Needs grammar lessons
Tries to teach logic and gets upset if you don't 'get it' - which is hard to do with his accent. Grades unfairly and is inflexible when you try to discuss after hours.
Professor Quan,is the worst teacher,I have ever had the most un pleasant experience in my life.I use the word Professor lightly, because by no means is he a professor.He's close minded,he doesnt care/help.Dont make the same mistake i did, drop his class.
He is pretty bad. I was pregnat in his class and he asked why I wasn't at home. After that I hated him, but he was easy. You have to read everything since he addsy thing to the test that he didnm't cover or said he wouldn't.
Guess I'm the only one who's gonna give Quan the thumbs up. He's a riot just to watch. Problem is most students still have the teeny bopper attitudes and "try and be cool". Read the book & listen up. Problem with his Accent? -Welcome to Amer
I had no idea what he was talking about. Most of the time he would start laughing at his own jokes and no one would respond. He makes learning boring. I give him 5 out of 5 thumbs down.
He is the worst professor I've had EVER!!! Don't ever take his class. He should be replaced by someone who can not only teach, but who has teaching and people skills.
He sucks! I consider myself a great student, but this professor made me sick. After reading my essay, he told me that it was all wrong, but he couldn't tell me why NEVER!! His voice is so flat and boring. When he gets mad, he put bad grades to everyone. Y

What everybody said about him is exactly right. So all I got to say is He is the equivalent of a circus monkey trying to read a book!!!!! DON'T EVER TAKE. IM JUST TRYING TO HELP YOU OUT.

Oh man, this guy sucks! I do not know how he got a job teaching. He knows absolutely nothing and he confuses the heck out of just about everybody. If there is such a thing as unlearning, you will do a whole lot of it in this nut's class. Don't take him.
Horrible people skills...laughs at his own jokes. If you can't think exactly like him, expect the worse. He doesn't know how to give a total straight answer, he talks slow and low, and I hope one day he can learn to chill out.
Why must a teacher be this stupid, horrible and worst of all, not willing to accept anybody elses ideas accept his own. He does not budge even when answers to a ques. on test contradict the answer in his book. He should be transported to a museum.
Mr. Quan is not a good teacher! He talks in monotone and he makes each assignment worth 200 pts and if you miss one question you automatically get a low score, and BEWARE his final is worth like 1000 pts ne wayz the point is DON'T TAKE HIM not WORTH it!!!

he's a horrible teacher... his jokes suck... his lectures do not make sense and always contradict what is in the book... and i miised four assignments and dropped me from a high C to a low D... most of his assignments are worth 100pts... do not take him!
I took phil 103 with him. I think he is a good teacher. I learn a lot from his class. I liked it. Just do all the homework, take notes and read the textbook. One thing the final count a lot.
He repeats the exact same thing that the book says. He's confusing and his ability to answer questions is horrid. Overall, just not a good teacher. Boring class, although if you just read the book, you should pass.

I don't know whay everyone complains about him. Most people that do so are probably lazy and to some extent dumb. His class is not hard at all and he gives extra credit if you ask him to. Sometimes his jokes are lame but overall he is a good teacher.

boring teacher, waste of time and money to talk class, learned nothing
This class is fairly easy but the teacher doesn't help much. Although sometimes he takes off points for questions that the class didn't get. The final counts for a lot but it's a fairly easy class if you read.
His jokes are lame and he DOES have mood swings but his laugh is hilarious and the class is pretty easy. So take your pic, easy class with an annoying professor.

Keeping in the spirit of "those who can't do, teach" Quan is a logics professor who wouldn't be able to think his way out of a paper bag. As dumb and incompetent as they come.
Wow, you people must be really stupid if you didnt pass his class, sucks for you. Its an extremely easy class, Mr. Quan tries to make his students comfortable by telling jokes that may not be the funniest, but his laughter is enough to make it enjoyable. If you didnt pass its your parents' fault for breeding a stupid child, go take it out on them.
Very easy class. People who complain are dumb. Don't listen to them. He's lectures may be a bit dumb but if you're looking for an easy class, this is it.

Mr. Quan has a consistency. His class uses the book probably about 10% of the time you are there. You could probably go without purchasing the book. He's great to engage in conversation because he's very roundabout in his point but when he makes his point it's clear IF you're paying attention. He's a bit elementary in it but he's not stupid. T

This subject has great potential to be stimulating and interesting, but w/ Quan it just isn't. Even the best of students will find themselves zoning out (which may be a good if you're short on sleep). One wonders if Quan himself understands what he says half the time. The material is easy but this prof. is completely unintelligent and incompetent.
i dont know what people are complaining about. i had him and he was a good professor. at times hes weird and boring but if you PAY ATTENTION then you will pass the class. He's not hard at all if you keep yourself organized. if you dont pass with at least a B then you shouldnt be in college. period.
Hes a great teacher. you just have to pay attention. Dont be absent cuz he doesnt accept late work its a harsh rule but its to help you. I think the class discussions are funny and hes a kool guy.
I will not recommend Mr. Quan for you.He is very unclear on how he wants his assignments done.He speaks of things in his lectures that are not contained in the text book or connected to it.He is not consistant.Yes,it can be easy,but only when you talk to him about the work after class.He needs drastic improvement.

THIS TEACHER IS THE WORST TEACHER I EVER HAD IN SOUWTHWESTERN COLLEGE. HE DOES NOT MAKE THE CLASS INTERESTING. THE EXAMS ARE LONG AND CONFUSING. If you want to work hard on a research paper and have it lost, be confused everyday, have your assignments changed around by the teacher and then have it affect you negatively then take Quan.
Worst teacher I have ever had anywhere. he actually had us watch star trek and report on why Spock said "That is not logical, Captain" WHAT THE HELL? I still look back and scratch my head on that one.
He's ok Tests aren't really centered around lectures, they're more off the book that HE wrote. Homework full credit is hard to come by because its either on scantron or he nit picks at your every word. Not good at answering Q's, he'll pretend to try until you say "just forget it Quan." But he does let you drop one HW and one test which helps a lot.
It's very difficult to get a good grade on your essays the first time around, but he lets you re-do it for up to full credit! You can also drop 1 test and one HW assign. at the end of the semester, but make sure to have your grade sheet! He may not be clear at times but he tries his best and really cares about his students. I really loved his class
This is the worst teacher, not professor, I have had. I attend UC Berkeley and returned home this one semester for family issues, but he is the most difficult grader. He lacks any structure to his grading. He gave me an inexplicable C on a paper and wrote next to it, "There ARE confusion." He has horrible grammar....
DO NOT TAKE HIS ClASS. He's a horroble teacher, and don't know what he's talking about. Trust me, I get a B, but it was a headache. Fist of all, his method of grading is not good at all. Second, he's method of teaching is not good. Third, he's very confusing in everything. JUST STAY AWAY FROM HIM, TRUST ME
Quan... Difficult to understand. Tests... Difficult to understand. Counselor said I'm the only person she knows that has gotten an A in his class... Think twice about choosing Quan.

How could anyone fail this class? He asks is anyone has a lower than a 'B' around mid-semester. Then he'll help you. I didn't need help, but the one's that did were just turned off by the teacher IMO. He's alright in my book. The beginning of the semester seems irrelevant, until you go over CH 6. Easy class, just listen, and stay quiet.

Really one of the most terrible teachers I've ever had. When asked a question, he passes over when he doesn't know it. He requires us to do keep and record all our grades in a system that is confusing and complicated. Terrible teacher.
I seriously think that the people who wrote good comments for this prof were being sarcastic. Leaf through his self-published book (complete with spelling/grammar/logic errors and a TON of repitition) yourself for a pretty accurate preview of the class. Just don't take him. Really.
Horrible. This class was a total waste of my time. Didnt learn a thing. However, if you want to pass a class with flying colors, this is the one to take.
Nice man, but this class is way unorganized. I cannot recomend him. Take someone else, you may get an easy A in his class but the whole semester just draggs and annoys.I wish him well, but im being honest.

WORST TEACHER EVER. Makes you buy the textbook and you NEVER use it. His lectures are confusing and seem like he made them up. Exams are equally, if not more confusing. He is extremely unorganized (does not keep track of assignments, when exams are, and the list goes on...) DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS. You will end up wasting your time.
Wasnt a hard class, you just have to know what he is looking for and that was the hard part. Just prepare to not get your papers back for a long time and keep track of all your grades on your own. I didn't learn anything I can apply anywhere else. My RDG 158 teacher, prof. Unger taught me more about fallacies than Quan did, take him or another prof
I took two of his classes in the same semester, by far the worst mistake of my college career. He doesnt not keep track of anything. And its almost impossible to get an A on essays becasue he grades with no rubric. His book that he wrote has so many grammar and spelling errors it was rediculous. I'm sorry to say this but he's just not qualified.
Quan is, by far, the worst teacher I've ever had. Extremely disorganized, and exams are written with such poor grammar that it's nearly impossible to discern what the questions are asking. takes WEEKS to grade papers, and students keep track of their grades. Easy A, but a complete waste of time. Don't take his class.
I wouldn't recommend him to my worst enemy. I'm sorry, but he's not good at all. Very unorganized. Unhelpful and unavailable. Seriously, he's so bad, you'd think you're in one of those reality TV shows (you won't be, btw. He's just not good at teaching)

Do you want someone who takes for granted the opportunity to give back to the minds of the future with an illogically authoritative, inconsistent, contradictory, uncompromising, &resentful attitude, or someone who values their students &provides a welcoming environment for innovative thinking and self-discovery? For option 2, opt for another prof.
I dont have any news. Everyone here seems to know what kind of instructor Mr. Quan is. A few students and I reported him to the dean and requested a late W because of grievances, which he had no choice but to give us. HE is under the watchful eye of the administration and for the sake of future SWC students i hope he is fired!
A lot has been stated about this professor, I don't need to add much more. I made an appt. with him; didn't change much. Make-up work was NOT allowed, as stated in the syllabus. Yet, certain people still managed to convince him...I surely hope someone can convince the Dean of this professor's poor teaching skills. Take the other prof. for PHIL-103.
Mr. Quan is an interesting professor in the sense that he portrays the absentmindedness of philosophers. He occasionally has moments of deep insight that takes the class by the storm, but it's a rarity. Sure, he is a tad boring, but otherwise as long as you read the book and do the homework, you'll be fine. It's not a hard class.
I usually try to find the good in all my teachers...but i couldn't find ANY in him. He is a complete Jerk & a horrible teacher overall. Everytime a student would ask a simple question, he would reply with a rude sarcastic remark like "I already said it, you should know." WHAT KIND OF TEACHER DOES THAT? aren't they suppose to help us? He sucks.
Very unorganized, rambles on, does not explain homework assignments well(forgets there is even homework due), tests have no relation to lectures notes or book (He never uses the book).Grading scale is horrible. I would not recommend this teacher for any type of class, especially a topic such as philosophy.
I'm taking his class right now and honestly, i regret it. He's unorganized and unhelpful. I can't learn in a class if a teacher doesn't know how to teach. I was expecting power point lectures but it's like he just randomly talks during class and he may be a little rude to students who ask questions, or repeating something.
l was very interested in the subject before this class. he is a horrible teacher. there are too many problems with the class to write them all down here. he doesn't teach philosophy and logic. he teaches grammar and common sense. please do not take this class if you are interested in the subject matter.
I took his class last year and it was the worst. He makes NO SENSE! He lectures the whole time and scribbles on the white board so you cant read it at all. He isn't very clear on what he is taling about. I would not recommend him to anyone.
I found the course content from phil 101&103 to be very interesting and he really cares about his student's success. He was always willing to answer any questions, his lectures were informative& grading was very fair. Now I'm at UCSD and these classes are comparable to the classes here. I really enjoyed attending class &I learned so much!
Teaching method was clear and well-ordered making understanding and note taking easy. Obviously, the professor was well prepared and knowledgeable in his field and sticks to the issues. Good class.
The professor sure made the class enjoyable and interesting. Lectures were good. Students were encouraged to come up with answers to questions. I have learned a lot about philosophy. This probably will be useful someday.
When I took philosophy the last time, I didn't enjoy going to class. But when I take Professor Quan's class, I enjoy going to class. I think he is a good teacher. Also, the topic of political philosophy (Marx and Engels) has always been interesting to me.
My friend and I took Mr. Quan's logic class. He explained the nature of logic and the foundation of logic. His explanations were very clear and the examples he used really made the principles relevant and meaningful. Both of us then took the law school admission test and we passed it. We believe this class really helped us.
