Extremely difficult teacher. His explanations of difficult material were very unclear. He gave tests that required one to use every single time-saving trick possible in order to even finish in time. Only 3 out of 29 people in my class passed (and with just C's). You have been warned.
I think I am going to die. He is so boring. And he way he test is just on very hard part of the book so you have to know everything or you will fail. He likes tricky questions. His grading sucks
You can go to class and know nothing, he talks to the board, and is hard to understand,he grades in the modorate to hard area, and tests very hard with tricky questions. Will fail anyone, isn't helpful in getting help outside of class, not good at explaining anything after asked a ques. Don't take unless you have time to do 15-30 hw pbs a night.
Overall material explanation is ok, but he seems to get lost explaining the details. Now his tests are a whole other subject alone. The tests are too long to finish unless you are a genius and know every little detail in each section. If you want to be challenged and are a math major then take the class, if not I advise to take someone else.
This man is evil!!! His test are extremely long. You will fail his class regardless of your understanding of the materials. The tests do reflect material covered in class, but you have no hope of completing them unless you started Cal in grade school. I am scoring way above the class average on tests, and I am still failing. No scaling.
Does not mind failing the entire class.
This professor is not for the faint at heart, however it is possible to pass. I passed his class with an A, but was one of the few to pass. His test are long and hard but again are they can be done. He is very smart and expects everyone to catch on quickly and remember all previous cal classes. He also explains things well, just sit up front!
Very difficult teacher. I made a C in his class and worked pretty hard for it. I don't think much of the class (after half dropped it) passed at all. However, I found he explained things clearly and I learned A LOT in the class. The tests are fair and representative of material covered, but they are very HARD and LONG.
Not a class for the slacker who thinks he can pass without studying. Zou knows his material very well. His tests are very challenging and cover too much material for the time given to take the test. Study EVERY section thoroughly. You have to do your homework and go to every class to PASS. Don't take the class if you don't have a lot of time.
He has no idea what he is doing, saying, or teaching
He is very hard and doent matter if all the class fails. His test are to long for the time. He doent want to listen to the class about the test, he just doent care
I can not understand what he is saying in class and is not good at explaining mathematical ploblems.
This guy does not speak clearly. He does not do enough examples. I havem't learned much in class. I have had to go home&study the book&CAPA to even learn a little. You have to be good in math to do well?! Do not take this class! I wish I would have dropped the class at the beginning! Emailed him about class&he told me to visit help center.
Zou is a very smart person, may be to smart to be teaching MA 102. He makes math harder than what it it is. He doesn't speak clearly and does examples directly from the book. But, his test are ok and many of the questions are from the examples from the board and his quiz the week before. You can learn more from a tutor that Dr. Zou, get a tutor.
He is the WORST math teacher I have ever had!! If you ask for help on capa he will tell you to go to the capa lab. He teaches directly from the the book, and will not do capa problems in class. If you ask for any kind of help in class about what he puts on board he will tell you no! He made me not want to even come to class. DO NOT TAKE!!!!!
This class was awful!!! Zou cant speak good English and cant comprehend what students say. If you ask him a question he will just ignore you. He does no examples and doesnt explain the material at all! The only good part about this class is that he scaled capa and our final grade. Still was a horrible experience( but thats the UAB sucky math dept!)
Do Not take this class with this teacher unless you want to repeat Math 102 again!!!!!!!
This guy is nice, but a horrible teacher. His explanations leave huge gaps because he assumes we know things that aren't in the prereqs. He laughs at students who ask questions. He creates a hostile classroom environment, where students are either stressed or half-asleep. Avoid him if you want to learn.
Very hard to understand
Solution: Alright Okay, so, good professor. I take practice test 3 time (maybe 4) and I did well on tests. You need not be concerned about this class's difficulty. Very approachable individual and has a pleasant demeanor. Also, quite the comedian.
Great professor, very helpful in class, clearly has vested interests in his students well-being. But take practice tests 3 times...maybe 4, for it is the key to success in the course.
Worst teacher ever. Cannot understand what he is saying and does not explain things. He does not answer questions either. Avoid if you can!!!
alrightokay...not the best teacher. while zou is friendly and even has a good sense of humor, his speech is not very clear and he can easily lose most students. in his math class you pretty much teach yourself from the homework. don't expect to learn very much by going to class, unless you're especially math inclined.
This was the worst teacher for math. He was very difficult to understand and took little interest in his student's understanding. I had more trouble with this teacher than I have ever had in a math class. If you can avoid him, please do! If you must take him, at least have had a calculus class before. You will learn little from this class.
Lectures are a total waste of time. The student can read verbatim what the book says too. A teacher that could clearly interperet what the book is saying would have been beneficial. Take his class if no other option is available, but be prepared to teach yourself the material through course compass.
I had to take this class, unfortunately. He has a thick asian accent and pronounces words weird. He says "alright okay" about 100 times per class. I never paid attention once...in fact I am on RMP now instead of paying attention. The study guides prepare you well for the exams though. I would not recommend this...it is painfully boring to endure.
abandon all hope, ye who enter!
Teacher is very smart, but unable to communicate his knowledge. You will learn more with the ON-Line program than by going to class. He won't give you credit to come to class. You can spend your time wisely by going to the library to go over your homework. Class can be painful.
His class was really hard. Statistics is supposedly hard anyhow, but he made it unbearingly so. I coudln't understand a word he said. And he spent a good amount of class chasing down students who tried to leave the class early.
I personally like the guy. He's friendly and tries to help but usually misunderstands when his students ask questions.Pretty much everything he teaches can be read from the textbook but attending class can help to clarify some things you might not understand. He laughs alot so don't be offended if it seems like he's laughing at you. Nice guy though
Terrible teacher, do not take him. I'm taking the final tomorrow and I feel terribly underprepared. Our class test averages in class were all below 60. More than half of the students who attended this class dropped it.
Took Zou for Cal 125 and hated it. He is hard to understand, and not just because of his think accent, he explains concepts wrong. Pay attention to board work, he makes mistakes. Many surprise quizzes that usually cover old material, so review old homework. One good thing is that he is much better in his office at explaining, so make time to go.
This guy has a 1.9 rating and he is still teaching at UAB. Why has he not been fired! Horrible teacher
I love this guy.
Okay, so, this guy is not a good teacher, alright? Terrible accent, unclear, mistakes on boardwork, difficult tests, and horrible teaching style. DON'T TAKE HIS CLASS!
He is a great guy, a little hard to understand (his accent). But if you dont get it in class, he will always be willing to help you outside of class. He gives lots of quizzes and homework to help your grade (if you make an A on the exam, you make an A in the class)
Very thick Chinese accent and almost no partial credit. He knows what he's doing but he's bad at teaching others how to do it.
He gives very little partial credit on his tests! He also marked one of my answers wrong on a test even though I had the correct answer! Then after 5 mins of arguing he gave me half the points for a correct answer! I am happy I am changing majors so I can drop this class!
Counts off for right answers if they're not expressed exactly how he wants them to be. No partial credit whatsoever. Lecture is not much more helpful than reading out of the book. Does not seem to care if students pass or fail; heard rumors that he tries to make as many students drop as possible, so he has less papers to grade.
I would be better off spending an hour reading the textbook than sitting through this class. If he didn't take attendance I would literally never come. All he does is lecture from the book and in a very thick accent. I don't mind accents but I do mind when a prof goes through absolutely no effort to actually lecture. Don't take him if you can avoid
I've never worked harder in a class in my many years in school only to fail. I strongly suggest not taking his class even if it's your last resort. He knows how to do math, but has no idea how to explain concepts. He expects you to understand and will embarrass you if you don't. Class averages have been very low with no way to redeem ourselves.
I actually loved having him. He has a heavy accent, but his lectures and notes are clear and organized. Definitely a tough grader, but straightforward. Reading the book helped, but he's a clear lecturer.
Zou teaches in the weirdest way and the only reason I'm passing his class is because of my high school notes from last year. The only good thing about him is that he gives bonus quizzes if the test scores average low. The biggest issue with him is that he doesn't post grades online. Don't buy the textbook, but buy the webassign code.
Dr. Zou is a good person who means well. His exams are difficult but it's what to be expected of a college calculus class. His lectures can be a bit confusing but if you do the work and study little by little then you'll be fine on exams. Attendance is worth 12% of your grade so it's in your best interest to show up even if you find it boring.
Dr. Zous class was awful. It was very difficult and you can barely hear or understand him. His tests are super hard.
I am so miserable in this class. He doesn't care for the subject of the students, even if no one understands it is somehow still the classes fault. Wanna ask a question? He will laugh in your face and even yell if in a bad mood. He hasn't even tried, I went to the head of the department yet no action is taken, its a joke.
Dr. Zou is intelligent, but I think he does have issues with his delivery when teaching the class. Sometimes, he will skip steps when presenting problems on the board, and this can cause confusion within the class. He does lecture, but to me it wasn't very helpful. His exams are much harder than the practice exams that are in the test bank online.
Dr. Zou is not the worst, but I would be lying if I said he was effective at getting material across to his students. If hes not staring out into space for a random amount of time, hes randomly leaving the room. His accent is something one can get past, but his teaching skills are lackluster at best.
Very confusing lectures, doesn't proof any formulas and gives very poor examples in class, when asked a question he tends to laugh instead of answering, he also gives little to no partial credit and has marked correct answers wrong before. He randomly leaves class and stares off into space, I wouldn't recommend. I don't feel prepared for Cal II.
Dr. Zou has to be one of the worst professors I have ever had. An average lecture consists of messily introducing a section, beginning an example that is extremely difficult to follow, staring off into space for at least 15 seconds, then expecting the class to solve problems from that section. Homework is dreadful and almost impossible to solve.
Youre better off watching YouTube videos online to learn the material. Study old tests from the Calculus Testbank online and write as much as possible on your notecard/cheat sheet. Homework is pretty straight forward. Go to the VMASC for tutoring rather than his office hours. We had to write down our names but idk if participation is a grade.
Not a hard class if youre strong in core math subjects like Algebra and Geometry. His accent makes it hard to understand sometimes so the book is helpful. Will give bonus quiz if the class does bad on a test and he has a tendency to introduce material right before the test so that sucks.
Zou does his best to teach, but is extremely difficult to understand because of his teaching techniques and accent. He is very inconsistent with his grading, and does not give much partial credit. He is difficult to go to for help, as he will often not fully understand what you are asking. The lectures are long and excessively complicated.
During this COVID-19 epidemic we are moved to online for the rest of semester. if you are ok with looking at a ppt and a teacher reading word for word from it take this class if you want a deeper annotated powerpoint or explanation dont take this class his class follows as such. sloppily stumbling through examples and writing random formulas.
He doesn't care if you succeed in this class. He is rude and mean and will laugh at you for asking for help. He yelled at a student in front of the whole class once. When we struggled going online during COVID (because he just talked into the camera for two hours) he refused to show any compassion and laughed at us for saying we were struggling.
Dr. Zou is very difficult. In class, he would teach and then every other day there would be a pop quiz that we would fail. Ever since we moved to online, his lectures are just him reading a math ppt w/ numbers that had no work. Barely responds to emails. Doesn't put grades in until last min. no extra credit. gave ONE bonus quiz out of 4 test.
Zou is overall a nice guy. But, in my opinion is not a good professor. Asking questions is nearly impossible because he constantly misunderstands what you are asking and answers something completely unrelated to the question. If you want to pass Cal1, do NOT take Zou. You have to essentially teach yourself the ENTIRE class.
I dont know who needs to hear this, but dont take this guy. Just save your mental health and wait to take the class with another professor. Dr. Zou doesnt care about you. If you have a problem, hell laugh at you. Youve got to be a CIA agent to untangle the crime that is his lectures. Simply the most awful professor Ive ever seen.
His class was terrible. He didnt explain things well and when you would ask a question he wouldnt answer it he would give some other random answer. He took forever to put grades in and unless you calculated your grade you wouldnt know your final grade until your transcript came out with the letter grade.
I would not recommend. Lecture is difficult to understand, and it is even more difficult to get in contact with him. Tests are difficult, and he is not approachable or friendly.
He grades his homework based on accuracy and gives little to no feedback even when requested.
Is definitely the worst Calculus teacher. He is inconsiderate, rude, and incoherent when it comes to teaching, and this is not only my pov, my whole class felt the same way. The entire class consistently made bad grades on exams and he never did anything for us. Take anybody else.
He has a very poor skill in technology. During zoom, even when the camera is not working, he still keep teaching.
Do NOT take him at all. This man will leave class at random times and not even solve problems on the board because simply just does not want to. He will run through sections and not even bother explaining it at all. DO NOT TAKE him. Take anyone else otherwise you will have to rely on self-studying and tutors.
Dr. Zou is a nice person once you get to meet him, but his quizzes that he has at the end of class are what has ruined cal 1 for me. He gives no test corrections and does not have any easy way to get points. You must work for everything.
Would recommend any other professor for math. I took dual enrollment precal and passed with a 98, but somehow he made calculus impossible to learn. He speeds through lecture and assumes that we have already learned stuff. Pop quizzes every week. The class was uncomfortable asking questions and he rarely explained things.
He literally doesn't teach. He just says random stuff and does problems on the board. He doesn't explain concepts like he should. You are better off putting in earbuds in his mandatory lecture and watching khan academy videos. If you need this credit, he is a good grader, so just study yourself and DO THE PRACTICE TESTS FROM TEST BANK!!!!!!
He doesn't understand what we ask him and gets frustrated when we don't understand concepts.
If you have a choice, do not take a course with this professor. He does not teach and assumes you already know the content. He spends his lectures explaining calculus in the most round about way. His lectures are worthless and straight out of the textbook, and he does pop quizzes usually every week. There is an attendance grade.
I have never failed a class in my life and before this class had a 3.5 GPA studying Mechanical Engineering. It took 30 days to get our first test results. He got confused reviewing problems from test and would just skip them. If there is any other option, DO NOT TAKE Dr. Zou. I feel confident I would have been able to pass with any other instructor
Dr. Zou is not very patient and tends to get upset when students are confused even though he explains things in an unclear way. He does not give feed back and it really feels like he is not on your side during the course, it's him vs. the world. I was eager to learn calculus this semester and he crushed that.
I went into this class wanting to learn Cal 2 after doing a Calculus summer classes at another school where I always maintained around a 3.8 Gpa overall average. But I was barely able to learn anything from the professor. He gives out so much work to the point where taking the class and working at the same time is not possible.
Zou is easily the worst professor/teacher of any subject I have ever had (as a post-bacc student I have had many) and gave me my first C ever. It's concerning that an institution like UAB could have such an incredibly terrible prof. He changes deadlines without warning, gives pop quizzes on material he hasn't explained, and even curves grades down.
Overall, a horrible professor. Fell asleep in class multiple times during quizzes and gave an "exit ticket" off of what we learned in class that day, the problem being I didn't know what we learned because of the thick accent and my need to have a tutor for 6 hours a week to learn what is going on in the course. Do not take under any circumstances.
Just watch the supplementary math course or organic chemistry tutor. Don't even bother trying to learn from his lectures.
Constantly making mistakes when explaining questions.
No lecture notes, no schedule, no recorded lectures, gets agitated when a question is asked during lecture, does 3 practice problems fast and moves on, quiz every week, assignments due after quiz but are on that quiz, doesn't answer emails whatsoever, when asked about a practice exam, he said he doesn't know what the exam is like, it looked same.
Amazing professor.
Absolutely amaz-awful.
Terrible professor.
He doesn't stop saying sigma.
He never answers questions.
His class is passable, that's it.
If you need someone to help you learn go to a tutor or another math teacher. Incorrectly weighs grades in canvas so you need to calculate it yourself to know what you actually have. Will fall asleep and snore while you are taking quizzes or tests. Lectures are hard to follow. Basically teach yourself.
Covers barely any material that will be on tests, very difficult lecturer to follow in-class. Will ask, "Do you guys have any questions?" If we ask a question he will then just get mad and yell at you. You are better off just watching the supplementary math modules on canvas. He also takes forever to grade. 3 exams, final, and 32 home works.
Zou was the worst professor I've ever had. Not only does he not offer partial credit on quizzes and very limited partial credit on tests, but he also gets easily angered by questions and explanations on content "taught" in class. In addition to this, he doesn't respond to emails. All in all, get a tutor and teach yourself if you want to pass.
One of the Professors of all time.
He didn't even have his syllabus finished on the first day of class. Half of the people dropped out mid lecture.
Avoid at all costs.
The worst professor I've had so far.
The only reason I have a B.
help me please
Ohhhhhh, professor Zou. I am extremely mad at myself for not switching over to Wickman's 4 days a week 8 am lectures. I thought to myself, "He can't be that bad of a professor", "Surely UAB wouldn't let someone who seems to have such terrible reviews maintain a teaching position for so long, right?". Boy oh boy was I wrong. DONT TAKE HIS CLASS!!!!!
Zou is emphatically the worst professor Ive ever had. He doesn't answer emails, or follow the syllabus, when you ask questions in class he yells, when no one answers questions he pitches fits, he doesn't grade assignments in a reasonable amount of time, and he is incredibly hard to follow during lectures. The fact he still has a job is a miracle.
The world would be a better place if he didn't exist. Thats it honestly.
If I could rate a zero I would. Zou is not only the worst professor I've ever had, he's one of the worst educators I've encountered in my life thus far. He's condescending, unapproachable, and utterly useless in helping students understand the material. Taking his class felt like academic sabotage. Avoid at all cost if possible.
hey chat zou literally just got demoted and is now having to teach precalculus so anyone taking calc ii/iii next fall w/ him check your schedule planner to see your new professor!
