She is such a sweet person and always ready to help- all you have to do is ask. Chemistry is a hard class in general, just like all other science courses, so don't think you'll just pass by. It's a lot of information, but she is a good teacher!!

She's a very nice lady, and extremely helpful during lab. Very knowledgable in subject, but has difficulty teaching information during the lecture portion. Started giving pop quizzes at end of lectures, but switched to take home.

Very nice lady but not the greatest teacher. This was her first semester though so she's just inexperienced. You won't get much out of lecture, I had to learn everything from the book. She's a pretty easy grader though so if you read and do the labs, you'll get a B.

She was my lab professor and the labs are very easy. Gives you lab reports at the being of the semester then towards the middle you just have to answer questions. Her accent is rather tough at times. Attend class and ask for help and you can pull off a "B".

Horrible teacher. I recommend taking her if you want to be judged and treated like crap.Picks her favorites, if you arent one, kiss a passing grade goodbye. Cant understand anything she says. if you ask her questions she doesnt answer them. DONT TAKE HER!!!

She gives a lot of homework, i feel like i'm always doing homework for chemistry, but by the time the quiz comes around i feel completely ready. there is a graded homework due the same day as the quiz that is pretty much identitical to the hw. a little hard to understand but gets the concept across, i like her a lot, its not a bad class at all

Eventhough it's hard to understand her, She was extremely helpful. She tries to explain everything and would not stop until you understand it. Good Teacher! Lecture class was not mandatory but MUST attend LAB! Easy Lab!

I am a Chem major and had Dr. VanHuizen for Chem 110 and earned an A. You do have to work hard, but the best thing I love about her is that she tells you what to expect on the exams. There are no surprises and she is very fair. She is extremely helpful and knows a great deal of Chemistry. She geniunely cares for her students. A+ Professor!

The class isn't hard but if you're not on her good side don't even try. Refused to help because she didn't believe I cared. Graded all homeworks on if you got the answers right, not if it's complete. When I went to an open lab to ask questions I was told I couldn't redo the experiment with my partner, who had been absent, and told to leave. Rude

"Doesn't remember" talking to you after class, says "I never said that" so don't ask anything important after lecture. Someone asked during class "why is that a polar molecule?" her response "because it's polar." Reminded us lots in lecture that 2/3 of the class got C's in 110, and that this grade will be lower. Teaches by humiliation. Unclear.

Very good professor--HIGHLY recommend. I came into her class hating chemistry, and had always struggled with it. But I earned an A.She goes out of her way to make sure you understand, and spells out exactly what's on the exams. gives quizzes and collects homework.

Dr.Rika is a wonderful professor, she is new to chem111, maybe she is bit inexperienced, but she is always care about her students. She tried hard to help everyone to become successful.Super nice person. I would consider her as one of the best Chem professors despite sometimes she gets nervous and make mistakes. who doesnt make mistake,be forgiven

very hard... hard as shyt even though I got a B-... you really have to read the textbook... sleepless nights, reduced partying time, however the grade was worth it... INTERESTING FACT ABOUT HER... Teacher was ok. She was not very helpful, I went to her office several times for help and she told me to go to the tutoring center instead of trying to help me. Gives a lot of work that I thought was not helpful but confusing. She is a nice lady though and understanding if you have legitimate reason for missing lab.

Do not listen to anyone that says this teacher is bad. She is great. Gives you every possiblity to get extra credit (ie, doing all the home work, and grading your won test). Yes she assigns homework, but you are in college, and it is desgined to help you!! She actually gets to know her students personally and cares that they do good! Great prof

Lecture was very boring, mostly just going over practice problems rather than explanation of concepts. Quizzes given nearly weekly, as well as optional homework. Doing the homework gets you 2% extra credit for the course. 3 Exams, some exam problems don't have similar examples on test. Lab with her was a lot of fun, unlike class time.

To all thoes who claim this teacher is horrible, or boring....I do not know what you expect from a college chem class. She is not boring, as a matter of fact is very intresting if you get to know her. If you are not successful in her class, then you did not put forh any effort. I had her three years ago, and still speak to her on a daily basis

Here's the pros of Van Huizen: easy homework, only a few lab reports, will be very flexible with your grade (test redos), and is real with explaining stuff in simple introductory terms. Here's the cons of Van Huizen: she has an accent(not too thick), she can miss a calculation on the board(pay attention), and that's it. Take her if you want an A.

I saw many classmates struggle, but I did well myself. I don't know how it'd have been if I hadn't taken chemistry in high school. I personally think 30% of the class was new to me. If you're struggling, don't skip homework or practices. Also, check with her on e-mail to get good grade on lab report.

prof. Huizen is such a good teacher, she answers questions and really cares. If you pay attention and ask questions you should do well. Didn't use book as much. Dont listen to any of the other bad comments, those are from people who sleeps in class, comes late to class, & never tries. She is also very nice, and will give you extra credit if u try.

Dr. Van Huizen is a great teacher. She really cares about her students and will go over concepts as many times as she needs to so that everyone is clear on the lesson. She is available outside the classroom and gives many opportunities for extra credit. Even is Chemistry isn't your thing, if you put in the time and effort, you'll do really well.

3 Exams, 1 cumulative final. Had quizzes almost every class. She's a great professor. Wants you to do well, & offers many extra credit opportunities. She is a hard grader though, so be extra cautious about what you write on quizzes, exams, lab reports! Material isn't hard, it's just a lot to memorize. Definitely recommend her out of everyone else!!

nice lady..means well but is a horrible professor. thick accent and the toughest grader you'll ever come across.She teaches the class as if its a 300 level organic chem class when its only a 101 pre nursing class.do not take if you want to have a social life or sleep.i spent way too many hours on this class to get a c-. not worth my effort with her

Great Professor. Very knowledgeable and will challenge you. 4 Tests, 1 cumulative final, graded homework, extra credit homework(do it), and quizzes. Quizzes are easy, tests do challenge you but are realistic in requirements. Lab reports are what will kill you though. Take your time do them right.

I hate chemistry so thats why the class was hard for me, but Prof. Van Huizen knew that so she was always willing to explain things to me outside of class. I took her for lab/lecture which was great bcs I always got a re-cap of the lecture during the lab. By far the best teacher for this course. You will regret taking anyone else, trust me.

Took her for lab. She is a very hard grader and if youre 1 min late to class she wont let you in. This can get frustrating sometimes but she really knows what she's talking about and is extremely willing to help you understand. She is the reason I passed my chem lecture.

Dr. Van Huizen is a veyr nice and funny lady. You'll definitely learn a lot from her. Orgo is not way easy but with the extra credit she throws at you every time you'll just have to pass the class. I definitely recommend her.

At first I didn't like her because she seemed rude. But turns out she was just stressed out about finishing content. She is very nice and is willing to help. Drops lowest 2 quizzes but gives a quiz once a week. It helps in the long run so you know info for the exams. Gives extra credit HW and posts powerpoints. I like her!

At first I didn't like her, because I thought she was going to fast. But as soon as I asked for help she was will to answer any questions. Chapter quiz every week. A test every 3 or 4 chtps. extra credit and a lot a practice given all optional. If you do the optional work it'll really help you do well.

She actually teaches but is such a hard grader! You never know what she wants because the lecture and lab instructor are now different teachers. Class is mandatory. Sometimes when she talks to you, she talks down to you.

Van Huizen was my favorite professor and she taught chemistry so well and better than I ever was taught. Do her extra credit it will boost your grade and be sure to go to her for any help. You will be okay with her as long as you pay attention.

Rika was never clear and very strict. Not only did her accent get in the way of my learning but since she went through the material so quickly there was not much time to pick up on things. She also has quizzes every week, which sometimes helps but she is very strict when grading them. Good luck.

She is a very tough grader and very critical when it comes to grading comparing to other chem professors. DO NOT TAKE HER, save yourself and take a different professor. Her quizzes are ridiculous and even when you study she marks off points for the most irrelevant things.

Do not take Van Huizen! She goes through the material way too fast as if people have already learned it & she grades way too tough! I know people who have other chem 121 professors & do not go through the same thing as I did with Van Huzien. She is a nice lady overall but not the best professor. She's a busy lady and it reflects in her teaching.

One 0f the most caring and heartfelt professor's who just happens to teach at a rapid pace and gives many quizzes, tests and home work. Be prepared to work your butt off if you want to pace and take advantage of every tutoring session and office hour.

Van Huizen is tough, she isn't an easy A, you have to work for your grade. There's a ton of quizzes but the quizzes prepare you for the tests. If you don't mind working hard for a good she's worth it.

very helpful if you need help and ask for it. she wants all of her students to pass and understand the material. if you do not put it any effort you will do awful in the class. i struggled at the beginning of the course, but she gives plenty of practice assignments and stays after class to answer any questions. work hard and you will do just fine.

Van Huizen is a great professor and teaches you everything you need to know for the class. She does have an accent, which can be a little difficult in the beginning but you can get used to it. She provides a lot of examples and goes over any questions anyone has. Definitely read the textbook for more clarity and do the practice problems

BEST CHEM PROF FOR LECTURE. For lab she's a little tough plus she is the department head. In her lecture you'll learn more from her than as the other lecturers do not cover the material as fast or clearly and this makes lab easy. Your homework will be used for extra credit and she does care a lot about students. Can be very funny at times.

I had Professor Van Huizen for my Chemistry lab and I learned more from her in that one day, then I did during my lecture with a different professor. Yes, she has an accent it can be tough to understand but she will help with with everything you have trouble understanding. Over all she was a good professor. I ended up dropping because of lecture.

Not necessary to look at the ppts. on blackboard as long as you go to lecture. Just do the practice problems and worksheets on blackboard and you should be able to have a decent grade. If you still don't understand, there is the chem tutoring center that is semi-helpful.

Overall she is pretty clear in her teaching, but not understanding about lateness or absence and is extremely strict when it comes to her rules. One of the hardest graders I have taken so far, mostly everything has to be perfect or you will get points off even with the correct answer. If you are looking for an easy A, don't take this professor.

You will work in this class if Chemistry is not your strength. You will need to spend a lot of outside class time studying and practicing the material. Take her for lab, she's very clear but strict grader. Takes points off for slightest things and that adds up. Quiz on every chapter, tests every 3 chapters. Accent wasn't bad to me, she was clear.

Not a good professor, at all. Rushes through the material, seems annoyed when students have questions. Not very understanding. Tests are very hard for the amount of time you're allowed to spend on them. Decentportion of the class ends up dropping it due to the fact they're failing. She is very smart, but doesn't do a good job teaching her knowledge

If you care about the grade you get and put in a lot of studying you'll be fine. There's a quiz and one homework assignment on every chapter and about 3 exams not including the final. The quizzes are based on the practice problems we do in class and homework so if you study those and actually understand the concepts you'll do well.

In order to keep up with this professor, you will need to practice outside of class. Also, your attendance is very crucial to passing the class. Every class you are building on to what was covered in the previous class so it is very important you go over the material covered in class. There are many study sessions throughout the semester to help.

Very good Chem professor. She's clear in her teaching, and gives plenty of examples that we would see on exams. She's the head of the chem department so thats why I took her. She teaches you everything you need to know for the exams and she makes them so you're fully prepared. If you're planning to be a nurse, do not try to take an easy teacher.

Chem121 won't be easy no matter which professor you have. Van Huizen did a really good job explaining how to do each lab to us, and making sure we knew what we were doing. She always went over the homework during prelab, and gave us all the tools we needed to succeed. Towards the end of the semester she started grading really harshly, though.

She is a good professor, but is a very difficult grader. Despite studying a lot for the first quiz, I got a C because I didn't show enough work (even though the answers were right). Attendance is not taken, but if you don't attend class, you will get lost VERY quickly. You can succeed in her class, but it is definitely no joke!

for an intro. class, this is the most difficult class I have taken in my college career. if you're unfamiliar with chem and not a math person, be ready to be at the tutoring center 24/7, hire private tutor, and/or study minimum 9 hours a week. All answers must be 100% correct, rounding cannot be off by even 1 decimal. very difficult. Timed exams :(

DO NOT TAKE HER! I got the right answer but because I forgot to show one part of my work (I did show most of it just forgot one step) I failed the QUIZ! There are texts every week sometimes she gives more then one QUIZ a week! She gives about 12 mins for each quiz and expects you to show all your work for many problems. GOES FAST! DO NOT TAKE

I absolutely loved her. She teaches with so much passion. I was worried about this class because of all the other ratings but honestly, if you are willing to put in work, you will do fine!! But, when comparing her to another chem professor my friend had for the same class, she had somehow explained much better, which is crazy because she really didnt do a great job at explaining. In the end, I was able to do well by putting in effort

I would NOT recommend her. I have always been an exceptional student but even five hours of studying per night was not enough for this class. She is very unclear and often makes mistakes. Goes SO fast. 94 on the first exam, by the end of the semester I had a 69 average. Somehow passed with a C. Do not take unless you want to hate your life.

Took her my first semester of college and had to withdraw because of how terrible I did. Taking it again this semester and I have an A. YOU HAVE TO STUDY IF YOU TAKE HER CLASS. She is a GOOD teacher. She elaborates on the powerpoints, provides study sessions, and TONS of practice material for quizzes & tests. You will pass if you put time in.

Van Huizen is a good prof and she wants students to pass. She does really well explaining her lectures. The lectures are hard but if you actually study then you'll pass. Go to the SI sessions and go to her office hours. If you won't put in the work, then don't even sign up.

Dr. Van Huizen was not a good Professor at all. She wasnt clear on what she wanted in her post labs. I would try to email her asking her questions but she would never answer the emails. Then she would take off points from the post labs for no apparent reason. I had to work harder in thiS Lab than I did for my Chem lecture.

Overall, she is not a terrible professor but she can be very rude with her snarky comments. Her grading is super tough, if you mess up by putting the wrong significant figures on a calculation or units, she will mark it wrong. For certain topics you will cover, she allots 1-2 minutes for some long calculations, so be aware of that. Practice a lot!

This professor is the worst professor Ive ever had. She grades hard, especially on significant figures throughout the semester. No partial credit on quizzes or homework, if one part is wrong the whole question is wrong. Whenever someone asks a question, she tells them to go to the tutoring center and makes you feel stupid. She is a good professor who gives study guides and tons of practice material on bb. not sure why people on here complain about her taking points off because if your answer is wrong, its wrong and her grading is fair. People rating her poorly are the people failing

attendance not mandatory. drops lowest quiz grade. lowest test grade replaced by final. Gives alot of extra practice problems which are optional. If you study and do all the practice tests and practice problems before tests you will get a good grade, just do not wait until the night before to study. practice tests just like the test, no surprises

I literally changed my major because of this class. She is the worst professor. The whole chem 121 section is ran by her and every professor for chem 121 teaches the same thing. This class is impossible unless you live at the library.

This was the only class I did not get an A this semester. She grades the reports hard so be aware. She was hard to reach by email. The good thing about her though is she will help you out a lot if you ask. She helped me out a lot for Chem lecture which was nice and something she didn't have to do since I was not in her lecture class only the lab.

Chemistry is not an easy course so no matter who you take so you will need to study. I loved her way of teaching as she explained concepts very well. Although, the exams are big but the final technically outweighs everything. She made Chemistry easy for me to understand

Van Huizen was a difficult teacher to have for lab. She is very accessible outside of class, which is nice, but she is a tough grader. She will help you with lecture material after recitation if you ask even if you do not have her. She grades the 2 lab reports very hard and will not let you ask for help. Could be better could be worse.

A lot of people talk down on this professor, but she is actually one of my favorite professors ive ever had. IM TERRIBLE at chemistry, but prof van huizen taught in an effective and efficient way. If you do the homework's, pay attention in class, and study for the tests, this class can easily be passed. All you need to do is put in the effort.

For chemistry in general, you need a lot of practice! She provides a ton of it on blackboard and does practice problems all throughout the lecture. As long as you go over and know how to do all the questions before every quiz and test you will definitely do good. Tests are only a few questions, so make sure you know the information solidly.

Ima be honest.. Did not like her! Like she's a nice professor and explains things okay but she literally does not want to give a student a perfect score. She literally goes out of her way to find something to take points off on. And she talks a lot loool like she will have you sitting in lecture longer than you need to be

I am a transfer student, and I will say she is one of the best lab professors at Towson. She does a great job explaining things. I disagree with what people say that she is a tough grader, she is not. She cares about her students and makes sure we understand the material. I would definitely take her again in the future.

I am a terrible student and somehow she was the only prof who could explain chemistry to me in depth. I had her for lec and whenever i went to lab (another prof), only van huizen students would understand what's happening in lab, that shows a lot. She answers question thoroughly and is actually nice during office hours, i would take her again.

I was nervous reading her ratings and a lot were true. Chem is already super hard and the fact that shes the head of the department makes the class even harder. You have to put in the work. She can make you feel dumb sometimes. Ive never felt so stupid in my life before this class!! And shes a tough grader!!! Shes hard but she knows her stuff

She isnt the worst but she certainly isnt the best. She lectures very fast and expects you to pick up everything in 5 minutes. YOU MUST STUDY. There are SO many quizzes but she drops the lowest one. She doesnt use blackboard so you have to beg for your grade or add it up yourself. She made me feel like crap when i went to her office hours.

As long as you do all of the homework and the practice problems you will be fine. She does not curve anything, but she drops one homework and one quiz. She is a very good lecturer and gives many practice problems to ensure you understand the material.

All the reviews saying that she is terrible are the people who didn't work for their grade. She's a nice professor who's straight to the point and that's what I liked most about her. Attend class, take good lecture notes and study. Everything on the test will be taught in lecture. she's very strict with test policies but I would take her again.

She is a nice person outside of class but is a really bad teacher. Homework doesn't count towards anything and tests and quizzes are timed. She goes too fast and when the withdrawal period was close 2/3 of class dropped. Would recommend you take another teacher if you want to pass.

Dr van huizen really does care about the success of her students. You have to work for your grade and study a lot, but that comes with any health profession science class. She is great at explaining things and provides lots of resources. I would definitely recommend taking her!

Come to class if you want to pass! There is so much to learn. If you attend class, do the homework, and review your notes, you are likely to pass. She is a tough grader and wants you to understand the concepts perfectly. All pre-nursing students should also take the conversion unit very seriously. It is very important.

She is very good at teaching the content. TURN IN HOMEWORK ON TIME and PRINT OUT EVERY LECTURE PACKET. If you don't understand things you should do review or go to her. As long as you go to class you should be able to pick up the material easily. Final replaces lowest test grade, but you should do well on the final if you did well all semester.

Van Huizen is a good professor. However, she is an extremely picky grader. Make sure to have your units for your answers. She also does a lot of examples of problems to make sure you understand the concept. If next semester is not online then you'll have to memorize a lot of formulas and conversions. You don't need the textbook to pass the class.

Professor Van Huizen is very straightforward with the material and you will have to put in a lot of time studying outside of class. If youre good about attendance and homework the class shouldnt be a problem.

Dr Van Huizen is definitely a tough cookie. I HIGHLY recommend attending the TA study sessions and doing practice problems before each test and you will be fine. Do EVERYTHING as she says. Do NOT stress it though, she is a pretty good professor, so just take notes, do practice problems, and you will be good!

Professor formats class in a way that is nearly impossible to understand, she requires you to turn in literally everything handwritten, including YOUR notes. She lacks empathy, and responds without emotional intelligence/care for others. She is dismissive and treats her class as a review instead of an introductory course. Nonetheless, she is smart

Professor Van Huizen is amazing! She is brutally honest sometimes but definitely a solid professor. She offers extra credit and drops your lowest quiz grade which is extremely helpful. The reviews saying she wasn't good were the ones that did not pay attention or slacked off. Just pay attention and attend class and you should be good!

She is very intelligent, and clear in her standards. With that being said, she doesn't hold herself to the same standards that she holds her students. She also is too strict (for me personally to have any luck learning). She jokes about curing anxiety with peppermint? As someone with mental illness, she lacks interpersonal skills and is insensitive

She lacks empathy, yet expects us to give her the easy pass when she makes mistakes every single time. There is no partial credit given when taking quizzes or assessments, its either you get the full points or none (for each question). To do well in this class, make sure to retain all the material learned throughout the semester.

Worst professor I have ever had. She is not understanding at all, does not give enough time for quizzes or exams. Avoid her at all cost. Made the class harder than it had to be. I am in the course now and only a month in already failing. She told us the class average was a 40% on a quiz, then after retaking it the average was a 50%. She's the worst

Professor Van Huizen is a great instructor & provides a lot of practice work. She goes over examples in lecture and provides study sessions before quizzes. As long as you do the practice you should do well. The quizzes are straight forward. The students that complain are the ones that dont put in the work.

Don't let the reviews scare you! Professor Van Huizen is actually a really nice person the course is just really difficult. She is really strict on cheating and makes things more difficult so that students won't cheat. There are weekly quizzes, Study guides, and other assignments that will bring up your grade. This class takes a lot of studying!

Van Huizen is a great professor. She provides extra videos for students to watch prior to class so that they can form ideas and questions. She takes the time to answer questions if students have any. This course requires a good amount of studying and practice. If you study and apply yourself, then you'll honestly be fine.

Just a mess. I would never take her again. She did give assignments for extra credit and does drop grades. But the amount of work that is assigned to get to that point is ridiculous. Worst experience ever, quizzes were timed to less than 2 mins per problems. Book was not required but is helpful and a tutor. Good luck if you have her you'll need it.

A lot of people do not like Van Huizen, but if I'm being honest I believe it is because they did not care to pay attention and/or are severely lazy. She is a great professor, whose lectures I enjoy and understand clearly. Just pay attention, do the practice work and you should be good. Just try your best and that should honestly be enough.

Professor Van Huizen is a pretty good professor and gives many opportunities to drop lower grades and to be given extra credit. Many may think she's difficult but if you attend class, pay attention, and study you will do great.
