations
Nice person, not nice class. Had no problem learning the material, however, the tests are terrible. I'm a great test taker and there was never enough time to finish. Most of the class felt the same. Her response... "This is college, work faster." Like I said nice person, but don't expect and A in her class without some serious work.
One of the better teachers I've had at YVCC. I thought all her material was really interesting. The class is hard and you need to pay close attention as she does teach fast but I could easily get through it because I cared about the things we were learning. Willing to answer questions anytime. Good teacher.
This is a professor who loves what she teaches and it shows. The class itself is challenging but she will give you any help you need and even gives strong hints as to what will be on the tests. Be sure to prepare for the group project as much as possible as it can become cumbersome if you wait and she will be able to tell if you try to wing it!
Those of you saying that Heidi is not a great teacher obviously aren't paying enough attention. Shaw is very helpful for those who seek understanding. She is ALWAYS early to class, replies to emails consistenly and quickly and her tests are the easiest! Great teacher. Extremely nice woman.
I liked her as an instructor and the material is interesting to me, but she is so unclear on a lot of points. The book was totally useless, thankfully I didn't purchase one! She's not nit-picky about stuff but she also contradicts herself a lot too.
shaw is very kind & helpful but the class is hard.the hw is really time consuming because there are allot of questions u have to do,by the time u have to take the test u have like 2 full packets u have to study. eventho its a pysch class it seems that all ur leaning is just how the body changes over time & not how the mind itslef changes with time.
I thought Dr. Shaw was amazing. Not the easiest class, but she is amazing at helping understand the info. and delivering it in a way that is easy to relate to real life situation. People who try will do great in her class and probably really enjoy it. I will absolutely take her for psych 200. Definately a teacher who wants her students to succeed.
I've taken Heidi twice. Great teacher but you won't get good grades for simply showing up. You need to study and actually pay attention. The book IS used, despite others' comments. It is used for worksheets that may not be graded, but are essential to learning the material. Sad I won't be taking her again.
She contradicts herself a lot when it comes to what she wants on assignments. She'll say she wants it one way, but ends up wanting it differently. Very picky when it comes to grading written response questions on exams. Be prepared to study overtime.
Great teacher. Knows her stuff. She's pretty nice and very clearorganized. The class is challenging- not too difficult but not too easy. I learned a lot. She's pretty much everything I look for in a good teacher.
I took Heidi Shaw for Psychology 100 and passed with an A. As long as you attend class, listen to her lectures, take notes you will pass easily. She was really great at answering my questions. I would definitely take a class with her again.
Taking Shaw was awesome-didn't have too long of lectures and even when they were longer, you still got good info that you knew you would need for her tests. Study hard for her tests as she grades it as it is, but also is honest and does her best to prepare you for exactly what will be on the test/quiz. I loved Shaw & her humor, yes to take again!
Very confusing, at times its hard to understand her lectures . Tests are hard
Fairly easy class. As long as you pay attention and take notes during her class the tests will be a breeze. Anything and everything she writes on the board take notes on. Dr. Shaw doesn't waste time on irrelevant subject matter, she simply tells you what she cares about and what she cares about WILL be on the exams.
Shaw is one of my favorite people ever. She was a great psych prof, yes, but was someone that I could go to to talk about anything psych ( my intended major). She helped me figure out 4 year college course requirements, talked about careers for me, and did everything in her power to help me along in my goals. So thankful i got to know her!
She is a very knowledgable doctor and cuts no slack, but gives good, fun lectures.
Heidi's class is difficult because its not well taught. She uses 5 min minilectures instead of full lectures. In the 1st month of class she had given us only 40 mins of lectures. She expects you to know material that's not in the textbook. I am an A student and work hard but her quizzes asked for things not in the book or her materials handed out.
Took this class online which is a mistake. She uses mini lectures to teach which are not very clear. She's not very knowledgeable with canvas which caused many hiccups and she's rude and condescending. Stay far away from her online classes. I've heard her in class instruction is better. Do yourself a favor and find a different instructor.
Really good teacher I loved being in her class, her lectures were always interesting. Her test go along with her lectures so pay attention and take notes in class. Fairly easy class overall.
Heidi Shaw is one of the most considerate professors I have ever had. She is extremely fair in grading and basically gives you free bonus points in return for really minimal tasks. All tests are multiple choice and I passed with a B because my guessing game was off. Overall a great professor who will stop at nothing to help you understand something
She is not very clear on what she expects. Her syllabus says to NEVER ask what material will be covered on the tests/quizzes. So basically you have to know everything in just a couple days. She has about three discussions a week, and you're not graded more on if you know the material, but that you engage with other students. I don't recommend.
This class is an absolute joke. The point of the class is to become an internet troll and argue with your peers about whether you think they understand a concept or not. Then on finals week this teacher will finally and very harshly grade you on said online conversations and finally get to grading a couple of your 5 exams, always harshly.
This class needs to be one EVERYONE can take. Its a 101 class and the instructor basically expected everyone to be at a advanced level. The canvas assignments are very unorganized and when you do what is told of you on an assignment youre told thats only C work if you want better you have to go above and beyond. Shaw was very scattered/messy.
Very Very Very very Unorganized, you will fail because of her
Terrible Professor. EXTREMELY disorganized and a very tough grader. Avoid at all costs
I would not recommend this class AT ALL. She is very disorganized and is all over the place with her lectures. We pay $60 to do "email etiquette" that has absolutely nothing to do with class. I dropped this class. Al I can say to you is do not take this class.
Hedi is awesome and takes away the power away from high school lack of teaching method. She works with you. People who don't like her are usually lazy and are focused on turning in sloppy work and expecting high grade (for effort ). She teaches work that can be applied to real world setting. You gain more than just a grade.
Her grading sucks
Very unorganized.
Impossible prof. Her syllabus says students deserve Cs. Tests are trick questions. Even knowing all the information needed the multiple choice is a lot like it is this but its also this so choose which one you think Id want to be the right one. Coming from a hard working student with all As, Im never take her classes again.
Shes a good professor, but can be unorganized. Her exams arent too bad because she gives you a study guide and most of the material on the study guide is on her exams. For the final she let us use our notes. Also participation matter in group discussions because they are worth a lot, but its not hard to get points on the discussions.
I took this class online (not by choice, it was changed before the start). She didn't seem too comfortable teaching online classes. She didn't release grades until the middle of the quarter and was super hard to reach. I feel I would've liked it more on-campus. There is a lot of material, but the worksheets she provided were very helpful for tests.
Biggest thing, very unorganized, I missed 3 things because I couldnt find them. She teaches email etiquette for $60, has nothing to do with Psych. You have to participate in this huge group chat on canvas everyday which is extremely unorganized too. Its a disaster. Dont take her class. I was constantly stressed.
The first half of quarter was hard getting used to her rules. She got lazy with few assignments for the rest of the quarter, just tests. Have to pay $60 for email etiquette that was tacked on the class. The group discussions are hard to get full points for, you have to really reach to get full points. The tests are trick questions. Don't recommend
Professor Shaw cares about this course very much and she prepares you to work in the physiology field. She grades based off her rubrics so read those carefully and she does give extra credit. This isnt an easy A class and you have to work for it. Discussions on canvas are important so follow up on them and the exams are all multiple choice.
Shaw was not the absolute best. Taking this class online didnt help either. A typical week would be reading a chapter, take notes, a worksheet, mini quizzes, a discussion with MINIMUM 20 comments, and an exam. This is the workload for one week. I didnt enjoy this class at all, it covers so much in such small weeks.
Very unorganized, tough grader, and very hard to get discussion points.
Would not recommend this class to anyone. Her discussion post is way too heavy, expects you to always be answering people all day. You need to post 20 comments in every discussion post. This class was very stressful for me.
Be aware that when you are signing up for this class, you are committing to signing on daily through Sundays. Her discussion posts require at LEAST 20 responses within her unrealistic standards. Would not take her class again. I will say, however, that she responded quickly to emails, and as a person seemed nice enough.
Was a quite difficult course to take compared to other psychology classes I have taken. Lots of homework and expectations when it comes to discussion posts, if you do not participate your grade will struggle.
Dr. Shaw is an amazing professor. Her instructions are clear and if you misunderstand anything, she is ready and more then happy to help. Discussion are not as hard as others make it seem. Read what is assigned watch the videos and take notes. Her videos are key! Fill out the study guides! She gives you the answers if you pay attention!
She makes you pay sixty bucks for a code that teaches you how to send emails (not worth it). Her tests were difficult and she requires at least 20 responses on discussions. Overall the information is interesting and she is helpful and accessible outside of class.
This class isn't hard if you read the textbook. Her exams are just a collection of questions from the other quizzes. If you catch what's right on the quizzes, you're set for the exams. She comes across as intimidating but she's very nice as long as you do your work. 20 replies in discussions, but pro tip: reply to everyone and ask them questions.
I absolutely adore Dr. Shaw! She has been my biggest supporter through this whole quarter! I will say that this course is very difficult and harshly graded. Concepts are hard, but it is a great class to truly learn about psychology. I would definitely take this class again and highly recommend if you are a hard worker!
Professor Shaw is great, the only thing I really disliked about this class is the discussions, expect a discussion post every week and you will have to reply multiple times throughout the week.
Racist
Would not recommend her at all, expects you to participate in class discussions and log on everyday to go back and forth which you learn nothing from. Will sometimes ignore you if you have trouble and need help getting something resolved.
Great Professor and very caring. Yes the discussions can be time consuming but will help in the long run. If you communicate with her she will try the best to help. Recommend her for sure
Dr. Shaw is not mean in any way or a bad teacher but she is a pretty tough grader. She requires minimum 20 posts for every discussion and you need to post over at least 3 days. She uploads lectures which are helpful but she takes forever to grade. Overall the only cons were discussion posts and the tough grading.
She is epitome of a teacher who sucks at her job. She has been teaching for a very long time and if your discussions or comments are "detected for Ai" even tho you did it yourself she will give a zero. Super hard to reach out to and always makes it seem like it's your fault. Do not take her.
I took this online course, and the biggest advice is to read the text bool, watch lectures and take good notes. Discussion post may be challenging but fairly easy if you do the work required.
I took psych100 & 200. I was going to wait & rate her at the end of my psych200 but she had a family emergency and we got a new prof. The discussion posts are not hard. Log in everyday, ask questions, post multiple times. Lectures are quick. Around 1chap a week. I found it to be a good class & if u do the work(which isn't a lot IMO) you'll pass.
If you do not do your team meetings with perfectly spaced posts per day, you lose points. She is SUCH A TOUGH GRADER. She does not go back over quizzes/tests that are pregraded online. What you get is what you get. You only get one shot for everything. She takes forever to grade and does not respond to comments on posts.
Dr. Shaw is great! She admits when she makes mistakes, she is all about fairness. She isn't a tough grader. Do what is needed & you'll do great. She asks for 20 posts in discussions, it's not that much to ask. She is quick to answer, open to help when I email her. She takes a while to grade BUT you can do quizzes late, no deduction.
Lots of quizzes. You have discussions that require 20 posts where you learn nothing because everything is repetitive. 5 people = 100 posts. It's like she wants you to fail. Takes forever to grade. Students didn't know their actual grade to tell if they should drop or not.
She's the first professor I seen that does not care about her students. Do not take this class or her, not worth it. She's also very rude, like I don't pay her to give me attitude. Be so for real.
Stay clear unless you don't have a job, family or other classes. She requires multiple posts everyday, but if you do so you get a C. She says to “go above and beyond “ to get an A. So 30-40 posts in a 3-4 day period. Along with her 3-4 quizzes and 1-2 tests a week. She's a hypocrite, expects perfection but doesn't grade your stuff for a month.
I am a very successful student but I have never felt so incapable or put down by a teacher in my life. 20 posts per discussion a week or you will fail. Preaches professionalism and respect but you will never receive the same. Constructive criticism? No, just straight to failing.
Discussion posts take up a lot of time. She makes you purchase an expensive program which is only used once the entire quarter, useless. The lectures she uploads are old, outdated and are originally for other classes. Canvas is set up in a way that is very overwhelming, overload of useless information. Grading is very tough.
DO NOT TAKE HER. She takes forever to grade assignments. Her grading rubric is ridiculous. She assigns lots of homework daily, like DAILY Monday- Sunday. Exams weekly, on top of quizzes in between. You can't take a break in her class.
Doesn't grade in a timely manner AT ALL. Assigns cumulative work then doesn't grade for months. You better hope you understood the assignment because if you did it wrong, all of them will be wrong and you will have no opportunity to learn or grow because you don't get feedback until 6-10 weeks after you've completed the work.
