Best Teacher in the B school
Interesting lecturer and I learned a lot, but his class is just too unstructured

He is not a nice man!

He is a terrible teacher. he does not care at all about his students and tries to make the class as impossible as he can. Try your hardest to get another teacher
No Comments
If you go to class you can ace his tests but you have to go to class and pay attention- sometimes he pulls the most mundane and random things out of his lecture and puts them on the tests.

Tries to embarrass students in class. Very bitter man with terrible sense of humor. I don't understand how anyone could enjoy his class.
I could care less if "discovered" your own mktg term. You should stick to writing books and not teaching students. Absolutely AWFUL!!
Unless you can devote huge amounts of time to this class, do not take a class taught by Rotfeld. He is mean, and I believe he takes joy in belittling students. I wonder why a know-it-all like himself has to teach classes at all. AVOID!
This man is very unreasonable and thinks his class is the only one you take every semester.
An answer from God himself wouldn't satisfy this man. He is rude, arrogant, and often downright mean. Tests are impossible. FIND SOMEONE ELSE!
whatever you can do to not take his class is worth it. The man treats everyone as idiots and REFUSES to give any advice or help during or in his office before the tests. His lecture material contradicts the book material and he makes no sense.
I think he is a good teacher. A bit hard, but he made me interested in Marketing. He takes a lot of examples from real life so it's very easy to see what's going on. Again, I'm just saying he's a good teacher, not a good person, nor he has an easy class
his class was very interesting because it was all advertising and fun to look at commercials and ads. for tests, no answer was correct. his standards are too high and he can't relate to the common student because he is too busy writing books and papers.
He lives for making students feel worthless. If you stick with it (go to ALL classes, study for ESSAY midterm and final, take all quizzes) you will get an A. I definately do not think it was worth it though. Drop if you don't like being called on everyday
It is a hard class and you need to go everyday but if you actually like to learn something instead of being spoon fed its a great class to take.
First rate jerk! He is rude, condescending, and enjoys making students feel inferior. It's nice to know that I actually paid to hear this man speak. Biggest waste of 50 minutes in my life!
Best class I have taken in Auburn. He is a very hard teacher, but you will learn so much. Go to his office as much as you can. Dont be scared to talk to him. Keep up with the reading and go to class EVERYDAY. Be prepared to answer questions in class.
This guy is the perfect example of a terrible teacher. He is a joke. He acts as if every student has worked at an advertising adgency for ten years. No answer is correct. AVOID this class if possible. His tests are impossible because no answer is correct. I was very displeased with this class.
He is not a nice person. He thinks he knows everything there is to know about advertising, yet he couldn't even last one minute in the real world. Being a teacher makes him feel he is important, so he is a jerk. His test are essay and your answer is only "right" if he thinks your essay ability is "correct."
I read all of the comments here before I took this elective, and I thought that those who rated him low were just slackers and didn't try. NO!I went to class and read the whole book and notes and still got a D in the class. He is a smart guy but in my opinion is no teacher. I wish I had heeded other's advice and not taken his class.
Worst professor in the world! He is condescending, arrogant, and contradicting! Refuses to help students and picks favorites. He is imature and I learned nothing in his class but how to regurgitate what comes from his arrogant mouth. DO NOT TAKE HIM!
He is a total fruitcake. He should not have an office at Auburn University, he should have a padded room at a mental institution. His test consists of very specific essay questions, about vague information, that only he could answer correctly. The most ridiculous, unnecessarily hard class I have EVER taken.
this guy is evil
The WORST teacher I have ever had at AU. Like another student here I WENT TO EVERY SINGLE CLASS and wrote down every single thing the weirdo said in class word for word and read the book and still made a D. This class is nothing but a joke with 2 full essay tests and trust me you will only pass if you kiss his ass and become "teacher's pet."
Rotfeld is easily the worst professor I had. I dropped his class after I wasted my first four weeks studying for his class non stop (and still failed the first test). I then took Abernethy, and my work was rewarded with an A. The fact that he is a first rate jerk makes his class even more unbearable. Never take a class taught by this "man".
Horrible
Being one of the "communication" students strugling through the marketing department is tough enough, i should have found a website like this when i was registering for classes. Due to Rotfeld's promotion strategy class i will graduate this semester, one class shy of a minor in marketing.
The man is the devil. I changed my major from marketing because of him. He is unfair, and unclear. As a graduate, I have had many many professors, and he BY FAR is the worst at Auburn!!
It is good to see people leave the marketing major. There are too many in the department already. Good riddins'!
this man is satan himself. I am positive that he is hitler's boyfriend. A semester of working my ass off for nothing. Never take this teacher
If you are no good, do not take marketing courses.
I am currently in his Consumer Behavior class. This guy is ridiculus. He is arrogant and cocky. It seems as though he tries to use the socratic method in his lectures by begging students to participate, only to question their comments to make himself look brilliant. He is god of everything marketing, i'm guessing. I don't have enough space.
Good god, where does one begin? Completly self-involved, cocky and obnoxious. His class is miserable and i swear this man resides in HELL when not teaching his horrific class. Avoid him at all costs, he is such an unpleasant teacher and really makes you want to punch him in his yellow-toothed mouth. Also, stuck in the 80's with his black jeans.
By far the worst teacher I have ever had. He's rude, a ****, and he thinks he is the smartest person to walk the planet. Also, I saw a couple **** comments on here, and I know it had to be him that wrote them, because I've heard him talk about this website before. Trust me he sucks... Avoid him at all cost.
He is a huge jerk, and is very arrogant. The class is very difficult, but there is some hope. You just have to but a ton of work into it.
Nothing makes Auburns Business school look worse than a teacher like Rotfeld.I have no idea how he still has a job.Actually I don't think he has ever had a real job besides teaching and writing lame articles. If you have to take him gook luck is all I can say.I like marketing but if I ever had to take him again I would switch majors. He's terrible.
He will make you work for your grade, but he is fair. Overall, a great teacher who is glad to help you. He even makes time in his office for you.
This guy, while he will piss you off to no end with his arrogance, is an excellent teacher because although I made a C in the class, I feel this is one of the few classes in the COB where I actually really learned the material. He's not for the students looking for easy marketing electives though.
He's definately a bit smug at times but overall he's a good teacher. Definately expects a lot out of you but the material is actually pretty interesting. Some of his lectures can be quite boring but some of them are the most intellectually stimulating I've had during my time here.
Run. Away.
Demands that you come to class prepared and expects everyone to have a brain. Kind of refreshing change.
Rotfeld is a really good teacher. I feel like I learned so much. He can be a little unclear in class sometimes, but if you go to his office he is always glad to help you. I'm pretty sure I should have gotten a B but he gave me an A.
Great professor! You have to be prepared for class ahead of time. He is by no means easy. However, I learned more in his two classes than any other classes taken at Auburn. Be prepared to work hard and actually LEARN something useful!
He is a very interesting prof to say the least. He will make you think about marketing in a different way than you ever have before. HOWEVER, he is not for the faint of heart nor is it a class you want to try to sleep your way through. Overall, a good but difficult teacher.
Run! If you take tests poorly or just dont study well, this is not the class for you. As a MKTG major I hated this class. The material was interesting and I feel i learned, however his lecture and the book always contridicted and you had to figure out which was correct for the test. Tests were hard. Studied for weeks. You MUST read, and go to class
I think people tend to rate him harsh. This class was not bad at all, as long as you properly prepare. You are not graded on attendance, although many questions do come from lecture alone. Just come, pay attention, read, and you will do fine. He is full of information so the class is quite interesting. 4 tests & 40% final. Got an A!
He is a terrible teacher. Do not take Promotional Strategy. His tests are all essay. Its not required so don't take it.
He's a very interesting guy. He has dry humor, which was good for me, but some find it annoying. Go to class! It's really the only way to pass. I would recommend him for students who want to learn.
He is not an easy teacher, but if you go to class prepared (aka - read the chapter before the lecture), you can understand what he is talking about. Therefore, your notes are better. Most of the test material comes from lecture notes. He's more than helpful if you go to him with a legitimate reason, not just to suck up. Class is very interesting!
honestly, he's the worst teacher i have ever had. His test are very unpredictable and worded tricky, his condescending comments to those who ask questions in class creates an awkward learning environment, he forces his political views down your throat, he has a HORRIBLE sense of humor, and theres a constant feeling that he's trying to make you fail
I went to class and studied A LOT. He did an adequate job of bringing in outside material to apply theoretical concepts, but he makes it difficult to take notes. Most of the tests are from the book; however, you probably won't be successful without going to class. I hate this man. He is self-involved and not interested in genuinely helping students
I really liked him. You HAVE to take him in the summer though. He is a lot more personable in the summer and not as cocky. He was one of my favorite teachers. Do not take him if you plan on skipping class. He will call you out. Summer classes were very entertaining. Fall & Spring he is out to prove that he is in charge. (Bigger Audience!)
Rotfeld is an awful man. He is extremely rude and has a huge ego. His class is pretty difficult - not many people do well in it. He seems to not even want students to succeed or do well. I feel as if every test is trying to trick me. I would stay away if it's possible. PS He has a horrible reputation (for good reason!)
Worst teacher in the world. Notes contradict the book but he questions his lectures. He has a TERRIBLE attitude and enjoys being rude. Unless ur a mktg major, get out. He is a waste of life on the planet, seriously. If you have to, take it and over study for everything...and avoid him if possible. It can be done, just miserable.
RUN and GET OUT while you still have a good GPA. A "C" should be attainable, and D sounds like the norm... Most people i talked to were retaking the class because it was mandatory to graduate. DONT take unless you have to! He makes it impossible to take notes, he's rude and has a HUGE ego. NOT A GOOD CLASS, you only learned HIS view of mktg.
The third time's a charm. As he reads this, Hey Herb. The tests floating around campus can help, but won't get you a passing grade without going to class to absorbe The Daily Show and The Colbert Report. They ARE relevant. He actually makes other professors look bad by being on top of his game. Your welcome in advance for a, rare, good review!
No good, and stay away. Has nothing to due with CB, only personal opinions.
Attending class is a must. This is where most of his test questions come from. And let's be honest, those that have to repeat the class/say they hate it so much, obviously didn't go and put in effort. This class is challenging but if you put in the work, it is very interesting and applicable to the real world. Get to know him!
Yes, in class he's a complete ass. But he's not as bad as people say. He's a lot cooler one on one, so just ask if you need help. Definitely go to class. Pay attention to everything he says or does, including Daily Show. First day of class, you should talk to the people around you and form a study group, pool resources, makes it a lot easier.
He is a the most cocky teacher I've ever had, and even being on his good side I still thought he was a complete jerk. I never missed class and I was also prepared and participated. I learned a lot and came out with a B in both, but I hated him! He also wouldn't let me see my Promotion Final exam after he graded it which is ridiculous and unfair!
Consumer Behavior was the hardest class I ever had at Auburn. Re-read the book left and right, make sure you NEVER miss a class. Re-read the notes and correlate its importance with the book material. To NOT underestimate this class or you will fail it. Its my hardest class last semester and its extremely challenging. STUDY!!! all the time
How to pass: 1. Go to every class. 2. Read the book, but look at it skeptically. He directly disputes many things in the text. 3. Write down everything he says. 4. Go to his office. 5. Do not underestimate this class-he will fail you without thinking twice. Overall, difficult guy, but he just wants to see that you care and learn something useful.
Very difficult class. You cannot afford to miss even 1 class. There is little structure to this course; you have to relate what he says to the concepts in the book without any clear correlation. Essays come from notes, fill ins from notes/ book and multiple choice mostly from book. You have to take this class and it's miserable but can be done : (
This class is not as bad as consumer behavior but takes as much effort. Hope that he gives a lot of quizzes because you will need extras to build up your points. His essay questions are very precise and he is looking for something very specific in his answers. Not my favorite teacher!
He takes easy material and complicates it just for the sake of looking intellectual. You'll work extremely hard to get a C in this class. I saw the grade distributions from last semester and it wasn't pretty. Easily the worst teacher I've had in Auburn.
He is a good professor and the class is very interesting. He unfortunately makes the tests so that having knowing the material doesn't mean that you will get a good grade. In my opinion, it is arrogant of him to only assign readings he is either the writer of or featured in. He is smart though and you will learn a lot.
He is one of the better professors at AU.His class isn't is hard as people say it is.You just need to do the readings and pay attention in class and take notes on all of the random things he says in class because they will be on the test.If you are having trouble with notes or anything,I suggest reading his book "Adventures in Misplaced Marketing"
Look, anyone who has major problems with this guy just doesn't put in the effort. I'd recommend you download a recorder app and record every lecture because that's where most of the test material comes from. If you're a half-ass kinda student just drop his class. Otherwise, a B is easily achievable.
His class is no where near as difficult as everyone says. I made a B with a regular amount of effort. The only problem I had with this class is he is not really a nice guy. He truly thinks all of his students are idiots and stereotypes them. He gets pretty rude about it which makes class irritating.
He's horrible and likes to see you fail, but the class isn't impossible. You have to go to class and write down every word he says. Must objectively read the text. Go to his office hours. Dont let him see you shed tears, he likes that. Read every biased article he "recommends" and prepare for every class. Form study groups and you'll survive
This class requires all kind of readings, articles, etc. and he is probably the less helpful person I have encountered. Smart guy though, definitly knows his stuff but good luck trying to get help if you don't. I recommened that if this is an elective, drop it. If this course is required, im sorry...
Dr. Rotfeld is my favorite professor I have had at Auburn. I am taking him again next semester during my final semester at Auburn. If you want an easy slacker class, don't take him, but if you want to be challenged and to learn more real world information than all of your other classes combined, this is the class for you.
Good professor who knows his stuff. But if you don't need this class, don't take him. His exams are essay-form that is more subjective then anything
extremely hard professor. knows his stuff but DON'T TAKE HIM if you don't have to. worst class in auburn!
He was the best TEACHER I have ever had at Auburn. He challenges students, provides incredible perspective, and if you are willing to put in the work, provides you with great understanding of the subject. I made an A, but it was the hardest and most fulfilling grade I ever got. Go to class, read, and take note of key facts given in class.
He thinks he is funny but in reality, he is just a rude, abrasive person. He thinks he is smart, and is to a degree, but if you aren't on his level, you will be chastised. His class makes no sense, just like his emails. I would avoid at all costs. Dr. Rotfeld is one of those people that about .05% of the people on Earth can relate to.
This was my favorite class I have taken in the Marketing dept. I had over a 100% going into the test and it made me furious when so many people were talking about how hard he was. If you actually do the readings (actually an interesting book) and go to class then you'll be fine
Don't take him. Advertising could be interesting but he makes it absolutely miserable.
I know nothing and that is what I know after completing my degree at Auburn..
His lectures are informative but his grading scale is so poorly put together. Do not take unless it is mandatory
Rotfeld was the worst teacher I had at auburn. I took Advertising (mk 4320). To keep it nice, don't bother going to his office because he provides no help, just rants about other topics and never can clearly tell you how to do better. He could not explain how to do better on tests. He's no help and a terrible explainer of topics
Rotfeld is the most baffling teacher I've had at Auburn. He went to law school and he shows it whenever you have a tough question, especially about why your grade is so low. He can talk around a subject to dumbfound you without ever answering your question. At no point did my grade reflect my confidence in my knowledge of the course information.
If you do all the reading, you will pass. End of story. His quizzes are 100% from the book. His lectures serve more as a glue to bring the main ideas of the reading into real life thinking. His tests will be on what he says in lecture. The quizzes should be easy cushion points- assuming you read. No reading- no prayer.
By far the WORST teacher that I have ever had. I always made A's and a few B's in college. His class is the only C I have ever received, but I was so happy to make it out of that class with a C. My advice? Make him know your name. I failed every test but somehow made it out with a C.
Rotfeld is an interesting guy. He is tough, often times for lack of a reason, but is a professor that will make sure you leave the class knowing how to think critically. Every student should have a professor like this at least once, but he makes Advertising harder than it's worth at least as an elective. Just don't be stupid in his class.
He will extinguish the light of your life if you don't know the terminology like the back of your hand. There are over 1000 pages of reading that you will need to do to succeed in this class. It's time-consuming, but the material itself isn't very difficult. Go to class, the final can replace lower test grades. He can be rude, but that's life.
Professor Rotfeld is hands down one of my top two professors ever at AU. He teaches you to think, literally and critically. You won't be given a passing grade in this class; you must earn it. He teaches students the invaluable life lesson of hard work and participation. I hope to have him again before I graduate. Best money ever spent on tuition.
Don't Take Any Class that is taught by Rotfeld. Worst Professor at Auburn. If you like to be miserable, he is the one for you.
Never made a RMP review before - this guy is so bad I had to. I've had tough teachers before. I can respect that. But Rotfeld's grading criteria aren't "tough" they're arbitrary. Everyone I know spends hours on the homework and gets their questions counted off for no reason. All he teaches are his opinions and meme videos. Class is not worth it.
I have taken both Misplaced Marketing and Advertising with Professor Rotfeld. He is a tough teacher, but wants to see his students succeed. His class is set up to prepare you for real life. With that being said, if you don't go to class and read you will fail. His classes were the most beneficial classes I have taken at Auburn.
I've taken both of Rotfeld's classes and I will admit they are not easy, but they are so much more beneficial than just about any other class you'll take at Auburn. You really have to think critically and make connections across the lectures and readings to do well. Keep up with readings, lecture notes, and supplemental emails and you'll be fine.
Dr. Rotfeld is honestly the best professor I've had at Auburn! He is very knowledgeable on his subjects and he really cares for his students. With that being said, you can't slack off in this class! You must come to class and do ALL of the work. He does essay exams, but if you know the material, they're a walk in the park. Highly recommend!
Dr. Rotfeld is honestly the best professor I've had at Auburn! You must work to get a good grade, but he rewards those that he sees making an effort in class. His classes are completely lecture and about critical thinking. His tests are essay tests, but if you know the material, it will be very easy. Highly recommend!
Hardest class I have ever taken. His lectures are all over the place and you basically have to find all the material in the book, which is another challenge within itself. Pop quizzes are very common and sometimes tricky. Tests are essay format. Three questions per test, 10 points each. The only plus is you call tell he cares about his students.
By far the best teacher I've had at Auburn. After taking his class I literally became more aware of the world around me and genuinely learned so much about real life situations than any other class I have taken. Put in the time to meet with your class mates for homework assignments and test reviews. Office hours are a must too.
This was my favorite professor at Auburn and my favorite class I took as well. His lectures are both educational and enjoyable, with a mixture of videos and real-world examples (not just reading slides!). You'll have to work in this class, but it's worth it. Read, do the homework, come to class, visit him in his office if you have questions.
Rotfeld is no good as a professor, really awful that hes the only Advertising teacher at Auburn. I highly recommend you take other marketing electives. unnecessarily hard class. Trust me, do not take.
Put my all in to this class to receive a below average grade. Rotfeld isnt that bad of a teacher and seems to be knowledgeable about advertising but then again there is nothing to grade him against. I would recommend alternatives before choosing Rotfeld to teach you.
Would not recommend to a single person. Take someone else.
Rotfeld doesn't answer questions. He beats around the bush until you are more confused than before you asked it.
Do not under any circumstances sign up to take Rotfeld. Will make your life miserable, not worth it, take another marketing elective.
Take a diffrent Professor. You will have to read over 1000 pages of reading. This class has nothing to do with reason and everything to do with Rotfelds opinion.
This guy has to be the worst professor on earth. He seriously will babble about nothing and everything with very little relevance to the subject matter. This guy has absolutely no ability to think clearly. Avoid him at all costs. He also is quick to dismiss all criticism for his terrible teaching style as students not being smart enough.
Herb's lectures literally have nothing to do with the test. One class we began by deducing whether or not Car A or Car B was going faster. Wild stuff
This was the hardest class I've taken at Auburn so far. It was a lot of work, but maybe if all college classes were like this I'd feel like my money is being well spent. If you spend hours on each homework assignment you might still fail the tests, but if you can pass the final you'll pass the class.
This dude literally writes down when you get up to use the bathroom, this should not be allowed. Take someone else, unless you are willing to slave for a class you will fail.
I was warned going into this class & I wish I would've actually taken these warnings seriously. AWFUL. 3 question open ended test questions. A weird point based grading system. Doesn't believe in canvas. Doesn't tell you your grade until 1 week before the final. Pop quizzes on the reading every week. Says attendance doesn't matter, does matter!!!!
Ok he is super tough but if you actually have an interest in advertising you will LOVE this class. Doesn't use Canvas sucks but I thought I had a D based on my quizzes and came out with a B. Seem interested in class and take hardcore notes - study them. You might hate him throughout the year but once it was over I realized I wanna go into advertisi
Dr. Rotfeld is hands down the best professor I've had in college. I found his lectures interesting and he slows/speeds up the material depending on how well the class understands it. He makes sure you really know the material and that carries into his test which are three easy questions almost always relating to in class discussions. Pay attention.
Talks like he wrote the bible. Class is basically technicalities and terms of advertising. Takes feedback personally, his grading scale is out of 200 doesnt use canvas and doesnt show grades until the final.
