I was in the first class he taught solo. He's a decent teacher. I felt like I solidly grasped most of the material, coming from knowing nothing about physics beforehand. I missed a couple days in a row because of work, and it really threw me off. The lectures are a must--the only time I acknowledged the textbook was for those days I missed.
Sometimes doesn't cover the material well enough, but he is more than willing to answer questions. Hard and lots of homework, but it really showed what I needed to study. Open book everything, but not enough time to figure it out if you didn't study.
Awesome professor and nice guy. you get out of this class what you put in. Hard homework problems, but is always willing to help and doesn't make you feel bad for it. Anyone can pass this class, you just need to put in the work. My only complaint is that sometimes slides and lectures can be a tad unorganized. Fair grader.
This is an extremely difficult class especially if you're taking other 200 lvl core classes. We fly through concepts quickly and jump to solving difficult problems. However, Herbert is a pretty good teacher (confusing at times) and is always willing to help you.
No. It is not a good Instructor. Not at all. He doesn't help students and many topics are from the book. I will not recommend this Instructor to my classmates.
Don't expect to learn much from lectures. Each term he taught us less and less and expected us to learn things on our own. Herbert is a nice but his expectations are way too high. His hw's are hard and wont help you on the quizzes at all which are 30% of your grade. Don't take this class unless you have too.
Herbert is easily the worst teacher I've ever had. His lectures are so vague and cover the bare minimum of the subjects and yet he expects us to do very difficult homework problems that don't test what we learned from lecture, but test our ability to read the book and make time to see him during office hours. He never goes over any examples, awful.
I took Herbert's PH211,12,13 series and it was not easy at all. But it was one of the best series of classes I have ever taken. He is very helpful to students that need a little extra help and is a very understanding person. If you care about learning and gaining knowledge of physics, he's great! If your only concern is a grade, find another prof.
Herbert is a great teacher! He was very kind and understanding. I spent a lot of time at his office hours and he was very helpful to me. Some lectures were a little rough because he is a new teacher and still finding the ropes, but one of the most notable things is that I saw was a genuine drive to improve. He will be a fantastic teacher!
He's a great guy, but not the best teacher. The first two terms were doable and actually interesting but the 3rd term was just ridiculous. Hopefully he changes his teaching style and makes lectures more interesting and engaging.
Homework homework homework, be prepared to spend 90% of your time studying/doing work in this class. Having taken physics in high school I was expecting the the class to be taught the information-NO! You have to learn the information on your own! If I wanted to learn the information on my own why would I pay to go to college?!?!
Student taught class. Refuses to use actual numbers in examples. 6+ hw assignments a week (and were talking big ones, like lab reports, 12 page worksheets, online work, etc). Has online videos that you have to watch or wont understand classworl. Quizzes on things we havent gone over. Doesnt teach well. Really hard to finish all assignments
Worst teacher ever, He is so complicated, gives a lot of homework and a quiz every week, the worst thing is that quiz is a different topics from what we learn the previous week. He expects too much for use, don't take this class unless you don't have a life.
Physics is one of my favorite subjects and I was very excited to take this class, but since the first week he stars with a lost of work to do. every week we have like 5 big assignments and he wants everything perfect, if you forgot to include something he gives you an straight zero. he just expects too much from us.
WORST TEACHER EVER, HE EXPECTS YOU TO KNOW EVERYTHING. HE KNOWS HIS STAFF, IT SEEMS THAT HE WANTS YOU TO LEARN BY YOURSELF AND NOT DO HIS JOB WHICH IS TEACHING
This is a difficult course, but Herbert is a great guy. Sometimes his lectures are a bit hard to follow, and I am left confused. I'm unsure if this is my fault or his. Over time I see him improving as an instructor. Make sure to always have explanations for what you are doing on your assignments to demonstrate your understanding.
Avoid this professor while you can, he will never give you full credit, even if you have the right answer. For a very simple question he wants you to write every step.
Herbert is almost too smart to be teaching these classes. He is still working on the presentation part of the instructor thing, but he really knows his stuff, even if he does make some mistakes while presenting. He really cares, and he puts in a lot of effort. He is going to be an excellent professor some day, but for now, I will struggle to keepup
Herbert is one of my favorite teachers. Even though I got a D, I learned a lot in his course. The problem is that many questions on the homework are unique problems that require the student to combine multiple topics into one problem, then somehow knowing what to do with it. But Herbert spends more time deriving equations that are in the textbook.
PART 1/3 Herbert is incredibly knowledgeable about his subject. He is willing to go above and beyond to help you out if you ask and truly wants to help his students succeed. This class is also the biggest wake up call for those that have to take it. It is by far going to be the hardest series you've taken to date and will require 90% of your time.
PART 2/3 This series requires an unbelievable amount of work, but if you want to truly understand what you are doing, you will be given all the tools to do so. Herbert is always responsive and very friendly when asked questions and dare I say, you NEED to visit him in his office hours. His written assignments are brutal, but they teach you to...
PART 3/3 .research, and develop REAL problem solving skills. This series is super hard, but is teaching you more than just physics, it's teaching you how to adapt and overcome difficulties when you aren't even sure where to start. Stick with it, and do not be afraid to ask questions. Herbert is really going to be a gem once he finds his groove.
There is a very steep learning curve when taking his classes, but he is usually available in his office and is always willing to help where he can. He is still learning what to expect from a class and sometimes goes overboard with the homework/quizzes but he is willing to learn from his class and try to improve his teaching strategies.
Herbert is honestly a great guy, he does love his field. The real upside to this course is that you will gain lots of discipline in your education. This instructor is new, so I feel he is overloading his students. If he lowers his work load and quizzes on what he explains in class, then this would be the best physics course ever. Labs were great.
Herbert is a strange person in my opinion, he does not know how to teach and expects why to much. He is a frustrated individual and his source to vent is the students. He is on a power trip an need to go. Stay away and at another college.
Herbert is honestly the best instructor that I have ever had. In addition to his amazing lectures generous grading, the class is super easy. It is so easy that you could just attend lecture and get by with an A. He has optional extra credit homework every week. There's weekly quizzes but they rarely ever have math in them, mostly just conceptual.
I have to say his class is one of the most inspiring classes i have ever taken. the course work itself is simple but he challenges you during lecture. lots of extra credit available and he is very generous in terms of grading
He's a genius, shame he can't lecture in class, video lecs are fine. Expect 5 long assignments per week, one quiz. He will help you out, but keep in mind this class is basically you reading and learning elsewhere. In short, he will help, lectures are a waste of time and he fails to put up his end on grading. Hes getting the hang of things.
He's a good guy, he really is, but he's not a great teacher --- yet. He has a lot of potential, but for now he overloads you with assignments. Teaches you a lot more than school and about how to problem solve and manage time. He takes a long time to grade things sometimes, which is another downside, but I am sure that herbert will be great one day.
Just finished 211,212 and 213 with him. He can be hard because he does not really give in-class lectures. Read the text, watch his videos, and work through the assigned materials. Make sure to use the office hours, we will patiently work with you until you get it. He does care about the students, and will train you to be a good scientist/engineer.
This subject could be taught with much less work than was is assigned. Herbert is a smart and quality teacher, but his grading makes this class extremely time consuming. Plan to spend hours and hours on this class. Many students have failed this class and many students drop other classes to focus on this one.
Herbert is a great guy, but seemed to bite off more than he could chew by assigning a ton of homework and not being able to grade it when he wanted so it's hard to get feedback on work unless you make a point to ask for it. He is always ready and willing to talk to any student and is super helpful when you do. Class would suck if you hate physics.
Herbert is a horrible professor. All of his lecture videos are done very poorly and they are very hard to learn from. If you aren't on his good side, he will target you and grade your papers very harshly. All of his equation sheets and worksheets are always incorrect. Something is wrong with them every week and it sets you up poorly for success.
He quit lecturing halfway through the semester. He uses outdated videos where he has admitted to them being inaccurate and full of mistakes. His assignments and answer key have mistakes every week. He told the class in the last week "I don't expect anyone to get an A on the final and I am ok with that." Final was worth 20% of our grade.
This guy is absolutely brutal. He is very open about the fact he choses to make this class harder because he thinks it makes better students. He shouldn't be teaching at a community college level, he can't take criticism for any change in the way he teaches. He even brings up the fact people have had to take his class 4 times to pass.
Herbert for whatever reason, he single outs students. When this happens, he will provide improper grading for that student. Herbert is disrespectful and rude towards students. He plays off the power differential that exist between student and instructor. Herbert should leave teaching and do something else where he can not intimidate others.
Herbert is hard gl
He hard.
Herbert in my opinion intimidated me and i felt that he wanted me not to be part of the class. This is not being inclusive. Besides, he is not good at teaching.
Nightmare, if you have another option take it.
Herbert helped me improve my study habits and inspired me to such an extent as a student that I am now pursuing an astrophysics major. Definitely a difficult class but doable and in my opinion well worth it for the level of retention the hard work has given me of physics concepts. Would take again.
Herbert is great. He is going through the process of updating his materials, and shortening assignments. Provides good feedback, has extra credit opportunities, is understanding and lax with due dates. He is accessible a lot outside of the class with office hours and can set up individual meetings. Answers any and all questions, and explains well.
Herbert is very clear with expectations, format for assignments and grading criteria is clear. Answers all questions asked, even the most random questions that are not necessarily physics related. He stays on track well and is not easily distracted. Same weekly format, you get a sense for rhythm of class early on, same format as 211. He's great.
Herbert is often accessible, and quite helpful. He takes criticism well and works with students to help them learn and understands concepts. He leaves thorough feedback on all assignments and offers ample opportunities for extra credit.
I went to every online lecture through all three classes and learned a lot. All of his materials are available on his Google page, from his lecture notes to his Selected Answers. Physics is a tough class, he is readily available to help and offers many types of extra credit, they just take time. Be willing to work a lot.
Herbert is a great professor. While there is a large workload given, he always provides a lot of feedback on every assignment turned in. Furthermore, there are a lot of opportunities throughout the week to visit him during office hours where he will look over any problem/idea that you are struggling with.
Herbert is great, he has lots of extra credit opportunities, and is very accessible outside of class. He makes his own lecture videos and breaks them up into small chunks so that you can easily watch one or two and take a break. He gives great feedback on all assignments.
I finished Herbert's series and felt I learned well from all of the courses, but 213 was my favorite of the three. He provides excellent feedback and explains things well. Offers a lot of extra credit opportunities, there are a lot of weekly assignments but they are best done as soon as they're available so you can access him if needed.
There goes Herbert rating himself again on Rate my Professor. Any 5 rating is from Herbert, Stay away from this wantabe professor
Just finished this series, I feel like I entered Hell On Earth and made an escape from El Diablo (Herbert). Not a good teacher in my opinion. Herbert could not teach how to boil water.
I will be a freshman, heading to Chemeketa. My older classmates informed me to stay away from Herbert. I will head to Linn Benton. The gasoline difference will be painful, but Herbert would be worse for my mindset.
I can't speak for all the negative reviews, but in my experience, Herbert was a caring guy. He gets that not a lot of people like physics, and he did his best to try and make it enjoyable. He's a very fair grader, he was flexible with late work, and he gives good feedback. The video lectures he uses are kind of outdated, but you get used to them.
Any 5 star review was written by Herbert....no student would give this awful instructor that score. Physics is not that difficult, but a power hungry tyrant makes it difficult. Glad that I am done with my degree as an engineer, now making $140,000......stick it out, it is wroth it :)
This review is strictly my opinion of the class and the instructor. Herbert has a tendency to take advantage of his power differential. Teacher versus student. In other words, he uses his power to dominate and leverage the weak position over a student. Additionally, he is a terrible teacher.......
Not as bad as everyone says. Herbert was very nice and yeah his class was time consuming, but it's not fair to call him a terrible human being. Physics is just one of those classes where some get it, and some do not. And if you're someone who doesn't, you have PLENTY of opportunity to give yourself a cushion to pass the class with the extra credit.
I see Herbert is rating himself again!! Physic's is not difficult at all. You must work at it and keep up with the work load and be fine. However, I do not recommend Herbert, his needs significant formal training to teach and this man is vindictive. I took the remaining series at LBCC, much better their!!
Bruh all these clowns crying about how Herbert is a "horrible teacher" just make me laugh. If you think he actually rates himself, you should change your major to denial studies lol. Just get good
I do not recommend Herbert, just not an effective teacher. It appears to me that he takes on favorites with students. If you are in his inner circle all is well; if not I recommend to drop the class. Better yet take it at LBCC!!
Herbert is a nice person, loves physics & gives EC, but he simply cannot teach. His "Physics for Engineers" class is all theory with no application at all. His lectures aren't helpful and you'll basically teach yourself. He gives busy work & doesn't prepare you for Exams/Quizzes. You can get a good grade, but you will not learn Physics from Herbert
Herbert is a really nice guy! His classes are pretty lecture heavy, but they're easy to understand. He's also often available outside of class if you need help. The labs are a large portion of the grade- I definitely would've earned an A if I'd been able to attend all of them.
DO NOT recommend Herbert...........No Good! Take at LBCC like may have said!
As an LBBGTQAA+ person, I do not recommend in my opinion, because this class is not properly taught. paid hard earned money for this class and I had to self teach. I did take the PH212 at LBCC, much better than CCC.
Herbert is not helpful....any 4 or 5 rating is by himself or a buddy. Do not believe the fake ratings. Take this series at LBCC.
Calculus-based physics is a difficult course. It's worth 5 credits for a reason. However, Herbert is an exceptional teacher. He regularly updates his video lectures, and is always available during his office hours. I also highly recommend checking his assignments for errors, because he awards extra credit for each error you catch.
Herbert is rating himself again!!! No student gives him 3,4 or what the heck is anyone thinking a 5. Stay away, take at LBCC and let Chemekeata know that Herbert is a terrible instructor.
Just completed Herbert's class, hopefully I passed. Terrible instructor to say the least. Should have taken the advice from former students and go to LBCC.
I was warned that thered be too much homework, the topics are extremely difficult, and Herbert struggles to grade as much as students struggle to turn in. While he is still trying to find a balance, I can confidently say he has greatly improved these and earned "most improved Chemeketa teacher" in my book. Huge effort on fairness and is very sweet.
Herbert based upon my experience, not a good teacher or communicator of the subject matter. As many have said, should have taken at LBCC.
I think people multiply their frustration with Herbert by how difficult the course naturally is. I don't think Herberts execution is perfect, but I've seen him constantly go back to adjust and fix it to be as fair as I can see it being. Maybe I'm blinded by something, but I don't think Herbert is as bad as it seems others do.
Herbert has friends and family rate him. No student would rate Herbert anything beyond a two. I found Herbert to pick favorites and grade based upon his feelings rather than the actual quality of work. Stay away, Hebert has a temperament and is not brave enough to face me as a student when questioned. .
I have taken the entire advanced physics series with Herbert as my professor, and overall, he's great. He is super helpful in and out of the class room. He responds to emails extremely quickly and is very accommodating to students. However, he overcomplicates the learning process with large amounts of assignments that were sometimes unhelpful.
The 1's may be justified for his previous years, but I'm adamant that Herbert has greatly improved this year. Each term was a big improvement over the last, and I see that still happening for a while. Consider LBCC if you must, but I'm pretty confident he will deserve consistent 4's in the near future.
I do not recommend Herbert. I completed the Physics series in 2023 and he has not changed. In my opinion, a poor communicator and hostile individual. He does not like to be questioned and plays favorites. Take the series at LBCC. I was too poor to drive back and forth to Albany and was left with no choice.
Many Physicist are strange to begin with. Herbert is one of them in my opinion. He makes judgements about each student at the beginning, which can haunt or help you. I have personally witnessed him treating students unfairly. His grading is erratic and inconsistent at best. His ability to convey the material is terrible,
I am taking this class now! My life is miserable, partly the difficulty of the subject, mostly the instructor is awful. Herbert is just not a good teacher and I have the feeling that he has his favorites.
I also have Herbert as my instructor, I do not care for his teaching style or him as a person. If was not not so poor, I would take from LBCC.
I have no clue why Herbert gets such bad reviews. He was an amazing professor. He truly cares about his students succeeding, and he was good at teaching the material too (it is a flipped classroom but his online lectures and in class examples are good). He is a very nice person and very big on communication. Will definitely continue in his classes.
Hebert rates himself on this platform. .I would not hire him to to be a greater at Walmart or teach how to boil water.
The good ratings are from himself. Nightmare professor go to OSU and spend 3x more it's worth it.
Physics is hard and flipped learning is weird. He's pretty chill tho and grading is pretty generous.
this is not an easy class, but physics isn't an easy subject, you're going to be challenged but if you feel overwhelmed, communicate with Herbert, he will take the time to help you and wants to see his students succeed with the skills someone interested in the field of physics will actually need.
Took the series last year, it was not fun at all. I observed, Herbert's favorites and Herbert's black ball people. He is quirky with a temperament to match. When challenged, it is like dealing with a rattle snake, only a rattle and then out of know where, a strike. He has a power trip mentality and really is a weak person. Take the series at LBCC
Not a fan of Herbert or the class. Not a good instructor and a poor communicator. I recommend to stay away and take at LBCC.
OMG.....stay away, I am non-binary and a furry. Herbert is awful as a teacher, he takes a challenging subject and makes it worse. Take at LBCC, you will thank me!!!.
Herbert cannot teach how to boil and egg!! Take at LBCC any good rating is by himself or his friends.
All I can say is stay away from Herb. Awful is an understatement of the century. Take at LBCC, superior instructors and school.
Did not care for Herbert or the class. I tool the remaining series at LBCC, much better!!!
I am enrolled in this class now! What a nightmare, all due to Herbert, he can not teach how to cook an egg. He appears to have favorites with inconsistent grading.
Most of the previous reviews are not valid anymore. Grotewohl completely changed his class recently, and it changed from being too hard to now being too easy. He is going on sabbatical, expect his class to improve even more as he is dedicated to being a good professor.
Take this series at LBCC, the instructors are much better. Herbert thinks he is a professor, when he is just a community college instructor. It is like a security officer who thinks they are a cop
Herb is a terrible, vindictive and out right mean instructor. My bud took the series at LBCC and there is no comparison.
I did not care for the instructor, Herbert no bueno!!
Physics is a difficult subject, regardless of who teaches it. Now, when the instruction is terrible, things just become much worse. This is the case for Herbert, he is not good at teaching. I transferred to LBCC and completed the series there. Much, much better!
Do not recommend Herbert, a worker from Walmart can do a better job than Herbert. I have noticed Herbert selects his favorites in the class and if you are not one of them, forget being graded fairly. Take at LBCC, this is what I did!
Take the series from Angela.....Herbert needs to learn from her how to teach, grade and treat students!
My brother took this series a few years ago.....Herbert was not recommended. My brother likes everyone, with that said, I took the class with Herbert. She is great!
Herbert is out on sabbatical........there must a divine spirit! Angela has taken over, what an improvement!!
From a previous term: Dr. Grotewohl follows a rigorous/intensive lesson plan for the course topics. I observed he was always willing to respond to students questions in his office hours, slack, or classtime. Physics is a rough subject no matter the teacher. I'm thankful he was patient with my questions and helped our class to learn collaboratively
Watchout Herbert rates himself on this platform.....he is a terrible instructor!
