Greek Tragedy. Heard a lot of horror stories about her, but I thought she was fantastic. Really loved her course and wouldn't mind take another except I'm GRADUATING!!! Knows her stuff and expects you to know it. Wasn't stifling and really encouraged creativity and critical thinking.
I loved this class it was sooo easy all u have to do is go to lecture everything u will ever need to know will be said there, dont even bother with the books especially ovid it would be a waste of time to read that. two tests short answer, picture identification and 2 essays(only the final). Very interesting class.
Not a particular fan of her teaching style, but I can't complain much since I received an A. The class is pretty easy itself and her lectures are really helpful for the midterm and final (even if it doesn't feel like they are). I don't think she realized that 9 o'clock was too early to get students involved and actively engaged, though.
She is a terrible teacher. She just blabbers the entire class, and her slides are completely unhelpful. It is pretty easy just very dull and she is rude.
Helen Morales is the rudest educator I have ever met. She requires lots of reading and her slides are not helpful. Good way to pass the class is attend lecture and write everything she says. The sections were also demanding for a subject that is not that difficult.
Although I know some people may say they hated her, I loved her. She's British, so sometimes I had no idea what she was trying to say, but she definitely knew the area and was passionate about her field. Don't get James as a TA...he's TERRIBLE. Attend lecture and an A should be easy.
she is hilarious and her class is not hard. just go to class and write really good notes and the midterm will be easy! since the final is not cumulative it is basically another midterm, but with essays that were not hard. she gives you the prompts a week before hand for the inclass final essays so you can plan them and definitely get an A
i loved the class!
Professor Morales expects alot from all students. Expect to be worked hard in this class. Pay attention to the terms that she gives in class. Try hard and try to attend every lecture. She definitely notices students who put in effort and work hard in her class. Hard work pays off in the end.
I dont understand why people say shes a hard teacher because shes not...... Just go to class...cause she goes over everything and take good notes....if you listen and pay attention itll be an easy class overall and enjoyable. Advice...read the intro to the books she assigns, alot of course terms are on their that are helpful for tests
Easy class..pay att.. go to class everyday, take good notes.... ADVICE...i would read the intro to the books she gives because she gets the terms for the test from there, and you dont have to read the rest of the book haha....LOVE HER and hope to take more of her classes
One of the worst teachers I've had, she constantly gets information wrong and relies on her TA's to do literally all of the work for her. Focuses heavily on feminism and manages to avoid myth altogether while being as politically incorrect as possible. Everything she says is an underdeveloped stretch where she rants about something stupid. Awful.
Her lectures are fast-paced and her slides are useless. She refuses to put her slides online, based on the assumption that "delinquents" will use this to "ruin their learning." She also treats her students like 5-year-olds. Finally, she has managed to make Greek myth (literally the most interesting GE available) into a boring subject.
Chill enough. Go to lecture. Everything on the midterm and final are on the slides, but she won't put them online. The readings are typically short and simple. She's overly feminist and preachy about it, but whatever. No essays or papers. 5 quizzes, lowest score dropped. Final has an essay section, but she gives the prompts in advance to prepare.
Horrible professor. Constantly teaches wrong information and relies on her head TA to correct her. My TA was a new classics student and didn't know what she was doing either.Teaches stories that are already commonly known from high school (Antigone, The Odyssey, Oedipus). Clearly feminist based. Is no help for office hours and is very rude.
Morales is one of the hardest Greek Myth teachers at the university, and I would not recommend this class if you're expecting an easy A. She assigns so much overwhelming reading, but if you're caught up then you're good to go! It's extremely important that you attend all her lectures. It also helps if you have a good TA (Cooke was the worst).
Pretentious teacher. Lectures are important. Take good notes! Barely read the textbooks. There is an online PDF of her VSI. Section quizzes 5x the quarter. She doesn't post your grades on gauchospace. Her midterm was easy but her final is much more difficult. Easy GE.
This prof gets props on her knowledge. She knows her stuff and, yes, she has the academic pedigree. Understand that if she likes you you're in, or your done. Kiss your academic career goodbye. After enduring her lectures I wonder if this woman actually thinks she lives in ancient Greece? She surely judges us according to those anachronistic ideals.
Assigns a lot of reading, but I got by reading just the summaries online. In section, 2 close readings are assigned PNP but you can resubmit until you pass. A paper is due at the final. Her tests compose of the general idea of the reading and ideas she presents in lecture so take good notes.
She was a solid professor who gave entertaining lectures. Unfortunately, she scares you into doing most of the reading, but the tests aren't reflective of the reading. They're entirely based on the lectures, down to details you might think are trivial. Any reading questions are on over-arching plot. If you take good lecture notes, it's pretty easy.
This seminar is definitely the hardest class ive ever taken @ UCSB, but thats b/c this class is designed to be 1 of the last you take in the major. Consisted of a research paper & presentation in front of the department. It was incredibly rewarding & I learned more than I ever have in a class before. So glad I took it w/ Morales. Fave prof ever!
Professor Morales offers a unique and interesting perspective on the ancient world.
Professor Morales expects high quality work, well-researched ideas and frequent in-class participation. If you do not take one of her classes, you are missing out on an opportunity to become a better Classics Major and a higher caliber student. Take CLASS 185 with Professor Morales before you graduate, it will make your undergraduate experience!
You either love or you hate her, and I was fortunate enough to be the former. Her lectures are incredibly interesting, as well as the text, and she really wants everyone to succeed. As long as you do the reading and pay attention in lecture(although attendance is not taken), you will do very well in this class. I wish I could take this class again!
Loved this class! Professor Morales lectures were both entertaining and informative. 2 papers, 2 midterms a final and a couple of section assignments all of which were fairly straightforward. My only critique would be that I wished she had been more specific on the prompts for the papers since she does not really talk about those subjects in class.
GO TO CLASS! I LOVE THIS CLASS, I BELIEVE as the years go on she gets much better. Feel free to go talk to her, I think she is very understanding. You really do not have to do that much work and she also drops your lowest midterm score. I think she is great!
You can tell Professor Morales is passionate about Greek myth and her tests weren't hard. She drops the lowest test score and only gives you 2 written assignments. However after the 2nd midterm, the class didn't really have a flow and she was just lecturing on random myths. Loved the class at the beginning of the quarter, not so much at the end.
Prof Morales is very enthusiastic about Greek Myth, she is fun to listen to because she has a great accent. Going to lecture helps with the quizzes but they are easy and if you don't go you can still get an A if you keep up on the reading. Drops lowest test, barely posts anything online also, participation matters in section.
2 short papers (pass/no pass), 3 midterms (lowest score dropped & 3rd one is the final), participation. She uploads slides but they don't explain much so you have to go to lecture and take good notes. Know the myths or the tests will be even trickier. I got a C & a B on the midterms but did well on the last one and ended up with an A- in the class
A very interesting class and it was helpful that the professor was passionate about the subject. It's easy to get an A in the class as long as you do the readings (which are not that hard to keep up with) and attend lectures. The papers are pass/no pass and out of 3 exams, including the final, one will be dropped, so it's not a stressful class.
Go to lecture and take good notes. You'll pass! Lectures are really important. She doesn't post lectures online. Minimal reading. Only 2 super easy papers (1-2 pages). 3 multiple choice tests and lowest grade is dropped. Easy class especially if you're interested in Greek Myth.
Mean and antagonistic. Doesn't create a comfortable teaching and learning environment
Definitely an easy A! Her lectures were very interesting and her accent was fun to listen to. If you do well on both of the midterms then you don't have to go to the final (which means you don't have to go to the last three weeks of class). Great experience!
Fairly easy class as long as you take good notes in lecture and try to keep up with the short weekly readings (section was really helpful too!). The class itself was pretty interesting and listening to Professor Morales was sort of fun since she has an English accent.
Easy A, but professor is rude and borderline condescending to students. Take this class for an easy, A but avoid if you don't want to deal with her belittling demeanor. Would take this class again, but not with this awful professor.
Morales is such an amazing professor. She really teaches the material well and clearly making her lectures fascinating. She sometimes can be a little rude, but she is also funny. She gives 3 midterms(one counted as the final) and you get to drop your lowest test grade. One of my favorite professors at UCSB so far :)
Great prof! Easiest GE I have taken yet. 3 tests and she drops your lowest one. So you might not have to take a final!! Weekly homework assignments are very easy. I would show up because she doesn't post lectures and the tests feature lect material.
Not only are her lectures fun to watch (and she's pretty hip) but she's bending over backward to accommodate for COVID-19 inconveniences. I wish I could take a class with her in person!
Nicest lady ever! Her lectures are super funny and interesting even if you don't care at all about greek myth. She has been extremely understanding and lenient during COVID19 times and genuinely cares about students. Grade is participation, a paper, and a final. Easy A if you show up. Also reading was not necessary at all. Wish I had her in person
Professor Morales was amazing during spring 2020 online course. She clearly cares a lot for her students and tried her best to make the course accessible and fun during this crazy time. She does an awesome job of connecting greek myth to present times and is super fun in lectures.
She is a nice professor. Her lectures are interesting. Although there are writings every week, it is fine for me. The paper is hard, but the grading for the paper is fair. The only part I dislike is that she didnt post how the class will be grading in the beginning. She post the percentage of grades almost the end of the semester.
One of the most accommodating and coolest professors I've had so far. She's also a Beyoncé fan, which is all you need to know. I wish I had her in person!
Professor Morales made this class super fun, and lecture was never too overwhelming. There are weekly peer-grading assignments, plus a final paper and exam. The final paper is really open-ended and allows for a good amount of creativity. Professor Morales was super understanding about extensions/anything you need help with.
Super sweet professor, you choose your own grade! She is very entertaining. There is definitely work but it is consistent every week (assignments are the same). No midterm/final. Can be used for writing credit. Professor is very easy to talk to.
Literally the easiest class ever. Lectures are highly optional, but section is mandatory. Prof. Morales told us that she wants her class to be easy and shamed people that aren't doing well, which is valid. Grading is clearly outlined in syllabus. Very little work. Prof. Morales spends most of lecture answering dumb questions through the Zoom chat.
Prof. Morales is super funny for starters. The class is super easy. In her syllabus she clearly outlines how to get whatever grade you want. She even says that her class is extremely easy to pass and it is. Sections are mandatory, but going to lectures is not and it is not a big deal to skip them. Definitely would take again! Counts for writing &GE
Prof. Morales is fantastic! She is super passionate and knowledgeable about Greek Myth, so her lectures are always interesting. The creative projects were kind of difficult, so make sure not to procrastinate on those and you will be fine. I also really liked her method of grading.
Prof Morales is super funny and kind, clearly cares about her students. In the beginning of the class, you know what grade youre gonna receive based on the work you do. Reading was sometimes a bit much, like the Iliad, but its very doable. No papers, just an optional project if you want an A/B. Strongly recommend!
I absolutely love Professor Morales. She is so funny and such a great storyteller. Lectures are not mandatory, but you will want to go to them. She made my day better every time. I'm genuinely sad that I won't be going back to this class again. Grading is super clear, the syllabus tells you exactly what you need to do to pass. So worth the GE.
Prof Morales is the absolute best! If you want an A, you have to write 2 papers. It would be a realllllly easy class to take pass/no pass though. She very clearly lays out what you need to do to get the grade you want! Lectures not technically mandatory but sections are.
Morales is a fun professor that loves what she teaches and makes lectures fun! The course is an easy A if you do the work. There are weekly writing assignments and you have to do two projects to receive an A (graded on completion).
Fun prof and super easy class. If you do the assignments you will get an A. No tests.
Super easy stress free class. The only thing you need to do to pass is participate in sections and do the weekly assignments; requires an hour or two a week. To get an A, you'll need to do two writing assignments, which aren't too bad, just requires some extra work. They're graded based on completion, and the TAs give good feedback.
Professor Morales will be a professor I remember for a while. She is very passionate about what she does and this translates to her lectures. Fall 2021 had the class online but I felt I got a high quality of education nonetheless. There was a lot of writing, so be prepared.
She is very kind and funny, but if you are looking to really learn greek myth and don't think this class is it. There aren't any tests or final which is a plus, but it doesn't hold people accountable so I felt no one knew anything, at least I felt I didn't learn much. You pretty much get to pick your grade based on how much work you want to put in.
I took CLASS40 in Fall 2021 online. The grading policy was clear and assignments were graded more on if you followed the directions than did anything special. I followed all the guidelines (max of 2-3 hours a week). Plus, if you manage to write more than 1600 words for your final projects you can apply for a writing credit in L&S.
If you want an easy GE, take this, pass/no pass. Just attend 7/10 sections, and about 70% of the weekly writing assignments (basically 2 per week) for a pass grade. Writing assignments are generally graded easily, credit/no credit. Just make sure to set weekly reminders to do the work, cause a lot of times I forgot to do them, so I cut it close.
the only challenging part of this class is the two projects that really bite you in the butt if you procrastinate on them. start early on them so you do not stress during finals week! otherwise, morales seems cool, I did not attend any person lectures with her though. TA was great, really passionate about his stuff.
Great professor and TA!
Lots of reading but you don't need to do most of it
the project(s) are kind of a lot of work, but if you pace yourself it isnt that bad. the weekly work assignments arent too bad either and you can miss a few! the material itself is really easy, especially if you like greek myth already (percy jackson fans?). julio is an amazing TA as well!
Easy GE. Clear & easy grading. 2 weekly 200WC writing for completion, attend 7/10 sections, complete 1 1600WC project/paper for a passing grade or 2 for an A. I mostly BS'd all assignments with just some Percy Jackson knowledge and Wikipedia. Just make sure to focus on writing analysis. Never needed to attend lecture or do the readings. (Fall 2021)
Prof. was hilarious & overall a good teacher. Which is kinda hard to find nowadays. Clear on what work you need to do to get an A, B, C etc. which takes the stress away. The class taught by her & the TA made me love greek myth.
Arguably the easiest class at this school, with Helen at least. Pretty interesting as well.
This class is known to be easy, the rumors are true. 2 Projects that are not very difficult, showing up to section, doing short quizzes, and writing assignments get you an A. Easy GE.
Prof Morales was an incredibly fun and caring teacher. Attendance/readings are not mandatory to do well, and her grading criteria is very clear. She is extremely funny, and I often attended lecture just to listen to her talk.
She can be petty sometimes but she's super funny and Greek myth is an easy GE. Pretty interesting class too.
Does not care about you as a person. Rude, and almost downright condescending. As long as you do your work and keep to yourself you will be fine. This is honestly quite an easy class. However, knowing her personality, I can't recommend it in good conscience.
Professor Morales is so passionate for Greek myth. She was so funny and I loved listening to her in lecture. There was a lot of reading for the class but you can get by without doing most of it. I actually really enjoyed the reading from the books that she wrote. Her grading expectations are clear in the syllabus. It is easy to get an A
Morales is super passionate about the topic, but the lectures aren't required and very skippable. She uses her own material for the class which is kind of funny. Super easily graded, just a few assignments that you can do half effort and it is very clear what to do in order to get a good grade.
Super easy & interesting class. Took it first quarter of my freshman year and I couldn't have asked for a better GE. The grading is very clear (do a certain number of assignments to receive a certain grade) and all the quizzes are online asynchronous. If you're a Percy Jackson fan this class will be a breeze
I loved this class! It's very clear in the syllabus what you need to do in order to get the grade you want. You lowkey do not need to do the readings or attend any lectures in order to succeed. I went to lecture anyway because Prof. Morales is so funny and makes it interesting. Amazing accent.
I loved Morales! Her class was so interesting and her lectures are so organized that it's hard NOT to absorb the information. There were assigned readings, but I got away with not doing them. She's also VERY CLEAR about what she expects which is so refreshing. Love her and I highly recommend this class. It builds good character development.
Genuinely one of the easiest GEs I've ever taken. I did none of the readings and I still got an A+. The TAs are super sweet and very lenient graders. There were weekly writing posts that were like around 250-300 words. Weekly quizzes, but also super easy as long as you attend lectures.
An interesting course and a professor who updates the lectures to be relevant. Would recommend! There's weekly canvas quizzes and two "creative projects" are required for an A (and WRT requirement). There's readings, but you can probably skim or skip some of them.
Really enjoyed this class. Professor Morales is a great lecturer and very passionate about Greek myths. Only had to attend 7 sections which was great. One of the books we had to read was the Iliad which I ended up loving. No final exam instead just a straight forward final project.
Great teacher. Keeps class interesting and explains the stories in an engaging way.
Super light class, probably top 3 easiest GE with Hellen. She lowk a yapper but her class is light asf so it checks out.
Nice professor. Uses specs grading which makes it an easy GE. Attendance is important, especially for section because of the grading system (cannot miss more than one and receive an A without it being excused). Overall the workload is light and quizzes are mainly based on the lectures (rather than reading). Entertaining content.
She is really great to listen to in Lecture and they are never boring. No final, just an option of a paper for a project or taking a picture with up to 800 words about a Greek myth.
Great professor, class was very easy, just a bunch of readings but they aren't exactly mandatory.
Good GE course. Easy to A, moderate workload.
Lovely class definitely take her if you are thinking about it.
Great class, would take this class again in a heartbeat. She's very passionate about what she teaches. Assignments are relatively easy. Take!!!!
I HIGHLY recommend this class as an easy and interesting gen ed. Helen Morales gives funny and engaging lectures. It is extremely clear what you need to do to get each letter grade, and it's basically impossible not to get the grade you want because assignments are only graded on completion. She does do random in-lecture responses once a week.
It was a very good GE. I feel like Greek Myth is a topic everyone wants to learn about but never got the chance to, and here that chance is. She does her best to make the textbooks accessible/cheap (you can get by without them tho). She is very knowledgeable in the subject but can sometimes get crabby during lecture bc of chatter.
