good teacher, but she is tough to get an A
helpful, makes time to explain things clearly. is a bit hard but its worth it
very helpful. helps you become a better writer.
Her course is only worth 100 points which means your chance of getting an A is close to impossible! Plus you have to have community hours 3.
if you work hard you will get an A...one of the best teachers ive had
So helpful. easy to talk to.
awesome teacher...can't say enough good things about her. she made sure she tapped all of the students' different talents; ranks up there as on of my favorite profs.
I don't think she knows what she wants. She tells you how to change it to make the writing more effective than when grading she marks you down for the changes she recommended you make.
If you come to class, do the reading and take notes you will pass. Always ask for help on any paper she assigns.
I had a straight A average including 300 and 400 level classes then I took her 200 level class. I worked harder than any class I have ever had and got a B. Her samples of her work she presented was bad so I question her ability as a writer.
I got an A because she is an excellent teacher. If you do what is expected of you, an A will be rewarded. one of my favorites
Why is her class worth 100pts. Where is the partial credit.
If you're into creative writing, I HIGHLY reccommend Helen. She has somewhat demanding expectations, but she really has great input for creative writing skills.

There aren't enough points in the class.
if you think you're good at english think again before taking this nuts class! not only was she very unhelpful but she is nowhere near to being qualified to work at svsu! she is an EXTREMELY unfair teacher!
Very high expectations. Not a class for slackers. Tests are challanging. She is very knowlageable about her subject. She is very approachable. If dont understand something ASK. Its not an easy A, but a decent grade is not impossible.
she had very high expectations of her students and if you take her course be ready to do a lot of work. she is very clear about what she wants included in your papers though, and she will not hesitate to help you if you need it
I LOVED her! true, the point system was harsh, but she didn't not assign a lot of work, and if you followed directions, you did well. I got an A. i thought her class was great, and her assignments were interesting and fun to do.
She is a very nice person, but her class is difficult and she expects ALOT from freshman students!
Helen is extremely helpful. This was the best English class ever!
Helen wants precision work but is available to assist you if something is not understood. However, if your writing needs some shaping up take her class, it will help. Sometimes maybe a little to picky.
I hated this class. The quizes from the readings are very annoying and the papers are very hard to get a good grade in. The teachers wasn't bad but it was the class.
She is an excellent teacher, one of my very favorites of all time. She knows her stuff and makes class interesting and fun. Everyone who complains about her being too hard is either very lazy or very incompetent. Do the work, don't slack, and your golden!
The class was hard, but I learned alot from Helen. 212 is not a blow off class with her you actually need to work.
She is always willing to clarify,if u don't understand something. She expects to much right off the bat. She doesn't give extra credit. She isn't willing to work with you either. She chews your papers and assignments apart. She is also an unfair grader.
Pretty easy teacher and most definitely looking good for her age. A fair grader, but an interesting class filled with good discussions.
I love the in-class discussions because the whole class got into it. The journals were a bit of a pain, but thats expected in English. Very tough grader, she can spot a last minute paper from a mile away. Good teacher overall though.
She expects way too much out of her students. You have to even volunteer at a non profit agency for four hours on your own time. The papers weren't that hard, but she is a picky grader. If you don't like a lot of work, I would avoid this class.
She will help you if you ask her, which I recommend you do if you take her. Homework and papers very time consuming and she is a very tough grader. There is so much work involved in this class, so no room for laziness.
This is my second time taking her, and i like her a lot! she's a good teacher, very enthusiastic, she IS a tough grader, but if you're a hard worker, it pays off. HATE the journals though. they're a pain. other than that, she's a great teacher.
How much more anal can we get?
Helen is an awesome professor. She's always willing to exlpain more thoroughly and help on the side. She isn't the easiest professor, but if you work at it, you won't have a problem. Great input for anyone who wants to be a writer.
She's one I'm never taking again
She expects a lot out of you. She does not give any slack but she is a fun teacher. If you really like English she would be a good teacher for you. She takes her job very seriously maybe to serious.
Very challenging class and teacher. She is a very hard grader, and its a struggle to get good grades. Do things exactly as she wants them done. Do not put off stuff at the last minute!
I was an english major...until Helen. Absolutely hated this class. Half the class DROPPED OUT! I think that speaks for it's self
She is a tough teacher, but I think that it is due to the fact that she really wants her students to learn! Tough grader, just go the extra mile. She is truley a great professor, she will definently help you with any problems or questions you have. I would definently take her again!
Her class may seem tough but all you need to do is pay close attention in class. She will give you everything you need to exceede during lecture. if that doesn't work for you, she is very helpful outside of class.
Hard class. Don't miss any classes or you will miss alot. Read everything twice or you will not understand what is being discussed. Good teacher, but you will really have to work for this one.
She is the teacher to take if you want to learn. She is tough but it is this quality that makes all of the work worth it. If given the chance, I would certainly take her again.
classes like this are the reason why i am no longer an english major. she's a great person and the class was interesting, but man.... too hard. tough grader and too much to do in one semester. who has that kind of time to dedicate to ONE class? not i.
Helen is very fun, and straight to the point. She helped me alot, and the topics are quite interesting. Just make sure you do your work, and turn it in on time. If you do your work, and go to class, it should be a breeze
As far as english classes go, this one is going badly. the word of the day is: "group work" and a lot of it. The lady seems interested with the subjects on the surface, but deep down I believe her to be just going through the motions. Class discussions are just superfluous and provide little more insight than the discussed author's introduction.
I learned so much in this class. She challenges us to think. It is too bad that the whiners and slackers don't get it. Perhaps they should go back to middle school. She rocks!
This was one of the most worthwhile classes I have taken in awhile. Helen challenges her students, though, if you're not willing to work and think this is not the class for you. Workload is not light, but isn't overwhelming. Class discussion was interesting, insightful, and helpful. Not too many teachers earn your respect, but she does.
Best prof I have had in a long time. Makes the class interesting and leads great discussions. There is a fair amount of work, but it is not overwhelming. She knows when you are slacking or BSing and it will show in your grade!! If you are not a slacker you will do fine, and you won't regret taking Helen!
I'm surprised by all the good ratings. I heard a lot of complaints in my class. She was a nice lady but her tests were tough and the work was overwhelming. I definately don't recommend it for anyone who isn't an english major.
As others I heard that she was hard, and she was-if you didn't pay attention. Grades hard. Class discussions were great and I learned a lot. Very knowledgeable woman and would like to take her again.
Helen is an awesome professor. She challenges her students to think and discuss relevant issues regarding literature. It is a fun and interesting class, but the workload is not light. You won't be bored!

Helen makes you work for your grade. She grades tough but it's well worth it in the end. People who want an easy A should not take this class and she will tell you that the first day of the semester. So if you want an easy A and continue with her class, don't complain about her in the end because it's your own fault for being lazy.
She's a good Prof at SVSU. You learn a great deal in her class, although its not hard at all its very VERY time consuming. If your willing to put in the work you will be rewarded. There are four novels you have to read in her class.
This class was not all that hard, but you do spend a lot of time on your h/w. It was a fun class and I enjoyed going to class. Tons of work, but if you put in the time you will get what you want out of it.
Well, she's not really that great. I was personally bothered by her abundance of group work and the largesse of assignments handed out to little effect. She's made people really dislike the field of English Literature and she may well do the same to you.
she's helpful
Make sure to attend class because there is alot of inclass work done, and you dont get it if you arent in clas. She is a real hard grader, and you cant read her writing for the comments on the papers she gives back. Shes a little wack, but shes a nice lady. I dont recommend the class if you do not have time to do all the reading and assignments.
Helen is a great prof. contrary to what people are saying. She actually makes you learn!!!!!! If you want to spend a ton of money on college and not learn a thing, don't take her class. You work hard for your grade but whatever you get, you deserve. She tells great stories and allows you to tell yours and is very funny.
Mrs. Raica-Klotz is a very nice lady. She's probably my favorite prof this year. Her interaction with students is tremendous and her teaching methods enable students to think outside of the box concerning the reading material. Time consuming-but manageable. If your willing to do the work, take this class.-RTY
She is one of the worst professors at SVSU and a poor English teacher. When you talk with her and she gives you suggestions, if you change your paper to reflect her ideas, she marks you down later for her suggestions. I am a A student and most often if I don't care for a professor, I can at least say they know their stuff but not with Helen.
This is my hardest class this year. She is a very hard grader, and its hard to read the notes she gives back on your papers.
She is a very good instructor. If you read the material and really think about it (analyze it) you'll do fine. She can tell right away if you are BS'ing so don't even try it.
Not an easy class, but definitely worth the effort. I went back and re-read my essays from last year and compared them and noticed a tremendous change after I had her. She is engaging and very knowledgeable and fun to talk to outside of class even. Her handwriting is rather poor though >.>...but question it and she is more than willing to explain.
She is a very good teacher. I liked her a lot. Everyone is right, her class does require a lot of outside reading, but the novels she assigns are very interesting, and are not hard to read. I would definitely recommend her!
Very good teacher; but a very hard class. If you keep up your reading though, and go to all of the extra credit then you will do fine. She is very funny and smart, so class is not boring at all. :]
NOT RECCOMENDED. Nothing is actually taught in this class. You just read 80 to 100 pages of nonsense for each class, then go in and talk about how SHE views it. I am leaving this class with no more knowledge of the subject than when I entered it. You may think I'm mad about doing poorly, but I actually did ok, I'm just angry I payed for nothing.
Class was fun. If you do the work, you'll get a good grade. The 4 books we had to read were interesting. There were small group book discussions, and then each group explains their answer to the study questions. She also gave extra credit, and is straight forward about what she wants.
she basically told me from the begining that she was not going to pass me. i wouldnt take her ever. favoratism towards students. drop now
After I got the hang of it, I enjoyed the class. Readings and journals required for nearly every day of class but it's not too bad. The exams are pretty tough, but she will help you and discuss anything. If you play attention enough in class she will give you a few things that help as well.
I would recommend her! I liked the in class communication we had in class. Just know that this is NOT a blow off class. She expects a lot out of you! The exams are rough and you will have to work very hard to get an A. But Helen is a great teacher and is willing to help you, anyway she can.
This has been my favorite class thus far. She's a difficult professor in that there's a lot of work, and she grades pretty tough, but she's passionate about what she's teaching and she always keeps it interesting. Work hard and you can get a B. If you want a class where you can skate by without much effort, look somewhere else.
Funny and makes class interesting. If you do the work, you'll do fine.
She expects you to do what you should do in college, work. The exams are lengthy, but manageable. And having very little homework between exams makes it even nicer. She is a tough grader, but she grades true to the rules (C is an average grade). I'd be willing to take any class taught by her. She's a really good professor.
Helen's classes are very interesting and fun. She does expect you to do the work and do it well. Paying attention and being responsive in class is very important. NOT a class you can just blow-off.
She's very nice and funny! Don't take this class if you don't like reading or writing. You have reading assignments between each class and a journal due each class period. Her work is generally easy, however it's very tedious. Don't take this class if you plan on skipping a lot because you have something due or a quiz in class everyday.
This is a great English professor. She's very encouraging and creative. Highly recommend this professor.
Helen is a pretty funny lady, but I hate how she grades. This class focuses on reading and writing, but she expects you to be amazing. I did my best work on my first exam (which is supposed to be the easiest of all) and I only got a C. Disappointed in this class.
Helen is the best teacher I've every had. she really makes you think and work outside the box. i love writing so the class was fairly easy to me i got a B in the class although i didnt see my grade go up until toward the end i had an D that after the final project i got a B. You have to read 5 thick books. every week journals quiz's group work due
Great teacher!
Helen is one of the best professors you can take at SVSU. Expect to read +/- 100 pages per class period for homework on the books you are covering. Quizzes on the material per every class period. Her lectures and personality are great. Make taking the difficult course worth it.
I only had Dr. Racia-Klotz for half of the semester but it was pretty horrible and I wouldn't take her again. She wasn't the nicest to students and wasn't very approachable. The class didn't make a lot of sense and it was hard to see the purpose behind each assignment.
I would not recommend choosing Helen as your professor. She assigns work as if you do not have other classes to focus on. She is a nice woman but my semester was very stressful because of her. A lot of work but so little time. Be mindful that she does not accept any late work so make sure you are on top of your assignments if you do have her.
Helen is amazing. She expects a lot on her assignments but if you go to office hours or email her she is very helpful in making sure you understand the material. She is such a sweetheart. If you don't like reading or discussing the books in class. DO not take her! She picks amazing books to read. I will take Helen again.
Helen is amazing at what she does. Shes a nice lady but beware of her essays. She grades very hard on them. There are 2 essays and they are worth 200 points each. Along with a final project which is your final. Journals and books are easy along with quizzes. Beware of essays. Dont take this class if you dont like deep reading and understanding.
Helen is the hardest grader I have EVER had. Her directions are always unclear for what she is looking for and she will not help you. Be ready to read 100 pages every two days. Overall a nice girl but the way she teaches is way too much just for a gen ed. Save yourself and take this class with a different professor.
Get ready to read a ton of novels. Its not like high school, you have to read to pass this class. You read about 200 pages a week and have to write a summary for every reading section. If she thinks you didn't read it, she will simple give you a zero. I did not like her at first but she's actually pretty nice. Only 2 papers and a easy final project
Helen was amazing. Her books were amazing reads. She really knows her stuff about refugees, and about what you're reading. Her books are easy reads. Her responses are every week on what you're reading. Easy 20 points. The essays are tough worth 200 points each. Meet during her office hours. Project at the end. easy 200 points.
A lot of the refugee content in this class was interesting, but I would not take it again. There was a lot of reading(125-175 pages a week) and time-consuming work associated with the books we read.
We were assigned 8 books to read the entire semester and she expects us to read over 100 pages a week, personally I do not have time for that. She is very picky on the way that she grades and it is very unclear what she really wants to be included. I read through all of the directions and do my paper accordningly, ending with a 75/200 for a grade.
This teacher is very caring and thoughtful. Each class was fun. Be prepared to write a few papers.
The teacher is a very tough grader on all the assignments and get ready to read a lot of books.
Helen was my favorite professor at SVSU. You can tell she truly cares about her students. The class setup was very convenient and she explained the assigned papers very well. Lots of in class participation made the class fun to attend. You will have to do a bit of reading and online quizzes which were honestly a little tough. Overall great class.
I didn't like this class and she was a tough grader. I didn't learn well in this environment
pretty solid
Great professor! She is the most caring professor I have ever had here so far. Lots of reading but I felt I have learned so much from the course. participation greatly matters but it is fairly easy to get involved in the conversation within class. I would 100000% have her as a professor again!
Be aware of how strict this class is. She knows her stuff, but getting even a C is pretty tough
Please do not take eng111 with her, overall she is a very nice person, but not a great teacher. There are quizzes on the textbook every week, and you cannot make these up if you miss one. She is also a very picky grader, and classes are incredibly boring. Take this class with literally any other professor.
