Who is Aufbau...and did he fail this class? Okay, so this overused phrase was the only good thing to come out of this course.
Pretty decent guy. Tries to be funny and I applaud his effort in trying to make this class bearable.
He is the worse professor I ever had. I went to his office hrs once, and when I left, I felt like I knew nothing about Organic Chem. His approach to helping students isn't good and I highly recommend another professor.
Nice guy but he's not meant to teach.. he just can't teach!
He is a brilliant man, but in class he acts like he's only there to amuse you, not teach you the material.
He's a very smart man, but doesn't know how to teach. He tries to be funny, but everyone's so lost in what he's trying "teach" that they don't even catch when he makes jokes. I feel bad for him...but don't take him.
be sure to be well rested before class. it would be better to read before class so you don't get lost
Do all you can to avoid this man. He is possibly the worst teacher this school has ever had. He lacks all social skills and is generally verbally abusive and unavailable to the students
THe WORST PROFESSOR EVER!!!! GET AS FAR AWAY AS POSSIBLE> Doesn't explain anything in class, just tells you that you should already knwo what he is taking about
Strictly research based professor, can hardly teach. Copy off overhead FAST because he will take it away ASAP and then not let you see it ever again. Heard a rumor that he's the highest paid in the chem department.
Definately hard, but a great teacher. Presented a hell of a lot of material very well, very, very quickly. One of the most memorable classes I had in college, remember the material too!
decent teacher but now for everyone. at least there's a good textbook!
lectures sucked. dude has tenure and doesn't care about his teaching style. beware!
Good guy but not a good teacher for undergrad. If you did not get placed into the course by your AP grades or advisor dont take it!
This dude sucks. He makes the tests crazy hard and lectures do not cover everything that's going to be on the test. Attending lecture actually hurt my grades because I felt more confident than I should have. Also, the curve is pretty sad.
TURN AROUND AND RUN! Do not make the mistake of taking a class with Roth. Guaranteed you will do horrible, no matter how hard you try.
Throws transparancies on the projector, then quickly removes them as the class is copying info down. Won't go over handed-back exams, except for perhaps a select few. His reasoning? "In industry, you don't get handed the answers." Yeah, but in industry, we can consult other people, books, notes, etc. A total disaster.
The only thing that is "bad" about Roth is that he grades the exams harshly. His teaching is a bit rough too, but, it is orgo and generally hard to teach and comprehend. The questions on the exams are not too bad, most of them are directly from the study guide he hands you. Just be careful and be very specific in your answers.
Roth is annoying. Taking notes in his class is useless, he is usually wrong. BUT his exams are straight off the study guide he gives before each exam. And O'Connor is an amazing recitation teacher, so its not that hard. Just be wary that there will be some people who eat out of his derriere so if you tolerate that, this class is good. 5 hrs/wk
I just took his final (Fall 2005). Everyone in the class said it was very difficult and they most probably failed. I agree, that was the most difficult exam I have ever seen.
Well, its been a little over a week since my final exam and I still have not recieved my final or exam grade. He usually is kinda slow with the grading processes though
Tough grader, but funny comments on the exams. Definitely a brilliant guy for the topic of organic spectra...
Class was a joke compared to my other chem classes. so those who want to learn organic chem in real way take this class. for just premed just take 307. this is intended for chem majors.
worst professor i ever had. goes too fast when using the overhead. It's hard to follow his lecture notes when his lessons are disorganized. Seems to have an attitude when students ask him questions. Try to avoid him if possible. He doesn't gave a rat's a** about students.
He's a very nice guy like a grandpa. He speaks really slow in class so I couldn't help myself falling a sleep in his class. Once I was paying attention to his review, it was helpful. I'd prefer to have him again next semester than mean b i tch O'connor.
the worst professor I have ever had. he made boikess look good. do not take under any circumstnaces!
Horrible professor. He strays off a lot and teaches using pictures. I could hardly understand what he was saying. If it wasn't for attendance points, the class would always be empty. He truly makes Boikess look like the best professor. You will need to go to O'connor lecture to understand the material.
This guy made orgo horrible! It is pretty much a huge waste of time going to his lectures but attendance was taken every class so I had to go. Take it with O'Connor or Boikes!
He sux...what a horrible teacher...omg...i feel like i am gonna die just hearing him speak....dont ever ever take his class!!!
Dr Roth is a funny guy, and pretty nice, his lectures are kind of confusing though. I wish he'd not rambled so much and just got on with the damn material, but then again, the rambling is funny. I do get something out of his lectures, though.
Attended every class Boikess lectured, once Roth came in I immediately stopped attending, he's THAT bad. Nice guy, but his lectures go nowhere and it's impossible to stay awake. I couldn't bring myself to save my 3.5% of my grade for attendance if I had to listen to that guy. GET OCONNOR
Taking Roth is simply the stupidest mistake you can ever make...I've been doing really well in college and until I took this professor I got a D! It was a total shock and I literally cried my way throughout his class. PLEASE DO NOT TAKE HIM>>>TAKE O'CONNOR!! PROFESSORS CAN DRASTICALLY AFFECT YOU'RE GRADE AND I REALLY MEAN IT!!!!!!
I still have a grudge against this professor 4 years later. He is verbally abusive, which I can still remember. I had to take 307 again with Govindarajoo and got a "B" in her class. She is a much better Professor if you are lucky to have her. Roth will say "You are stupid". He scarred me with that comment. And I cannot forgive him for that.
Avoid like the plague. Although Boikess does an awesome job at the first half of the semester, definitely as good as Oconnor, the Roth half will ruin you, and ill-prepare you for Orgo II.
Lectures are confusing and rambling. Seems like an ok guy, but a lousy teacher. The same old RU BS. You are going to need a lot of good luck on the MCAT with these guys as orgo professors.
He just finished his lectures for this semester in Orgo. He is the worst teacher i have ever had in my life. you dont learn anything, his handwriting is horrible and he is so boring. when he finished his last lecture students started clapping. He is the worst teacher in this whole school, but if you take orgo you cant avoid him
The rating made below mine was completely correct except for one stupid comment. The students started clapping because it was Roth's last lecture, ever, if you were listening? But I agree with the overall assessment you gave... Roth is not the best, but there's no need to write smack about him when he won't be teaching again.
I'm not one to speak bad about a prof, unless he deserves it. Roth does, I think. Accent is hard to get through, and lectures skip all over the place. Orgo is a hard class, this guy doesn't make it easier. Avoid if possible, but he teaches a third again, accept it, and utilize the book and other T.A.s office hours in order to pass.
Called Heinz The Horrible for a reason.
Roth is not very helpful in class but I don't think students should be clapping and such when its his last lecture.I just think hes too smart so its harder for him to teach us average students. Just read the book. The exams he usually makes are easier then the other professors (BOIKESS!!!)
Wow He is honestly one of the worst professors at this university. No, not only for Chemistry, but the whole school in general. Other professors that are bad teachers are at least nice usually. This guy is one of the meanest people ever.I never thought anyone could be worse than Seigel. Unfortunately there's no way to avoid him if ur in sciences.
I couldn't bother trying to pay attention in class. Even after reading ahead, his lecture doesn't help with anything. He's not a very nice person either. His notes are okay though.
He is very hard to understand. His lectures are very boring and the material is hard to get through without lectures. He does not cover things in an organized manner and does not go into much detail on things that need to be. Overall not the greatest professor ever and definitely is the not good for organic chem. Try to avoid at all costs.
the worst....i went to his office hours and i left more puzzled then when i came in...
If you were making around 150k, tenured, and supported by government grants, would you give a damn about your students and their welfare? No, and thats Roth. (one of the highest paid professors and he is not getting paid for his teaching ability) Go to Oconnor's office hours or take it in the summer! At least 20% fail Orgo I in the fall. No joke.
Roth has a quirky sense of humor and teaching style, but people are so up themselves to notice that he IS attempting to make an effort to help students understand orgo. Bc of the rumors that he's horrible, people dismiss him w/out giving him a chance. Read his lecture notes they're better than the book. Lay off of facebook and you'll learn somethin
Not a horrible professor but def not good at any standard. His accent and manner of talking really makes it hard to follow his lectures even if you read ahead and know your material. He usually skips through the material in no particular order which at times can make his lecture confusing. If you take Orgo, you will have him, like it or not.
Roth is not as terrible as everyone is saying. I agree with the person a few comments down, lay off facebook and give him a chance. Even though he skips around the notes, they are intended as supplemental info, not a linear path like boikess notes. His notes are very detailed and he counts on the fact that students can read (and count for NMR)
He's just not a good teacher. Went to his office hours, asked him what I thought were good questions, and he made me feel so dumb even though I stay ahead of readings. He's not good for your morale, and his way of asking questions is ridiculous. Take orgo over the summer if you must.
Honestly I only went to class because attendance was mandatory. Dr. Roth is a nice person but his teaching is hard to follow. I relied mostly on reading the book while he was teaching.
I can't understand a word he says. I watched khanacademy videos to substitute for the lack of understanding about all those sn1, sn2 reactions and stereochemistry lectures from roth. He is good natured and polite, but his lectures do not help at all.
Terrible professor, but tries to make things interesting (although not too successful). He shouldn't be teaching the foundation for the most important concepts in organic chemistry.
the worst professor i have ever had. makes absolutely no sense during class. boring, does not follow notes, does not explain things that appeared on the exam. he actually taught us what we were supposed to know after the exam. he seems like a nice guy, just the worst teacher ever.
Roth is the worst orgo professor. He not only can't teach, but his accent is virtually incomprehensible and he makes the exam much much harder than it needs to be. He should just retire but unfortunately, he is teaching some sections of orgo316.
Terrible professor. The thing that frustrates me the most is that he doesn't put in ANY effort at all in teaching. I thought you need to somewhat be able to present and write decently to be a professor? His notes and lectures definitely do not reflect that. I would fail Orgo if I relied on him. Please stop him from harming students.
What can I say, his extremely low rating are indeed very true. Nearly impossible to keep up with the syllabus. Lectures are designed to make you lose focus and fall asleep.
I do admit that his lectures lack a sense of order, but he introduces two concepts that are often difficult for students at first (optical isomers and NMR.) The lectures are confusing because the topics are new to most. I personally think he knows way more Chemistry than Boikess or O'Connor. If you want to know something in depth, just ask.
Roth unsuccessfully tries to be funny by asking "Where are all the women in science?" every day. He also is incomprehensible and decided to teach us NMR AFTER we had an exam on it. All I can do is look back on ol' Heinz and think I'm glad I made it out alive. The man is literally 80 years old. Time to give it up.
He was apparently a brilliant research scientist, somewhat of a genius, and even may have spoken comprehensible english back in his heydey. Now he mumbles his way through a difficult course. Incomprehensible in every sense of the word.
doesnt even care about his students
You can tell that Roth is a chemistry genius, which is what might intimidate students from approaching him and asking him to clarify concepts. In small groups Roth is a very good professor, and great at explaining things. Definitely knows the most material. And ABSOLUTELY ADORABLE. I love his wit.
The course (Theory and Interp of Organic Spectra) covers various methods, especially NMR, and expects you construct structures based on spectra. It's pretty intense but Dr. Roth is helpful in answering questions in class and office hours, and is generous with partial credit. If you follow his notes and pay attention in class you should be OK.
Make good use of OConnor's office hours or ODASIS or the Learning Centers. He's very hard to understand and his notes are confusing.
You can tell that he knows what he's talking about. If you don't read the book beforehand or pay attention then it's very easy to get lost and not understand what he's saying. However, if you read and know what's going on, then Roth's lectures supplement your learning greatly and helps you retain the info. (Yes, he does have cheesy jokes)
He is a great researcher, he knows his stuffs like the back of his hands, though he might be better at researching than teaching.
Roth is probably the worst lecturer I have ever had. I'm sure he's a very intelligent man and I can tell he's very knowledgeable about organic chemistry, but he CANNOT lecture. 1. His lecture notes are the least helpful I have ever seen... they're just copy pasted diagrams and random words. 2. He is impossible to understand due to his accentspeech
All the bad reviews are from people who don't put effort into the class or don't try hard enough. As long as you keep up with the chapters, you will understand what he is saying. You can tell he is passionate about what he is talking about and knows the info. Attempts humor, which is sometimes good. He has a unique but effective way of teaching.
You can, off the bat, that this guy is a genius. he as personally contributed so much to the field of organic chem and you can tell that he is teaching us the ABC's of the subject. He tries to crack jokes here and there, but his explanations can get a little murky. He also expects a lot from his students--not too much, but a lot.
Anyone who says that people who think he is bad are not putting in the effort are egocentric and wrong. Dr. Roth is an absolute genius and a brilliant researcher. That said, his lectures are horrendous. He's boring and his explanations are brief and leave out information you may find helpful. Go to the TI's if he's lecturing. You'll need them.
His notes were good but he is very difficult to understand and he talks a mile a minute. The first memory I have of him was him vomiting reaction mechanisms on us in the span of about 10 minutes.
Roth is a boring lecturer with a nasty attitude for anybody with a question that is "up to his standard". His tests are given at an extremely high graduate level and rarely equilibrate to his lecture notes or practice problems. He leaves you utterly unprepared and the only way to pass is through his TA and TI reviews. GET A TUTOR
Roth makes Orgo harder than it needs to be with his difficult exams and accent. The textbook is your best friend when he's lecturing.
Roth has a research lab that has undergrads, grads, and post docs. Therefore, he has high expectations. He believes that we are organic chemists who are able to grasp any theory mentioned. Unfortunately, we are only novices in Orgo and in Chem in general who has to take this sophomore-level course in order to fulfill a requirement.
Some of questions that are on Roth's exams must have came from the details in his papers.
Roth weeds out people from grad or med school with his difficult exams that came from his publications and his absurd grading scale.
He is very creative with his exams, this man can write the hardest exam you will ever take in your life. He is brilliant in a way that make all orgo students cry rivers. He teaches the hardest materials ever, all mechanisms and reactions.
He may be a bit hard to understand during class - but I found the trick: sit there and LISTEN. His notes aren't so bad but I would highly recommend going to office hours - I outlined his notes, then added in details from office hours. If you ask him questions after lecture, he does not hesitate to help you. I appreciated him as a lecturer.
He looks like a sweet guy and can make some funny jokes during lecture, but overall the Orgo department at rutgers is probably one of the worst. It seems like they get satisfaction out of making every student miserable. It is challenging to a very unnecessary level. Some of the questions asked during the exam are beyond the scope of the course.
Averages for is exams are in the high 40s low 50s. So pretty much most of the students were only able to understand about 50% of the material presented. I think that pretty much explains it all.
The only thing I respect about Roth is his own knowledge about organic chem. However, I don't appreciate him as a person and certainly not as a professor. I didn't understand a topic so I visited his office hours(on Busch, so very out of the way) just for him to sigh every time I didn't understand something he said. Sorry for wanting to learn
Hardly went to Roth's lectures and pulled an 80 on "his" midterm; his subject matter seemed to be the easiest of the professors, so do well on midterm 2 before they throw tons more reactions at you. He flies through lecture slides and his relatively thick accent doesn't help much, either, but he's occasionally funny. Doesn't like dumb questions.
Roth's teaching ability is abysmal. Any certified educator would upset to know that this man is teaching such a high-stakes class. He might be knowledgeable, but he is probably the most inarticulate, incoherent teacher I ever had. Rely on TA's if you want to succeed in his portion of the class.
This class is difficult. Exams emphasize concepts that were not covered in lecture. Those concepts are probably from PChem 327 and 328, Orgo 411, and Chem 475 and 480 since I had to use partial derivatives and integration to solve some of the problems on the exams. Try to take this class off season.
Genius. Does not know how to teach. Must read textbook and find good online resources or go to office hours
He has a thick accent and doesn't enunciate well, it can be hard to understand him. He tries to make jokes and it's nice of him, but I'd rather understand orgo than joke around in class. He has a habit of constantly bringing up how poor the class average is, any time we have a clicker question, even weeks after the test.
Roth is an actual expert in NMR (Google it) but that does not mean that he teaches well. I walked out of EVERY SINGLE lecture confused. He explains something on one slide then will ask you about it in a clicker question 10 mins later. He regurgitates material very fast instead of teaching it. He speaks to you like you already know orgo. Bad overall
Professor Heinz E. Roth was one of the best professors I trained under while an undergraduate at Rutgers College. He challenged me the most of all of my professors and inspired me to learn and succeed. I failed one of his tests as half the class or more usually failed his tests. I was dejected but rose to the occasion. I crushed his final.
Get ready to fail his exam
Brilliant person, but he really can't teach. He explains concepts in ways that are difficult to understand for most students compared to other resources such as TA's or Khan academy. Does very few example problems. Even some of the TA's acknowledge his inability to teach. I recommend using Khan academy or office hours if you want to learn ochem.
He is the recitation instructor for Honors Orgo. I can't imagine having him as our actual professor. He is obviously very knowledgeable, but he can't teach. He drones on without ever actually teaching , makes dumb, sexist jokes, and is often condescending. Recitation is a waste of time. Utilize office hours (not his) and other resources.
While Professor Roth is a brilliant man and researcher, his teaching leaves much to be desired. For example, during class he suggested we bang our heads against the wall to understand organic chemistry. His lectures are awful, make no sense, and aren't helpful at all. He seems like a nice guy, but he doesn't make orgo any better.
He is terrible at lecturing, there is basically no point of going to class except for participation. You have to really look through his PowerPoints to find necessary information.
He should not be called a professor unless the class is called, bad puns 101. He is the recitation instructor for honors orgo, and he is one of the worst instructors I have had. Recitations are absolutely pointless; he just makes stupid jokes throughout the recitation without teaching anything. It is a real shame Rutgers has professors this bad.
DO NOT TAKE!!!!!!!WORST ORGO PROF EVER
He's now one of the professors for orgo, so you are unfortunately stuck with him for a third of the semester as he's a horrible professor. He cracks weird jokes, he's horrible at explaining concepts and his incredibly thick accent makes him impossible to understand. His notes are a bunch of nonsense and you'll have better luck reading the textbook.
By far worst professor I've ever had. Had to rely on the textbook to learn the material. His slides are so wordy and jumbled that everything is more confusing than it should be. He reads off the slides and talks at 2mph. Cannot understand him. Exam is unfair and has typos. WOULD NEVER TAKE HIM AGAIN.
The notes were incredibly unorganized and directly state the textbook is wrong while the class says to study from the textbook. I have never seen such a horrendous class with a wretched professor. He goes on tangents and never addresses the problems at hand. Even with hours of studying, you still won't pass. Posts homework without answers.
terrible at teaching concepts in an understandable way
If I could rate him a zero I would. Terrible teaching abilities and very unprofessional when it comes to responding to emails or even putting up resources for students.
His lectures are super hard to sit through and understand. His presentations are impossible to follow. Just read the book and go to Sethis office hours and you should survive. Best thing about him is that hes only there for one exam.
If there was an option to give him a 0 i would he is just that bad. Literally so terrible very unclear, nasty and mean, thick accent, and does not explain anything. There is absolutely no point to his lectures you are better off seeking TA help or online resources. I don't know who's brilliant idea it was to make him the new off season orgo teacher
Lecture slides are disorganized and super wordy & reads straight from them. What's worse is that he looks down on students and provides NO encouragement in understanding orgo. Nobody asks questions because he will make you feel absolutely stupid. By far the worse professor at Rutgers. Tbh I'm surprised he's still allowed to teach.
just to give perspective, the avg for the 1st exam is lookin like a 30. He reads off slides, doesn't elaborate or teach. very rude to students. took this during covid thinking he would cut some slack- instead made our grades only based on exams, no hw or quizzes. made our exam SOO hard to mitigate cheating & accused us of it even tho avg was a 30
I had Dr. Taylor for Orgo 1. I loved the class, learned so much and got an A. I then took Roth for Orgo 2 the next semester, despite seeing his ratings. Biggest mistake of my life. Lectures are useless, he skims through his slides (that already are hard to understand). He is very condescending towards students, and exams are impossible. Sad.
Worst professor I've ever had. This class has made me hate organic chemistry. The amount of frustration I've experienced is insane. There is no transparency. He rarely responds to emails, but when he does, he is extremely rude and condescending. His exam averages are consistently below a 40. He always contradicts the textbook and himself. Terrible.
Nothing good to say. Avoid if you can. This has been the most frustrating class I've ever taken, he is rude, condescending, can't teach and there are SO many inconsistencies with people getting different curves, being favored and between recitation and lecture. Emails not answered, exams formatted wrong + no transparency.
He made me want to kermit. Please save yourself and DONT EVER TAKE ANY OF HIS CLASSES. He is so condescending and absolutely rude. Again, PLEASE SAVE YOURSELF AND YOUR GPA AND DO NOT EVER TAKE ANY OF HIS CLASSES.
Such a terrible professor. It is rly sad that Rutgers decides to have him as a teacher when he clearly doesn't want to teach nor cares about teaching. If you care even a little bit about your sanity or GPA you should AVOID taking his class AT ALL COSTS. Take on season orgo or over the summer: trust me. Ppl stop registering for his class, seriously.
One of the worst teachers I've had at any level. He couldn't figure out how to virtually execute an attendance grade so he removed it altogether. The only grades for this class have been exams for which the class average is consistently below a 50%. Class lectures are meaningless as he just reads off the slides. Save your GPA, take a different prof
NEVER TAKE THIS GUY. He made my semester horrible. He called several students blatant liars bc they called him out for unfair grading. If you email him, he will sass you and treat you like you are a criminal. He is literally mean. We had 300 people complaining about him in a town hall. He incorrectly graded exams and would not give back the points
Roth is not going to spoon feed you anything. This is a course where you will teach yourself or fail, so arm yourself with the solutions to exercises and get to writing your master sheet of reactions with his slides, the book, and material online. Going to lectures was useless to me, he talks slow racing thru concepts so the pacing is very weird.
For someone who did well in Orgo 307, good luck taking Orgo 308 with Heinz. His exams are designed around his lecture notes which makes it 10x harder because he does a poor job of lecturing. This class is basically taught on your own with little to no help since there was only 1 TA. His exams and grading scheme was unfair. Save yourself from him.
This class was not as bad as I thought it would be as long as you put in the work. Tips: 1. Do not touch the textbook. All of the test questions come from his slides 2. Attending lecture is a waste of time. Spend that time looking over his slides 3. He is definitely not the best at explaining the material, but in office hours he gave good tips
This is a challenging course. While not perfect, Dr. Roth is a kind professor who is very knowledgeable about organic chemistry and more than willing to help. Tests are difficult but definitely doable if you dedicate significant time to studying. Office hours are crucial. Just give him a chance and you will learn so much, and maybe even enjoy orgo!
I really tried my hardest to like this professor. This man is the reason why i will be giving up my dream of becoming a doctor. This man did not even care that classes are being taken online. I honestly feel like he made the class 10 times harder online than he would've in person. AVOID HIM AT ALL COST!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
His lectures were boring & his slides were confusing. He does not know how to use technology. The book did not help because he claimed the book did things wrong. Grades were based off of exams only. His exams were written so poorly that they were mostly a guessing game. His ego was huge and he called students dumb and liars. AVOID IF YOU CAN.
I absolutely hated taking this class with him. It honestly turned into a self-study course. I didn't learn anything from lectures and recitations were kinda helpful. I mainly used the textbook and videos to do well in this class. The exams were crazy hard and the class was solely based on exams. Take it with anyone else.
i'm gonna be honest this is my first day of lecture with him but homie went through his entire blood line the first day, didn't discuss the syllabus at all, and went straight into lecture, which pretty much tells me all I need to know. I was warned about taking him but I have no other choice so I guess I'm teaching myself this semester :)
I know Professor Roth has good intentions and he seems like a nice guy. However, he can not teach for his life. Slides are difficult to understand, and our grade is only made up of exams which is awful. Lectures are useless and you will end up teaching yourself. I thought i'd be fine bc i ended up fine teaching myself gen chem but im barely passing
Even you learn all material from textbook, you still cannot do well on his exam. IT IS REALLY HARD. and the lecture notes is really mess up. I will retake Orgo for summer.
Listen to me when I say this all these reviews are 100% correct about this absolute awful dude. Orgo is already a tough subject and taking it with Roth makes it 100x worse. His entire class is grades on 3 exams and 1 final which are all cumulative. Despite the terrible reviews I took his class and regret it everyday. DON'T TAKE ANY OF HIS CLASSES!!
I thought he was okay! I didn't mind his lectures and the curve was nice!
Dr. Roth is not the best choice to make for organic chemistry. He is a pretty nice guy, but simply reads off the powerpoint slides in his thick german accent and does not promote student learning. Exam grades continue to be in the 30s and 40s for each exam -- to be frank though, the whole Chemistry department and all its professors are god awful.
DO NOT TAKE ORGO OFF SEASON! Exam averages in the on season classes is a 56 while exam averages in off season classes (Roth) is a 37! You have been warned. His exams are much harder than the classes on season
He is horrible at teaching lectures, doesn't explain and doesn't seem to care for his students. I can't believe he is still at rutgers and people let him teach. I had to drop the class before the first exam because it was that bad. I cried each day from not understanding the material and he goes through it super fast. Get ready to teach yourself!
I don't understand the hate Professor Roth gets. He was super helpful and very reasonable in his grading. Exams were curved fairly and the overall class was too. In comparison to Sethi online, his notes were much clearer and easier to follow. Honestly a great professor for a very difficult class. 100% wish I could take again for Orgo 2.
Absolutely not good.
Organic chemistry is a difficult subject, but professor Heinz makes it more bearable. He is always prompt to answer questions, in fact, he encourages them. His way of teaching is very effective IF one reads the book before lecture. His exams tend to be a little more difficult than the exercises, make sure to go to OH and youll be fine. He jokes a
Professor Roth is not nearly as bad as people say he is. It is a challenging class for sure but if you skim the chapter before lecture then you'll be in good shape. He is accessible outside of lectures during office hours or via email. His slides (made available to students) are pretty well put together and helpful for understanding content.
Dr. Roth was very knowledgable. Coming from professor Jimenez he is amazing. His lectures were much more informative and better organized than hers. Everything on the exam was in the lectures, so understanding all those concepts guarantees you a good grade. The exams are very difficult but he really tries to prepare you for them.
Dr. Roth gets an unreasonable amount of hate on here. He's a solid professor. His lectures aren't the best, but the slides are well organized, and every exam question is somehow derived from info found on them. Exams are extremely difficult, but very well curved. Massive grade cutoff changes at the end of the course mean you can pass with a 40.
I never understood the hate Professor Roth would get. Orgo is a hard subject, but coming from other professors, Roth makes it bearable. His lecture slides are clear and easy to follow, and the exams do not stray far from them. Exams are hard, but he is very forgiving in his grading. Exams get boosted AND the final grade is curved. Super reasonable
HDR is one of the best profs I have taken. Orgo may seem impenetrable & success in ochem is difficult. It will take HOURS out of your week. Roth provides students with everything they need to pass. This is one of those classes where u need to teach yourself. MASTER every problem set, figure out what material is on exams and you will be fine.
Roth's class was the most disorganized course I have ever taken. His lecture slides can be confusing at times. It was not uncommon to have exam/class information be conveyed unclearly. Answer keys are consistently incorrect. Don't bother with provided material, READ THE TEXTBOOK. He's an alright guy, but be prepared to teach yourself.
He CANNOT proofread his exams or practice set problems, leading to more confusion than needed. You're better off making more use of your time by reading the textbook and looking at his notes instead of going to class. Overall, doing his practice set problems and SSAs helped with preparing for exams, and his curves were very generous.
He will blame us for failing while his passing averages are in the 30s. Terrible slides, barely understandable and you need to resort to outside sources to be able to pass. And not even pass with an A, more like a C. He doesn't teach problems, just criticizes. Youre teaching yourself. Idk how i passed orgo 1, lets hope god is real.
Better than last sem in 307. I'll say the same thing I said last time: Read the textbook. Orgo 2 is on-par with, or even harder than, orgo 1. Be sure to know how to read NMR spectra, he'll ask about it the entire semester!
Fantastic recitation professor! Really made concepts make more sense and ployed humor to make class more bearable.
Professor Roth made the tough ORGO material more bearable with humor. The recitations were fantastic for clarifying concepts. I found Unstuckstudy and the free textbook super helpful too.
