The boring hack is running for state senate

talks in econ. lingo, doesn't care about the students
could care less about students, boring and confusing
Covers concepts clearly. Arrogant and rude in person.
he made the class very boring and didnt seem to care about students
Professor unwilling to help students outside of class. Boring, pompous...
never take class from him, very arrogant and rude, avoid at all costs
very boring and unwilling to help students at all, very poor at his job, a jerk

Arrogant and rude, but he definately knows his sh*t when it comes to Econ....not like he'd help you out if you had a question though...
I can't imagine this simple course being taught much harder.
Rambling, opinionated (extreme left wing economics) and unhelpful. Further, he is getting worse as the years pass--more animosity builds between himself and his pupils.
Was not impressed with this guy. And this is just how I feel, but I think he needs to rethink on how to instruct this introductory economics class. He does know his stuff when it comes to it, but almost too much for this kind of class.
A real **** when it comes to teaching this class...eventually had him sign a drop slip at which time he threw my pen back at me.
I realize econ is going to be boring no matter what, but this guy makes it a thousand times worse. He rambles on and on, while the TA can explain his 3 hour lectures in 40 minutes. He's a waste of time; avoid at all costs
how can they let this man teach?!!!!

ended up screwing me over I asked for his help. smart guy but not good when it comes to helping out or getting something done. bad with deadlines
God this teacher sucked... tests were hard, and he tought the material terribly. gotta agree with previous reviewer who said 'how can they let this guy teach'
First day of class, we are all sitting there, he gives us material that translates to 3 PAGES of notes, and says something to the extent of "I have been teaching for 13 years, which means I'm good and you should do everything I say, the exact way I s
i dont know how i pulled off a decent grade when i never knew what he was talking about.

In my opinion, this professor is horrible at teaching, and I really think he knows it. In my experience, he would never help with anything when I would ask him... and not only that, but he once switched our class to a saturday morning because he couldn't make it.
God, this guy was a bad teacher. Im lucky i pulled off a C+. This guy should never teach, much less at the university level.
He is in my book the most worthless teacher. He doesnt explain anything the simple way. He never turns around, he just writes on the chalkboard. I try to stay awake but there is no point because it is easier to just read it out of the book. So why is he still here? And how come everyone is failing?
Why is this man still teaching?! I'm only half way through his class, I'll be amazed if I get a c. He is very unclear, all he does is write on the board and those chicken scratches don't make sense either, avoid him at all costs!
Quirmbach is the worst Econ teacher here! His lectures are boring & confusing. He attempts to add a fun with bad jokes, which always fail. His "functions" are confusing, and his abbreviations are illegable. The tests are hard, and over material not covered in book or lecture.Look elsewhere to learn!

this guy sucks real bad, made us maked up a lecture (that he missed) on a saturday morning during a home football game!!!!!
This guy is terrible!!
He is a horrible teacher. He was very rude to the people in my class. Most the time half of the class either fell asleep or left half way through. Tests were usually pretty hard too. Don't expect to get any help from him on anything.
He talked for the first 30 minutes of a test period about not cheating, then when I couldn't finish, he told me to accept my failures. He is a big time jerk
By far the most terrible and disrespectful teacher I have ever had. If you get assigned to him, please drop the class IMMEDIATELY!!!!
He is the worst teacher that I have ever had. He constantly changes his mind on different equations and variables!
He is absoultely the worst teacher in the econ department, his lectures don't tie into the homeworks, he explains lectures in the MOST complicated ways, he boring,...etc. DO NOT TAKE HIM!

I cant believe this guys ratings, he is the easiest professor I have ever had period!!! I suppose that all the ratings come from all the kids that **** about how hard all their classes are. He is easy, easy, easy.
I don't know what to say. I disliked his class so much cuz he took so long to teach the material and went off on tangents and took forever to get everything taught, I just gave up going. He also teaches so much more stuff than other profs. argh
He knows his stuff, but you must go to class everyday. Missing this class even once sets you back a ton because he goes moderately quickly through the material. Also, study the homework for the tests and ask the TAs for help. Quirmbach didn't really have time to talk to me ever.
Terrible teacher - knew information, but wasn't in the right to try to teach....he should go back to yale or harvard and do something else with his wasted life
easiness was a 2 because i got a C in the class, but that was considering i never went to class. I did get almost perfects on all the homework assignments, and i missed almost half the quizzes. EASY TO GET A C
HE is a very knowledgable person, knows econ but...the worst of teachers..he should know that not everyone is harvard type material and he should try to teach material in an easier manner. dont study for the class...ull get a C whatever u do.
i think he is a good techer, and he knows his stuff well. I got an A- in his class. I think if you go to class and study for the test, this class won't be bad at all. He just expects students to work.
He is a good teacher. He explains things very well in class. Study his notes and skim through the book, and you will do well in the class.
Refused to help me when i did not understand class. also did this wiht 2 other students i know of. Tried to pass work and help sessions off on forgein TA. Comes off as arrogent and pompus. Stay awat from at all costs.
An absolute prick... he wanted to make up a class on a saturday, during ISU's family weekend, cause he decided not to come.... absolutely ridicolous.
This professor knows his material, but unfortunately does not know how to teach it to students in an effective way. He is a very knowledgeable man, but if one does not have any previous experience with Econ, don't take him as a first year professor.

I didnt have a problem, and thats saying alot.
Yuck!.....my advisor found out that he was my professor and said, "Oh dear, i'm so sorry"
Arrogant and pompous was right on target. Knows his subject but more interested in Ames political scene and furthering his status at ISU than actually educating students. Not helpful, condescending, and rude. Avoid this man unless you are an econ major and want to kiss his you know what-that is the only way I can see him being of any use. He has a mean case of "no-friends-in-high-school-so-I'm-gonna-take-it-out-on-everyone-I-meet" syndrome. TA's were more helpful. PS-nice hats.
he is a good teacher, the problem and homework is easy, the exam is not that hard if you understand and come to class
hard to keep awake in his class, the exam is very hard
quirmbach is the****tiest teacher i've ever had, i'll admit that econ is not my favorite subject, but just to prove how bad he is... i took econ 102 at DMACC and got an A- i'm taking it here with this teacher and i'm pretty sure i'm close to failing.. if you find out you have quirmbach, TRANSFER ASAP!!!! don't say you weren't warned
He is a horrible professor. He always assumes that everyone has all the knowledge he has in his head. Does not give real world examples or examples of problems to fit into his equations.
Terrible. great fashion sense too..... I particularly liked the bike helmet with the lights and rearview mirror.
Class is okay...at first I thought that he was a good prof. b/c he made it easy to understand and moved fairly slowly, but when the exam came all most all of his questions were trick questions! I knew the material very well but ended up with a C+ on the first exam! Even TA's thought he had horrible teaching methods!
Lecture is boring, tests are extremely hard for a one hundred level class...really no reason at all in going to class except for the fact that he throws out rediculous quizzes from time to time. My TA and the other people in class were the only people I learned from. If you can avoid it don't take it with him.
Tests are horrible, aviod taking his classes!
You expect way too much
This is easily the worst professor at the university. Not only does he simply go on a rant and shove a bunch of completely off-the-wall equasions, all he does is trick quest you on tests with like 6 mult choice options. Then after he feels like he's brainwashed you, he talks about being a 'politician' in story county (D). EVERYONE HATES HIM.

this is the dumbest class ever! he is the worst prof. ever. half the time he doesnt even talk about econ! and he needs to get a new hair cut. the comb-over went out a long time ago!!!!!!! dont take with him!
the definition of a tool. stay far, far away from classes taught by him.
This guy is a brilliant economist, but definitely doesn't know how to dumb down material -- that's even apparent in a 500-level class. So undergrads, especially those who don't like math, you should probably stay away. But with 501, if you like the subject matter, it will be interesting and challenging.
He is the worst teacher ever! If you want to fail than he is your man! His class is so hard. I never missed a class and failed.
He is miserable, he needs to be kicked out, I knew about 15 people in class and not one of us passed...DON'T TAKE IT WITH HIM!!
He is just plain hard!
BORING!
the dumbasss spends more time talking about politics than he does teaching the course! I did not join this course to learn about how stupid Bush is, tells us something we don't already know like stuff related to your damn class! other than his politics ****, he is an easy prof.
The prof. spent too much time on the politics and doesn't teach well in the second half of the semester. The final exam is too tricky and so difficult. He never gave us any exercise or hint about the problems in the final in the class. The score I got is the worst score I ever had before. I got all my HWs full score and mid-term exam A+, and got B
It's good to see his rating dropped from 1.8 to 1.6 since I had him. This Socialist first goes off on a rant with equations. Once he "shows" you the little material there is, he tries brainwashing you into his political views (he's a state senator because his district is 60% trailer park on the west side of Ames). Got an A once I stopped studying
Go to class, pay attention, and do the homework.
USELESS AS A TEACHER. HE"S IN HIS OWN WORLD AND DOESN"T UNDERSTAND THAT NOT ALL OF HIS STUDENTS ARE ECONOMIC GEEKS.
I dont feel like i am a hater at all but this guy really doesnt care about anyone he really just likes to hear himself talk about his life, and only his views.
EZ class. Pathetic excuse for an instructor. More interested in getting my vote than in my education. This is what happens when wackos get tenure.
This guy is ridiculous has no respect for the students, TA's, and fellow professors. His text are next to impossible to do well on the only good thing is that he has a hell of a curve. my scores were 68 and 60 out of 100 and 130 out of200 and i got a B+ for the class. Stay as far away from herman!!!
One of the worst teachers i have ever met. way over qualified for is job. we hear more about the "fireworks display" (which we heard about 7 times (i was counting)) than actual teaching. if you get stuck in this class, drop it.
I highly suggest finding a different professor if you end up in this class. He was an arrogant prick. Tests were extremely difficult and tricky. I'm a "A" student, and I had to hire a tutor. However, If you can stick it out, he does have a decent curve.
This teacher is a pompous jerk. He talks more about how great he is than he does teach. From the first class I could tell we would not get along because football players couldn't miss class for games. I dropped as soon as I could.
Flat out horrible teacher. Never stayed on topic, once talked about movies for a half hour. Enjoys saying the word "alright" once counted how many times he said "alright" and he easily surpassed 60, alright?
This guy is the WORST teacher I have ever had in my entire life!!! I've tried talking with him.. It's HIS WAY -or- the HIGHWAY!! I had TWO tutors.. both didn't understand his method of teaching. Even my couselor advise me to DROP!! Don't step foot in his class. You will hate it. WORST experience ever!! He totally SUCKS!!
worst professor ever. doesn't teach the same way as any other teacher so you cannot get help from other students or tutors
Worst prof I've had. But...If you can take teach yourself, the curve is huge. 71's went up to 94's.
I dont know how this guy is even a teacher. I hope he reads this site and realizes how much he sucks. I am in engineering and had more trouble with this class than any other class I have taken. He is too stupid to realize that nobody cares about economics and that his class is supposed to be a joke. Worst teacher of all time.
Off in his own little world, barely actually teaches. Probably makes no sense because he is a senator, they never do.
It's almost as if he refuses to teach. He's late quite often, is almost never at his required office hours, and has the strange ability to render even the simplest concept incomprehensible.
Worst professor ive ever had. I never have any idea what is going on in class- even if you TRY to pay attention. The class is close to impossible
Horrible.....tests were extremely hard. you have to go to class because he has unannounced quizzes and writes all notes on the blackboard....and still the tests were hard. The only good thing that i can say about this class is that it is curved A LOT!!! I wouldn't want him as a prof. ever again....
A true waste of my time and money. He does not explain equations at all and rushes very fast. He also tries teaching politics in the class because he is a liberal. He signed me and friend up with a TA that is as useless as he is. She doesnt know how to speak fluent English. If you take econ, make sure you are not with him. If you are, God Bless.
It was supposed to be an econ class but it turned out to be more about politics (he is a political figure) than econ. He talks and uses the chalkboard. Very old school.
Horrible professor. Goes off on rants all the time. Uses algebra way too much for an Econ 101 class. A 100 level class should not be this difficult and it the hardest class I've ever had. And I'm a computer geek. DO NOT take Econ with him.
He's really not that bad. If you keep up on the reading, he's not hard to follow. He's very pompous, arrogant, and kind of clueless. If you are not a liberal, be prepared to feel queasy and uncomfortable in some of his lectures (yes he is THAT liberal). Other than that, not too bad.
He is AWFUL! Do NOT take him as a teacher. He goes on rants about politics, he does not help you, he barely uses the book. You are required to go to every class because he does pop quizzes and he is rude. His exams are extremely hard.
He is a horritble professor! Hard to follow and gets off topic VERY easily (as if the class isn't hard enough to follow already!) He speeds through material as if he expects you to know it. The only life saver in the class is that it's graded on a curve.
Awful! I have never had a class that has made me actually want to cry! The tests are impossibly hard no matter how much you study. His terms and the books terms are inconsistent and some terms are so outdated you can't find them on the internet. He adds a discussion time on the first day of class the schedules don't show. Drop this class fast!
He talks half the hour rambling about information that is either common sense or is nothing related to the topic. His tests are super hard and multiple choice, the only thing that helps is he gives problem sets. He has so many equations that it's hard to keep them straight. Avoid instructor if possible, but the TA's are good.
A horrible professor. His tests are really hard & he doesn't do a good job following the book. DO NOT take Econ from this professor. I have heard from many students on campus that it was a bad decision for me to take Econ 101 with Quirmbach. Worst professor I've ever seen.
I was so disappointed with this professor and he was very disrespectful towards me when I asked questions after class. Do NOT take this class. I cried so much over it. Tests are extremely hard, he ABSOLUTELY DOES NOT follow the textbook. If you are in this class, drop it now and switch professors, you'll be glad you did. No one can be worse than him
Worst professor I ever had. Doesn't explain things very well, yet has very difficult tests.
Please do NOT take class with this guy, trust me. I have to take econ 101 all over again because he was a bad professor. There are no notes online so you have to go to class and write down all the notes. He's very hard to follow and most of the stuff he says aren't relevant. Near impossible test. Just don't.
He's a horrible teacher. Do not take it with this guy. His lectures make no sense and are soooo boring.
Horrible teacher. Impossible to follow
Flat out not good, if you have to option choose a different teacher.
If you get him as a teacher, be sure to go to class everyday. There is a huge curve so the class really isn't too hard, but you must pay attention in lecture and do all practice exams. I would try switching to another professor if possible.
This guy is the WORST teacher ever. If you want a cocky, terrible teacher than this is the guy for you! If not get the heck out of this class as fast as you can or you will regret it.
Classes gets very boring and sometimes off topic. Not very engaging. The only good thing is there' NO HOMEWORK AND HUGE CURVE. I thought i was going pass the class with a C but the final curve got me a B+. Also make sure to go to Econ helo room for your homework packets. THey basically give you the answer and show you how to do it.
No assignments, teaches completely separate from the book, you miss class you're going to miss a lot, ton of reading, random quizzes, leads off topic a lot.
This is the worst professor I have ever had. This is an intro class and its one of the hardest I've ever taken because of the prof. I failed the first exam because it's so horrible. Quirmback has no interest in helping us learn, and he uses way to many equations without explaining them. Unless you enjoy teaching yourself, I suggest a diff teacher.
One of the worst professors I've had. He loves getting off topic so you'll spend and hour out of the hour and a half class talking about something completely irrelevant to the course. A lot of the time you end up leaving more confused than you were before.
Super long lectures and signs you up for a friday discussion group that does not appear your schedule. The TA I had for the discussion group was worthless and had no idea what he was talking about. DON'T TAKE THIS CLASS WITH THIS PROFESSOR.
Lectures get to be really long and boring. Very abstract and doesn't use many real-life examples. 3 tests and all are REALLY hard. Curve is large at like 82A but tough to get that. Final exam is 40% of grade. Not clear at all about how your final grade works between curving and extra credit.
Do not take this class with him! Doesn't care about his students and his lectures don't even make sense. Tests are insanely hard.
DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS WITH HIM! Worst professor I have ever had and when you go in for office hours he is no help. Has the TAs run reviews but they also are not very helpful. For your own sanity and your GPA take this class with ANY OTHER PROFESSOR!!!!
This class is just awful. Professor is impossible to follow along with, whether he is on topic or not, and the tests are incredibly hard.
Worst teacher I have ever had in my life.
Interesting to listen to in lecture, but when it comes to the tests they don't make much sense. Lectures are general but exams are specific and hard. He also does not use blackboard, instead he has his own class website. Also puts you in a graded but not mandatory discussion group on Fridays that won't appear when you're making your schedule.
Very bad professor. Test are hard and are not even close to what the book says .Dropped class after first test, took the same class in the summer at a local community college and got an A.
He doesn't explain things well, and only uses variables in his calculations. He never gives examples of problems using actual numbers. You need the book to do the few homework assignments because your lecture notes won't be very helpful.
DON'T TAKE THIS WITH QUIRMBACH. I'm not exaggerating at all right now. This is the only class that makes me want to pull my hair out because I understand what he says in lecture, but then I get to the test and nothing makes sense. Save yourself some time and your grade and take econ with a different professor
This guy... I can honestly say he is one of the funniest professors I've ever had, his snarky humor left me laughing far after class ended. As for the lectures, they were throughly engaging. His use of equations and complex algebra in simple economics questions really helped to strengthen my understanding. Not much more to say. Great guy.
Hardest class I have ever taken. He does not give examples on how to use the equations. He brings a huge stack of paper with his notes on them to class and just puts it on the board. It is so confusing. Tests are very hard.
The hardest class of my first semester at ISU. His lectures consist of him rattling off equation after equation without any example as to how to use it on the test. He seems to know his stuff, but doesn't know how to teach it to a 100 level class full of students that aren't studying economics. All in all he is just not a good teacher.
WAY over qualified for his job! just lectures the whole time about stuff that won't relate to the test. The book is really well written but also doesn't cover everything on the tests, don't worry about reading it beyond the first few chapters. Go over the homework with wikipedia and you will do well on the test. Manditory friday classes suck.
If you have the opportunity to take it with some one else, DO. If you're struggling go to the Econ help room or utilize your TA. He moves fast and doesn't relate much to real world so it's hard to comprehend and remember. Classes get long and hard to pay attention to. DOESN'T USE BLACKBOARD. You don't know what your grade is almost the whole time.
One of the hardest classes I've ever taken. An awful way to start the first semester. Very overqualified for the job, making the 100 level class for non-econ majors very difficult. Major curve to help you. The three tests I took including the final resulted in a D,F,F ending up with a C+ for the class.
Worst professor I have ever had at Iowa State. Lectures did not help at all and were always very dry.
Worst professor I've ever had. Most of the things he talks about doesn't make sense and the test is far different from what you learn in the class. Almost failed it took it again with a different professor and got a A-. That shows you what kind of teacher he is
Honestly I love economics, but this professor made it the most boring class I have ever taken in my entire life. What he covers are sometimes on the exams, sometimes we will spend a week on something and not even ever use it. I'm really good at econ and I barely got a C in the class. The first two exam's average score for the class was under 60%
He's too suborn to use blackboard so I can't see my grade online. He does however have a horribly outdated website that crashes nights before the exam because it can't handle all the people using it to study. USE BLACKBOARD!!!
He's the worst professor and hardest grader. He doesn't explain the material very well.
This is supposed to be an introduction to economics but instead he teaches advanced economics. Several of my friends in other Econ classes have no idea what I'm studying because it's not even included in the text. Don't take it with Quirmbach. He writes only equations on the board and never gives us an example to work on. He's terrible and awful.
Quirmbach is trying to teach advanced Econ class when a lot of students have never taken Econ in their lives. His class made my freshman year hard. He doesn't even use blackboard, he uses some old website that doesn't even work. If you're in his class GET OUT.
This is the hardest class I have ever taken. I go to class everyday and do all the readings but still struggle to pass because the questions on the exams are nothing like the material we go over in class. Three exams make up 80% of the grade.
I am warning all of you, PLEASE TAKE THIS CLASS WITH SOMEONE, ANYONE ELSE I have friends in Econ 101 classes with different profs who are learning way different things and it seems way easier to understand. Impossible to pass tests, isn't clear on what you should really be studying, lectures don't help at all. Worst professor/class I've had here.
He's really not that bad at all. I received an A- fairly easily. Just go to the friday groups and study by taking the practice exams and you'll do fine.
Don't take this class with him. Yes, he curves but not as much as you think. I decided to stay in his class because of the curve but still ended up with an F. He is not helpful and is by far, the worst teacher I have ever had.
Worst professor ever! I went to every lecture, paid attention, took notes, but it was no help since the tests and homework had nothing to do with the lectures. I recommend changing professors if you can
Teaches his 101 like a 400 level course. GPA destroyer
If I could give him a 0 I would. He teaches so difficult and ruined my GPA. NEVER take econ 101 with him.
This is one of the easiest class I've taken. He allows you to have a cheat sheet for each exam. He had an optional recitation that you could go to an automatically get a 100% on the homework for an hour of your time. The only "studying" I did for the exams was going to class, writing everything down on the board and making the cheat sheets.
Terrible dry lectures, Slept through half of them. Lecture doent really help on exams. Random pop quizzes beginning of lectures. The ECON help room saved my grade. Guy is a smart dude, not a good teacher. Explains it like he is talking to other Phd Economics professors
Worst class ever. Teaching advanced Econ to an introduction class. The lectures do not help with anything involving homework or exams. Get out now while you can
This dude makes your life way harder than it needs to be. Taking notes and paying attention in class will seem pointless when you start the practice exams. He doesn't know how to teach to an INTRODUCTION level class and assumes that everyone knows the material. If you want to take Econ then get a different professor.
Only grades 2 midterms and a final. Taking notes will not help you, he makes this introductory course way harder than it needs to be.
I'm not the best at econ to begin with. However, I did not like his notes/teaching style. Very vague notes. Goes out of book, so if you have the motivation to read the book you'll be better off. He offers practice tests before each test, but he's still one of the tougher professors.
Do not take Professor Quirmbach for Econ 101. He is a very knowledgable guy but cannot translate that wisdom into understandable language. Horrible class. Really have to teach yourself to do well.
DO NOT TAKE A CLASS WITH HIM. He is the worst teacher. He makes a 100 level class seem like a 400 level class. He has pop quizzes weekly. He curves his test but they are still impossible. If you take a class with him.. lol good luck!!
Go to the optional recitation, the TA's do a much better job of explaining the material than he does. He WILL go into random political tangents that do not have anything to do with the material. You can do well in his class, but you have to teach yourself and really utilize the previous tests to study off of.
Not many points are given in this course. Tests are extremely hard, and some contain topics that were barely touched on during lecture. Extremely hard homework assignments that can be very frustrating. Takes lots of time and effort.
Quirmbach is very educated on the topics he teaches, but he teaches expecting a bunch of, usually freshman, students to keep up with his knowledge. He makes this course a 400 level class when it should just be a 101. I would recommend you try and switch. I'm an engineering major and this was my hardest class and it was suppose to be my easiest :(
Very easy class overall. If you show up and do the problem sets you'll get an A. People that complain are just not up for a class like this. I easily earned an A by just doing exactly what he says.
Dr. Quirmbach is highly qualified and can be a bit of a stickler when it comes to participation in class, but he definitely teaches good material. This class made me decide to change my major to Economics. Tip: go to the optional recitations if you want, but the real benefit is past exams on the website and lectures.
He goes over so many topics and rambles a lot about the same thing. Sometimes it's hard to take notes on what he's talking about since he keeps going off on a tangent. He talks really fast too. Nice thing is that he does a lot of examples on the board, so you can copy them. The homework sometimes is a lot harder than the examples he gives in class.
Teaches material not covered in the book, and not appropriate for entry level classes.
He tried to make us go to an unscheduled recitation each week and I watched him rant for at least 5 minutes in front of a lecture hall once about a kid who took a calculator out of his bag for an exam by accident. I will never understand why this was an entry-level class. It was very difficult and lectures were extremely boring.
