Obviously smart, but maybe too smart. He gets so excited and talks and talks and you are like 'what?'. He is very amusing because he sounds like Albert Einstein and he is a cute little guy. But be aware if Chem isn't your thing think about talking Kub
I think he's very nice person to have as a teacher, very down to earth, but he doesn't explain stuff very well. so if ur not very good at chem u might wanna consider kubinic cuz he explains stuff pretty well.
great teacher with a passion and love of chem!
A little bit more clear than Cohen, but that's it. Teaches from the book, basically.
funny accent...does not lecture well! go for kubinec <--- much better lecturer
A very smart, nice and naturally funny professor who obviously knows his stuff but doesn't get it all across to the students clearly. Personally, I think he's just as good, if not better, than Kubinec, who seems to spend more time entertaining the class than teaching it.
Bad at explaining things.
He's so cute and if you go to office hours, he's really helpful. He's got these life lessons intertwined in his lectures. He's very interesting. His tests aren't hard and he goes pretty much by the book.
He is a poor lecturer and mumbles a lot. It is difficult to understand him because he speaks chem and not english...kubinec is much easier to understand. He also struggles with the technology involved (laser pointer, power point)...not too great...
Horrible
Accents are nice. Foreign. Exotic. Sometimes elegant. HOWEVER--his is an extreme impediment in explanation, not to mention his jumbled and awkward syntax and laconic lecturing style. Take Kubinec if possible.
Take Kubinec if you can
Horrible at explaining; arrogant too
he's not good at explaining stuff. the class itself is not that hard, but he makes it hard. if u take him, prepare to do a lot of self-studying lol.
hes a little hard to understand at times, but hes a great guy! Hes kinda grandpa-like, in a "blow things up" way. Be nice to him, even though hes not as "cool" as Kubinec. That is all.
classes r interesting
nitsche is a funny man, he says whatever that goes through his mind.. i enjoyed his lecture a lot.
You can't understand him, he mumbles and jumps around incoherently, if you can, go to Kubinec. Nitsche im sure is a very nice and smart man, but not a great professor.
This man is a genius. He can answer any question you ask him about Chem 1A with a wonderful and coherent response. But his lectures can be a trifle difficult to grasp. He has a wonderful personality, unlike Kubinec who IS stuck up. He cares about his students. Class overall = mildly challenging.
awesome...he teaches really well n his classes r funny...keeps the class lively...
I liked Nitsche a lot; he's a very funny, sweet, adorable man. (Once set himself on fire in class and made jokes about it!) Lectures are sometimes cluttered and he is difficult to understand at times, but overall, they are enjoyable and fun to go to.
hes very nice very polite set himself on fire funny freaking smart guy!
not the clearest of teachers, but his explainations are comprehensible. He only goes over the basic principles so do the HW even tho its not required. The class is pretty easy but you'll need to rely more on self study. Demos are pretty good.
His lectures are difficult to grasp, however, I fall asleep in his lecture as well as Kubinec's one way or another. He is very helpful and nice guy, esp. if you talk to him one-on-one. Make sure you know how to do the practice problems.
Nitsche was a good guy, and could be funny if you like dumb jokes, but i gained a lot of respect for him after the last lecture, when he highlighted the achievements of the berkeley chem department. Kubinec was more entertaining, but nitsche was peachy.
If you want professor that is funny and caring, enroll in his class but if you only care about understanding the material and the clarity of the subject, go to Kubinec's lecture.
Very nice man, always willing to explain things and chat. His explanations are not clear, so even after he explains it the third time, at least half of the lecture hall was still confused. Read on your own if you want to take his class.
He tries very hard but he is just too confused and too smart to teach basic chem!
I went to his office hours a few times and he seemed to care about what my problems were. The problem is that he was incoherent during lecture most of the time. I remember during the last few weeks barely follow along with what he was telling us.
Very awesome professor. I think as a person there is no other who I was drawn to; he was like a father or grandfather in sorts. When I took it he was constrained by power point slides that were made by another professor teaching the course as well, but overall I think he is a great teacher.
took his class last semester...very smart and a great chemist but is noyt very great as a teacher. unclear lectures that did not cover a lot of stuff that was on the midterms. want a good grade - study on your own
Professor Nitsche is a very bright and intelligent man, though his teaching skills need some improving. His accent is not so bad, but the way in which he presents the material and tries to explain it can be confusing. He can make simple concepts difficult to understand. Midterms can be tricky.
Nitsche is a hard professor to follow especially for those who do not have a strong chemistry background from high school. He did not present lecture material in a clear, concise matter. A lot of his lectures were very hard to follow and overall confusing. The demonstrations were interesting, thoug
Go to office hours! He is a good guy. If he sees that you try he will be very helpful.
chem1a in and of itself is by far one of the most difficult classesto take at berkeley.. this professor just makes it wqorse... he is next toimpossible to understand and doesnt explain the concepts very well at all... this teacher and his none class was en
Funny guy. He also caught himself on fire. It was perhaps one of the highlights of the course.
Don't listen to these people who obviously didn't put forth any effort and expected Chem 1A to be a breezy A. The class is hard, and Nitsche isn't the best linguist when it comes to the English language, but he is still one of the best professors of chemistry that I've had. It is also always great to learn from a pioneer in the field as well.
He is a good guy, but very unclear in his explanations; his teacing skills need some improvement. If you already know gen chem pretty well then the class is ok, otherwise you are screwed - he explains stuff as though he expects you to already know it
I learned the material of this course from my GSI. The lectures overall were useless to me in learning b/c the prof is so incoherent in his explanations. Without a strong background in chem, this class will be VERY hard
He makes frequient mistakes in class. But if you read the book before you attend lectures you will have no problem in the class. Nitche may not be the best professor, but he know his chemistry.
He gave resonable tests! If you read the book and GO TO OFFICE HOURS you'll be fine. Study groups are very helpful because the some of the concepts are not easy. Lectures can be hard and not understandable if you do not read the material before hand. His a nice professor, cares about the students learning.
Professor obviously cares about his students, but his teaching skills are poor. He confuses himself a lot, and doesn't clearly present ideas. Makes a lot of jokes, but doesn't always hit the mark. On the plus side, his tests are easy. The majority of questions are conceptual and don't require calculations. Reading the book is crucial.
funny and friendly guy, but has difficulty connecting ideas in lecture. Tests were easy, all multiple choice. Read the book before going to lecture otherwise don't go at all
bad teaching skills (lectures waste of time--learn chem from book, SLC), friendly guy, moderate-easy tests (all m/c, easier than Kubinec's tests). bottom line: take chem with nitsche if you want better grade (self-effort required), but not if you want to learn chem from a great teacher.
Lectures were a complete and utter waste of time. You learn Chem from the book. His homework assignments did not help on the midterms. Hard to do well on teh finals because his lectures were unclear and studying the homework did not help. Very theorhetical and asks questions on test we did not learn in class. Very tricky and unclear.
Lectures are useless for learning due to his rambling, unclear style, but he gives attendance credit which is good. He is very willing to help his students and is a nice guy. His tests are not too bad, but have some tricky/detailed questions unrelated to leacture. Textbook reading is where you will learn everything for the class.
Got low D's on all 3 midterms and final and still ended up with a B-. He was pretty unclear sometimes, saying the opposite of the right thing and then trying to correct himself. Only took honors chemistry so I had to learn most from the book, which isn't that great. The labs didn't connect enough to the actual course material.
Never taken chem before, didn't read the textbook at all, went to every other lecture and learned everything just fine. Except for the valence shell/quantum level stuff, his explanations and lectures seemed clear to me. Fairly boring though, and I found it impossible to listen to the webcast version. Very very friendly and approachable; a nice guy.
Very nice and funny but not the greatest lecturer...you learn the Chemistry from the book not from lecture. Pretty easy B. Sort of annoying that Kubinec wrote the tests and Nitsche lectured because it caused content problems on the test. My lab GSI was incompetent.
I hate when berkeley kids use rate my professor to brag about how smart they are instead of giving a comment reflective of the class. My example is the "I never took chem/only attended every other lecture" comment. That's obviously pure crap. Reading the book thoroughly with special attention to what you see on lecture slides is the way to do well.
This guy seems nice, but he is so unhelpful and confusing its ridiculous. When he surveys the class to see if theyre confused, even if half the class didnt get it, he just went on. Terrible, dont take him.
I was very interested in Chemistry going in. Nitsche is a good guy and he means well. but it is very difficult to teach 800 students gchem in 3 hours a week. you must put your own effort in if you plan to do well in this class. i studied, went to lecture, and went to study groups and still found this class very difficult.
Professor Nitsche is an interesting guy with a funny German accent. It will be a little difficult to understand him at times but as always go to your GSI for help. He uses a lot of slides from Kubinec and Kubinec wrote the test. The test can be tricky. I put in lots of hard work and self-study and received an A-.
Professor Nitsche is very knowledgeable and enthousiastic about the subject. He is well organized and does his very best to make the lectures clear and the material understandable. He is sweet enough to make powerpoint outline slides and send them out to the students the night before every lecture!!! I really enjoyed being in his class :)
This professor does have interesting ways to illustrate concepts. However, he does have an accent, and many of his demonstrations don't have much to do with the topic. Lectures are often fun, however.
He is super nice, friendly and helpful - cool guy. His tests are very conceptual (not too tricky), but if you read and understand the book, you will be fine. Lectures, though, can be confusing as Nitsche means well, but cannot explain even simple concepts, but you get attendance credit for going to lecture.
Funny professor, but his accent can make his lectures hard to understand sometimes. His tests were multiple choice with the majority of questions testing a few important concepts (ie Le Chatelier's principle) which I found to be fairly easy.
Fun accent; a bit hard to pay attention in class. Midterms and final were multiple choice. Tests on concepts. Not bad if you already took Chem AP and did fairly well.
sometimes can be a bit unclear, but the book will clear that up. tests are really easy as long as you put in the time (which isn't all that much anyway).
So here is how to get an A in Chem 1A, (1) READ the book, in lecture he can only cover so much, if you are using the atkins book get a hold of zumdahl's chemical principles, it's an easier read (2) nail the "GIMME points", labs and hw's, so start early in the week, and go to OH's =400 gimmie pts, this helps with minimizing pt loss to tests only
He is an amazing teacher!! Chemistry is a hard class, especially when it's chem 1A, but nitsche is great! If you ask questions, he will answer perfectly clear. He's really nice and funny!! Don't forget: no matter who you have for Chem, it will be a hard class. But this guy is awesome!
Its a hard class but if you go to his office hours he helps you out alot and he really cares, its a hard class and if you dont get an A .. dont complain its because you didnt put as much work as the people who did get an A, gettting a C is pretty doable but higher than that your going to have to work your butt off!
nitsche was pretty cool. he was funny man, making jokes here and there. his 50 extra credit points help so much. tests are fair. hes not the best professor, but hes a nice guy and will help u if u need it.
Chem 1a is a hard class, you have to do a lot of work. Nitsche is a nice guy, but he's not very clear in lectures. Tests were all multiple choice and pretty fair. Just make sure you study hard, and it wont be impossible to get an A.
As someone else has already mentioned, take advantage of the gimme points! There are around 400 of them (you get extra credit for going to lecture!). Your GSI is definitely the key to a high grade, so pay attention and ask questions in lab. And if you go over your hw and key concepts, you'll be ready for the exams.
Chem 1A is such a challenging class, espcecially for the people that did not take a high school chem. Don;t get me wrong ,Nitsche is such a lovely guy. He is always interested in helping people. Com'on he gives you 5o bones points for just showin to his class and the homeworks are not even hard as long as you go to his offic hour and ask for help.
Chem 1A would definitely be challenging if you haven't taken it in high school; however, it is totally doable. Like the people said before, take advantage of the extra credit, study with your peers, and look at his old tests. They are really helpful...
basically if you do the work you will be fine. lecture isn't necessary but go for the extra credit and cool demos. go to the review sessions and SLC study groups and pay attention in lab because that is where you will learn what is really going on because a lot of the time lectures can be confusing. just take the time to study and you'll get an A/B
His lectures are difficult to follow most of the time-I wouldn't have gone to lecture at all if it weren't for the extra credit points. His tests were poorly written, but I was able to manage the class because of Discussion and I had a bad-ass GSI. Pay attention in lab and ASK questions regarding lecture because the GSI will explain it clearer.
Heavy accent and cannot explain anything. You learn by doing the homework (which is tedious) and reading the book. Go to lectures only for EC. The only good thing about him is the midterms/finals were all multiple choice. Otherwise definitely take Kubinec or someone else.
evil bad teacher
definitely go to the lecture for the extra credit, but dont expect to understand anything. dont try to do the homework by yourself, find help.
Terrible teacher. Don't even try to understand him. The only reason I go to class is because of the iClicker thing. His tests aren't terrible, but sometimes they're badly written. Basically, you're on your own if you take this professor. Don't expect to learn too much from him. The web homework is pretty useful though, if a bit tedious.
Heino is a great lecturer and often inserts fun jokes or comments to keep things interesting. Lonnie is great too. As long as you read and understand the book before each midterm, the class should be a breeze.
Easy A if you keep up with homework, reading, and labs. The lectures seem unnecessary and somewhat confusing yet he is entertaining to watch. Lectures are just meant to get credit for iClicker. Most of the learning is done from reading. PS. GO TO STUDY GROUPS!!
iclickers are 50 bonus points, in addition he gives extra credit after everymidterm by coming to class and answering a question from the midterm. he uses alot of old midterm questions in his midterms. the final has atleast 10 old midterm questions on the final so study the midterms. midterms harder than the final.
This chem class was fun in that the Professor was interesting and fun to listen to. His tests were fair, but you need to read the text book, otherwise your dead. Hard class if you do not read.
Funny, interesting teacher...but not that great at teaching. The tests are fair; the multiple choice can be tricky. I would guess that most of the people that did well went to tutoring or are really good at understanding the book.
Kept lectures entertaining, and remained enthusiastic about even boring material. Genuinely cared if everyone learned the material. Tests were predictable and fair. The class just gives away lots of free points, which is something to be cherished at Cal.
This class wasn't that bad, from talking to other friends who took chem first semester, Prof. Nitsche is WAY easier. Those 50 extra points are a major help, they make up if you do poorly on one of the midterms, don't get discouraged if you don't do so great on one of them. Also, SLC study groups were a major help, but most importantly READ THE BOOK
His lecturers are clearer if you read the book beforehand. You should definitely read the book eventually anyway. He's a very funny, nice guy. All the tests were very fair and the final had many of the questions of the midterm on it. And he practically GIVES you 5% extra credit. What more could you want?
Lecture is a waste of time. Read the book and do every HW assignment he assigns. He can't teach for the life of him, but has good intentions. Go over his lecture notes and supplement what you don't understand with the book. 60% of the final is straight copied from the midterms, which you need to go over the HW sets to do well on.
this man is THE GREATEST, made watching the webcasts totally worth it. the class is great because you get extra credit if you attend, and the midterms/finals are all posted online from previous semesters. you have this class MADE.
Funny professor, but hard to understand sometimes. You have to read the text to understand the concepts and prepare for tests. He gives extra credit for going to lecture which really helps your grade.
A very interesting lecturer. He is an enthusiastic professor, and it's not hard to hear through his accent. However, his lectures have a strong focus on concept - they don't teach calculations very well.
He is not hard to understand, his accent is not thick. He's pretty funny and a nice guy. Extra credit for attending class. Big curves on midterms. Those who complain about bad grades dont read the text. READ the book and you will actually understand what's going on and the class will be much easier for you!
Prof. Nitsche is very good professor! He keeps lecture interesting with his demos. I love that he gives extra credit to go to lecture. Haven't missed one yet. Midterm are difficult, but if you read and do a lot of practice you will do good. He's a cute old man! :)
Nitsche is a great and funny lecturer, however he had trouble explaining some of the more difficult and conceptual topics. I found the book useful and necessary for teaching myself some of the material. His midterms weren't too bad and hopefully his final isn't either. And attending class gets you xtra credit!
Easy class, slept in lecture to get the extra credit you don't need. Midterms are not curved, but midterms are already really easy. Take this prof. for an easy A. Read the book, do the homework and you're good
PROS funny lecturer, bonus Points CONS conceptually useless lectures, expect to teach yourself the material & to walk away w/ little comprehension. Not hard to get an A due to iclicker bonus, but an A doesn't mean you understand any of the material and that can make studying pretty painful. Transfer of knowledge in lectures wouldve been really nice
lectures are too general. don't expect to be able to do the homework just because you went to lecture. overall the class was pretty easy because there are a lot of bonus points. for studying i suggest go over the webassign and the practice midterm, and if you don't know how to do something read the book or ASK.
Easy class! Fun, cute old professor, does interesting demos during lecture. There are sooo many buffer points, you're practically guaranteed an A (I got a C on the final and a midterm); Tests are all based aroune either HW/suggested problems, chemquizzes, or labs/discussions.
I disagree. The class was NOT very easy. Entertaining lectures, but you should read the book. WebAssign is annoying too. Get help if you need it. i-clickers are great for bonus points, but listen to lecture too. Sometimes unclear. And lastly, his red cat (for electrochemistry unit), Shotsy, is awesome!
Very entertaining professor who engages the class with jokes and personal stories. Bonus points are a blessing. Midterms get progressively harder. Final exam consists of many recycled midterm questions. Reading the book outside of class is absolutely necessary. WebAssign homework is nearly impossible without doing the assigned readings. Good guy!
He's an awesome dude with a great sense of humor. He teaches the concepts fairly well, but the math parts of the exams and homework you basically have to learn on your own. I loved going to lecture, but I honestly don't think I learned that much from just the lectures. His exams are very fair, but the homework is often much harder than the exams.
The lectures do not enhance your understanding at all. You must learn the material on your own by either reading the textbook (hard to understand), asking your GSI (if you have a good one), going to the Student Learning Center for tutoring and mock midterms, or studying with friends. Lab did not help me at all because my GSI could not explain thing
Awesome professor. His accent is cool, and I don't know why so many people say they have trouble understanding him, because his English is pretty impeccable. He has a great sense of humor and totally has the "crazy German scientist" thing down. He also gave EXTRA CREDIT for lecture attendance, unlike most who take AWAY credit for absences.
HE IS AN EXCELLENT INSTRUCTOR! I REALLY ENJOYED HIS LECTURES AND HIS OFFICE HOURS ARE EXTREMELY HELPFUL! HE IS FUNNY AND ENGAGES STUDENTS INTO HIS LECTURE.
He is an amazing professor, i really enjoyed his lectures and it was an amazing experience listening to his lectures. he engages students and is amazing!
Would definitely retake a class with Prof. Nitsche. He's very funny and makes the subject very interesting. His test aren't too difficult, yet they do require a lot of studying. I wouldn't say that he's the most clear of instructor, but he certainly is a great person.
I really enjoyed this class. Chem 1A at berkeley is notoriously hard but take Nietzche for he actually wants his students to excel. Come to class and get the easy clicker points, they really help in the end.
Professor Nitsche is excellent! He really cares about his students, and the tries to be as clear and helpful as he can in office hours and while lecturing. I also find him to be very ligh hearted and humorous at times. I highly recommend taking Chem1a in the spring with professor Nitsche!
Nitche is a good professor. He's funny and tries to keep the lectures interesting. The lectures are not very helpful at all. The OWL homework is time consuming and useless for the tests. The tests are hard. Spring Chem 1A is graded much more fairly than Fall but either way its a hard class.
I LOVE HEINO! He is by far the most exciting Chem Professor ever! He is so so funny and keeps lectures really interesting with his goofs and cool experiments in class. The class itself isn't easy but it's definitely do-able. If you have the opportunity to have him as a professor TAKE IT! you wont regret :)
I loved taking Chem with Professor Nitsche! He made lectures so fun, I never even wanted to miss class. Chemistry does not come naturally to me but his encouragement inspired me to work hard. I only wish I had discovered his office hours much earlier in the year- I definitely recommend everyone to go to them!
Pros: awesome professor: funny, engaging, and passionate about the subject, albeit not very clear. 50 iClicker points and 9 midterm bonus points are heaven-sent. Cons: OWL is hard, and the book is utterly useless. The time I would've spent trying to decipher the book I instead allocated to study groups, which helped tremendously.
Great Professor! I came in knowing how notorious Chem 1A was, but professor Nitsche made it very manageable. Lectures were always interesting and fun! I came into this class loathing chemistry, and it turned out to be one of my better classes. It is by no means easy, but if you work hard, its very doable, especially with the extra iclicker points!
Great professor! Nitsche may not be the clearest of lecturers, but his passion for the subject & his sense of humor makes chemistry very interesting. The class itself is manageable, coming from a person who had a poor background in HS chemistry. Put in the right amount of studying, go to study group, and you'll do fine. The only con: OWL sucks
Professor Nitsche is the BEST! He's really funny but he doesn't know it, and it makes going to lectures super fun. However, he doesn't explain things crystal clear in class. I always have to listen to webcasts again in order to understand him, but Chem1A is hard regardless. I recommend going to SLC study group and mock exams. SUPER helpful!
I recommend taking Chem1A in the spring. It's way easier than it is in the fall, especially when you have Nitsche teaching the class! For midterms, relisten to all the webcasts in the unit and everything will suddenly make sense. Also take advantage of the SLC!
This was a wonderful class. There are really cool demos and Dr. Nitsche is rather funny, so I went to lecture even though it wasn't mandatory. He gives extra credit for attendance, though. Labs and discussion are okay. GSIs usually don't grade hard. All the exams were multiple choice and easy if you studied. The webcast is very helpful for review.
He's so much fun! Most science professors (from what I've heard) make subjects that are already not-so-interesting even worse, but he actually made me want to go to class :D
pretty funny professor although he can be a bit arrogant at times. but his arrogance isn't really bothering. pretty clear in lecutre. chem quizzes really help. do them in lecture, and redo them before exams. practice midterms and past exams are very useful. do them all. he uses questions over. make sure you also understand your labs because there w
Not the best professor that everyone says he is. He tries to be engaging with this students during his Chem lectures by being funny. He is funny. His extra 50 bonus points in the end is really helpful in the end. But don't waste your time with this class if you are not an intended science major.
Prof Nitsche was an amazing professor! He was always incredibly helpful and he seemed to really like his students and the class. Tests weren't too difficult, very straightforward. I didn't find him arrogant at all, lectures were always very entertaining, he's a funny professor. And iClicker bonus points were a plus.
He's a really sweet guy. He can be a little hard to follow in lecture, so read the book and do the practice problems. I didn't have good chem in high school, so I took the SLC study group, which saved my ass (I ended up with an A). Go to every lecture for the extra credit. And make sure you understand the labs! Follow all instructions on lab report
While Nitsche was a very entertaining lecturer, he was also pretty unclear when it came to introducing concepts. He would often spend several minutes explaining basic concepts and then rush through more difficult material. Luckily, the class is curved upwards and includes iclicker points and I managed to earn an A- despite getting a C on the final.
he is the cutest teacher ever-i absolutely adore him but unfortunately, he is a bit hard to follow even though he is extremely passionate about chemistry. his quizzes seem to come out of nowhere and his midterms are reasonably hard-the averages are low B's or high Cs. Go to lecture-you can get bonus points for doing so!
He is funny and entertaining, but is a bit unclear when he lectures. Lectures are webcasted, but you should go to get iClicker bonus points. Midterms are a bit hard, average is about C. 40 multiple choice questions at 3 points each. Homework is online (MCHEM) and is due every Monday. Overall, nice professor but difficult class.
i absolutely hated this class-yes nietche was the cutest professor ever and very entertaining-but he was very unclear and i basically learned nothing. there are 3 midterms, and i basically crashed from the 3rd midterm onwards...the final sucked. discussion was not mandatory though which was nice. this was his last year teaching however.
