He is the catalyst that made me lose faith in UCSD's Economics Department. Does not care about what he is teaching. Is one of the most boring lecturers on campus. And the tests are NOT easy.
Like 90% of the econ professors, his tests follow the problem sets TO THE LETTER. If you expend even a marginal effort by doing these, you can pull off the easiest A you'll ever get. Furthermore, all lectures are PodCasted and available online in PowerPoint. Those insipid whiners who rated low should just drop out because it doesn't get any easier.
don't take him nuff said. he's one of those teachers that get off on failing the whole class
Awesome teacher. Go to lectures everyday, work through his problems on homework sets and you'll do fine. His tests are sometimes difficult but are mostly representative of what he is teaching. His curve is generous so don't be scared off by a grade that doesn't look well on paper.
Prof Newhouse was a very clear and straightforward lecturer. Midterms were difficult, but the curve was always very good. Do the problem sets and go to office hours, and you'll be fine. He is one of the better econ professors in this university.
Honestly, he is one of the easier teachers for Econ. All you have to do to get an A, is to study his powerpoints and do the problem sets. That's it. No book reading, no Econ tutor. Don't listen to the other people who think its a "hard" class. He's a pretty straightforward teacher
Pretty easy. but he's a bad teacher. extremely lazy (he doesn't correct his notes online, instead he makes up some bs that it's to keep us honest in attending class and it's our responsibility to catch his (many) mistakes) He also is incredibly boring and when the material gets harder, he becomes unbearably unclear in teaching the materials.
didn't really attend class(maybe a few times a quarter), all you have to do is study from his past exams to get an A, he allows notes so it makes it even easier
Considering that this was his first time teaching 100B, he wasn't the greatest. He taught the course too slow in the beginning and we ended up not covering 2 of the chapters mentioned on the syllabus. Also, his tests are a lot harder than the examples shown in class. Maybe he's easier in other classes, but not the best for this class.
HANDS DOWN BEST PROFESSOR AT UCSD. FOLLOW PROBLEM SETS AND PAST EXAMS, DONE DEAL.
Newhouse is clear in explanations, gives out the lectures slides on WebCT to take notes on, provides ample examples in class and through problem sets. he is helpful in office hours and very understanding. the one issue is that his tests are quite difficult (but that's the 100 series for you). take him for sure!
He is very clear normally, but when we are behind schedule, he has to rush pretty fast and gets pretty bad in explaining stuff. I did well in the MTs. But the final made me ANGRY because one of the questions is two-part tariffs which he said is unimportant and won't be on the final!!!!! Darn!!
Dissatisfied. The material isn't hard, just tedious with all the advanced math. But the midterms are a little ridiculous... he rewords everything in a fashion that confuses many, and throws random broad conceptual questions when in class, all he emphasizes on is the math. We are 2 days till the final and he just posted new material...Not cool.
He is the best professor if you dont like surprises. He is very direct & lets you use a page of notes for the final and half a page for midterms, and his tests are mostly identical to the problem sets and practice tests, with slight changes. If you put in a little effort you will get an A. If you cant get a B with him, you shouldnt be in college
lectures r very clear! midterms r easy as long as u do his practice, final is alittle bit difficult but u will be fine! he is the best professor i hv ever had in ucsd. all i want to say is 'must take his class! otherwise, u will regret!' :D
Not a tough class. Provides lecture notes to print out and bring to class. If you don't want to go to class, look at the lecture notes, and highlight the "blank" parts you're supposed to fill in in class and copy them to a word document...
It was a pretty easy class. He gives you what you need like problem sets, past exams, slides. The midterms and finals are similar to problem sets. Good teacher!
Tests become difficult because he's completely incapable of writing a question correctly.
Boring powerpoint slide notes, goes through material rather fast. Exams get tricky.
I personally don't like his teaching that much. I think it's rather confusing, but if you like powerpoint/fill in lecture slides you might like him. Study his old exams, and problem sets. then you should be okay.
I used to do poorly in the 100 series but because of Newhouse I learn a LOT more and did very well. Lecture is VERY clear if you print his slides before class. He answers all questions and makes sure we understand. His problem sets are consistent and are a LOT more helpful than studying off of old exams. Because of him I stopped going to Econ Tutor
BEST UCSD Econ Professor I ever had! Really clear and helpful! He answers emails fast too! Just print out his powerpoint slides before class and pay attention to his lecture! Exams are exactly what he taught and not lengthy. Also ur allowed to use one sheet of notes and curve is very generous!
Pretty good at explaining material clearly. Tests can be difficult, but you are allowed a sheet of notes. Definitely recommended.
Great professor I had him for 171 and 100c. Everything needed to get an A in the class is readily available and free. Highly Recommended. I'll be taking his course again next quarter.
Lecture sometimes getting boring but he is a great teacher. very straightforward and patient
Avoid him like the plague. He is a lecturer, not a professor, and he teaches as if he learned the majority of the material off other faculty and was given the opportunity to "try" and teach the material back to students. He provides old exams, but its not entirely helpful as he always compensates by making new exams even more difficult.
Professor Newhouse's lectures were pretty clear and easy to understand for the most part. Just print out the lecture notes, pay attention in class, do the problem sets and practice finals and you should do fine.
Best Econ professor. Very patient. Material is clear. As long as you go to class and do problem set, you will ace the class.
I had Professor Newhouse for 3 or 4 classes already. At first I wasn't used to his style and did pretty badly on my first midterm. Make sure you go over the in class examples as well as past exams. UNDERSTAND the questions, don't just memorize! Don't hesitate to ask for help, he is very patient at office hours and sincerely wants to help!
Newhouse is my favorite econ instructor. He is very clear and very good at explaining things. Most of all, he is very, very patient and helpful when you go to his office hours. If you are having trouble, make sure to go to him. GO TO HIS MIDTERMFINAL REVIEWS! As for his tests, make sure you go back to his past exams and practice them all.
I always look forward to professor Newhouse's lectures. Lecture halls always full till the last day of class. He doesn't ever make assumptions on prior knowledge which is great because we just need to work hard on understanding the materials he presents in order to do well. Memorable examples that stick, eg. UCSD parking lots example, econ171
Tough grader, gave only 1/10 partial credit if a number wrong. He can give very hard tests if he wants, and he did that in my class. His exams were not predictable... do fine on the practice exams meant nothing at all sometimes. He tested us on little things that he hardly mention in class. Don't skip his class and pay attention 100%. Good Luck!
He is a cold professor. He teaches fine and has pretty good lecture notes, but he seems rude when u ask him questions.
He moves at a very slow pace to ensure that all students can follow along, and offers many examples in class. His exams follow the exact format of previous exams, but can be perceived as difficult sometimes. He podcasts which makes attendance not necessary. Overall good professor!
Podcast alone is enough to rate him a 5!
Took game theory over summer session two with him. Has pre-filled out lecture notes that you can mark up. Grade determined by one midterm and one final. I wouldn't advise it, but considering he does podcast, you can skip class more than a couple times. Tests are similar to preceding quarters. If you want a good grade, go over the previous exams.
Prof Newhouse is amazing! He goes through the material slowly to ensure everyone understands. He posts lecture slides online before class so that you can fill them out during lecture. He is remarkably patient with his students should you take the time to approach him with questions. 10/10 would recommend and take him again
He's so straightforward and I like how he goes slow during lectures so that everyone is able to understand the material. His exams are just like his practice exams, so definitely study from the practice exams to get a feel of what to expect. He might be boring, but he is a great lecturer. Also, he podcasts in case you miss class or need a refresher
Lecture is extremely boring and slow. Exams (especially midterms) are testing how fast you can carry out very mechanical computation without making careless mistake under tight time constraint without a calculator, not how well you actually understand the materials.
Toughest grader. Not recommend. Deduct every possible point. Material is not hard, but you can not make a single calculation/careless mistake on exams.
He speaks very clearly and builds up his arguments slowly and logically, making lecture super easy to understand and making the material seem super easy. Then the test comes around and it's HARD. His podcasts are great and I like him overall but he sure did make me panic :)
The TOUGHEST grader ever, he gives less than 10% A, and less than 20% A-, which is ridiculous. An A+ in every other professor's class will most like be an A- in his class; and A in other professor's class ends up with a B+ in his class. Take him if and only if you are confident enough to be the top 5 students on every other Econ class in UCSD.
Since he doesn't provide solutions for past exams (except recent), it is possible to take off points in similar problems from past exams. If you are having a hard time to do a fast accurate calculation and graphing under pressure and 50 min exam, this is not the right class for you.
Generally good professor but a tough grader and lectures slower than anyone I have ever been taught by.
is just as useful as reading lecture slides. You don't necessarily need to go to class if you have other things to do that are more important. Cause you can study all the material on your own. Also, remember to double the speed of the podcasts since he talks really slowly, and you will find that this class is only half-quarter long.
Does not seem to be helpful. A person who mostly delivers information but not teach. You will feel the difference between professors once you take his classes.
If you expect to have a great learning experience, taking his class might not be a good idea. BUT, if you like self-study, you may just give it a try. Basically, the entire lecture remains the same no matter he comes or not. Slides tell you everything. Sometimes, questions are getting more complicated if you come to the office hour.
AVOID should be a good option.
Pros: can pass the class with podcasts, you don't need to go to class Cons: Tough Grader, even if you do all problem sets and practice tests, he will still give you hard tests.
He uses podcast, which is really great for students who study at home. Slides are clear. Exams are not easy, but straightforward and fair. He is generally a good teacher I think, though his average class GPA is not that high.
He gives terrible problem sets from textbook and solutions are really unclear. Also one of the midterm had some stupid mistake so the question was "graded based on interpretation". Don't take him.
Cold and condescending, doesn't seem to care much about students. Podcasts are great, but homework never reflects the tests or in-class examples.
This class should really be taught be a math teacher instead of an economist. He has podcasts which are good but he doesn't explain things very well. He regurgitates what's on the slides and does not go in depth. He's not very responsive to emails as well. Recommend to avoid him all together.
Taking this course during Fall 2020. The material is somewhat interesting and the professor is nice. However, exams are very challenging and we only have 30 min for 3 questions. The class average has been below 60% for all 3 exams so far. It is nice that he drops the lowest exam grade. Class is heavily curved. Professor and TA are tough graders.
With the pandemic going on and everyone is taking classes online, I understand that taking tests require more effort and flexibility due to circumstances outside of our control. But this professor seems to care more about student academic integrity and exam proctoring than his students. He and his TAs need learn what ASAP means, not 1 WEEK LATER!
Exam heavy class !! Professor basically reads off of lecture slides and talks really slow. Also inconsiderate of students amidst the pandemic.
Took his ECON 100A in summer session. Lectures are delivered live on Zoom and he and the TA recorded everything which is very considerate and helpful. Grades are based entirely on 1 midterm and 1 final so it's tough but acceptable for he gives EASY TEST! As long as you really work the materials through you should be fine.
Newhouse's lectures go at a relatively slow pace that allow you to better understand the material. Lectures are recorded, no graded homework, and our entire grade was based on two midterms and a final, though the exams were relatively short and straightforward and graded on a generous curve.
Professor Herbert is pretty caring about his student and his slide is super informative. And I donot allow any of u guys keep to talk the shit on him. Even though he seems reading the slides, but you can really learn a lot from them, and he also provides immediate example following each hard-understanding concept. Exam is fair and easy level!
50% midterm 50% final, so gotta do good for those to get good grades. The tests were representative of the course materials, with some tricky questions not appeared during lectures and ps, but as long as you understand the concept ur fine. Prof Newton is a very slow lecturer, so every time I watch the recording I turned on 2x speed. Huge curves
We only had 50-50 midterm-final in our grades. The midterm was easy but the final was a bit weird. The overall curve is good so it should take care of the rest. He speaks really slow so he can definitely save you a lot of time because 2.5-3x speed is pretty manageable while copying down notes from the slides.
The professor is only reading PPT in the course, and a lot of PPT knowledge is some concepts. He just read the concept once. You know, these concepts are poorly explained, you don't understand them. He doesn't give examples to help you understand
no more read
unambiguous lecturing, caring for students
Considering how hard I've heard 100A can be, definitely not that hard with Newhouse. He's clear and good with questions. Lectures are a bit slow, but I'm not complaining. Not the most *inspiring* of professors, but he's okay. Definitely prepared, the tests are a lot for the time you're given. But the curve is decent. Pronounces milk weird.
Very straightforward and unambiguous course. He explains the material clearly and there are a lot of resources outside of class (textbook, SI, discussions, etc.) for extra support. The exams were representative of what was covered in class. All around, great professor and would recommend.
I guess caring is also an important part of being a lecturer.
His lectures are extremely clear and easy to follow. If you work hard in this class by either going to his lectures or watching the recordings and doing the problem sets before the tests you should be fine. He allows cheat sheets, and provides past tests for reference which helps a lot. His class is very organized which makes it easy to succeed.
Two midterms and a final, two different ways the tests can be weighted and the higher of the two are picked. The class was pure power point reading. The material can get slightly daunting when the calculus kicks in with the different graphs as he does not explain in the best way. Just attend the lectures and prioritize studying out of class.
25% midterm 1 25% midterm 2 50% final. Midterm1 super easy. Midterm 2 kind of difficult. Final was in between. The curve was very nice. You can bring cheatsheets. Half of a page for midterms, 1 whole page for final.
Very straightforward lecturer. Dr. Newhouse provided an ample amount of material to help practice for his exams. First exam was fine, second more challenging, final was fair. Textbook wasn't required.
Prof. Newhouse is great. Graded only on 2 midterms and 1 final. Very straightforward class, slightly slow talker, but i think that helps note-takers. Gives many examples and many practice tests and allows a cheat sheet in midterm and final. Curve is great. if you go to class, make a good cheat sheet, its not hard to get an A.
Pros-Class very organized, Lectures podcasted, No hw and no readings/textbook Cons-Most boring professor I have ever had. DON'T take his morning classes, you will fall asleep but if you have to enroll, just watch the recordings. Posts incomplete slides so gotta take notes. Worst part-He doesn't provide his overall course grade thresholds.
Professor lost my final and simply failed me with no regards. DO NOT TAKE
The teaching style is condescending and unprofessional. Fails to provide a basic understanding of the subject matter, leaving students feeling unsupported and frustrated. A more approachable approach would greatly improve the learning experience.
Nice guy, but grade is dependent on midterms and final, thats it. I mean pretty hard to prepare for an exam when the practice exams he gives you DOESN'T HAVE AN ANSWER KEY. He said to just come to office hours but that doesn't do much because you don't know if the ones you think are right are actually right.
Newhouse is definitely a good professor. All exams can be considered a good reflection of his practice exam. A is easily obtained if u review practice exam and problem set carefully.
One of the chillest classes at UCSD. I think that Newhouse gives you all the info you need, and it's up to you to prep for the tests. The grade is only based on 2 midterms and a final. Problem sets are optional but helpful. Everything is podcasted.
Honestly, he was fine. The course itself (100A) was super hard and I think it would be hard no matter the professor. You are only graded on two midterms and a final. No homework or extra credit. He does curve nicely, though. Lectures are very boring and monotone. Good luck!!
Curve is insanely high, isn't necessary. He records all lectures and thoroughly explains everything albeit a bit slowly. Course itself was not hard as it only requires knowledge of partial and lagrangian, both of which he goes over. Recordings are also pretty hard to hear but not impossible.
he skims PPTs, offers only basic examples, while exams are far more complex with tough calculations, yet calculators aren't allowed. A 1/2page cheat sheet is allowed for the midterm, but he doesn't remind students sizes strictly, reporting violations to the integrity department. Grades 100% solely on exams, so consider other professors for better.
Final grade was entirely off of 2 midterms and a final. No homeworks or quizzes or anything like that. BUT he is a pretty slow speaker and gives boring lectures imo.
Fantastic professor, extremely caring when it comes to student learning and grades. lectures AND discussions are podcasted, review sessions are recorded, and you can pace yourself with the problem sets before the exam (just don't fall into the trap of not doing them because they aren't due). Good TA's and adjusts grade boundaries for each test.
Class is very structured and though exams are 100% of your grade they are curved. Problem sets can be a bit tedious to get through, but they go over a few problems in discussion and post solutions, and do help on exams. Would recommend taking his class if you enjoy learning at your own pace. Low stress threshold :)
Boring prof that doesn't know what he's talking about and just spends lectures (very slowly) reading off slides that he doesn't even fill in (ig to incentivize attendance). Exams are graded horribly and he will take off points even if you have the right answer. Lecture slides have nothing to do with exam material so do problem sets. Good curve tho.
Exam heavy class but allows cheat sheets. I think that his exams were very similar to the examples we covered in class and were kind of fair game if you study a lot. The course is quite mathy but that's not really his fault. Annoying thing is he doesn't fill in all the slides but he does podcast the lecture. He's nice too!
very straightforward and chill prof. final grade is made up of midterms and final score. he gives a good amount of practice problem sets and exams which r very similar to the actual exams. tbh ur grade just depends on how much u study on ur own for the exams!! overall I recommend :)
Really nice guy! I found his teaching style to be really good – he really took the time to try and build your intuition for core microecon concepts. Lots of past papers so plenty to practice when preparing for exams, which aren't that far off from what the past papers look like. Decent curve and goes through numerical examples in class thoroughly.
Newhouse explains economic concepts exceptionally well. Even as a newcomer, I was rarely confused. However, he is a tough grader. Exams were highly conceptual and unpredictable. I went to many office hours, attended every week's SI sessions, and finished all textbook questions, problem sets, and past exams. It's worth it, but be prepared to study.
His a great lecturer and explain stuffs well. But the course is too test heavy with 95% proportion of final grade for 2 midterms and a final. No curves! He do provide past papers for practice, but the ones appears in real exams may be different and harder. I'd say you need to practice more if you are new to economics.
Worse Econ professor ever. Only read through the slides, explanations are not clear at all, and using complex logic to explain the question when there's easy way to do that. He's not official professor only the lecturer, maybe that explains why he is not good at teaching.
prof newhouse designs the course to be straightforward & avoids overwhelming students + the TA's are well prepared. certainly one of the better professors in econ100 (compared to levkoff). econ 100c isn't curved much, though midterms are on a serious time crunch and impossible to complete - very rushed. definitely take econ 100a with him though.
The class is test heavy, but exams are similar to examples he covered in lectures. This is his second time teaching this course (because of changes in the econ 100 curriculum), but he includes lots of past exam papers that is useful as practice. Some problems on the problem sets are kinda tuff tho, and he doesn't post complete notes (only outline).
You would regret it! GUY DRINKS WATER EVERY MIN AND just reads off the slides. His TA are so picky with answers where you'll get stuff marked off even thought its right
Steer clear of the 100C section of the course for a while. The department is changing stuff on a whim, & TA's picked for this quarter were not good (lots of mistakes in grading). I was afraid to ask for a regrade I was entitled to, since you lose points if you get denied. No curves on exams with an unrealistic time limit. avoid if you can :(
He is ok. Gives a lot of practice exams that are somewhat similar to actual exams. If you put in effort and don't get behind you will do good in the class. Lectures are recorded and he talks hella slow so 2x speed is your best friend.
This professor is incredibly kind. He provides clear answers to questions and gives precise instructions without beating around the bushes. He even offered me helpful career advice. The TAs are also very friendly and caring. Grading is lenient, and I would definitely take his class again if given the opportunity. AMAZING 100A EXPERIENCE!!!!!!!
summer session so pretty fast…topic kinda hard but prof makes it easy to get an A if u put in any effort…lectures all podcasted, only showed up for exams…1 midterm 1 final weighted 30/70 or 40/60 respectively what makes ur grade higher…problem sets helpful I think but personally did not look at them…exams EXACTLY like the practice exams provided…
Toughest class in the econ series. I found the professor sometimes hard to understand and had to rewatch podcast often. Homework is somewhat similar to the exams and the practice exams give a lot of insight to what the midterm and final is going to look like, but other than that, not a lot of other material.
okay teacher, not amazing but very fair
He's okay but i'll never take his class again. You have to study A LOT. You really need a deep understanding of the concept and how to apply it to the questions. But if you study hard and stay on top of the material, you can get an A. (If a regrade request is denied, he takes off 1 point, which feels very unfair) Overview: doable but heavy.
This class is difficult, but its a normal level of difficulty for an upper div econ class. Prof is straightforward with what will be tested and the class curve, which makes it more manageable. He's also very slow in lectures which is nice, so you can easily watch lectures on 2x. Just exams (cheat sheets allowed) make up your grade.
Mouth breather. During the lecture recordings you can hear him uncomfortably breathing into the microphone. The entire grade is exams. He throws so much information at you, then moves on to a totally different topic.
ur grade in the class is basically determined by how hard you work. there's no homework and ur grade is only made up of two midterms and one final. u get a half sheet of paper (double-sided) for the midterms and a full sheet of paper for the final. the exams are exactly the same as the practice exams so just copy them onto ur cheat sheet :)
He's an interesting fella but his lectures aren't. Still, what's covered in the Psets is what's on the exam, and if you do the practice tests you'll probably be fine. No homework or mandatory attendance so the grade is wholly decided by two midterms and a final.
The class was pretty easy and he does a good job preparing you for exams, just watch the lectures and do the practice midterms & problem sets
Optional problem sets, grade determined by 2 midterms and a final. Easy if you pay attention and make sure you understand the practice exam questions. Would recommend watching lectures at faster speed online as professor talks slow.
Entire class is based on two midterms and a final so if you're a bad test taker don't take this. Reads off the slides so you have to teach yourself the material. He also just uploads the final grades to the transcript without announcing on canvas which was frustrating. If a regrade request is denied, he deducts 2 points from your score.
Boring lectures, so be prepared to study by yourself. Real exams are harder than the practice exams because he always gives you a few harder questions or tricky questions, which, especially for midterms, are hard to complete within 50 minutes. Final is not easy, but you will have plenty of time, so make sure you are very familiar with the material.
