She is a very laid-back teacher. You'll enjoy her classes!
Too much work for a speech class! Avoid her if you're not a comm. major.
If you have to talk a speech class take it with Mrs. Acosta.
she is a nice teacher and her class is fun
Very nasty teacher to the students!!! She needs to learn some manners and she could keep her comments to herself and way to much work for a basic speech class. Avoid her if all possible.
If you like teachers who lose your papers and don't tell you until 2 days before finals that they're gone and you're going to fail then this is the teacher for you. She is one of the worst teachers I have every had!!! Avoid if possible!!!

Treats you like a five year old
Mrs Acosta is wonderful, she is very fair and if you do the work and have respect for her she will return it. This class was fun and I never had a problem.
she is very discrimiative towards different groups, if you're a jock don't take she will not like you and will make your life hell. She shows favortisom
She treat you like you are retarded! she is not clear untilabout the 2nd week. then she expects you to know exactly what she wants! She seems as if she got picked on in elementary and is now taking it out on everyone!
for being a speech class i guess it was easy. beside getting up in front of everyone it was easy. she does make you do research papers for two of ur speechs but it helps in the long run cuss then ur prepared to speech. got an A.
The class is an easy A if you try and do your homework. Her class is easy and fun, but she does have favorites. She talks to people as if she was better than them. I do recommend her class because she is better than A. Todd!
No doubt the hardest speech 1 class on campus, but she makes it interesting. Do your work and you'll pass.
Good teacher.
she is very had and does not help you much but makes the class very fun with a lot of projects. only 4 speeches
I liked her and her class.
She is so unhelpful. She is way too political. That is all she talks about in class, politics. It is a SPEECH class, not a political science class!!
Very helpful. If you do the work and ask for help this class is an easy A.
do not take this class it is so hard the speeches are hard and she give u crap about every thing u do nothing is good eough for her
She is hard because she actually has standards. Why do people think they should get an A for effort? A grade is supposed to reflect what you can do, and her expectations made me learn a lot. As for the "hairy legs" remark, that is an ad hominem argument--good speakers/writers avoid fallacies.
I had to drop her class, she had more work and research in her class than my other 3 combined. She was a cool, and funny teacher, it just consumed too much of my time. I am terrified of public speaking like most people. My advice: take it over the summer, and not with her.
She required lot sof research but she is very helpful and fair. I would definately take more classes from her.
don't really like her. everything she says is in exact speech format, so she doesn't seem like a real person ever. she never just tells a story or talks, everything she says sounds very planned out and it made her very distant to me.
i dont know what you slackers are complaining about. its pretty easy and understandable what is required. she will always help you if you need it. its your own fault if you dont get an A.
Her class was fairly easy, and I got a good grade, but I could hardly stand the class. She's very opinionated, and doesn't keep anything to herself. Too much time was spent listening to her view on everything, and for that reason I don't feel I really learned much about speech.
great class. she actualy made it enjoyable to learn all the nitty gritty things about different persuassion modles. Was a very fun class. she has strong oppinions but she dosn't force them on any one. a lot of class discussion
Horrible teacher and horrible class avoid her if you are republican or drive an SUV or she'll ream you for fun. The class was easy but having to see her every week was hell on earth.

I like her. I think she makes my speech class fun. Pretty good teacher..

I loved her as a teacher

Fairly easy class, just stay ontop of your speaches and your good
I liked her she was really cool and she made the class fun. I recommend her to anyone wanting to take a speech class.
FUN CLASS. COOL TEACHER!! GEEP UP WITH YOUR SPEECHES AND YOUR COOL.
Easy fun class!! As long as you do your speeches and put a little effort into them, you'll get an A! I got A's on every one of my speeches and one of them i did the night before! She's an easy teacher and she grades really easy! If i had to take another comm class, i would deffinetly take it with her!
She is a good teacher, but she likes to here herself talk! It gets annoying after a while.
she was great!! easy class and notecards are allowed!
Good teacher. Her class is pretty tough, but you will be a better speaker in the end. If you're looking to take an easy class, choose a different teacher.
Acosta is fair. If you like conservatives, take A.Todd. If you like liberals, take Acosta. If you want to be confused take them both at the same time, i did. Acosta is cool becasue she is very open, and you can talk about anything in your topic. So you dont have to hold back.
Really fun class and an easy A. Hecka confusing though! The assignments were vague, but the final assignment is a lot of fun!
She may seem kind of mean the first week, but it's just a front. She's a really fun person, she's loves the class and her job which makes it really fun. The class is super easy, just do your work.
Helen was a good teacher, but her constant ramblings for the democratic party made class nearly unbearable. She is, however, accomodating when unexpected circumstances arise.
Easy going professor that really enjoys teaching and will work with you.
Helen is a great teacher. To do well in this class, you just have to do the work. I found the assignements rewarding for communication majors. I recommend her class.
What the heck happened? We didn't use the textbook ONCE. And, compared to the other ratings, Acosta has really changed. She became kinda crabby, sometimes belittling the students either in class or through e-mail. At any rate, she is a brilliant instructor when asked to make examples, and will improvise on the spot. Honestly, I didn't learn a lot.
She's always sarcastic. she tries to put your self-esteem down. and she favors certain students in the class.
it gets really annoying when she starts rambling about being a democrat. she also favors certain students in class. if youre the type that doesnt like using the text book, this isn't the class for you.
Although she doesn't try to force her beliefs on you, she sure does let you know what they are! If you are easily offended, do not take her. She likes to tell you what you are doing wrong more that what you are doing good on. If you did a good job on something, she wouldn't tell you.
Very easy class. She is an okay teacher not hard at all. Not much homework, just four presentations. If you do well in presenstations you should get stright A. There are alot of extra credit points too if you are interested. Conclusion, easy class and sometime can be funny too.
Okay i don't know why people are claiming Miss Acosta is mean. She is not mean she just likes to state her opinion and so what , what if she's a democrat , that does not mean she's judgmental. She was not that boring although she did hurt my feelings a couple of times to the point that i wanted to cry.
Very straightforward regarding expectations. Liberal with grading if you try.
She is amazing! I am so glad i took her class! She made speaking in front of people a breeze. Im very sad the class is over but she has left me with some pretty great memories! Thanks Mrs. Acosta!!
LOVE HER!
Totally easy...no tests. Just make sure you participate and do the projects.
Very unorganized. No tests. Just make sure you turn in the projects and such. You will do fine.(the projects arent that intense...they can be done right before class)
She fulfilled the requirements of a teacher very well. she set out to teach about public communications and the whole class benifited from her. Although everyone may not have recieved an A, they were at least improved by the experience. =)
Took her persuasion class. Would have been nice to learn more about it. Her tactic seems to be: let the students figure it out and then add personal anecdote. Was not impressed by the lack of organization and her general attitude/unhelpfulness. She wasnt an unpleasant person, but this was the worst comm class I've taken, as a comm major.
Do NOT like her. I don't like how she thinks she is always right in everything. The sketchbook idea was ridicolous. I don't see the importance of it. I didn't learn anything about it. She is so disorganzied. i hated going to class and hardly went cause it was so dumb to go.
wow amazing teacher! loved how she taught and how she was clear with all the information.. and her class is sooo easy!
She is the worst teacher EVER!!!!!!! She is mean and rude and bias!!!! She picks on certain students and makes them feel stupid in front of the class!! If you want an easy A take this class but be prepared to be insulted and made fun of!
This class was pretty easy over all. Always attend. classroom exercises help u prepare ur speech(if you need it.) Important to turn in main assns/outlines on time. If you need help meet with her she's always more than willing to help you out. hw is easy you take the answers right out of the book easy quiz pts.
She is very understanding/helpful if you are a person that doesn't like public speaking. She is very funny and only uses the textbook to show the basic structure of a speech but doesn't teach out of it. As long as you listen, do the homework (just concepts out of the book), and use the basic structure of a speech, then you'll be fine.
Love Helen. I had her for Persuasion and it was the best class I took all semester. Leads engaging discussions, pushes you to think critically. The speeches were long and worth a huge part of our grade but but didn't really feel that difficult. No tests or quizzes in here. Highly recommended if you want to be challenged and not just do busywork.
Not a good instructor. She is so unorganized, unclear, confusing, unhelpful, and totally uncaring/calous unless you kiss her you know what. Do not recomind her at all, not even in a social setting.
I had Acosta for Persuasive Communication, and it wasn't so hard. As long as you come to class twice a week, do the work she assigns online, and be generally nice, you will do fine. The only thing a good student has to worry about is that ever-present fear of public speaking... because you will do a lot of it.
Professor Acosta has you read from the book in order to understand the topic for the next class session. She is easy to contact via email and is willing to help you out if you're willing to give your time. I loved this class and I hate public speaking but she made it fun and exciting. This class is a big confidence booster!I STRONGLY recommend her!
Wonderful teacher!
She was a great teacher. Very helpful and kind! Very organized. I have taken many comm classes and this was my all time favorite. Very engaging with students. Her closing speech to the students on the last day of class was awesome!! Take her class, you will love it!
Great professor. Extremely helpful and she cares about her students sucess. I was scared before going in this class because i hate speaking in front of people but she made it ok. Do the work, follow instructions, and attend all classes and you'll do great. Extra credit for perfect attendance and other extra credit opportunities available all sem.
FABULOUS professor! Public speaking is actually exciting now! You will gain a complete skillset that will enable you to effectively speak in public for the rest of your life. Taking this class from Professor Acosta is a great gift you can give yourself. Listen to her, do what she asks- you will be successful.
Show up on time. Acosta is fairly lenient if you email her ahead of time with a problem and she does offer a makeup session if you miss your speech day, but it almost seems harder cuz it's just you and her. She can get off topic a little but won't let it get too far out of hand. I recommend her. Pulled an A barely but thats because I slacked.
After finishing this semester I can honestly say there is no person on Earth I look up to more than Acosta. She's amazing, inspirational, and talented at what she does. Her huge heart and her passion for communication has set a new light to my eyes in the way I communicate to people. She found confidence in a shy class and brought it out of us all.
she is a good teacher and you do learn from her so if your freaked with talking in front of the class. shes the teacher to take
To the average student, this professor could not be considered "easy". This particular class involved loads of "busy-work". A better way would have been to tell us important principles of communication which we would remember. She is pretty clear about most things and is mostly "helpful" if she likes you and that is not always certain. Good luck!
I liked this class. All you have to do is make sure you do the Reading Guides, assignments she asks for, & the speeches. I wouldn't say that it requires a lot of work. She gives you a syllabus with what's due on what date so make sure to look at it. Don't wait the night before to organize your speech, do it & practice! That is all. Pretty easy.(:
Great teacher. Wants to see you succeed. You have to really try to fail her class.
This instructor has no class, doesn't like constructive criticism, isn't the most organized instructor, and is rather corky; but does get to the heart of what it is to give a presentation and is realistic, down to Earth without imposing an ego trip on her students like some professors do. This instructor does teach her students that want to learn.
Amazing teacher! Not only was she completely entertaining, she is the sole reason I was able to transfer out of Bakersfield college! Definitely recommend her!
Helen Is a great professor. You have no test just 4 speeches. She gives out binder work that must be done, if not you don't get credit. I was so shy in her class but her corny side makes it all better.
Professor Acosta is an outgoing teacher and very funny. I was nervous the first day because its a speech class and she just makes you feel like you can do it! She lights up the classroom with personality. Expect LOTS of homework, you have to basically do the whole workbook if not, you wont pass. 4 speeches total. Do all the work & speeches, easy A
She is a great professor!!! If you have kids and a job I wouldn't recommend taking this class THERE IS TONS OF HOMEWORK!!!! if you aren't a homework person don't set yourself up for failure!!!! Other than that.... EASY A if you do the work!!!!
Extreme amount of homework , i became unmotovated when i got a zero on my first assignment that took days to finish because it was pages and pages all because i forgot one line :( shes Seems nice but she can be meanish / smart mouth
You will have a lot of homework in this class, which will account for forty percent of your grade, the class is not difficult but it is very time consuming, the lectures are very interesting and you break out of your shell after taking this class, the presentations and the techniques she teaches are very helpful and informative.
Seriously there's way to much homework. Homework consist of 1 reading guide 3pgs, 1 journal 3pgs, 4 activity pages 1-3pgs long front & back, and a term project normally 2pgs long for 1 week alone. Just way to much busy work, Helen is there to help! But get ready for a long weekend of Homework. Binder checks make you do the all the work or no points
If you gonna take Comm B6 find a better teacher, way to much homework for a 3 unit class, she is the kinda of teacher who enjoys giving homework and says stuff like "oh you thought the first part of your semester was easy" " because I'm not the nice one, here's this week's homework " worst 16 weeks of my life.
Caring, focused, knowledgeable and kind. She is an engaging speaker with a lot of great in class group activities to demonstrate the course material. She has a ton of office hours so no excuses. She'll help you get an A if you show investment. Offers extra credit but be prepared for a TON OF HOMEWORK. Would take again.
I really looked forward to Intercultural Communications at the beginning, by the end I had no regrets about taking this class with this teacher! She's an amazing person who made class feel safe, I looked forward to going. LOTS of hw, as long as you stay on top of it you'll be fine because it's not hard. She makes class fun, I grew a lot as a person
Helen Acosta is a very loving and kind person. She cares for her students and will help you every step of the way. There is a ton of homework, but I guarantee that you will learn many skills in her class that you are definitely going to need throughout your college career. Best teacher ever!!
Professor is very nice. she is very sweet and understanding. BUT you will speak so beware if you are shy. There are 4 speeches, 2 are 7 mins long and the rest are short.
in class she seemed nice and caring but when I talked to her by myself several she was rude, distant and cold.
A good teacher who is caring and gives lots of homework but is fair and will work with you.
Shes the communication chair, so she knows what shes doing. Shes also really nice.
This professor teaches well but at times can be lacking. Can be slow on grading and usually will make excuses. Speeches were easy and she made you feel comfortable.
My first year at bc. not impressed. She gives way too much homework and keeps her students until the end of class and a couple of times over. If you get lucky and happen to get out early it's only because she has work to do. Very anti-religion and found her to be offensive (I'm Catholic) Avoid at all costs.
I usually don't do reviews but I really like Helen Acosta! I have 2 MA degrees and her class is pretty hard. I don't mean "hard" in the sense of tests but she does assign lots of homework. Ms. Acosta has very good lectures and really puts her all into them. She cares about her students. She does provide extra credit opportunities so take advantage!
What if I told you that by the end of this class, I had completed 98 assignments total. And that you would be given 6+ assignments per week, that weren't short. All while dealing with the class being THREE HOURS LONG. Think you'll get out early? Think again. You're there until the last second, and even later on some days.
She is very compassionate with her subject of teaching. I really liked her positive and uplifting personality. And the fact that she is very understanding and makes it her goal to get students to become more ignited in their speeches, helping the audience feel a sense of connection is the best part of her class.
I didnt like this class at all. I would not take from this professor again. I didnt feel good in class.
Assigns a lot of homework but is very helpful and lets you resubmit assignments for a chance to get full points.
Professor Acosta is a fair person however the class can be hard if you don't keep up with the work. She provides good feedback. If you want to pass, just keep up with the work.
This professor made you feel comfortable in class. She does assign a lot of homework but the homework she assigns is helpful with what we're learning. This class allows you to make new freinds. Public speaking was difficult for me and everyone is just as nervous as you are, but as you grow it gets easier and she's extremely helpful with that.
She is good professor, she will sit and work with you if you need help, you have to participate in order to get point in her class, I made a alot of friends in her class.
Very biased and unapproachable. Never felt comfortable in this classroom as it was a judgy environment. Would not recommend taking this class if you have a different background then professor.
Though her lectures were very helpful as well as her feedback for assignments. But I would say she is a little harsh with her tone and attitude towards people. Often if someone got a wrong answer she would come off as aggressive along if you had questions after class and would make the situation fall on you. Other than that she is a good teacher.
Prof. Acosta cares about the success of her students, she offers plenty of extra credit opportunities, gives constructive criticism, and gives great examples for the homework assignments. This class is challenging but not overwhelming if you stay on top of the homework, because they are part building your speeches and the skills needed to present.
Very easy class, lots of opportunities for extra credit. Very kind and caring professor. As scary as public speaking can be you will pass as long as you try.
Professor Acosta is a helpful instructor who makes an effort to connect with students. While the class can be challenging, her feedback is valuable. Using unstuck ai and other study tools can really help manage the workload.
To all those who complaind about her taking up more time than necessary, you're wrong! Shes very kind, bubbly, and definitely bold when need be. Think of a theater kid who is willing to help you. The class is easy, requires paper for the brief lectures but otherwise she is really good!
At the start of the semester she was fine.I thought I was ready for the workload, but let me tell you that LOTS of people dropped her class. I honestly thought my biggest worry being in that class was gonna be the speech part. BUT NO it was the workload, lots of work. Don't take if you're a full time student and taking other hard classes.
I love talking to new people and I am very outgoing. When I thought of public speaking I thought that It would be easy for me. But I didn't expect this class to have SO MANY assignments. Every week you get 6+ assignments and not short easy ones. She will make you redo assignments every single time. It has to be the way she would do it and limits u.
