Good teacher, knows his stuff
He's Grrrrreat
Awesome class, especially if you're a history major. Textbook not required, but you NEED the lecture notes. Professor is passionate about subject, and communicates well with students. Would highly recommend his classes.
Good Class. Professor is a bit rough around the edges, but really knows his history! Explained things in a way that was easy to understand. I would recommend this class
He is hot headed and a bit pretentious. The way he conducted the classroom reminded me of the way my high school teachers conducted it. As a history major myself I was not impressed.
This teacher is very animated. He will keep you awake at 9:00pm! Tests weren't too hard, you just need to take good notes.
hes so chill
Take your notes, don't txt, show up to the tests, and remember the historical significances of the civilizations. If you do this, you'll pass with an A. Did I mention he's awesome?
You either love him or you dislike him. For me, I disliked his way of teaching. I usually love history, but it always depends on the teacher. I tried to stay in his class for the credits but I just dropped it and I have never been more happier.
Mr. Alarcon is a great teacher. His tests aren't too hard if you study. You MUST take good notes. I recommend this class to anyone.
He's a fantastic and funny teacher. The lectures are super fun to listen to and the class isn't difficult. :)
Great teacher, but the test are hard. You must study
I am one who is not a fond of History, but professor H Alarcon is very easy going provides study guides for his test which are 25 questions short. His lectures are long so be prepaired to write a lot. We were asked to write one research paper in Chicago style. I recommend taking his class if you pay attention and do that essay you'll pass
He is a great teacher because his lectures are great and he is funny. With every teacher, he does have his negative sides such as he is not that understanding. We had four test multiple choice of 25 questions. One mid term with 25 multiple choice and three paragraph questions. Our final was the same as the midterm but with an essay as well.
Professor Alarcon is a great teacher, and is pretty precise
I took this class in the summer (six weeks long Monday-Thursday). The class from start to finish was nothing but taking notes. He doesn't appreciate cell phone use so those need to be put away and quiet. He doesn't always change the lecture slide when he moves on so write down almost every word he says. The Historical Signifance is KEY!!
I took History 103 these recent summer semester. lectures are very entertaining, but be sure to take plenty of notes (Just copying the slides will not be enough). He will tell you what you need to remember for exams so its really up to you how well you want to do. I was struggling at first, but ended with an excellent grade.
Took this for a summer class--went fast & not too hard. Take good notes & it will be fine. Just make sure you attempt to study. Found the teacher a good one. It is clear he has an opinion about religion--particularly Christianity. Obvious he has misunderstood some Biblical characters and Biblical history in general. Rude but a good professor.
Prof Alarcon is really into history, so it makes the class fun. you need to take good note in order to pass the tests.
This guy is great at teaching History. I enjoyed his class since I enjoy history however he spent alot of time rambling about politics and how evil guns are and how stupid America is compared to other countries etc, I guess its somewhat expected at a school in a liberal state, if he left politics out of his class it would be far more enjoyable
I don't know why everyone's giving him a good rating. I think he isn't a fair grader. He takes everything serious. The discussion board. It needs to have citation all the time. He gives you feed back then usually you'll reply but then He will still give you a low grade. Quiz is pull up PowerPoint. Test is hard needs to study. TOUGH professor !
Prof Alarcon really knows his ancient history, and the lectures are fun. Provides a reader so you don't have to buy yet another book. Great teacher!
Loved this class! lectures were interesting and the tests weren't too hard if you take good notes.
Love the professor. Took him for 101 and 103 and got an A in both. Historical Significance is extremely important. Didn't like the test but got used to them real quick. Pay attention and study. He is extremely knowledgeable and grades fairly. Makes history interesting.
You do not even need the book that is required for the class. All of the readings on the test you have to print out. He keeps the class interesting, but many times what he says in on tests not whats on power points. So write down anything you hear him say that sounds important. No notes on final and tests 25 questions with 3 paragraphs
Had a great time in the class. tests were hard but passable. You need to take good notes.
Loved Professor Alarcon's class! Thoroughly enjoyed each class as he teaches with such expertise on the topic. I also enjoyed his firmness with students. Does not take kindly to phones in class, which he shouldn't! Listen to lecture, take solid notes on what he says not the PowerPoint. Do the reading and participate in discussions. Have fun!!
Professor Alarcon is great but, it's an all lecture class outside of a little bit of assigned reading. You have to be in class to take notes . He allows recorders because he knows he talks fast and I would suggest using one. But, you can use notes on the quizzes and the tests have study guides. He gives mini research extra credit email within 24hrs
As long as you do the readings and assigned homework you should get an A. All exam material is covered in lectures so it is extremely relevant, therefore take good notes on what he lectures about cause it will be on exams. Also, the exams were pretty easy. He keeps the lectures interesting all while having you understand what he is covering.
THE most unorganized professor I have ever had. He always posted our assignments late and did not update any grades until the last possible week. I never received a response to my many emails. They were very important emails and he would not even give me a small response. I was frustrated throughout this entire class and would NEVER suggest him.
Good class. Like most online classes, you need to do the readings and make meaningful posts. Got behind on grading, but what you need to know is in the syllabus.
This was the best history class I've ever taken! We played a role-playing game about ancient Greece. Got extra credit for winning the game. Tests aren't too hard if you study.
My favorite teacher this semester. He really knows what he is talking about. He's very passionate about the subject he is teaching and it shows in his lectures. I found his lectures to be very engaging. I would recommend this teacher to anyone. His tests cover what he talks about in the lectures so note taking throughout the whole class is a must.
Great teacher really into what he teaches and is really funny. He gives you all the materials you need to pass the tests but you do have to stay focused.
Totally awesome! You have to attend class for lecture. There is a couple books required but tests mostly consist of notes from lecture and videos. Don't leave class early- sometimes extra credit is just NOT LEAVING! He gives many chances for extra credit. He truly loves his jobs and it shows. I've never liked history and I really enjoyed class.
I truly enjoyed this class. It never got boring , so I was willing to hear the lecture go on all day.
Great teacher, but do not miss class.
You have to attend class to pass if you miss class you will fall behind fast. He is Power Point teacher but also gives detailed lectures not everything is on Power point so you have to listen and write as well. Very approachable if you have question. Does not post power points online so if you miss a day you will need to get notes from classmate
He is my favorite teacher at msjc, I'm not a morning person and was willing to wake up early to hear his lectures, taking him this coming semester again for both history 103 and 112.
By FAR the best teacher at MSJC if your taking any history classes I highly recommend him. Best teacher ever.
He is a good professor in a way but he just doesnt explain everything in a assignment or major project and he speaks way to fast if you tell him to slow down he actually doesnt if you try to ask for help hell tell you its in the syllabus and does not try to help.
Professor Alarcon has become one of my favorite professors, you can tell he is passionate about what he teaches and he doesn't sugarcoat anything (which I liked). He lectures really quickly but you get used to it. He also allows you to use your notes from class when taking quizzes, so spare no detail.
Took his US History class up to after Civil War, thinking that it was going to be boring, but I was wrong. He was very passionate during his lectures, it got me hooked while taking notes. I did miss a few days due to health, but used textbooks to catch up. Extra credit is your best friend and take advantage of it, and study for the tests.
Spent whole semester organizing notes he speaks way to fast if you ask him to slow down or need help he brushes you off. He is the most unorganized professor I had, does not grade till last minute. He makes you hand write everything on powerpoint plus his lecture with no handouts plus two books. The most notes I have ever written in my lifetime.
He was great, very funny, spoke a little fast but it was a Summer (rushed class). He is a very honest grader and if you try hard he defanatly notices. I really enjoyed the videos he played for us in class and he's really into his lectures. I would defiantly take him again he makes you fell like lived History. Great Professor.
This was my first class I took with him coming in as a freshmen. He is a great teacher and has a fun way of teaching. He makes learning interesting. I would take this class again if I could! Make sure to take good notes he might let you guys use them during test. Overall great guy
Since this was an online class, attendance/participation is in the form of discussion board posts almost every week, so be sure not to miss any. Sometimes the tests have errors on them, and sometimes the PowerPoint "lectures" are hard to read, but overall Professor Alarcon is a good professor. I do wish that we got grades faster.
Must take notes! He allows open notes on test. But not on midterm or final. He makes class fun and understandable. MUST ATTEND class. Uses powerpoint. He is willing to work with you but he is hard to get a hold of online. Must see his during his office hours or in class if any questions. Notes are important to have in his class. He hilarious
this man truly cares about what he does and it shows, overall a great experience. do what you have to do and you will pass!
Great teacher, but he does have a habit of taking a long time to grade tests/quizzes. Attendance isn't mandatory, but if you don't go, you won't be able to take notes, which is essential for passing the class...
Great man. Honesty one of my favorite teachers I've ever had.
Alarcon has reasonable expectations of his students and he makes the grading and rules very clear. If you complete your greek assemblies, study for the 2 exams, and put your damn phone away in class, youll do fine. History is my least favorite subject but this was one of the more fun courses I've taken for sure. 10 outta 10 would recommend.
he is a great professor
Out of everything you learn from him, learn that his content is top notch quality. Happy learning people.
Professor is an easy professor. I got over a 100% because of the easy tests and he gives out so much extra credit. He's an extremely slow grader and is really liberal about his lectures. It just got annoying hearing his political views so much. Other than that it's an easy class.
This professor is horrible when taken online. There is no feedback except for what the LMS can grade. He leaves discussion board topics locked until the day they are due because he isnt paying attention. He may be fantastic in-person but online he is TERRIBLE!!!!
Great teacher. Does a role playing game that makes the class much more interactive. I recommend highly!
Took this class online. Pretty strait forward. Discussions posts every week, and you HAVE to cite your sources. Solid class. teacher doesn't bug you with lots of e-mails.
He's a pretty chill professor. Make sure to take notes in his class every lecture because he does go over a lot of information that will be included in quizzes and his tests. The only reason I gave a 4 instead of a 5 is because he doesn't put in grades as quickly as I'd like him to. Other than that he's a pretty solid choice.
No communication, takes forever to grade, and gives no extra credit. He literally took all semester to grade my work. I found out my grade once the class was over. He's a tough grader, and his discussions can be very vague. I sure would not take him again. It would have been better to know my grades early on.
Professor Alarcon's class wasn't too difficult and we only had one assignment a week, his power points are nearly 100 pages long so be prepared. Was kind of rude when I was asking questions about what I can do for the end-of-term project. Made the assignments and quizzes open book.
Very nice professor! Great class!
I wouldn't take his class again, because I submitted my assignments and I showed him to my assignments if I submitted, he said I never submitted my assignments. He told me that I could get an EW form to fill out. So I used EW for the course. I wouldn't recommended everyone to take his classes.
Onlines classes are hard, but he makes it pretty easy, and I learned a lot!
Prof Alarcon is a really mellow teacher. He sets up the class so you know what to do every week because the front page always relates to that week's material. Tests were open book.
I HIGHLY RECOMMEND PROFESSOR ALARCON. HE IS A HUGE HISTORY LOVER AND IS VERY EXCITED TO TEACH (WHICH ALWAYS MAKES LEARNING A SUBJ YOU DON'T CARE ABOUT THAT MUCH BETTER). ALARCON IS ALSO A PRETTY FUNNY TEACHER, ALWAYS TRIES TO MAKE YOU SMILE, AND ENJOYS WHEN OTHER STUDENTS PARTICIPATE INTO HIS DISCUSIONS. A GREAT CHOICE FOR ANY STUDENT!!!
During the first 8 days of class he was very engaged with us. When he posted a video on Monday of the 2nd week to the class about our responses to the DB I was actually excited. Then. Radio Silence. 4 weeks: NO communication NO grades. I didn't know the score for my 2nd DB or the midterm until the last week. Really frustrating. DON'T RECOMMEND.
Alarcon is a good, straight forward professor. Not to much work online and his tests match the reading materials, so it's easy to keep up and do well on the tests.
Professor Herbert Alarcon is great with answering any questions anytime. Out of many history classes that I have taken, I have to say I learned more in Professor Alarcons class than any other history class. I recommend taking Professor Alarcons history class.
Summer class so we had two chapters a week. Week one was the ONLY time we had a video summary from him in which he also would tell us what points in the chapters we didn't hit on in our discussions. In addition to weekly chapter readings we had to do a discussion with responses. We had a midterm and final MAKE SURE TO READ, you'll need citations.
Truly one of the easier classes I have taken in college! There is a lot of reading, but over a good class with good content. Usually about 1 assignment per week. I like professor Alarcon too. He seems great and I would have loved to be in his in-person classes because he seems excited about the subject. Overall, great course!
PRovides assignments on a weekly basis. Slow to grade at times, but overall a good professor.
I love this teacher, he makes class so interesting, I would take his class again if I could, best history professor!!!
Very good fun class I would definitely take his classes again!!! SUPER INFORMATIVE!!
Professor Alarcon was a delight, super informative and pretty funny. If you take good notes the class will be a breeze. Attendance is not technically required but it's important to show up because if you skip even a day you'll miss out on a lot of information.
I took Professor Alarcon's class concurrently over the summer of my sophomore year of high school. Even with the class being condensed to fit the shorter term, the class wasn't extremely hard. He was accessible, and as long as you put some effort into going over the content and reviewing a bit before the tests, passing shouldn't be very hard.
Professor Alarcon is a very chill and respectful guy. For ps101 you pay attention to his lectures and take lots of notes. This class is not an easy A but I assure, you will learn a lot of stuff. In total for the semester we were graded by 5 quizzes (open note), midterm(open note) and final (open note). He really hates the cheating done in online.
Professor Alarcon is a very good teacher. There is NO homework all semester, your entire grade will be based on how well you do on his tests. The tests are easy and they are all open note. Take good notes. It's very easy, people think he is mean but he's just straight forward and that is what we're here for, I definitely recommend him.
I would not take this course as a history major; his quizzes and exams are mainly route memorizations. It includes 2 written responses which don't require much thought. He does not follow through with the syllabus as extra assignments are added that were not a part of the grading scale.
He's the best! 4 quizzes,1 midterm, and 1 final. The quizzes are open notes but the midterm and final arent. This is a pretty easy class if you pay attention, no homework or assignments, hes funny and you can tell he loves teaching this class. If you miss one day of class you miss out on a lot of notes which he doesnt post on canvas
Professor Alarcon is a good professor, when it comes to the lecture videos. However, he is strict with AI Detectors on essays. He can accuse you for AI, even if one uses Grammarly to check for spelling and grammar mistakes. He gave me 0 on the final exam which we were able to make a fair compromise. I would not recommend his courses.
Professor Alarcon is amazing! There are four multiple-choice exams throughout the semester (25 questions each), plus a midterm and final. The exams are open-note and based on the lecture (take good notes), while the midterm and final are closed notes but provided with a study guide. Lectures are very engaging, take good notes or you won't pass!
How he is allowed to teach I have no idea. He threatened students the first day of class with legal action and expulsion for taking pictures of his slides for use as reference later. That should tell you enough. All I learned in this class is how awful he thinks Trump is, that's about it. Also his slides are worthless according to him. Made 0 sense
Do not waste your time. All I learned is how awful he thinks Donald Trump is and how awful he thinks republicans are. His slides are worthless and if you take pictures of his slides he threatens you. He literally threatened students the first day of class with legal action and expulsion for taking pictures of his slides. Save your sanity.
I straight up had a manic episode after trying to deal with his class, he assumes grammarly is an AI, acts like a high school teacher and copyrighted his own slides, and although I partially agree with him politically, he spends far more time on politics than actual lessons, for a history teacher he sure is a good case for why truth doesn't exist.
He's alright- randomly, multiple assignments with no due date began showing up in the grade book- which was pretty stressful when they aren't in the syllabus or home page. He's very paranoid about AI- I never saw my midterm grade until the last day, and with only a total of 250 points in the gradebook that can be stressful.
I took him online, fast term, it is kinda heavy, you need to read the textbook (around 50 pages per topic) and watch his videos that are 2-4 hours long per week, 1 quiz each week of 25 questions and one midterm and final., so get ready to read and have time to watch the videos
Professor Alarcon is very outspoken and knowledgeable in the field of ancient and classical history. He offers extra credit, take it. He genuinely cares about the student understanding and seeing the bigger picture. Take notes, ask questions and go to SI. Absorb the content and stay engaged in it. Thank you Professor for an awesome semester.
I got a B despite having the grade for an A. I've reached out twice and has failed to change my grade. He argues ww2 didn't stop the great depression which is contrary to evidence that major historians know. I don't believe he deserves to be Co-chair as he doesn't follow the syllabus either or knows what he is teaching. please report him, thanks.
Professor Alarcon is a hilarious professor who is very passionate about his lectures. These lectures are essential to the class and taking notes on them, not just the slides, is required to pass. There are very few tests, each test is difficult and requires note studying beware of trick questions. Difficult class, but Professor Alarcon is swell.
Most people wouldn't like him because he is old school while teaching. You take notes, study your notes, and are graded on quizzes/tests. I empathize a lot for him based on some personal things he's shared and I think he's wildly misunderstood. He is really down to earth and cares for the United States. Super knowledgeable. Would take again 100%
Alarcon was amazing. His class is lecture heavy so be prepared to take a lot of notes. He only gave out quizzes as assignments and they weren't too hard. Most of them were open-note except for the midterm and final. Not much extra credit opportunities, but the few opportunities that do can help raise your grade a lot.
