Productive classes, relevant homework, good lectures that make sense. She makes the dense material in the linguistics classes and concepts easy and very well-presented. Her (upper division) classes have a small, friendly, accessible feel.

Readings are confusing, but lectures are clear. You really have to study for the tests.

Interesting, laid back type of course. Homework is about the amt u get in elementary school. Not much material covered which makes studying a breeze. Go to class, pay a little attn then nothin to do outside of class. Go for it! Anything less then it wouldnt be considered a class.

Great professor. Great Classes (Ling 20, 21, 111, 121, 141). Good projects. Interesting papers. I learned a lot in her classes. She goes slow enough to understand the concepts.

I have no idea what you past people are talking about because Dr. Waltz is one of the best professors at UCR. Not only is she incredibly helpful, she is one of the nicest and sweetest people you'll ever meet. She really cares about her students. I am more than happy to have taken her classes for the last four quarters.

Wow Prof. Waltz is really an amazing person she cares about the students and lends a helping hand when you need it. She has to be one of my favorite Prof. during my 1st year of college.

Ling 20 is so straight forward and Prof. Waltz outlines everything that will be on the exams in the study guides, and homework counts as credit if you do it. She is resourceful and knows what she is lecturing about and her accent is not even bad. Geez, whiners.

The homework is very easy to do and Prof Waltz doesn't give out much. Homework is once a week and it helps a lot towards your grade. Study guides help and attend class regularly.

Dr. Waltz is a fabulous teacher and her passion for linguistics is evident in her lectures. Her door is always open to offer help to those who ask for it. If you show up to class and take the effort to actually participate, you should pass. She presents the subject matter in a fun way and gives lots of opportunities for class participation.

Very nice lady and very humorous. She is thorough and wants to make sure you get it. She is very knowledgeable in her field and is available for questions during office hours. There were only about 8 homework assignments and the tests are easy if you have understood the material. Just pay attention!

Class tends to get really boring!!! But the HW is a breeze and if you study, it's sommoth sailing. A good thing about Heidi is that shes very sacrcastic in a very funny way.

Heidi is an asset to UCR. She should be a professor of something, and not just a senior lecturer. Her class was very informative and eye-opening. She repeats things until you get them. The tests are mainly multiple choice and can be a little tricky, but if you have studied, you can get a near-perfect score. She makes linguistics interesting.

First of all, how is she a poor teacher? The material is so EASY and she is always available for help! As for the unprofessional comment: I think YOU are mistaken when you think she was being unprofessional when she had embarrassed that student in front of the whole class. How do you come to the final and not know what PP stands for?!

Great professor, very friendly. If you're not into linguistics, don't take this class because...like the course name says... that's what it's about. Requires moderate studying. I spent about 4 hours a week reading the book and another hour or two with notes. Not an easy A, but if you study and show up you should have no problem getting one.

Like many said, don't take the class "just for fun." I LOVE Professor Waltz! She makes a relatively dull subject seem very interesting. She has such a snarky sense of humor and she teaches extremely well. Her explanations are clear, she is ALWAYS available for help, and will repeat something if she knows her students don't understand it.

Prof. Waltz is a great teacher and her enthusiasm for her work really shows through her teaching. She makes sometimes tedious work fun and grades fairly. As long as you keep up with the course, an A is no problem.

A very easy class, just rely on the book and you don't have to go to lecture. But if you do go, you'll pretty much have no use for the book. She seems like a nice lady who really liked what she taught. Recommended!

Dr. Waltz is incredibly sweet. The class is easy and if you attend lecture you will do wonderful on the midterm and final. She is funny and although she has a slight accent she is 100% understandable. I recommend this class!

Professor Waltz is extremely enthusiastic about Linguistics, and it's hard not to be interested in this course with her apparant love of the subject. The class is pretty easy as long as you go to class and take notes during lecture. Waltz can be a little temporamental, but as long as you don't ask stupid questions in class you'll be fine.

She has a definite love for linguistics! She always made herself availible whenever possible and she answers any questions, big or small! She has a bit of an accent but she can make very abstract concepts crystal clear! I never really had to read much because she always went over the core stuff. It was quite an enjoyable class!

Dr. Waltz is extremely kind and considerate, and is always available to help during office hours. Definitely one of the better teachers in the Comparative Literature dept.

If you want to learn about the origin and history of language, this is the class for you. This class is easy as long as you do the readings, go to class, and do the homework. Make sure to ask questions if you are confused. You may find this class difficult if you don't attend class. She gives answers IN CLASS for homework and tests.

i can honestly say , that if you didn't pass this class it's your fault. if you study you will pass. she's helpful when you talk to her. she tells you to read the chapter more than once. do what she says and you'll do fine.

Don't listen to the other guys. This class is fun and easy. You have homework every week, but it is always less than five questions. And it is very easy. Just go to class, do your reading, and take very good notes and you will do great. The stuff she goes over in class is what is on the test. Office hours are also helpful as are the TA's.

This class is much more than just pronouns adjectives etc its not that bad. She is super helpful,as long as you do all your homeowork you can pass. All you have is homework assignments here & there, 1 midterm, 1 final. She does not ask much of you. I failed the midterm did all my homework and asked her for help for the final and got a B.

I don't know why everyone rates her so poorly. I really liked this class. I had to work hard for my A, but it is not impossible. This was my favorite class last quarter.

I have no idea why everyone is rating so badly, the professor is a super sweet lady. How interesting the class is just depends on what your interests are. If you don't like grammar or languages, stay away. Professor Waltz herself is really nice though. She has an accent, but it's easy to understand her. I liked her and the class a lot :)

I hate trees. Failed midterm. Did all the homework. Passed final (I'm assuming) - got a Bminus. Hate trees though. If you're interested in it, take it. if you're good at breaking things down, take it.

Trees were a pain, but she really tries hard to help you understand in lecture. Provides study guides for midterm and final that are really helpful and similar to tests. Homework assignments are given credit no matter what as long as you do them and looks like you tried. Got an A and didn't have to try that hard.

This class is not an easy A class. If you do the readings and pay attention in class, you will survive. Also, I would go to the TAs to just have them check my homework (once a week)and they were very helpful too.

She is a silly funny teacher.Well I thought her class was pretty easy.The class only consists of homework once a week,and midterm and final.The exams, to me,were not hard at all because she actually tells you and gives you what to study for the test.It's all grammar and English. Lecture can be a bit boring but easy. HER CLASS IS SO EASY!

I took Ling 20 and overall it is a good class. You must study though before tests. Her class consists of a midterm and exam and homework due weekly. Make sure to take you homework to a T.A. so they can check it. I probably could've gotten a higher grade had I studied more. However, be aware that lecture can get BORING! Overall, it is a good class.

I took her Grammar class and really the most important thing to learn is the verb types. Make sure to understand those. The class overall was challenging, but simple. Attendance is not mandatory, but is greatly recommended. Use of the book is required (and pretty useful). Class consists of 1 midterm, 1 final, and around 8 homeworks. Pay attention!

I loved this class. The professor is fun and really helpful during office hours. After taking this class I even decided to major in linguistics. It's a really interesting class, but if you're not a language person, you probably won't like it.

Difficult professor but sticks to the point with her information. As long as you read the book and know the terms from the book you will get a good grade. Very helpful and kind if you go to her office hours. Highly recommend going (even for Ling 20 also)

First thing she said in the first lecture, "Are you sure you want to take this class? You are very brave if you do." Super scared at first but she is very clear in her lectures and helpful during office hrs. Very approachable. Read the book before class and before midterm/final and you will be fine. Homework every week. Definitely TAKE this class!

I am not sure why so many students had a hard time in this class. She's not a bad teacher and the subject is really simple. I did not use the book once and just attended every lecture (I did same thing for Ling20). I passed both classes with an A, if you're stuck go to her office hours and she'll help you thoroughly.

She's easy to understand and the homework really helps. I love her accent, it's so cool. I miss like 6 classes and read about 15 pages in total but still have got an A- in the class. Just do the homework and figure out what you got wrong, get the right answers. Study from the correct homework and you're set.

Really sweet, going to office hours helps. Simple class if you put in the effort obviously. Memorization skills are good when you reach the IPA part. It's a really interesting subject, would recommend.

The class in general was super tough, but she did a great job teaching it. She teaches directly from the book, if you don't have it, you will not pass. Homework is straight forward, tests are somewhat tough, I would create a study group with other students. You need to study for this class to pass, it's definetly the hardest subject I've taken.

Dr. Waltz is a good professor. It's a very easy class if you pay attention to what she says and do the readings. She expects that you've read the chapter before lecture (it says so in the syllabus) and the lectures are basically watered down summaries of the chapter. Tests are exclusively on the lectures. Homework is a breeze.

Dr. Waltz is a pretty good professor. good memorization skills will help. read the book. HW assigned is easy and good cushion points since she gives you full credit regardless if ur answers are wrong. 1 midterm and 1 final. some of the material was interesting, most was boring tho. she is very helpful and sweet. funny in her own way

She's so sweet and nice! Really tries to engage with the class and does in class practices to help students understand the materials. Yes, you do need the textbook to do the hw but tbh you can just get the problems from your friend. I never read the book unless I got stuck in some problems. Tests are all based on her lectures. Overall, easy A.

She's FAVORITE person at this University; her lectures are coherent and she is extremely knowledgeable of the field. Mind you, she held this department by herself for many years. I have taken her for most of my years here and I must say I'm glad whenever I take her!!!!!

Everything you need to pass the midterm and final is in the lecture. If you attend the lecture and do readings you'll pass the class no doubt. She has a subtly humorous personality that made the class interesting for me. Follow her directions on homework and you'll do fine. Homework is assigned once a week (for Tuesdays and Thursdays classes).

If you already have a good foundation in grammar, this class will be an easy A, but if not, I can see why a lot found it difficult. Prof has a thick accent & the lecture can be boring, esp b/c she doesn't allow technology in class. But if you show up to every lecture & do the hw, you should do fairly well.

The midterm and the final is all based off of your homework, lectures, and readings. Attendance is not mandatory, but if you miss the first 15min of class, you'll most definitely be lost in your homework. So if you ditch lecture, you'll fail. Overall easy class if you do your stuff.

Awesome professor!! Straight forward class--the bulk of the knowledge is learned in the first few chapters--get to know the material and how to properly identity the functional bits of a sentence and its 'chicken pieces'. Don't make stupid mistakes and if you are on-time on Friday, when homework is submitted, you are actually five minutes late.

You need to go to her lectures even though there's no participation points. Study a ton! There's only hw, a midterm, and a final. You can't fail the midterm or final. Little things graded. Lectures are short and you NEED TO READ the chapters in advance before class starts or you will be lost. You don't read, you fail.

6 verb types, & own rules made this an extremely difficult class. Especially the diagramming. She moves too fast. If brave enough to admit you need more explanation she will slow down & explain again. The main problem: not enough TAs; only 3 for a full class need double. Why? Limited office hours & no alternatives means not enough help.

I can understand why people had a hard-time. If you already have some background in grammar, it would be an easy A. My recommendation is to make sure you go to lecture and if your stuck, go back to the book. She goes really fast so make sure you dont fall behind. Midterm final hw and discussion for overall grade.

Even if minimal effort is put in, you should be able to pass with a C. There are only 7 homework assignments and they take less tan 30 mins to complete. Everything on the study guides is what will be on the midterms and exam. During lecture, she works through examples and thoroughly teaches material. Just make sure you do the assigned readings.

She seems really kind, and is amazing and passionate about what she does. I feel like the discussion would be very helpful, but I didn't have a great TA. The first half of the course is the hardest, so don't drop after the midterm! First half is memorization, second half is more conceptual and interesting, but you actually need to study a bit.

Overall it really wasn't that bad of a class. She doesn't post much of anything online so going to lecture is pretty crucial. You don't really need to read the book unless it's for homework or if you're confused on a concept. Just go to class and you'll be fine.

I'm going to be honest, Prof Waltz was initially boring in the beginning of the quarter. However, as the quarter went on, the material got more interesting and thus she became more interesting. If you like doing grammar in high school, this is the class for you. At first, lectures were boring but they became fun once we started learning how to draw sentence trees, which make up the bulk of the course. Lectures are mandatory since she won't post the notes online.

She taught the subject so well!! I would definitely recommend her. You got to practice and pay attention in class which will make it easier for you to pass. This class certainly gives you another perspective in literature.

I wouldn't recommend this class for people that don't like grammar, but if you do, it's awesome. Prof Waltz is a very clear and enthusiastic lecturer. I learn more from her and I just use the textbook for reference. There's just a midterm, final, and 4 HW assignments in between that can be done in 30 minutes. You'll learn so much from Prof Waltz.

Make sure to buy the book, it's needed for the homework and discussion section. You don't really need to attend class if you're willing to teach yourself through the book. Everything she does in lecture is from the book. Homework is assigned every other week. There is a midterm and final that is based on the topics she teaches, it is an easy class.

Grammar isn't my best subject but she makes the class relatively enjoyable and easy considering the amount of material discussed. She is very sweet and approachable. She goes over everything that will be on the exam so there are no be surprises or trick questions. It helps that she records her lectures to be able to rewatch them while reviewing.

Attendance is mandatory. Her lectures were boring but I found them helpful when I could actually pay attention. She responds back to email and has office hours if you need help. Grade is made up of some homework assignments and the midterm and final. She takes off points for wrong answers on hmwk. Tests are open book. Lots of guides that help too.

Her lecture videos were very long and boring. Theres a couple of assignments, a midterm, and a final. I really couldnt understand the material halfway through the quarter but thats just me.

Her lectures are kinda long but it all is going towards your homework and stuff it isnt random ramble. She has many many office hour opportunities, her lectures are straightforward and she explains everything well. As long as you watch the lectures and read here and there (the bare minimum) you are more than likely to pass! I recommend this class

She is a good professor but the class can be hard if you decide to slack off. The class can be difficult but if you study hard and make sure to get the work done it'll pay off. For those who are looking for an easy class to take I wouldn't recommend.

Graded by 10% discussion attendance,15% midterm, 35% hw (5 assignments each worth 7 points) and 40% final. Lecture is in person but midterm and final were online with open notes and everything. The professor is strict about her rules and stuff but otherwise i thought she was fine. Very easy class if you have any grammar knowledge.

This class was very difficult. You cannot expect to pass without going to lecture. Lectures are not mandatory but Discussions are. I recommend not missing either because lectures help you understand discussions. Waltz will help you if needed. She answers emails quick and will try to adapt to your schedule if you want to meet with her in person.

Honestly, don't believe too many of the bad reviews. This class is a great breadth course and isn't too difficult. If you just follow along with her lectures and take notes (especially on what she clearly states is important) then you'll be fine. If you are struggling, you can just go to her office hours and she is more than willing to help.

Great professor, she's accessible outside of class. Her lectures are very important to attend. If you don't attend then you'll read a lot to pass. Easy grader. Barely gives out homework and the work is very minimal. Easy to pass if you attend her lectures.

Easy but make sure you are organized, please read the syllabus and the textbook, get help from classmates and TA. Not much hw but thats because there was alot to read. lol. 1 mid term, 1 final and half of it were things that you may think you dont need to study, but actually needed too (well for me atleast) she's silly though and caring.

She was very dedicated and was very passionate about the subject. Lectures are not mandatory if you read the book, if you don't read the book attend the lectures. I didn't read a single page of the book and passed the course. The HW is very light and easy, but I highly suggest attending discussions because those are points towards your grade.

She sometimes gives unclear explanations and doesn't explain concepts well. Had to self-teach sometimes. Once I understood the material though, the class was a bit easier, but there's a lot to go over, so by no means was this an easy A. Make sure to pay as much attention in class as you can and study with other people so you can help each other.

This class was very very interesting. Go to lectures, read the book, and participate in lectures if you can (are brave enough.) in my opinion, she is a good professor the subject is just a bit difficult, but I enjoyed the class. Just try to be as active in the class as possible. Prof. Walt says, "You learn best by DOING."

Lectures give great examples of the material, but are expected to self-read outside of class as she briefly goes through the material for each lesson. Attend lectures and keep up with readings. Mandatory discussions that extremely helpful and the tests are weighed heavily. Make sure to understand the keywords from the lectures and textbook.

She was such a sweetie. Idk why people are hating on her sm because the class was easy if you just paid attention. I only read a couple pages of the textbook (it was legit not important at all). I mainly just took notes during the lectures and it was more than enough the pass the exams!

She's a good prof! in my opinion you don't need to read the textbook b/c of the guided learning sheets and if you pay attention in lecture. My few main points though: - Midterm was def harder than final - The content is intuitive (you already know this subconsciously) - If you read the book you can skip lecture - ASK FOR HELP!

There's no lecture attendance but you must go. The textbook is handy, but you will be fine just using the library copy. Fill out her guided worksheets. 20% grade is discussion attendance and easy homework. Prof answers questions pretty well if you ask them clearly. With a few flashcards, you will be fine. This class is totally beginner level. Fun.

Waltz is Amazing! ive had her 2 times, going onto my third next quarter. The material may get difficult but she is the sweetets, willing to explain and wants you to learn! yes you have to pay attention and study, but overall she is an amazing professor who cares about her students.
