Some liked him, and some didn't. I tried very hard in his class and recieved good grades, but it was tough. If you want to challenge yourself, he's your man. If you do struggle though, he goes wayy out of his way to make time! Sketchbook Required.
A fairly nice guy, if you want to make a good grade/understand his assignments your going to have to spend alot of time with him. this was one of the first classes i took it brought some people to tears and it almost made me not wan to come back, but we were freshman so i knew better a quarter later
i thought the class was easy. im not big into drawing, but he was pretty easy to please. just follow the assignments outlines and youll do fine
Henry Dean was an interesting teacher. I didn't do too well but then again I wasnt interested in drawing. He as a person was allright but the class i thought was a horrible bore and he grades tough.
He has an odd British sense of humor. Critiques are long often taking 2.5 hrs. you have a project due every week and are required to keep a sketchbook. lectures are dry and boring. but the class is relatively easy. Just follow the directions and try is all he asks.

Critiques take most of class time and leaves little to no time for demonstrations, so I didn't learn a lot of techniques. Generally a boring teacher but pretty nice. Will make time to help you. Very irratating to have scale drawings done two days before finished product because critique of drawing can change the final and leaves little litme.
I love Dean. You have a project due every week and the final project you have 2 weeks. it gets tough but i learned sooo much. and he's english...he's amazing and i would take again for any class!
Very good profesor although i have to question his own talents some times. He also is starting to grade me on my own standard since i've above most of the other classmates. I'm not sure how I feel about that
dean was a very confusing professor. his grading technique was hard to figure out and it seemed like he graded against other students in the class, which sucks for anyone with really good people in their class like mine. he wasn't very clear on what he wanted for the sketchbooks either. it also seemed like he decided that whatever you got on the f
Dean will push you to do your best. He seems to grade based on personal growth. In progress critiques are helpful but time may be limited if you have to change your project significantly. He is very enthusiastic and will run over class time if not reminded of the time. I learned a lot from him, and I'm taking his life drawing class in the fall.
Professor Dean is a great guy and is absolutely hilarious...I had so much fun in his class. However, as a teacher, he's unpredictable. If you come into the class with a lot of prior drawing experience he will grade you a LOT more harshly. He favors students with his own sketchy or impressionistic style. Grades seem completely arbitrary sometimes.
After taking Dean's class, I lost all creative energy and confidence. He's very confusing/unclear and it's hard to peg just how he grades the work. He's very hurtful and sometimes even mean when you ask for help. I dreaded going to his class even though I love to draw and I'm not a particularly bad artist or student. I didn't learn anything.
I knew how to draw pretty well coming into this class, but I hadn't drawn from life in a while, so it was nice to get back into the swing of things. However, when I discovered I could already draw, my grades began to drop and I had to work very hard to get an A. He doesn't make much sense sometimes, but he's entertaining to listen to, at least.
i DONT THINK HE REALIZES AT ALL THAT FOUNDATIONS ARE BECAUSE SCAD MAKES US. NOT BECAUSE WE THINK WE ARE AMAZING AT DRAWING PERSPECTIVE AND WHAT NOT. MY STUFF WAS ABOVE AVERAGE AND i ENDED UP WITH A C. HES IMPOSSIBLE, YOU WONT GET AN A EVER AND YOULL BE CRAZY STRESSED THE WHOLE QUARTER. DONT TAKE HIM UNLESS YOUR AN AMAZING DRAWER.
I don't know what these people are talking about. Professor Dean is the most helpful professor I've had so far. He has extra help every week and sends out plenty of emails for instruction and clarity. My only complaint is that the critiques were a bit long which ended up rushing the drawing time later in class. overall a great teacher
Great professor but he doesn't teach all that much but he's really helpful when you need help. His critiques usually run on forever but they are really helpful. his extra help sessions are gold and he brought milk and cookies to every one of them. Really good to take and very understanding. He expects a lot but that's a good thing.
Henry Dean is a nice guy and takes his role as a teacher more seriously than any professor I've ever had before. he also demands the students take it seriously too and there's a lot of work involved. if you DON'T want to sleep through foundations he's a good choice.
Prof. Dean is incredibly passionate about drawing. He really loves the process and if you take his class, I highly recommend that you do some one-on-one with him; they're extremely enlightening. You have to work hard for your grades, but he can teach you to -understand- your art, more than just be able to draw. A great professor.
Henry Dean is an extremely dedicated artist and a very inspirational person ... but as a teacher, HE'S AWFUL! DO NOT, i repeat DO NOT TAKE HIM! He is so confusing and never really tells you what he wants. He grades extremely hard and will make you feel inadequate as an artist. STAY FAR AWAY FROM HIM.
He requires a lot of extra work and hardly gives out As unless you do part of the project over again.
I've learned a lot but at the expense of my sanity -- The assignments are work-heavy and he grades very tough. His critiques and lessons are always worthwhile, although he has a tendancy to talk too much and expect a lot of work to happen in the small amount of time he leaves after stopping. He seems to expect way too much from students.
I took him for DRAW II and Life Drawing and I can safely say that I attribute all of my drawing abilities to dear Prof.Henry. He is the most helpful professor I've had at SCAD, has extra help every week, has endless suggestions to make you better and he enjoys teaching his classes. He's a tough grader though, but you learn so much with him.
I had Dean as my Drawing 1 professor and he made me feel incompetent as an artist. As nervous enough as incoming freshman are, Dean does not hesitate to pile on incredibly tedious and tough projects, as well as expects a sketchbook full by midterms. He preaches about drawings having "soul." While extremely tough, you could benefit from his class.
He will push you, and he Grades too hard on participation. I already knew how to draw well and I still learned a few things
This guy is perhaps the worst teacher I have ever had. He seems decent outside of class but his huge ego and lack of clarity made this class the worst I have ever had. If you get him and cant draw, do yourself a huge favor and take someone else. After taking drawing II with another teacher I realize not only that was he mean and full of himself, he
If you want to kill your self take this class with him, you never know what he really wants.
Professor Dean was the most inspiring and passionate teacher I have had at Scad thus far. I knew he was not easy, so if you are not looking to challenge yourself and become a better artist, don't take him. he cares about students as people and as artists. He is extremely friendly and fervent about what he is teaching. He inspired me so much as a fr
I read a lot of critiques on him and was extremely scared. The more I attend class, the more I notice that a lot of these comments are completely false. He makes you work hard and you see such a great improvement even after the second project. He's an entertaining professor and is extremely genuine. Take is class if you want to better yourself!
To be fair, Professor Dean is not a bad teacher. His methods of teaching, however, are a bit extreme in some cases, especially for freshmen. Expect to work in his class, and work hard, but also expect to learn. Dean will not hesitate to critique your work, but he will also not hesitate to show you how you can better yourself as an artist.
If you actually want to gain some knowledge and really understand hows things work then TAKE HIM. His drawing methods are awesome. He gets this crazy look thats shows he loves what he is doing. I say TAKE HIM, he was really interesting person to learn from.
Dean is a great professor. Love the accent. He makes things very understandable and really wants you to work hard and succeed.
I took Dean for Life Drawing, after my roommate recommended him to me since I can actually draw. He evaluates your potential right away. I got an A on the first project, and then a low B on the next because I hadn't improved. I was astounded, but left class satisfied that a teacher finally cared about making me push myself. It was a great feeling.
Professor Dean is very nice and expresses what appears to be genuine interest in improving the abilities of his students. The actual class periods were pretty laid back, but the projects were very time-consuming and stressful. You'll work your ass off, but you'll also see definite improvement. Recommended.
I put a lot of effort forth, but I found him making discouraging comments. It is a lot of work and you must be able to keep up. Towards the end, I began to get better grades and he was becoming more encouraging. I learned a lot as far as skills, but the class really took a hit on my self confidence. I ended up changing my major.
LOVED him! He helped me improve greatly. He does get side-tracked and tends to lecture more so our in class drawing time does suffer. But what he says is always helpful and he uses sooo many examples. He is always willing to meet up with you if you can't make extra help. DO THE SKETCHBOOK!!! I'd have an A if I spent more time on it.
Dean's a really nice guy, but horribly discouraging sometimes - he's also not one to let anyone get a word in edgewise. If you love gesture drawing, take this class! But be prepared for big multi-part combination in-class and out of class homework assignments, and two sketchbooks on top of that.
Wonderful teacher! I learned so much about drawing, process and art in general. Be prepared for a lot of work, especially in sketchbook assignments.
the most polite, yet horribly discouraging man ever. he will make you never want to draw again. he'll tell you to draw more, and when you do he'll ask you "what is this crap?"
Nice guy, but the class will totally stress you out! The work load is so heavy (big projects and he want you to work in a sketchbook every day apart from assignments)! I also found this class very discouraging! And I love to draw! Another weird thing is in the critique he will say nice things about your work and then give you a "c"!
Henry Dean is the worst professor I have ever taken from. He "liked" me at the beginning of the quarter and now yells at me when I even talk in the class. I would NEVER take a class from him again. He is the most discouraging person to ever talk to. Do yourself a favor and RUN.
he's the nicest person ever but this doesn't show in his grading. HE wants multiple sketchbooks, his first project is time consuming and the ones after that get shorter in terms of quantity but more in quality. IF you don't like your grade do a resubmit it helps. Be prepared for 2 drawing challenges.
Dean is a likable person, with that being said... i wanted to hate him. His personality makes you smile but he gives so much work. The first project was easy but long and tedious- basically sketchbook work. The other projects were more focused on the quality of the final work. Sketchbooks are to be turned in. And he's a harsh grader.
I had him for drawing 100 and 101. He is very detailed yet open about subject matter and materials used for the projects. He is looking for improval and techniques learned and applied to drawings. DO THE SKETCHBOOK. If you want an A you have to go above and beyond. He is a fair grader though and I actually learn how to draw...somewhat.
Dean is super friendly, helpful (extra helps, always answers email even on sundays) and a really hard grader. You're going to be turning in multiple sketchbooks, grades you on PERSONAL improvement so don't think that because you're better than 75% of the class you'll get a A. Put in the work, you'll be amazed by how much better you are at the end.
Dean is SUPER nice and it's obvious he's passionate about teaching! I learned a HUGE amount in this class and enjoyed the projects. However, his directions can be unclear and he tends to ramble during lectures. He can be a harsh grader. DO THE SKETCHBOOKS and extra credit work! Overall, he can be tough but you'll definitely get your money's worth!
Learned a lot from Dean and I can honestly say that I improved based on in-class work and lectures, HOWEVER: he was extremely vague with assignments and feedback. He tended to be an unfair grader at times too, people who would work really hard often got B's.. No textbook required. Would honestly not recommend him as a first choice for Drawing 2..
Professor Dean is all about "the essence." What that means, no one really knows. He is a very very kind and fun man, but incredibly confusing in all aspects of the course. GO TO EXTRA HELP SESSIONS, you get extra credit and can pick his brain about the assignments. I am awful at drawing, but managed a C with tons of hard world and extra credit.
If You love charcoal, trees and the same projects over and over again then he's your man.
He NEVER stops talking about things that don't really help, & always spotchecks people to ask what we're learning (when we aren't). We almost never drew in class & his demonstrations aren't helpful. When people point out how confusing he is, he gets butthurt instead of trying to help. His grading is a mystery. Avoid him. Friendly but not worth it.
I took his first quarter teaching Color Theory, and it was a bumpy ride. He's a very nice person, and focuses much more on content of a piece than the execution, so don't worry if you can' draw. The problem was that he doesn't give much improvement points in his critiques. It's mostly just what you did well.
Henry Dean is a nice guy, I'm not going to lie-- but he isn't an effective teacher. At least not for Color Theory. He never stops talking and always over-explains a topic to the point that no one understands. Grades are fair. Extra credit is abundant. But overall the class might as well be a lecture one. Also: He's obsessed with painting. Obsessed.
Prof. Dean is a really wonderful drawing instructor. Though his class is really intense and a LOT of work, he will go out of his way to help you improve if ask (Go to extra help if you want more 1 on 1 coaching). He allows resubmits on 2 of 4 projects if you aren't happy with your first grade, but don't expect to work on homework a lot in class.
I had him for his first quarter teaching Color Theory. Although he is a very nice person, he's pretty vague on most assignments. He also always spent about half the class talking about things that seemed irrelevant or useless, and he rarely stuck to the schedule he set himself. I did enjoy doing his projects, though.
Dean is great, although his classes are more like lectures and him drawing than you actually drawing. The lectures are highly informative, but tend to take up too much of class time. Really spent a lot of time on gestures as well. Most of your work will be done out of class. If you spend a lot of time on your work, A LOT, then you should be fine.
He is definitely nice (brought us cookies) but is both vague and repetitive. He will organize for the class to do a 100 minute drawing then talk so much of class that we'll have half that time and be let out late. He constantly asks what we're learning as to either check if we're listening or to stroke his ego. He likes hearing that he's "right".
Awful. He will make you hate your life. He is all about himself, and how great the british are. Talent doesn't factor here, it's just if he 'likes' you or not. Academics is not the priority.
Almost impossible to impress but makes you work for it. Blunt and straightforward. draws a lot instead of letting the students drawlearn... We know you can draw. We want to learn to draw.
I have never met someone so willing to take you to the next step on your career. I absolutely loved his class and would take again. If you wanting a free grade this teacher is not for you. I would love to take more of his classes in the future and prob will. His ability to take someone who refuses to evolve and change them is amazing.
I took Dean for Drawing 1, and he is one of the nicest professors I've had at SCAD. If you are already GOOD at drawing, do NOT take him. You will learn nothing. Every project has the same requirements (landscapearchitecture in charcoalgraphite), just worded differently every time. His class and his projects are extremely boring.
I took Life Drawing to learn how to draw the human figure proportionally and anatomically correct. What I got was basically a class on design that just used the human figure. I could have just as easily taken a class on still life drawing and gotten more out of it. Teach me to draw the body, not work composition. I learned that in drawing 1.
No matter how many times I read over the projects, I always miss something important. He lectures more than lets you draw and just obsesses over master studies. He doesn't give easy grades but he does have a lot of extra credit opportunities. When we do draw, he lectures so long about it that we end up leaving a good 10-20 minutes after class ends.
Look, he's a nice guy who cares about his students' well-being. Does he sometimes not make it clear on what wants/expects? No. But you can always ask him! ALWAYS. He's definitely easy to talk to and will give good feedback. His class isn't the worst, so I plan to take him again since he takes the time to get to know his students personally.
Professor Dean is honestly pretty awesome. I took him for Drawing 100 my first quarter at SCAD and I am taking him again for color theory. He's an incredibly knowledgeable teacher and teaches the course material well. You'll get really comfortable with linear perspective, and he pushes you out of your comfort zone while giving you helpful feedback
He is not a bad person, he really cares about his students, BUT, his lectures are long and confusing. We barely did any in class assignments, and most classes were just him rambling about stuff. He is a great artist, and is really passionate about his craft, but I do not feel like a learned much from this class.
Dean is a decent person but the way he grades isnt quantitative so its hard to see where your grade is slacking. Definitely not a class for slackers. You have to really think about your projects and work hard on them. 2 days isn't enough, take all the time you can to work on your projects. And keeping up your sketchbook will raise your grade.
Really cares about student's well-being. If you have trouble finishing projects on time, he usually extends the deadlines. Has something good to say about every piece by every student. Really interesting and fun projects, gives you enough free reign but not to the point of vague-ness. Has a cool accent.
Henry Dean is a good guy-- he will pop popcorn for you during studio time and will offer helpful insight if you are a beginner. As a professor though, he just wasn't for me. He doesn't time manage his class well and cuts students who come in late WAY too much slack. He's not straight forward at all, and never stops talking. Don't take if you can.
Professor Dean is a nice person, even though he's not the best teacher. His critiques are too long, and he waste studio time on lectures. Still, he is always there for you and gives a lot of extra credit. He doesn't push his students enough as he should and is he hasn't a clear grading criteria. He is also very disorganized sometimes, but he tries
I took henry for drawing 1 and again for color theory and he's one of my favorite professors at scad! I personally think that he's a better color theory teacher than drawing1, but he really drills linear perspective into you. He has an amazing eye for color and is an incredible color theory teacher. If you need help, you have to go to him and ask
Henry Dean is awesome. He gives really cool projects and rely cares about your progress and success as an artist. Wish I could take him every year.
Dean is a sweetheart who will try to work with you and really wants to help make you better. There is a lot of sketchbook work, but I promise it's worth it!
Henry Dean is a very caring and passionate professor, however sometimes his feedback was unclear. For Drawing1 expect all of the projects to be worked on outside of class. We did a still life in every class, but were never given credit for the in class assignments. Make sure to do the sketchbooks outside of class as well because they are important.
Dean is a really great person. He's a very caring individual, and wants to make sure you're doing alright. That being said, I dont think he's the best teacher. He goes off topic a lot, and is hard to follow. Also, he's not very clear on his grading criteria. I didnt really learn anything new in his class.
He's a nice guy, but it doesn't change the fact that he turns almost every class into a lecture. Expect to have no in class time to work on projects. His grading system is an enigma. Critiques somehow managed to last the entire two and a half hours of class.
He treats this studio class as a lecture class way too much, and he is a very difficult grader. He is always willing to help you get the grade you need on any given assignment through extra credit. He is super passionate about what he teaches; just his classes can be very boring.
He is very kind and understanding, talk to him one-on-one. You will only cover linear perspective in his class, nothing more. His class is taught in the same style as a lecture class- only note taking with the exception of the last two weeks where only half of the time you're taking notes.
Amazing person, great teacher when he's not distracted. Henry is very caring for his students and gives great 1 on 1 feedback, especially outside of class. In class though, his lectures get long and scattered, your projects are done outside of class while the rare studio time is not graded. Gives you a great foundation for DRAW101.
Dean is a good guy, he's friendly and open-minded if not a tad fickle which should only be expected. Professors aren't meant to go easy on us. I found him very helpful in understanding how to better improve my drawing skills and pick up on minute details better. Only downside is, he's not always clear on due dates.
Henry is a great person, but not so great teacher. His classes felt rushed and thrown together. We never got done what we needed to in class and always had to keep pushing things back, and keep in mind that classes are 10 weeks long. Barely spent any time talking about color theory and felt like an art history class :/
I had 0 drawing experience before taking Henry for DRAW 100, and he's really made me at least semi-competent at drawing. It's a fast paced class, but I went from drawing stick figures to doing a decent replication of a sketch by Van Gogh on week 4. His requirements can be vague, but asking him or going to his extra help sessions cleared things up.
Dean is a very helpful and inspirational teacher. hes very helpful with critiques and office hours. I wouldnt say hes a tough grader, but hes not an easy one. Hes very legit with his grading, and i respect that. He really teaches you the fundamentals of drawing and doesnt throw you into still lifes every class. his class of fun & interactive
Henry Dean really cares about each student which is evident from day one. My problem with Drawing 100 with him was that he treated everyone as if they were already able to draw and did not teach the basics. Henry is a tough grader, but gives you a detailed grading sheet that shows how the assignment was graded for each assignment.
I can't express how much I hate this guy. He spent entire 2.5 hour classes talking about his vacations and then expected sketchbooks filled to the brim with life drawings that we were supposed to be using class time to do. I did not learn a single thing in this class and you can tell by the lack of progress in my sketchbook from that quarter.
Very few times would I not know what he wanted and he always gave great feedback. Hes a bit absentminded but interesting and knows what hes talking about. Most projects had a focus but still let us have a good bit of freedom. Makes the research paper aspect of the class very comfortable and not too pressured.
Henry Dean is a name that will be burned into my soul for all of eternity. He grades harshly, especially if you lack experience. He doesn't teach what you should know. He is arrogant, talking about how experienced he is and I've never actually seen him draw that well! DO NOT TAKE HIS CLASS UNLESS YOU WANT A CHALLENGE AND ALSO TO LEARN NOTHING.
Henry is the opposite of an embracing and inspiring professor. Arrogantly demands you to follow his methods which aren't actually important. Long and useless critiques. Time-consuming sketchbook homework. And NO studio time for assignments!!! I do receive As for every project but have to spend 10+ hours on them. And didn't really learn anything.
I took color theory with this professor. Make sure you do the process book. He means well, but doesn't give a ton of studio time. However, keep your head down and work while he talks and he won't care. Critiques are loooooong. But he's a very intriguing and sweet guy. Don't ever expect to be able to read his handwriting though.
He has given me TONS of feedback. Henry just wants the best for his students, wants them to succeed, and to get as much out of the class as they can. He is very nice and offers lots of extra help sessions. Be ready to participate a lot. He lectures a lot but is constantly giving great advice to set you up for the rest of your schooling years/career
Professor Dean is great! He really creates a 1 on 1 relationship with students. He will really help you grow as a drawer and artist in general regardless of your ability coming into the class. He has extra help sessions every week. It is a fair amount of work outside of class but it is worth it. He has inspired me to always have a sketchbook on me
Henry was an amazing professor. He really cares about the improvement of his students and is willing to accommodate to everyone level of artistic ability. He talks a lot for most of the class but you always end up getting to do some drawing. I took him for DRAW100 and DRAW101 and I loved him both times. Its really a fun and laid back class.
I took Prof Dean for Life Drawing, and I'm very pleased with his class. The workload can be a bit heavy, but you can see your improvement in a short amount of time. Henry cares deeply about his students' growth and happiness in class. He makes class entertaining and will appreciate the work you do. If you're talented the class will be easy and fun.
Henry Dean is an amazing professor. Everyday, Im excited to learn something new and he makes that new materials so achievable. I was absolutely terrified of my Drawing level before this class and his teaching methods definitely boosted my confidence.
Henry Dean is everything I could look for in a professor for first quarter. Hes firm on what he wants but hes also understanding for those who dont have as much experience in drawing. He grades pretty fairly, but his class wont be an easy A. Hes hilarious and fun to be around, and always has opportunities outside of class to help.
Henry is a great foundations teacher. Patient and friendly, while still requiring a decent amount of professionalism and hard work.
Henry is the best professor I've ever had. I've never met someone who cares so much about the students or the material of the class. He gives some pretty long lectures sometimes but a lot of it is very entertaining and inspirational. He's also an easy grader as long as you follow the guidelines. Takes the needs of each student into consideration
I love Henry! I had him my first quarter at scad and the first day of class I accidentally confused my schedule and showed up halfway through the class in tears and he was so nice and still marked me present. He is an excellent teacher and cares very much about your success in his class. He loves what he teaches and loves to teach it.
I took Henry for DRAW 100. I loved him so much in that course, that I only felt comfortable taking him again for DRAW 101. While he gives great feedback and wonderful lectures, the projects aren't terrible, but not really fun to do. He brings popcorn frequently, though. Love the accent.
Professor Dean is by chance my favorite professor at SCAD! He may talk a lot in class, but I find everything he says interesting and inspirational. I would definitely recommend taking draw100 with him if you're a beginner for drawing :)
If you are willing to challenge your self with constantly exploring concepts for your artworks and really grow as an artist, henry is definitely the one to go for! He gives out interesting projects for color theory that allows you certain space to improvise yet also reinforces what you learned from the lectures. Lots of extra help sessions too.
Henry is incredible. He is very unconventional and not like any other drawing professor at SCAD, but you will learn so much. He taught me everything I never thought I'd understand about drawing in one quarter. He gives good demos, lots of time to complete projects, and "soft deadlines" to help with time management. He's also super funny to boot.
He gives good feedback. He loves cross hatching so make sure to include it in your art. He allows resubmits so if youre really unhappy with your grade you do have opportunities to bump it up. He can get a bit carried away when he talks. Honestly not the worst choice for a professor, but I wouldnt recommend him if you absolutely cant draw.
He's definitely a tough bargain. For whatever reason he loved me, but his assignments just didn't do it for me and I did not feel productively challenged.
Professor Dean is such a kind teacher and is always looking to help you to grow as an artist. The way he views art is truly inspirational and allows you to develop as an artist. His projects teach you a lot yet arent overwhelming if you follow his soft deadlines. He offers tons of feedback and extra help sessions. Definitely worth taking his class!
Henry Dean is not only a professor , but a mentor. I recommend when you take his class, you go to all the extra helps you can and maybe even his office hours. It is like the more you see him, you learn something new about him and yourself. He brought out the best in me and other students who have not even drawn a day in their life.
Henry Dean is the best professor I have had at SCAD so far. He does make you work for a high grade, but not in a deterring way. He really makes students feel that they can improve, and focuses mainly on how his teachings are applicable in all majors. I major in photography, and I have learned more in his class than I ever thought I would. Great guy
Dean is a funny man who is passionate about his work, which makes him likable as a person. However, I found his class frustrating and confusing. He makes an effort to foster communication in his class and I admire him for that, but I felt his demos were lacking and assignments did little to grow my abilities as an artist yet were very frustrating.
I have mixed feelings about Henry. His personality is off at times and is a little degrading, but if you can put personal feelings aside, you will learn a ton. He is very knowledgeable. He gives A TON OF WORK for an introductory class. Also, his time management isnt the best and you end up doing most of your work on your own time.
Professor Dean is pretty solid, very knowledgable and clearly cares about his students. He tends to ramble on a lot and gives a ton of work compared to other foundation classes, but you will certainy learn in his class.
Put in the time and effort- he will help you become a better artist. He has so much experience. Every time (he is ALWAYS available!) I brought my work up for critique he accurately told me how long I had spent on it. He told me what techniques I had used and which approach I might try instead. I never knew I could draw how I'm drawing now.
Love this guy so much. He's caring, respectful, and passionate about what he does (plus he's hilarious imo). The key to getting a good grade is going to office hours and extra help. He assigns a heavy workload and rambles a lot, so his expectations can be a bit high, but you'll do well if you show that you genuinely want to learn and improve.
Professor Dean is a really sweet professor and cares a lot about how his students are doing in his class. He does assign a LOT of homework (a sketchbook and an exercise assignment due every week) and you will definitely have to work for your grade but don't stress, he's super lax on deadlines and you will learn a ton if you take him!
Such a great guy. You can tell he has lived a lot of life and is really experienced in what he does. He fosters an inclusive learning environment and will teach you things that you will forever use, in relation to art and life. He is incredibly wise and will always work with you no matter what level of skill you are at. Take his class!
Professor Dean is a great drawing professor. He is genuine and honest. He also appreciates all art no matter your skill level, so if you arent very good at drawing, he will still appreciate your art and help you grow. Hes also just genuinely a funny and kind man. The only thing Id warn about is workload. Its not difficult work but it is a lot.
FILM MAJORS! DO NOT TAKE HENRY DEAN! ESPECIALLY IF YOU CANT DRAW!
A lot of work and tough grader. He does genuinely care abt his students but acts like it is the only class we have. Talks a whole lot about absolutely nothing. Only wants validation and very aggravating at times.
He can find the good points of a drawing you think isn't the best, and he always helps improve even the best of drawings. He's a good teacher
Professor Dean was my favorite professor this quarter. I had never taken a drawing class before but thoroughly enjoyed his class. I loved his traditional approach on drawing and liked that Dean was able to find the good in a drawing, and offered great feedback. He also offered resubmissions and extra help because he wanted you to do your best.
Prof. Dean is the best teacher I have ever had in my life. He cares about your success and will go out of his way to help. If you want to learn how to draw take this class!
Henry Dean is the sweetest and most understanding teacher I have had at SCAD. He actually made me excited to go to class. As long as you communicate with him about what you're struggling with he will help and work with you. He is a very tough grader. Like i am a very good drawer and submitted all my work on time but still have a C.
Professor dean probably my favorite professor till now. He really cares about his students, and give professional advice and feedback to students
This was my second time taking prof. Dean-- please take him!! He is a great professor and taught me so much about drawing over my two classes with him. He is very caring and wants you to learn and improve. He always gives kind and supportive feedback and is never harsh when giving advice. His British accent is very calming to me.
Hands down the best DRAW prof I've had this year. He's really chill and makes a point to make sure that we see that we're improving with each assignment. There is a lot of work for the class, but it is worth it and pays off when it comes to the exercises or projects. He also hold office hours and extra help sessions all the time which is helpful.
a very work heavy course focused on "teaching you to draw the human form" but mainly you learn how to copy someone else's artwork. we had at least four master copy assignments. you don't draw in class and there were many days where we just were lectured.
Henry dean is a very nice man. However, Hes a little all over the place and tends to lose track of time. Also he gives very bad instructions. but like hes really sweet and grades super easily. Also get ready for every lectures
Very sweet, caring & understanding. Provided plenty of help outside class, good feedback & insight for improvement & allowed resubmissions. But he was unorganized, often confused & bad at giving instructions. VERY lecture heavy class, hardly got to draw which was most disappointing. I took him for draw100 too. That was a much better experience.
Prof. Dean is a kind, caring person. He spends a lot of time lecturing, but sometimes the assignment briefs are unclear. However, he is available multiple times throughout the week to help if you're unsure. Overall, a great professor.
I love Prof. Dean. He's just a short little British man. He was so understanding when I didn't have access to a printer or I did assignments a little more different than what was expected. Overall, he's super flexible and really just such a great person! He IS very honest, though. Don't bring any mechanical pencils to class LMAO
I would totally recommend Prof. Dean! He is such a kind guy who will drop everything to help you understand something, and is so passionate about what he does. There is a good amount of hw, but he is very flexible with deadlines and tends to do "soft" deadlines. During critiques, he always gives really good feedback to help make your work better.
Henry Dean is definitely a character and I have to say I truly improved so much from his lectures. Critiques are very thorough and he loves lose deadlines. I spent the most hours on his homework but I genuinely looked forward to his class. I would take a class with Henry again.
Prof Dean definitely grew on me. Hes very nice but his teaching style wasn't really for me. Next to no time in class to work, more of a lecture class than a drawing class. He does give a lot of homework at the beginning, it dies down as the quarter continues. He is a hard grader and will call you out in class.
Mr. Dean isn't a bad teacher, his class just isn't engaging or challenging. He usually uses class time to lecture about drawing instead of actually letting you draw. He sends sketchbooks to do out of class which were pretty annoying but nothing hard, his class overall is really easy. If you just do the assignments and whatever he tells you to fix.
Great guy, I loved his class. I feel like I learned so much from him, but that does come with the cost of doing a lot of work. Lots of assignments, and there's usually more than one going on at one time. Very little class time is dedicated to these assignments and they're pretty time consuming. Heavy workload but fun class.
You can tell he cares about all of his students and really does want everyone to succeed. Having never drawn before he was very understanding and helpful. He made me a lot more confident/better in my drawing abilities!
Professor Dean is a super sweet and caring professor. He understands that everyone comes into his class with dramatically different levels of experience and he cares more about your progression than your skill. He does assign a ton of work and gives no class time to do it so expect a lot of homework, but he does give excellent feedback.
Dont take this professor unless you are a drawing major! Professor Dean is not terrible but he acts like everybody in the class is a drawing major when the majority of us aren't. He assigns big drawing projects and expects expert level drawing! I would discourage anybody from taking this professor unless you are going into drawing as your major.
I found Prof Dean's critiques incredibly insightful! That being said, we didn't do as much drawing from models as I would've hoped during this course. The midterm and final project were fun though. He's very sweet to chat with I just wish he didn't spend majority of class time lecturing or demoing. Lots of out of class sketchbook assgnmnts as well.
Prof.Dean was my first drawing teacher ever and he made me absolutely love drawing. He's tough and gives a good amount of outside-of-class work but I would say if you want to further ignite a passion for drawing take him!!! He's also the sweetest.
I loved having Professor Dean, he is very helpful and will give you great feedback. He gets to know his students and genuinely cares about how you are doing. I will say we had to do most of our work outside of class and didn't get almost any studio time to work on our actual graded projects, which was the only downside to the class.
Henry Dean is a great professor. He is passionate and very caring to his students. I would say sometimes when he lecture its often got drifted off to something else related so I got confused. Other than that, he knows what's he teaching, his demos are great and he doesn't make it look too hard to achieve what's he's showing. Very supportive!!
Prof. Dean is a passionate teacher who really cares about his students' growth. The class has a heavy workload, but he's flexible with deadlines. I found Unstuck study helpful for practice and prep. It's a challenging but rewarding course if you're willing to put in the effort.
Prof. Dean is very passionate about art and it shows! He gives amazing feedback, no matter if it's a sketchbook assignment or your final. He does have a tendency to go on long-winded critiques sometimes, along with a lot of work being completed outside of class due to the lecture being the focal point of the classes. But overall, great professor!
Henry was a very good teacher, I did have his class during the summer so maybe I recieved more attention and made the experience better, but he definitely taught me so much about drawing and made me realize how good of an artist I am. He was lenient with homework as well and will speak very wise words to you.
The class was difficult at times, especially for me, having not done any drawing like this in years. However, he was a helpful guide throughout the year. He encouraged us to give each other critiques but also critiqued us himself. He would help one-on-one during the class, too. I highly recommend.
This professor is geniuanly so nice and willing to help you and inspire you. Has the best!
This is my fav prof I've had so far!! Hes really fantastic and really gets to know all his students, so he wont be as tough on you if you're an acting major whos never picked up a pencil before. He gives excellent feedback and he's very accommodating. Be sure to participate on the class discussion as much as you can… Not mandatory, but very helpful
Professor Dean is very knowledgeable, he does his best to connect with his students and it was really amazing to be in his class. He emphasises what he is teaching which makes it clear to understand what he wants. He also gives demonstrations on how to draw, for example a still life arrangement. I would definitely take his classes again.
His criteria is always based on favoritism. It doesn't matter if you follow the rubric, if he doesn't like you, you won't receive a good grade.
I loved taking his class. He helped develop my confidence in drawing. He sees the good in people and in their effort. Tons of homework. Also, tons of opportunities to participate.
I had Henry my first ever quarter of scad. I'm a sophomore now and I wish I could take him again. He really cares about his students success especially compared to other teachers I've had. He was very supportive and I learned a ton from his class!
my favorite professor of the quarter! he was super motivating and gave great feedback.
