If there is one teacher at NVCC to AVOID, this is the One.Mr. Smith does NOT teach about Jazz, but about the hatred he has for whites from his bitter life experiences. He pits students of different races against each other, and harrasses those who refuse.

Herb is different. From Memphis Tenn. for 60+ years, he *is* the stuff of jazz. Jazz is not a toy, he knows it. Should be in Harlem. Past students include celebrities as D'pollo, of the Apollo; arrangement man for the Commodores, etc. Tough man, but warm and funny. It takes character to be with him.

Beyond that, don't bother arguing with him. If you know the first few chapters and can put up with his tangents the class is one of the easiest you can take.

He wants you to challenge and find yourself which I respect. That said, he was a waste of my time. he just talks and repeats on and on about how europeans/america/white people ruined everything and play music. you learn on your own. not hard to earn a decent grade easy, just show up and work on other classes when you get tired of his rambling

Professor Smith in my opinion doesn't know how to teach students at all. In class, he would just show us a ton of YouTube videos about music, and give random rants about how America is a lie. He didn't give students a syllabus at all, so there is no clear grading criteria. There is a vocab quiz, midterm, 2 take-home tests, and a final. Avoid him.

Skip class? You won't pass.

He is okay tbh. I dont even know how I ended up with an A when I got C's on the tests. 2 are take home and 2 are in class. He doesn't really teach he shows random youtube videos and complains about america a lot. He is funny and tries to get everyone out their comfort zone by picking on them randomly in class. Don't get the textbook.

All he did was ramble about morality or political issues every class. Each class was uncomfortable but not in the way that stimulates knowledge or growth. He just picked on students the whole class. Since having him, I have used ratemyprofessor and it made a world of difference. If you want to pass the final, read the textbook. He doesnt teach it.

Professor Smith is by far one of the most memorable professors I have had throughout my college career. His teaching style is not for everyone, only for those who can appreciate deep convos. So if you are sensitive and offended by truth, Professor Smith is not for you. But ya hes a great Professor. I DEFINITELY RECOMMEND.

THE BEST! Those who complain about his "rants" completely miss the point. They have a colonizer/exploitation mentality. Prof Smith tries to change that mentality by teaching WHY the music exists and challenging us to understand the cultural and historical context of the music. Before attempting to play Jazz, you must respect it and the culture.
