a seasoned anthropologist, he made the course exceedingly interesting (at times). the exams were annoying, in that they're lenght made them difficult to finish in the allotted time. an optimal class to take on the basis of interest and couriousity.

I learned more in this class than I have in any other I've taken. He is one of the greatest teachers I have ever had!

He is very intelligent and has a lot of experience. Basically, he lectures and puts notes on the overhead. Sort of a hard grader, but I still got an A.

I really like his class. I think he made class fun because he tried to relate to students and has a good sense of humour. The tests aren't too difficult. You just have to make sure to study your notes. I got an A in his class and didn't die trying.

This guy was great! You could tell he knows his stuff. He is incredibly clear and coherent. He makes sure you know what you need to know with some extra fun facts on the side. If you go to class, take the notes and review them, you'll hardly have to touch the book.

This was a really hard class. He is the division head for the Anthropoloy department so he is pretty strict. You really have to put your time into studying for this class. The tests are really tough. Publ is really boring.

He is teacher with vast knowldge in his field. But, don't take his class unless you want to work hard. His exams are so hard and you have to use maximum amount of time effort in this class. There is no extra credit to improve your grades.

don't buy the book, you don't need it. he lectures every class and u end up with about 3 pages of notes but it's really good cuz it prepares you for the quizes and tests. tests aren't bad if you show up the classes and write down his notes you'll end up with a a decent grade without even studying.

He was very informative and really knows what he is talking about and even uses some of his own experiences as examples. If you take notes in his class you will most likely do very well.

For this class you don't need to buy a book. His notes is good enought to prepare for the test. But, his test is kindaa difficult to get an A you will have to rub your asss off. TRUST ME..

Dr. Publ is awesome, lectures are very interesting, a lot of notes in class, but no surprises on tests, intersting stories from his past, he really likes his Aztecs, Mayas,Olmecs etc.Show up to class and it's a guaranteed A, he has an unbelievable collection of artifacts from Meso-America. It's fun!

Amazing professor! His lectures are very interesting because he calls on students to help him make examples (and it's hilarious when he calls on those who don't pay attention) so to get the message across a little better. There are quite a few notes, but a good portion of it is common sense.

Excellent teacher with vast knowledge who clearly enjoys what he does. Fair but not unreasonable amount of work required. If you come to class, pay attention, and take good notes you should do fine. I learned a lot and am glad I took this class.

He is definatly an easy teacher. Show up to every class. Everything on his tests are in the notes he gives. Don't bother reading the book. The tests are very easy and I spent about an hour studying for each test. He is very friendly and always willing to help. He gives a lot of good examples and has a lot of interesting stories. TAKE HIM!

its hard to know wat notes to write down because he just talks throughout the class. so dont take his class if u are expecting him to have notes ready for you. he is very smart though, but he talks very softly

Dr. Publ is an awesome teacher. He doesn't mess around with homework or attendence he just likes to get straight to the material. He does a great job of explaining helping you understand exactly what he is saying. He has students participate in class an easy going enviroment. And he definetely knows what he is talking about no doubt.

Had Dr Publ during the Summer Session and it was a great class: he was very animated, engaged the class and was honest about the tests, material and the work involved. I would've liked to do the Regular semester version.

He is an awesome teacher for any student. following are the tips to get an A in the class. Attend all the lectures, "AY ATTENTION ON HIS NOTES", and read some IMP things from book. You will get an A. He is really good and knowledgeable.Go for it and dont even think more.

Publ is the greatest teacher ever! He's personable, helpful, friendly, and extremely intelligent. Make sure you take really good notes because most of the material on the quizzes and tests is from the notes. It's hard not to pay attention in class because he makes it so interesting. Take him and you definitely won't regret it.

I'm not sure what the two most recent ratings were about. He is by far the best teacher that I have had in three years! Without giving out any homework, he still somehow manages to truly teach one the subject matter. I loved having no work to do, no papers to write, and only studying for four exams. Knows his stuff and is truly helpful. Brilliant!

Dr. Publ does a fantastic job of helping students grasp this science. Get through the first test, and the rest of the class gets easier. No homework; grade is from 4 test scores. But GO TO CLASS, READ, and TAKE NOTES--seriously. Dr. Publ can seem uptight at first, but he soon relaxes. Actually, he's a really funny guy! Danke schön, Dr. Publ.

As a returning student after many years I was afraid of the difficulty. Prof Publ was excellent from the first class. He showed genuine concern for his students,their understanding of the class & what was expected from Day 1. Grades based on 4 exams; exam materials reviewed at the prior class. GREAT INSTRUCTOR! MUST TAKE NOTES-DO NOT MISS A CLASS!

Great teacher that always makes things interesting and he his willing to explain anything that isn't clear to you. He also talks about interesting things associated with that topic that the classs is discussing. His grading methods are simple, take notes,study,show up, and do well on tests and you get a good grade.

An excellent professor with an incredible amount of knowledge in regards to his field. Regular class attendance and notes will be more than enough to succeed within his class. The textbook was minimally used, with almost all info coming through his lectures. The Nat'l Geographic articles will all appear on his quizzes and exams.

Publ is a great professor! He treats his students like adults, is always reasonable, and he really brings you into the subject and involves you in it. He never leaves you unprepared for the material he uses for exams and quizzes either, which is really helpful.

Very intelligent and experienced. More scholarly than many professors. He is impatient though. The class has lots and lots of info, lots of notes - you really can't afford to miss a class. Grades are based on 4 tests, and he is tough about retakes. It's a great class though. It will be hard so expect to read to backup lecture notes. Easy B.

He's a very nice guy, cracks jokes fairly often, easy to talk to. His quizzes and tests are all based on notes and sometimes from the book (which means you have to read the book to get A's; just the notes and listen in class to get B's). He is also VERY knowledgable on the subject of sociology and its effects in modern day society.

mr. publ is a good teacher but if you're a slacker dont take him becuase you cant miss class, he lectures a lot and most times they are boring! tests are right out of the notes you take in class...he is a tough grader real nice guy..take him if you want to learn.

I believe everyone should take Anthro. It opens your mind and helps you understand how we are all connected. Publ makes you see this in his lectures and if you take notes and study them before the tests, you'll be fine. the third test is the easiest.

Your grade is based on 4 major tests. STUDY FOR THEM! You do NOT need the book, his notes and handouts are all you need! In the beginning, it is slow and boring but then it got interesting when we started on Religion, Family, and Magic. He has a low voice so be sure to pay attention! He can be funny at times. You don't need the textbook. Just take lots of notes and study the guides that he gives you. The first test is the hardest. The third and fourth are much easier. Don't miss a class. He doesn't like that and you will miss out on his lecture. FYI... DON't sit in the back. He talks low and then he gets lower. The man knows his stuff thats for sure!

Extremely smart and funny professor. Take notes and go to every class. He helped me out when I scheduled my trip to Japan for the same day as the final on accident. He let me take the final a day early so that I did not miss my flight or my final. 6 years later and he is still my favorite professor.

You HAVE to be in class and pay attention. His tests are hard; take tidieous notes and study them. His tests are solely on the notes. Don't even bother buying the book or study guide.

I've taken Prof Publ's ANT 101 and his native american class (which I highly recommend) and both were very well organized and well taught classes. His lectures are pretty interesting and they contain all the information that is on the exams. There are 3 or 4 exams and a few mini quizzes and that's all so study your notes, go to class and get an A/B

First, it's crucial to attend every single class. The test questions come directly from his lectures. He has a lot of hands-on experience in the field, and I learned a ton in the class. I didn't even know what anthropology was before I enrolled, but I came away fascinated and engrossed in the subject. Outstanding professor.

If you attend all the classes and pay attention to all his videos and notes and show interest in what he is saying, you will ACE this course. Dr. Publ is an amazing professor and I do wish more instructors were like him.

There are 4 tests. 300 points each. Those are your only grades. 265/300 is an A so it's not impossible to get an A on the tests. Must attend every single class or you miss a lot. Taking for summer school, a lot of information to take in. Good guy though. Anthropology isn't my thing though. Not a terrible class at all.

Great teacher!! He is a world traveler and truly knowledgeable in his lectures. I was not interested in anthropology until I took this class. I now have a better understanding of what can be learned from ancient human fossils and other societies. There are only 4 tests-easy if you simply take notes on the lectures and attend class.

Took his anthropology class at Harper last semester and he was an awesome professor! There are no papers, just tests. Attendance is really important if you want to do well. I got an A and loved participating in class. Very interesting content covered that I don't think I will ever forget. Great class

Definitely recommend taking his course! Not only is he intelligent but he has a sense of humor. You're paying for school so you may as well take a challenging course. I liked him so much, I took his Native American course as well. Great guy!

First class I sat in the middle, the next class I sat in the front row because he is soft spoken. He has a lot of stories to tell. Exams are based of lecture, however I would recommend that you also use the book and take notes of it since they are hard. If you take good notes, I would recommend you take the class.

He is my favorite Harper professor. He seems to know everything about everything. I disagree with many of the comments here. I took ANT101 and SOC101 and never opened my book once. I received an A in both classes. The tests are based on the lectures and if you thought otherwise, you weren't paying attention or taking notes at all.

I took his class and passed with a B. Yes, he gives only four exams worth 300 but you have to be present in all of his lectures and take very good notes, in other words, write everything he says down! I did not buy the textbook because the tests were all based on his lectures.

This is not an easy class. Your only grades come from the 4 exams. If you pay attention to the lectures, do the assigned reading, and study, you should be fine though. He is a bit harsh and a bit narcissistic, but if you get past that he is a very good professor. His lectures are very interesting. The last unit goes by a bit too fast though.

Mr. Publ is one of my favorite teachers ever. His classes are all just lecture and sometimes films but he keeps it interesting by sprinkling funny things in or telling awesone stories about his time in the field. Publ is so passionate about Anthropology, so it makes his lectures bearable. He only grade's on the 4 exams given, but there isn't any study guides, he just gives you a 5 minute recap before the end of class the day before. The only grades we had are the 4 exams and nothing is posted online. No homework, quizzes, or papers. If you show up and pay attention, he pretty much tells you what to know for the exams. I do not enjoy learning about Social Sciences but Publ made the class enjoyable. At the same time you have to work for an A. He does offer to help you outside of class but make sure you ask smart questions. No hand holding. He does not use any online resources but that should not matter. Reading the book is technically optional but helps prepare u.

I am not sure why some people gave him such low reviews. It is simple; show up to class, take notes, study, and you will pass. Everything you need to know is in the lectures, so if you miss a class, ask a classmate if you can borrow their notes. He's really funny and I enjoyed taking his class. Professor Publ's class was mostly lectures and based on a few tests throughout the semester. I enjoyed his lectures a lot, he clearly is very knowledgable in his subject and talks about his experience in the field often. He is also very approachable, good for a 100 level class.

Prof. Publ is funny. Personally, I found this class to be challenging for a three-credit course because his lectures were extremely detailed and we needed to pay attention every second to take notes for everything he said. On top of that, his exams were challenging b/c his wording was tricky. There were no graded assignments besides the four exams.

Amazing teacher. I think back at his course with with great memories. I would love to take another one of his courses.
