Productive classes, relevant homework, good lectures that make sense. She makes the dense material in the linguistics classes and concepts easy and very well-presented. Her (upper division) classes have a small, friendly, accessible feel.

teaches terms that are different in the book. 1/2 hour late for final exam with minimal excuse. things on study guide not on exam. does not put homework online. tests on subjects only minimally discussed in class.

Interesting, laid back type of course. Homework is about the amt u get in elementary school. Not much material covered which makes studying a breeze. Go to class, pay a little attn then nothin to do outside of class. Go for it! Anything less then it wouldnt be considered a class.

THIS CLASS IS DUMB. YOU WILL NEVER USE ANY OF IT AND SHE SWEARS ITS THE BIBLE. NO CURVE. SHES LATE ALL THE TIME AND IF YOU NEED TO GO OVER SOMETHING SHE WONT BE IN HER OFFICE DURING OFFICE HOURS AND IF YOU MAKE AN APPOINTMENT SHE WILL BE THERE 30 MINS LATE.

Always late, she walks in late to class all the time, at least 20 minutes. She came in 35 minutes late to the Mid-term. She teaches different terms that what the book says. Never in her office during her 'office hours'.

Class is much harder than she says, there is nothing you need to know after the first mid term EXCEPT sentence trees, because 60% of the final is on those. She shows up to class late everytime, never there during her office hours, and her english is not very good becuase of her accent. Do not take!

I have no idea what you past people are talking about because Dr. Waltz is one of the best professors at UCR. Not only is she incredibly helpful, she is one of the nicest and sweetest people you'll ever meet. She really cares about her students. I am more than happy to have taken her classes for the last four quarters.

Ling 20 is so straight forward and Prof. Waltz outlines everything that will be on the exams in the study guides, and homework counts as credit if you do it. She is resourceful and knows what she is lecturing about and her accent is not even bad. Geez, whiners.

Waltz's class is super exciting... only if you enjoy listening to the many interpretations of how to sound out vowel sounds. It's the lamest class I have every taken. Too bad it's a requirement! Go to class regularly and try to stay awake...

Oh man. She is the LAMEST teacher. She's not compelling. I will never be interested in Linguistics because of her. She is lazy and unhelpful. Her accent's not the issue, it's what she doesn't say; she's horrible at preparing students for exams. BEWARE: there is a lot of busy work and boring lectures. Try to make her your last resort.

The homework is very easy to do and Prof Waltz doesn't give out much. Homework is once a week and it helps a lot towards your grade. Study guides help and attend class regularly.

Don't be persuaded by these con's, enjoyment of the class has alot to do with one's personal interest in the subject matter. As far as this professor's teaching, she is so clear and understandable! Dr. Waltz is a fabulous teacher and her passion for linguistics is evident in her lectures. Her door is always open to offer help to those who ask for it. If you show up to class and take the effort to actually participate, you should pass. She presents the subject matter in a fun way and gives lots of opportunities for class participation.

Very nice lady and very humorous. She is thorough and wants to make sure you get it. She is very knowledgeable in her field and is available for questions during office hours. There were only about 8 homework assignments and the tests are easy if you have understood the material. Just pay attention!

Heidi is an asset to UCR. She should be a professor of something, and not just a senior lecturer. Her class was very informative and eye-opening. She repeats things until you get them. The tests are mainly multiple choice and can be a little tricky, but if you have studied, you can get a near-perfect score. She makes linguistics interesting.

She certainly made it clear she did not want to be there either. She was late to almost every lecture I attended. keep away from her

I just finished taking a final with this professor and felt moved to comment-in many ways this quarter (Fall 2008) she has proven to be a poor teacher and unprofessional. She yelled at a student who asked a question because she misunderstood it, and interrupted the entire lecture hall over it while we were trying to concentrate on the final.

As for the unprofessional comment: I think YOU are mistaken when you think she was being unprofessional when she had embarrassed that student in front of the whole class. How do you come to the final and not know what PP stands for?!

Great professor, very friendly. If you're not into linguistics, don't take this class because...like the course name says... that's what it's about. Requires moderate studying. I spent about 4 hours a week reading the book and another hour or two with notes. Not an easy A, but if you study and show up you should have no problem getting one.

Like many said, don't take the class "just for fun." I LOVE Professor Waltz! She makes a relatively dull subject seem very interesting. She has such a snarky sense of humor and she teaches extremely well. Her explanations are clear, she is ALWAYS available for help, and will repeat something if she knows her students don't understand it.

Dr. Waltz is incredibly sweet. The class is easy and if you attend lecture you will do wonderful on the midterm and final. She is funny and although she has a slight accent she is 100% understandable. I recommend this class!

Professor Waltz is extremely enthusiastic about Linguistics, and it's hard not to be interested in this course with her apparant love of the subject. The class is pretty easy as long as you go to class and take notes during lecture. Waltz can be a little temporamental, but as long as you don't ask stupid questions in class you'll be fine.

She has a definite love for linguistics! She always made herself availible whenever possible and she answers any questions, big or small! She has a bit of an accent but she can make very abstract concepts crystal clear! I never really had to read much because she always went over the core stuff. It was quite an enjoyable class!

Attempting to fulfill my interest of linguistic while completing my requirements, I am sorely disappointed in the end. Her class is super boring with some humor here and there. The information from class is redundant as you can self-teach yourself from the book. Only half of the required readings for the final was placed on the exam. UNORGANIZED

If you want to learn about the origin and history of language, this is the class for you. This class is easy as long as you do the readings, go to class, and do the homework. Make sure to ask questions if you are confused. You may find this class difficult if you don't attend class. She gives answers IN CLASS for homework and tests.

i can honestly say , that if you didn't pass this class it's your fault. if you study you will pass. she's helpful when you talk to her. she tells you to read the chapter more than once. do what she says and you'll do fine.

Class was hard at first but then it clicks once you get the swing of it. Class should be no problem to pass. Tests were fair. Attend all the lectures, she is a good professor. I don't recommend this class if your grammar is poor.

Prior to attending this class, I was warned by many people not to take this class...I should have followed their advice. Linguistics could have been a great opportunity to learn, but in the end it all became pure boredom to the core. I am usually one who does not fall asleep in class, and well, I've now perfected napping thanks to her.

I don't even where to start. She is by far the worst professor I've had at UCR. She was late to every lecture. She is impossible to understand. Her class is incredibly unorganized. Lectures were pointless because you can't even hear her. You'll want to scream & pull your hair out. The book doesn't help at all.

If you find yourself not sleeping at night, come to her class it will knock you out completely. Her "notes" is just what you hear come out of her mouth. MC is just A-B-C. I had class at UNLH, and imagine 550 students getting up at once to turn in homework/pick up homework. UNORGANIZED. Easy to pass with S/NC as an elective...have fun...sleeping.

Don't listen to the other guys. This class is fun and easy. You have homework every week, but it is always less than five questions. And it is very easy. Just go to class, do your reading, and take very good notes and you will do great. The stuff she goes over in class is what is on the test. Office hours are also helpful as are the TA's.

This class is much more than just pronouns adjectives etc its not that bad. She is super helpful,as long as you do all your homeowork you can pass. All you have is homework assignments here & there, 1 midterm, 1 final. She does not ask much of you. I failed the midterm did all my homework and asked her for help for the final and got a B.

I have no idea why everyone is rating so badly, the professor is a super sweet lady. How interesting the class is just depends on what your interests are. If you don't like grammar or languages, stay away. Professor Waltz herself is really nice though. She has an accent, but it's easy to understand her. I liked her and the class a lot :)

Trees were a pain, but she really tries hard to help you understand in lecture. Provides study guides for midterm and final that are really helpful and similar to tests. Homework assignments are given credit no matter what as long as you do them and looks like you tried. Got an A and didn't have to try that hard.

I wasn't that engaged in learning about linguistics. Overall the class was interesting, but this class just seemed difficult. The exams were difficult. The multiple choice seemed tricky and there seemed like so much information to remember. I think the teacher was enthusiastic, but it didn't help in making me more interested in the class.

She is a silly funny teacher.Well I thought her class was pretty easy.The class only consists of homework once a week,and midterm and final.The exams, to me,were not hard at all because she actually tells you and gives you what to study for the test.It's all grammar and English. Lecture can be a bit boring but easy. HER CLASS IS SO EASY!

I took Ling 20 and overall it is a good class. You must study though before tests. Her class consists of a midterm and exam and homework due weekly. Make sure to take you homework to a T.A. so they can check it. I probably could've gotten a higher grade had I studied more. However, be aware that lecture can get BORING! Overall, it is a good class.

I took her Grammar class and really the most important thing to learn is the verb types. Make sure to understand those. The class overall was challenging, but simple. Attendance is not mandatory, but is greatly recommended. Use of the book is required (and pretty useful). Class consists of 1 midterm, 1 final, and around 8 homeworks. Pay attention!

I only took her class because it was a requirement. She has a weird accent or could be a slur problem. Subject can redundant which made me prone to sleep. Her class only consist of 8 homeworks, 1 midterm and a final. She values more the homework than the midterm so make sure you do ALL of the homework for cushion points

I loved this class. The professor is fun and really helpful during office hours. After taking this class I even decided to major in linguistics. It's a really interesting class, but if you're not a language person, you probably won't like it.

Difficult professor but sticks to the point with her information. As long as you read the book and know the terms from the book you will get a good grade. Very helpful and kind if you go to her office hours. Highly recommend going (even for Ling 20 also)

First thing she said in the first lecture, "Are you sure you want to take this class? You are very brave if you do." Super scared at first but she is very clear in her lectures and helpful during office hrs. Very approachable. Read the book before class and before midterm/final and you will be fine. Homework every week. Definitely TAKE this class!

I am not sure why so many students had a hard time in this class. She's not a bad teacher and the subject is really simple. I did not use the book once and just attended every lecture (I did same thing for Ling20). I passed both classes with an A, if you're stuck go to her office hours and she'll help you thoroughly.

She's easy to understand and the homework really helps. I love her accent, it's so cool. I miss like 6 classes and read about 15 pages in total but still have got an A- in the class. Just do the homework and figure out what you got wrong, get the right answers. Study from the correct homework and you're set.

Very boring class and the material is not clear at all. She does not take the effort to make this boring material interesting. She doesn't want to help in office hours unless you really show her that you understand the material. Gives good study guides, homework are due every week. 1 midterm and 1 final. read the book and take very carful notes.

The class in general was super tough, but she did a great job teaching it. She teaches directly from the book, if you don't have it, you will not pass. Homework is straight forward, tests are somewhat tough, I would create a study group with other students. You need to study for this class to pass, it's definetly the hardest subject I've taken.

Dr. Waltz is a good professor. It's a very easy class if you pay attention to what she says and do the readings. She expects that you've read the chapter before lecture (it says so in the syllabus) and the lectures are basically watered down summaries of the chapter. Tests are exclusively on the lectures. Homework is a breeze.

Professor Waltz is a very nice professor. The class wasn't even hard. Just do the readings, show up to class, take notes, do your hw and you will definitely pass with an A. Her lectures sometimes doesnt make sense but if you ask her to clarify in class, she WILL clarify it. Her lectures are really just summaries of the readings.

Dr. Waltz is a pretty good professor. good memorization skills will help. read the book. HW assigned is easy and good cushion points since she gives you full credit regardless if ur answers are wrong. 1 midterm and 1 final. some of the material was interesting, most was boring tho. she is very helpful and sweet. funny in her own way

She's so sweet and nice! Really tries to engage with the class and does in class practices to help students understand the materials. Yes, you do need the textbook to do the hw but tbh you can just get the problems from your friend. I never read the book unless I got stuck in some problems. Tests are all based on her lectures. Overall, easy A.

She's FAVORITE person at this University; her lectures are coherent and she is extremely knowledgeable of the field. Mind you, she held this department by herself for many years. I have taken her for most of my years here and I must say I'm glad whenever I take her!!!!!

Everything you need to pass the midterm and final is in the lecture. If you attend the lecture and do readings you'll pass the class no doubt. The midterm and the final is all based off of your homework, lectures, and readings. Attendance is not mandatory, but if you miss the first 15min of class, you'll most definitely be lost in your homework. So if you ditch lecture, you'll fail. Overall easy class if you do your stuff.

Awesome professor!! Straight forward class--the bulk of the knowledge is learned in the first few chapters--get to know the material and how to properly identity the functional bits of a sentence and its 'chicken pieces'. Don't make stupid mistakes and if you are on-time on Friday, when homework is submitted, you are actually five minutes late.

Honestly I couldn't understand what the teacher was saying half of the time. The class wasn't that hard but I had to self teach it to myself. I would not recommend this class, but if you like falling asleep in a class you can't understand then by all means take It.

You need to go to her lectures even though there's no participation points. Study a ton! There's only hw, a midterm, and a final. You can't fail the midterm or final. Little things graded. There is no passion in her teaching. She simply reads from the textbook during lecture and explains concepts when needed. I still find it hard to understand because she doesn't elaborate and is very disjointed with her explanations. I had to look up videos on YouTube in order to learn the material. We need a professor to be clear and concise.

If brave enough to admit you need more explanation she will slow down & explain again. The main problem: not enough TAs; only 3 for a full class need double. Why? Even if minimal effort is put in, you should be able to pass with a C. There are only 7 homework assignments and they take less tan 30 mins to complete. Everything on the study guides is what will be on the midterms and exam. During lecture, she works through examples and thoroughly teaches material. Just make sure you do the assigned readings.

You have to attend lectures! Reading before the lectures help a lot (pdf of the book will do just fine). Memorization is the best way to get through the IPA section of the quarter. Gives out about 5 homework assignments through the quarter. One midterm and one final. No essays. No laptops are allowed (but I used mine during discussions bc of book)

She seems really kind, and is amazing and passionate about what she does. I feel like the discussion would be very helpful, but I didn't have a great TA. The first half of the course is the hardest, so don't drop after the midterm! First half is memorization, second half is more conceptual and interesting, but you actually need to study a bit.

Attending lecture/discussion is crucial to fully grasping the material. The exams cover nearly everything, so you actually have to study to get a good grade. TOO MUCH WORK FOR A BREADTH REQUIREMENT! Lectures are bad enough, but this professor makes them unbearable. To be completely honest, an A in this class was attainable but you just have to be 100% paying attention in class and keeping up on the reading. On the first midterm, I received a 71% but I still managed to get an A- in the class from the final, homework, and discussion sections. I wouldn't recommend this class for people that don't like grammar, but if you do, it's awesome. Prof Waltz is a very clear and enthusiastic lecturer. I learn more from her and I just use the textbook for reference. There's just a midterm, final, and 4 HW assignments in between that can be done in 30 minutes. You'll learn so much from Prof Waltz.

Make sure to buy the book, it's needed for the homework and discussion section. You don't really need to attend class if you're willing to teach yourself through the book. Waltz is a terrible, lazy, and very rude instructor. She only offers 30 mins for office hours a week. If you have questions, she won't answer them but refer you back to the textbook over and over again. Be prepared for self-teaching. DONT take her class if you don't have to. Stay away from her.

Very hard class. Confusing for many of my peers and myself. TA was a strict grader. She took points off for the most simplest things. She made it mandatory to turn camera on during zoom. There's no lecture attendance but you must go. The textbook is handy, but you will be fine just using the library copy. Fill out her guided worksheets. 20% grade is discussion attendance and easy homework. Prof answers questions pretty well if you ask them clearly. With a few flashcards, you will be fine.
