Great prof. Interesting, clear, passionate lectures. Good at fostering and maintaining class discussions. Interested in students.
passionate, intelligent, respectful, and will challenge you to think critically. You leave the course understanding that Women's Studies is not a bird course, but a real interdisciplinary field. A very worthwhile course.
Very professional, extremely helpful sincere. I thoroughly enjoy coming to class and leave the class with a true self-motivation to strive higher.
Professor Ramirez is the best damn professor at Wilfred Laurier University, nobody even comes close.
best teacher by far at the university! The whole class is always sooo intentive! She is absolutely the best prof I have ever had! keep up the awesome work!
she's nothing short of incredible. always has your best interests at heart. a well-versed and committed feminist who will challenge you but never condescend like so many others. she makes me want to take this class over and over again cuz i would probably still learn something new each time over. an absolute treasure in the small ws dept.
she is the msot genuine person I have ever met. She knows her stuff, and always adds her personal touch to every lecture!
she doesn't even care about appearance! shes genuine! i haven't learned as much in all my other classes combined as i have from her in only 4 weeks of classes! i'm changing my major to women's studies because i think she is so brilliant and really committed to what she does! shes passionate about her class, so it makes me passionate as well!
Best prof!! She is really nice and helpful too. If you email her because you are having problems on an assignment, she write long emails back with helpful advice and even gives out extensions when you don't have a very good excuse. She is passionate about Women's Studies. It was my favourite class for sure.
She is AMAZING! She makes you think, and gets you energetic about women's studies. I've never been so inspired! You really have to take her class. She is open, honest, caring, and she will contribute to not only your acedemic, but your own personal development too. And, the written assignments, so interesting, the words just flow out (I hate writin
I just loved this class. Dr. Ramirez is so passionate about what she does and she lives what she teaches. She keeps the class interesting by using exapmles she has encountered in her own life.

Can be hard to take notes in WS204 with her cuz she moves so fluidly from topic to topic drawing connections. Can be hard to tell where she's beginning and where she's ending only cuz there's no single beginning or end in a capitalist patriarchy. Best strategy in her lectures is to sit back, listen and absorb because she will not fail to intrigue.
She is such a great lecturer. She knows the material so well, and really makes the course interesting. Lectures aren't really that mandatory, but they are so valuable to attend, as she is so engaging. Extremely helpful, and the material is interesting. Very valuable prof at WLU.
She was a very nice prof like others have said, but I don't think that is too important. I found that instead of TEACHING us during lecture, she was trying to CONVINCE us that women are oppressed, or convince us that we should continue taking Women's Studies.
A really great teacher...she loves what she does...uses great examples...really cares about her students...not hard and not too easy! Loved her class last year...have her again this year!! Can't wait!
Dr Ramirez is one of the most amazing women I have ever met. I love her classes so much. I even took one whose subject matter was not so interesting to me, just because she was teaching it. She loves what she does, cares about students, and always has something important to say. I look up to her as a feminist and as a student. Take a class by her.
Dr. Ramirez is absolutely AMAZING! She shows genuine interest in her students and their success in her class. This is the 4th time I have had her, and her classes are a MUST TAKE!!!
Very nice and helpful, however she turned me away from women's studies. It was an interesting class, but in her view EVERYTHING oppresses women and it sometimes seems like she wants all the students to have the same idea.
Wonderful woman, very kind, very passionate about what she teaches.. her lectures were interesting but lacked organization/flow. WAYYY TOO MUCH WORK - THREE papers, reading from the text book, articles, AND a 400 pg NOVEL to read
AWESOME! Such a compassionate teacher! She really loves what she does and what she teaches which makes for a great course! If you need help she drops anything to help you! So nice!
Professor Ramirez was an absolute delight as a person but she lacked focus during lecture. I found it difficult to take notes. I also agree that the course load was a bit much - 3 out of class meetings with IA'S, not to mention the number of readings and assignments. As a first year, I felt a bit overwhelmed with the amount of work.
Some profs can pull off the "lecture without a direction" style - Dr. Ramirez can not. Her lectures lack specifics and taught me very little about Women's Studies. It seemed that she was trying to just "sell" the discipline to me in her classes. And two textbooks, two papers AND a novel to read for a first year class? Please.
Helen is an amazing prof! She is soo passionate about womens studies and her students. She makes the ws100 course really interesting by telling lots of life stories and realting them to course material. She has really interesting assignments and grades midterms/exams very fairly! If your going to take a Womens studies course take one with her!
very nice, gives many ways to get the good grade.
LOVE HER with all my heart...inspired me to become a double major in women's studies....very quirky but wouldnt have it any other way! Great experience
Dr. Ramirez is an amazing woman, she is passionate, knowledgeable and wonderful to listen to. I found her lecture style difficult to follow due to its lack of structure. I also found that the readings she assigned she did not discuss in class, which gave no motivation to actually do the reading.
Very passionate & loves what she teaches but is sometimes a little over the top. She sometimes seems to have a bit of a god complex and takes a long time to mark everything. Her classes are interesting and she is very knowledgable but her classes lack structure making it hard to take notes. The exams are mostly essays so this isnt completly bad.
She's passionate and knowledgeable in her field, but it's crazy trying to take notes in her lectures cuz she goes off on tangents a lot. It takes forever to mark stuff so we go into exams not knowing where we are at. Essay question & short answers are norms for exams and it's really hard to gauge how you got marks. Talk to her a lot for high marks.
dr. ramirez is great. she really cares about what she does, & is incredibly convincing. her classes are interesting, & ultimately, just important.
Lectures were extremely hard to follow making my motivation to go to class very low. The work load was also much more than I expected. There is a lot of "mandatory" reading that never gets discussed, plus a novel which I don't remember talking about. However, she's very passionate about what she is talking about which is great.
Really good prof, assignments mainly take-home based. Expects a lot from students, it's hard to get an A, but easy to get a B.
She is an amazing prof! I would recommend any class she teaches! This is my last year at Laurier and she has made an impact of my life in a huge way. I would even call her a role model.
best prof ever!! my fav prof at this school hands down
She's very condescending. Fine for beginners to gender politics, but has a very narrow teaching scope & is quite rude sometimes.
She is very narrow minded to how she teaches her subject, and does not seem to respect other peoples opinions. She does not motivate me to go to class and it is my least favourite to attend. I would not tell anyone to ever take this class.
Very passionate woman. Though I only had her for one subject she definatly inspired me. She expected a lot from her students and was not afraid to touch on the topics that make people uncomfortable. Great prof!
The best professor at Laurier.
There was no final exam, but the class material was very interesting and useful for assignments - as well as group discussion. She is very approachable and helpful with assignments.
She is condescending and can be incredibly rude. Her voice puts me to sleep in lectures. I find it difficult to find motivation to go to class because I learn nothing in the lectures. I wouldn't recommend this class to anyone EVER
I am currently taking one of her classes at UW and she is nice enough, but is completely useless. The syllabus is very vague and even when asked for clarification I get an equally vague answer back. So you have no idea what she is asking of you in the written work.
She is terrible at staying on task and does not follow the syllabus. She does lengthy and unclear lectures that are impossible to follow and take notes on. She is extremely opinionated and very condescending towards the students in her class.
Very rude, opinionated and condesending. Her lectures are completely random and impossible to take notes on. The syllabus is irrelevant as well as the books- they are still unopened. Extremely boring
The trick about this prof is having your own ideas and sharing these views with her. I found that once you were able to share your opinion Helen's sense of humor came out. She doesn't sugar coat anything so if you don't have tough skin or you're too sensitive you may not enjoy the class. She's great!
Not a good prof at all. The lectures were very unclear and unorganized - often seemed like there was no point to them. Very opinionated and condescending. Not helpful at all.
This teacher is very opinionated and condescending towards her students. If your writing an essay for her, you should just argue a point that she will agree with rather than your own views. Also the lectures are useless. She is inconsistent and all over the place making note taking difficult. I would recommend not taking this class.
EXTREMELY boring/bland lecture but easy marker. You have to write 3 essays for her, as long as you argue that women were mistreated and put some effort you'll receive a good mark. It is a BIRDCOURSE. She also takes essays late with minimal penalty. She also marks participation w/ the last few lectures but does so very leniently. Take as a bird
I love this teacher, she has the voice of an angel in lecture, I love to listen to her talk. Although she can get VERY off topic she can have some very eye opening things to teach you. She is very understanding about handing in late assignments. Go visit her office hours, she is great to talk to!
she was the worst prof i have ever had, she did not use any technology, was way to quiet, her lectures had no concept to them, they were just random facts and the exam....... you have to write 2 full essays in 2 hours, which is the stupidest thing ever especially when she doesn't let you take notes. DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS WITH THIS PROF.
Very off topic with her lectures, impossible to write notes. There is little to no structure with her lectures AT ALL. The exam was online and you had to write 2 essays with barely any notes.
Took WS204 online last semester. Hard work not recognized. Too opinionated. Chats are interesting enough. She seems nice with her high pitched voice. Unfair + hard marker though. Would not recommend unless you want to major in WS or can agree with everything she says, and think in her ways exactly. Unfair
Nice. Hard marker. High expectations. Lazy. Slow responses to emails, if any
Love her so much
Ramirez is a hard marker but is an amazing prof who truly cares about what she is teaching. While there are no tests or midterms, only one online exam, there are three papers throughout the course. Ramirez's hard marking challenges your writing skills that will benefit you in the future. Take the course due to interest not for a bird course.
I liked Professor Ramirez, lectures were interesting although I felt she repeated a lot of things. She is passionate and that's exactly what you want while taking a women studies class. She does not man-hate which is something you definitely don't want while taking a women studies class. Ramirez is inspirational, lots of great life stories.
Amazing professor. Extremely inspirational and driven. Her lectures get a little off topic at times and boring but her intense lectures make up for this.
She was very unclear with what she wanted in all of the essays assigned. Tough marker and there was absolutely no structure to her lectures. If you have the choice of a different prof for this class, pick the other one.
Her lectures are not structured at all and she talks about random events that is not related to the textbook at all. She's very vague about what she wants you to do for essays/papers so you have to kind of guess what to do and hope its okay.
You can skip the classes because she literally just rambles about her life and experiences, she have never mentioned ANYTHING in the assigned readings and is SUPER vague about the assignments. I went to 90% of the classes, especially the ones before the assignments are due and all she says about them are the 3 sentences on the syllabus.
She rants about literally nothing that is relevant to the course, she tries to take her personal life and rant about it in a loose relation to the course material.
Lectures are very unorganized, no slides and hard to take notes. Papers have very unclear instructions and when asking for help she does not clearly answer what you have asked. Very tough marker.
Extremely unclear about expectations for assignments, then when you ask her why you received the grade you did she is rude and essentially tells you that you should have magically known what she wanted you to do. Almost an unfair marker. Doesn't cover any theory in class but expects you to talk about it in your essays. Don't take a class with her.
Dr. Ramirez's lectures were very unorganized and she never followed the syllabus once for them. I found she would just talk about nothing for the whole class and you would be left not knowing what to write in your notes because she didn't use powerpoint or anything. Her assignments were also very unclear but she expected a lot from them.
This is probably the worst course I've ever taken. Her lectures are a disaster and it's impossible to take notes. She is an extremely hard marker with little to no feedback. You have to write 3 papers with virtually no instructions and are expected to do well. Although she seems like a sweet lady, she should not be a professor.
There are no tests but there are a lot of essays and reflections you have to write. Sometimes she's quiet when she speaks. Overall decent class.
Dr. Ramirez provide little structure in her lectures and does not provide useful information for what she expects for assignments. Her classes are very long and boring and she uses no technology. I was hoping to learn something from her class but her lectures had no structure or set topics. Not even sure she reads your essays.
Going to class is an easy 5 %, which does matter because she marks hard for assignments
I took this same course with another professor and failed. Took it with Ramirez and got an A-! I don't just attribute this to her being an easy grader though. She is actually very helpful and a great teacher. If you're having trouble with anything she's incredibly supportive and will help you get to where you need to be.
Helen is by far one of the kindest souls I have ever met at Laurier. That being said she is an incredibly difficult marker with vague, unattainable expectations.
Needs to be more specific of what she is expecting on assignments and provide a rubric for students to follow
She uses no technology. I struggled to take notes because all she did was rant. Clearly not a feminist because all she does is discriminate against men. Her marking criteria was absolutely nuts and she gave NO insight on how she wanted the 3 papers you submit written. When you ask a question, you leave more confused. Nice lady though.
Her lectures are essentially just her going off on tangents about whatever she feels, there is no connection between the weekly readings and her lecture content. Lectures are interesting but she just talks about whatever she feels; never uses slides or white board so there is no info on where she is getting her content? basically just a crazy nut
Helen Ramirez is definitely something else. She's super passionate but also easy to disagree with. DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS IF YOU CANT ACCEPT OTHER PEOPLES OPINIONS. Take the time to go to her office hours and talk to her about what interests you (especially on paper topics) she will put you in the right direction and give you lots of material!!
Passionate, well-spoken and inspirational. One of the best profs I've ever had! Her lectures are thought-provoking and engaging. Assignments came easily since I found the course content very interesting.
Would not recommend taking a class with her. She just rambles on all class, has no structure, no slides, no whiteboard use, and her syllabus is no where near what she rants about. She should be talking about important issues in society, instead she talks about her personal life and whatever she feels like. This class was a waste of my time.
Helen gave absolutely no feedback. She was a tough grader with specific expectations yet did not provide the specific guidelines or requirements. Her lectures lack structure. She does not follow her syllabus. She rambles on about nothing to do with the course topic. I would recommend to stay away.
Dr. Ramirez has opened my eyes on the topics that we have discussed in class and has made Women and Gender Studies very enjoyable for me! I will definitely be taking more of her classes in the future
She is the worst instructor I have ever had. she shows up and talks on tangents for 1.5 hours. she doesn't use slides or has notes. She doesn't use MLS and speaks quietly and doesn't care that students in the back cant hear her. she doesn't provide clear expectations for assignments and overall I suffer through this lecture twice a week.
The worst class ever. There is absolutely no structure for this class. Ramirez gives no instruction or feedback but expects you to do well. The lectures are awful. She uses no slides or powerpoint and rambles on about absolutely nothing. The lectures also don't correspond with the terrible text we have to read. DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS!!!
Lectures never followed the required readings, Ramirez was never on topic. She lacked guidance for assignments and was unclear when it came to grading and requirements. Exam was tough, the essay topics were about the readings which we never discussed in class. Easy marker and open to many ideas for paper making it an easy A. Not a heavy course load
Absolutely incredible professor. She has opened my eyes and brought so many issues to the forefront. The topics discussed in class are tough, but well worth listening to. You will learn A LOT if you take this class. She is incredibly inspirational, and willing to help students in any way she can. Amazing lectures, thought provoking classes. Love!
Helen Ramirez does not use powerpoint or any visual aid while lecturing. She has no planned outline for each lecture, she just sits on her desk and talks about her life and stories she has heard. Godlike taking meaningful notes when the teaching style is not teaching. Helen made me hate this course.
The prof does not say "refer to the syllabus" since it does not provide any clear instructions yet does not clarify in class either. I originally attended class for the 5% attendance but gave up halfway through because the lectures are 3 hours long and unrelated to the tested material.
Thinking about taking WS100 as a "bird course"? Don't. 3 hour lectures where Ramirez talks (no PPTS) about topics not related to the final exam. She also talks very quietly; hard to hear/ understand her. 2 essays (have to read books), one group written project + discussion with her, and one final essay all worth a lot and she's a hard marker.
She was not specific in what she wanted for essays and her feedback was only ever a sentence long. You don't need to go to class to get a good mark. She is pretty boring to listen to as all she does is lecture with zero slides
Dr. Ramirez makes me dread going to class to be honest. From her extremely quiet voice that causes me to doze off during class, to her completely irrelevent topics of discussion. I only go to class in case any important info is covered (which we haven't really), since she does not post any slides online, let alone during class. Would not recommend.
She does not project her voice whatsoever. Probably the quietest and most uninteresting lectures i've ever been in. Her voice puts me to sleep and she uses no visual aids to help with note taking. No powerpoints. Speaks Quietly. Makes me hate coming to class becuse no slides are posted online and I have to come if I want any idea of key topics.
Did not enjoy lectures with this professor what so ever. She spent an hour and 20 minutes every lecture talking about whatever popped into her head, no structure what so ever. Gives very vague instructions for papers and group projects. Gives very unclear feedback on paper. Heard she was an "easy marker" and I can assure you she is not.
Calls her lectures rants and speaks on no serious feminist issues. Hates men. Gives bad marks and no feedback. Group project where you had to go to her moms house and talk to her mom and neighbour. Complete wack job. Don't go to class, 5% participation not worth it. Nothing she says is needed for essays, just research the topic.
Very unclear about what is expected.
Speaks about her own experiences too much and is hard to follow as she talks about many different things at the same time. WS100 is not a bird course as Ramirez marks hard, and the feedback she gives is very vague and confusing.
Ramirez does nothing but speak about her own personal made-up experiences all lecture every lecture, she does not prepare you for the final examination at all, and everything is based on books that are mind-numbing. She also provides no feedback on how to improve grades moving forward and gives most people B's throughout the semester. 0 Stars.
Helen is passionate and enthusiastic. She is also opinionated, and any dissent from her point of view or the established narrative will not be accepted. She is however, very caring and also willing to lend an ear to any problems you might have.
Helen is a very passionate professor. She goes on and on every lecture about nonsense that is repetitive. This course will not boost your GPA unless you are a strong passionate writer that has the same beliefs in gender rights as Helen. The whole course is vague: feedback, assignment outlines, etc. Not a good prof, could've been a good course.
Ramirez was an amazing prof. I actually took a class next semester a year up so I could have her again.
The worst educator I have ever had. Lectures are unstructured, she made up what she was gonna say everyday. Doesn't use slides or my learning space. Only answers your emails when its convenient for her, if you have a problem she probably won't help you. Final exam was ridiculous hard but she added extra time BUT didn't tell anyone. 11/10 thumb down
You must attend lectures in this course (as you should). She teaches the way a university prof should. Every lecture told you what you needed to know and paired with the readings, it was an amazing course. She would run class late sometimes and that was my only problem with her.
Helen was an incredible professor! Used no lecture slides or my learning space so it was definitely important to attend class. However, she was an extremely easy marker and definitely passionate about the content she teaches. Will be taking more courses with her for sure!
Helen Ramierz is probably one of my favourite profs. She is so passionate about what she talks about each class. She is a very caring and understanding prof as well as a fair marker. I highly recommend taking her courses!
shes such an intelligent person with lots of interesting stories. i hope other people see how valuable her lecture were!
Lectures seemed made up on the spot and didn't consist of any slides or include any general guidelines as to what she was discussing. She was very all over the place and rarely stuck to one point. She does not provide any rubrics of guidelines for assignments, most of the course is very unclear. The course lacks overall structure.
Helen never had a lesson structure. She would just talk and talk and ramble and rant for the entire class. She told us there was no good way for us to take notes. No slides, she seems very triggered by lots of things, especially if you accidentally talk in class. Tough grader with absolutely no feedback whatsoever. Goodluck
Just an awful Professor I was so so excited for this class to only have it turn to rambles with a lack of structure. WOULD NEVER TAKE AGAIN
Helen Ramirez is an amazing professor. Its true, she isnt big on power points and her classes do not have much structure. If you have poor adaptability this may hinder you. Her classes go beyond the textbook. she is so knowledgeable and inspiring. She is so kind, and i continue to connect with her even years after taking her course. Best prof!
Sets you up for failure
No structure to her lectures at all. She does not provide any feedback for assignments, and barely even explains what papers are supposed to be about. Do not have lecture slides online or even in class. Even her lectures make assumptions about people's situations, backgrounds, and cultures that are very filling in the blanks. Hypocritical prof.
The worst Professor I have ever had, and that's after Post Secondary accomplishments (not Including this Bachelor's). This Professor has completely changed my intent to minor in Gender Studies. There's no structure, no organization whatsoever, hard to follow along. With her many failed attempts at Inspiration or better known as tangents. AVOID
I took WS204 and did so poorly. She gives feedback and even if followed for the next paper, you will not do as well as you expect. Her lectures are super heavy in content which is understandable for WS. On the first day of online class (WS208), she said "I am glad you will not enjoy my course, only stay if you're ready for that". Good luck!
Not bad overall, but her lectures were brutal to sit through. No tests or exam which was nice, but tough grader. Her feedback also was no help, and was almost impossible to get higher than an 85 on most assignments. She seemed to care about students and struggles with Covid. Would not likely take again, but decent for first year course.
She doesn't use/upload power points because lectures are mostly discussions & conveos about the week's lesson. If you have poor adaptability, this may hinder you. But she is amazing, cares about the wellbeing of her students and really makes you connect with the course content. You just have to be present in class & pay attention to details
I found her to be the most useless professor, she doesn't give proper feedback on what you can do to improve and I found her to be a hard marker. She does no lectures and babbles all the time so she is not organized when it comes to topics.
Dr. Ramirez is thoughtful and caring and she wants her students to care about course material. She may not be your usual prof but she taught me a lot which I'm grateful for. She is very supportive outside of class. I'd take her classes again.
There's no tests or exams which is nice but her lectures are all over the place. As long as you write your paper on an issue she feel the same way about you'll do fine. Make sure to referee to the textbook
Gives no useful feedback and is super unhelpful in office hours. Lectures are all over the place. Would not recommend.
Lectures are all over the place with no real content or slides. More of her just rambling than anything. Papers provide minimal instruction and minimal feedback is provided. Papers worth 20% should have rubrics and legitimate feedback however neither will be provided to you. HARD skip on this class, max mark I ever heard of in our class was an 85..
By far one of the worst Prof's at Laurier. This prof is the most unhelpful in office hours, lectures make no sense and are just her talking about the most randomized things, if you do not hold her opinion she will hold it against you, it reflects in marks and the bias she has against certain students. Unprofessional!! Challenge her and you're done!
I was so excited for this class but have only been frustrated since starting. I think Helen is a great person and I'd love to have a glass of wine with her to discuss feminism and social issues BUT she's a horrible prof. She doesn't answer questions, she ignores students, she's very vague when describing what she wants, and she grades poorly.
Helen is very biased about certain subjects, if you have the same aggressive beliefs you will do fine in this course, otherwise this course will be an absolute nuisance. She has no clear criteria/syllabus and her lectures have nothing to do with the projects assigned. The more biased you are with your papers the higher your grade will be.
All of the assignments were papers for which she did not provide a rubric. Her lectures are extremely all over the place and have zero structure to them making them very boring to listen to. Her lack of feedback was frustrating because none of the grades were justified and there was no way to improve for the next assignment.
A horrible prof who is extremely bias and claims she doesn't "believe in rubrics" when asked for a breakdown of your mark. I would suggest you only take this course if you somehow know her opinion on all the assignments and can write exactly what she likes. I enjoyed her lectures but the assignments had nothing to do with them.
I received a B+ on all my assignments and got useless feedback. The feedback was extremely vague and proved that she is just a subjective marker. She said that she could edit my final paper for improvement. Once she edited it, she told me to change the entire paper the DAY it was due, only to give me a worse mark than all of my other papers.
Very rude, acts like we are still in high school.
SO HORRIBLE. Doesn't lecture or use slides rants abt random topics no instructions or rubrics for assignments no feedback delves into sensitive topics & speaks v graphically abt them often veers off-topic refuses to give 90's when asked how to do better simply responds with "no" overall v arrogant, insensitive and useless prof AVOID HER CLASS!
To be honest i am not sure why i bought a textbook if i didn't have to read it once in this class. The minute you get into the lecture, her rambling begins. It is very unorganized, no lecture slides, no course content, its really just listening to her ramble on random topics... she is also very bias.
BEWARE: Do not take this class!!!!! she does not provide any feedback, does not have a rubric for any assignments, and her lectures will put you to sleep. Her course outline solely contains the syllabus with zero additional resources. Tough marker if you don't agree with her opinions. Bought a textbook and never opened it once.
No rubrics, no helpful feedback on papers. When you ask her a question in person, she is frustrating/dismissive. No matter the effort you put in, she will criticize you for leaving something out which was not in the criteria, assignment instructions, lecture, etc... Stay away from this prof unless you want a headache. Please.
Taken fall 2021. Helen is the worst prof I have met. She did not follow her outline, didn't have slides, & makes up her lecture on the spot. She provides unclear marking schemes and feedback. I feel bad for the incoming first years as she primarily teaches this course. Just take it online as it's a great concept just poorly taught by Ramirez.
She graded all three of my papers twitch the exact same mark, despite various discussions before my final paper and CLEAR improvement. She neglected to give any feedback on my final paper, I highly doubt she even read it. Textbook is a waste of time.
Prof does not respond to emails and even when you do get a reply it's never more than 5 words. Feedback on anything is always so dry and there is honestly no proper reason or explanation for the marks you get.
she never provides any feedback or rubrics for any papers. the mark that you are given has no real explanation of why or where you lost marks. very opinionated. if you don't write about what she wants to hear, you will receive a bad grade no doubt. all assignment instructions are unclear and the grammar is indecipherable.
Very engaged with subject matter and knowledgeable. One of the most caring profs. You need to have cohesive ideas and express them well to get a good mark.
I took WS100 as a bird course, and it ended up being my lowest mark even lower than chemistry and calculus. Every single lecture she would just rant about 10 different things that were impossible to follow. Also does random in person participation in some lectures so you basically had to go. Papers were graded without explanation.
She was very passionate about the content but extremely unclear. She never offered criteria for the papers so it was difficult to understand the expectations. Terrible at giving feedback. It seemed she didn't even read your papers, she simple assigned the same grade to every paper, despite major improvement and following the limited feedback given
Very empathetic and understanding professor. She is very specific with her grading - make sure you understand every minutiae of her class cause you'll need it. Textbook is not needed except for one assignment, so just make friends in the lecture. No final, so the class is low stress
Helen Ramirez is extremely rude and makes unnecessary comments about students. Her lectures are very badly taught. As much as it is said to be an easy course, she makes going to class a very dreadful experience. Her lectures are very hard to follow, and she constantly speaks about stuff that is not relevant to the course. Would NEVER recommend it!!
Helen is cool that's gang. She spends the majority of the lectures talking about many different topics despite the syllabus calendar stating another. She prefers concise over quantity. She's easy to talk to but doesn't give you clear instructions always just wants you to be personal and FREE spirited when writing.
She's a very free spirit, her teaching style isn't for everyone. I found the actual work pretty easy although she never mentions much about the papers , you have to take it upon yourself to ask. Pretty easy course, no final exam.
The lectures follow no outline whatsoever. Although what she is saying is important she spend each class rambling for an hour and a half. In terms of marking don't expect any feedback. For assignments don't expect to be given clear explanation or requirements or a justified mark because she gives random grades and doesn't use rubrics
I literally went to 2 of her lectures and dropped the course. She has no lecture slides and just rambles which made it so difficult to follow along. Plus she sometimes doesn't speak clearly and so I have no clue what she's saying. Lots of people in my class looked like they wanted to leave the class, so I'd just stay away from her course
Her criteria for what she wanted you to write about was always so confusing, especially when she would grade your work.
Professor Ramirez has a unique teaching style - some find it free-spirited, others find it unfocused. The workload is manageable, but clear grading criteria can be elusive. For study prep, tools like unstuck study and ChatGPT can be helpful. Overall, an okay class if you're willing to put in the effort.
I love Gender studies but absolutly hated this class. The prof would ramble without any clear train of thought, often times it got extremely repetitive. I also found she would throw out incorrect facts, that were dated or just entirely untrue. Grading was inconsistent with no rubric or feedback provided. The prof seemed nice but the class was rough
Wouldn't recommend with Ramirez ever. You're better off taking it online. No notes, no reminders or explanations on assignments and a very draining atmosphere.
Worst prof I've ever had. She rambles on and on in her lectures. She assigns multiple papers, yet provides no rubric or actual feedback. NEVER TAKE HER CLASS.
Not a great prof but not my worst, a bit poorly organized, tends to ramble. I feel like she has the potential to be great but she misses the mark. Overall she needs to revise the way she teaches but survivable.
she doesn't provide PowerPoints in lecture so go. If you don't you will miss valuable information that is needed for the papers. This class has a the potential to be good but all the prof does is ramble with no clear direction as well participation matters.
She's really passionate about what she teaches and her lectures are honestly eye opening. You honetsly don't have to read the textbook just find what ur looking for and DEFINITELY ask questions for clarification and VISIT DURING HER HOURS! She's really cool to talk to trust + papers are less than 1000 worlds
One of my favourite professors! She can be quite intimidating at first, but I highly recommend visiting her during her office hours to discuss upcoming assignments/anything on your mind. Shes genuinely so kind and caring. It's also very important to attend classes! Although there's no slides, I find them to be quite interesting. Get ready to read!!
This professor mumbles most of the time during lectures and takes discussions way off topic . Never explains assignments or gives reminders that an assignment is due ahead of time and ifo you do not complete the assignment on time or at all then your mark is cooked. I would definitely not recommend taking any of her class ever again.
This course has the opportunity to be a really good course however lacks structure. There are no slides when she is giving a lecture + it is very hard to hear her. Each lecture never had a clear 'point' she tends to get very off topic a lot. Honestly, attendance is not mandatory whatsoever. If taken in person there is no midterm OR final exam.
Although she is very kind, she has no structure to her lectures; she only talks to the entire class and sometimes will have discussions for participation marks. She uses no rubrics to grade and gives minimal explanation for grades on assignments. I think she grades more based on how she feels.
This course was extremely disorganized and frustrating. Assignment instructions did not align with grading, and it felt like the professor expected students to know what she wanted without clearly stating expectations. Following feedback made no difference to grades, and questions were met with dismissive responses. Avoid if possible.
I would never take this prof again, I usually do super well in women and gender studies classes but she is very disorganized.
