Professor Nau is an awesome professor. He's got a lot of experience and he's a cool guy to talk with outside of class. He's in his late 50s but every girl I know says that he's hot with that Sean Connery thing going on. A great prof. all around!

Professor Nau is extremely knowledgeable. Although the class is huge, he tries to help students when they approach him. My only complaint is that he doesn't ensure conformity in grading practices among the TAs (DON'T PICK BETH, SHE WON'T GIVE A'S).

I took this class when I was a freshman, and he still talks to me whenever he sees me, he is really nice, and he knows his stuff.
Very interesting class. Nau is a bit boring and conceited but he's very good speaker. In terms of the TAs, Pick Amy!--she's nice, smart, and an easy grader. Don't pick Jonathan--he's tough
This class was horrible. . . the one thing I got from it was a new major.
This is the ideal introductory class. It will more than likely tell you whether this major is for you or not, so take it your freshman fall semester if you can. Proffesor Nau includes all the info on his slides which are a online, very useful!
He goes on silly tangents sometimes in lectures, but his experience and knowledge are incredible.
Professor Nau is an excellent professor. I think a lot of first-years are scared by his gruff demeanor and experience, but he is actually extraordinarily approachable. I also worked for him for three years and I could not have had a better mentor
Great class. Nau is wacko but he's a good professor. If you are reading this and are currently registered to take the class and have joe or "Mr.Clark" as your TA, run, don't walk to your computer to change your discussion. He is like a drill s
He is really confined by the size of the class. The lectures can be interesting, they can be boring, but it is always a pleasure to listen. Lara Panis is a horrible TA but a cool person. It is a fantastic introduction.
Nau really knows his stuff and is a good "celebrity prof" with his history. Joe Clark is an excellent and extremely intelligent TA who, to be honest, taught much more than Nau himself did.
Nau is a very intelligent, experienced professor that really know what he's talking about. Tends to ramble once in awhile.
The class is easy but dont get behind in the readings because it will hurt you later on. Pete Sickel is an awesome TA. Not only is he intelligent, but he makes class interesting too.
He only teaches because no one else will pay to listen to his ramblings. Plus he gets royalities from forcing his students to buy his insipid books.
This man teaches the ideal introductory course to International Affairs. If you like this, you will love the program. If you are bored by this class, you should really look for a new major. Nau is AMAZING! So experienced and incredibly knowledgable.
he knows his stuff and is an intersting guy but the lectures from his power point presentations are dull. Lara Panis was my TA and was AWESOME- she if very flexible, corrects rough drafts, and isn't on a power trip like so many TAs
Nau is a great guy. Since lecture are from power point, they can be dry. However, this is a man who really is passionate about what he is teaching and it shows.
Sometimes he gets a little boring, however, I enjoyed the classes, so it wasn't such a big deal to sit through a boring lecture. My TA was really friendly. Word of advice: Don't skip lecture... it kills your grade with attendance.
Nau is awesome. He may get boring in class at times, but go spend one hour with him in his office. He knows everything. Very passionate teacher. Pete Sickle was my TA - and he was great. His discussion sections were much more interesting than the class.
I dont care what anyone else said. The lectures were a bit dry but Prof.Nau is about the cutest man ever! Almost no one paid close attention in class. Make sure you get a good TA. The TAs determine your grade 100% & a lot of them are on major power trips.

although i found the class structure to be lacking, i enjoyed the perspectives and examples that nau offers in class. he is also very helpful and intelligent. DO NOT be afraid to ask him for help, esp when your TA is horrible. overall a decent prof.
Wonderful class, but I will warn you -- it is what you make of it, and your grade will reflect it. No matter what anyone says, get Clark as a TA. His eagerness to educate makes the experience all the more valuable. Go to Nau's office hours, too!
The class was pretty hard... a lot of reading and needs a lot of time. Attendance is MANDATORY in both lectures and discussions. The lecture is taught off of slides that are available on blackboard. Nau is boring most of the time, but knows his stuff.
Class is boring but the powerpoints are very succint, and if you read at least 1/2 the material and do the vocab you will get an easy A. TA's determine a large part of your grade so be careful.
I'm actually suprised about how many positive reviews there are. I really wasn't a fan of him at all. I found the class and books boring and if you have any knowledge of international affairs at all, it's a huge drag and he's completely biased.
Well, the one positive thing I can say about this class is that it gave me an opportunity to do EVERY crossword puzzle in the New York Times and Washington Post all semester. If you know anything about anything, you'll be bored.
Lectures don't offer much and are on Blackboard anyways. Midterm and Final were not that bad. The TA I had was not a fair grader, was on a major power trip, and was incredibly pompous. I worked hard and did not get the grade I worked for. But you have to take his class for Elliott, so too bad.
Class was pretty straight forward. Attendence was mandatory, and there is a lot of work involved. Not difficult, but time-consuming. I had Pete Sickle as my TA and he was awesome.
Freshmen beware... it's your first taste of the utter neglect you will face from most GW professors, who spend all of their time bragging about their own research projects and careers, and no time invested in you. Bring an interesting book with you to class.
It doesn't really matter what Nau is like, it matters what your TA is like. You should probably go to lectures if only to reinforce the lecture notes that you can already type out. Just do the work and STUDY the notes and you'll be fine. Of course, I had a really nice TA.
Most boring experience of my life. I would bring magazines to class before I withdrew and changed my major. My friends would have coloring books and homework from other classes. Nau has a speech impediment and stutters so much; it's funny at first then it's irritating. I made a comment one day, and he yelled at me, but I was too busy ignoring him!
Very very boring. Lectures are pointless except as a study hall. The only good point about Prof Nau, is, as he announced one day "I haven't devoured any students yet!"
The most boring class ever! Nau can't even make coherant sentences; he stammers and stutters constantly. His lectures are just a reading of his slides which are on blackboard. His manuscript is a piece of**** and also blatant plagerism of the real textbook you read.
If they didn't take attendance, I wouldn't even bother showing up to class. SO BORING. Even the outside reading is dull. Pick up a newspaper, you'll learn more. But pay attention to your TA because they are the ones you will leanr the most from.
I wish I hadn't taken this class, but its mandatory, so all incoming I'ntl Affairs majors are screwed. Treat it like a hazing process, they try to scare you out of the program. Nau is boring, incoherent, confusing (even to himself), and doesn't really care much about his class. Your TA is your only guidance, so try to find a good one.
I spent the majority of time in this class doing both the Sudoku and Crossword puzzles from the Post. I was very interested in Int'l Affairs before this class but this class makes me want to run away screaming from it. The tests are a bit demanding (not impossible) and if you have a good TA you will most likely do alright.
ok, if ur TA doesnt take attendance, u dont need to show up bc everyting that nau talks about in class is on blackboard - i didnt come at class at the end bc i realized there there was not point. go to discussions. the TAs were cool. not many papers at all!! i hardly wrote anything for the class. just read 1 in a hwile and ull be ok.
This class was required and thats probably because no one would sign up for it if it was optional. Nau talks about irrelevant material and puts notes up on blackboard. You don't need to pay attention in lecture and your TA gives you your grade. What a waste of $4,000!
Very good professor. He's much better at the economics part of the course than the politics. If you do the readings and attend class you should be fine. Get Becker as a TA.
Seriously, this guy is a joke. His manuscript is a piece of****, read the Nye book and you'll be fine. I figured out half way through the lectures that I didn't have to listen to him (and certainly didn't want to). Good luck for all you suckers in the Elliot school who have him, bring a magazine and your Ipod, you will get bored.
Going to lecture is a complete waste of time because all Nau does is read from the slides(that are on Blackboard anyway). He doesn't invest any real time in his students, but wrote a manuscript for the course that is simply awful. Your TA will do everything from grading to teaching and you'll learn from them if you have a good one. I recommend JJ.
Despite what others have said Dr. Nau is very intelligent (hes a former member of the National Security Council) and does care about students (i once talked to him for over an hour after class) Those saying this class is useless either know nothing about IA or they just dont care. If you dont like the subject matter, cange your major now.
so the lecture class sucks and is really not necessary because he reads his powerpoints that are later posted, but there is attendance taken by most ta's so go to lecture. Your ta is one of the most important things in this class, i suggest kristen she was awesome and even organized review sessions and made us cookies!
Great professor. He managed to make the intro class interesting and simplified the economics part of it. TAs are all that matter- they grade everything. Plus, you get to learn all about his family, who are from Bavaria, and his many journeys to the Orient with members of the US Congress. All in all, I really enjoyed the class, I recommend him.
Save yourself the time-skip class and download the lecture slides later.
This professor is nothing short of amazing. As the saying goes, "Nau-iness is next to godliness!" Just hearing him say "Realist" or "Squeal" is worth attending lecture. And let me tell you, there is no greater expert on the Prisoner's Dilemma on this earth. Prof. Nau is the master of video lectures, so you NEVER have to miss his soothing voice!
A list of Do's and Don'ts: DO go to class once in a while - maybe he'll have a freakout session. DON'T read his manuscript. Ever. Stick to Nye. DO download the lectures. Helpful! DON'T go to the lecture if your TA doesn't take attendance. DO sit in the back if you can - naptime is a plus. DO go to class when it's a taped lecture - even Jeff l
TAKE ONLY IF YOU MUST. I absolutely hated this class. Nau might know a great deal about international affairs, but if you fail to agree with him on exams, you will not do well. Expectations are never clear and your grade really depends on the TA you get. No need to go to class either. I love international affairs, and Nau made me rethink my career!
Worst class ever taken!! TAs do everything, while Nau just shows up to lectures, and talks about nothing. I love international affairs and this class made me rethink my major. But, you probably have to take this class so it doesn't really matter.
Easy, fairly boring class. Tests are really easy since you basically only need to understand one general concept, but be sure to take some time on the papers. You should go to most of the lectures but notes are not necessary. hes a smart guy but he doesn't really understand college kids. he sometimes tries to make bad jokes
Professor Nau is extremely boring, but amusing since he occasionaly speaks in weird manners. He tries to connect to the students but it doesn't work very well. Your TA really makes or breaks the class. They do all the grading so difficulty depends on them. The course gets repetitive though, it only revolves around a couple ideas.
Somewhat tough class. Make sure you get a good TA (your grade will depend on it). Instructor is clear, and lectures are interesting.
First half on the class is alright, but it started to breakdown after the mid-term. The lectures are right out of his book (which is an OK text). There's not too much reading and the two papers are under five pages. Besure to get a good TA because they grade EVERYTHING! If your in the elliott school you have to take the class so buck up...
lectures are so boring!!! if you read the textbook nau wrote, nau basically lectures about what he wrote in it. so it is extremely boring to read and listen to the same lines. however, he does try to make the class more amusing at times by making strange sounds for example. discussions mean everything for this class. TA's teach and grade everything
Nau's class is the Elliott School's funny idea of a hazing process. It hurt. A lot. Especially the book (I had to read the manuscript - can't believe it got published). All I learned were the 3 perspectives and that the Cold War was important. So really, nothing important. Elliott school frosh: I am so sorry, it happens to us all, just suck it up.
Prof. Nau is the greatest professor. His book is a great introduction to international affairs and his lectures are very clear. The simulation exercise is amazing. As long as you do the reading you will do well.
Lectures are supposed to be checked for attendence by the TAx but aren't. Just learn the three perspectives and the glossary and you'll be fine. The midterm and final are pretty much the same format and all you have to know are the bolded terms. Get an easy TA because some make you answer questions or write essays while others don't care.
Memorize the terms at the back of the chapter and you will get an A. As far as lectures, this is probably the most boring and useless class you will ever take. On the up side, think of it as a 50 minute nap in the middle of the day. Show up in case of quizes, then leave or do other homework. Tip: bring crosswords or sudoku's
This is pretty much a ridiculous waste of time, all you need to do is memorize the entire textbook, and you'll do great on the exams. Think you like international affairs, think again. Get a good TA, and beg for mercy, because you are going to need it.
Lecture is straight from the book, slides are straight from the book, terms are straight from the book. Honestly, just read the book and focus on the terms. His lectures are dry and boring, peppered with bad jokes and poor interactivity. A good TA is a plus. Some have you do loads of work on the side, while others just talk about the days material.
You have to take this class-tough it out. Read the book for the key ideas. Essays are interesting so put effort into those. There are pop quizzes in class so use your judgment when deciding if you want to show up to class or not. Otherwise, class is a waste of time. He has to realize that you can't turn a 200 person lecture into a discussion class.
Such a bad professor. You have to take it though. Just pretend to be madly in love/obsessed with the glossary in Nau's textbook and you'll do fine. I had an amazing TA. This class was definitely made to weed out all of the IA kids who don't completely want to be there. Don't quit...that's what they want you to do!!!
Easily the worst class I've ever taken. Lectures are mind numbingly boring, but you still have to go for the pop quizzes. Grade depends entirely on TA, and as such I'd avoid Chris Mitchell or John Tai as much as possible. Gives a bad name to the IAFF major, but all the other class I've taken have been 100 times better.
He is a good professor with good intentions. Some people really do not like he's style, to me it was not that bad. He teaches from his textbook verbatim but go to lectures nevertheless because he gives 5-8 pop quizzes a semester. Do not miss those. Always do the reading. Your TA will make or break you. I reccomend Wilcox. Study + read = "A".
Ohhh Henry Nau...Yeah, his lectures are pretty boring, but he can be funny on occasion. Your TA entirely determines your grade. JJ is mine and the chief TA. He is a tough grader, but absolutely brilliant and a cool guy to get to know. Read the book and go to class and you will get a good grade. (For JJ that's an A or B)
Overfocused on his own manuscript; Did not address the course description; I liked him at first, but then I found him vain; you'll do well if you repeat his views back to him. He doesn't take the time to teach research skills, make you re-do papers, etc.
Henry Nau is quite possibly one of the most self-serving professors I have ever had. His textbook is inadequate- filled with typos and slanted opinions-and he lectures verbatim from the book. Its a shame this is a required course, its horrible. Your TA will make or break the class, I suggest Mema; if you care about IA, he will take you a long way.
Don't bother going to lecture unless your TA takes attendance - Nau rarely (if ever) says anything of importance or usefulness. Read the textbook instead, it's surprisingly really interesting and useful. You can't avoid it cause it's required so you might as well suck it up and deal with it.
since this is a required class he is your only option... lectures can be on the boring side but he tries to make it interesting. Your TAs make or break your grade. If you work hard and study you can get a good grade. There are pop quizzes so go to class!
As far as a lecturer, not bad if you're really into international affairs. However, his lectures are mostly exploring the reading assigned from the textbook (which he wrote btw). You wouldn't have to show up for class except for the pop quizzes he gives now and then. If you know the textbook well, you will do well on the exams.
Prof. Nau is a great professor. He is extremely knowledgable in this field, and he lectures everything on the top of his head. He has the willingneess to help the students and assist them in learning the topics. Although it's uneasy to get to know him in a personal level (due to the class size), he is definitely one of the qualified professors.
He doesn't really teach very well in a large lecture class. He is very knowledgeable, but his lectures are essentially regurgitation of the book(which he wrote). TA's can be very helpful. If you get Chris Mitchell you will learn alot and have a good time, but be prepared to work for your grade.
Terrible professor, boring class, but you have to take it so focus on getting a good TA like Jason. Lecture is long and tedious and there's no reason to take notes because it's directly from the book (which Nau wrote, coincidentally).
Honestly, I hated Nau at first as a lecturer however he is absolutely brilliant and his book is super straightforward and a must read to do well. Lectures were often pointless but quizzes were done in the beggining to make sure kids go. I learned a lot from Henry, and you gotta take him if you are an IAFF major - dont fear this class - hes funny!
This class was useless- the general concepts are important, but a lot of the class is spent drumming useless information into you, but then again it is an intro class. Grading depends almost entirely on your TA. Work isn't too hard, you'll do fine if you keep up with the reading, as painful as that might be. Few like the course, but it is doable.
The class taught me nothing about international affairs. Nearly everyone in my discussion group got a C+ or a B- in the class. The tests cover meaningless concepts, so one cannot study for them no matter how hard he or she may try. If you can take PSC 003 instead, do it.
Great Professor. Great Class Origins of Major War. Highly recommended if you are looking to learn and dont mind a lot of work.
yes, he knows IAFF VERYY well. Unfortunately, you will want to die during lecture. He talks for 50 minutes about things in his book, then you go home and read his book, and then you learn it..no..MEMORIZE it and maaaybe you get a decent grade. Most of the test questions have VERY debatable answers too..so the tests are a bit unfair in my opinion.
He is very boring. He says the exact same things in lecture that are in the book and since he wrote the book you get bored very very easily. Pop quizzes are not that hard if you actually do the reading but the reading can be boring and even worse when re reguritates the information to you the next day.
It's an intro class, so not the most exciting class you'll take at GW, but he does teach key concepts that you need to know to study International Affairs. Your grade really depends on your TA so beware! He gives a lot of pop quizzes, making attendance essentially mandatory, which is annoying because he only repeats what's in his book.
Massive amounts of reading from the textbook he wrote. The information is repeated in class, minus the key parts that are on his pop quizzes that make both reading and attendence a must. He's a nice guy, but the class is boring, I'm seriously considering changing majors.
Prof. Nau's lectures may be somewhat boring and are straight from his textbook, but if you go to class and listen you should be fine. Having a good TA is essential, they do all of the grading, and most of the teaching. Chris Mitchel is a good TA, a great guy, and really knows his stuff. Participate and you will learn a lot and have a good time.
Keep in mind that is an intro class. Nau loves hearing himself talk so the lectures are very boring and straight from his book. Unfortunately, many of the questions on the tests are very debatable and your grade depends greatly on your TA.
He can be kind of boring, but like other people have said, it's an intro class. He expects students to accept his views of things, which is rather annoying. But if you just do the reading and show up to class/discussion, you'll be fine.
Smart person, bad teacher. Lectures are worthless if you read the book, but he assigns pop quizes to force you to listen to him. Assignments are vague and very objective - class should be called "Nau's Perspectives on International Relations". Get a good TA, because they grade.
He is horrible but you have to take him. Good luck. you do not have to pay any attention to him at all, just read the textbook. Also just pay attention to the definitions.
I assume he knows a lot about the subject, as he worked in government, but he tries to cover so much that you honestly don't take much away. However, it doesn't really matter, you have to take Henry. Do the reading, don't listen to lectures, go to class (pop quizzes), and suck up to the TA.
Well it's not the worst class at GW but it's not exactly great either. Nau lectures verbatim from the textbook but unfortunately attendance is mandatory (lots of pop quizzes!) TAs are usually pretty good- I quite liked Mitchell. For the exam, memorize the terms word for word and you should be fine.
About as close as the Elliot School gets to hazing.
His lectures can be boring, but this is not a hard class. He does a good job introducing IAFF. You can either listen to his lectures or read the book its the same thing. TAs are helpful. Midterm/essays were not hard.
This class was a waste of time, credits, and money. I won't name names, but another professor at GW who teaches a similar subject told his class that Nau's IAFF is a waste of time, and the terms he uses are no longer relevant to modern International Affairs.
I don't like his book. It is very wordy and this could be taught in a less horrible way.
It is a joke that this class is mandatory for IAFF students. He only uses the book that he wrote himself, and talks about the history of his family for the entire class. Lots of pop quizzes, which sucks. Also midterm and final. I had Jason as a TA, who was definitely fair. Try and get a TA otherwise this class will be unbearable.
Nau's class is really not that hard if you do work, but he makes it difficult to want to do anything in this class. His lectures are dry and straight from the textbook, so you can skip class - except there are pop quizzes that he randomly throws out, so be careful. Honestly, your TA makes or breaks your grade, so pray you have a good one
The TA is what really matters in this class. If I didn't have Mark as mine, I probably wouldn't have enjoyed it. Nau tends to weave in and out of the slides, personal stories/feelings, and stretches to make all of the material "fit" each of the IA theory "perspectives". You will work for your grade no matter what, and your TA will make or break it.
The only one worse than Nau is Brett, make sure to avoid him as a TA since he is very condescending, yet at the same time doesnt know much about the material.
One of the worst professors I've had. He lectures straight from the book, which he wrote himself, and it isn't even that good. He'll try to turn your answer around to make it his own, just so he can keep his own false superiority in that class.
Tries really hard to make the class interesting and attempts a few jokes every now and then, but overall it's a dread and your grade depends on your TA. The class focuses more on "the perspectives" opposed to the actual study of International Affairs. It's a requirement so just hold your breath and hope that you get a TA who will let you breathe.
Professor Nau tries really hard, but the class just isn't that great. Everything is based on the book, so make sure you do the readings. Unfortunately, grades depend on your TA, and some TAs are much harder than other.
This was the worst class that I have ever taken. Manages to avoid any relation to reality in the foetid morass that is his textbook. Pray that you will never be forced to understand the irony of the previous sentence.
Fail. He is a competent professor but just not well suited to be teaching an introductory course of this nature. He monologues about anything and everything, the end result being you learn next to nothing. Unfortunately this class is unavoidable as it's required for all Elliott students.
The class is really boring. Lecture attendance is mandatory because of pop quizzes; vocabulary from the book margins and lectures slides are best study materials. Also depends on your TA because the TAs grade everything. Unfortunately, all Elliott students must take it so there is no way to get out of it.
Lectures are meaningless. He repeats what was in the book, and he doesn't add anything. Your grade and interest in this class is dependent solely on your TA. I had an awesome TA who was a fair grader and helped us understand the course. Other TAs though seemed to hate being there and were unfair graders.
he's really unclear, goes on power trips and brags about his career and experience. he'll put you to sleep but show up to class for the pop quizzes. don't rely on him to learn anything just do the readings, oh and he also wrote the book for the class so he always references himself. it's annoying and it's basically up to what TA you get cause they can really make or break you.
The fact this class is our introduction to IA seems like a cruel joke. Nau's smart, but incapable of objectivity. The textbook should be retitled, "A Neoconservative View of the World, and Why Ronald Reagan is and Always Will Be, the Love of My Life." Mark is a chill TA, but this class is a huge waste of time/effort. Try to take PSC 3 instead.
Be prepared for a waste of your time. Go to class for no other reason then pass the pop quizzes. Your grade will be entirely based around the TA you have, always check to see who's the TA for your discussion and ask around for reputation.
Nau knows a lot about the topic but he often rambles in lecture and his textbook is relatively disorganized. Make sure you get a good TA like Shannon or Mark if you want to do well in this class and be prepared for a lot of busy work. If you can, try to take PSC 3 instead.
Nau is to academia what his hero Regan was to politics.Enough Said.
I still do not understand that Elliott School lists the class as a mandatory introductory course. Though definitely not for me to judge, the stuff Nau talks about is, if I may use the word, "unscientific," as we used deductive reasoning throughout the course (perspectives, LoA, etc.) but seldom inductive. Not at all intellectually challenging.
Nau is really good at making easy material difficult to understand for students. Terrible lecturer-he's all over the place. I recommend Mark or Shannon for TAs.
READ the textbook, come to every other lecture atleast (5 pop quizes), and you will do well. Come with a positive attitude and you will not waste your time.
Literally the greatest man on earth!!!!! Interesting, provocative, and parallels Einstein with his theories. Go to every class, sit in the front row, record his lectures to show your kids later. And take as much time as you can to get to know him. A true american hero!!!
Read the book. Prepare to be bored. Varun is the best TA by far. Taking his section will make you one of the most knowledgable students in the class. And he is hot.
You will honestly be asking yourself ," why am i here right Nau?" This is by far the most boring class, with a boring, unfocused teacher and TAs who really dont put in a lot of effort. prepare to do a TON of reading and take HARD test
This class is quite the weeder course. Readings I found to be semi-biased and the lectures are an exact summary of the assigned readings. Basically you learn chapter 1 and 2 and the rest is history you should already know. Don't get Brett as your TA and you won't be subjected to too much suffering.
Nau sucks, enough said. He sucks and lecturing and honestly just makes things more difficult than they actually are. Don't get Brett as a TA, he is almost just as bad. Go for Mark or Varun. If you can take PSC 3. This is a waste of time and money.
Just read the textbook. Classes are absolutely pointless yet required for a few pop quizzes. Painful to get through, especially with either an 8:00 or 9:35 in the morning yet you WILL be happy when you are done.
Pros: Nau is well connected in the DC political community and a great teacher if you get him to notice to you. Cons: He rambles about his book, has lectures out of his book, doesn't post powerpoints online quickly and the TAs do most of the grading or work. The TAs make or break whether you do well in the class. But overall the work is not hard.
Terrible class...hard projects, boring professor, etc. Do the readings for the discussion and you'll be fine. The highlight of this class was the discussion, Varun is awesome. Nau can be entertaining but I didn't really like the fact that the lectures were basically the same as the book and therefore didn't pay much attention.
The WORST class you will ever take. Nau's lectures are awfully boring. He wrote the books yet doesn't know what is in them. Most discussions for this class are at 8am or 9.35 on Friday, which is absolutely awful. The TAs and Nau have all designed the class to make you fail and they don't try to help at all. This class makes you question you major.
I look at this course like a induction ceremony for all ESIA-ers. Sure, at times Nau's lectures are filled with tangents and irrelevant information to the course or discourse, or it even becomes banal. But, this class will give you a holistic understanding of IAFF. And ESIA-ers always commiserate together. In a sadistic way, it's fun.
Professor Nau is a very smart individual when it comes to International Affairs, but that does not mean this class is good. The material will be repeated threefold: the textbook (which he wrote, and will make sure you remember), in lecture when he's not flipping out, and in discussion. Pay attention to one of the three and you will do fine.
Professor Nau is a very interesting professor, but he's sadly not the greatest professor. The reader is useless, but the textbook is generally useful. I suggest trying to get Varun as your TA, since he'll make the class interesting. His lectures are a retelling of the book and are sadly boring, except when he flips out on disrespectful students.
Henry Nau could be a legendary professor in the Elliott School and for all ESIA students. IA5 is basically an one semester preparatory class for ESIA. It intends to teach you the methods to analyse based on Nau's book. Unfortunately, he wasn't an interesting professor in terms of teaching. But the terms are very useful for further study and reading
Pretty good class in all. Although the lectures are pretty boring, Henry Nau never ceases to entertain people with his mindless rants about random things during classes (which take up the majority of the lectures).
Professor Nau should be a good scholar because of his credentials. However, he is a terrible professor. He rambles on random topics (like his book that he is reading), and is not a good speaker. He puts his first page of his powerpoint up, but then doesn't go through it at all. In all, it is a waste to attend class.
Read the textbook. Final is cumulative. Very boring class... One midterm, one final, a long research project (paper), oral presentation in discussion. Reader was useless
Poor professor with poor teaching skills, most of his lectures were rants about his personal interests. Discussion section will be the only thing that saves you. Not even worth going to class, just read the textbook.
Nau is very passionate about the subject, but he just spends all his lectures ranting about whatever he wants. Most of the time he will prepare a slideshow and not move off the title page.
Henry's a nice guy and obviously knows what he's talking about. His lectures are somewhat useless, so just read the textbook and go to discussion and you'll be fine
You'll realize that Nau is an extremely knowledgeable professor, but you'll wonder how on earth he was relegated to teach a freshman intro course. He rambles in lecture when he needs to be specific, somehow kills all interesting aspects of the topics, and never posts his powerpoints on BlackBoard (though he doesn't use in class, anyways).
Nau is a smart guy with a vast knowledge of history...but he has poor teaching skills. When I say poor I mean non-existent. I don't think the poor class was entirely his fault though...GW needs to seriously reconstruct the IAFF-1005 course so at least some topics can be covered in a meaningful way. You should get an A in this class.
One of the worst professor's I had freshman year. His lectures were not engaging and my TA pretty much taught me everything I learned. This class was easy though, just because the grading system is pretty lax. I didn't pick up the book and didn't study for the final. I got a B+. I would not recommend taking this class... at all!
Nau is definitely not the best lecturer, but he really knows what he is talking about. Go to his office hours. Not only can he help clarify any questions you have, but you'll learn even more. He is very interested in his students (he helped me make connections in the State Department!). The class is boring, but everyone takes it.
Professor Nau is a very well educated academic with a vast amount of knowledge. If I would suggest something to him I would suggest trying to stay on topic more and have more in-depth analysis of international relations theory and the applications of them. Overall, it wasn't that bad of a class and I think it could get better with a few changes.
This guy is very boring and I felt like he went on long rants, talked about stories, never stayed on subject. Uses a powerpoint that he puts online. TA leads the discussions, which aren't easy and you will need to talk. Also, book is rather dry but his basic concepts will be useful in your future classes.
Nau is an incredibly brilliant & passionate scholar in the fields of international relations & American politics. Lectures were extremely long & tended to end up with him rambling for 2 hours, but he has moments of great insight. Papers were challenging due to their brevity, considering what content he wanted covered. Must comprehend reading.
Look, he's not a good professor - half the time, you'll have no idea what he's talking about - but the class is incredibly easy and you can just sit there on your laptop while he rambles on at the front of the room.
A professor with a massive amount of knowledge of international affairs, he is a conservative who's viewpoints on the world are a fresh breath from the liberal leanings of GW. His homework is straightforward, do the assignments and you'll be fine. I'd also recommend speaking with him in office hours for great insight on the world.
Took PAW with Nau and somehow got an A after a semester of his right leaning rants, multiple choice tests that go up to J, and a lot of repetitive reading. If you can stomach that and really enjoy international schools of thought and conflict, take the class. If not, look to fulfill this requirement elsewhere. Silver lining: does have nice stories.
Seemingly easy class and the concepts are taught at a pre-school level. That said, he is an incredibly unfair grader and completely screwed my final grade over. Avoid as an elective or in general at all costs especially if you have more important classes to deal with.
Lectures were boring, but you could definitely tell Professor Nau is extremely knowledgeable and passionate about the topic. I did enjoy this course as I feel like I learned a lot. Material was very light with 3 multiple choice quizzes in class and one 1-3 page paper. If you are trying to fill out a requirement for Elliot I would 100% recommend him
Nau is very knowledgeable, having worked as an academic for a long time and having served in the Reagan Administration. If you have a question, he will have an answer, but it may be a little off-base and it may (will) be rambling.
Prof. Nau is an interesting guy who has had a very amazing political career, especially having worked in Reagan's Administration. His class is graded on three MC exams and one small paper. The MC exams are 20 questions with A B C D E F G H I J answers so even if you do the readings, you can easily be screwed. He roasted students if they deserved it
Is extremely passionate about presidential history. Wants to see initiative. One of the few conservative profs at GWU, offers a fresh perspective and is incredibly smart. Can come across as a bit rambly. Only graded on 3 quizzes (30% each) and 1 short paper. Quizzes are all MC, 20-25 questions with difficult questions. Factors in effort.
Professor Nau is one of the most passionate professors I know. Solid Reagan conservative. The class is really lecture heavy, with three cumulative quizzes (20 questions each) that are really difficult and one short paper. Looks for effort and will give you good amount to read and reread. If you're looking for a real challenge, take his class!
Nau is really passionate about USFP & presidential history. Incredibly smart & one of the few conservative professors here. 3 MC cumulative quizzes (75%), 1 short paper (10%), & participation (15%). Gives EC for going to certain seminars. Do the readings! If you understand the readings & the concepts you're set. I really enjoyed this class.
Nau is a brilliant man, with a great perspective on US history. However, his class is made up of 3 exams worth 90% of your grade and one paper worth 10%. Exams are VERY hard, even if you come to class and do all the readings. I don't recommend taking this class unless you ABSOLUTELY HAVE to. Too tedious and a real GPA sinker.
He is very abrasive and extremely arrogant even more so than your typical professor his age. Dont care about his politics and I actually lean conservative so this isnt because hes a far right winger - he truly is just an abrasive, rude guy who doesnt care much about his students. The class itself is easy enough and not difficult.
Nah might be the coolest prof at GW. Class is easy if you know any basic foreign policy theory and history. there are three quizzes and a paper and a participation grade (which will ABSOLUTELY get you in his good graces). You literally do not need to listen to his lectures, just absorb every word of the readings and you'll get an A.
