the most brilliant teacher i've ever had
Realy nice lady, VERY smart, however she is a new teacher and loads you with tons of work. This class had 5 theory papers and the final is an in class cumulative essay that will if done the way she asks be about ten pages. She is an awesome teacher but she is hard and not to be taken by the lazy student.
if i could have taken all my courses with her i would have, she's the greatest prof i've ever had, and i've had quite a share

Hard work really does pay off in this class. Show up, ask good questions, and prepare to study your ass off for the exams. Despite getting a B- on the first two, I managed an A- in the class for the assignments and a wonderful final exam. She's not easy, but she's fair. She cares about your progress and understanding, but she doesn't bu11$h1t either.
There is a lot of reading with Heike, and it is not the easiest stuff. You often need to attend class simply to figure out what in the He!l you just read. Still, she is brilliant and absolutely gorgeous and it is worth studying with her. Do not expect the Gentleman/Womans B with her. You need to put the work in.
It's a lower-level class yet she treats it like its a graduate course. Tries to force her communist/feminist ideals on students indirectly. Quoting Marx as "good stuff" is insane. Paper topics are unclear. Only can get a good grade if you kiss her butt. Ask a question, get a drawn out answer. Too bad Theory's a requirement... AVOID AT ALL COSTS!!!
she's not someone i would prefer.
Honestly, hadn't made up my mind about what to go to grad school for until I took this class. Makes political theory more interesting than any science or humanity. Definietly one of the top 5 classes ever taken in my life. Great Professor!!!
her classes were amazing & easy to follow, but it was alot of work. you learn tons, but it isn't BS. She totally effected my studies, and was extremely encouraging. Better than any of my previous undergrad profs, & my current grad school profs. dont think any prof has ever motivated me and captivated me in class just by mere discussions as she had
Heike is incredibly engaging, speaking at 3000 words per minute with great command of the material. She is also beautiful, edgy, and approachable, which equals hotness. Great hair, great attitude, great mind. Her excitement over the material is contagious. And she's very, very funny.
She's tough but great!
A bit biased & oppionated for my taste. Very tough grader, tough papers, challenging texts and heavy amount of reading. Be prepared to take many, many notes during lectures, attendance is mandatory. I couldn't stand all the touchy feely psycho babble &intellectual elitist attitude, plus she wasted time everyday making the class arrang in a circle.
good prof. had her t 8:30 am kept me awake
the woman is a genius, but her class is probably one of the hardest in the whole university
I did the same thing the other poster did when I was writing papers, thought about what she wanted to hear not what I actually thought. She says she wants students' opinions but I really don't think that she does.
Horrible, horrible, horrible, horrible, horrible!
I found her class to be really interesting and fun. There were four papers in total and I enjoyed writing all of them. It is important to read (not just skim) the text given and attend every class in order to understand the material. I missed one class and i was totally lost on Aristotle's view of slavery.
Those who spoke poorly of Prof. Schotten are clearly upset about their grades, as she is an extremely tough grader. She simply expects the best of her students. She wants analytical papers- not opinion papers. She wants you to understand the argument and think about it critically. If your goal in school is to actually learn, take her class.
she's incredibly tough which is great if that's what you want in a professor but there is no flexibility to it. it's ok to tough in order to make a point but there has to be a few exceptions made. not everyone can meet her exceptionally high and sometimes unrealistic standards.
After going into philosophy grad school, I realized that she is not interested in teaching, or helping students learn in general. She wants to impress you and make you feel dumb, and in the end there just isn't much substance there. I'd avoid her, even if you love political theory. And if you don't, then don't even bother thinking about it.
Im not a slacker. I want to learn, I read all assignments &attend all classes. None of that mattered. She's very arrogant, has extremely high standards that are impossible, and doesn't offer much help when asked for clarity. Does have students' best interest at heart. Very big ego, please AVOID! seriously DO NOT TAKE A CLASS WITH HER!!
Great professor, she makes you do the reading assignments. Her quizzes are simple but they help you learn a lot. The best thing about her way of teaching is if you fell that you should have gotten a question right she allows you to email her and make a case for it. She does give points back if you can make a case.
I'm in my second year of graduate studies in philosophy and her classes prepared me well. Her courses cover texts central to understanding political theory/philosophy, and she makes even the driest material exciting and accessible. Also, her office hours are an invaluable resource for anyone looking to get serious about theory. Not for the weak!
Heike is a great professor. I'm studying philosophy in grad school now and she really prepared me for my political philosophy courses. She really cares about helping her students learn. Her lectures are really clear and her grading is fair. It takes an effort to do well in her courses, but it's well worth it.
That girl thinks she's the queen of the neighborhood. Well I've got news for you: she is!
A very interesting and easy class. 2 texts for class The Republic by Plato and The Prince by Machiavelli. Short multiple choice, true/false, and fill in the blank quizzes with almost every class. Midterm and final are more elaborate. You will discuss both texts in detail in class. Heike is an excellent professor with a real interest in her field.
Marx's Marxism was a interesting class on the political theory of the father of communism. It's challenging because there's a lot of writing involved from week to week and lot of reading to do for class discussions. Overall, she's helpful and has a good sense of humor. Her grades are fair, if you put in the work. Be ready to work hard in her class.
I don't understand all the good ratings Heike is getting. I am a very good student and understood the material she presented with no difficulty but she somehow didnt like how I approached it in writing. She is impossible to please even if you swallow your pride and regurgitate what she presents in class. She is definitely arrogant and no help at al
Terrible professor. I wouldn't call it teaching, more like ranting. Thinks she's got philosophy figured out when philosophy, like most texts, are open to interpretation. My least favorite class at UMB.
I believe Heike is one of the most brilliant professors throughout the whole UMass Boston. She's demanding, but does it for you own benefit especially if you're planning on attending graduate school. She's also very beautiful, bright, smart, has a sensual voice, polite character and manners, classy, professional, great sense of humor. Def. take her
She understands the material but is not a good professor. Grades unreasonably for the level of classes she teaches and sets up the reading assignments in ways that make her papers almost impossible to write to her standard. She is more concerned with her 'beliefs' than teaching the material, doesnt teach without swearing every class for cool points
She treats intro courses like they're PhD classes, and she gives fill in the blank quizzes which are frowned upon as a form of testing. She's very arrogant, seemed like she wrote quizzes just before class and they were filled with errors. She was always late to class. Worst of all, the study guide for the final was disorganized. Avoid!
The Good: communication skills are solid and she has a true passion for the subjects she teaches. The bad: often over-bearing, often ambiguous with direct questioning, does not pre-explain how high her standards are in a University that often accept mediocrity. Clarity from the beginning would really stop many students from becoming so enraged.
take this class if you want to be doomed.
Heike is extremely intelligent and beautiful and her class will really make you think. Her passion for teaching and learning is infectious. She assigns way too much work even for very dedicated students, has incredibly high standards, and can be moody. You decide.
Most entertaining class at UMB. Definitely had some really good laughs. One of the best professors at UMB by far. The class was led by the students which was incredible given that the majority of the students came highly prepared. However, it is a very analytical class and personal opinions in class (as well as on papers) were not encouraged.
On the surface she seems like a cool and fun teacher, but in all honesty she looks down on anyone who doesn't have a background in her areas of study, is quite arrogant, has a very discouraging style of teaching in which she will flat out tell you you are wrong. She seems incredibly moody as well, hope you catch her on a good day.
She is nice and all, and seems cool, but she is very particular about what she wants and this isnt a good thing. She gives pop quizes that are worth 48% of your grade, so for those thinking they can skip this class, no way. She is smart and all but if you dont love the material as much as she does, she tends to ingore you.QED:Nice but dont take her
Much more demanding than typical Umass professor, but still reasonable. Very engaged, knowledgeable, and funny. Keep up with readings. Its easy to get behind for the cumulative final.
Absolutely the most difficult, unreasonable, condescending, degrading professor I've ever seen. She seems cool on the surface but it's only a façade. She will blatantly tell you are wrong without giving any explanation as to why. She grades in a manner to reaffirm how smart she is, rather than to help you. Take her only if you want to be DOOMED.
This professor thinks the PolSci program is her's to dictate. Unless you want to blindly follow her into the Marxist, anti-traditional value, anti-Semitic, anti-man, anti-everything about what made Rocky movies awesome, revolution that she WON'T admit to endorsing, avoid like the plague. Condescending, aloof, esoteric. Sharp dresser though!
Prof. Schotten is a foe intellectual. She presents radical theories as facts, when they rarely include any facts whatsoever. She refuses to answer to any empirical testing or standards. "The sun rises cause the rooster crows" type deal. In order to get a good grade, you have to turn your brain off and not ask questions.
This so-called "Professor" bled any remaining faith in the department as a facility of learning and unbiased dialogue. Decides that she hates you early on and you're done. Allows her favorite little lambs to skip class for the "Occupy Boston" protests. I read one of their midterms (on which I got an unsurprising F) and it was drivel. Don't do it!!
Did not like her teaching style, claimed there was no right or wrong answer for her class discussions. but she expected everyone to know the "right" answer for midterm and final. She had favorites in her class and let them skip class. Unfair professor and unfair grader. Avoid at all costs, unless you want GPA to be affected.
The most difficult professor I've had at UMB, but also the best. You certainly can't BS your way through her class, so don't even try. She really wants you to learn the subject for yourself, not just for the grade. Cons: slightly rigid, not always clear about her expectations. But overall, she is knowledgable, engaging, inspiring, helpful, great!
Oh, Heike. Not for the faint of heart!! A 200 level class, with expectations of gradual level work. She has helped my writing tremendously, however my GPA will suffer. She is an amazing personteachermentor who will push you to the limits but for your own good. Do the work, put in the effort, and you will be rewarded. Lazyuninterested be warned!!
I want to be as fair as possible with this prof. Expects a lot from students so if you have a full load, avoid at all costs. You will read a lot & will probably never understand it the way she wanted you to. TOUGH GRADER! Her 200 level classes will be expected to do post-grad work. you can tell her daddy issues reflect back on students.
She's a tough grader. Her classes are boring and there are quizzes everyday, that is the way she takes attendance. DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS!!
first off it's poli theory, which is already a hated class but she is intelligent and knows what she is talking about. avoid this class. it is hard, annoying, and really time consuming at the 100 level.
Her class overall was fair. Theres certain things she could have done differently in the class, for example I feel participation should've counted towards our grades. Didn't like her grading criteria much, we had quizzes everyday which was a big part of our final grade.
This Professor, does not even follow Ross Center special accommodations. You cant miss any classes and all of the work for the class is done through testing. You will not learn anything from her directly. You will read and take test, and listen to her go on about nothing.
This class is not really that difficult, you just need to make sure that you do the readings and take notes. She gives small quizzes almost every day, but honestly, you will get a 10/10 every time as long as you take good notes on the readings. She lets us use our notes for the quiz and these notes will really help on the midterm/final as well.
Truth: Aims to challenge students intellectually, but fails to do so because she disregards the challenges students face in an academic setting. Opinion: Cares more about her academic achievements (publications) than teaching students. Advice: Take heed to the concerns of her former students! Heike is not supportive academically nor is she caring.
There's two exams and about sixteen open book, pop quizzes (hand written notes only). She's a good professor with lots of personality. However it's unrealistic to expect people to grasp the major concepts and remember every single minor detail of all three books. Exams are hard. Even with notes, you're bound to lose points on quizzes.
One of the hardest professors I ever had. I showed up everyday at 8:00 am for her class and participated and she still gave me a flat out F based on the Quizzes which are all short answer. She will assign you a bunch of reading. I met with her a few times and she acted like she understood my struggle so I was surprised when I got an F.
I respect Prof. Schotten a lot of her ability to engage interesting discussions in each meeting. She responds and appreciate EVERY participation from her students. Somehow, it could be hard if you miss to understand the topic because the pace of the conversation and her explanation is so fast
Simply the best. Teaches with the aim of making students think with such enthusiasm and energy each class is definitely not boring. To ensure we read, there are 15 quizzes,, open notes, which takes a few hours homework.
I have heard nothing but excellent comments about her. She's upbeat and has tons of energy. She allows open note quizzes, so 48% of grade should be an A. She's what every professor should be. Inspirational, smart, engages the class to participate, and to THINK.
BEWARE! BEWARE! BEWARE I wish I saw her rating before taking her class. Get ready to have no opinion because if you do she will shut you down quick. If your response to questions aren't exactly like hers, GOD HELP YOU. Lots of reading with no consideration of student work load. She cares more about hearing herself speak than teaching. DON'T DO IT
She's intense, exciting, brilliant and knows how to teach and engage students. She always seeks questions from students and wants feedback to gauge the students grasp. Do the readings, take good notes and get an A. Tests are fair and never tricky. She provides mid-term and final study guides.
OLD ENGLISH, you think it means one thing and it is something completely different then you fail the quiz the next day because she does not explain what she is looking for. Quiz every day. So much reading for a intro class
I was a former student of Heike's and I wrote about something in a paper with which she completely disagreed. Her opinions are known throughout the course of the semester and I made the mistake of challenging a few of her opinions within my writings. It cost me in what I received as a grade for the course. Highly recommend avoiding her class.
Heike may be one the most influential professors I've ever had. She looks to bring out the best in her students and certainly brought out the best in. She is not for the students looking to get an easy A. You have to work for it! There were times I was frustrated, but I loved the passion and energy she brought every day. I will never forget her.
Tough class, great teacher.
She is very smart. If you don't agree with her views however, you are in trouble. She is not tolerant of anyone who has a different perspective and takes it out on you with her grade. The workload is unreasonable. Stay away from her!
Even if youre a good student her class is tough. Avoid taking if you care about your GPA. Lots of reading and quizzes almost everyday. Quizzes are way too specific. Her lectures are pretty good though.
I Love the Professor as she has a lot to teach, & i would have love to take another class with her but her grading system is ridiculous I don't see how anyone pass her class 15 quiz 48% of grade over the semester and 2 midterm exam 20% and the final 32%> no real direction on how to study. you are intentionally set up to fail in this class. stayaway
Amazing Lecture have a lot to teach her students but no extra credit nor attendance grade you will only pass this class if you are single and don't have a life. if you do expect to be single or fail her class. very inconsiderate that students has other class or a life. If never been bullied by a teacher/Professor be ready to be BULLIED by her
She has a smile and act nice but thats just a font, She is the most obnoxious person I've ever met. she bullies her student and don't care if you pass or fail, Her TA only help her grading papers not any help to students. she is AROGANT, HATEFUL, DISRESPECTFUL, SELF-CENTERED. not saying this lightly just want to make sure u don't make same mistake
A great class the worst grading professor, if you are a straight A student guarantee you will walk away with a C+ if you a C student you have a 50% chance u Fail, I advice take this class with another professor because its a great class for elective. She's just not a good grader48% is 15quiz over the sem thats is 1to2Q a week. 20%midterm 32%finals.
this is the worst professor if you care about your GPA, turn A students into C student all other students will fail in her class, stay away.
Worst professor/human Ive ever come across. she expects you to come to class every day, participation and attendance doesn't count. No consideration for her students. she pull things out of a hat, she doesnt care. Really dont recommend this professor to even my worst enemy. she's very disrespectful to her students she believes everyone is a low
This professor is by far one of the worst one's I have ever had. She is condescending to students, loves to hear herself talk, I strongly recommend taking this course with another professor. Lectures are great, very interesting, and informative. but you will fail if you are not young single and don't have a life. not adult learner friendly st aw
Heike is a passionate scholar, is pure in her politics, and it shows. She has has very high standards, which I was initially afraid of. However, if you are truly interested in cultivating new ways of thinking and taking your writing skills to the next level, she will be an amazing resource for you.
I don't want to say bad about her cause she is passionate about the subject, but she is very difficult to talk to she has no compassion, for anyone who she consider lesser than her.
All the bad comments say what I would love to say. Please take the warnings serious and stay away from her class take it with someone els PLEASE
When I searched and saw all these terrible reviews I was terrified and considered just dropping the course without going to a class. SO happy I stuck with it. Heike is definitely my favorite professor. Passionate and cares about students. Not an easy A but take notes and actually do readings. Not a straight A student so if I can do it so can you.
prof is amazing. You gotta work for a good grade but the class is really interesting. Super caring and kind. Lectures are amazing. Be prepared to do a ton of reading/note taking because theres a pop quiz 1-2x/week. She lets you use notes on them though so take good notes and get A on all of them + she drops the 3 lowest. Def taking her again!LazyF
Bit of a tough class, but if you engage in the reading and take good notes you will do well. If political theory doesn't interest you that much probably not the class for you because it can be difficult to understand, but if you do take it to make sure to talk with her individually because it will help you understand source material a lot better.
Don't know how anyone can pretend this professor is a good person. Yes her class is very engaging, a very good lecturer a very good class, it take away from other classes not intro course work, more like a 400 level work load. Can learn a lot from this course but the professor will make your life miserable, her smile is FAKE, take with another PR
Might be one of the smartest professor at UMB but this woman has no soul, compassion, for anyone she loves to hear herself talk, get ready for her to push her far left views on you, she acts friendly but she's not mor like she practice her fake smile in the mirror, gets a kick out of making peoples life miserable. you have been warned. STAY AWAY
This woman is smart but heartless if she had compassion she would be the best professor She stress her students the entire semester
a ton load of her student drop class or fail,
As long as you are prepared to work and take notes, you should get a good grade! Professor gives amazing lectures as well.
Shes literally the best instructor Ill ever have. lectures are amazing and she truly CARES about students. A lot of work but if you actually do it and put in the effort you can get an A without being a top student. Those who put bad reviews just didnt want to put in the effort. Smoothest transition to online learning. Would Def take her again.
Gets into the nitty-gritty of the political philosophy of the modern era, and brilliantly ties those trends into historical & contemporary political discourse. The professor is also great, she really knows in my opinion how to engage a class and was so accommodating for office hours and in giving me help and advice for my academic career.
I don't know how this professor has so many bad reviews. She is one of the greatest teacher and her class was super fun. I would totally take classes with her again, she has been super understanding and professional as well as being funny at the same time. She is a great teacher and I super recommend her.
Best professor Ive had and probably the best I'll ever have. Shes kind &passionate about what she teaches. Those who say otherwise arent happy with their grades. If you put in sincere &honest effort &follow instructions, the class is amazing. Theres a big workload and it isnt always easy but shes good at explaining in &out of class. 100% recommend!
This professor is impossible stay away not a good human being no compassion love nor understanding
She really great, she's veryyy reasonable, this topics are VERY challenging but she's always tries to make herself available for you.
Too difficult, but that is OK, if you love it
Heike Schotten is an extremely tough grader, her class has lots of quizzes (at least 15 a semester), and there is a TON of intellectually heavy reading. There is a LOT of reading required in her class. She tries to be funny and relatable in class, and she is actually quite a bit successful at that. Approaching her in office hours though :(
If you are a political science major DO NOT take her class same if you are just looking for classes to take. Avoid her any of her classes.
She's a ridiculously tough grader but doesn't give super clear guidelines on what she wants from her "close reading" assignments, so it's hard to do well in the class. Also was really invalidating when I raised concerns about her grading methods to the point that I broke down crying in her office.
lot of quizzes and takes quiz without even teaching(before). don't take her lecture in any condition.
The amount of reading she expected us to do was so much. The class was a mix of undergrad and graduate students. Even the graduate students found her annoying! Not taking her class ever again!
Good professor, will push you to be a better student
Guys run!!! On the first day of class she's all smiley and sweet. It's a trap!! She starts getting strict and assigns wayyy too much readings for a lower level course...
Reading Prof Heike's rmp on the first day of classes had me stressing out but being halfway through the semester, it's really not bad at all. Readings are manageable and the quizzes are short and simple; you're able to better scale your grade with them. Heike's pretty understanding and passionate in her field. Previous reviews are so dramatic.
The worst obstacle to overcome with this class is that there's a lot of reading, and you don't know if you're going to walk into a test, so make sure you 100% have read the material before class. But by far, my favorite part is Prof. Heike is a down-to-earth, real, and funny person, and the lectures are super engaging and entertaining.
Honestly, her class is amazing and the community (classmates) matches it. You have to be excited and ready to learn. You also have to read a lot and participate as much as possible. I didn't finish this course due to personal matters, but I will retake it next semester. She as a person is so kind and understanding.
She's a great lecturer and honestly a decent person who demonstrated more interest in their students in comparison to some other professors on campus (IMO) The course is VERY test+quiz-oriented, with 15 or so semi-pop quizzes, midterm, and final exam(~30% of the total grade!), attendance isn't optional due to the pop quizzes.
The material for the class was boring, and the professor made it even more so. The good thing about the class is that there is extra credit on the quizzes. Was an easy class overall as long as you take notes for the daily quizzes and study in advance for tests.
BEWARE!!!!! She is the most annoying professor I have ever had in my 4 years of college. She gives out quizzes with questions regarding the most irrelevant details to the readings. She also had us do a two part mid term after spring break. She's very condescending and is not someone you can reason with. DONT TAKE HER CLASS!
This professor is one of the hardest I've ever had the misfortune of having. I'll start with saying she is extremely intelligent and I respect that. But she lacks compassion, common sense and an ability to see any students issues outside of her lens of her ability to do things. She doesn't care about her students, only her paycheck and accolades.
don't be scared by her reviews!! out of all my professors ive had, she was 1 of the most caring and personable towards students. like genuinely cared about our lives&ability to learn. yes, there was a quiz almost every class & a fair amount of readings. but, take good notes, stay engaged during class & ask qs. shes very witty, smart,& fair overall.
Don't listen to all these one-star reviews. This professor cares deeply and is extremely passionate about the work she's doing. Best professor I've ever had. She's a tough grader, but she pushes you to actually learn and understand concepts, and she genuinely cares about her students. Her classes are truly unforgettable. HEIKE MY GOAT FR!!!!!!
Heike is a nice person but if you are not interested in philosophy like plato, marx it is a struggle. All you do is you are assigned to read a lot before every class, then in class you take a quiz on the reading and she spends the rest of class lecturing on the reading.Thats how every class goes and your only other grade is the midterm and final.
Heike was kind and understanding and accommodating. didnt love that i had to get 5 books physically (no digital books allowed), and there were a lot of assignments that were graded critically. its understandable for the course load. wouldn't take it again, but Heike is great and the class was very fun aside from some of the incels.
A good professor, & passionate about teaching and helping us understand the material. As much as I understood and changed my writing structure to attempt to get a good grade, nothing helped and I kept getting low grades. I went to tutors and classmates to check my work - never got a B or more on anything. Seek-out help if you want to pass at all.
Professor Heike's class is challenging, but engaging. Lots of quizzes, but manageable if you stay on top of readings. Lectures are worth attending - she's witty and fair. Unstuck study was a lifesaver for prep.
Took intro poli course back in 09, easily one of the worst professors I ever had. Extremely close minded and combative. Sexualized everything. We were reading The Republic and she dedicated an entire class to discussing masturbation and was angry that students weren't interested in the topic. Horrified to learn she is still teaching there
I took a theory class with Professor Schiffer through the GCWS at MIT. She was awesome. Really knows her stuff, very supportive, cracks a lot of jokes and encourages learning even when the material is very theoretical and potentially challenging to grasp. I'm very grateful I had this opportunity to take a class with her.
