Does not grade homework. Goes through the course fairly quick. Can be hard to understand. Class is based on primarily exam scores
Great professor who expect you to work. All the problems he tested were from book, so we have to do the homework. He requires the attendance, so you can learn more in class.
Very knowledgeable teacher. Can't understand him very well. He needs to take an english speaking course and pass it before he's allowed to teach math in the U.S. again. Nice guy, but don't take math 115 or 116 with him if you want a good grade
Material is fairly easy if you attend class. Grades mostly on quiz and exam scores, gives extra credit occasionally. Very willing to help out, but a bit difficult to understand until you get used to him. Nice guy.
The course was challenging but beneficial. He gave you more chances such as quizzes, worksheets, and tests. You have to show work in his tests. You will not survive if you do not work hard. He has better knowledge than those teachers who pass you easily.
hard to understand at first. hard class, keep up w/ the hw quiz every fri. almost perfect attedence gives like 30 extra points on the exam.
hes nice but very hard to understand. the only grades you basically have are tests and quizzes maybe 1-2 worksheets. if you are not good at tests dont take him if you want a good grade. DO THE HOMEWORK he takes the test questions right from there.
Nice guy, but he can be hard to understand if you've never had a foreign professor. Never grades homework. All grades are from tests and quizzes. I'm pretty good at math, but I almost got a C in the class.
if you speek english only dont take his class
He copies the ex problems out of the book and then just puts those on the board for class. He then will mess up the problem and have to go back. He is very hard to understand when he talks. Go to class and do the hmwk and you will do ok.
Bad News Bears
Can't understand him. He confuses people when he tries to do questions on the board. Better have a good background in calculus before you take him because he won't teach you anything. You'll end up teaching yourself out of the book.
This guy is hilarious, his attempts to pronounce some english words are funny as hell. If your good at following problems, this class is easy. Tests and quizes are somewhat difficult, but if you know what your doing you'll be fine. He tends to cough alot, why, I don't know.
What did he say?
He uses powerpoints to teach and does not speak very clear english. Tests are okay
A pretty good teacher, his accent isn't too bad once your used to it. I recommend him, he is a very nice guy. Class will challenge you but it won't drive you crazy.
Dude, seriosly...math = know english. know your matierial or GTFO. Hes cool and helpful... communication is diffucult. Attendance policy is fierce too.
You can't understand this guy!
LEARN ENGLISH!!
Should only difficult if you are new to calc. Tests are very representative of what the book covers, sometimes taken exactly from it. Dropped his attendance policy after midterms. I had no trouble with his accent, and enjoyed many of his pronunciations. "Any qwastions?"

what did he just say....learn english
He helped me whenever I asked but sometimes I could not understand WTF he was saying or trying to say! He grades fair but always stands in front of what hewrite on the board and erases while he writes! Very annoying!

WOW!! LEARN ENGLISH!!
Worst teacher I have ever had, and I've had some bad ones. I heard better english from uneducated foreign military personel, that I have dealt with while serving in military. Hengli skips steps in math and when combined with his english, makes math that is easy into near impossable task. Get a tuter, and cross your fingers.
HARD CLASS. lots of notes. thick accent. STUDY STUDY STUDY! he is helpful though and always willing to answer questions.
i hate this guy; on top of not understanding him, he goes through material very fast, stay away from him if you can; worst teacher i've had yet
this class sux! he is hard to understand and stands in front of the chalk board so you can't see!
in this class you have to study. you cant understand half the words he says. i passed with a B+ but i studied my ass off. many people in my class failed or dropped out. he needs to return to china!
If you are good at math, he's an ok teacher to have. If your not don't take him. You have to do your homework to pass this class
Unbelievably horrible. Once you get past his thick Korean accent, you realize that he doesn't explain anything, he skips vital steps because it's "obvious," and he's just plain bad. Worst math teacher I've ever had.
What was the math department at Ferris thinking when they hired this guy? Get ready for a miserable life if you take Hengli. I could easily write a novel on how terrible of a teacher he is. What a waste of my money and my time. Learn English!!! Don't skip steps!!! Ferris State wake up, and fire this guy!!!!!!!!!!!!!
He does stand in front of the chalk board so you cant see. He skips steps all the time and somehow always finds a way to prevent you from getting everything right on a quiz or test. Very difficult to understand. If you need a language class take this one because you will learn to speek korean.
Are you supposed to study to get a good grade? I am not sure why people here always want to get a good grades without study. If you do not study in his class you will fail. His tests are fair. His grading is very strict.
He simply wants you to work. Do not listen to those people, only those retarded expect to get easy grades without studying. He sometimes can be hard to understand, but he usually is very clear.
Just Great. He cares.
He is a very nice professor. I liked his teaching style. He hates lazy students.
He really is a good proof, although he has his flaws. At first, it's hard to understand his accent, but you get used to it after awhile. He's allright, idk if I'd recommend him or not though.
His accent is a **** to understand. if u have background in math, you'll be fine.
You get out of this class what you put into it. This was a double paces class, and I got a B. He is helpful if you are a good student and apply yourself.
Course is semi-difficult. But his tests are EASY. Just write down every single step and you'll at least get a B even if your answer is wrong. Accent makes it quite hard to understand him sometimes though. Also if you ask questions in class, he makes you feel kinda stupid. but i dont think he means to.
Accent sucks. Helpfulness sucks, refers you to a tutor. Makes you feel stupid if you ask a question. No humor. Not an easy class unless you are a genious and you MUST do your work or you're guarenteed to screw up in his class. I would strongly recommend choosing another professor.
this guy is the worst professor i have ever had. period.
this guy is the north korean terrorist much like kim scott ill...they might be brothers not to mention a column or row is an "ass row" and "**** column" and a corollary is a calorie and he chokes on chalk once in awhile. what a terrible teacher.
I had no intrest in math before this class, but I feel that I learned a lot from this guy and now I actually LIKE math. yes he has an accent and stands in front of the board, btw, his class is not hard if you put some effort into studying and show up ready to take notes.
He was not helpful, and never took time to make sure we understood the information, he just wrote it up on the board expecting we knew EVERYTHING. Plus he didn't speak very good english so that made it harder to understand.
gosh.... never take this professor. and i am sorry for those math majors that have to suffer through his class. people may like his class but i hated it. i worked so hard for a C+ and was he not that helpful. people retake classes and get better grades, however, there were some people who took his class and got the same grade.
Don't take him unless you have to. You understand a word he says or for that matter what he writes. If you don't know the material you have to teach yourself. Avoid him at all costs, it's a waste of your money.
Hard to understand. Decent teacher besides that. I would not reccomend him however.
Hengli Jiao is a horrible professor that expects the student to know everything before coming into class. He thinks that we already know all of the material. If we did, why would we be in the class? To make things worse, he has a horrible accent and horrible writing. You can't read what he writes on the board. DO NOT TAKE CLASS! SAVE YOUR MONEY!
Worst teacher I have EVER had in my life! You can't understand a word he says, you can't understand what he writes on the board, he expects you to know everything before you walk into the class and speeds through the information like we are all geniuses. DO NOT TAKE HIM! He is a completely useless teacher!
He was almost impossible to understand and his handwriting is terrible. When people asked questions, he acted like they were stupid and a waste of time. NEVER take him! I am usually a B student in math, and I had to work extra hard to even pass his tests. Trust me, his classes are a waste of money, unless you are already a genius in math.
His accent is hard to get past, but once you do...you realized he does know what he's talking about..he just donesn't know how to teach it! I would not recommend him. He doesnt make sense, he is not willing to help you, and he talks to you like you are stupid. Don't Take Him!
Hengli is the man. I like this guy. His accent isn't bad after a day of it. He does expect you to work for your grade, which isn't a bad thing. I have him for Diffy Q, and I got 100 on the first test. If you do your homework, and really work at it, his quizzes and tests are easy! If you don't love math, don't take Hengli; he'll eat you alive :)
He is pretty tough and very nitpicky with his grading. I dont recommend taking him, unless you get stuck with him, like me. He doesnt speak very good english, but its not as bad as some people say. Make sure you take notes and do the optional hw if you want to do good on the quiz/test
Easy class if you've had trig and upper level math before but don't expect to get much actual "teaching" from him. He stands in front of the board and has broken English at times. Not recommended to take him earlyish in the morning b/c you will opt to stay in bed instead of going to class. Easy tests and no homework though.
He is a great guy, always willing to give extra help. Struggles with english but very explainitory. Attendance isnt mandatory, show up for tests and quizes. very easy class.
don't take a class with this man. you learn nothing and you can't understand him. it's like he's having a conversation with a colleague. His english is poor and there is nothing to take away from this class.
Absolutely terrible! teacher. I would never recommend taking him. His english is bad, half the time the class can't understand him. And getting out of class at the scheduled time? Happens rarely. He keeps you after and keeps talking. Do NOT take this professor.
He knows what he is talking about, however it takes a while o get used to way he teaches. It is a little hard to understand him, but he's a very helpful and organized teacher. He lets you know what is on the tests/quizzes.
This man is so hard to understand. He doesn't explain very well and his online quizzes weekly are AWFUL! His teaching style is weird, if you have no background on Calculus, DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS! I ended up withdrawing from this course.
If you can't do algebra, look for another teacher. I can do algebra, so I used this class to prop up my GPA. Not bad if you can figure out the concepts. This is college. It's supposed to be a little difficult.
Horrible!!!! I got a 33 on my math ACT and you'd think I got a 5 with how little I understood. Terrible accent and HORRIBLE teacher!!!!!!!!! Almost changed my math major so I wouldn't have to take any more classes with this guy!!
=[ =[ not just one frowny, but two... Difficult accent to understand. Not helpful with answering students questions, very belittling and flat out rude at times. He's the only teacher that offered this class, so I didn't really have a say in the matter, but if I did, I would've avoided like the plague.
Difficult class. Hard to sit through his class, b/c he makes mistakes a lot & stands in front of the notes. Realized near the end, if you go to his office with questions he will make sure you understand what you will be tested on. Grade consists of four 100 pt exams, plus he usually offers an extra credit take home when everyone bombs the 3rd test.
STAY AWAY. Barely speaks english, stands directly in front of the notes he is writing on the board, and he is flat out rude to our class saying, "even 3rd graders do better than this." We went over multiple sect. in a single class, he makes everything so much harder than is and you will NEVER use the book so don't bother carrying it around with you
Not a good teacher at all. You can't use a calculator, which is why I did not do well in his class.
I understood him just fine, but others had trouble. He is helpful if you ask. Hw is optional.Attendance is 4orless.He is not always clear on some things he teaches, which causes confusion on test/quiz. NO CALCULATORS!Overall, hes an okay professor!
HORRIBLE professor. This man understands his subject but just blows right over anything he thinks you should understand already. Notes are useless as he does not explain what he does. Lecture is basically him doing problems with little explanation. Attendance is mandatory but lecture is of little assistance.
Writes super small on the board, doesn't explain anything. Makes mistakes on the board constantly. Very poor english & hard quizzes and tests. Doesn't allow calculators.
I'd rather have my balls bit off by a badger than endure this class again. Yes he has an accent, but that's not what makes him a bad teacher. Care for students:0. Teaching talent:0. Expectations: through the roof.
Horrible class. No calculators allowed. Tests are so difficult and he is hard to understand. Math SLA helped quite a bit though.
auto fail after 3 absences. Attnded every day, went to tutoring, went to his office, did all homework + and studied. got a D. Tests aren't hard just long, 50 minute 3 page tests, 6 page exam. writes problems straight from book no exp. 1 online quiz per night, 3hr min only for first test to meet reqs. after that no feed back on work.
He was the worst professor I have had.
This was the absolute worst class I have ever taken. Tests never lined up with textbook or anything else. He graded tough, and had me in tears numerous time over the course. I don't recommend him to anyone. If you're in the class drop out immediately. Not personable, and often says rude things. He kills your GPA and confidence along with it.
if you want to pass do not take him. Doesn't explain things all. Literally talks at you the whole 50 mins. SLA does help but still a very hard class, very difficult to understand him. I have no clue how he still has a job there. Don't choose him.
This is the worst class that I have ever taken. I advise no one to ever take this class.
THE WORST class I have ever taken. He hardly speaks English and doesn't allow calculators. He does problems the entire 50 minutes but doesn't actually teach you how to do them.
He is so freaking horrible! He doesn't explain anything and you don't get to use calculators and he give you huge numbers thay take forever. If you want to be taught do not take him
Do not take this class. I read the comments and was like people are just over exaggerating I can handle it. I couldn't. This class was a joke, he never taught he just did problems all lecture expecting us to understand the answers. Test questions are 10 times more difficult then lecture problems too. Avoid him if you want to pass, trust me.
Dr. Jaio will meet with you outside of class hours and help you as long as you put the effort in. His class is mostly lecture, which works well for me. Take good, in class, notes and do the homework and you will pass.
This is the worst professor I have ever had. He does not explain things very well and when he does he second guesses what he's saying. If you don't know exactly what your doing don't bother righting it on the test. He does not give partial credit.
Terrible. I had to drop this class. Talks much too fast, will give one example of an important test problem and will rush through without asking if anyone has questions and will not go into detail unless asked. Assumes you already know everything.
His accent isn't too bad if you actually try to understand him, but he does speed through his lectures. He goes over everything on the exams and all of the homework is weighted the same as the quizzes. If you pay attention, take good notes, and do your work you'll be fine. Same w/ every class you have to be there and participate to pass.
Worst professor I've ever had. I like to think of myself as pretty good at math, but I have never felt more lost in a class. He's very unclear on what he wants to say, and very hard to understand. If you get an answer right on a test, but don't do it the way he wants he takes points off. Absolutely awful, DO NOT TAKE HIM.
Worst math instructor I've ever had. His accent is understandable but he will spend 30 secs explaining the core of the topic at hand and the rest of the time quickly jumping from on problem to another without explanation. I've never felt more lost than I have in this class. Entire class fails a quiz and he shrugs and says study more.
First of all do not listen to the people on here giving him a positive rating as they are probably math geniuses. If you are average or below average at math then you will struggle big time. He goes through problems the entire lecture but does not show you at all how to do them. There are quizzes every week and the exams are quite difficult.
goes very fast through lectures, doesn't go over homework questions or explain things in class, doesn't review for tests in class at all, our class average is a 62% currently at the end of the semester, on tests if you don't have every single thing right on a problem it's all wrong, trust me, do not take a class with him
In order to get an A in the class you only need a 90%, he let us retake every test except for the first one (But he grades harder on the take home test). Worth taking!
Worst teacher possible at Ferris don't take his class his accident is very hard to understand. He's goes to fast and could care less if his students pass his class
Heavy accent, harsh grader.
Worst Professor I have ever had. Difficult to understand, course material was tough.
This class was difficult for me and hard to understand. To pass you'll be doing homework for this class almost every night and there's quizzes in class all the time. DON'T MISS CLASS!!
He's actually a very good teacher and his accent is NOT that hard to follow. If you don't put in effort you're obviously not gonna pass, but he's always willing to help and gives lots of extra credit and take home quizzes. He'll try if you try.
Dr. Jiao is an okay professors. The language barrier can be hard to overcome, but after you get past that he isn't terrible. Although, he is very technical on his grading. Be ready to show all of your work and spell it out.
Hes very picky about how you do you work. If you skip steps and dont write out how you got your answer he marks you down. Each test we took he gave us a chance to take another copy home and redo it and he would take an average grade between the 2 scores. He let us redo several quizzes and make up lost points. Hes not a bad professor.
very very tough grader, doesn't make sense at all
There are only four test given throughout the entire course (including the final). There will be lots of homework to complete online which take hours to complete. However, the homework doesn't correlate with what is being taught in class. Be aware that your answers to questions on test must be PERFECT if you want all the credit.
I'm not someone who has issues if I study, but this course seemed impossible to do well in. He flies through material and he won't go over it again. He might know what he's talking about, but he doesn't know how to teach it. He makes mistakes and when you make the same ones, he grades them harshly. If you can avoid it, do NOT take a class whit him.
For the good parts, he gets his point across but i wish you the best of luck understanding what he is saying and reading his writing. If you can avoid having him, I heavily suggest it. You have to stay engaged all the time and if you miss a lecture, you are instantly lost. The tests are huge. I've never had to work as hard as I did for a B+.
doesnt do the best at explaining things.
Professor Jaio is really hard to understand when it comes to how he teaches his class. he also will not stop and go into depth on how he got certain answers and just expects you to come with the knowledge of the subject he is teaching.
