Teacher known to convert students to anthropology majors.
Class is very easy. Easy A if you get old tests...he recycles questions.

Enthusiastic, good lecturer, easy tests

EASILY the best teacher at this school. He is enthusiastic, funny, smart, interesting, accomplished in his field. It doesn't hurt that he's a cute little guy, and just makes u wanna smile all the time. The material is hard, but interesting for ant majors.

Awesome class, great teacher. Funny, enthusiastic, makes the material very interesting.
Excellent teacher, knows his material, from Harvard, Buddhist philosophy makes him quite happy and never angry. Easy midterms, and lectures are sometimes confusing. Highly recommended to all students!!
Very easy to understand and creates a very friendly and relaxed atmosphere.
A very adorable man who gives lengthy and slow lectures that are very difficult to stay awake in. Otherwise the information would be helpful, but morning lectures are just painfully boring.
he is an AMAZING teacher...really tries to make the lectures interesting...classes never go as long as they are supposed to which is always nice...the practice midterms online are almost exactly like the actual midterm...all lecture notes are online
he is such a nice teacher and is passionate about his subject, easy class if you keep up with the lectures and readings, 2 papers which were a bit annoying, but a good class nonetheless
best teacher on the campus. every morning he said, hello class and thank you for coming! such a great old man.
Best professor on campus. Ask him to sing the hominid song.
this guy is quite dope...if lectures werent as early id be staying awake. does his best to teach and humor the class, and does it pretty well. papers are meh, but tests are alrite if u study enough. haha he can sure jam tho. go hominid song!
I heard he sang once, but I missed that lecture :T
He is basically too much fun to miss, too good of a teacher to be in Davis. This Harvard man knows his material like the the bald spot on his head.
Very Cool Person, kinda boring lectures, but its alright. Its an easy class. Study here and there and you will be fine. Easy A for me! I missed the lecture where he sang, but i heard it was da bomb!
One of the best teachers I've ever met. He bails all the losers that never study and enjoys it as well. The hominid song is freaken AWESOME!!!
Hilarious! While the subject matter was not particularly of my interest, his personality made coming to class enjoyable and his knowledge of his subject is astounding.
He is a hands down the best teacher I've had so far. He is very knowledgeable and passionate about what he does, and he really makes the class enjoyable. I recomend that if you ever take anthro, take it with him.
guarenteed to get A if you go to class
I had this class in 1984 and never forgot it, nor the material. Soooo glad to know that McHenry still rocks!
did not like lab
First off great accent, and great sense of humor.Passionate about subject.semi-Challenging class and meterial but is definitely manageable.Lab can be tedious, but lectures are fun.Great class for incoming freshman, only with McHenry though not Rodman.
SOOOO great. he was so cute with his little tan line on his bald head! he taught the class in a great way and the material wasn't tricky. He sang, had guest lecturers, and was funny. I loved him!
Great teacher..much easier than Dr. Isbell (she's awful!!) Pretty intersting lectures, and fairly easy tests...go to class and definately go to lab and you'll do fine!! Nice guy and he's helpful!
awesome
He's so much fun. Besides being enthusiastic, he tells funny jokes and even sang to us about the stuff we were studying. His test were multiple choice, but still a litle difficult. He's very approachable and likes to help his students.
McHenry is the coolest guy ever. He freaking sang to us about Habaline. C'mon people, who would do that for you?!
He is so silly!!!! You never want to nap because he is so funny in his own little way. This class was very interesting and pretty common knowledge. I say everone take this class from MCHENRY!!!!!
He is the best professor I have ever had! And my TA Nikki was great too! I loved the class material, and I never missed a lecture or a lab. The midterms aren't that bad and you get a final grade of A if your overall percentage is 85% or above. Definitely take this class, even as just an elective!
Mchenry was a great teacher. I loved going to his class. His material was easy to understand and he made the class so fun for me. The TA's were great. He's a very calm man and keeps the class alive with his innocent humor. I reccommend him especially for a Anthropology class. He sings too!!
he was great fun... if i had any other teacher i dont know if i would have gotten up for the class. considering we are in COLLEGE... it's a fairly easy class as long a you pay some attention, and how could u not? he loves what he's teaching. Lab's are easy and enjoyable... if you're into anthro :)
Good morning class...thank you for coming... oh, if i could just hear that one more time...
He's got a fantastic sense of humor, great TA's, and freakin' sings at the end of the quarter. McHenry is by far the best teacher I've had yet. I enjoyed his class so much that I'm planning on taking one of his upper division classes later on.
i can honestly say that there is no other profesosr that comes close to being as great as mchenry. he's got an amazing sense of humor and a passion for what he does. he really cares about his students. i love you mchenry!
REALLY great teacher. Even though the material wasn't extremely intersting at some points, he did his best to make it so. Take a class from him!!!
He's absolutely the BEST! Take him if you have to take ANT 1. He is fun and it is very easy to get an A in the class if you study. I got by without reading the book and I got an A. Just utilise the study guides and the sample exams he gives. You can tell he loves to teach and cares that we learn
This Prof. is AMAZING! He lets you really get into the subject, even if your not really into the evolutionary bio stuff. I didn't really like the part on human ancestors, it was very difficult and the TA was aweful, but McHenry was cool, and always posted the lectures for easier understanding.
He's very funny, cute little guy. Lectures are somewhat engaging, always let us out early. Tests are REALLY hard, mostly all T/F. Attending lecture isn't always important because he posts notes online before class.
Wonderful Prof, best I've had so far at Davis. Very helpful. Test have a lot of material on them, but they are very similar to the practice tests.
Professor McHenry is a wonderful professor. His lectures are all on powerpoint slides, so it is easy to be on track in the class. His midterms are similar to past midterms that he gives out for practice. Get a hold of these old midterms and you'll do fine. I recommend him for ANT 152.
He sings and recites poetry about anthropology.
So sweet, the cutes smile ever, made me want to go to class. Study hard, go to class, study the notes and you'll do fine! One of, if not the nest teacher at Davis!!
Good professor, hard class. Study, Study, Study. I always felt I was bothering him during office hours but his lectures were good. The TA's are SO BAD. None of them are any help at all and Erin thinks she's God's gift to bio-anthro. She will try very hard to make you feel stupid.
Study for the tests because they're relatively hard. A lot of true false with a lot of facts and one thing could be wrong, so know your facts. Sometimes boring during lecture.
Lectures were interesting. Exams are reasonable, and they're all from his lecture notes. He posts all lecture notes online. He also gives a huge curve. I got 71%, but after curve it's a B! Good class, good professor...highly recommended!
I really enjoyed his class!
always says good morning to u. his exams only count for 15% of your grades. He also curves the exams and is really generous on grades. Always has a pleasant smile and lectures are boring, but if u don't stay up, u can always read them online. Also, the labs makes u understand it more. My TA was a big help. I recommend mchenry.
His midterms have very tricky wording and hard are hard. Though it is multiple choice he has answers such as "all the above", "none of the above", "a and b only". Material can be tough to get through and understand. He's very open to questions though, he is very nice and always seem happy. Hardness of tests are killing the interest for the subject.
Tests can be challenging because of the tricky true/false and multiple choice questions. But otherwise, he's a really good teacher. Enthusiastic about subject matter, has a really gentle and happy way of speaking, and plays/sings a song on the guitar about anthro. :D
McHenry is the best teacher ever. Lectures are worth going to because he will keep you intrigued about the subject. The tests can be a little tricky. Just pay attention to the wording of the questions and go to sections and you'll be fine.
McHenry is the cutest little man i've ever seen. He's so enthusiastic about what he teaches, and even though classes can be long, its worth it to go to hear him say, "Good Morning Class"
McHenry is the NICEST/CUTEST prof! very cheerful, always smiles, always thanks us for coming to class, really enthusiastic, very clear/straightfwd lectures. TAs are kinda hard graders, tests are tricky so study, lectures are online so that's convenient. Start papers early, get TA to look them over.
Professor McHenry is the best professor at Davis. He is very nice and enthusiastic about the class. His lectures are interesting and fun. The midterms are challenging but worth the work. I definitly recommend this class.
He is a good professor but very very boring. Despite what other people say the class was not much fun but he is a really cute old man and does seem to care about his students. The midterms are pretty hard so study all your notes. I didnt do the reading or go the class because the notes are pretty clear.
Cares about his students, makes a good effort to keep things interesting. I was a little bored in this class because most of the material wasn't new to me or didn't interest me. class is pretty easy if you make an effort to go and study his lecture notes. the TA's write the tests, so sometimes the questions are written badly.
McHenry was FUNNY! He sang to us! The material is a little dry, but the tests are very specific. Labs were not very helpful, but the 2 papers really helped put the topics in context.
Very interesting, especially if you do all the readings! It is hard to keep up all the time but it's worth it. Contrary to what some dummy says below, the TAs do not write the tests. Lots of times they haven't even seen the tests before they're given. And yes, the tests are hard. But overall the class is very, very good and interesting.
This was a hard class but Mc Henry makes up for it. He sings and recites poetry about Anthro and gets really excited. Lots of little details that you need to keep straight and assigned to different organisms. It gets confusing. Labs aren't very helpful at all.
sweet old man. provides lecture notes. A from 85 up, B from 76 up, so a pretty easy course. TA's are super helpful. the 2 papers are pretty easy! material gets hard, but he's the easiest out of them all and curves great! i got an A
McHenry is such a great professor! I thought the material itself was boring but he tried to make everything interesting! He's very enthusiastic and funny. Great professor
The class was extremely boring. It seemed that he tried to make up for it with jokes here and there, but it falls real short of being funny. Slept through almost every class, and time just drags on. The labs are pointless and a waste of time, but the notes are given to you in an outline form for entire class. I would say dont waste ur time.
One of the best teachers I have ever had at Davis. Full of life! You can tell this man is happy.
this guy was a great teacher, but his class could be a bit boring. labs had no point whatsoever. he was pretty funny though, and some of those films he showed us were really interesting. the class isnt that hard either, the tests were very similar to his practice exams and his lecture notes are sometimes copied directly onto the tests.
McHenry is a good man. He's published many papers and is very well respected in the Anthropology community.
Probably one the of the smartest people on the entire planet yet is very approachable and student friendly. Take his classes!!!
He's a cool guy like people say but if you are not an anthro mager and is considering taking it for one of your breadth courses, don't. It's not worth the work. It's pretty hard. It ain't like the easy lower division Anthro.
Amazing teacher, and I really mean it. He is full of enthusiasm for the subject, as well as for helping his students. The tests and papers are very closely related with the coursework of the class. Midterm comes straight from the lecture notes. An all-around intelligent and nice guy.
I love this class. It's really interesting, and he really likes it too. His powerpoints are bit longwinded, and at the end of lecture he has a tendency to go through them too quickly, but they're available online. He's goofy, and I don't mind the lectures. Often lets us out early, too, which is awesome.
McHenry's class was my first ever college lecture class and he really set the standard for what I expect out of a professor. I recommend this class to everyone. The papers and labs are really helpful, tests are fair, and the lectures are to the point.
It is definitely not a chore to go to henry m. mchenry's lectures!he has an unexpected sense of humor which keeps you awake even at 9 in the morn.the tests are ok, they mostly come from lecture notes but if you really want an A then read the accompanying chapters in the book.I strongly recommend taking this class.
very boring, and he makes you do pop quizs so you have to attend class
One of the best!
Professor McHenry is AMAZING. He is world renouned in the field and seriously knows his stuff. Such a sweet and funny guy. He starts every lecture with "good morning class". I don't need any more anthro for my major, but I would take more anthro classes just to have him as a teacher.
McHenry is a nice, funny dude. The midterms/final can have some very tricky questions. Also make sure to attend class on time because of pop quizzes worth 5-10% of grade. You might miss it if you're 10 minutes late like i was! =(
he is the nicest professor! even though notes are posted online, you feel guilty not attending class because he is so nice. theres popquizes so you have to attend class. his tests are mp and t/f so they can be tricky. overall, verygood professor!
He's a very nice professor. Always smiling and cheery. He even sings to you towards the end of the quarter. Grading is very fair. I did my work, went to class, worked hard, did well on midterms, essays, and the final and got an A. It's not too difficult. Textbook is useless for studying but necessary to do essays.
McHenry is the coolest professor EVER! Intersting topic, well done slides, moderate tests (though there are 3 pop quizes), he's helpful, and internationally recognized as one of the leading evolutionary anthropologists of this century. McHenry is just a great guy, really funny too!
pop quizzes!!!!!!! get to class on time! i missed 2 pop quizzes and i didnt even know until the end.
Interesting class, interesting professor...class is not too difficult. Reading is assigned, but not mandatory. Exams not too difficult, just multiple choice. Two essays... good ge/exploratory class
Pretty much one of the greatest professors I have ever encountered. He is clear and speaks in great detail. He really knows his stuff. He's funny AND he even sang to us. Tests are mildly easy, essays are very easy, sections arn't too fun though. But still a great class.
It's all been said. Probably most loved teacher in the anthro department. Abnormally happy and enthusiastic. Also a world expert on the material. Plays the guitar for you! The big term paper is definitely a challenge, but you'll feel like you really accomplished something in the end. And you'll learn a lot. Long live McHenry.
"I love the scientific name for Gorilla: it's just gorilla! 'Gorilla gorilla'...hm! sort of like my name." You'd be hard-pressed not to love this professor. Enthusiastic and perpetually happy with a very cute lecturing style. Definitely take one of his courses if you are at all interested in anthropology.
great prof. multiple choice tests can be tricky because he gives combinations of answers (such as "a and c") so make sure you know shared and derived traits for all species covered. lectures boring sometimes but at least he is enthusiastic. take the term paper seriously because it's worth a lot.
HE IS GREAT, THE LECTURES CAN BE BORING BUT HIS MIDTERMS COME EXACTLY (EXACTLY!!!) OFF HIS LECTURE NOTES THAT HE POSTS ONLINE. AS LONG AS YOU STUDY HIS NOTES, YOU WILL DO FINE, BUT STUDY AHEAD OF TIME SINCE THERE IS ALOT OF INFO AND TOO MUCH TO CRAM AT THE LAST MINUTE (EXPLAINS MY GRADE). HE'S GREAT TEACHER AND DOESNT GIVE YOU ANY TRICK QUESTIONS.
Midterms are straightforward and just like the practice midterms he posts online (he even repeats anywhere from 5-10 questions on a given midterm). Final was a piece of cake, just 97 MC (46 T/F and another 30 only had a possibility of two answers). Just study his notes and attend lecture and you'll do fine.
Henry McHenry is THE best professor EVER. I had an absolute blast in his class and loved learning about all the different species and primates. Its just awesome. Also, he sings a song to you with his guitar about some type of primate. It was so cool. If this man makes an album with his songs, I'd be the first one there to buy his CD.
His class is sometimes boring, but you get credit if you go to lectures. You do no need the book, his notes are online and his tests are WORD for WORD off the notes!!! Just study for tests and write a good paper and you can A the class.
awesome, everythings been said. great prof
the jolliest old man i've ever met! he seriously loves what he does and is an amazing prof. the subject is sometimes boring but he's awesome. the tests are similar to the old ones he posts, some questions are straight from them. only need the book for papers, practically everything comes from lecture and he posts slides online. he's great!
Professor mchenry was my favorite professor this quarter! His is an exciting, humorous lecturer who seems genuinely interested in the material. the exams are straight from lecture. i highly recommend this class for anyone and it satisfies 3 GE requirements. Awesome class.
Professor McHenry was good but the TA's suck. Make sure you go to class because he has pop quizzes. Once again the TA's suck so if you have any questions go to him and ask.
He's a cute old man who actually sings a song with powerpoint for you at the end of the quarter (well close to the end)... he is a good teacher but the TA's are sometimes clueless. There are 2 essays and one is a rewrite. The tests aren't too bad either, but try to stay awake, sometimes it is a boring lecture.
such a nice man. his lectures are so clear and he posts the notes online. BUT you need to read the book (it's a must for the pre-labs). Yes lectures can be extremely boring but if you manage to stay up you'll learn so much (I did) and i loved his class.
Interesting course. Posts lect notes online, there will be pop quizzes so keep up w/ the studying. my t.a was very helpful "katie f." the labs weren't as helpful but you get points for attending. the tests can be very detail specific,be sure to study ahead of time. the test will be based on lecture n labs. textbook is only needed for your essays.
Such a sweet guy! His lectures are all online, as well as a practice midterms and final which helped a lot! The final was really hard though compared to the midterms, but as long as you study his lecture notes really well you should do fine. Overall not a hard class, but got pretty boring at times.
Definitely a passionate man like everyone has said. Lectures are relatively important even though you can find lecture notes online. Go to D/Ls and hope for a good TA. Practice tests are helpful in giving you an idea of what is on the MT/Finals. Straight up memorization is the key so you gotta have a passion for Anthro. Highly recommend him for Ant
Definitely recommended! Very enthusiastic and charming. Now, the negatives: a) the pop quizzes. b) Discussions are pointless. c) TAs grade arbitrarily. D) Annoying how we're supposed to buy a $110 new-edition book WRITTEN BY A FRIEND/COLLEAGUE OF HIS - and we hardly even used it. I'm already a poor college student, so this didn't seem fair.
McHenry is adorable, enthusiastic, fun, and friendly. Advice: you don't really need the book, pop quizzes and tests are based primarily on his notes which are posted online, do the online practice midterms he takes a handful of the questions for the actual tests, show up the day after the 2nd midterm - he sings a song for you!
Awesome professor! Very enthusiastic and very clear about what he expects of you (even though it is a ton of information). I learned a lot in this class. I definitely recommend him for Anthro (probably the best professor I've had for Anthro and I'm 2 classes away from an Anthro minor).
He is an awesome professor. He speaks very clearly and slowly, which made it very easy to grasp and comprehend. His lecture notes are available online for convenience. His tests are very fair and easy. Read and understand the lecture notes and you'll ace the exams.

McHenry is the cutest old man ever! The material can be somewhat boring, but his energy and humor makes it fun to go to class! You can tell he is really passionate about his field, and it rubs off on you as a student. I learned A LOT. Seriously one of the best professors I've ever had at Davis.
A very pleasant guy with incredible interest in his topic. Going to his lectures make you a happier (but sometimes sleepier) person. His tests are pretty hard, but he curves very generously. A LOT of weight in this class lies on the paper, and therefore the class' difficulty will differ by who your TA is. Definitely take this class for fields.
Going to lecture was fun. It was like listening to a really cool grampa tell stories to his grandkids. I definitely recommend taking this class!
awesome teacher! very funny and nice
Always smiles during lecture and he would even sing you a song about human evolution. Great professor.
What could you not like about a cute, little old professor? He is very passionate and knowledgeable about what he teaches. He makes most lectures rather entertaining, and always lets you out early. I would recommend this class.
Do NOT take this class if you don't have to. It is NOT easy. It's F'in hard. I do pretty decent in most hardcore science classes, but this... this is a whole different story. If you want to learn all about order, suborder, infraorder, superfamily, family, subfamily of lemurs, monkeys, apes, etc then this may be the class for you..
Nice professor, boring lecture but still have to come for credits! Midterms are hard, only a few materials from the practice midterm, most of the questions cover so much in details that you have to remember everything. Short-answer midterms and multiple-choice final.
Great professor, loves what he does, class isn't hard as long as you can remember the material for the midterms and final. Always lets you out early and an awesome class to take.
This was my second class with McHenry. He is a wonderful lecturer and very engaging, but his tests are HORRENDOUS. The final this time around wasn't too daunting, but just because he is a nice guy DO NOT SLACK OFF IN HIS CLASS. Once you fall behind you are doomed.
McHenry really IS one of the best professors out there. I believe he's a pretty established person as well in the academic world. If you can, take him. I received a B even though I got A's on my midterms; however the final was not the easiest and neither was the grading on the three essays we had to do. I did my work though, learned a lot.
Wonderful professor! Very cute and loveable as a person. Need to attend class for the pop quizzes. Essays are hard or easy depending on your TA. class material itself not too interesting.
Professor is very nice but lectures are boring and useless. The only reason to attend is for the pop quizzes. Sections are boring but easy. There are two papers, 2 midterms, and a final. The tests were easy--memorize the answers on the practices tests. The FINAL was HARD!!!!! What's great is that the class is CURVED!!! Easy overall!
I really liked him! grades of your essays really depend on your TAs. but the class is overall not so bad. RMR to go to ur labs and do practice questions!
A sweet old man who loves primates! His material wasn't always interesting but his enthusiasm saves the lecture. The textbook wasn't necessary since his exams are lecture based. He's nice but yes his exams are pretty intense-be prepared to spend more than a couple of days to study and memorize material.
Sweetest professor. Knows his material. Very funny...sometimes he sings and reads poems for us!! =)) sweetheart
Great professor. He's a very happy and warm person.
He was the best and my fav prof at Davis. He always tries hard to remember his students and was always helpful. I loved his guitar playing at the end of the semester.
