she is a great teacher it's an easy a as long as you do her papers. the papers are not long they are just responses and summaries. take it if you have the chance it's like elementary school all over again.

She is the easiest teacher. You have to go to class once in a while, take noteson stupid things and you will be sure to get an A. Also may want to kiss her butt by acting slightly interested in the class and the crap she talks about. If she knows ur name you will be sure to get a good grade

she is really into her class and she wants u to be into it also..she gives way too many projects but shes really nice IF SHE LIKES YOU..i thought dny was going to be an easy A but it was a lot of work and i still only got a B+...

VERY enthusiastic about the class. She really opens up your mind to a new way of thinking. Easy A, can redo written assignments to improve grade, lots of field trips. Take her!!!

i think she is nice, if she sees you doing ur work then you'll get e good greade but thats all about....so take her for DNY she is great

Make sure you attend the field trips in this class and hand in good response papers. Definately an unusual class. I recommend it if you are usually a good student and do your work. She's an enthusiastic teacher though and it's an interesting course. Just don't expect an A if you don't do the work or attend class.

She's so passionate about her work, you'll rarely find professors who love what they do. I love the way she teaches, she doesn't lecture, but opens your mind and has you thinking in way you've possibly ignored. I definately recommend taking her!

She is very passionate about what she teaches. This class is very different from others. Other DNY classes go to musuems and my class will be making music and banging on drums, fun and unique. You will get an A if you come to class and hand in your work. Plus she gives out extra credit

OMG!! Easy class!! Write all the papers about the performances and trips in detail yiu will be fine!! No tests at all!! The final is basically a creative project! But she is a great professor and you learn soooooo much!!

Workload was a bit beyond my expectation. Lessons were very interesting and fun..it really opens your mind up!! She's very nice and understanding. But you really gotta do your work

She does seem a little strange but she such a nice lady. Easy, easy class. You have to be dumb if you don't get an A. No tests, maybe 1 hw but doesnt really count. You have to go to at least 4 trips but there all interesting, write a 1 1/2 pg paper on them and thats it. The final is a creative project on w/e you want. Defanitely TAKE HER!!!!!

Heidi is hands down the greatest professor at st. johns. She is the sweetest and nicest lady you will ever meet. I would absolutely take her again!

This was a great class. it was a lot of fun, but you had to be open to actually doing the activities that she had planned. You do have a paper to write after each event you go to and you are supposed to keep a journal. There is a creative project due at the end, but if you keep your mind open and try, you will do well in her class and have fun too.

Very nice lady overall...class is very interactive and we use instruments a lot...easy grade if you do all of the hw and pretend to be amused by her lessons...had to buy 3 textbooks but only used each once...midterm is long but fair...final project is too but we have much more time...hates lateness and absences.

SHE IS the EASIEST DNY TEACHER.. in my opinion she's a little psycho because one time she got into a car with 4 random black guys no offense but she didnt know them and she did it all because of the dny trip.. thats dedication. i would only recommend if you WANT an easy A.. she gives STUPID hw but better than the other, harder DNY professors

Dr. Upton is one of the most passionate and intelligent professors at St. John's. If you are opened minded you will learn about yourself in this class. There will be some times when you think "why is she making me do this" but as you progress you start to understand. People who complain about her are lazy Long Island kids who fail in life. Take her

You will be overwhelmed with work, in the last two weeks (4 papers may be). However she is going to give you an A at the end. Just a lot of writing, not hard at all.

I LOVE THIS LADY. It's definitely a hands on class that you will only enjoy unless you put yourself out there. 4 response papers to every form of art that is gone over in class. My class enjoyed our experience with Prof. Upton and I'll probably never be close to classmates like that again.

she is a little weird however, she is really cool. her class is really hands on and some of the projects she gives doen't always make sense. however, she is really easy on her gradeing and is a really down to earth person. i have no interest in Art and i really liked her class. the workload wasn't much and the class was kinda fun too.

Upton does what most professors can't: get students to cooperate and learn from each other. She's a very down to Earth person and is passionate about what she teaches. I thought the class was a joke originally but I really grew to enjoy it. There are 4 response papers (3 pages each, a joke if you don't procrastinate). She's a very fair grader.

The class is a drag but its very hands on. We went on field trips and she requires you to write a three page response for each one. This semester she gave a heavier work load from what she claims but its not too bad, she's an easy grader. Just participate (say crap about how art makes you "feel" no b.s) and make sure your attendance is high!

Just post your homework on the website page and you will pass.

She used to teach this class differently but with us she started to teach about homelesness in NYC. Our class was kind of experimental. She basically asked our opinion and dead lines werent firm. Not a lot of work but she grades hard. Only thing is you might have to do service learning which is an outside class thing. Choose grand central!!

She puts alot of efort and interest into teaching, great person and weird at the same time. 4 papers 3 pages long; makes you go to stupid trips. Boring class, don't learn much. Easy A. Attendence is important and you HAVE to paticipate.

Very easy professor. 1 major paper at the end that took place of the final. short assignments on your opinion of the reading, but they're not hard. easy grader. i got B's on most of my writing assignments but ended up with an A in her class

Dr. Upton really cares about homeless people, and she tries to make the class care as much as she does. You do a lot of readings and posts on your wiki but it's way better than any test/quiz/final. She actually makes you think and want to make a difference. Service isn't too bad if you take Briarwood and get it out of the way ASAP.

I love her sooo much. She is insperational.

She often seems like she is thinking about something in her head and then comes back to earth and realizes she's teaching. She is very deep and has many feelings rushing through her. She is nice and chill. She is an easy A. You write 4 papers and go to a play; no tests or quizzes.

She is a genuine person! She believes in what she teaches and makes you get into it! ( if you are up for it) She teaches you to own your education. Because in all honesty, we all pay for it, but forget to own it! I recommend her if you want to know what its like to have a real professor!

I don't know why people had an issue with Professor Upton, I think she is awesome... I def take the time to see the beauty in life now :) She's the best!

Undoubtedly one of the best teachers/professors to have ever touched my life. People who have problems with her and bash her are ignorant, and close-minded, or belong in a cubicle for 50 hours a week. Best, most inspiring professor i've had thus far.

I love this class, and I think that any freshman taking the DNY course should have Upton. The only drawback is that there is a photography aspect with the Homelessness course, including a photo essay. There is also a volunteering component as well, that is 20% of your final grade.

So passionate! She's absolutely amazing. Truly inspiring and definitely interesting. A few trips and a few assignments but if you put your heart into it you'll do very well. Easy A. Such a great class, really taught me how to appreciate life around me more.

easy class if you do the work. no midterm or final. no tests or quizzes in between. there is a final project. you just have to respond to chapters and each unit (there are 4) so you need the book but its cheap. have to go to a play + museum on your own/pay for it on your own which was annoying. worth taking, nice lady. takes attendance. i got an A

To be fair, she cares a lot about the course... which is nice, because you learn some incredibly interesting facts about New York. This class had more work than any of my other classes, though... a lot of busy work and weekly upkeep that was slightly unrealistic for the type of class it was- which is a required freshman course. Not recommended.

she really cares about her students and what she teaches. I thought her class was a pretty easy A. For the class we had a wiki page where we wrote the homework (easy hw i.e. responding to a webpage or what we did in class) the trips were actually really fun and everyone in the class got super close during them =]

she's a pretty easy a. come to class and participate just a little you'll be fine. the class got really close during the trips..in the beginning you're like 'i can't believe i'm wasting a saturday here...' but they were actually kinda fun..and she's just really nice in general and cares about her students and what she teaches

Dr.Upton is the best DNY prof. Hers is mostly based around art. There is a lot of assignments but they are easy and actually fun. At first the class seems boring and dull, but her passion and the activities will make you appreciate the class. You actually do "discover NY". The work is all on your wiki page and she allows you to put some on late.

Do the work and you will learn a great deal. She is very helpful and will answer any and all questions you may have. At times I thought there was a lot of work for a core class but don't fight it-take it seriously and you will do fine. Show interest and show up you will get an A.

She is such a nice lady and you can tell she is so passionate about teaching this course, which i appreciated. The DNY i took was art based and I enjoyed it. Homework is to post on a wiki page and you have a photo project and mandatory field trips, which are fun we got to listen to the NY Philharmonic at Lincoln Center! TAKE HER! :D

EASY A!!!! No midterms or tests, one final and its reflection of the course- Easy. Homework are just to post on a wiki page, which is very simple and not a big deal. There are mandatory trips- seems annoying but they are actually fun. For most assignments you just have to take pictures of the city and reflect on them.. TAKE HER FOR AN EASY A.

Professor Upton is fabulous. Without a doubt, take her! She is super sweet and funny. Her class is filled with fun trips. Homework is just reflections on what you discussed that day. Course material is interesting. The work given is very easy. No tests, no papers. A few projects and an eportfolio at the end. Great class! Easy A. Take her!

Work for this class is time consuming and you really need to act like you care cause she's really into it. As long as you do all the assignments like she wants you to, in detail, you're good. Everything is mostly done on a wiki page. Best part about this class was the trips to the city. No tests or anything, just projects and final portfolio.

Easy class but a lot and I mean A LOT of work. If you're someone who isn't into art and just taking the class for the credit, maybe you want to think twice before taking her. She gives a few papers to do and you have to do it EXACTLY as she says or she takes off a lot of points or gives you an INC. Takes this class way too seriously but she's nice.

Easiest class ever. She cares a lot and gets really deep into everything. 3 units - visual arts, music, and dance. She makes class really interactive and gets irritated if you don't participate. 3 reflection papers. They're really easy if you include everything she says to. Field trip, play with instruments, and tango dancers come dance for us.

Easiest DNY, no tests, 3 projects. Just make sure you show up to class and go on the trips. She's great tho, be open and talk in class and she'll love you. Put some effort into the projects and it's a guaranteed A.

This was such a fun class, with everything you get to do and experience Professor Upton keeps it engaging and educational. You get to explore different planes of art, dance and music in ways you would not have expected.

Great professor. Loved her DNY class, learned a lot. She's a really sweet lady. It's a college course so don't expect it to be a breeze but its definitely doable! Just do what she asks for and you will deff get an A. Her DNY was art based.

Most classes were boring, and there are three required trips. The trips definitely allow you to become close friends with some of your classmates. This DNY class focuses on NYC art. Gives not too much homework, yet the three main projects are time consuming if you want to get a good grade.

I enjoyed Professor Uptons class. We went on trips, did activities and class, and were able to reflect on them through various activities. There were no exams or papers, but there were several projects. I think Professor Upton is a tough grader but she is willing to help. You have to be dedicated to succeed.

Professor Upton is passionate about the Arts and she is an amazing professor. If you are serious about the Arts then please take Dr. Upton. You will learn a lot and get to go on performances that are amazing! Her grading criteria is very straight forward and everything is very organized. She is very understanding and caring for all her student. A++

Attendance matters. Grading criteria is somewhat vague because the class is about the arts, but put in the effort and you should get an A. Participation matters, it's one of the first things she talks about. You have to go on a lot of trips though, so try to make a friend in class.

She seems pretty intimidating at times, but respectable teacher. Very passionate about the class. She is a tough grader though. Trips matter. Make sure to participate in class so she knows you care and are attentive.

Suuuuper amazing professor. Had her for DNY and decided to take her again for my art elective. Very nice professor and makes the teaching very clear. She cares about her students but also wants everyone to participate. KEEP AN OPEN MIND. Some light reading and she has everyone make a wiki page but if you keep on top of it it's easy.

This class was incredibly easy. Her use of the Wiki as opposed to Blackboard was inconvenient but manageable. There is not much hw and the class is mostly chill. She can be boring sometimes and feels passionate about the class but if you can sit through it and do the work, you'll get an A.

Prof. Upton's class was such a pleasure to take. At the beginning of the course I did not know what to expect and was quite confused, but the class taught me to think about the world in a new light. Assignments are all fair and fairly graded. No exams but attendance in class is necessary to keep up. If you can't attend, she is understanding.

Dr. Upton is an amazing professor; she demands dedication and focus, but you can learn so much if you apply yourself and keep an open mind. The students who didn't like her DNY class were mostly the ones who didn't listen to her instructions, or those who were lazy and unwilling to think outside the box. Definitely take her class, it's worth it!

Dr. Upton is amazing! This class is super fun and easy. She truly allows you to see the world in a new way. No exams, just a paper for each unit and a final creative project. Just keep up with the hw assignments and use your voice in class discussions and you'll do great!

Dr. Upton is great and really cares about her students. Not much homework, just a paper due at the end of each of the 3 units. I took her online course and we were put into breakout rooms every class to do assignments and then share with the rest of the class. Great professor and great person!

HW is minimal/easy. However, because their is basically no workload, she likes that you engage in conversation. Which isn't a big deal unless you hate speaking. NO essays, tests, quizzes. She is really passionate about what she's teaching, she wants her students to learn and view world differently. Definitely recommend for DNY.

There are very few assignments and they are all basic if you have the chance to take her class do not miss out on the opportunity. My final was a presentation on the town I live in. It was extremely fun and easy. As long as you show up to class, pay attention, and complete your assignments to the best of you ability the class is an easy A.

Prof. Upton manages to keep you engaged in this class at all times she's very caring. Lots of opportunities to participate, including in group assignments. The course was an easy A, as there's no quizzes or tests. Just some assignments and one project at the end, which wasn't bad really. Always ended class early too. Recommended!

There are only a few assignments in this class. It is truly an Easy A. You do have to work a lot with the other people in your class. Very kind woman who has many funny stories. She wants each student to succeed.

Great class, especially if youre entering the college scene. Professor Upton is very passionate about what she teaches, and although social interaction is a must in this class, it makes the lectures more comprehensive, and allows you to engage with the people in your class, as well as the professor. Good class, great for freshmans taking DNY.

Taking her class will inspire you. She is very passionate about what she teaches and wants to spark the same things in her students. As long as you show her that you care and don't leave your assignments for last-minute (especially the final project) she will give you a really good grade. Can be a bit judgy but she always means well. Funny & smart.

Fair class, get your work done and you will be set. Tough grader but you can resubmit assignments to get a higher grade. The three-hour lectures can be excessive, just sit through it, participate and you will be good.

cool DNY & fun final. barely any hw, no quizzes, very passionate about her class and wants you to be too. at first the class seems like its not gonna be fun but its a nice environment. very easy class but learned a lot. final is a project where u research an area using the skills u learn in class. do it early and try hard in it and ur set w/ an A

I didn't find anything too difficult in her class. There are a few reading assignments where you would have to read, which wasn't too long, and answer the question she provides. Gives good feedback for every assignment. In the finals, you choose a location and create a presentation. I didn't notice any favoritism unlike the rating below me.

I'm biased ofc but she's such an amazing prof. it was truly life-changing imo & I'm not even a humanities major. you can tell she really cares about her students. there were three units & a lot of writing involved, but it's doable & an easy A. a final project at the end where you have to create something. there was a concert lecture & it was >>>

Cool and interesting lady, you can tell she's passionate about the course. Lots of group work, so get ready to talk. 2 trips per semester, kind of tedious but interesting. GOLE collaboration seemed cool but became annoying because communication was hard. Overall, pretty chill for an honors course and Upton is a really good professor.

She gives homework assignments every class but they are all easy if you put in the effort and do the readings. She accepts late work if you make a good reason for it.

She is passionate and a clear easy grader. If you behave, show interest, and do the work as described its easy sailing. However she has a short temper and yells or curses at students if they misbehave or are seen not paying attention which is honestly entertaining to watch.

Class is a little annoying at times and Upton does come off a little strong at the beginning of the semester. Class is not that hard and she is an easy grader. 3 ”work of art experiences” and one of them was off campus on the weekend. Class is a little annoying at times but overall it's not that bad.

Passionate and kind professor. Makes sure to know everyone's name. 3 trips: Audubon Mural Project, Compost Collective, and Hudson Yards. 5 reading responses. Cares about ur personal opinions on responses too rather than just facts. Field guild presentation and document worth half of grade, so work hard on those and follow the rubric to do good!

She wasn't that bad. Just show up to class and go on to the trips. She is very passionate about the class but some of her ideas are really dumb (ie. looking up at the ceiling to draw it). Its not a bad class but also i'd compare your choices if you see something you really want to take instead. No final exam tho, thats worth something.
