He keeps talkin and talkin, never stops,about nothing...seems flamboyent if you know what i mean. Tests are too subjective. His attitude is biased towards whatever he believes
he babbles on incoherently all class long about how terrible the american way of life is and how this country has no values. If you speak out against his views, he'll give you bad grades. A terrible human being let alone professor.
He's a horrible professor. Really ****. Babbles on and on about nothing. Tests are ridiculous and he barely curves.
Lots of reading but unnecessary if you just copy notes and ask questions from his handouts. Alot of lecturing. Not 2 bad.

Dr. Piper is a good professor considering the difficulty of the subject matter, but he is abit verbose.
This man is crazy, boring,and possibly ****. His tests have four questions that come from many chapters of reading that he assigns religiously. I would recommend him only as a last resort.

Not an easy guy, but he's quite fair. Gives quiz once a week, on assigned reading, give mid-term and finals. No homework Talks a lot, takes the whole class to explain one question. But, he does get you to think. Some of his topics r rather interesting.

This guy is crazy. He talks about one thing the entire class. And that usually is that 40% of Americans dont have medicare. He gives a quiz every week which is hard and he grades hard however there is a huge curve because of his hard grading. I hate him

Strange man. Very set in his beliefs he will agrue with the class about his beliefs. Will blabs on and on about medicare or whatever. Tests are wierd. Just write down everything you know about the subject. Overall its an okay class.

Everything they say is true. He's harder then u could possibly imagine and does not help or answer ur questions. It is possible to get a decent grade if u study for six hours at least. he doesnt help u or answer questions. two midterms and a final so if u dont do good on one ur screwed. its hard.
Hated this class with a passion. He is VERY hard! He doesnt teach the material that well, and he gives you sooooo much reading at one time its overwhelming. He takes attendance, and you should be there everyday if you want to even attempt passing! a B is almost impossible! DONT TAKE HIM
omg, do not take this class. You have to work very hard in this class. He is unclear and, he takes a year to answer one question. And you're still confused, eventhough he tried to explain for an hour. Don't take piper's class. He is the worst professor ever.
He doesnt stop rambling. He goes so off topic that its ridiculous. Avoid taking his classes. You can read and study, and then think u did good on the test, but since he grades like a jerk YOU WILL FAIL!! or atleast come close, avoid him and his classes.
Very boring class. He doesn't allow laptop's in the classroom. Goes off topic and doesn't cover what you really need to know. Gives a course outline that gives summaries of the readings. USE IT, Its his thoughts and a great way to get a better test grade. Avoid him though, search elsewhere.

Yes this guy is really really difficult. He challenges you a lot and doesn't explain everything. You have to figure out a lot for yourself. Make sure you read the commentary that he gives. His viewpoint is all he cares about. No idea how he grades but i got an A even though i had B- in midterm
Do not take this class if it is avoidable!!! Listen to the others it is very hard and you will not understand nothing he is saying. In this class you will have to learn on ur own. Never answer questions and always off topic

He grades really hard, but he "curves" his tests. If you don't understand a lesson, he just runs you around in circles and you end up being more confused at the end of him talking to you.
this class is difficult involves a lot of reading but if you read, come to class and write down everything he says you will be ok must participate just make a comment once every class and your good although there is a lot of reading once you do the assignments you can get an A not easy but possible
Horrible teacher, can't explain the simplest of concepts. If you don't understand something he will repeat himself over and over until class ends. I had to independently study to learn the material and ended up easily getting an A, but without that extra effort it would be impossible

Hard class. Don't bother 2 think 4 urself, it won't work, :-(. Won't get a good grade if u don't go 2 class, and don't sleep. lot of readings, but he gives "summaries". on exams, tell him what he told u, and u'll be fine. doesn't make sense, but that's what I did and I got an A easy.

Forget about, hes never gonna answer it. Want to express your opinion? Forget it, you dont have one. He may look harmless in his little cowboy boots and tight jeans, but BEWARE!
this class is really tough. don't take it unless you have time to figure out the material on your own. the professor moves too fast to understand everything and the midterm and final are all essay
not only is the material pretty difficult, but he makes the midterm and final pretty damn hard as well.. u have to write in these tiny a@# lines. avoid him if u can, but if u can't, be prepared/ready/in the process of preparing!
Piper isnt that bad of a professor. He is very smart but the class is quite challenging. You should take very good notes and try to come to class. Journals are quite annoying bc you have to hand in a journal entry based on the reading every class. The good thing is you could use ur journals for the exams. You also have to bring ur book to class
No matter how much you think you're right you're not. Do your daily journals and copy every single word he says in class on them cause' he gives you your journals back for the midterm and final. So all you have to do is copy every single word he says in your essay. Don't you dare write what you you came up with because you're probably wrong.
Taking his class is literally college career suicide. his class is almost impossible to pass. do yourself and your GPA a favor and don't take his class.

The course is challenging but he does a good job of explaining the material. The group discussions help you make friends which is good for studying. He gives daily journals but they help you grasp the material better.

ay0 prof. piper is 1 of a kind. hes mad smart and loves to ramble on and on about the topic. the journal u do daily is BS, u can write ur english hw on it he wont notice. my advice, take down important things he say on the paper so u can use it on his midterm/final. if u d1ckride everythin he say u will get higher grade+DONT ARGUE WITH HIS VIEW!!!
Do the journals and write down any and everything he says. Yout are going to need it. He isn't that bad but he can get boring. Your grade depends on what you write on the journals, the midterm and the final (paper included). Another thing, don't argue with his view.

Piper is not that bad. He's very intelligent BUT his class isn't easy. You have to do a one page paper/journal for every class but the journals can be used for your advantage because he gives them back so you can use during the midterm and final. He gives 1 midterm, 1 final both essay format and 1 three pg paper. Overall Piper is decent.
A lot of people hate him, but Piper made me understand philosophy. He rambles a lot & tells stories that have no meaning, but that makes it a lot easier to write down notes that you will NEED for the tests. Write what he says. & write down important notes on the journals & in ur notes. believe me it helps since he gives them back during tests.
honestly this guy might be the worse teacher i ever had..he missed 6 classes in a row and never told us that he wanst goin to be there or send en email or something so i came all the way deep in long island for him not to be there twice..and the journals are so stupid..he cant teach and doesent make sense and doesent shut up..

Yes he's very tough, and yes he's kind of boring, but he knows what he's talking about and if you put effort into the class, you'll get a lot out of it. A little sarcastic, but kind of funny sometimes. Oh, and never let him see your cell phone (or any electronic device) in class.

Okay so you he isn't the easiest teacher in the world BUT he definately has a passion for what he teaches and this is one of the very few classes I actuaaly learned something in. I can actually talk abt the philosophers i learned about and I think that should count for something.I got a B+ in the class without having to do too much work.Take notes!

tough class, but not that hard. professor knows his subject but tends to ramble. weekly homeworks but you can use them on the midterm/final. basically all you gotta do is write down what he says when he goes over the homework cuz thats whats on the final. its not that bad of class, just dont take the once a week for 3 hours like i did. bad idea.
This teacher grades hard as hell class can be intresting but he never gives the answers you must read all the text and even that sometimes will not be enough. He expects you to fully grasp every concept in an introduction class. I would avoide taking him. If you can avoide it be sure to stay on top of everything and hopefully you can pull out a C/B
Will drive u crazy - loads of reading,journal due each class, material not easy to understand. If u want a good grade, WRITE EVERYTHING he says in ur test (don't add ur own views-u will fail), do the journal well b/c u get to use them in exams...if u can avoid him, but if u are stuck then do the above & pray for the best - NO ELEC. Syllubus has all the reading/hw assignment. He is precise on what he wants on the midterms and finals. Basically can use the hw(journals) on the midterms&finals. Listen to what he has to say, and keep up with the reading. Use exact terms and phrases.
He is boring and angry about modern technology. Pay attention to what he says and take notes. I would not take him but if you do write significant notes in your journal.
He's not that bad as everyone is claiming him to be. I mean he states at the beginning of the course "if you try hard you might get a B," and that's what I got. The subject matter itself is just either hard or not interesting but you will learn a lot about philosophy. He knows what he's talking about and you can learn a lot from him. NO CELL PHONES

Decent. On syllabus are questions for weekly reading/journals. Answer those questions cus that's what's on exams. Journals are given to you during exams. Understands what he's talking about and has passion for the subject. Try to stay awake and take notes. There are worst professors out there. One of few classes I learned something in.
i was really surprised by the negative reviews here.. I dont have a single other professor that is even capable of speaking for an hour and a half on some of the most intriguing material you will ever hear. Tough, but worth it if once you grasp the material.
This professor honestly is the worst teacher i have ever had my whole educational career. He started the semester by stating, "If you plan to get an A in the class you might as well drop this class now... I only give 2, 3 As at most" He grades on this statement the first paper no one got an A the midterm 1 person got an A-.

I really didnt find the class all that difficult, but then again I dont have an addiction to my laptop or cell phone. You will get a lot out of the class if you pay attention to the material, even if your grade isn't as high as you might like.

I'm not sure why everyone is so hard on this professor. He teaches on the college level, so if you have no interest in learning or challenging yourself then don't take him, but then why are you in school to begin with? His lectures are interesting and eye-opening. If you go to class and pay attention you'll be fine. Take good notes.

He talks for the entire class, and when you say something that challanges him he calls you out it front of the whole class. He does not allow cellphones,and permenantly takes it away if he catches you. he basically tries to teach you to hate corporations.
This is the worst professor I've ever had. Not only is he a terrible teacher of material that is hard to understand, he is on a total power trip. Seriously I maintain a pretty good GPA and this prof gave me the unforgettable influence at lowering my gpa. Trust most the guys here I thought that I can do well and this really shoulnt be too hard but it is. It really is an impossible course and I have to say the prof was a lil wack on the head.

I got a B in this class surprisingly since everyone else got C's and below though I am definitely not bragging. I think he's a really intelligent professor but he does ramble on about things and isn't very helpful if you don't understand the concepts. I basically reiterated everything he said on tests so that I could do well & it worked thankfully

Only two tests and one paper. No homework except the readings. Readings are not long but challenging.Take notes and read the readings more than once and you should be fine. If you skim through material then you should avoid this class.

Terrible prof. This guy gets himself lost in his own ramblings. Tests are in essay form. The guy advises you to write as clearly and concisely as possible, but even if you write for the entire period with all the correct info, he will still say that you've missed some points. Therefore its impossible to write a proper essay with the given time.
If you want to ruin your GPA, go to this professor. He will gladly fail you no matter what you do. When my advisor told me to switch, because he's complicated, I decided no to change. This decision was my biggest regret in life. Run as fast as possible if you see him in your schedule!!!!!
EVERYONE NEEDS TO CALM DOWN. His class is not impossible. Is it an easy A? No. Is it easy to stay awake? No, it's philosophy. Can you pass it? Absolutely. Try to pay attention and take notes, but you can space out when he rambles. As long as you read his online essays that correspond with the philosophers and study in advance (like very advance), it is possible to get an A or A-. Write everything and you're set. It's not easy, but if you're not lazy, you can do it and actually learn something.

This is a college level professor. He expects you as a student to put in the required work to ACTUALLY learn something. He is pretty clear to me. Do the reading (His online essays for each philosopher), understand the reading, and be able to speak about your understanding and you'll be fine! He hates Tech Can talk for a straight 90mins
The weekly test consist of one random question based on the reading and you only have 10 minutes to write an essay, which is absolutely absurd. Expects a full very well developed and written essay in 10 MINUTES. Purely unreasonable. The professor was very arrogant when replying to emails and responding to your work. One of the worst proffessors at this school. DO NOT TAKE HIM. He assigns extremely hard philosophical readings, to which he gives no prior explanation & then expects you to explain them thoroughly in an essay nearly every class in 5 MINUTES. 90% of class time is him complaining about capitalism & cell phones and never explains readings well.
You get out what you put in. Simple as that. You don't read the material, you won't pass; not to scare anyone. The formula to excel this class is easy: go to the lecture, read the corresponding essay on his website (which can get pretty long), show you have a basic understanding of it on quizzes. Guaranteed B. Other than that, interesting guy
On the first day of class he was very intimating. At first I didnt like him but he grew on me. There is a pop quiz once a week. 30% of your grade is pop quizzes, your midterm is 30% and your final is 40%. There is homework every class. I had to read a lot and really had to work hard.
At first I was nervous that this class was going to drop my GPA, but it actually turned out pretty informative. you need to be prepared to read a lot, but that is what philosophy is all about. pop quizzes every week, but based on his blog that you should read before the actual reading itself. would recommend to students who are engaged and active !
This class requires a lot of reading, but it is not impossible; it is totally possible to get an A as long as the work is done. There are pop quizzes every other class, but as long as the reading is done ahead of class then the quizzes are easy.

Literally the worst professor I have ever had at SJU. Not only is he a tough grader, you have to take a quiz every class where he expects you to write a well thought out essay in 5 MINUTES ONLY!! He doesn't allow students to use the bathroom, even if you ask and wont let you charge phones/laptops even if you are not using them. AVOID THIS CLASS!!

This class requires a lot of tough reading that is very hard to understand most of the time. The professor didn't offer any help with readings and gave no background knowledge about what we were learning. He would explain the information after we take the tests. His quizzes are difficult and he is a VERY tough grader! Avoid if you can!
This class really requires you to read, and there's no way around it. If you aren't willing to read and understand the material that he provides then you will suffer through the semester. His lectures are on a blog and take an immense amount of time to read and comprehend, but the effort is worth it and reflects in your grade. Avoid if possible.
Weekly quizzes were given with only a 10 minute time limit. It seemed that no matter how much you prepared, you couldn't do well. He is a very harsh grader. He does drop some of your lowest quiz grades. He never interacted with the class. The readings are from his own website, and are very complicated. No homework. Only tests are midterm and final.
Stay away!! There are weekly quizzes and discussion posts, quizzes were very hard and we were expected to write basically like philosophers within a 10 min limit. Lectures are very long and confusing. He is a harsh grader and leaves offensive, backhanded comments on quizzes. Material is explained after the quiz, which at that point is useless.

Extremely tough grader. Weekly quizzes and discussion boards. You have 10 mins to take quizzes and even if your answer is technically correct, it wont be enough for him. Discussions are out of 2 pts and his syllabi even says you most likely wont get above a 1. Unless you absolutely love philosophy and want to do a lot of work don't take his class!!
Whatever you do, for your GPA's sake do not take this guy! He's a joke. Does not respond to emails, grades unfairly, and acts as if we're PHD students of philosophy. The class is a mandatory class, but he has no consideration for all the other classes students may take, gives a crap load of quizzes on top of actual papers. Has way high expectations
His criteria isn't clear and he leaves very rude and insulting comments on your work. I got a bad grade on a quiz and instead of offering helpful advice, he left an offensive comment on my quiz. In no way does this professor care about the wellbeing of students, he just wants to make fun of them. Avoid taking this class with this professor.
This professor was terrible and a tough grader. He expects you to answer complex quiz questions in 10 minutes and doesn't explain the material till after you've taken the quiz. If you are not good or interested in philosophy do not take this class.
He is so tough. Asynch metaphysics and our grade consists of weekly 10min timed quizzes(that he doesnt explain until after grading), 90 min midterm, and 120min final. He provides all the reading materials and has a blog, but they are long. Even with reading it all and thinking you understand the lecture, its no guarantee that you'll pass his exams.
HORRIBLE - AVOID AT ALL COSTS!!!! Had to pass/fail this class and was worried I would still fail. Quizzes are extremely hard and unfair to do in 10 minutes, he failed almost all my assignments because he thought I "didn't understand" the material, he expects you to understand every single aspect of these philosophers, and he leaves snide remarks.
The single worst "teacher" I have had during my three years at St Johns. Hour and a half lectures with no visuals as he loves the sound of his own voice. Be prepared to teach yourself all the material as he quizzes you on subjects before discussing them. Leaves rude or sarcastic comments on quizzes and WILL patronize you. AVOID AT ALL COSTS.

We would teach ourselves everything and have class once a week and instead of helping us understand the material he would give a quiz in the beginning of every class and you would only get a good grade if you said exactly how he interprets it. When you ask for help he tells you to study for more hours instead of helping prior to the quizzes.
This class is extremely challenging - be prepared to teach yourself and rely on resources like the textbook and Unstuck ai. The professor's grading is inconsistent and lacks constructive feedback. Avoid if possible.
It's been 4 years since I've taken this class and I still despise this man. Please save yourself the trouble and do not take his class at all. He will never give anything higher than a B.
