Tests consists of only midterm and final, however if you take notes and attend class, they aren't bad. I hate politics and I have a B in the class. Profesor himself is fair, not extremely likable but fair which is important.
If you show up and read the material and take notes easy class. Two tests may be a pain.
You'll learn TONS!
hirsh has an interesting class for the most part. if you attend the SI sessions then you will most definitely get an a or b on the 2 exams. hes a pretty nice guy but hes blunt, very blunt.
I think he is confusing, the SI sessions help a lot. Rather then going to class just go to SI and you'll get a good grade!
Did not perfer at all. Has a complex about him. Thinks he is god. You answer a question and before you can complete your answer he is already telling you you are wrong.
He's a good teacher and it's an interesting class. Bad thing is that he talks real fast, makes taking notes a little hard, but if you go to SI it's a piece of cake.
Very interesting class. You'll be ok if you go to SI, totally cool if you have Marty as the SI man! (He's the one I rate as HOT!!!)
class is alright, but go to SI to see Marty (aka Hotty!!) and you'll be fine
His class is very informative and will enlighten you. However, the only way to pass his class is to 1) Go to the SI sessions. The SI basically gives you what will be on the exams. 2)Suck it up and read the 2 books. Armadillos is actually funny.
very liberal teacher, which can be annoying to a conservative. there's a lot of information to study for his tests. test questions consist of things he "lists" on outlines and in class. not as easy as it should be, not an easy A class
I don't know what the person before me is talking about. This class IS an easy A if you pay attention in class and go to SI...SI sessions basically tell you what's on the exams...very helpful! Granted Hirsh talks a little fast but go to SI: you'll be fine
Until this class, I only dreamed of having an instructor of this caliber. His knowledge of the topic is seemingly infinite and he articulates everything perfectly. He also has an undying commitment to raise awareness about, and prevent, genocide.
Liberal, liberal, and liberal. Not just liberal like most college professors, but Michael Moore liberal! Narrow minded and bias! Did I mention his liberal bias?
One of the most intelligent people I have ever come into contact with. One of the leading experts on genocide. Great person to sit down with during office hours and pick his brain. you must go to class and study but he makes it easy to do so because of the way he presents the information.
Very liberal dude, but cool teacher, knows his stuff and can make some interesting jokes, only problem i had with him is that all there is a mid term and final for your grades but if you go to SI sessions the class will be a lot easier
When i got to his class, he started out with a quote from Hitler "What luck it is for the ruler that people do not think".he is liberal, i am conservative, but hes knowladgeable and i learned the most from his class than any other, definatly take this class, i hated him at first but hes cool.
This is not an easy A class, but he is a very good teacher. If you pay attention in class and study his notes you will do good!!!
Warning: VERY liberal (not a problem for me, but for some). Some call it bias... I say, HE'S the researcher, he has a doctorate. Anyway, easy tests (memorize the lists) I thought, and I didn't read the books (he explained what we needed to know). Attended an SI or two... should have gone to more.
One of the most intelligent, educated professors I have ever had in all my life. His knowledge on the subjects of Vietnam, genocide and world politics is extremely immense. He defintely isn't afraid to share his opinion either. Very interesting class too.
GO TO THE SI SESSIONS!
He was one of the finest professors I have had. I wish I was a history major so I could have an excuse to take another class with him. Yes, he is a liberal, but he is educated and open to discussion. If you want to debate a conservative view with him he is more then happy to oblige. I miss his class.
awesome. take his genocide class if he still offers it. best professor i had in college.
He hates freshman but his upper level classes are amazing
He is very hard and not very helrful. You have to go to his classes to be able to pass. Also attend the SI sessions it helps alot.
My class was about 200 students so our only grades were our mid-term and final. If you go to class, read the books and attend SI sessions you will pass. We had no papers, I guess because the class was too big. But if you dont go to class or read you will fail.
Some people don't like the class since you only have two grades, a mid-term and a final. But then again you don't have to worry about papers or naything else. SI really helps, it makes it much easier to study for his exams. Hirsch's POLI 103 class is kinda hard when you consider its a 100 level course.
I WOULDN'T RECOMMEND HIM.
This class was great! I enjoyed Hirsh's lectures. He is very opinionated yet appreciates and listens to the opinions of everyone else. YOU HAVE TO COME TO CLASS. He bases much of his 2 exams (your only 2 grades) on lecture material. Great professor!!!
Great professor, not such a great atmoshpere given he looks toward a class of dopey freshman for enlightened political conversation. Liberal guy, but very educated in his position.
Alright class...a little boring-but what class isn't. I definitely recomend going to SI---although the SI instuctor--Tori is extremely rude and annoying--she does get the job done though and explains info to get a good grade. Don't need to go to all of SI-but go to some. If you need this class--take Hirsch...he's decent and test aren't too bad.
Don't take this guy for upper level classes if you are a poli-sci minor. He expects you to know everything about everything and put it into context. I'm a straight-A student with a C in his class because he'd rather you turn in a glorified book report than a paper about what you actually learned. Pretty awful teacher.
not a hard class at all if you study for your tests. Hirsh knows what he's talking about and makes lectures interesting and material very clear. I would recommend taking his class.
Fabulous teacher. I highly recommend him. He's very passionate about what he does. If you are a good writer and a diligent student, you will get a lot out of this class.
I went into this class thinking I'd get a government course. Instead, I feel like I was sat down and lecture at about his own views on politics and not the workings of it. His assigned books also seemed rarely used on the tests until the final, which felt rushed together and had mulitple flaws, included repeated questions.
Great professor. Talked more about political views and current events than actual government. Pay attention in class and take notes. When he says that his exams consists of "fill in the blank", he really means short answer, so study for that. Other than that--he's a great professor. I don't regret taking his class.
His class is not that bad you just have to go and take decent notes. he does talk about his own views which make the class less boring. go to the SI sessions those help out a lot.
At first, this class scared me because your whole grade is based on just 3 exam grades. Make sure you go to class, take good notes, and get notes from blackboard, and you shouldn't have a problem with the exams. The SI sessions were also super helpful. Not an easy class, but certainly not that hard.
There are only two exams which are not very difficult. All of the material comes from the blackboard notes. I got an F on the first exam because i read the book. I only studied the blackboard notes for the second one and got an A. He gave me a B in the class. Don't waste your time going to class or reading the book. He's a nice guy.
He is rude, yells, and goes on a rampage about absolutely nothing at all! He doesn't even teach the curriculum!
Hirsch is the worst teacher I have ever had in my entire life! He is rude, he yells at you and he has no consistent grading key. He ridicules you about your skills and he isn't understanding that we are human not robots, he needs to go!
HATE! HATE! HATE! I have never felt so angry in a class as i do in his class...Worst professor ive ever had. Has a horrible voice that makes my skin crawl...on the first day of class he told us all that we were all IDIOTS and that we have all been making bad political decisions forever, and hes here to fix us! JACK ASS...HATE
he's intelligent and teaches the stuff most professors won't. His tests are fill-in-the-blank and multiple choice, but the SI sessions are very helpful. If you miss class, sometimes he changes his lectures up so Blackboard stuff isn't as reliable as going to class. If you go to class and the SI sessions as much as possible you'll get an easy A.
Great teacher. Very passionate speaker. Is open to questions. Go to the SI sessions if you need help - the worksheets given out are great to study with.
I would recommend not going to class and using the time to read the notes that he posts online because that is where the entire test comes from. Don't even buy the book. Even if you do poorly on the first exam he "grades on improvement" meaning that as long as you do better on the second exam he will curve like crazy.
Hirsch is terrible! His class makes no sense and all he does is yell and scream at you for not agreeing with him. His voice is irritating and everyone walks out on him. He is so angry and rude! Tests don't match what he teaches either. Go to SI
He's very rude, disrespectful, and abrasive. Do not go to his class, read notes and go to the SI sessions. Do not dare raise your hand to ask a question and/or add to the discussion. He will reject/embarass you in a class with 300+ people. His voice is irritating and it doesn't get any better. Only takes attendance on exam return days.
If you do take this class you have to make sure you go to class and get the notes because he doesnt post them on blackboard (if he does, some of them are missing information). GO TO ALL SI SESSIONS!!! I would have failed if I didn't go but i ended up with a B. Work hard and you'll do well.
Hirsch is real, and expects his students to be too. To a freshman he may seem harsh, but take an upper class course with him.I took him for both 103 & 364, I know. Hirsch has a huge wealth of knowledge; there is no one like him. He is an expert in his field, and is an amazing professor. Be prepared to work, but you will come out better in the end.
His tests are frustrating and he provides no way to engage the material other than cramming for tests. If you want to pass, make sure you attend SI Test Study sessions (the others aren't absolutely necessary unless you don't understand the material). He has a bit of a short temper for students who try to leave class before he's done talking.
GO TO THE SI SESSIONS! He's very opinionated, but I enjoyed his approach to American Government. Exams can be tricky but are definitely passable. NO EXTRA CREDIT. Three exam grades, thats it
It is a great class, if you have the opportunity to take it do so. There is a lot of reading and several small papers, but the books are interesting and well written, and he gives great feedback on your papers. The papers is all that you have to turn in, no midterm and no final
S.I helps for the short answer questions, but the multiple choice questions come out of no where
Dr. Hirsch is passionate about the subject, and I found his lectures very interesting. Attendance isn't mandatory, but exams include some material only covered in lecture. If you study the notes and **attend class**, you should have no problem.
Professor Hirsch is not a bad guy.The only way to pass his exams is to cram the material on his notes. If you do that you shoudl get a grade above a C.By the way if you read other reviews there is a person who says he grades on improvment. HE DOES NOT, becuase my exam grades went up by at least 20 pts each time! But at the end my grade remained the s
He hates teaching to large classes, the feeling is reciprocated. Probably a great teacher for small classes. But totally a worthless class in a large setting with no discussion.
Good Professor, Hard class, Need to be regular to the class. I got an A in this class.
Amazing teacher, full of enthusiasm, and really knows his stuff. If you want to get an A in the class....GO TO CLASS. Also, go to the SI sessions. All you have to do is study the study guides that the TA gives you.
This was my least favorite class at VCU. Hirsch's teaching style is terrible. There was no well defined structure to his lectures. If you can manage to understand what the guy is saying past his extremely frequent & annoying throat-clearing, you might have a clue what is going on. He was also against blackboard, which made things very inconvenient.
Hirsch is a really nice guy. Even though it's a wee bit annoying when he has to constantly clear his throat and goes on tangents. Kind of a hard class but go to the SI sessions because that's really helpful. He usually posts up his notes on blackboard too.
Hirsch is a good teacher. Very interested in what he's teaching..MUST MUST MUST be a regular to class. there are only three grades in the class so STUDY!!!
overall, a pretty negative guy. He always some rude comment towards vcu students or students in general. he doesn't like it when kids come to class and leave 30 minutes afterwards so if you're planning on leaving then i suggest not go. there's only 3 exams so one bad grade can kill your grade. SI sessions only help with written part.
DO NOT TAKE HIM BY ANY MEANS. The only way to pass this class is to go to the SI Sessions. He hates pretty much everybody especailly if your last name is Clinton. Extrememly negative towards any and all aspects of our government. It is impossible to stay awake through an entire lecture, bring an ipod.
Hirsch is a pretty good teacher. He clears his throat alot which makes him kind of hard to understand. You really don't have to go to class that much if you don't want to. All you need to do is STUDY THE NOTES he puts on Bb, and if you can go to an SI session. I didn't go to class that much and still got a B and his tests are super easy!!!!!!!!
He's a nice guy if you speak to him. He likes to know people are interested in what he's teaching. Tests can be difficult and he doesn't curve them. He gives A LOT of notes but if you make your own study guide, you will pull off a B in the class. Class attendance is not mandatory but sometimes his classes are pretty interesting!
Don't go to SI sessions unless you didn't go to class. Show up to class, take good notes, study those notes and get a good grade in the class. He made some remarks about how stupid VCU students are and how ashamed he is of teaching here so that's kinda annoying
-you don't need to go to class. I went to every lecture and there was only one time when something he said in class wasn't on Bb.-for the written questions, memorize the lists (all of his notes are lists that don't make sense) on Bb. You don't need to understand any of the info--writing down what he says during lecture is unnecessary--he's easy.
CLASS IS BORING! HOWEVER tests are easyyyy. MEMORIZE the meaningless notes and GO TO THE SI and you'll get an A. he's old and monotone, but sometimes if you try really hard to listen he'll say something funny but then at the end of the class you realized you didn't learn anything useful at all. you only get FOUR grades in this class so make them good.
Hirsch is a good guy in his own way. He doesn't teach well. He stands up there and goes on rants for no reason. Go to SI and you will be fine!
Professor Hirsch knows his stuff. However, he sometimes is a little all over the place. He's a nice guy and the tests were ok. If you go to SI you are guaranteed an A (that is if you can get in them... many of ours filled up fast.
Very passionate about what he teaches and makes it an interesting lecture.
He knows what he's teaching, but is VERY BORING. If you want an easy A go to class and attend the SI sessions. His tests are somewhat easy unless you memorize stuff from class and the SI sessions and if you glance through the book. I would never take this class again.
This class sucked...your grade was based on three test. I didnt learn anything at all in this class.
Seriously, after readinng all of these reviews I was terrified to take his class- but I just finishned yesterday and he was seriously my FAVORITE teacher in 5 semesters of college and 2 schools. He's so passionate and knowledgeable about the subject and is a really good guy and helpful when you ask questions. TOTALLY TAKE THIS CLASS!!! SERIOUSLY.
Lectures make no sense...better off not going to class and just reading the material...
Considering how large the class size was, this really was an okay class. His lectures were usually pretty interesting. We did cover a lot of stuff I already knew and the tests required a lot of memorization, but those are my only negative critiques. I never went to an SI session and still got an A. Just don't skip class and do your reading!
The material isn't that difficult, but it is hard to decide what he will test on as he is not very clear in class. If you ask him whats on the test, he basically calls you stupid and incapable of getting beyond Bb. I wouldn't recomment it.
Class is not mandatory, and you'll find yourself showing up less and less for his lectures. He is boring! If you memorize the outlines he posts on blackboard, you'll do fine in the class though.
Herbert Hirsch is brilliant. That's all there is to it. If you want to really learn- not just read off of a power point or listen to a dull, pointless lecture, TAKE THIS PROFESSOR! Gov't is an incredibly boring topic in itself, but Dr. Hirsch is an author on genocide and a distinguished scholar- THIS MAN KNOWS WHAT HE IS TALKING ABOUT!!
I think the only students interested in his class are poli sci majors. Sure, he's brilliant, but he's bias. Cynical. Mean. In order to pass his class with an A, you have to go to all his lectures because the material on the the test is crazy. You never know what he'll test you on.
Hirsch is brilliant and passionate, with a healthy dose of cynicism and frustration thrown in. His lectures are great, and yes, he is a hardass, and can come down on students sometimes. But the ones he comes down on deserve it anyway. The tests can be hard, but study, and you should get a B without too much difficulty. Listen, he knows his stuff.
he is a very biased teacher pushing his liberal ideas on the students, has no organization and very unclear on waht he wants you to learn
ok...... this guy sucks.. i mean he teaches well enough and what he teaches comes across ok. the questions are easy, but only if you came to class and payed attention. he gives 3 tests... thats it!! no curve. i think he is annoyed by all of us as students because we're "lazy and spoiled"... his grumpy old man speeches were the only highlight.
Simply, the man is brilliant. Going to class is a must, and if you can't do that posters below, you need to rethink going to college. 1 text, 2 outside books. Both outside books simple, quick, easy, and fascinating. Tests couldn't be easier. I'm a psych major and I aced this. I can't recommend this man and this class enough.
seriously SO BORING. I took this as a freshman planning to attend all classes.....and quickly learned I was better off at home. Honestly, you should listen to the lectures because there's stuff to add to the basic 1 worded notes he gives out. Pretty difficult to keep my attention and there is only 3 tests. that's it. no other grades.
dude clears his throat like 500 times a class wtf!!!! hard to pay attention to his talking cause im laughing soo much.... wow
He knows his stuff, but he is the most biased professor I have ever had, and by a wide margin. He teaches his opinions and observations as fact, and constantly shows disdain for views that are not his. By the way you do need to go to class at least most of the time.
Professor Hirsch is a great professor! I was a little intimidated at first, but he really is a great teacher. He makes government really interesting, with his powerpoints and class discussions. I loved coming to his class. He's also a really funny guy. All his test material is straight off of Blackboard so it's not hard to do well. Great class!
Hirsch is a decent professor. I would recommend taking a genocide/human rights course by him because he is an EXPERT, as far as U.S. Government is concerned, I did not learn anything that I did not already know. He is a cool guy though, offensive to some (Conservatives/Republicans).
I attended every class, read all the books, went to all the S.I. sessions, and found this class difficult. He's very biased, and seems to have an attitude of wanting students to fail (every class he says don't whine about grades over and over and over). He is a smart man and seems nice/helpful in person, but for a 100 level class, this was redic.
Great class, great teacher. Hirsch really compels students to take an honest look at history and humanity. I took it because I needed an elective, I'm glad now that it was the only course that fit into my schedule last semester.
Interesting class. He takes attendance randomly every once in awhile. Go to the SI sessions and Marathon sessions and you will do fine on the exams. He only has three exams. I suggest going to the class. Plus he's funny. If you know who Larry David is, and you like him, take Professor Hirsch though. YOU WILL LEARN A LOT.
Whoever says SI for this class must have been hit on the head, I'd recommend Dr. Aughenbaugh.
Professor Hirsch is a decent teacher, although i dont know why he is teaching this entry level course. If you are are not a lazy ass, and you actully read the easy text book he selected for the class, scan the notes and go to SI, you WILL at least get a B ( i got an A). Hirsch is, however, rude (something he takes pride in because LBJ was rude and
Memorize the notes he gives you and read the assigned readings!!! I can't say much more than just that. His tests are decent. Sometimes his notes don't make much sense, but ... come to class, read, take notes, memorize. He is very rude though and if you don't want to listen to someone complain on the world, don't take his class.
One of the worst teachers I have ever had. Lectures were pointless. He posts lecture material on BB. I suggest reading the textbook and memorizing the online lecture notes to pass the course.
Do not take his class. He's a horrible professor who complains about the government during class. He rarely uses text to back his teaching. He posts all lecture notes on BB. The points he makes in class are ambiguous as he puts his opinion in a lecture very frequently.
Professor Hirsch I am sure, at one faraway point, was a friendly and helpful teacher. This, my friends, has changed. He is bitter, mean, and condescending to every student- he makes a pt to ridicule every question asked in class. His lectures don't cover anything- he only does 3 exams, which are very loosely tied to the info- DO NOT TAKE HIS CLASS.
he is a cool guy, and tells the truth about Americans and how lazy and forgetful they are, but his exams are BS. 3 exams the whole semester 50 questions each. no study guide. plus he tells us to read two novel sized books at the end of the semester..F* that. but if you are really good at history and memorizing this is easy.
I love Hirsch! If your not interested in The Vietnam War or the 60s then don't take this class. Three papers on the books. Answer the questions given for the papers and use sources to back up and you'll get good grades. Randomly takes attendance, miss three of them and your grade goes down a letter.
He's an old grumpy man.. but at times it is funny. Clears his throat a lot. Read one chapter in the textbook, then realized most of the tests are from lecture. He pisses a lot of students off because he should be teaching higher level POLI classes. Sometimes takes attendance.. SI SESSIONS WILL SAVE YOUR LIFE.
POLI 103- He is very knowledgable. He definetly knows his stuff...BUT for someone who doesnt know too much about politics or is uninterested, the class is pretty hard. 3 EXAMS and thats it. No opportunities at all if you dont do well on the 3 exams. SI sessions are what got me through this course.
Hirsch is an articulate man but exudes negativity. He constantly preached about how we could not write papers, but provided very little feedback on how to make them better. While he is entitled to his own views, he fails to recognize that so is everyone else. His lectures are biased and he does not allow you to form your own opinions.
What a joke...just rambles on each class about how the republican party is responsible for all the countries problems. the three exams covered approx 25% of the material. Each exam was 50 questions but he asked the same 15-20 questions 2 or 3 times. Very opinionated. Doesnt offer study guides or extra credit. He sucks.
Seriously, don't waste your time & money.
He is the man. It is true that he is biased, but he is so insightful. As far as the books go, War is a Force is really good, but I didnt like Yellow Stripes much. I finished 1 point away from an A but its because I messed up on the second exam and didnt study. Go to class because if you do he will like you and his exams are based off lectures.
grumpy old man, spent more of the class whining about the state of the world/people leaving early then actually teaching, then he's baffled at why people do poorly on tests when hes barely taught anything.
At the beginning of the semester, he scares people by stating how tough his class is & how most of the class fails his exams, but he is not that bad. Attend lectures, take notes, and go to SI and you will get an A. Don't bother reading the two books b/c he will tell you in class what you need to know about them and his EXACT words are on the exam!
Hirsch epitomizes grumpy, bitter, contemptuous old man. He emphasizes that this is "not your high school civics course". False. The material is identical to my high school civics course just with trickier tests. The lecture notes he posts on Blackboard are just lists of topics. Prepare to go to class and take notes rather than relying on Blackboard
Had his class last semester and is by far the worst teacher i have ever had. there had been days when he rambled on about how reagan was the worst president in history and other crap that had no relevance to the topic. do not take this class!
He's very seasoned in the polisci field and definitely has his biases but I disagree with the people that say he imposes them on other people. Go to class, SI sessions, and read the chapters, he takes test questions directly from lecture & textbook definitions. Overall though, pretty easy if you actually go and pay attention. Good professor!
He is a very engaging and enthusiastic professor. Those that gave him poor reviews are probably lazy or not very politically intelligent. IF you read the text book readings you should get an easy A. He is def biased to the left, but NOT closed minded. He WILL NOT impose his opinions, though he will give them alot! No excuses & no extra credit.
Very profound. One of my favorite classes taken at VCU. Extremely intellectual and inspiring, I highly recommend him if you care about an active and stimulating learning experience.
Don't be fooled by the negative reviews on here. If you actually attend his lectures and pay attention instead of surfing Facebook for an hour, this class is a breeze. S.I. sessions can be helpful. No surprises or tricky questions on the exams. If you enjoy dry, sarcastic humour and have to take POLI 103, take Hirsch!
My one regret i taking this class. The whole lesson is his opinion with litle facts. The class test average is a 72 so that should say it all. If you want to hear a grumpy old man complain about government then go ahead and take it.
Claims he is not biased, but is very biased. His power point outlines suck, and if you ask a question he treats you like an idiot.
It's true, Hirsch does not teach a by the books U.S. Government class. I took AP , and it was nothing like his course. You have to know U.S. politics before you can understand what he's talking about. He's justified in being a grumpy old man. Students these days just have no comprehension of actual learning. I got an A solely from prior knowledge.
Unless you have an interest in this subject do not take his class. He has extremely boring lectures. I didnt mind him much as a person, he is a grumpy old man. Like previous comments said the class average on the test are typically in the low 70s and the only grades you get are his 3 exams. All opinion based. Go to SI sessions if you take the class
This class was very hard for an intro course. Tests are based off of scattered and poorly constructed lectures. Professor puts opinion-based questions on exams and is condescending towards students. If you don't love politics and are required to take this course do it with any professor but Hirsch, otherwise you will be struggling to get a C.
Great teacher. He is very opinionated and good at speaking them. His lectures are not like a typical poli sci course because he is actually critical of govt and therefore can relate to most people. His lectures speak of all the things Public Schools seldom talk about. Go to class, his lectures are excellent.
professor Hirsch is one of the most intelligent professors I have ever met. He is very passionate about his work, and if you put in the effort you can get an A and if you are struggling I recommend talking to him during office hours. if you want to see a out of textbook view of politics this is an eye opening class.
Dr Hirsch is very smart and knowledgeable Prof.;if you want to learn take him,if you want to play around don't take him.Do not skip his classes, do not be late, you have a question ,he will go above and beyond to answer it, knows all games students play don't embarrass yourself playing any kind of games with him,he is patient & wants you to succeed.
Dr. Hirsh is a very intelligent guy, but his 103 course is too hard from a 100 level. He should simply be teaching at Villanova or Syracuse cause he looks like he belongs in the north.
i'm not interested at all in government and he's so grumpy, i rarely went to class but i got a really high B, GO TO SI MARATHON SESSIONS because the study guide is just like the test, DO NOT show up to class late or he'll yell at you in front of everyone
Stay as far away from Hirsch as possible. It's not that the material is hard, it's just that the material he teaches is only 50% of what we get tested on. One time he said everything tested is n blackboard. If that were true the class test average wouldn't be in the 60s. Comes in with a grumpy attitude as well. Spare yourself and take someone else.
Professor Hirsch is a wonderful instructor. He expects a lot from his students. Due to his expectations, many students complain and grumble about how unfair he is. Nonsense; come to class, read your books and study. I received an A. So can you.
His humor is what gets me through the class. He usually rants off about politics and how government in general is unfair. You HAVE to STUDY. He gives you all the info you need, all you need to do is take it in.
If you're into politics, you'll like his class. To get an A, all you have to do is go to class, SI sessions, and READ the textbook. Not that hard. Typical 100-level class, not hard but you do have to put in effort
He isn't so much as a bad guy per say. He just isn't clear as to what will be on tests. I took him Spring 2012 and he told me to wait until the midterm to see what my grade would be ( he gave his midterm after withdrawl period and I already had a D from test 1). I ended up with an F. If you can help it don't take him. He's really hard
Stay away from this professor. His opening statement for this class is that "People are entitled to their own opinions, but not their own facts." However, all of his lectures consist of HIS opinion on how our country's political system is corrupt. None of his lectures have any relevance to the readings. Your only hope is to memorize the book.
Hirsch is cool. He's funny and smart, but he hates the government. His whole class seems to have his opinions as the foundation of the class, but attendance isn't mandatory. He posts everything online. The 3 exams are your only grades in the class, so go to class when you can and read the textbook. As for SI, she wasn't helpful at all.
Professor Hirsch knows the material well, but the course is very disorganized; he goes way too fast through the powerpoint slides, the course documents are all clumped together on blackboard, and the tests are formatted very sloppily. Make sure you go to class, try to think like him, and study hard. I didn't do SI but I think it would help.
If you can handle relying on your final grade being based off 3 grades alone, then by all means take the class. Although Hirsch is helpful, you must do your part in order to be successful. Come to class, do the readings, and attend SI sessions. Although he is hard on his students and expects a lot, he has a great sense of humor. If lazy, dont take
Hirsch is a cool professor. For my class, all the notes were online and the SI emailed out notes, so attendance isn't mandatory. However, if this isn't the same for you, go to class. He goes through everything quickly. Funny class, also.
This class seems like a easy class, but his tests are really difficult. I am an A and B student, but received D in the class. I'm retaking it again with different professor. The professor is not helpful at all and does not clearly tell us what will be on the tests. No extra credit, your grade is based on 3 test. It's ridiculous.
Hirsch is funny. For my class, all the notes were online, so I never went to class. His questions on the test are literally copied from the notes.. The books that he requires you to buy, don't buy them. He tells you what you need to know. Grade is based off of 3 test; so study or don't take his class if that bothers you.
Very unclear about what will be on the tests, and seems to want students to fail. I studied a lot for the tests and went to the SI sessions, but still got a C. He is somewhat entertaining, but I wouldn't count on doing well in this class unless you're already an expert on the subject. He expects way too much from a 100 level class.
Terrible teacher, very condescending and quite rude. Class is etremely boring, like being preached to..about noting. Does not cover material on tests, and does not give study guides because, we "are not 5th draders." He really just needs to retire. AVOID THIS "TEACHER" IF POSSIBLE!
Possibly the worst professor that I have had thus far. He sent out an email saying that test grades were posted to blackboard, and if we could not see our grade that meant that we failed the test. I met with him during office hour and he tossed a stack of papers at me and told me to find mine. I found my paper ungraded. He never looked at it. Awful
If you read the textbook and go to class, you'll be fine. I hate how he runs lectures, he just rambles on kind of about the topic, but I rarely get any information out of lectures. Avoid taking him if you can.
HORRIBLE, HORRIBLE, HORRIBLE! Do not take him! He talks about current events the whole time then tests you on everything BUT the textbook, his course outline and the SI session. He expects you to magically know all this information. He is extremely rude. By the drop date half the students were gone! I am very disappointed. YOU'VE BEEN WARNED!
Hirsch is rather interesting. Yes, he's grumpy. One of his test did not contain anything from SI or BlkBrd. I wouldn't recommend him for an "EASY A". Don't email him foolish questions he'll blast you IN A CLASS EMAIL. PARTICIPATE, it might help. Good grade is possible though! Good luck if you take him, but you probably wanna take someone else.
I struggled with this class. It was frustrating because professor Hirsch is an awesome professor but his tests are really difficult. I got low C's on the first two and a high B on the last test. He really knows his stuff and he really challenged me.
By far the worst professor I have taken at VCU. He stands in front of the class and rambles about what is going on in todays world and basically blasts the US government based off his opinion, and then tests us on his opinions and what is on blackboard. He is extremely rude and has no issue calling students out in class or through emails. DONT TAKE
Easy enough class. He posts all the outlines to Blackboard, his tests are straight forward, reading the textbooks helps. He's a lot nicer than he comes across sometimes and likes his students to participate, be up to date in the news, and pay attention (ie, not send him emails about extra credit when he says there's no extra credit offered).
DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS! He responds to student private e-mails via entire class. He spends most of class lecture telling us what bad students we are. If someone leaves early he spends more time telling us what bad students we are instead of teaching course related material. You spend more time being scolded then learning.
He is a hard teacher. You only get 3 exams that is it! No other grades. I opened the book once and never again! You need 3 books for this class. I was not a fan of this class at all! take someone else if you can. Lauren was our SI and she wasn't that great. She is a nice person but I did better studying on my own.
Easy class, terrible teacher.
He seems really mean to begin with, but that is because of he does not know anyone. However, he is very approachable in person and will work with you if you need to miss a test. I was out of the country and he worked with me. You need to read the book and understand the material. He posts the outlines online. Do not ask him stupid stuff: extracred!
Dr. Hirsch really isn't a bad guy. He comes off as tough, but if you pay attention to his lectures and attend the si marathon sessions before the exam you'll be fine. He's big on the Armenian genocide. He's very liberal and he makes it clearly evident. Don't be intimidated the class really isn't that tough.
While his demeanor may be slightly intimidating in the lecture hall, professor Hirsch is very approachable before and after class. He is extremely knowledgeable, and is willing to work with you so that you can excel in his classes. The material is not always easy, but he is always enlightening. Every class I have taken has been very informative.
If you have some clue what goes on in this society/ world you live in you will find Dr. Hirsch to be extremely interesting. His political beliefs are not pushed upon you although he does make the case for both parties. You really don't even need to buy the books if you take notes at lecture.
Hirsch's class is really just him talking at you. Show up for class, take some notes, and you'll be fine.
Great class and great prof. Had Hirsch for 103, and despite all the grumbling from the peanut galley he was fantastic, as long as you did the work. His Vietnam class is an entirely different beast. He relies heavily on a multi-episode PBS documentary which does a fantastic job of relaying the ins and outs of the Vietnam War. But don't skip!
Dr. Hirsch is simply amazing. Some people may say he is intimidating, but he honestly has one of the best personalities and is so nice. You learn a lot from this class, if you study enough you will do well. Go to SI sessions regularly! This class will definitely test you study skills, but it's a challenge that is very rewarding. Don't buy the book.
Dr. Hirsch is a great professor! He is very passionate about politics and encourages change. As long as you go to his lectures, he is not very hard. He is kind of funny as well. Let me make it clear, ahem, that you should go to SI Sessions & go to lectures ALL the time.
If you can avoid taking him, do exactly that. His lectures are awful and unclear. There is no knowing what to take notes on, and the tests are harder than a rocket science. Sure, he rarely takes attendance, but this class is the worst class I have ever had to take in my college career.
I took Hirsch's 103 last semester and am currently in an upper level 300 class of his AND plan to take him again next semester. He's truly an amazing man. If you can't appreciate learning from a man who is a leading expert in his field, you shouldn't be in college. Also, his moralistic approach to learning is what all educators should strive for.
This guy is ridiculous. He's a rambler and note taking is literally impossible in this class. He jumps from topic to topic with no transition. I would avoid him at all cost. And if you are luck enough to take his class, beware of his tests. They never correspond with his material and SI won't even help.
For this to be a lower-level intro class, it was overly complicated. Yes, tests were from information from blackboard but the questions would be much more in depth than the notes. He doesn't use powerpoints and his outlines are all over the place. He is very intimidating and makes it hard to want to ask for help or even ask a question.
His lectures stray from the notes that he puts on Blackboard in every single class. He goes off on rants and tangents that have hardly anything to do with the topic at hand. He often criticizes or insults the intelligence of his class if he doesn't get an automatic response to the questions he asks. His attitude makes the subject unenjoyable.
He is one of the old school teachers. He is tough and he won't make it easy for you if you try to come to him asking what can you do to get your grade up. You will fail if you do not study because his material is thorough. Please, please, please do not get up and leave because he will turn into the hulk. If you follow this you may barely get a C
Professor Hirsch is one of the worst professors I've taken at VCU. He frequently goes off topic during class discussions and sends weekly emails ranting about how certain students get up to leave or are disrespectful, and digs into everyone as a result. No need to purchase books or really attend class.
Hirsch is the worst professor I've ever had. He scolded us and insulted us often, and he's not clear. He punished our class and didn't give us extra points simply because he found out we used quizlet to study. He barely used powerpoints and his outlines are messy. He will also make you feel bad for asking a ?. Tests are somewhat easy.
A lot of students dislike Hirsch because he doesn't take any crap. Don't walk into this class expecting an A to be handed to you. Tests aren't hard but you need to study and attend class if you want to pass them, especially if you aren't familiar with the subject. He's old and grumpy but is also super intelligent and gives interesting lectures.
Professor Hirsch was one of the worst professors I've ever had. I am an older student who has come back to VCU to finish my degree and NEVER have I been spoken to as disrespectfully and condescendingly as he did. In every single class he would spend at least 15+ minutes berating the class on how terrible we were. DO NOT TAKE!
Alright, Hirsch is truly just an angry old man. Some of his lectures are interesting, but he has the tendency to be a downright ass, which turns the students off from reaching out to him for help. It's a basic government class, which is required by the school for you to get your degree therefore I think it should be somewhat easy, but it's not.
Hirsch is an amazing professor. If you are truly into your academics, and interested in political science, Hirsch is your man. Do not base your choice in taking him on the negative reviews below - decide for yourself! He acts scary in class but is always thrilled when students come to see him during office hours. Take if you're serious about school
Hirsch is obviously intelligent when it comes to material in his field and says he is willing to help, but is not always approachable. He can be very bitter on occasion. His lectures almost always go off topic and his tests ask you to answer using his opinions. His final asked questions about things unrelated to the course. Only 3 grades (tests).
Hirsh is a cool dude, just grumpy as hell. Very opinionated and hates slackers. Show up to class and study 30mins for tests and you'll pass. Not a hard class. I think he is pretty fun to listen to if you have an open mind. I'm on the opposite side of the political spectrum as him but I still thought he was interesting.
he's the best! even if you have trouble studying for his tests, he's willing to help by offering extra credit paper.. thats only if you show up in his office hours very often..! show up to class if you want to pass!!
You only get 3 tests. Each count as (1/3) of your grade. That's it. No chance for screw-ups. However, his tests are straight forward. When he isn't constantly bashing republicans during lectures, he is telling you "this will be on the test". Take notes in class. Don't read books he tells you to read (besides textbook). Pay attention in class.
Goes on so many tangents, impossible to sit through a lecture, tests based on his lectures and opinions, no si leader who has taken his class, do not take this prof - if you do, get out.
His lecture notes are pretty clear, instead of paraphrasing he reads directly off the notes. So therefore, you don't necessarily need to take notes just print the ones off of BlackBoard. The movies are very low in sound and he refuses to turn them up. He is sarcastic with a hint of rudeness.
Even though his lectures seem impossible to get through due to his random tangents and always talking about his opinion, it's really important to attend them. The tests are based solely off of his lectures and all MC. Some of the questions can be a little tricky. Attending SI sessions regularly always helps breaks down his lectures to do well.
You have to go to class to pass, and study your lecture notes. The tests are all extremely opinionated and he's extremely rude. Don't bombard him with emails, because he will yell at you. The only reason I got a B was because of the SI sessions, so make sure you go to those at least once a week if you're in his class.
Okay,Dr. Hirsch had some interesting lectures. His exams were difficult, if you didn't study. He had no problem outing the class if they did poorly on his exams. would not take ...
He is very open about his opinions, and is kind of condescending when speaking to students. He is very hard on his students.
Very opinionated. As a conservative, it was hard to sit and listen to his bashing everyday. However, he is very smart and once you get past his biased, class can be kind of interesting. Can be very rude and snarky to students who don't preform well or intentionally disobey. No extra credit. Tested from lecture and bb notes
funniest professor i have had, hirsch will make you interested in what he has to say. go to class listen study and you will pass.
Hirsch is a tough guy. He is extremely liberal and makes that clear in his lectures. His ideology is apparent in his tests / correct answer choices. He takes attendance every so often, so you might not know when he takes it. 3 tests all multiple choice based on lectures / reading. He's tough but not impossible, he is a little cynical but a good guy
Comes off hard but very willing to accommodate for the right reasons. Straight up missed a test and he let me retake it. Only grade are 3 tests so if you mess up on one you mess up your chances of passing. Focus and study and youll be fine.
Can be quite cynical and monotone. Doesn't really engage students and often thinks the worst of them. He has note outlines but difficult to catch everything. SI sessions were a saving grace
He is very opinionated, but occasionally shows the other side. He is kinda a grumpy man, but he is sarcastic and funny There is no extra credit, no homework, etc, just 3 tests. The tests are straightforward but the notes are kind of confusing so make sure you understand what the notes are actually saying. His final is not cumulative
I went to every class, took many notes, would start studying weeks out for the test and still only passed by the skin on my teeth
Haha, where to start? Condescending, dry, and overall delusional to the current state. This professor just doesn't get it! This professor is contradicting and highly unclear of what he's supposed to do. Says attendance is optional, yet cries and threatens class via email if you skip? Petty. Honestly, just avoid because this professor is clueless.
Teaming up with Aughie to teach this class, they acted as bullies to the students. He was completely unapproachable and the comments left on grading were more insulting than constructive. They seem to take little interest in the class, literally told us "this was just for fun" for them. Complete disregard for student success.
Hirsch would be an excellent professor if he wasn't so rude to his students. His notes aren't super clear but you can sort of get what he is trying to say. You are graded by 3 test so study hard and make them count.
THANK God this class had SI Sessions. I went to every si session and every marathon. His wording on his test are tricky. But although he seems mean during class, he is nice when you go to his office hours. Only 3 test so make sure you study!
His lectures and notes are very disconnected to the material on the test, don't trust his notes alone to study. Read the textbook, he does very dry lectures and doesn't go in depth on anything. His tests are poorly worded, always study more in depth then he goes in lectures. He doesn't cover much of what he expects you to already know.
If you love yourself dont take his class. If you do awful on the exams there is nothing you can do to bring up your grade, there is no extra credit so dont ask. He really doesnt care if you fail either. Please drop the class if you can and save yourself a semester of tears and struggle
Took Hirsch for History of the Vietnam War. Wasn't difficult at all, but the material was interesting and I learned quite a bit. The class was mostly lectures with two papers on books. He really is a nice guy and is passionate about what he teaches. I don't really understand all the bad reviews
Omg literally the worst class i have taken, if i could give him 0 stars i would. His emails are so rude the class is honestly a waste if you can take it with someone else please do, because your gpa will go down the drain. And theres no extra credit
I get the sense that he's incredibly smart, and that's really the best thing I can say. Hirsch's comments aren't wrong, but he does seem to enjoy being harsh on people. It's not a deal-breaker, but not totally necessary, either. Aughie could probably teach this course on his own though. Overall a net negative but not someone you can't learn from.
Is Professor Hirsch the nicest professor? No. He is a hard man, but his class doesn't have to be hard. If you study the notes he gives you and read the assigned text book chapters (know the vocab), you will pass his class. All the questions come from those two things.
- There are 3 exams that make up your total grade (tests are difficult) - Lectures every class and he goes on a rant over current political issues (none of which are on the exams) My advice: - Be attentive while in class and be proactive outside of class. He will help you during his office hours. The SI Sessions were pointless.
Dr. Hirsch was one of the best professors. He is not difficult if you bother showing up and trying to learn the material. Most of the bad comments are stupid freshmen who don't bother doing any actual work. I graduated from the VCU poli sci department and took multiple classes with Hirsch 105 364 369
