If you dp not have a strong backround in chemistry you will have a difficult time.
HE is extremely difficult. Only take if you are good in chemistry.
He is one of the best teachers at tulane. Definitely take him if you are a premed, you will have such a strong background in chem that you will preform well on the mcat. again great teacher!
The guy is really friendly, but if you haven't taken chemistry before you might find it very difficult. He goes much faster than the other chem profs. If you want an easy A, I wouldn't recommend him. If you want to know your stuff though, then go ahead.
you may think his tests are hard but there is a really good curve on all of them. best part of this class is that you don't have to go. He posts everything online.
He is an excellent teacher, but his tests and quizes aren't easy. He curves well, though.
He's an okay teacher. He is very nice and will help you outside of class. However, he doesn't explain things well and can be boring. His tests are very, very hard, and there is nothing in the book like them. Truly, don't be swayed by the people on this board that say he's fantastic. He's okay.
he is a very nice guy and is always willing to help and answer questions through email or during office hours. His grading is very fair; however his tests are very difficult.
Okay teacher
If you do not have a decent background in chem, do not take this course with him. However, if you do have a background in chem, this class if fairly easy because he puts everything online, so you do not have to actually attend class. There is a really big curve on the exams as well.
i have a really strong background in chem, so the class wasnt bad for me. but i know a lot of kids who have struggles thru his class. be prepared to sleep through lectures. the tests are hard, but curved. i wouldnt really recommend him.
Everything is online so lectures aren't a requirement. If you don't have a chem background, it's difficult because he goes so quickly. Great curves on the tests though. He has good hair too!
The tests aren't hard. Just do some problems the night before and you will make an A. Trust me the curve is awsome. Take him if you get the chance. Great class for doing other stuff or sleeping.
This guy is from Holland and is accustomed to teaching like in Europe, i.e., too many details for simple subjects. He provides good subjects and displays if you are interested in detailed chemistry. If you have not had chemistry before, you are screwed.
horrible horrible teacher. never take a class from this man. it is impossible to get greater than a C on anything, and over half the class is failing.
Hard as hell...he sucks never take a class with him! He has hard tests, and he teaches horribly.
if you listen to anything on this site DO NOT TAKE CLASS FROM THIS PROFESSOR. he is too advanced in his teaching methods for a 100 level class- he is incoherent- and his tests are absolutely impossible. curves help but not GOOD when the whole class gets failing grades DO NOT TAKE TAKE HIS CLASS EVER
Jacobsen is not an easy chem teacher by any means. His tests are ridiculous and no one actually finishes his quizes. He does let you drop your lowest grade of the semester however, which can include either a test or all of your quizes. If you did pretty well in chem in high school its not too bad
Hard as hell. Dont even bother going to lectures, you wont learn anything that you could teach yourself by reading the notes on blacboard. Puts the whole class to sleep with his boring, unemotional voice. Imposible tests and quizes
don't listen to any of these people. General Chemistry will obviously be a hard class. If you put in the effort you will pull of an A in the class. The curves were great and he's a great teacher. Just be prepared to work through alot of chemistry problems.
okay chem class
Very tough teacher, but very helpful. Gives all lecture notes on-line. Also you can pop into his office at anytime and that is very helpful. Do homework, study, go and ask questions during office hours and he is an easy C and tough A.
tip: go to private tutorials because those really help. otherwise class is slightly boring, but its chemistry. he's really passionate about students and learning. generous grader and curver, review your tests with him and he'll likely give you a couple more points
BEST HAIR ON CAMPUS. So adorable when he does the flip. Other than that, not worth going. The lecture notes are online. He doesn't test on what he covers. Suggested problems have nothing to do with what he asks; you just hope everyone else is as clueless as you so the curve will save you all.
His test dont cover the topics covered in class, but they are classic chem problems, and you must understand them to understand chem. People in his class perform so freaking poorly. The 46 average of the last 90 point test doesn't indicate the difficulty of the test, only the apathy of the students.
Well,he's not that really bad if you really take a little effort into studying chemistry.Chemistry I can never be easy...Those people who complain about him are either idiots or people who never study. He does give difficult tests but he curves them very well.Good class, good professor.
Professor Jacobsen is a good professor. Chemistry is pretty complicated, but he curves like crazy and you can always go talk to him. His exams and quizzes are long, but not always difficult. He has practice sessions too.
Professor Jacobsen is one of the nicest, most helpful professors I've had. The fact that he puts all his lectures on blackboard was very helpful. His delightful quirkiness also made class somewhat entertaining.
READ THIS...before you even think of entering a class taught by Jacobsen think again...this guy is one of the worst teachers i've ever had. he can barely speak english which makes his inability to explain ANYTHING, much less chemistry, non existent. he sits in his office ALL day and makes up insanel
Lectures on blackboard, comprehensive and understandable if you can read, ya know, english. Tests are hard and long, but the curve is good. His explanations of topics are incredibly enlightening.
I've had Prof. Jacobsen for both 107 and 108 and must say that he is probably the best freshman chem professor available. While the course is tough, he provides a reasonable curve to help pass his class. He is very helpful and friendly and tries to teach his class. He is competent and tests well.
Jacobson is terrible! His teaching style is very theoretical which makes it difficult because there is so much math in the course. Also, he gets very defensive and upset when anyone asks him a question. He simply reads class notes off of power point and won't help with any of the math problems.
Teaching methods are acceptable at BEST. His tests always have HUGE curves and he drops 1 of 4 tests (no quizzes). If you can READ (the book & his blackboard notes)... you'll do well. If you still belong in 3rd grade... well, what can you do?
This guy is the WORST.Tests are designed so the avg grade is a 50 then scales. This makes it so dorks/geniuses who answer problems that can be found neither in the book nor from him do best, screwing over the hard workers. If you get A's by being a genius take this.if you get A's by working hard BEWARE. ps im an engineer.the math was NOT the problem.
good professor, better than the other chem professors at Tulane. the final was a ****, screwed me by a letter grade
awful.
Jacobsen is a really good teacher. His lectures are extremely clear and reflect what's in the textbook, as well as what'll be on the tests. He answers questions in class and encourages office hrs. He wants feedback to see if the class understands the content. He even personally checks up on every lab section. He does as much as a teacher can do.
I feel that if I had a better Chemistry background when I came into his class, I would've done much better. But seeing as I pretty much went into it blind, I got lost quickly. Prepare to work like a dog for a good grade if you are in a situation like mine. Also, don't be afraid to talk to him about grades and such. He's a nice guy, really.
approachable, enthusiastic, and he is blackboard oriented with all his ppts and notes online. However, you learn fast that going to class is not mandatory because he just reads from the slides. You essentially have to teach yourself but the textbook doesn't help much. Tests are completely random. Overall, he seems the best 107 prof at tulane.
Kinda hard to understand, but he's SOOO CUTE! Go to class just to watch him! He's adorable.
Heiko is awesome. He makes it very clear that he wants students to succeed. If you talk to him during office hours (or during spinning sessions at Reily ;) he will definitely try to help you do well. Do all the suggested problems and you will be golden on the exams. His tests are fair and the curves are fantastic.

Professor Jacobsen seems interested in chemistry but teaches from power point. The book is very important, so read everything he tells you to. Tests and quizzes mainly come from the list of possible problems he hands out.
Mr. Heiko Jacobsen is a really great teacher. I did find his class to be extremely hard but thats probably because I never really got a good foundation for chemistry in high school. If your the time of student that wants to take chemistry to actually learn what its all about then I definitely recommend his class.
6 quizzes (questions are picked ahead of time = easy 100, 1 dropped also. total of the remaining 5 counts as 1 test) 3 relatively easy tests with 1 dropped. Final counts has weight of two tests. Attn not mandatory but he's got a cool accent. I'd go if I wasn't busy with other things. Sem 2 is harder, and there may be an easier prof but i doubt it
Worlds better than my professor last semester. Don't expect to learn much in lecture, but go anyway because he is entertaining. Quiz problems are chosen from a set available ahead of time, and tests are not much harder.
THIS DUDE IS THE MAN!had him for genchem 1 & 2, and have no regrets. yes his tests are hard and wat not, but chemistry itself is hard so alot of it is actually wat u put into it. Best thing about this guy isthat he's approachable and very understanding and also doesnt just grade base on points, but the student overall, best chem prof at tulane!
Dr. Jacobsen is very amusing. He is a fairly straightforward professor, although the subject matter isn't that interesting. He is easy to understand, and he really can be funny during lecture. If you want a class you can skip, this is it, but he's amusing enough to make you want to go to class at least part of the time.
He's great! He gives out the quiz problems and the test problems come from the Self-Assessment exercises. It's chemistry, so you can't expect to slide by and get an A. It does require some effort.
He's a great professor. The class is hard but so is every other chemistry class at Tulane. He's very helpful if you go to his office and ask for help. The quizzes are extremely easy, but the tests are extremely hard... I would definitly recommend taking this class though.
He is average. Class is boring and not very helpful. You basically have to teach yourself. Also, he seems nice in class but it is rumored that in a personal one on one setting he is mean.
Chemistry is hard to begin with, and this class doesnt make it better. boring lecture. never go. hard tests
Easy teacher. Do the work he assigns, study it and you'll do just fine in class!
Heiko is an excellent teacher. VERY FAIR - grading is flexible drops a test or homework cumulative. Grades class with z-scores which is what all professors should be required to do. VERY HELPFUL - He is very entertaining, nice and in his office often. VERY SMART - He knows this stuff. A pro in inorganic is what you want for intro. A+ for Heiko
BEST CHEM 107 TEACHER! Very funny, interesting, and cares about students. He wants everyone to get good grades. Drop 1 quiz and 1 test and everything's curved heavily. Easy to find and helpful. Holds review sessions before tests and answers questions during class. Handles teaching a large lecture very well. No regrets. Take his class if you can!
You must do the problems all on your own because his lectures are about the concepts and the tests are on the application of the equations and concepts. Tests are hard, but the curve is fair. He's good at giving the class the idea, but I would have liked for him to do a couple of examples for us.
Quizzes extremely easy. Posts 10-12 quiz candidates and chooses 2-3 on quizzes. Tests may be hard for students without prior knowledge of chemistry, but easy A for those who took it in high school. Decent curve (z-score). Lectures are not calculation-based but quizzes and tests are so lectures are useless. Tolerates cheating.
Quizzes are easy- straight from the homework. Tests are hard and cumulative. Curves are okay. Teaches well but doesn't necessarily teach for the test. Some students got a hold of old tests which was technically cheating and ruined some of the curves. Read the book. Work the problems. Study hard. You should do fine. He looks like Mad-eye Moody
Had him for lab, never saw him. He wrote his own lab manual...good luck.
Do not take chemistry with Heiko. His lectures are useless, and if you skip one class you'll never go back. Granted chemistry is a hard class to teach, but he just cannot do it. As far as tests goes, he drops one test and one quiz which is needed since all of the average grades are 60s. Seriously though- my least favorite class at Tulane
Heiko means well, he gives an awesome Z-curve, but unless you took AP CHEM in high school, you're going to struggle since he doesn't teach you, he basically gives you the powerpoint (posts them online for you) and says, "So yah...that." Quizzes, you can just memorize the questions he gives beforehand, but tests are impossible.
He's a good guy but unfortunately only teaches the concepts rather than how to work out the problems. His tests are all problems very similar to ones in the book. His quizzes are easy - he tells you which questions will be on there and picks a few from the list. My recommendation would be to go to him during office hours if you have any questions.
I had Heiko for Chem 1 & 2 (Fall and Spring Semester). The lectures quizzes and test are all just okay.. The real problem is the Chem Lab. What a joke! If you have one problem wrong with your calculations, they take off 35 points (out of 70). The grading is seriously flawed and the people in charge enjoy that. And the class is necessary! Good luck!
The lab is meaningless. The students he put in charge of the lab act like it's a dictatorship. It wasn't hard or anything, just stupid. The more effort you put into the reports, the better the grade. As long as you organize it well, and everything is complete, you should get a good grade. You don't even have to do the calculations right! LOL
Lectures are alright. Tests are do-able. Just make sure you know how to do the problems and stay above the curve. The lab is fine as long as you put in the effort. The grad students in charge took off points almost arbitrarily this semester so that they can curve people up instead of down, which as happened previously.
Took AP Chem in high school and got a 5 on the test, but had a difficult time in Jacobsen's class. I came into Tulane loving chem and the department completely destroyed all of my passion for the subject.
He's pretty easy if you took chemistry in highschool but if not, then its going to be hard. Quizzes are super easy and come directly from quiz candidates and you have to teach yourself with the textbook for the tests. The problems he assigns are a basic layout for the test problems but MUCH harder. He curves pretty well so expect to fail every test
Save yourself and do not take a class with this man. He states he wouldn't go to his own lectures unless seeing what the professor emphasizes (which in this case is nothing). Buy the solutions manual because you will end up needing it to pass the quizzes/class, because you won't be learning any chem from him. Please, take a different professor.
Do not take this guy's class. The lectures are horribly boring. The quizzes are fine because he gives you possible problems but the tests are very difficult. And as a person, he is incredibly inconsiderate. I had a problem with my final exam grade and went to talk to him and all he did was yell at me and tell me that I didn't read the lecture notes
Avoid this guy! The only decent thing about his class is that he gives you possible problems to be on quizzes. But the tests are impossible, the lectures are boring and don't make much sense, he is very inconsiderate, he doesn't understand anyone, he gets upset when people ask questions, and he generally doesn't seem to care. It's a huge headache!
I was a huge fan of Chemistry before I took Heiko's class. His class made me hate it. He doesn't teach material, he just reads off powerpoints which he doesn't even do clearly. The tests are very difficult and you can't ask him a simple question without him getting upset. He is very difficult to deal with. I don't advise taking his class.
This class really isn't too bad. You need to read the slides and keep up with the homework but if you can solve a fair amount of the homework problems you should do well on the test. He is a little difficult to understand but not a mean professor by any means. Studied a little bit every day or so and you should be fine
Incredibly unhelpful, Z-scores well, which is good because the tests and quizzes are poorly designed. Clarity is poor, has severely diminished my interest in chemistry, try to find someone else.
The only reason I didn't fail was because there is a very generous curve. He emphasizes studying/learning from the lecture notes but I found them difficult to understand. When taking problems from the textbook, answers given in the solutions manual are apparently incorrect which makes checking answers almost impossible.
He really was quite useless, and little that I learned this semester was learned in class. However, it's entirely possible to teach yourself chemistry from the practice problems, and college classes OFTEN expect you to teach yourself... With that said, his lack of skill in teaching is hardly an excuse to do poorly.
Class is pointless. He doesn't teach or explain things well at all. All of his slides are on blackboard and he reads off of them word for word in class. If you have to take him, find a good tutor. You'll need it.
Unclear. He scribbles all over the board and no one follows him as far as I can tell. He needs to use a powerpoint, because the constant jumping around on a chalk board is impossible to understand.
Hard to follow. Teaches major concepts, but does not teach much more.
Jacobsen is very hard to understand. He reads directly off power points, which mostly cover theory and history, while the tests and quizzes are all math. If you ask a question in class, he gets upset and doesn't answer clearly. He doesn't show you how to do the sample problems assigned, but takes points off on quizzes if your work differs from his.
No one comes to class and those who do don't pay attention because there is no point. I have taught myself chemistry this semester through using the textbook and solutions manual.
No one ever attends class and those who do, don't pay attention because there is absolutely no point. I've been taught the entire chemistry course by people on my floor because his power points are ridiculous and not informative in the slightest. You definitely need the textbook because you will do all of your learning out of it.
He didn't lecture on the material on the test. Points were not changed on tests even when he admitted I should have received partial credit. He does not respect students and told me to my face that "you would have to be ignorant to fail my class". I have thought multiple times about changing my major because of him. Avoid taking his class.
Absolutely zero point in going to class since the lectures are completely useless. He posts powerpoints, but those are also useless. Made a mistake in taking him since he was the last teacher for chem left when i registered. Tests are impossible and if not for the curve everyone would fail. Don't take this class, not worth the headache... trust me.
Heiko Jacobsen and his TA's are very uniformed on the subject matter of the labs. His lab manual is terrible. The prelab questions are ambiguous, and the grading is totally unfair.
Don't. Just Don't. This is that teacher you just don't want to take.
Jacobsen is a very smart guy who is only looking out for the students. He can be extremely intimidating, and come off as a bit rude, but deep down he is willing to help you as much as you need. I came into his class never having taken Chem (barely any in high school) and walked out with an A- in both 1 & 2. you will need to work very hard though.
I like that i could skip class because he provides a powerpoint lecture and he uploads it online for students to read. i came in having already taken AP Chem so I did decent in the class. his tests are more mathematical than conceptual
Fast test takers will likely do fine on his tests. But they were my worst nightmare. His lecture note are confusing as hell. He expects you to get things as fast as he does. I had a B- until i got a 17% on test #2 & had to withdrawal. I had a 98% in chem in HS so this was bizarre. Nice guy, terrible teacher. But I was definitely an extreme case.
Dr. Jacobsen is one of the rudest and obnoxious professors at Tulane. When I visited his office to ask about a lab that I forgot to hand in, he refused to talk to me until I read the full syllabus. However, it says on his syllabus to come to his office to ask any questions.
DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS! On the first day when I didn't understand him explaining the syllabus, I should have known. Get out while you can or try to take someone else. He does not explain lecture well at all, and he also doesn't explain his grading methods. No one even goes to class. Be prepared to teach yourself everything.
Unless you have a strong background in chemistry, his class will require most of your free time. He is unclear about what one needs to accomplish, and his tests have very little correlation to his lectures and assigned problems from the book.
It was very tough to stay in this class not because of the material in the class but Prof. Jacobsen, while very knowledgeable about the subject matter can tend to get a bit boring.
One of the worst teachers that I have ever had. He reads directly from his powerpoint during every lecture in the same monotonous voice. His grading criteria is very confusing and also he is sometimes late to class. The class is not too difficult but you will have to teach yourself all of the material.
If you actually want to learn chemistry, do not take this class. Lectures are a waste of time. I liked the testing style, but it's not for everybody- you are not expected to finish the test and it's graded by the amount of problems you are able to work. He is kind to students and sometimes cracks a joke but you are going to have to teach yourself.
All quizzes and tests are Z-scored, so your grade depends on the class average and standard deviation. Heiko arbitrarily sets Z-score requirements for each letter grade at the end of each semester. Tells students "don't worry about it" when they want to know an estimate of their grade. Test-taking speed matters more than knowledge of subject.
I'll be real - he's an awful lecturer. Go anyways and sit in the front and smile at him so he knows you/likes you. Teach yourself from the book and go to office hours with questions - he's really happy to help and a much better teacher one on one. The biggest strategy to his tests is to start with the questions that count for the most points
His lectures are normally pretty dry, but he is very helpful in office hours and a very nice person. I love how he formats his tests and if you put in the work its not hard to get an A.
Absolutely god awful. Don't take this class. I didn't learn a single thing. I was pre-med before this and this class made me change over to the B-school. His lectures are monotone, boring, and he doesn't teach anything! All he does is read from his power points so going to class is stupid. 0/10, the worst class ever.
Just don't take him. No question needed.
This professor may be the worst chem professor at Tulane. His lectures are terrible, and nobody goes because it is pointless. You have to teach yourself everything because he doesn't teach. His tests are also much longer than they need to be, and he picks extremely hard problems to put on the test on purpose.
THIS PROFESSOR DOESNT TEACH. If you end up taking this class you are going to have to use the textbook to teach yourself everything. Don't even bother showing up to office hours either because he is so mean to you when you ask questions. He is not understanding at all and doesn't care about the students.
If you're an average or slow test taker, don't take Heiko. Makes exams impossible to complete in the time allotted. You must pick and choose problems and complete as many as possible. Your grade depends on how well you do in comparison to everyone else. You're competing for a good grade as it's not standardized. Lectures don't make sense at all.
Heiko is in his own world. It doesn't matter to him if you understand the material. He sits and rants about whatever he wants for 50 minutes, and doesn't solve problems on the board. The only way to pass this class is to teach yourself everything.
Be prepared to teach yourself the majority of this class. The only positive in my opinion is that he z scores his tests, which basically means your grade is based on how everyone else does. Additionally, the tests are made so that you are unable to finish them in the allotted time. The problems are long and difficult. Just write everything you know
Gives dull lectures that mostly consist of him reading off of the slides. Quiz problems are taken straight from the homework. Tests are intentionally too long to finish in the allotted time which can be beneficial if you work fast/have chem experience. Very ambiguous grading scale; it's November and I have no idea how I'm doing in the class
Quizzes are taken directly from homework and are very easy to get A's on. Homework is not turned in. Tests are scored on z-score, thus if you do the homework and really try you will do well in class. Lab is easy. However, class isn't worth going to. Reads off powerpoint slides. Went to office hours once, was very degrading and humiliating.
Never go to lecture. He reads the powerpoint word-for-word and adds nothing to the discussion. The powerpoints are posted online but aren't all that helpful since they cover content but his tests are ENTIRELY math-based. Quizzes are easy and taken straight from the homework. Tests are really tough but z-scored. Teach yourself with the textbook.
Jacobsen is the worst STEM teacher or professor I have ever had. He has a terrible way of complication simple things and it 's difficult to follow his thought process. If you are a freshman trying to take chem DO NOT TAKE IT WITH JACOBSEN! I got a 5 on the AP Chem test and a C+ in his class. You will have to teach yourself everything from the book
I would not recommend this class to anyone. The lectures are dull and do not explain any information and you have to teach yourself ALL of the material. You don't know your actual grade until after the class is over. Also, the tests are more based on how fast you can take a test rather than how well you know the material.
Really boring --just reads off slides. Doesn't explain practice problems clearly or often, in-class or on Canvas. Z-curves everything pretty arbitrarily, so hard to tell what your final grade will be. Checks attendance when he gives back quizzes, so make sure to go to class after a quiz until he gives it back.
Jacobsen really starts to open up once you get to know him. He's very intelligent about chemistry but he has a very difficult class so the people who don't do well are inclined to poorly review him. His lessons don't make sense unless you do the work outside of class to make sense of it
Wow What great things I have to say about Heiko! He truly cares about every one of his students and treats them very fairly. The class is tough, and a few people always drop right away and comment negatively on this website, but if you stick with him and do the work, you will do great in the class. He truly wants to see everyone succeed!
Jacobsen does not post grades, so you'll never know how you are doing in the class. His lectures are boring and on material that you won't need to know. His tests and quizzes are 95% math yet the lecture is about 5% math. If you took AP chem in high school and did well on the test, you can manage. If not, prepare for a semester of lots of stress
I am not able to understand or learn anything about Chemistry from his lectures. He rides off the slides which doesn't help. Taught everything to myself. I had no idea what my final grade is going to be.
I took Heiko's general chemistry lab. It was the most disorganized experience I have ever witnessed. They posted post-labs weeks after they were performed and would not notify us immediately yet expect us to submit them on time. In addition, they graded labs extremely slowly, leaving students with no feedback while completing future labs.
He is a horrible teacher and you will gain nothing from his class. Tests are easy if you do the homework.
I could go on and on but in short, do not take this teacher. He made my life hell and did not respect my testing accommodations. He has many different TA's and they grade differently(partial credit). Also, his grading curve makes no sense at all and should not be allowed. He puts too many questions on the tests on purpose so slow test takers suffer
Honestly everyone gives Heiko such a bad rating, but he is genuinely one of the kindest professors I have ever met. He is a BIG sweetheart and really does want his students to do well. He is so kind and ALWAYS willing to help! Go to office hours, because he is very helpful and really makes sense one-on-one! His testing method is odd, but does work!
Professor Jacobson really wants his students to do well. He drops your lowest test and quiz so one bad grade won't destroy your final grade. The quizzes are free points, but the tests are difficult (you will not finish). His final is easier than the tests. He gets a bad rep on here but he is a good guy and cares about his students a lot.
You gotta go to SI sessions and almost not go to class. Read the textbook and teach yourself. Tests are somewhat easy though and the questions are very similar to examples.
He designs the tests so that you are not able to complete all the questions. You only get 40 minutes to do the test . Does not accommodate with people that well . Reads lectures off of slides and then you get long problem sets . Which are not graded nor boosts your scores. Grades off a Z score abs doesnt let anyone know their grades.
He is hard to follow and just a bad lecturer. The fact that the TA taught me more than the professor should tell you something. Literally chem lab taught me more about how to do the problems during the actual class.
If you can, take any other chem professor besides Jacobsen... lectures don't have anything to do with tests and the tests are so unnecessarily difficult. He's a nice guy but it's not worth the suffering.
In no circumstances take this class. His teacher style is jurassic and he is physically incapable of giving a helpful lecture. Due to his skewed system, you never know your grade until the semester is over. Moreover, he shows no care for students that need to reschedule tests or quizzes for hospital visits, illnesses, or anything regarding COVID.
Take another prof if possible. He's a nice guy (helpful during office hours) but his lecture and grading style isn't really conducive for learning. (the other ratings described it well). go to SI sessions if at all possible. Make sure you're there when he goes over tests because one of mine was incorrectly graded, changing my raw score by 20 points
mumbles through the lectures and the powerpoints are written in gibberish unless you have a PhD in chemistry. Best bet to get an A is to gather what tests will cover and read the book chapters and watch youtube videos on to learn the content. It makes no difference if you miss the lectures, as most people zone out on their phones quickly.
His lectures are not very helpful, but go to office hours!! Grade is made up of exams and many two question quizzes from the "quiz candidate" problems, so know how to do them. He is helpful in working through the problems during office hours, and is more likely to curve if he knows who you are. The exams are really difficult, but online.
He is a great teacher, but I would definitely recommend going to office hours and doing all of the homework, especially the quiz candidates because they matter the most. Overall, I really enjoyed the class.
Lectures are boring and unhelpful, almost never went and still did okay in the class. Do the quiz candidates as they are free points. Test are designed to not finish and are difficult. You will not know your grade until the end of the year, never went to office hours so I can't speak on that, but tutoring sessions offered by SI were very helpful
He is too quiet. It is hard to keep up in his class and with everything on my plate, having to learn on my own is hard. He does grade pretty easily, but for the amount of time I spend teaching myself chemistry, it is not worth it. I have scholarships to keep, and he is making it a struggle.
Awful teacher. I spend all my free time teaching myself chemistry with the textbook and videos since he is an awful teacher. However, he grades tests and quizzes pretty easily, which is nice. Not many good options for chemistry at Tulane, something needs to be done about this.
Self taught myself. Entire grade is on a curve so if you're good at teaching yourself you're good. Quizzes are based on (optional) homework problems so if you do the suggested problems it's really easy to ace the quizzes. exams are difficult and made so that you can't finish, but that means you don't need to know everything. (curve is HUGE)
You have 3 possibilities with this class 1. You got a 5 on the AP exam and you can get an A 2. You spend all your time in the library to maybe get a B 3. You don't spend all your time in the library and fail his god-awful tests Pro-he is nice and attendance doesn't matter Con- You will experience constant pain if not familiar with chemistry ;(
He is a really nice guy. However, the lectures are genuinely painful and you will not learn anything by attending. He does give quizzes from practice problems which can be helpful. I would compare his tests to the hunger games, once u turn it in you will never see it again either. Your best chance in this class is to read the textbook! Good luck.
Rundown: -Graded by 3 exams, a final, 6 quizzes (one drop) -Don't go to lectures (hard to understand), teach yourself from the book (hours and hours), do all the practice problems and understand the materials -Exams are not meant to be finished, so you can complete what you know -Not accessible over email, office hours are great to get contact
It is so hard to understand what this man is saying. If you have a hard time staying engaged in class, youll fall asleep in his. He canceled class a lot during my semester and will make it up on a Tuesday night. His exams are impossible to get good grades on and you will rely heavily on the Z-curve. Daily homework, strong accent.
Worst chem professor ever. In class he reads off his slides that makes 0 sense. I've taught myself two semesters of chemistry by reading the textbook. The quiz questions come directly from homework. For tests, he gives way too many questions for you to answer in time. His grading makes no sense, but if you do better than average you'll be fine.
This class competes you against your classmates for the better z-score on tests since you aren't supposed to finish them. I taught myself everything in this course through youtube videos since lectures are useless. I also had to purchase numerade to get answers to all of the quiz candidates that you are tested on (essential).
Drop this class and get a new chemistry professor. Actually useless to go to class. He is extremely confusing and does not seem to want to help you. He is not helpful. Don't waste your time going to lectures or office hours.
I came in on the first day and he was whipping around in an electric scooter. Bro resembles mad eye moody and speaks genuine gibberish. He read directly off the slides, so I ended up dropping his class the next day. I really wanted to stay in it for the plot, but I genuinely couldn't focus on anything but his goofiness.
Cannot begin to describe how bad of an experience I had with this professor. Had to teach myself the entire course because you don't learn anything from lectures (very slow talker, very thick accent), and if I hadn't taken chemistry in high school I would've completely failed the class.
Just don't take him. Lectures are useless to go to so you have to teach yourself the whole course. Exams he makes impossible to finish and extremely hard and they are graded using a z-score so they pit the class against each other making for a cutthroat environment. As long as you can do average or better than your classmates you'll get atleast a C
DO NOT TAKE AT ALL COSTS. HE READS WORD FOR WORD OFF OF HIS LECTURE SLIDES IN A LOW NONCHALANT VOICE. HE DOES NOT TEACH AT ALL. ONE TIME, ONLY THREE PEOPLE SHOWED UP TO CLASS BECAUSE YOUR'E BETTER OFF TEACHING YOURSELF. PLEASE TAKE ANOTHER PROFESSOR. I HATED HIS CLASS BECAUSE I ACTUALLY WANTED TO LEARN, BUT IT'S HARD TEACHING YOURSELF CHEM.
DO NOT TAKE THIS PROFESSOR!!! The only reason I have an A is because I had a very good understanding of the concepts from AP chem. The lectures are useless so the class is essentially self-taught and the way the grading scale works pits students against each other as he makes the average grade around a C, basing all other grades off the average.
HEED MY WARNING! DO NOT TAKE JACOBSEN! It's entirely self-taught, he is negative helpful, he doesn't tell you your grade until the end of the semester. Only take if you did incredibly well in AP chem. Seriously, if you value your GPA and your sanity: Do. Not. Take. His. Class.
Professor Jacobsen is an absolutely terrible professor. His lectures are convoluted and go into far more complex detail than we need to know. His class is easy to master though. If you memorize the quiz candidate problems he assigns you'll do well on your quizzes and exams. You are also competing with your classmates for grades, so be ready.
im speechless. I can't comment on his teaching abilities cause he has none
This is by far the worst professor I have had for chemistry. His slides are extremely convoluted and his teaching style is lecture based with him reading directly from slides which were impossible to understand. The entirely of this course had to be self taught, the only helpful thing was attending SI sessions.
unless you love chem and you want to teach yourself everything, i am telling you, do not take this prof. you have to compete against everyone in your class to get a good grade because he does this stupid z score curving. but do not worry if he is your only option because there are in class quizzes and he gives you the exact problems for them.
I had him for 1070 and 1080. Lectures are terrible BUT his test and quizzes are very easy. There are no surprises and the quizzes are straight from the homework. You do not need to do good, just better than average and you will get an A. If you already have a good background in chem and are willing to do work outside of class, I highly recommend.
The lectures were pretty useless, so I had to teach myself the entire course. Thankfully, the quizzes covered the exact problems from the assigned readings, and tools like Unstuck AI helped me prepare. Overall, the class was a grind, but I scraped by with a passing grade.
He does not actually teach you how to do the problems he puts on the quizzes and tests. Your only grades are quizzes and tests. He does curve everything because his test averages are horrible. He is kind of funny though.
I wouldn't recommend taking Jacobsen for chemistry. He isn't very accessible outside of class, and when you go to ask him questions, he doesn't explain them very well. His lectures are not very easy to understand and he often makes concepts more difficult than they are.
Jacobsen was horrible, do not take him whatsoever. I learned absolutely nothing in his class, the lectures are useless. It was completely unfair as some kids were taking a chem class almost all online and keeping a 90 while I was studying hours on end for his tests and not getting the results I wanted. Take anyone over him, I strongly advise.
He's bad at teaching. But, if you put in the work it's pretty easy to get an A. Go to every SI and have chat gpt explain concepts to you once. The quizzes are free points because they are taken from problem sets so you can just memorize them. Other people don't study and suck at chemistry so if you actually study you will be way above the average.
The lectures are useless and you must teach yourself mostly everything. It's annoying, but the worst part is that you don't know your grade until the end of the year. The tests and quizzes are easy to do well on, and if you go to the SI sessions you should be fine (I didn't and was still ok).
In lecture he doesn't explain topics very well, especially when showing how to solve problems. I had to learn most of the material through YouTube videos/internet. He's kinda funny though. If you put in extra effort to learn and understand the material and do the recommended problems you should do fine.
