Very energetic.Keeps each lecture lively. His mult choice tests are not too hard.
call him Hank = A
He is always in a good mood. His tests are a bit wordy and not always clear.
Really cares about his students
No Comments
an easy A if you can stand him.
Watch the test questions...they may be from next weeks lecture.
Tests from lecture notes that he writes on board. Great professor!
Outlines over material in class, funny and nice guy, easy class!
i looove this class! he's very interesting. test is on notes he writes on board
EVERYTHING is in the notes, show up= get a good grade
He is a goofball, which makes the class more interesting. His tests are a little wordy, but overall if you studied his notes, you will get at least a B. I really like his organization in making outlines..let's you know what will exactly be on the test.
lectures easy but makes mistakes on testings
his tests are all based off the notes he writes in class...so go to class and u will pass...nice guy, interesting class.
go to the study sessions if you want an A the hardest thing is his comprehensive final keep your notes!
One of the most boring instructors at SDSU. If you can stay awake in his class and stand not going to the restroom for 2 hours then take this boring guy. He will not let you use the restroom, it is written all over his syllabus. I think that is illegal.
BORING.......long classes. test are somewhat hard. oh did I say BORING?
his tests are really wordy and he doesn't really stick to his point in his lectures
Easy, interesting class. Just pay attention, must read book, though it's interesting too. He's nice and loves to teach, cares about students.
Great class, very interesting. He loves the subject and makes you interested in it. You will do well if you attend class and read the book. Keeps you in class the entire time!!!
The class is great! He's a very animated guy who keeps the class interesting. Enjoys and respects his students' questions and comments in class. As long as you attend class and do the readings you'll do fine.
awesome teacher...you actually learn something and its not hard at all...tests are all from lecture...interesting class
Cool guy with lots to teach. No need to read the material, just go to class, do your questions and take good notes. Also, attend the study sessions-all the questions are from the test!
Great teacher and very interesting class. As long as you go to class and do the readings, you'll do fine. His notes are very organized, and even the reading is interesting.
He's the bomb! Hella cool guy with lots of energy, just make sure you go to class and read.
Cool professor. Has 3 short quizzes and one final with 50 ques. No papers or projects. Make sure you go to class, he counts attendance. Writes out the notes for you on the overhead. Only bad thing is that he keeps you the whole time. Don't take Clanton!!!
HARD!!! Test material does not come from lectures. Takes attendance every class and grade is affected by missing it. Class is really boring! He's kinda weird too
grades on attendance. test are wordy and hard, but go to study sessions they help. nice teacher, he writes all the notes down on overhead so you get all the important notes. interesting class.
This class is not that bad. Go all the time because he takes attendance and writes all the notes on the overhead. The tests are pretty wordy, especially the final which is cumulative.
Takes attendance every day and keeps you the whole time. lecture can be very boring and he is annoying but tests are simple if you go and take notes.
What can I say Prof. Johnston is awesome. Attend all class mtgs, do readings & questions (5 quest. you have on readings), 3 exams, 2 quizzito's & 1 Final. BUT !!!!! you gotta participate for him to notice you.
This class was so-so, BUT! (if you take the class, you'll understand) Professor Johnston is cool. Kinda a lot of reading. But overall not bad.
Great professor! Loves to teach and really likes to emphasize on what will be covered on the test. Has pop quizes, but luckily its from the lecture he held in class the hour before. Lots of notes, lots of reading, but overall great teacher.
I thought it was a really hard class for an exploration class. It is not an easy A class. You have to work really hard to get a good grade. Attend every class!
study sessions were useless.that especially sucked because the final was cumulative and we got no help on that.go over old notes he says..yeah..thats a lot of notes..gives study guide but too broad. If u care 4 your grade, avoid if possible...really.
This class is hard. The books used are hard to understand and the "quizzitos" are confusing and hard.I attended all classes, did work and barely passed. But he is a great professor.
Very strange prof. He always had a smile on his face but I never felt like he really cared or enjoyed teaching. To me he seemed fake and a bit scatterbrained...but most other students really liked him cuz he gave lively lectures.
Too bad I had to drop the class, but this guy was great. Really loved his major and it showed. Will leave more when I retake the class.
Interesting at times... BUT!!! boring at times as well. he does try to make it entertaining though. he's personable and funny (he tries to be at least). The tests are pretty easy, except for a few tricky questions... overall a good class
He takes attendance every day and will know your name by the first 4 weeks of class. I am not one to participate inclass, but he will call on you anyway...and it helps to learn the material. Lots of notes and helpful study guides for the tests.
class is boring as hell. he tries to be entertaining, doesn't always work. go to class and you'll pass. notes are study guides no reason to read books. he goes over everything. take him for an easy A, just remember your starbucks or redbull b4 class!
great professor. nice, makes class interesting. gives you everything you need to know in the class notes. have to go to every class, but class is interesting. tests a little hard, but not too bad.i highly recommend him.
Great professor. Takes attendance every day, but it's worth it to go. VERY organized teaching style- take the notes. Tests are fair -do the reading and study the notes...but most importantly GO TO THE STUDY SESSIONS he has before the test. They are worth it! Really interesting material too.
This teacher rocks. Sure it may not be the most interesting subject but he keeps it lively. Sit in the front of the class it will help u stay awake if you get bored easily. DEFINITELY A GREAT TEACHER! Go to the study sessions they give u study guides!!
Dr. Johnston is a wonderful teacher. He is very enthusiastic about his subject! He takes attendance every day. He gives great outlines to copy. Study sessions are also very helpful as you are given a study guide for the test. Highly recommended!!!
He is a strange character. Pretty dorky. Many out burst to "keep class awake" he says. Takes attendence. Takes points if absent. Many pop quizzes. 3 tests, final comprehensive. Go to study sessions, read books, attend class often, take good notes (aside from his notes) kind of hard but read read rea
Great teacher and funny guy. Most won't get his unique sense of humour, but it was great. My 2nd time through the class, since I got an incomplete last time. Just pay attention and do the homework and you'll get an A. Don't miss a class either he is a stickler for attendance.
Dry subject, but he knows it and tries to keep things lively. Makes note-taking easy and organized with his outlines. 4 tests and they are pretty hard, but go to the study sessions (which sometimes help.) Do all the homework assignments, no need to actually read the books, but you do have to buy them. Go to class, attendance is part of the grade.
thought this class would be interesting but it sucked. was cool at first, but turned into an econ class during the last half. johnston is cool, i loved him for 410. i found this class a lot harder than 410. i got an A in 410, but barely got a B- in 450.
he is a good teacher but you MUST go to class... he takes attendence everyday.... hates late people. Take good notes and read all assigned readings. Funny guy, but a little weird sometimes.
he is very organized. the exams are straight of the very clear notes. 3 tests and a final but attendance is IMPORTANT. he is enthusiastic and obviously loves to teach but dont expect to breeze through any of his classes. pretty funny and super nice.
He turned an interesting class into a fun class. Hes one of the few professors that can captivate and stimulate the minds of his students. Copy his outlines from the screen---and study them before the exams, read and do the weekly questions, along with showing up to class on time and participating and u should get no less than a B. the readings ez.
his class is very hard, he is very organized, attendance counts a lot , and the weekly questions do as well. study sessions are very helpful, you must read the book. i wouldnt recommend this professor to anyone
Funny guy to listen to. More entertaining than interesting. His class is deceitfully hard though. Attendence is a big part of your grade. 3 tests and a final. Each test is approx 33 questions multiple choice. He does not curve so you can't miss many and paas. Very tough "A." Nobody in my class got an "A." I busted my butt for a "B."
Excellent professor! Hold your attention and makes the subect interesting. You have to go to class, but that keeps you doing well in his class. He types the notes with you and you just copy them down. If you do that and pay attention you'll get an A for sure! Definitely one of the best classes I've had at State!
If you took Johnston for 410, expect more of the same in 450. He is such an enthusiastic professor! Study guides really help on the exams. I thought this class was a little easier than 410.
Johnston is cool, he is a funny guy and his class was pretty easy. BUT!!!!! he takes attendance so you have to go to class.
Very well organized and a good lecturer. Overall the class was great. Sucked that missing one day of class to actually participate in a movement for social change hurt my grade.
This teacher is very nice. Class is interesting and he writes the notes with us so we don't miss anything. Tests are pretty much based on lecture. Read the books and you'll do just fine. Questions are pretty straight forward.Great teacher.Take him!
He's a swell guy but I felt that while I understood his material when he was teaching it, it never seemed to transcend the same way on the exams, even with the study guides. I wasn't the only one that felt that way. Attendance counts with weekly questions. His cumalitive final was ridiculous. I won't lie, the class is more of an easy B, not an A.
This class is not easy so you really have to study hard and read the book which he assigns. You can't just memorize his lectures because most part of the test are from the book. Overall he's a fun teacher. If you don't understand something just ask him after class and he'll explain it to you clearly. Good professor.
The person before is wrong. Everything in lecture is on the quizzitos (which are exams). No need to do the reading -passed his exams by merely studying lecture notes. If you're smart you'll realize how fake he really is and how he does not practice what he teaches. But most people liked him because he was an engaging lecturer. Beware his hypocracy.
The class was straightforward and clear. Most of the exam questions are from the lecture notes but you must read to get an A. He is nice and on occasion fun.

Hated this class!! Not only did he act like he was god's gift to man, he was soo intentionally mean. Don't miss ever and don't rely on him for help. Great class and you can do well on your own, but teacher was LAME!
I really liked his class.I like the fact that he uses powerpoint and the tests are based on the lectures.Overall B++
Class is cahllenging but the lectures are fun. Very informative, but you must study hard to get a good grade.
Good teacher. Just read and use the study guides and you will do fine. Very nice guy. Attendance is mandatory though
I loved taking this class because Johnston is very intelligent and will teach you a lot if you are open to it. If you are a slacker don't take the course because you need to read and attend if you want an A. I only missed 3 days all semmester and got a B+ which was a little lower than I thought I deserved but still good obviously.
Dr. Johnston is a great professor. His lectures are fun and full of information. I like how he doesn't use powerpoint slides for his lectures. He tests hard, and can ask really difficult questions. But if you go to his office hours for questions about the exams his willing to help.
He's a good teacher for the most part - a little condescending at times if you go to talk to him after class. He -will- call you out for not attending lecture. The class is based off 3 or 4 large tests, and some pop quizzes. There is weekly homework.
dreadfully boring subject. attendance is a MUST.lots of reading. test questions from reading and lectures.test ?'s are kinda tricky. no short cuts with this course you gotta read, go 2 class and study 2 get a good grade. he says he wants a relationship with his students but he was kinda rude 2 me during office hours good teacher but boring content
Awesome teacher...highly recommend him, you do have to attend because he grades you at the end on attendance but if you do go to class it makes studying so much eaiser because the material is very interesting in this course. 3 tests and a final (that was for summer school) Tests are not that hard, and i am normally a horrible test taker!
took him for 355, 410, and soon 457. good prof. very knowledgeable in soc, most of what you need to know 4 exams is in class lecture. read the book too, or at least browse it b4 an exam. got b's in both 355/410, with not to much effort, i recommend. 4 exams - final is ****ulative w/last sect, attendance, class participation n u'll do fine
one of my favorite professors at state so far! i loved 410 and plan on taking 450. 3 tests and a final that he gave out really good study guides for. attendence is mandatory but i actually enjoyed going to class, so that was fine. i definately recommend him :)
everything is pretty straight forward. his study guide did get a bit lazy towards the end and his class is pretty boring, but thats it, he is a good teacher and he trys to make lectures funny.
need to attend class... but very entertaining. the class is pretty easy.
easy teacher, easy A
he takes an entire lecture to talk about something that should not take more then 5 min. you understand it at first but since he wants to kill time you end up getting confused. he has no personality. he has a Phd and takes row "how lame", he should spend those 10 min actually teaching, not making students write down what he says to write and memori
Its like econ, he takes roll everyday!i wasnt interested at all.
Class was hard. His lecture was very abstract. Attendance is very mandatory!! If you miss your class, it will hurt your grade. Reading the textbooks a lot, and teacher tends to give the tricky quizs. And, Final quiz is harder!
Attendance is mandatory (will lose points if you are out). A lot of reading and note taking but if you do the study guide, go to study session, and take notes on the readings you will get an A. Final exam was tough...pay attention to Experiments mentioned in last reading.
this class is ok he takes role every calss but its random. small 5? reading assignments are due tues& miny quizez in class thurs so I recommened going & it helps to understand ¬ have to read to much. he's pretty funny and class isnt too boring, he's an ass about leaving class. the finals pretty hard but in the end its really not to bad of a clas
attendance is mandatory, 5 questions on reading due weekly, three tests and one final. I worked REALLY hard and got a B. Definitely not easy but he is a great professor, very interesting and keeps things new and fresh. I would take another class with him for sure. DO not take if you are trying to get an easy A though
One of the worst Classes/Professors I've ever taken. He's rude, condescending, makes really annoying jokes in class. Class is mandatory for sociology majors, so if you don't HAVE to take this class...i wouldn't recomend it. Class is also not interesting!
There are only at most 45 minutes of actual content in each class - He artificially extends the lecture to fill the classtime
He takes roll, unappealing
OH and definitely talk to "ROSS" before taking this class. hahaha you'll see what i mean
Smart and funny teacher, classes are challenging but the content is very interesting. However he has very little time to give any extra help to students and utilizes his TA's heavily. If you do everything that is expected of you an easy B is achievable in this class.
I thought the class was challenging, but in a good way. The learning material was very interesting and it kept me engaged in the class. I would highly recommend going over the readings thoroughly, because a lot of his test questions are based on specific readings. Perfect attendance and completing the assignments is key as well.
This class is pretty easy. Go to all the lectures, they're boring but he does pop quizzes that are really easy and straight from the notes. I skimmed the reading and have done well on all the tests. He does like to take specific questions from the blackboard readings. Overall, an interesting and easy class.
Overall pretty good class. The content wasn't all that exciting for me but Johnston tries to make it interesting. You have reading and questions due every week, pop quizzes that you'll ace if you pay attention during the lecture, and 5 exams. TAKE ADVANTAGE OF THE STUDY SESSIONS WITH THE TA'S. Seriously, they are a life saver for exams.
Johnston definitely understands the subject. His lectures and the reading assignments are long a detailed. Take good notes. Take advantage of the study sessions with his Teaching Assistants That's the surest way of getting a study guide for the exam. The course is point intensive. Johnston can be very manipulative. Stay on top of your work.
No organization to his class or notes at all. Tests are hard and he gives no true indication of whats going to be on them. Lots of reading, no direction or help.
Johnston's class was my least favorite class since I've been at SDSU. His material is dry and biased towards his ideology. He gives pop quizzes based on the amount of people in attendance. Do every single reading question and each and every extra credit he gives out. Not a super difficult class to pass, but hard to sit through the lecture.
The professor tries to be very knowledgeable of the topic, but he just tries too hard. Read the books. Always go to TAs study sessions. Do all extra credit he offers. Don't expect from him a lot, not even an email response. Just bad.
Taking SOC 355 right now online. Way too much unnecessary busy work. The assignments are not aimed to actually help you learn, but to make sure that you have to waste too many hours during the week completing work for this class. You're forced to participate in online discussions and to ask questions even if you have none. Don't take this class.
I ve never taken a class like that since I have been in school. Not only the professor is unorganized, but refuse to work with students. His tests and exams are timed with questions that required time to think. His materials are confusing. Instructions from previous classes are carried over to new class. This is frustrating!
Difficult class. Tests/quizzes are based on the reading and there is A LOT. Learned a lot and loved the concepts but wouldn't take again. I took it over the summer so the class was more chill but, I couldn't imagine taking this class with a full load.
The topic is very interesting and one that may help you outside of class, but it's a shame that he isn't good at teaching it. It was an online class, so we had to watch at times hours-long lectures based on slides, which made the class boring. He is also very disrespectful and condescending. If you don't need to take the class, please don't take it
He never answers your emails, he uses outdated lectures and he would hold you accountable for anything that he wants, he's not clear and he is not willing to help at all. I had to drop because of how ignorant this man is!
He is very disrespectful, he would delete your questions and discussions if he wanted to. Please don't take his class, our whole summer class is failing! He ignores everyone.
Honestly seems like a nice guy. He's strange he basically said in the syllabus don't email him. His exams and "quizitios" are worded strangely, so make sure you watch his lectures and know the readings he provides. Didn't read textbooks much personally, don't buy free PDFs online. 15 mini-quizzes, 5 exams, 6 DB posts, 5 homework Qs assignments
Homestly, this professor was the wost. His tests and quizess are extremely hard. No extra credit. Taken during summer. One mimute per question. Not enough time to think. Passed final through groupme.
Dr. J, ignored all the students that asked for help. He suggested they seek services from the school. He did not make accomadations. A students brother passed away and he suggested seeking psychological service. Wow. Honestly, work together to pass this class. Only take it if you have too.
Professor Johnston is by far the worst professor I've ever had. There's way too much work every week his quizzes/tests don't reflect what is in the study guide. When I asked him for support because I was struggling in class, he referred me to psychological services rather than helping me... He makes me regret spending money on an education.
