Good lecturer, but she uses her own text which REALLY needs grammar help

Loved her (both times I took her classes). Takes forever to get a test or paper back, but she is a great and helpful teacher.
her own textbook is not very good...3 quizzes a week and weekly tests get old fast...impossible to write a good essay
Her own text is rather sketch, but her lectures are interesting, and, though it's a lot of reading, if you do it, your grade will be fine.
Her lectures are ok, but she frequently gives you incorrect information, but just reguritate what she says; her text that she and her husband wrote isn't that good, but you don't have to pay for it..she's bad about updating the web
Boring lectures, terrible text that she wrote herself, takes forever to return material and pop quizzes given at least twice weekly!!
Though she seems uncoordinated or unorganized, she gets the job done and done well. Liberal for the department and knows it. She ensures that all students know both sides of the story.
I thought she was one of my better professors in so much that she didn't expect the impossible. We were supposed to read, but I didn't always.. and I still did well in the class. Take good notes and you'll be fine.
She is very boring and tends to be biased. She doesn't give tests or quizzes back in a timely fashion.
She takes pride in being liberal. She gives quizzes on the insignificant details, and appears to be extremely biased in her grading. She doesn't like anyone with common Christian viewpoints. Was very unhelpful when ever I stayed after class.
Not the easiest teacher ever, but her tests and quizzes are not hard if you pay attention and keep up with the reading. Very knowledgable and willing to help students. Somewhat unorganized, but interesting and makes you think. Take her!
Lectures are not clear, and is a ruthless grader
Lectures are mostly interesting, but i didn't learn alot from them. papers are very hard and weekly quizzes are damn near impossible to study for. lectures & exams are sporadic. Take this class if you want to sit & think about rel. for an hour every day
Ugh. Give me a pillow.
Extremely hard to study for tests and quizzes. Very sporadic/biased grader. Class will make you think however and will reaffirm beliefs. BEWARE When taking though, grading defies logic, ZERO FEEDBACK!
She's a good person, but stay away from her class. Quiz grades unpredictable, w/ no logic. Never gives back grades when she says she will. Self-written text pretty bad with errors and little analysis. Not "trying to disprove Bible" as some claim
This class made my first term at Furman almost unbearable. Copious amounts of reading which didn't seem to pay off during her fill-in-the blank type quizzes. She doesn't touch upon other types of religions as much as I had expected.
You can pass this class if you don't pay attention. Its very easy. Easiest class at Furman. Her quizes are great grade boosters. Beware, she'll make an unbeliever out of you
It is hard for me to do well in a class when I hate everything the teacher says...it is not a general religion class, it is an anti-Christianity class
Dr. Turner ROCKS!! She is incredible. Anyone who's not a moron can get an A. She is not boring she just challenges you to open your mind a little bit---which i realize for some people at this school is a fate worse than death!
Easy if you do well memorizing and hang on every word she says. Far from anti-Christian-- she's a minister! She just presents other ideas. Interesting perspective and is very good about giving off days before Easter, Beach Weekend, etc.
Lots of quizes and tests. Both are way too specific. Not a bad class but time consuming, a little boring, and she is really looking for details.
Knows a lot, but isn't good at conveying it to the rest of the class. REALLY specific questions on tests and quizes. Papers and outside assignments are a hassle and sneak up on you too. Only take if you have to... and that's still a stretch!
A painful experience, and I'm a religion major. Dr. Turner had an agenda from day one, and that was to make you believe exactly what she believes. NOT ABOUT WORLD RELIGIONS! It's basically her trying to disprove the validity of the bible.
I liked the class a lot, and I reccommend it to people who don't mind hearing an open interpretation of the Bible. Learned a lot about my own religion (Christianity) as well as others. Tests are straightforward for those who study.
Wonderful woman. Clearly she knows her stuff, and she is willing to help you out if you need it. Teaches open-mindedness, but is far from anti-Christian!! Definitely not trying to "disprove the validity of the Bible." Great teacher.
do not take this class if you dont already know a good bit about christianity and judaism. Also this class plus any type of demanding science class is a no go.
ok, this class is very easy. I am taking two very demanding sciences and this class at the same time and i still have an A. She appears to be Christian but as soon as you hear her talk you will realize she has a vendetta against the Catholic church.
She's a wonderful professor. She does not have a vendetta against any denomination or any religion; she just wants to present every possible view. The class is difficult if you have no foreknowledge of Christianity and/or Judaism. She's definitely worth taking, though. She's a very fair grader, too.
without a doubt, the most disorganized prof i've had in my life. too many quizzes, too much reading that took up my life, but the tests were straightforward. some days i loved this class, some days i wanted to shoot myself
AVOID!!! She has no sense of organization. She knows what she's talking about, but every day was a painful experience. Plus, she gives you new assignments everyday through her website, so you can't work ahead and you could have 100 pages to read one night. AVOID if at all possible.
If you can learn well in a disorganized class where assignments are not returned in a timely manner, then this class may be worth it. Otherwise, I don't recommend it! She has a great knowledge base, but likes pop quizzes and giving assignments on a daily basis (that can change throughout the day.)
Dr. Turner is the most miserable human being on the face of the earth...THE END!
Dr. Turner is amazing!!! She really shows an interest in her students' lives, as well as their schoolwork. She makes me happy. :)
She's the hardest teacher in the Religion department, you never know how you're doing since papers take until midterm to get back. WAY too much reading. Anyone that says this was an easy class should be sent to Harvard. She's nice and knows her stuff, but she's supposed to. This class sucked.
I did not have a background in any religion, and although this class was a lot of work, it was also life-changing. If you are willing to keep an open mind, stay up to date on the work, and participate in class, there is no reason you should get a bad grade. Don't take if lazy or fundementalist.
most boring classes I have sat through. Lectures will put you to sleep. videos outside of class are annoying and pop quizzes are really bad
The material was interesting but presented in an awful manner. Turnaround time on tests and papers is unbelievably slow and clarity isn't in her vocabulary. Also, the textbook she uses in class and hopes to have published is rifed with typos and errors. One of my worst classes yet.
Turner likes to challenge fundamentalist thinking and her lectures are very good. Like to give lots of little assignments and pop quizzes are annoying. Never returns tests/papers. Tough but fair. Recommended for people who want the challange.
Horrible class. "World" religion all about how bible is wrong, didnt learn a lick about any other religion besides Christianity and Judaism. Daily quizes are unfair and annoying, can't follow where she is going in her lectures. Gives assignments and test back months after turned in. Very biased, if you disagree with her keep your mouth shut.
How I pulled a B in this class is a work of God. Then again, according to Turner, there is no such thing
The best class I've taken at Furman thus far. If you are a narrow-minded conservative or just lazy then you won't like her. It's a serious class for serious-minded people.
I love Dr. Turner! She is brilliant, and her class is so exciting. All Furman students should be required to take her Women in Religion class. Dr. Turner is willing to spend TONS of time with students individually, and definitely willing to challenge mi
Dr. Turner is awesome! Definitely one of the best profs at Furman. She is really helpful, understanding, and she genuinely cares. Everyone needs to get to know her and take at least one of her classes.
Turner is an amazing professor! People who don't like her just aren't open to her non-super conformist ideas. Is very interesting and funny and knows her stuff. Pop-quizzes kinda suck, but aren't bad. You have to keep up w/ readings and study for tests to do well. Nice woman who doesn't deserve the bad rep she has.
Horrible and incredibly boring class. Worst professor I've had at Furman. Terribly unorganized and and syllabus is completely incoherent. AVOID THIS CLASS LIKE THE PLAUGE. And for you goobers who say people dont like her because she is liberal, shut up, I dont like her class because it sucks.
I guess she is pretty liberal, it didn't bother me. What did bother me was her monotone voice, overall vagueness and her boring lectures (and movies.) The topics covered in class were interesting, but I did not really care all that much for this woman..meet her before believing all those people that love her.
She is one of the kindest most understanding people I have ever met. Yes, she can be a bit unorganized, but that gives her sympathy for the rest of us, who aren't so perfect. And the whole "liberal" thing. Yah, she kind of is, but I am very conservative and she never once offended me and made sure that she tempered the statements she made. Loved it
Dr. Turner is amazing! Not only does she take personal interest in student lives, she knows what she is talking about and is very helpful. Anyone who says she is the hardest prof in the Religion department and extremely liberal, obviously hasn't spent much time in the Religion department. By all means, take her classes!
She grades very strangely and I hated going to class everyday
I really liked her class, but I also had a good bit of prior knowledge before coming into the class. If you aren't familar with Christianity/Judaism then you will probably have more difficulty with the class. Class was sometimes boring, but tests aren't bad. Definitely ask her for help, I probably would have done better if I had.
one of the worst professor i have ever had!!! i think she didn't like me, i would get the same answer as other students on her tests and would get a worse grade. Also, she hated my writing and even when i spent hours on her papers, i would not make a good grade. unless you are a good butt kisser, DO NOT TAKE HER!!!
One of my favorite profs at Furman. She expects a lot of debate and discussion in her classes so be prepared for that. Also she's big on quizzes, but they don't have a huge impact on your final grade and are very helpful when studying for exams. She gives the most helpful study sessions ever before exams. I love this woman.
The worst professor (and one of the worst classes) I've had at Furman, and this is a subject she's passionate about! She never prepared for class and can't seem to lecture. Very easy class, though.
Dr. Turner relies on articles and her own text for pop quizzes given bi-weekly. Big on vocab, short IDs..I had extensive knowledge coming in so it was easier, class is mostly discussion based, films shown outside of class often, tests are mostly conceptual essays, all of which she gave before the test. Ask her for help, she likes students that talk
Overall, slightly subpar. One of a small number (1500?) of ordained Southern Baptist women. Class is 85% Christianity, 10% Judaism, 5% Islam/Hinduism. Required very extensive Bible readings. Cited Mary Daly. Sold class her own horrible, makeshift "textbook." Used a cool book by James Kugel, "God of Old." Graded exams easily but tests more harshly.
The material is very interesting. Turner is nice but she is very hard follow at times. ALOT of reading
I love Dr. Turner. Her class really got me to want to be a religion major at Furman. Granted, she is somewhat disorganized, but I see her passion for the subject. Text needs editing, I think certain sections could have been given more weight, but I really enjoyed the class.
She was very condescending to anyone who did not share her views. I was not a fan of her views, and felt dumb whenever I would voice my opinions.
The absolute worst teacher at Furman. She gives annoying daily assignments, quizzes, and extremely vague essays. She makes me never want to give a dime to Furman. STAY AWAY!
I was looking forward to this class but ended up disappointed. Disorganized, lectures not cohesive, requires a LOT of class participation. Vague assignments and subjective grading. SPEAK up in class. With an overall 3.9 GPA, obviously I am willing to work hard for a good grade, but I wasn't going to "suck up" and my grade reflected that.
take this class if you enjoy having your daily assignments given to you at 5pm the night before. this is a regular occurrence of hers. also, take this class if you love extremely vague essay topics, such as "write a 3-7pg. paper on anything pertaining to history and religion." and then have her tell you "this is not what i was looking for" spacy oa
Only take this class if you are interested in writing essays with vague prompts, but not matter what you write, you never write what she wants, if you enjoy taking quizzes that most of the time you have no idea what she is asking because the question doesn't make sense. Worst professor I have had at Furman.
DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS WITH TURNER!!!! first of all i guess it was at 8:30 but still... Dr Turner is really nice, but she never puts up assignments when they are needed and her essay topics are so vague the essays are very difficult to write. Class was interesting most of the time so that was good but I dreaded going to class most days
SO disorganized, very slow grader, few assignments, and some reading. Because she grades papers so slowly she gives a lot of extensions on assignments and she's a pretty easy grader. Quizzes can be obnoxiously detailed, but if you do OK on the papers you will be fine. I don't recommend this class, but it's a pretty easy A if you can stay awake.
Introduction to Judaism was GREAT. It really got me thinking about my own faith and the relationship between Jews and the Modern Western (Christian) World. She is a slow grader, and there are few assignments, but she makes that clear at the beginning of the course. Do the reading and show up to class and you will learn lots and score a high grade!
boring
Religion in America is an amazing class. Although the lectures aren't very exciting, the material Dr. Turner presents is very interesting. She is also very willing to assist you in any way possible. I highly recommend Dr. Turner.
Since when is Introduction to Religion all about how the Bible is wrong? Whole course was spent on refuting what is in the Bible. I didn't enjoy hearing all these liberal theories about how it contains contradictions and how Jesus was not God. Not what i signed up for. And she does not like Bob Jones. She said some harsh things about that school.
I took Genesis of Faith with her. The class was definitely interesting, but she spent three weeks on Hagar - super feminist and it shows! She's still a genuinely good teacher, but a slow grader.
Took Genesis of Faith Seminar with her, and if you get placed in it, GET OUT. The class is horribly boring and she is very sarcastic and condescending with you if you don't share her views of radical feminism. The essay prompts are incredibly vague and no matter how much work I put into them, I receive the same grade on everything I turned in.
Dr. Turner was pretty unorganized and sometimes doesn't answer emails but overall was a quality professor. She lets you know before you have a quiz over the reading and gives you study guide before mid-term and the final. Everything was straightforward and relatively easy.
While the class was interesting, she's very scattered. She puts up the homework the night before and it could be something as long as 3 one-hour long videos. She sometimes gives you a study guide, but the test usually are way more specific and are hard to follow. For lectures, she just reads the slides so it can get pretty dry.
Dr. Turner is a very nice professor! Her lectures can sometimes be a bit dry, but for the most part the class is pretty easy. She sometimes puts homework up the night before its due, but as long as you skim it, you'll be fine. Her exams are easy if you memorize and study the study guides. Easy A for sure.
Dr. Turner is a kind woman and definitely passionate about the topics that she teaches; her class is an easy A as long as you pay attention in class and kind of understand the reading. However, her lectures are dry and boring, so it is pretty hard to stay focused. She is incredibly disorganized, and will take over a month to get grades back.
NEVER take her. Dry lectures, takes years to get your essays back with little to no feedback when you do. Had her at 8:30 and was impossible to wake up for her class. Tests are easy as long as you memorize the study guide. Boosts your grade if you talk in class, but doesn't appreciate people going against her views.
Awful, boring and long lectures. Hard to stay awake especially because I have her at 8:30. Study guides for tests are gone over at review sessions, but still expect to fail the test even if you attend the review sessions. Grades very harshly but has absolutely no rubric to see how you lose points; grades don't come back for months. A quiz every day
I love Helen Lee Turner. She lectures every class and sometimes doesn't respond to emails, but she's genuinely so nice and wants us to succeed. She gave a quiz where we just needed to write 4 things learned from a video, and the fourth was literally extra credit. she always has study guides and highlights on powerpoints what u need to study. a gem
Her lectures are dry. She will not get you your grades back. We wrote an essay within the first 2 weeks of school and didn't get it back until the last 2 weeks of school. When she returned it there were little to no comments and many points were taken off without a rubric to why. Unorganized. Grammar errors on PP/papers. Don't take her REL111 class
Bible and meaning class- very easy, just show up and complete the assignments and you'll do fine. She tells you exactly what to say on the papers. Very boring and dry lectures
I don't understand all the hate for Dr. Turner. She's really sweet and helpful if you ask for it. The class isn't that hard if you show up and do the work. Yes, the lectures can be a bit boring at times, but it isn't as bad as people say
I've taken a lot of classes with Dr. Turner. Yes, she returns work late, but she is a great teacher and a kind person. This class, specifically, was a lot article reading, but class time was always very interesting. Most days had a little lecture and then mostly guided discussion. If you are a MHC minor or religion major, this is a great class.
Great professor. Her lectures do seem a bit dry, and she is notorious for not returning work, but outside of the classroom she has been a great help to me over the years.
Dr. Turner is hilarious. Her lectures are interesting and engaging. She does tend to assign homework rather last-minute though, and communication is iffy at times. Expect to do a lot of writing, but as long as you stay caught up on reading, you should do fine.
The Native American class was pretty chill. The grading was 2 take-home exams, 2 essays, and a journal. All pretty easy but do need to know what you're talking about. She grades very slow, but she is nice enough and clearly into what she teaches. The class was online so there were some tech issues but otherwise wasn't that bad.
She was really sweet & flexible with due dates, & the subject material was very interesting. My only complaint would be the lack of feedback & slow grading. She definitely expects you to understand material thoroughly & use abstract thinking for written exams & essays. The homework was doable despite sometimes only having it posted the day before.
She is a nice woman but super boring and is a very slow grader. We are at the end of the term right now and I only have gotten one assignment back so far, so I really have no idea what I'll end up with.
Dr. Turner is such a sweet lady that offers a lot of flexibility within the class. If you listen, her lectures are relatively interesting and a lot of the readings she assigns are as well. However, she is highly unorganized and you will get very few grades back throughout the semester. Lots of homework but most stuff is graded pretty fairy.
I read all of these reviews before I took REL221, and I was sure that NAR would be a fairly easy "A". I sit here in APRIL having never received a grade back. I have no idea where I stand in here. Do not take this class if you are wanting an easy A or an easy GER fill. I spend more time on homework for this class than the classes for my STEM major.
Get ready to read and write your semester away. Absolutely terrible professor. She never returns grades and is not a kind person as some would say. A serious case of "never challenge me, all-knowing, always." Terrible, terrible GER class. AVOID!
HLT was one of my favorite professors during my time at Furman. She is kind, incredibly intelligent, and has an interesting background and life story. If you want to do well in her classes, you need to engage with the material (actually do the readings), contribute to class lectures and discussions, and visit for office hours.
kind, knowledgeable professor, but 8:30 lectures can be tough to get through. lots of short reading assignments, most posted the day before its due, and have short quizzes that usually have random specific questions. takes awhile to get grades back but offers a lot of extra credit opportunities.
DO NOT TAKE THIS! I am normally an A+ to B+ student. This course had so much busy work and the homework was always posted the day before it was due. The quizzes are on super specific stuff and the PowerPoint is super disorganized. Although the content was interesting, she never uploaded any grades or let you know what your overall grade was.
Dr. Turner was such a pain to work with. She is not tech savvy at all, she doesn't put grades on Moodle and also doesn't give much (if any) feedback on the assignments. I never got a grade for one of them back and she submitted our final grades 3 days late. If you stress about knowing your grade, dont take her class.
I wouldn't recommend anyone to take any of Dr. Turner's classes. She has a lot of trouble with technology and posts homework assignments the afternoon before they're due (which is before every single class period). If you put lots of effort into this class, you will get a fine grade, but it isn't worth the hassle if you can have another professor.
Dr. Turner is has trouble with email response, her grading can be hard to understand, and the homework can feel like busy work. However, this course was so informative, counted for so many GERs, and if you do the homework you will get a decent grade. The grading was my biggest issue with the class, but if you show an effort you will be fine.
worst decision of my life. if you really hate yourself, go ahead and take her class.
DO NOT TAKE HER CLASS!! She is a tyrant, stuck in the old ways of the 60's or whenever she was alive; she teaches as though she is a reanimated corpse. If you disagree with her odd theology ("Jesus was like the pharisees") she WILL give you a bad grade. None of her tests make sense, daily assignments are typo ridden & confusing. AVOID UNTIL FIRED
Dr. Turner is VERY disorganized. You never knew how you were doing in her class. Never grades homework, and lost our quizzes a few times. You have to agree with her odd takes, or she will grade your test as wrong. She will ask the most obscure questions, so unless you know bible trivia like the back of your hand, I would stay away.
This class was based off of her view of the bible and that alone. If you didn't write her exact interpretation of the text then on a test it was marked wrong. Homework is quite a heavy load so be prepared to work for hours.
