GREAT PROF!!
He's great. A wonderful teacher, funny, knows his stuff.
He is just great.
best teacher ive ever had...he really wants his students to do well, hes good at breaking things down so its easier to understand...always in his office for help...you have to study to do good, doesnt curve but offers some extra credit...overall cant go wrong with him, you will learn alot bc hes really smart...also nice & funny
Does a very good job at explaining the material and ALWAYS in his office to help. If you keep up with the material and go to class, you will do fine. However, time and effort is a necessity. Tests are very fair, generally all free response questions. 10 minute quiz every week and counts as one test grade. Will not fail you if you show effort.
if you can get into the class...take him! he makes you like chemistry and he is very approachable.
Had him for both semesters. Excellent, funny teacher! He explained organic chemistry very well. Easiness depends on how well you grasp the information. In both classes, he gives a quiz every week, there is homework, 3 exams, and a final. He even gives extra credit. I aced his exams and I got high A's in both classes.
this man is my hero! i hated chemistry until i took him for organic I and II. he makes it interesting, and he has the best sense of humor! the material takes time to learn, but you will like and respect Dr. A so much, you will want to make the effort. he is fair, approachable, and AWESOME! one of my fave profs!
EXCELLENT! Dr. Alegria is one of the best profs I have ever had. Makes org chem really easy to understand. He wants students to do well and goes completely out of his way to help. There are no trick questions on exams, he gives reviews before, and basically tells you what to focus on. I wish he taught more than just organic! He is the best!
Great prof who is willing to help students out whenever he can. He explains the material well, and his tests are very fair. Quizzes once a week, but you can drop the lowest two grades; 3 exams & a cumulative final. He gives enough extra credit to raise your grade about a 1/2 a letter grade if you do all of it. Great guy; take his class if you can!
The best teacher by far... Very helpful and gives you plenty of chances to bring your grades up! Don't miss out on this professor!
He is a good professor and looks out for his students best interest. This class isn't easy but its manageable. He does offer 50pts extra credit which is extremely helpful. There are 3 exams and a final. None of his exams are multiple choice. Overall, a pretty good professor!
this class is harder now, because he stopped giving extra credits and tests are challenging in organic chem II.especially when you take ACS FINAL, you gonna have to prepare by yourself because his notes WON'T help you in FINAL EXAM!! :(
He has curve and extra stuff to boost grade in organic I, so for organic II will be killer with this professor. he made us take ACS final which drops grade like a rock.
Well organic II is difficult. Dr.Alegria environmental science professor, so it was kind of hard for him to teach though class. Final is even more harder because it's comprehensive ACS exam! Dr.Alegria. NO extra curve to boost grade :(
Everyone told me to take him because he is so easy but I guess he changed everything. His office hrs are 1-2p but he doesn't show up until 1:45 with a line of people waiting. He canceled class for a week and decided to cram the material because he wasn't able to get through it all. I wouldn't recommend him. Tampa is hard but the curve makes it easi
Dr. Alegria is better than the latter, exams usually had questions from book examples. drops lowest quiz, loves chemistry and knows the subject thoroughly. Quiz every thursday in the first 10 minutes, lecture slides online, allows you to attend lectures for extra credit if you do a write up. Overall good, but takes effort. but what doesn't?
Avoid for dear life for honors. Comes and goes as he pleases, and heaven forbid you miss something he comes down on you hard.
He is A player. >)
General Chem is designed as a weed out class so is pretty tough. Get there on time on Thursdays...don't miss any quizzes. He drops 2 and i thought I was failing but in the end managed a "C" though i didn't attend a good amount of classes. It takes a lot of work and studying but he's really nice in the end...DO THE EXTRA CREDIT FOR SURE THOUGH!
Chem is hard but he does a great job of explaining things; very fair; extremely helpful and available. Strict and does not tolerate slackers. Anyone who criticizes this prof is just plain lazy and wants an easy grade.
Best prof in the sciences. If you are lazy, expect an easy grade, are used to profs who give good grades just for good evaluations, etc. do not take his classes. Everyone I've spoken to who is honest admits this guy is great and will make you learn your stuff. He cares about his students. However, he will not flinch at failing lazy bums.
I saw the comments from someone in IDH4000 and had to set the record straight. I was in the same class and I KNOW who put in that nasty rating. This guy did not understand he was in an HONORS course; he missed most classes, didn't do his work and had an attitude. Dr. Alegria was outstanding in the course. One of the best courses I've taken.
I had never had a pleasant experience in a science class before Dr. Alegria's gen chem class. Easily the best science prof I'v ever had, and most of my classmates agree. Much better than the bio profs. His class is rigorous but you will learn your stuff. He is very knowledgeable and makes the course interesting; always relates to real life.
Very demanding prof. Rigorous class. No nonsense. Smartest guy I've ever seen (knows about more than just chem). Cares about students and affords them every chance to succeed. Explains things like no one else and willing to help you learn the material. Lazy, apathetic and rude students piss him off, but wouldn't you feel the same?
He is definitely a very intimidating professor. He is very knowledgeable with organic chemistry so expects everyone to put in effort and study. The extra credit is VERY helpful. Organic chemistry is hard period so this class isn't an easy A.
H. Alegria is an excellent teacher, and is very helpful whenever there is questions in class or if you come to his office (you can go into his room at ANY time, even non office hours). He can come across as intimidating to students in class who constantly text or talk in class, but this is only because of people who talk/text in class.
Orgo sux, period. He makes it as interesting as he can but its still extremely hard. He doesn't curve like Tampa orgo classes nor does he drop any exams, but offers extra credit. The extra credit is difficult to squeeze in if you have any kind of life/responsibilities outside of school. Better off taking it in Tampa.
He is an extremely gifted professor aka very intelligent and knowledgeable on the subject. However, this is no cake walk of a course you will have to work, work , and work some more if you wish to succeed in his class. He will help you if you ask, but first you must ask and in a timely fashion. I would recommend him to other students and I have.
DO NOT TAKE HIM! He knows about chem but he expects you to know EVERYTHING. Tests are very tricky. Not very thourough. Hw doesn't really prepare you for the tests. Powerpoints are not always on Blackboard. Very intimidating. I wanted to DROP OUT of college because of this class. If you haven't had a chem class in the last 24hsr DO NOT TAKE HIM!
DON'T TAKE HIM. He is the worst professor I have ever had and he is very impossible. He has no sympathy and says everything is so simple. He doesn't answer questions well, and he makes you feel stupid while he is answering them. His tests are impossibly hard with 10 questions worth 10 points each. Worst professor ever! I now hate chemistry.
Had to rebut the two last comments. These are obviously two students who were lazy and have dropped the class. This professor is exactly the opposite of what those students say: smart, helpful, doing his part to make the class interesting and relevant. Don't take him if you are lazy and a baby.
Had to drop this class and I WAS NOT lazy. Went to his office hours, waited while he talked to a student, and then he told me he was busy eating lunch. Said to buy an online code for extra credit, six weeks into class he changes his mind - 50 bucks down the drain. Would be good class if right out of H.S. chem, but Not for me who took HS Chem in '99
This professor is definitely challenging. You will dislike him at first but will eventually enjoy the class. His class is for hard working students who want to try and put forth an effort. Tutoring may be needed as well. He does explain everything quite well and gives real life examples. He is a very smart man.
He cares about his students despite his cranky emails and rude comments. He is just preparing Pre-Med students for being a peon in the medical world. He gives extra credit & gives a quiz every week, plenty of opportunity to do well. Go to a tutor, study groups and follow up on your grades within a week, he loses stuff a lot & holds you accountable.
He's extremely intimidating. He thinks you know everything he knows, like you've taken this class before. I DO NOT RECOMMEND, unless you just graduated high school. He's very rude & doesn't explain things. We take notes but they don't even relate to the test. AVOID THIS PROFESSOR IF YOU WANT TO PASS!!! I'm in the honors program & barely got a C.
My friends told me not to take him because he's not a good teacher but I took him anyway. BIG MISTAKE. I'm an education major so I just needed one science for general ed. Trust me I'm not lazy, but this professor thinks all of his students are medical related majors & are really interested in this class. In a nutshell, choose someone else!
Worst teacher I ever had. Looks at students like they're retarded if they have questions, then he doesn't even understand what the question is. Has never once answered an e-mail, and I wrote him quite a few with questions pertaining to the class. Really does not care about his students. I loved Chemistry in high school, now I hate it!
Anybody that doesn't like Henry is just lazy. His tests are challenging but offers 50 points extra credit thru semester. And he doesn't answer e-mails, he prob gets 1000 per day from lazy irresponsible students so I wouldn't answer them either. That's what office hours are for.
Orgo sucks period, but with this professor, you might as well stay home and study the book, he just goes over what in the book really fast too, and if you ask questions, makes you feel stupid, test are always tricky, never straight foward,no mult. choice, only reason people take him is he provides extra credit!
Really good professor! His class isn't easy but if you go, pay attention, do the homework, and go get extra help, you will be rewarded for your effort. He really wants you to learn the material and is always there for you outside of class. I feel like I actually understood chemistry for once.
Avoid him like the plague! Most pompous, unprofessional, rude and incompetent professor ever. Condescending and refuses to help. Doesn't check his own answer keys and gives no explanation for grades. He really enjoys belittling people, to a nauseating degree. Take someone else!
Good teacher, will crack jokes, but explains everything well. Offers extra credit, but you still have to work hard. If you have any questions, he offers a lot of ways to help you, such as chat sessions online, and office time. He really wants you to understand and pass his class. Can come off as rude, but if you talk to him, he actually very nic
Excellent professor. He knows the material, and he knows how to teach. He has excel slides but he doesn't read them like a book. he does good examples in class, and is very fair with grading. No multiple choice on tests but will give credit for work etc. He is probably the best chem teacher I've had without a doubt.
He is a great professor goes over everything and does so many problems to make sure his students get the concept. It is a very challenging class and you have to work for your grade but you are def learning and feel accomplished at the end. He does help alot and tries to make sure ever student passes. Dont listen to others who rate out of lazyness
Chemistry is hard but Dr Alegria knows the material and knows how to teach it.He is also very helpful. You'll learn alot throughout the semester. He is probably the best chemistry professor you'll ever have
People give Dr. Alegria a bad rap. Organic Chem is very, very hard, but that's not any fault of his. He teaches the material clearly, knows it well and is always available during office hours. You have to study (a lot compared to other classes), read and go to class, but you won't find a better instructor to help you understand the material.
He just recently became my new professor in Gen Chem and during the first day he taught I felt like I had learned more from him in that one class than I had from the other professor during the whole first half of the semester!
By far the worst instructor I have had. Refused to help me when I asked. Belittled students when they didn't understand material. Took this class with a another instructor on another campus and got an A+ final grade! WOULD NOT RECOMMEND!
awesome orgo teacher, its refreashing to have a teacher not use a power point. He understands how he needs to teach the material to best get it accross his students. I feared orgo. and now i would say its MUCH easier than gen. chem. but i would have to say that's because he teaches it. The one bad thing about him is he can be rude sometime.
A TRUE professor. You will learn organic chemistry by the way he teaches. he doesn't waste your time, but he doesn't want you to waste his either. I would take him for every chemistry class possible. Awesome, awesome professor!
Had him for Orgo 1 & 2. He is definitely a hard professor; good grades do NOT come easily. I studied for every quiz and every exam and always had C's with occasional B's. It is a hard subject that you MUST study for, especially with him.
Def teaches orgo in a way you can learn it. Just pay attention and study as you go and you will get a B atleast.Very fair. Quizzes are all in the notes. Test topics are given before the exams. Drops 2 quizzes. Plenty of extra credit. I recommend buying the solution manual.
He's abrasive and cut-and-dry. If you pay attention and really work at this class, you'll pass with a B, no problem. Slack even a tiny bit, & you'll end up with a C. If you only half-way pay attention, you will not pass. This is a challenging course but he is more than accommodating. Lots of extra credit opportunities. Prepare to work hard.
He really is the best. I took this class in Tampa with Antilla then withdrew it and retook it with him and he's amazing. Gives extra credit that's worth a letter grade and explains in a way that will really help you understand. Teaches from the heart, is extremely fair and a really funny, nice guy. Put in effort and you'll learn to love orgo w/ him.
Best Organic Chemistry professor out there. Dr. Alegria is a professor whom expect his students to keep with the course. He does not intends to teach the material from zero. There is extra credit in his course to help you achieve a better grade, but do not count solely on that.
This proffessor is absolutely the best one ive taken at USF. You will only fail, and find this class impossibly hard if you are an idiot lazy student. Dr. alegria has no patience for such students. Simply apply yourself wholey to the course and you shall succeed. I got an A+ on Orgo I and II
"Really and truly" Practice makes perfect. If you are not motivated do not take this class. His lectures are easy to follow, so pay attention. Do not cram. Stay on top of the material by constantly studying the chapters in the textbook. Prepare to spend hours upon hours preparing for the exams! It is not an easy class!
Dr. Alegria is an amazing professor! He truly cares about his students & goes above and beyond to help them out. Orgo is no joke, you have to put in effort & practice but he is extremely fair in his questions and is very intelligent! He's done research at MIT & understands how to teach effectively. Highly recommend him! Great person and teacher.
Alegria is a pretty good teacher. He is extremely straight forward with what he expects and what will be on the exams. Exams are predictable. He does make you know things that seem pointless though. Very doable classes if you put the time in! I did not find him helpful during his office hours though. Sometimes he would be busy and not there.
Took Organic Chemistry 1 and 2 with Dr. Alegria in back to back semesters. Best professor I've had in college! Can't imagine learning OChem from anyone else! Read ahead, go to every class, and practice until you feel like you can't anymore--then practice more! You will get the grade you work for!
He's a good guy but his teaching skills lack. Tests are ridiculously difficult. He is very straight forward and actually pretty intimidating to the point where he is almost unapproachable. Honestly probably one of the most poorly taught classes I've ever attended.
Professor Alegria is an excellent professor. His lectures are very straightforward and useful. Another professor substituted once and I was completely lost. His teaching style is effective. His class is very difficult. Study hard for the tests and don't expect any grade to come easily. Expect late nights studying and challenging quizzes/tests.
Dr. Alegria is a great professor. His class is and will always be hard. He puts more pressure on Orgo 2 vs. Orgo 1. His tests/finals are difficult and require a lot of practice time. There is no room for being unprepared or test panic. However, he actually has a big heart and wants his students to succeed. Office hours help
Everyone on here loves to whine and will never be happy with anything. Don't rate the professor based off your laziness or your lack of understanding. He is extremely fair and his exams aren't hard if you've done enough practice. No one teaches with integrity like he does and gives so much extra credit. Took Orgo 1&2 with him & got an A in both.
Alegria is a very sneaky guy, but the most informative professor ever. Show up to class, write everything, listen to his explanations and you will understand the material. This class will not be easy. Alegria expects the impossible on tests. If you truly bust your butt, expect a C. It'll look bad until final reports come out and Surprise! It's a B+
I averaged out studying every week 20 hrs a week, nights & weekends. Class is not easy, weekly quizzes, pay attention and awake in class, take advantage of ALL e.c. opportunities, and open for office hrs. Work practice problems, stay discipline in the class and stay dedicatedfocus towards the class and you will get the grade you work for.
Passionate man! He knows his stuffs so well and gives you detailed explanation of real applications in organic chemistry. However, be sure to do exactly as he instructs especially since his grading can be strict. YOU WILL LEARN in his class, though, organic chemistry is hard by nature. Be ready to work for the grade!
Lots of homework and quizzes online but those significantly help your grade if you work hard at them! (Chegg saves lives as well) . Final was super straight forward if you put the time in to grasp the material
I know the subject is hard but when the mean grade is a 58 there's obviously something not getting across. He helps on his terms. Not always what you need but he will answer questions outside class.
Students at the Tampa campus are willing to take the drive to take his course. What does that tell you about him? Greatness.
Henry Alegria is smart. That does not help him convey the material. He's also a bit racist towards white people. Also wastes a lot of precious class time preaching about politics. He goes through material so quickly your head is still spinning before you can ask any questions and he moves on. No powerpoints or study guides for a difficult subject.
Dr. Alegria is an overall solid professor for such a difficult subject. Before taking his class, I had heard a lot of terrible stories about him and was pretty worried, but he is actually a pretty nice guy. He wants his students to succeed, he just isn't going to hold your hand (at all) to make sure you do.
This professor gets negative feedback simply because people expect grades to be handed out. You will work in this class. He is very clear in lecture and if he goes too fast for you its OK he posts all lectures online. Any questions you have on the homework he will answer by email quickly. Great professor and makes lectures funny/interesting.
Organic Chemistry is an extremely hard subject but he gives a fair amount of extra credit and other opportunities. I personally think he is hilarious and extremely intelligent. You will need to work for your grade- show up to class, study hard, and ask questions! he provides friday help sessions and goes over the answers to all tests and quizzes
He is very clear when explaining the material. He provides video lectures to watch and also websites you can use to practice. The material is hard and on the exams you either know it or not (short answer). He is very willing to help. I took him for both organic 1 and 2 and would take him again. It is hard to get an A but its possible.
Orgo 2 is hard, there's no denying that. But he cares about his students, his quests are all like best of seven when there's ten questions. He doesn't want to fail everyone and explains things very well.
Dr. Alegria is a great teacher in most ways. That being said, he will not tolerate BS and can be very condescending/sarcastic. 40% of your grade is on two tests: a midterm and a not cumulative final. Midterm was curved but final was not. The class average was a 53% and he did not curve it. Course grade is not curved, a 90 is an A, 88.5-90 is a B+.
Alegria explains the material well, but his tests are very difficult. His tests are multiple choice, but they aren't any easier than if he were to give a normal written test. Two exams through the entire semester, as well as weekly 'quests'. Make sure you stay on top of the material because it will pile up very fast.
Don't listen to negative feedback. This man is extremely smart and teaches VERY well. I learned absolutely nothing from my Orgo1 professor, came to this class blind & still passed. Do your homework (CHEGG!!), go to class, put the time in to study for weekly quizzes and the two exams. His grading system is more than fair. KEEP UP WITH THE WORK!!
Orgo is an incredibly difficult subject, but he does an AMAZING job teaching it. Can actually say I learned and understood orgo after taking him. Makes you work for your grade and the class requires a lot of discipline (given there is no graded hw), but if you are ready to put in the work to learn, he is the guy to take. Exams are reasonable
I always hate it when professors abuse their position of authority to insert their political opinions where they do not belong, and this guy does it ALL THE TIME. He wastes half the class period by talking about his ridiculous political opinions instead of organic chemistry. He is a tough grader and an all-around unpleasant person.
His lectures are great and he does an excellent job discussing real world application of the material and why it is important. It really gets me interested in Organic Chemistry. He is a very tough grader and grades are only based on exams. I wish he offered homework assignments for grades. I do very well on the practice sheets but not on exams.
AWESOME PROFESSOR.
Your best option is to go to his office hours frequently. He doesn't allow electronics in class and he will call you on the floor if you continually ignore his lecture. He has amazing and detailed lectures. He does not assign homework, but you will need to practice the material outside of class if you want to pass.
He is the kind of professor you could go an listen to at a conference and enjoy his lectures but when it comes to teaching the material he goes way too fast, doesn't have homework so you don't get feedback along the way. It's like a cell growing without any checkpoints. He has office hours but if you have work and family they aren't convenient.
Dr. Alegria is a great professor. I took him for Organic chemistry I & II. He drops two quiz grades and allows a make up test to take the place of your lowest one. This subject is not easy so I recommend to study ALOT and attend office hours/review sessions. He notices when students put in hard work and is willing to help.
Dr Alegria is a great teacher! He gives clear instructions & explains things well, also ALWAYS applies the concepts to real life which keeps the topics interesting. He has a tough love attitude & gets irritated if youre constantly on your phone, but honestly hes one of the most considerate teachers Ive ever had. Take his advice & you should be fine
He is a good teacher and at first he seems intimidating don't let that fool you he is a good person and is really funny just pay attention, do the practice sheets and get some friends to study with.
I love Dr. Alegria! He is so knowledgeable, helpful, and professional. Come to his office hours if you're stuck after lecture, and he's there to help you out! He had offered a lot of opportunities to boost your grade up such as a dropped exam, an extra credit, and three dropped quizzes. I ended up with an A+ and I was able to exempt his finals.
Professor Alegria is a great professor. He cares about his students and that he wants to give his students alot of opportunities to pass the class. Exam are all multiple choice. Drop one exam. If you get an A average on all your exams, problem set and quizzes you can exempt the final. I would definitely take him for Orgo 2.
This class is very difficult and most students only take it because it is required of them. Dr Alegria is not the easiest professor, but a really good one. He is very intelligent and knows what he is teaching. He is also pretty intimidating but is willing to help his students. I hated this course, but I wouldn't have passed without his help!
Dr. Alegria may seem intimidating, but he's just a no nonsense person that doesn't appreciate slackers. He genuinely cares about the success of his students. Organic chemistry is a difficult subject, but he knows how to teach it well. Don't expect an easy A, you have to earn it, but Dr. Alegria has office hours and will always help if you ask!
Best organic chem professor ever. Organic chem was hard and is a hard subject but Dr. Alegrai makes the subject and topics clear and explains so very well, If you wanting an easy grade then you are in for a shock, but if you truly want to know O chem then 100% take.
He is a great professor. When submitting assignments, be very mindful of his instructions, as he will not even accept your assignment if you miss even a part of his instructions. Go to class, take notes, do the practice sheets & the problem sets and you should be well prepared for his quizzes and exams. He offers an opportunity to exempt the final.
Dr. Alegria is a great professor. He is diligent with what he teaches, and will not trick you on the exams. This was Organic Chemistry 2, so it was hard on it's own. He gives and opportunity for extra credit at the end of the course. Weekly quizzes, has many practice sheets (not graded), and if you know how to study you will pass.
Dr. Alegria is one of my favorite professors at USF. He is honest and it will upset some people, but they need to get over themselves. He was always available via online study sessions or in his office to discuss anything. By the second test, all the questions were multiple choice. He posts lecture videos and lots of practice sheets
Dr. Alegria is a very fair teacher. Lectures are straight forward, and organized not extra useless information. Provides with a tone of practice that goes with each lecture, that you must do not for credit but to do good in the class. The quizzes are hard if you don't do the practice and make sure you actually do it correct you will not succeed.
Professor Alegria does an excellent job at providing students with an in-depth understanding on the material he teaches. He is very dedicated to his job and takes the time to post practice questions on everything covered during class every couple of days. He also gives students a breakdown of how the test will be and recommendations on how to study
When I took this class the first day I walked in he said I will not be good to you, I will not be your friend, but I should be good for you. During lectures if you try to ask a question he will respond with a sarcastic response or will make you feel stupid for not knowing the answer, making learning rather difficult. Hate to see it.
Dr. Alegria is easily one of the better orgo professors I've ever encountered, especially after failing orgo 2 once already. The textbook is optional and the exams are multiple choice. He also gives a lot of leeway on the quizzes since they're free response. If you do the practice sheets he posts, you should be able to pass no problem.
In his e-mails, he seems like a nice guy... but when it comes to lectures, it is a different story. Can't ask any questions without him going, "oh that's gen chem/orgo 1" and doesn't answer. I'm sorry we can't remember every little detail about this class. I got an A in orgo 1, but not sure what I ended up with in this class.
TERRIBLE. Doesn't answer emails. Will even tear your quiz paper if you hand it in one minute late! AVOID!
This is my 2nd time taking Orgo 2 & I wish I would have had him for Orgo 1 too! He is a really great teacher. He explains everything extremely well & relates it to the real world, which helps me. No homework, just practice sheets. Quizzes & exams. He let us "retake" our first exam in groups, with notes/textbook, to get half of our missed points!
Rude, sarcastic, doesnt respect his students. I have never had a professor who was so condescending to students. He acts like he hates being a teacher. Dont go to class thinking you can asked questions without him making you feel dumb first. He constantly says come to him with questions but no one wants to because of how intimidating he is.
Hands down best prof ever. I wish I took him for Orgo 1. He explains everything so well and gives you everything to prepare for the exam. Don't be scared to ask him questions people think he's mean but that's just him. He has a good sense of humor and makes class interesting. If you watch the lecture videos before the class you're golden. -Bhakti
Dr. Alegria is a no nonsense professor who expects everyone to be mature responsible adults. He is a bit abrasive in discussion sessions but is a lot more approachable in office hours. He will give 100% to help everyone learn the material but you have to tell him what you struggle with. Do his worksheets and use office hours, you will pass.
Dr. Alegria gets a lot of hate for being pretty blunt a lot of the time but he's honestly a great teacher. He is very clear about what he expects on each quiz. He says to read the textbook but his quizzes are based heavily on the lectures and practice sheets he gives you. Nothing super unexpected ever came up. Very generous with the final grade.
Professor Alegria is an alright teacher but his class set up isn't great. You have to learn a chapter one week and take the quiz for it next week while learning another chapter. He also only counts the quizzes and final as the total grade so if you're a bad test taker I don't recommend this class. Overall setup was confusing and teacher was no help
Worst professor ever. If you normally email teachers for help . Dont take this class . He is very rude in emails that you are scared to email him. No I am not the only one who feels like this others does as well. I emailed him asking about the material I get. Email back thats attacking me for not doing things his way when I actually did. Disres
It sounds good to take quizzes everyweek instead of exam. Think again, not good if sometimes you lack understanding a specific material. Your grade will be low the entire semester. Horrible professor because he is RUDE to students. Its not ok.
Professor Alegria shows that he cares about Orgo but that does not resonate with the students. He is difficult to work with and gets defensive whenever you write him an email. He is a bad teacher that excuses his actions as "years of experience". Please do not take him. He will give you several announcements per week and will overload your life.
Alegria has been one of the rudest professors that I've had. Not only does he imply that students are dumb when they ask questions, but his explanations are rushed and he has a major attitude. He is constantly calling students liars when they tell him that he's wrong about answers and gets upset when people don't show up to his study halls.
He complains constantly about bad student evaluations and then gets annoyed with students who ask simple, polite questions. Changed the syllabus a month into the class to get rid of extra credit opportunities. Only class I've ever withdrawn from. I was averaging a high B, but sitting in his class was depressing.
I did very well in Orgo 1 but Orgo 2 no. I am having to retake this class sadly. He is very good at teaching the material but the quizzes I felt did not represent what we were learning. I wish we were given more time to study the material a week is not enough. He is very discouraging to students. Always putting us down.
No Exams, No HW. Sounds good but its not you only get graded on 50 point quizzes every week. That can hurt your grade. This is my 3rd year in school and Ive never had a professor mean and rude like him! Everyone in class is to afraid to ask questions b/c he makes you feel dumb! If someone advised you to take his class because its just quizzes. DONT
If you can't take disrespect then don't take this class. You can ask the professor a simple question and you can get responded back with a disrespectful tone as if you should know the stuff ,why are you asking me this question. The grading/quizzes are ok but I would do much better if the teacher was someone easy to talk too/ ask questions.
Alegria is the meanest professor I have ever had. He literally makes you feel stupid for answering a question, but also gets pissy when no one answers. He entirely does not teach for how his quizzes will be. There will actually be stuff on a quiz that will be taught next week. Seriously stay far far far away from him. Take it with any other teacher
Dr. Alegria is a smart person and knows what he is talking about. That is a fact. The weekly quizzes instead of exams are what made me want to take his class, I was wrong. The quiz questions are 99% taken from random textbooks. Don't even think about asking him questions during class. If you need to take Orgo 2, literally take ANY other prof.
Dr. Alegria should not be teaching. His class was the worst academic experience of my undergraduate career so far. He is constantly rude to his students and extremely unapproachable. Your entire grade is based on 12 fifty-point quizzes and a 150 point final exam. His lectures are mundane and barely provides practice problems to work on. STAY AWAY.
I'd like to thank you professor.. Crash Course and The Organic Chemistry Tutor on YouTube.. I can only credit the grade I got to outside learning and the academic success tutors. His "20+ years of experience" exempts him from listening to students concerns. He expects you know things that haven't yet been taught and says that's from chem 2.
I usually love a structured strict class, which was how this was advertised, but thats not what it is. Its an opportunity for him to berate students for not trying hard enough and suggest that his way is the only/best way to teach and that he is the all-knowing expert. He wastes half the class talking down to students, not teaching.
Professor is very disorganized and grades very very harshly you must teach yourself.
Dr. Alegria gets tons of flack for his blunt personality and quiz difficulty. His quizzes are very difficult and you really HAVE to understand the concepts 100% to do well on them. He has about 3-4 of pre-recorded videos per week on top of his synchronous lectures. Watch those, attend lecture and you'll pass. Great professor if you want to learn.
Dr. Alegria is very straight forward and can seem unapproachable, but if you need help approach him anyway. He just wants to see you're putting the appropriate amount of effort in. As long as you work hard he will do everything he can to help you understand if you're not getting it. One thing he could never be called is inaccessible.
Dr. Alegria is a great Orgo professor and I am glad I was fortunate enough to take his class. He is accessible more than any professor I have had via office hours, email, one on one student conferences, etc. Put in the effort to learn and grasp the concepts and Dr. Alegria is absolutely there to answer any questions along the way!
Only a total 38 students this Fall. Tricky wording questions + grade harshly on Fr. Response. Tests written by a Ph.D. are so hard only other Ph.D could possibly get all the points but the students. 4:3-4 practice handouts/chapter, no HW. Fact5: research study is his main focus. The practice's on West, the test's on East. Attitude's curbed now.
Something happened during COVID that made Algeria completely unapproachable and awful. I had taken him for gen chem my first year and he was still blunt but I felt respected; I had to withdraw from his orgo II class because he made me feel so bad and stupid. The school seriously needs to talk to him about this. Take Elshorbany if you can instead.
This guy doesnt blow smoke. Hes straight forward, cares about his students and will go the extra mile especially when you reach out to him for help. The class lecture and quiz review recordings prove to be very helpful. The pre-recorded videos tend to be a bit lengthy but useful nonetheless.
Dr. Alegria is a great professor. He seems distant and unapproachable at first but this is not the case in reality. He offers frequent office hours and will help you with whatever you need no matter how "Simple" it may be. He is a great teacher and will help you A LOT but the catch is YOU MUST APPROACH HIM in office hours or by email or something.
Alegria can be passive aggressive at times. He is a great professor though! Asking him questions may seem daunting, but he actually appreciates it a lot. If you struggle with the work, go to office hours and get help! If he sees you are trying then you are much better off. Make sure to study a lot, pay attention in lecture, and practice a lot!
At the beginning of class he claims that "he's just straight to the point". There is a difference between being straight to the point and being straight up rude. His tests were not too bad though. But, his lectures are all over the place and disorganized. He includes mistakes in the lecture videos which only makes it more confusing!
He is a great professor teaching wise. He makes clear of his expectations and how to pass, if you do it, it is easy class. His lecture videos are very informative, and he is very accessible outside of class with many help sessions, etc. He does make a big deal out of small things, and is slightly rude but you are here to learn not be his friend.
Professor Alegria is a great professor who is very fair and has clear expectations. He will put a lot of time in helping you as long as you put in the time yourself and ask him. Some quizzes were quite difficult while other times they were much easier, however, he provided a generous amount of drops and extra credit to enable students to succeed.
He creates video lectures for every quiz which are so helpful. It gives you exactly what you need to get an A on the quiz. He also holds office hours every week to help you with the homework. He also always asks for students to reach out if they need help. Class was challenging but if you worked hard enough, you can get through alive.
Alegria can be tough but he prepares you for what you would need to know for MCAT/DAT. It's not an easy class but he makes sure you leave understanding the material. Very easy to access through email and always caring. Would take him again.
Drove from Tampa campus and it was 100% worth it. He gave test corrections once, extra credit, and made final optional. Just be aware he'll seem harsh, but that's b/c the class is hard and he wants you to care as much as he does. He's the best take him, watch lectures!! He's open to meet whenever. Every semesters diff but try your best it'll be ok.
Don't get me wrong- I am intimidated by this man. However, I would not have passed if it were not for Dr. Alegria. He explains things well, he is straight forward in what he expects from you and what to expect from him, and he offers ample practice. He is not at all like what people say he is. Thankful I took his class & actually learned material.
Seems imposing, but he genuinely cares the students pass. Can seem "rude" but its nothing major. Lectures are basically mandatory, as that's the only way you'll fully understand. If you attend each lecture, and do a quick review before, the quizzes are easy. Homework isn't hard either. Exams are harder but that's expected. Def recommend him.
The drive is worth it. He doesn't lecture straight from slides or the textbook. He lectures thru drawing out his thoughts. It might seem irritating at first that he doesnt give "textual definitions" per say, but his notes actually help you in the long run with all the practice examples he's giving. He does curve test and drops final isnt mandatory.
Dr.Alegria is my favorite professor of all time!Orgo is not an easy subject but the way he teaches it and presents the material helped me succeed. He does not throw a bunch of information at once but rather breaks it down and gives a lot of practice. His exams are doable if you are keeping up with material. He's always willing to help outside of class
top five professors at usf. His tests are difficult, but organic chem is a difficult class. study and go to office hours. he is super funny. each lecture had my friends and i laughing at least once. Dr. A made organic chemistry bearable. If you can, take him and pay attention in class. The ones failing are the ones on their phones and distracted
OChem is hard, there's no way around that but if you want to learn the material at USFSP, take Alegria instead of Pandey. He's a great teacher, goes the extra mile and does extra sessions on Fri, and is always available to meet. His office hours were EMPTY so I got 1on1. He's gruff but extremely knowledgeable with a great dry humor and insight.
Dr. Alegria is probably the best professor at USF for orgo 2 if you actually want to learn the material thoroughly. Yes, his personality can be a bit abrasive, but he is a very fair grader and his lectures are very engaging. If you're looking for an easy A, take Elshorbany, but if you want to learn the material, take Alegria.
quizzes do not mirror practice or lectures!
Dr. Alegria is one of the most angry and demeaning professors I have even met. He went on vacation for 3 weeks in the middle of the semester and never properly answers your questions when you need help and he is very passive aggressive. This quizzes are timed at 30 minutes, which is not enough time for the amount of material covered on the quizzes.
This is the worst professor I have ever had. He is passive aggressive, bordering on insecure. Every email and announcement he sends includes an insult towards students. He refused to hold help sessions due to low attendance, only curved two of three exams, and neglected to tell us if the final was cumulative or not until less than a week before.
Dr. Alegria is always angry. Very passive aggressive, very demeaning, and could care less about his students. My suggestion is, get to know him outside of class - he was extremely rude to all of his students in class, but whenever I went to office hours 1 on 1, he was a different person, actually showed compassion and was willing to help.
The class is very difficult point blank period but he is a good teacher Hes snarky but if you are sensitive you're going to think he's out to get you his emails are for sure sharp sometimes. His office hours are helpful emailing him is helpful and you cannot pass this class passively fight for your grade from the beginning
If I've ever had a professor, this one is the worst. On the verge of insecurity, he displays passive aggression. An insult directed against students appears in every email and announcement that he sends. He skipped out on telling us whether the final was cumulative until the last minute and refused to organize support sessions.
Dr Alegria is incredible. He teaches the foundations and details of orgo so well and his final was optional. He drops the lowest 2 quizzes (weekly quizzes) and drops the lowest 2 homeworks. Hw is online 20-40 questions a week. He has 3 exams and a final. His exams are mostly multiple choice with the exception of one exam having written response.
Very intelligent in his field of study I can assure that. He had three lectures moved online or cancelled due to sickness or family needs. Besides that he always making sure we (the class) are informed for what is to come. Can come off as passive aggressive so ask the right questions. Likes to see class when they are studying.
I can assure you that all the 5 star reviews are written by him. I am almost certain he will write a 5 star review after this one. Just beware. Trust the 1 star reviews. He is an angry, mean man. He is passive aggressive, borderline insecure. This reflects on his teaching and grading. He is especially mean to female students.
No compassion. When I went to his office hours to ask how to improve on the following exam he said "organic chemistry is not for everyone" rather than helping me determine how I was studying wrong. much easier than ochem 1 in tampa tho. just make sure if you are gonna commute choose another teacher.
Professor drops 2 quizzes, 2 hw's, gives many opportunities to improve grade. Exam questions are easier than the books, so if you do those practice problems you are good. Class is a flipped course so you are expected to prepare before class. Not too bad, bad reviews are from people who did not prepare adequately. This class was very doable.
If you want to learn then take him. If you are lazy, don't want to study or don't want a heavy homework load then don't take him. You have be able and willing to apply yourself. He is not your friend nor is he looking to baby you. Take him if you are trying to learn or looking to take the MCAT.
His lectures are very boring and because of his general attitude he creates a toxic vibe during lectures and unapproachable outside. I do not understand how Dr. Alegria is a professor and not conduct any research. He does not have a research lab. I believe he should be an instructor and not a professor when he does not do any real research.
I do not respect his discouraging attitude and mindset in class. He acts like a majority of his students will never be qualified to attend medical school. Provides packets during class, but exam is more difficult. Exams do not reflect his lectures, which are always sped through.
Honestly this man keeps it real and you gotta respect him for it. He tells you exactly how to get a good grade in his class and if he knows you are trying he will help you out. If you wanna pass this class you need to go to class, watch his videos, and do the worksheets. If you are sensitive or do not want to show up to his class dont take him.
Don't take Henry; he's an angry old man who projects onto his class. He is a smart guy, but he does not want you to succeed, he is only a professor at the university because it allows him to do research. He does not care about his students. The average grade for exams was an F. Take anyone else.
While Professor Alegria may seem stern at first, his classes are engaging and he genuinely wants students to succeed. The material is challenging, but going to lectures, using the textbook, and tools like unstuck study can really help. Definitely worth taking him if you want to truly learn organic chemistry.
I was naive and did not trust these ratings, but he is truly horrible. I have never met someone who wanted his students to fail so badly. What is the point of practice if we can only get the answers to them after being criticized for doing it wrong? Also, no crap orgo is so easy for you, you have been doing it for 40 years, this is our first time.
The reviews don't lie, he's kinda grumpy and mean but tbh he's funny and he's a clear lecturer. You have to engage with him and really try on all of his practices. Don't choose a professor for his personality, choose him because he'll challenge you and teach you well. Orgo is not a class to try to coast thru, esp if you want grad school.
Great teacher but a terrible person. He explains the concepts well and is very knowledgeable on the subject. However, I recommend you don't ask questions, go to office hours, or email him. By reaching out to him in any form, you will end up more discouraged than before or in tears. The only thing this man hates more than his job is his students.
If you are here to learn take him. Very clear on what his expectations are and simply expects you to be serious in your approach to the class. Explains things clearly and makes himself available outside of class. Negative reviews must be from those who slack off and then expect him to feel sorry for them. They should grow up.
He really cares that you learn. He provides you with videos to watch ahead of class. They really explain things well and in class he repeats the main points. Gives in class practice and out of class extra practice. He holds problem solving sessions online. He provides feedback if you reach out to him. Best science professor I've had.
I registered right after the lecture started during drop/add. I emailed him about my late registration (thinking it was a common issue during drop-add week) and he dropped me from the class. I reached out again, got an answer the next day. It was snarky, mean, and passive aggressive. I didn't re-register. He seems unprofessional and disrespectful.
I saw the last rating and had to say it's crazy that this person admits he or she hasn't taken the course yet gives him a bad rating. WTF! Took his orgo 1 and he's absolutely the best if you want to learn. He explains things clearly, provides a lot of practice and will give feedback if you ask for it. Take him. He just doesn't baby you.
Took orgo 1 in Tampa and orgo 2 with Dr. Alegria. I wish I had taken orgo 1 with him. Posted excellent videos ahead of time in which he explained everything clearly and in detail. Made the in class part easier and the in class work is very helpful. Takes his time to do problem solving sessions online Fridays. He wants you to learn. D best.
He explains things clearly. He connects the class to real world applications. He's willing to help you outside class. He makes his expectations very clear and is very organized. I like his in class work which helps me learn. Take him if you want to really learn. Just don't expect him to baby you like some professors.
Don't take him. He is not a good professor. Especially if you're registered to take him for the summer. Tests are much harder than worksheets. I emailed him a question once and he copy pasted it, and posted it publicly in an announcement. I don't think it's appropriate to humiliate a studentVery difficult class.
Don't believe the last person. I was in chm 2210 also and exams were very similar to homework and practice questions. Obviously if you don't go to class, practice and don't do homework exams will be hard. As to "humiliating" anyone I call bs. He TELLS the class that he will answer some questions as announcements but removes identifying info.
He is a great professor. He clearly states what to expect and how much effort is needed to pass the class. He can seem a bit harsh at times but I think that's just get students to take the information more seriously, because it's not intuitive. He gives a ton of practice problems, especially in the summer session. There is also partial credit on
Very clear and direct on his expectations. Explains things so I could understand well. Provides a lot of practice and gives feedback. If you want to learn take him, just be prepared to put in a good effort. Incredibly about 75 percent of the class never attended even after he stressed that if you didn't you'd likely fail. That's on them.
