His accent didn't bother me, actually made me pay attention more. He is very unclear, answers questions w/ questions. Spends most of class going off on corporations trying to brainwash us. Just take notes and study them for the tests thats all you can do.

A very intelligent person, but his lectures can be difficult. He gets irritated with ignorant students. If you go over your essays with him beforehand and do what he wants, you'll get a good grade. Hard tests.

Wonderful. Absolute genius. He will make you question your very existance. Also extremely insightful, and more eloqunet in english, than most native speakers. Also, you should paint his door black.

Nice guy. Looks just like John Kerry and talks in a German accent. But you have to be on the exact same wavelength as him to get an A. For our midterm, the highest grade was n 81/100. Heh, good luck if you're taking this class. Just study your notes and ask questions. He loves helping out students.

Horrible, horrible class! So frustrating. He'll drift away on some unrelated tangent and tell the class how ridiculous American culture is, and will never, ever give an affirmative answer, though he encourages questions. The final paper is awful, no guidance. And he's BORING.

The most horrible and boring class ever!!! If you want to gauge your eyes out take this class! Every other word he says is "By in large" and he reminds of the guy in the Clearasil commercials because he is so god damn terrible. Avoid this class like the plague!

he's a really cute old man and you can tell he really cares about philosophy... but overall, it was hard material that wasnt made any more clear by his teaching and he is definitely THE HARDEST grader i've ever had! you have 1 huge term paper and barely anyone passed, he told us he never expects higher than a C average on his tests and papers!

He states that to get an A,expect to spend 20 hours/week out side of class studying... An interesting class, but he grades really tough, and only has a few big assignments,plus although the professor is great and passionate,he isnt clear.lots of in class discussions.attendance is mandatory. 20-30 pgs per week,the text is dense,hard to comprehend.

Horrible. Boring subject, even more boring teacher. Once someone asked if an answer to a problem was right, he said if we knew how to do the problem then we should know if the answer were right or not. Most of the class ended up failing because he grades so impossibly.

Completely Misunderstood. Easily the most brilliant man alive, but most students are too Americanized and stupid to understand the brilliance that this man can convey. If you are really here to learn, take his class. If you want to be challenged with truly philisophical concepts and meet a man that knows the secret to existene take his class.

I think this class was perfect for the time in my life. If you are close-minded, without sense of humor or intellegence, or if you want an easy A, I would suggest not taking it. If you really want to get something out of it you can't think of it as just another GE class.

He has a funny name. But that is beside the point. He has a lot of knowledge and he challenges you to think. He is helpful if you have directed questions. It is important to participate in class discussions. Start the term paper sooner rather than later. If you like to think he is a great teacher. He is a cool dude.

Very thick european accent!! Useless notes, interesting logs. Seems like a laid back guy, however he grades extremely hard. Tests are impossible to get above a C on! Takes role everyday, and he is the most unclear guy I've ever met. He expects you to know what hes thinking.

unwilling to help, was not available for questions at office hours before mid-term. HEAVY Austrian/German accent, monotone, slow talker, if you want to be pushed and have a serious interest in philosophy he is the teacher for you, if not GET SOMEONE ELSE. TAKE HIS ADVICE AND START TERM PAPER EARLY THE ASSIGNED BOOKS ARE VERY DIFFICULT.

This class is relatively easy but he makes it harder than it should be! his accent makes it very difficult to understand but if you really pay attention, youll realize that he is very smart. attend class and do your best in the tests and youll get no lower than a C.

oh my god-never have I been so frustrated. I asked him to shorten his points because he talks forever and by the end you have died of a brain hemorrage from trying to find out what he is saying and his response lasted for 45 minutes-this guy is like a books on tape of quantum physics-the expanded version-in German

A lot of people don't like this guy but I do. He's pretty straightfoward and easy to understand if you actually pay attention to him. He has a clever wit and sense of humor as well. Make sure to get started on the essay right away tho and study like crazy!! Keep up with the reading too, it helps a lot.

Horrendous class. Don't get me wrong, I loved Helmut - he's hilarious and intelligent, but his level of teaching is extremely high. His tests are way too hard, a lot of writing to do, grades like none other without any curve. I got the second highest score in my class on the midterm and it was a 77. Don't take this class. DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS.

This class was one of the most boring classes I have ever taken. The books he used were terrible. He thought the literature was as worthy as the bible and the book was filled with grammtical errors. He talks for over an hour and does not explain any of his essay assignments. He insults science and medicine continuously.

He is one of the very best professors I've ever had. He's a very kind person who patiently allows everyone in the class to share their ideas. The exams were difficult, but he gives extra points for the journal and research paper. I took the intersession class and really learned a lot.

absolutely horrible teacher, probably the worst i have EVER had. difficult to understand b/c of his accent and just horribly long tangents. HATES cell phones. gives NO help on final/midterm questions. leaves answers open to interpretation (but they are still always wrong) do not take if you want an easy A. for a 101 class its way too difficult.

W H A T ? Is all I have to say about Helmut. Probably the worst teacher I will ever have; don't know why he has to make things soooooo much more complicated than they have to be. Refuses to give answers to practice midterm. It is pretty much useless to study for the tests because you are not gonna get the grade you want. Highest grade on midterm=72

I know I'm in the minority here, but i think Helmut is one of the greatest teachers at SSU. Yes, he grades very hard, but he's the classic college philosophy professor, either you understand him or you don't. I got an A in his 101 and 200 classes, so it's not impossible, but i'd only take him if you want something more than an in-and-out GE class

Helmut is a misunderstood philosopher who is a good looking aging unhappy professor and it shows. He is obviously bored teaching intro philosophy. His grading system includes a mumbo jumbo grade jump( if you get 20 points more on the final than on the rediculously hard midterm you get to jump to the next grade!)I did not have any idea what my grade

Worst professor at SSU. I showed up t every class and I was failed. He wants you to think like he does and does not welcome individual thought. There is no structure to his class and expects you to understand the material. He offers no help when you question what he wants. He also plays favorites.

This was probably my favorite class my first semsester at SSU. It is a very hard class and you have to study. the study guide is exactly like the midterm and final. You just have one book to read and one term paper which if you finish a little early he will help you with. you have all semester to do the paper.great discussions!!!

Challenges students to trust their own methods of critical thinking and sometimes will not give the answers to questions. Very thought provoking. I enjoyed his class, but found myself studying very hard for his midterm.

This man is SO German, (wears socks with sandals and a vest everyday) you have to listen very carefully when he talks. He kind of mumbles, no tests, no homework. Except he doesn't help AT ALL for the midterm/final. Make sure you take notes, that's the only help you get.

Its a VERY hard class but you can get an A if you work and study for the mid terms and finals. He is very helpful to individuals who need help during class. Lectures can extremely boring, but if you show up and take notes then you should be ok. He is a brilliant teacher, but I wouldnt recommend taking him unless you have to. START TERM PAPER EARLY!

When I found out I had him, I was terrified from what I read on this site. But after taking the class, I found the exact opposite. His accent is totally understandable and he is really willing to go the extra mile to make sure students understand the concept, which can be hard with philosophy. He is funny too. DONT HATE THE PLAYER, HATE THE GAME!

This class is not as hard as some of the other posts suggest. There is a paper,ten journal entries a midterm and final. The class is critical thinking, so if you can think logically you will do fine. His accent is understandable, and those who can't understand him need to go take a literacy class. Basically if you have common sense you get a B- min

helmut is amazing! the socks with sandals and vest and Austrian accent combination is awesome and if you listen really hard he makes really funny comments. i thought he was ok at teaching, lots of examples in class and he seems to care about his students. just keep up with the work and youll be fine

Do not take Helmut unless you have no other option...and I mean absolutely no other option. Like, SSU has lost all funding and they've fired every phil prof. except Helmut. He makes the class unnecessarily difficult and does not help with the midterm/final review. The lectures are boring and he falls asleep during log reading.

Helmut was extremely difficult! He teaches all of the concepts in class so if you dont understand it, you have to have a study group. 2 mid terms that are wayy to hard even when i studied for hours on end. paper was ridiculous. DO NOT sign up to read his book he wrote for your paper.

Ok. So there are so many comments on her about how bad Helmut is. He is not bad at all. you understand him just fine, if you take notes in class(plenty of time to do so), theres no need to have to have the book. No hw except for logs 2 tests and a paper that is kind of difficult. but overall hes actually really good & answers all questions in class

It seems to be that you either hate Helmut, or can barely stand him. He's got a thick accent, and if you don't completely understadn the concepts, then you're basically screwed. And if you have questions, he won't answer them. The grade depends on 10 logs, 2 tests and 1 paper. I don't recommend him at all... For phil 101 I hear Ada is the best :)

Almost the worst professor I ever had. I never forget this quote "you have to parse to pass" but his accent is so thick is sounds like "you have to parse to parse." He is awful and a complete waste of life on this earth in the 101 classroom. Years after taking his class I still think back to the days I had him and wish I had known about this site.

READ THIS best advice for this guy: change grading to credit/no credit asap it will save your life, start on the midpaper RIGHT AWAY (and take advantage of his office hour editing), dont miss more than 2 classes or your grade will suffer. other than that just try to stay awake and just know that NO ONE is ever prepared for his midterm. good luck

Although hard, this professor isn't the worst one out there. He may not be apt to give you the answer right away but he is available to discuss things in his office hour. It IS a critical thinking class, so think! Use your dictionary for more than what seems to be needed on the tests. And pay attention to what he says not what you think he means.:)

A lot of people have negative comments on here, but in reality Helmut is not this bad. His class has 2 tests and 1 paper. The paper is the hard but the class is easy to pass. You do have to work hard to get an A. Word of advice: read your text! Helmut is a very nice man and is understanding. He just has a different style of teaching & isnt easy.

one of the single worst teachers i have ever had. He speaks very softly and you have no idea what he is talking about most of the time. he has a pretty thick accent and if you get something wrong there is no explanation. i didnt see him smile the entire semester. if you can get out of his class i would highly recommend it.

This is not an easy class. An A is nearly impossible, but if you study for the two tests and write a solid paper, you should get a B no sweat. Dr. Wautischer isn't extremely helpful and once class is over, he was often the first one out the door. Gave off the impression that he is above teaching an intro Phil class at SSU, and probably is.

overall not a lot of work in the class. just one big paper, logs, one midterm and a final. but wow studyyyy for the tests he is not there to help at all and expects you to teach yourself. pretty tough compared to other phil 101 classes

I personally think that this was a pretty straight forward class. He gives you practice tests before the midterm and final and these tests contain the same material that is on the real test. There is only one big project and overall, other than studying, I didn't have to do a lot of outside class work.I learned a lot for this class and enjoyed it.

Helmut is not that bad of a guy...however his class is not the easiest of philosophy classes...therefore you should take him but make the class credit/no credit...This will allow you to slack off a bit more with out having to worry about your GPA being affected...overall I thought the class was fair and not too boring

Helmut does not know how to teach... I have gone up to him multiple times and each time he tells me to go ask a student. the only reason i can understand what is going on in the class is if i read the book. He is useless and it is impossible to get an A. AVOID

He is a terrible teacher. I wish I was warned before taking his section of Phil. He isn't helpful AT ALL and won't answer questions often. He expects you to know all the correct answers and will not give you the answers/help with the test reviews. WORST PROFESSOR.

Most people seem to hate him, but I thought he was a great teacher. Once you get used to his teaching style and GO TO CLASS, then you'll be fine. Just study hard and you'll be all right. I was the only person in my class to get an A, though, so that's saying something.

Helmut is by far the worst teacher I've ever had. He speaks slowly and has a weird accent, so just about everything he says is impossible to decipher. I ended up with a B after putting together a solid term paper and studying hard for the final. It's up to you to learn the material with the book and reviews.

Everyone seems to think he's a bad teacher but I thought he was fine.. He is an extremmmmeeeelly smart man so when he talks it sounds boring but if you really actually listen to what he says you'll understand him better and do well in the class. He's not easy but you can tell he works hard to not let people fail.

Horrible teacher. SO MUCH outside reading and it isn't possible to understand him. He makes you feel uncomfortable and stupid. Doesn't prepare you at all for the final and it's ridiculously hard. Has no office hours and makes you feel dumb for asking a question in class. Don't take it.

I honestly thought he was a wonderful teacher. He tells you exactly what he expects from you at the beginning of the semester, and as long as you show up, contribute in class, and actually pay attention it's not hard at all. He's funny and constantly asks if we need help with anything. I recommend him, he's a smart guy and he knows his subject.

He is such a great teacher. He tells you up front that the class will be difficult and that if you put in the effort you can easily get a C, I easily got an A and had never before done this type of philosophy. I highly reccomend this teacher.

I don't know why there are so many negative reviews for Helmut. This is such an easy class, he always asks if we need clarification or extra help, and I never once was uncomfortable or that it was hard to understand him. His class is so laid back and chill, while the other PHIL101 classes have all this homework and inclass work. I highly recommend

Took this 1st semester freshman year, looking back probably could have done better. Its a legit college class that relies on discussion and putting in work outside of class. Even going into his office hours. Do what he says and contribute in class and you should be golden.

Dr. Wautischer really is not bad at all. I hate public speaking but he makes it easy for you to do so. If you take notes and listen to what he says it isnt too hard. only 2 assignments are given throughout the whole year which take less than a day to do. the class is kind of funny once everyone is comfortable with each other!

Dr. Wautischer really is not that bad. There is hardly any out of class work, besides the weekly journal logs (easy) and maybe textbook reading (not mandatory). There was one large essay @ end of year, an in-class presentation (not too bad) and studying for the final. I got an A, and it was easier than other PHIL 101 classes

If you appreciate sarcasm, you will appreicate Helmut. He's funny! He's a great professor (SUPER smart), but you'll definitely have to work hard in this class. The content isn't very easy to understand, but if you show that you're trying he takes notice. Also, his accent is a little hard to get used to at first.

He is a very intelligent guy. He is somewhat difficult to understand at first. His course isn't extremely challenging, but the final is, so do well on the analysis paper, presentation, logs, attendance, and the final. The class is pretty interesting altogether and if you pay attention, the topics discussed are worth thinking about!

Knows what he's talking about. Solid teacher; tries to be as clear as possible. Be sure to ask when you are not clear on something; office hours and the book will help greatly in clarifying things. Sometimes sarcastic, but never in a negative way. Almost too politically correct (probably students in the past complaining). Manageable accent.

Wautischer has to be a certified genius. He is a phenomenal teacher and a great person. If you ask him for help during office hours, he goes above and beyond to help you. If you can joke around with him, he will love you.

Definitely a class that you have to be willing to put in time outside of. Professor Wautischer is absolutely brilliant. If you've never googled him, read a bit about his life. Truly fascinating. I happily got a B by visiting his office hours frequently for clarity on topics we covered in class. If you can make him laugh, he'll like you a lot.

He is a genius, but it was impossible for me to understand the topics. You don't know your grade until after the final (when final grades come out). He is nice, but if you were hoping for an easy GE, then this is not the class for you. 1 final. 10 Journal entries. Have to read a book and do a 25 minute presentation and 7 pg paper on the book .

I'm not a philosophy person, so maybe that's why I disliked this class so much. The discussions were intriguing and thought provoking, but having to read a whole book and right a 10 page paper on it and give a 10 minute presentation on it was not. I passed solely on the fact that I participated and came to class everyday. Don't know how I got a B.

This guy is great honestly! He is sort of hard to understand and the class can drag on but he always gives a 10 minute break. Show up to class, with 2 freebies. He has a great sense of humor and is really witty makes class more fun. I just did all my assignments, journal, presentation and paper, failed the final and got a B+. Very easy to pass.

This is honestly the hardest class I've ever taken. Concepts are difficult and he wont tell you if youre right or wrong so youre in a constant state of confusion. You read a book that has nothing to do with the class write a paper & 25 min presentation on it, 10 journal entries (you present one), 1 final. Wont know your grade until end of semester

discourages visiting office hours. refuses to tell grades, grades he does tell students must be told in front of the whole class to hear. over half the class failed the midterm, no curve given. tests obviously made years ago and never amended to that term's class. rarely gives students to talk on days he actually teachers. extremely boring.

As a person, Helmut is quite interesting, but he is one of the toughest professors I have had. He will never give you a straight answer and is very difficult to deal with him. The class gets extremely boring and I find it baffling that he is able to fill an entire 4 hours with total uncertainty. The class would be better if he was clear and helpful

Professor Wautischer is a very kind person, however it does not make up for his lack of anthusiasum he has for teaching students. He expects you to pretty much teach yourself, and has a very difficult grading process to understand. The book is completely useless use YouTube, discourages students to visit him during office hours. Book is useless.

99% of this class: pointless awkward silence and the other 1%: him teaching poorly. When you ask him a question about the content, he goes off about something else and doesn't actually answer you. He has a final study guide, and has the class discuss it while he just watches. No helping. He doesn't teach, he just fails us. Don't take his class.

He does not explain the concepts at all. He will give one brief, ambiguous definition of a concept and then expect us to be perfect. He will have in class exercises for the ideas, but will just sit there and not help at all, then does not even tell the students if they were right or not. He is terrible at teaching and doesn't believe in technology.

An amazing professor who you hate until after youve passed his class! Hes an interesting and intelligent guy but you do have to put in some work. Participation is key! I came to every class and participated everyday. Got average grades on my assignments& failed the final but was bumped up to an A because I participated so much! Just participate!!

Today in class he made jokes about those who seek professional help for depression. DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS. His lectures say one thing, he says another and the test says a third thing. He spent an hour going over what we did wrong on the tests to the point the first hour of class was worthless. Won't tell grades until end of semester.

The class itself was not horrible, its very easy to pass if you fail the final. Just don't procrastinate on logs, the term paper and your presentation and you should be fine. Also participating in his class is important for your grade. Helmut himself is kind of difficult to deal with with grades, but he's super interesting if you like philosophy.

Unless you have LITERALLY no choice, avoid at all costs. Refuses to have any online accessible material (not even a basic canvas page), does not use powerpoint or any other engaging media to make lectures easier to engage - he just talks at you. Has no leniency for those with disabilities and has made fun of those with depression and mental issues in class. This professor gives no help to those with disabilities. There were 6 disabled students in my section and all of them ended up dropping the course (Including myself)because this professor would not accommodate anyone. Don't take it if you can avoid it.

Helmut is the most stubborn and inaccessible professor I've ever had. He does not use canvas and barely responds to emails. He believes he is always right and that students claims of unequal grading and needing help are false/unnecessary. He is aware that students try to bring him to the board, he doesn't care. Very old fashioned, yet easy to understand. If you respect him, he'll respect you. Participate in the group discussions and do your best of the presentation and logs and you'll be fine. If you are struggling as him for help or youtube it. If you try your best he'll see that and give you a good grade just don't slack or be rude. Overall a fun class.

Good professor. Old-fashioned, but if you respect him and try your best, he will respect you and see that you are trying. Your grade is reflected by your effort, but it's not that difficult. Read your assigned book, work hard on your presentation, finish all 10 logs, and study for the final, no more no less. I respect him well enough. Old ideas tho

He knows philosophy, but he isn't the greatest at explaining philosophical ideas. He is great at explaining who is doing what in each class session though, that can take 20 minutes... Be prepared to read a philosophical book that won't make any sense and present it to the class. As well as read the textbook that is about as clear as the professor.

Professor Wautischer is awful. He will put you on the spot whenever possible and makes you feel bad for not knowing exactly what he wants you to say. Be sure to read EVERY single assignment instruction because he won't be sympathetic if you miss something. He talks all class period about absolutely nothing and sits in silence until someone talks.

Do not take this class if you can help it. He is extremely set in his ways and if you have a different viewpoint or opinion from him you are automatically wrong. He wants you to be extremely specific in the log and almost wants you to have some sort of personal issue to share with the class. He often rants about nonsense and goes off on tangents.

Helmut is an odd character. From the first day in class he treated our class in a condescending way, and makes you feel inferior if your opinion differs from him in any way. He has no respect for his students and their mental health, and is consistently harder on the females in the class than anyone else. He has a very old school style of teaching.
