Talks a lot about**** you won't care about. Her exams are pretty damn hard, only somewhat based off of her class notes. Boring class, you'll seriously wanna kill yourself.
I took her the summer of 2004 and her classes are not boring, but her exams are the hardest I have ever taken and are based almost all out of the book. She gives you extra credit on the exams, but there are very few "A"s given out.
Prof. LeVan needs to spend some time in the real world. Her acedemic advice to students on career changes and approach to career change is grounded in the hot employement market of the 1990s. Some of her opinions are dangerous to careers.
You will learn a lot from classroom discussion - teacher is very interactive with the students. Midterm and Exams are very difficult, but there is a curve. I learned a lot from this class.
Class is quite easy, the teacher however is just alright. Slide shows each day have roughly 40 slides just to ensure that you wont keep paying attention. Tests are very easy, would recommend class to anyone that just needs to get a class out of the way.
She definitely has real world experiance, and knows what she is talking about, but teaching class through 40 slides of power point is a killer. There is a midterm and final that are so-so, and a HUGE final paper.
Extremely nice lady. Her tests are directly off of her powerpoint slides, so make sure to study those decently & youll be fine. The only bad thing is the long paper at the end, do not procrastinate on it and the class will be a very pleasant experience.
She is boring, bring lots of coffee otherwise you are going to go to sleep. Do not take her. Tests are hard, and not an easy grader when it comes down to papers. Do not make the same mistake i made, do not take her class.
She is one of the worst professors I've ever had. There is no focus or purpose to her course, very unorganized - just visit her office. Power point presentations are BORING, and she is a terrible speaker, gets distracted, etc. then is extremely fickle when critiquing others. Who knows what her logic is when it comes to grading? She just plain sucks!
This class is very boring. Homework assignments are incredibly easy. The midterm is easy too. The final paper is 15 pages, but she is not that strict with it. Mine was only about 11 pages of real writing and I still got an A-. Take this class if you want a good grade, but prepared to be bored.
One of the most useless lectures I have ever been to....
The lectures were meaningless and unstructured. The course materials were asssembled by the professor with minimal effort. If you have to take this class take it from any other professor possible.
Worst professor I've ever had at any level. Her lectures are useless. Her final exam covered nit-picky BS that had nothing to do with the material. Her discussions are very one-sided as she is intolerant of any view point that isn't her own. Her class was a miserable experience. Avoid Prof. LaVan at all costs!!
She is horrible!
get on her good side, your in good shape, other wise, im sorry. I was on her good side, and it still kind of reminded me of hanging out at my crusty mean old grannys house. Easy class though.
By far the worst professor at DePaul and possibly any school. This is the worst experience I have had in the MBA program. She needs to retire and stop ruining the learning experience for everyone.
powerpoint slides are outrageous - my little brother could make them more applealing. lectures on and on about common knowledge - probably the worst class of my grad career so far. it's only 4 classes and she teaches two, but seriously, unless you really want to change careers (portfolio project is decent), avoid this class.
Try to avoid taking her. She is very condescending and always offers her blunt and sometimes rude opinion on everything! It's her way or the highway! She is very knowledgeable because she is a career advisor, but it does not compensate for her poor attitude.
Class is Brutal! She doesn't teach anything. You have 7 quizes(40%). She does drop 2 but some of them are on 5 chapters, and only have 15 minutes to take it. Also, the questions are really specific. There is a paper, that is a "best practice" paper (50%) and 10% for going to class. She is awful!!!
This class is completely useless. Midterm and Final are brutal. She pulls out useless pieces of information that are relevalant only to ensure you read every line in the text. She assigns a huge paper at the end of the class and I know for sure she doesnt read it. Just concentrate on the summary. She is rude and very condescending stay away.
While she may not be the best lecturer, she is very responsive to inquiries on a variety of topics. She has lots of experience and has proven to be a great resource for any questions regarding job hunting and HR policies. Plus, she treated us to delicious deep dish pizza on the last day of class. Very generous!
Oh my God, she does not know what she wants!!! I have to be honest, she is a fair grader, BUT no benefit from her classes at all. Be ready to work your ass off, but learn nothing!!!!!
Nice lady but a little strange. Wants to help people although she comes off very blunt. She does not like having her opinion challenge. Do it anyway just for the fun of it. Or better yet, take a different professor.
Helen has no idea what's going on in the real world. Crazy grader, has no idea what she wants. Holds "conferences" with students in front of the whole class for all to hear. If she picks you to be on her good side you'll get A's for the quarter. Otherwise you're screwed. Avoid her!!
Easiest A I have received. She reads straight form PPT and wont entertain much participation. Didn't learn much, but if you want an easy A, take her
Lavan reads straight from powerpoint notes. If attendance was not taken, lectures would be useless. Workload is okay, but in the summer it is incredible! Easy grader, but it is hard to get her to tell you what she wants. Terrible feedback on assignments.
horrible teacher doesn't know how to teach give an online test but doesn't consider software problem. she is ignorant and if you have a different point of view she would not like you. doesn't have any respect to people and everything you say is wrong.. since we start the class we didn't study anything helpful. AVOID TAKING HER IF YOU DON'T HAVE 2
Lavan has her opinions, and you have to agree with her to get the grade you want. She discusses peoples grades in front of the whole class. Tells you how your career path is all WRONG and then expects a complement. You learn how to argue better in her class. Online Mid Term and Final, no hw.
DO NOT WATE YOUR TIME IF YOU DONT HAVE TO... she is the worst ever.. she gave us a test online with open books, yet balme us of cheating... you can copy from the internet from the book from your note but you cant get help from a preson sitting next to you. she blame the all class for it can it be more crazy then that dont waset your energy in her
RUN AS FAR AWAY FROM THIS WOMAN AS YOU CAN. She's absolutely terrible! She doesnt understand the world of HR, has NEVER worked a day in her life for a company, teaches based on her own theories rather than first hand, practical application. VERY opinionated and refuses to entertain anything but her own views. Spend your tuition $$ elsewhere!
She is nice but too boring. She expects you to know so many concepts. We had to do journals of everything we went through in class and didnt give us the time to work on them. Even though the midterm and final were on Blackboard, the exam was timed and the questions were very hard. You really need to know the concepts in the text book very well
My instructor in 1973.Outspoken then as the only woman instructer in the school of business.BUT, she was the only college teacher I ever had that took the seniors on a field trip, to an employment agency. She did more than play the classroom game. She cared about her students.Hopefully, inspite of the character attacks here, still does!
I had her for December Intersession class and she wasnt too bad. The whole class consted of group work, and online midterm and final. Also if you didnt want to take the online exam she lets you take a paper exam. Stict attendance but shes nice.
This is the worst class. Dr. Lavan is an awful teacher who does not even teach. I took the blended (1/2 online) class. What a waste of time going to class was. She assigns a ton of work too. She is very opinionated and does not take feedback well. STAY AWAY!
She does not go over any slides in class. A LOT of reading and 3 case study assignments with too much required writing for answers to case study (min. 2500 words/ case). Online midterm and final difficult, but she curves generously. Not a hard class, just a lot of reading and busy work.
Poor Quality. Doesn't actually lecture much. Students do presentations, sticks you in group to discuss cases that have little to do with reading. Grading unfair. No understanding of the real world. MT/Final Hard, but curved. Overly Critical and pompous. If you can take someone else... do so.
She is biased and sticks to her own opinion even though she doesn't have anything to back up her points or valid experience. She brags about how amazing she is. She talks slow and will mark you late for attendance! She is strictly by the book and is stuck in her own bubble. Doesn't seem very willing to compromise and is a tough paper grader.
I personally would not take her again. The material seems to be simple so far, but her "opinions" and "assumptions" about minorities are very biased and offensive. She made certain students feel very uncomfortable when it came to race, nationality, ethnicity, etc. She says what she wants and doesn't care who likes it. I would never take her again.
This teacher is terrific. She is very knowledgeable about the topic and very willing to help. Also a very nice and sweet person. The book is necessary, but easy to read. Great intro to human resource management.
took her for dec. session. attendance counts...you have to stay the WHOLE time cause she will go through it before end of class. i didn't use the book just use the notes...either way midterm and final are hard. 60 multi choice and 5 essays through D2L timed! the journal is truly a waste of time as are the cases. boring!!!
Wastes ALOT of class time handing back papers & doing admin stuff that could be done online.Online exams test speed rather than knowledge. They are HARD but curved to be fair after. The one great thing about class is that she forces you to network with classmates and offers detailed & practical resume tips.Bearable only b/c of the networking & tips.
Class was interesting on a few points. Very high level recap of HR. Cases were straight forward. Grading was easy. Midterm and Final were hard as they were online. Create an outline of the topics and pg numbers to help during the exams.
Do not take any courses with this professor. She has bad grammar, explains things poorly, and her assignments are long, cumbersome and redundant. For example, she will ask you to 'tab' a document, when she really means that you should create a heading. She is also very biased against international students, especially from China.
It was the worst class experience in my entire student life!!! She thinks this is the only class we are taking and requires time consuming tasks!! Very tough grader on everything! The class is so boring and if you ask/answer a question she makes you feel like you are stupid. Just avoid her!
Took this class online. Gives you tons of material/tasks for each section, most of which is irrelevant. She doesn't really clarify what is expected of you so her grading is tough until you figure it out. Grades based on her required "word count" threshold. Buy the online book so you can search for answers to the exams easily.
Took the 5-week summer course. Most of the learning was done outside the classroom. The mid-term and final were pretty easy, the MC portion was 60 points with a 10-point curve. The case studies aren't too bad as long as you put some original thought into them. Should get an A as long as you put in the time and effort.
She offers the option to do community service instead of 3,000 word paper. I think at her core she is a nice lady, but honestly but can be rude. She grades the homework much harder than she should. Will call on you at randomly. No quizzes or tests. Exams online (the q&a can all be found easily on google) Don't need the book or to show up in class.
Wonderful professor! I just took her for winter intercession and couldn't be happier. On our last day of class, we had a pizza party (which she bought for everyone) with review bingo and prizes. She means well and is warm hearted. She is always trying to help with career advice also. Show up to class and participate and it's a very easy course.
The guidelines for this internship credit course were minimal at best, however when I did reach out to Helen for further explanation she replied via e-mail quickly and clearly. Due to what I can only presume was mass confusion, she also allowed us to turn in rough drafts of our final papers (at least 4000 words) which was greatly appreciated.
Run away. She failed a girl for showing up 25min late to class on the last day of class. Opinionated, rude, hot headed, close minded, irrational, disrespectful. Good luck if you're taking her. You can still score well though, but you should only consider if your schedule is tight and her class is the only one that fits into it.
DO NOT TAKE HER!! She is a pain in the ass and is by far the most petty professor at DePaul. She treats students like children, she always thinks she's right and its her way or the highway. Worst class ever!!!!
This class is a waste of time and money, it should definitely be an online class. She sucks as a professor and as a person. She is to pick for the littlest things and very hard to understand. She's very childish and likes to blame students for her wrong doings. She's too old and shouldn't be teaching.
I don't know why this old "witch" (with a B) is still teaching. She is by far the worst professor at DePaul, and trust me, DePaul is filled with USELESS professors. Helen is Opinionated, rude af, hot headed, very close minded, irrational, disrespectful and doesn't care if she belittles you. Please avoid taking her and try to get her out of DePaul
Do NOT take this professor !!! She is full of herself and believes her way or no way. The class time is absolutely useless. She takes attendance but we don't learn anything in class. She is an egotistical professor way past her time. She is too old and lacking technological knowledge. She has got to go DePaul.
Professor LaVan says one thing and then expects another to be done. Her classes are a complete waste of time. She thinks way too highly of herself and in all honesty, for a class that is about job seeking dos and donts in terms of job searching, resumes, and interviewing, I would NEVER have hired her. She is not nice, unclear, and nit picky. BAD!!
Was a good class. Online and pretty straightforward for HR MGT. I would encourage students to do the quizzes/final paper and not an independent volunteer study. Helen was kind and always available for phone calls/emails when I had questions.
Not only a bad professor, but just a bad person. She refuses to meet with students until "they've done work correctly". So if you're a struggling student looking for help, don't ask your professor. She is insanely arrogant and thinks she knows everything about job searching. In reality she's outdated and suggests turning in 3 page resumes. TERRIBLE
Very rude to her students. This was an management internship class, she only believes in her way of doing resumes. Have to get it perfect or its not right. She would constantly threaten people saying "if you don't complete this, you can come back in the fall". We had a ten page paper, a couple articles to read, and a resume. DONT MISS CLASS
Hybrid course, met twice for full day (9A-4P). Course expectations and feedback very clear. Course designed to help with career choice, networking and resume building.
18 chapters , one 2K word paper, discussion posts, 2 part midterm and two part final. ALL IN 5 WEEKS !!! The woman does not understand it is a 2 credit hour class. online lectures are a joke. She mostly rests through the course when the students pay money for tuition and basically totally self learn. Instructions are extremely unclear
She is not clear AT ALL. Class is 10 weeks but gives 5 assignments all due at the end of the quarter, sounds simple but makes the quarter difficult. Her instructions are bogus and she is extremely condescending. The class in general is a joke.
I dont know if she started reading these things or something, but she's actually not that bad. Yes, she could be frustrating because her grading isnt exactly clear. But i didnt get a failing grade so i couldnt be too upset. just try on all of the work and you'll do fine!
I do not know why the University hire this professor like this! She does not trust her students, and she has no patient. She just trust herself! This is the worst professor at DePaul.
This is a required course, however, the design of this five-week hybrid course seems to be a joke. Her efficiency is very low, almost every lecture is listening to students' presentations, she sat down to rest. I very disappointed with this professor, all by the students speak, why I pay tuition? She probably one of DePaul's worst.
rudest and most unclear teacher I have ever had. I feel like she just talks down to her students. It is obvious she has no trust or faith in her students, she even managed to make it visible through her online course. I would spend 3-4 hours a day for 3 days straight on her assignment & Never got a perfect score.
This is probably the worst professor I have had at DePaul. Very upsetting that someone like this is teaching such an important class. No clear expectations of how assignments need to look before being turned in.
Really not good, she gives no clear directions. Get ready to basically interpret your assignments your own way. Not good as mentioned before, also thinks she knows so much because she has a PHD. Wouldn't recommend her to anyone, save your time and take MGT250 with the other professor.
This woman is by far one of, if not the, worst professors at DePaul. The fact that she still works at this institution is an insult to both the students and the staff of DePaul. If you are considering taking her class, don't. If there are no other options, wait a quarter. She does not deserve your time, nor effort.
This professor is not worth your time and effort. She offers no help and is really disrespectful. Outlines for assignments are very vague and unclear. There is a review submission for resume assignment which should not affect your grade. I had no time to submit this and her feedback on my assignment was very snarky and offered no actual feedback.
She gives no help whatsoever concerning the homework. Her guidelines for the homework are so strict, yet don't make any sense. She is very rude with her email responses and it's very clear that she simply doesn't care about the students in her class. She doesn't bother actually teaching her students. She just assigns readings from the textbook.
Horrible Professor. DO NOT TAKE HER. Very sassy and disrespectful to students. Doesn't really help when asking questions. She believes her way is always right. Void taking her class if possible.
Do not take this professor. She is a very tough grader and is not helpful at all. Also very unclear. Every time I request help, she replies in a very rude way and doesn't offer further assistance. Half of my class is currently failing. It's disappointing that she's teaching such important classes required for my major. Horrible.
Professor Lavan isn't the best professor at DePaul by all means but as long as you try to follow her guidelines and put effort into the assignments, then you will get an A in the class. She responds quickly to emails but her class is not organized.
DO NOT TAKE HER CLASS!! Extremely rude and disrespectful. Does not care about her students and provides very little feedback on assignments. When I asked for help, she offers verry little help with a rude response and attitude. Dropped this class 3 weeks into the quarter. Professor should not be teaching at DePaul. One of the worst professors ever!
Prof. LaVan isn't as awful as people are making her out to be. YES she is a very tough grader, as I had to resubmit an assignment three times until she accepted it. But you just need to follow her rubrics EXACTLY for you to get a good grade. Her feedback isn't that constructive either, but other than that it's not bad I swear.
Professor LaVan's class is hard. You need to follow the rubric and slideshows exactly as it states. If you treat this class as seriously as a four-credit class and put a lot of effort into your assignments, you will do fine.
The absolute worst- do not take this course or find this course with a different professor.
Professor Lavan is an okay professor. In MGT 330 there were 2 papers 2 easy quizzes and 1 group project. Put thought into the papers and you will be fine. She graded fairly easy for the project. One thing she does is give you a 0 if you turn in something wrong but she offers second chances.
She expects too much from a 2 credit class.
She expects too much from a 2 credit class. Her assignments are so confusing and are so unorganized on d2l. It's like she purposely makes them like that so we have to go to office hours. Her information is all over the place, makes you resubmit multiple times, and is too much work. Figuring out what the assignment is takes 80% of the effort.
Each submission isn't good enough, the professor uses scripted messages to reply on the submission tab for ur feedback. The feedback provided is very vague and not specific at all. Assignment guidelines are complicated to navigate because they are in so many different tabs. Her online lectures are super hard to follow as she speaks in slow motion.
Unclear outlines and instructions, refusal to elaborate on simple copy and paste feedback, generally unhelpful as a professor and educator. Do not recommend, horrible at everything and rude.
terrible professor. let me have an extension but refused to unlock the project i needed the extension for and has EXTREMELY unclear guidelines and rubrics. final and midterm tests weren't too bad, but the projects for HR training and HR recruiting are difficult for 0 reason.
The d2l class is very unorganized and she had to many assignments that require a lot of work that needs to go into it. She is a very tough grader and strict on her deadlines.
I am debating on withdraw or getting the class over with but was the most frustrating class I have taken so far. It is only 2 credits but is far more difficult due to the unclear instructions, lengthy strictly graded assignments and the instructions she does give are unhelpful.
This may have been the worst professor I have ever dealt with in my life. She was insulting and did not properly explain anything. If you want to ask her questions, you have to wake up very early to join a Zoom call. She is inconsiderate of how the modern-day resume is and believes she is right. Also, she is 80 years old, teaching an async class.
The course is inconsistent with industry standards for proper resumes. Their resume format doesn't align with any business sector, and their career advice is shockingly unhelpful.
Well, seems like the other reviews basically encapsulate this professor. MGT 250 (an async online class) is conveniently complemented with an incredibly unclear syllabus, more work than all your other classes combined, and assignments that make zero sense. It's pretty hard to describe how poor the quality of this class is.
I don't understand how depaul hasn't forced her into retirement yet….. her feedback on assignments makes no sense. the syllabus is terribly structured. do not take
Horrid lectures, just dryly reads off PowerPoints. Unclear instructions, extremely picky with grading. Claims you use AI content even if you haven't. Condescending, impolite, unwilling to make concessions if anything happens. If you MUST take her, do so in a less busy quarter. She makes it harder than a 4-credit-hour class. Completely out of touch.
Strict asf for a 2 credit class
She is honestly the worst professor I have ever had. She gives unclear feedback and then grades your work harshly. Not worth taking her for a 2 credit class at all trust. Also says you use ai when you didn't. I should've waited to take this class with another professor. All these rating for her are true.
For my sports fans, Helen LaVan is the Angel Hernandez of the MLB. One only wonders why she's been a teacher for so long and how she hasn't retired. Arguably the worst professor at DePaul University. Absolute horrific grading and isn't helpful when you email her. Her instructions for assignments are unclear. Her grading is tough with no explanation
Probably one of the Worst Professors at Depaul, Her D2L is all over the place, She can barely explain anything regarding her feedback, and she doesn't process anything well Avoid at All cost!
This professor should be fired. The class is fully online but the lectures she made are just links that don't work. It's such an important class but I feel actually slighted because of this teacher and how much she didn't teach or even seem to care about her students.
Very nasty lady with zero respect. Makes wrongful accusations not based on facts without apologizing. I went to DePaul to report her and they aren't on your side either. Don't waste your time or money taking this class because it'll ruin your GPA.
