He is head and shoulders (and a nose) ahead of many WPI profs... not bad at all.

Does problems wrong and has you learn them that way

Only time I actually had to hold my eyes open. This guy pooched me on the first math classes
You gotta stick it to the man to get any help out of him. Oh and he goes faster than speedy gonzales on E
he faild half his class , NO COMMENT
He was nice but he zipped through things so that it was kind of confusing sometimes. But he did enough example problems that it was ok.
Very smart guy, but he tends to move fairly quickly...
He never explains anything. He insults you in front of the whole class if you don't do well on something. He's rude.
Likes to derive everything really fast on the blackboard. Thankfully the TA gave more practical explanations during the help sessions. Very difficult class, but in all fairness, DiffEq always is and the book was hard to use.
What a jerk (a fitting phrase would be censored). This guy is the worst teacher ever, is rude, has horrible writing and is just plain a jerk.
Awesome professor! He teaches calc in a way none of my other teachers have taught it. He really forces you to understand it! I'm not a WPI student but I'm glad to have taken his course at WPI.
He did a wretched job of teaching calc 2. His explainations of trig integrals were particularly horrible, ammounting almost to "derive the equation every time you want to do a problem". Class drove me nuts.
The previous comments pretty much sum up Servatius rather well. He's an okay professor, but one has to be prepared to understand quickly. He will explain everything - but his reexplnations will be quicker and more scant than the first time around.
he is the worst professor EVER. He is like a giant 50 year old wedge rat, but atleast wedge rats are NICE. He ISN'T. If you see him in your class at the beginning of the term, do yourself a favor and turn around and walk right back out of the room.
Servious lectures are very unclear,no body in the class understand a thing he said. I basicly learn cal 2 myself by reading thruough every single page in the book. But his test were pretty easy if you understand the materials.
Goes a little fast, but if you have questions he does a good job of answering them. Random irrelevant comments add humor to the class, and he is pretty nice except if a cellphone goes off in class. Tests are unpredictable for the most part as far as difficulty goes.
Horrible.Like all other math teachers at this school, doesn't know how to explain or use logic.prerequisite:calc4 :)Just quickly goes through examples with the word "obviously" understood throughout the explantions."i won't give trick questions on tests",yet nothing on tests are relative to homework.
what a miserable, boring, disgusting class. i learn more by reading the book myself. his tests are on absolutely nothing that was done in class, which is really frustrating because the homeworks that he assigns are all easy.
very booring class, doesnt teach well, test s are hard
Friendly, goes too fast in lecture, not very flexible for tests, etc... Overall did an average job teaching this class...
just a HORRIBLE professor. RUDE, UNHELPFUL and BORING
Herman Servatius is an idiot... he will be by far the worst teacher you have at WPI. He doesn't do any examples and is very rude in help sessions. His tests are rediculous because they do not cover any of the material taught.
Worst teacher ever. I felt like I studied the wrong material when I looked at his tests.

I had already taken calc 1, but when I went to this class, I realized that we must special math at WPI. Nothing covered in "lectures" was actually Calc 1 material. Instead of allowing us to use the weekly conference as a help session as we were supposed to, he assigned the TA to give us the weekly test. Rather self-explanatory...
Good Luck! His notes are hard to read, and he assumes that everybody has taken calc before.
This guy is the worst teacher at wpi. Do not take a class with him ever and if you get stuck with him enjoy doing all your work on your own... he does nothing to help you. Good Luck.
This gut is the worst teacher I have ever had in my life. He goes way too fast through lecture and mubles to himself the entire time. He stands in the way so you can't see wat he is writing. He writes faster than he can talk so there is no way to keep up with him while trying to learn the material at the same time. Don't enroll in his classes!!!

He moves quickly through the material, but always makes time for questions during lecture. He's not great at explaining the topics, but he knows the material very well. That counts for alot.
Servatious was tough, but I learned a lot. He teaches you everything you need to do well on the tests. Do the Home work, study, and do practice problems. The tests are hard, but not impossible. Do well in this class and you are golden for the final. He is tough, but in the end it is worth it and you can always ask questions.
I took his class at Clark University. Turn you phone off, common sense but he really HATES it when a phone rings. Halfway through the class my mind is drifting and I’m thinking ‘this is boring’, but hey, it’s calculus, what did you expect. He is alright, he actually seems very passionate about what he teaches, at times says funny random things.
His tests have improved throughout the years (see website,) and are what we learn in class. If I can keep up (use breaks while he writes sentences on board) I find he makes a kind of sense I can recreate. I noticed he's rude, but it's an understandable/non-bothersome kind of rude. However, the textbook and class are different worlds.
Really great professor and a great guy.
Does not require you do the HW, that's because they do not help on his quizzes. His quizzes are based off the TOPIC he teaches, but the actual quizzes are something that are completely different. Most people are getting 4's and 5's out of ten on his quizzes. Do not recommend him for any math class you have to take.
His lectures do not cover much, and you essentially have to learn the material yourself. The course is not too challenging, but he likes to test you with "True" or "False" questions, and not on actual computations.
Easily the worst professor I've had at this school. Does not communicate well with PLAs at all. No one fully understood which book section was on each quiz/ homework that was due. WASTE OF YOUR MONEY.
Such an awful professor. I've had him twice now, for linear algebra and differential equations. Try to avoid him at all costs.
poor communication with TA's, homework was graded but not handed back, poor teaching in general. he's an interesting person, but a god awful teacher. avoid.
Worst professor at WPI. Everyone says the same stuff: he moves too fast, doesn't explain things clearly, is rude, works awfully with TAs/SAs, and isn't willing to put any effort into helping you understand the material. Oddly enough, if you scroll down you'll see he has some good reviews from when he left WPI.. But everyone here says hes horrendous
Awesome teacher! His tests were brutal. Class averages tend to be below 60. But I get 100s on all of them because I am boss at Calculus. I love his Ponytail, but it is very distracting. He likes to jump when answering questions. Great Professor!
Nice person, but extremely poor lectures. His quizzes are far harder than any of the homework and it is difficult to prepare for them. He also throws random identities into his quiz problems.
nice person and lecture quizzes are easier than the home work
Worst Professor I've ever had. Definitely one to avoid. Ridicules students for asking questions and constantly makes mistakes.
Although many people say he's bad, I thought he was a very good professor. Very enthusiastic about math and I thought his explanations were very clear of the things we actually needed to know. Does a lot of crazy proofs on the board but does not expect them to be learned, just understood.
IF YOU HAVE NOT TAKEN AP BC OR EQUAL CALCULUS, DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS. He teaches special cases in lecture and proves formulas before writing them making it hard to follow. This term he did not count graded homework so don't expect a cushion from the final (main grade portion).
A pretty good class. He derives formulas before telling you so that can be confusing. His quizzes are pretty hard and are the hardest version possible of a problem. A nice guy overall though
Servatius was a horrible teacher. First of all his handwriting is awful. I had to sit very close to the front to read it. His quizzes are difficult. The worst part was he would do examples with deliberate mistakes, but not tell us the mistakes so we would learn it wrong then have to relearn it. And he is bad at explaining examples.
Worst teacher I have ever had in my life. Do everything you can to avoid taking his class. Not helpful at all in any way. Quizzes are much more difficult than assigned homework problems. Overall, terrible teacher.
Do not take a class with him. He is not helpful at all. You can ask him questions but he will not give you a useful answer and when prompted for something more helpful he makes no attempt to help. Doesn't respond to emails. If you can't figure the class out on your own or with your TA you will feel pretty hopeless.
He has a very unique class setup where he lets you choose whether you want to hand in the weekly quiz. Make use of this and only hand in quizzes you are sure of. The final exam is basically 3 or 4 quiz questions. He did offer a "double-down" quiz in the last week which lets you replace your lowest two quizzes. This was very useful.
You need solid understanding of Maths (sets, functions, recursive definitions etc.). If you fail this class it means you were not prepared for the class, it doesn't mean the professor was bad. I liked it, but need to work hard, of course - if it were easy everybody would get a Master's degree.
Skipping lectures is okay Not doing hw is okay Easy to get high grade if you are good at doing quizes However, lectures are really boring and !!!you can't even clearly read his writing
Fantastic teacher and impressive proofs. It is clear that he loves mathematics and understands the material. I just wish he was not tied down to the calc 4 material.
Clear insight, great at explaining the real DEPTH behind mathematics.
Professor Servatius seems like a nice person who is very passionate about calculus. However, his explanations are rarely very clear. He often does not work through problems completely, and his lectures are very fast-paced. The book is no help either, but overall, he is a relatively adequate professor.
Worst math teacher I've ever had in my life. Lectures are useless because he doesn't teach anything useful for the quizzes. He spends all his time proving formula without showing how to apply. Avoid him if you can.
His writing is confusing, so if you want to learn something in class, you have to pay attention to his words. You can learn all the techniques needed to pass quizzes in class, but if you want to know more read textbooks. The quizzes are not hard if you prepare for them and practice a lot. And he loves the function z9-x^2-y^2.
Only forced to rush through material because he must fit several chapters into a concise, 6 week time frame. Read through lesson in PDF before class and ask questions during lecture. HW isn't collected, but complete it in order to understand the class. Go to office hours. Extremely helpful. He'll talk you through any concept you don't understand.
AMAZING teacher. Made me like math! Extremely insightful and interesting lectures and nice human being. You have to work to do well in the class but it is well worth it. Would take again in a heartbeat! Herman is the best!
To consolidate the good and bad reviews, I will say that he's a difficult but interesting professor. His lectures are not so much "teachings" as they are demonstrations; they are helpful if you follow and study adequately on your own. Do not expect to be spoon fed. He's an incredibly intelligent person and will teach you a lot if you try to learn.
Overall he was a great teacher. He really has a genuine love for mathematics. Quizzes were somewhat difficult, but not too bad. Final test is extremely easy, and depending on how many quizzes you turn in, it is worth a lot of your grade. You do have to read the textbook if you want to do well, however. Put in the work and you'll get an A.
Awful teacher. Avoid at all costs
Many people don't like his class, but in my opinion he is very dedicated in teaching. I love the games he gave us on class, it was fun. He gives quizzes every week and you can choose to submit it or not. It's only a matter of percentage of the final. As long as you do or ask him to do the practice problems on conference you can get an easy A.
Professor Servatius is a tremendous lecturer. If you pay attention and take notes you will be sure to learn something. With that said his grading system is a little strange and many students don't prefer him because of that. He is a very respectable man but his grading system could be changed. He is pretty lenient in terms of points given on a quiz
Despite what many say, Prof. Servatius is a fine teacher. However, you are expected to put in your own work and read the book on your own. His grading criteria is as follows: one quiz every week (for 7 weeks) that makes up 10% of your grade. The remaining 30% is for the final. BUT you can choose not to turn in a quiz, adding 10% weightage to final.
Go to class and take notes, go to conference, which is helpful. He moves fast on the board, sometimes unreadable. He provides all books. I needed more time on the quizzes. Good material for ECE. Pay attention to the unique grading style, and plan ahead to take advantage, this could save you. Covers unique topics - induction, logic, and RSA.
Doing well is not impossible, but difficult. His lectures are fast-paced and full of proofs. His writing is often messy and illegible. Lectures don't cover much of the hw. You must do the hw to pass. Take advantage the double down quiz. Very passionate about math; he is not as bad as others say, but be prepared to self-teach and do the work.
A very intense, but engaging professor. He seemed to be really into what he was teaching, and was actually pretty good at explaining material, given how difficult I found it. Be prepared for the occasional trick question on quizzes, though.
Servatius is certainly an experience. A lot of people complain about his class, which is difficult, but it is possible to succeed in his class. Tests are tricky but the do stick to the material he teaches. Plays mindgames with his grading policy. He's a very smart man who teaches a tough subject, he's tough but fair.
Grading system is weird. Great lectures but often about things not relevant to what will be asked on quizzes. Quiz questions often have nothing to do with what is talked about in class. Be able to teach yourself.
He spends most of the time explaining proofs on the whiteboard however a good amount of it is illegible. Often makes mistakes that students point out.
Really nice guy, but his teaching style just didn't work for me. I had a hell of a time following the course material with him. I didn't have this trouble with other math professors so I don't think it was all just me.
Weird grading system. Probably the most confusing lecturer in this school. His lecture is like he brainstorms and talk it out loud, maybe he follows his own logic but extremely hard to follow for students. His handwriting is just illegible.
Set up exactly the same as his undergraduate courses: final exam being 30% of final grade (cumulative of entire semester), and quizzes each week making the other 70% of the grade. Look at past quizzes online to know what to expect for all his tests, no matter what course. Awful at teaching. CS503 still would have been better and probably easier.
I thought I was taking discrete Math. Turns out I learned more about french war cannons than anything else.
Not a bad professor. Homework problems can be challenging and unnecessarily long, but if you understand the homework problems then you should do fine on the tests.
I feel I became smarter by taking his class! shout out to Professor Servatius!
Servatius has possibly the worst student communication of any professor I've taken. Homework collection is never made clear (despite it not counting for credit; he uses homework to decide how much to curve up border grades at the end). Quizzes were short, full of trick questions, and involved mind games as to whether you chose to submit them.
Although this subject seemed difficult, as he said working on homework problems helped to score good in quizzes and exam
10% of what's written on the board is unreadable. listening to lecture covers for 9% of what's unreadable. encourages questions during class. you can choose to not submit a quiz and it won't count against you but will make the final count for more of your grade. pay attention, do the hw, don't buy the textbook, and you'll be fine. i like the class
He is not a good professor and doesn't care about how much we are struggling in his class he just leaves that part to the TAs and they are actually way more helpful than he is and they should be the professor instead because they can actually explain concepts and answer questions and actually care about the students.
I really enjoyed this class. He was very helpful and the assignments were always good measures of course work and graded fairly. He was tough but because of that I learned a lot. I would absolutely recommend
I have never and will never have another professor as bad as Herman Servatious. The thought that he makes a six figure salary as a professor makes me sick. He does not teach things in a way most people can comprehend. He writes tiny and messily and no one can read it. He makes tests of very small quantity worth tons and obscenely difficult.
The obstacle course that is the weekly quiz games is ridiculous.
Over complicates material. Lecture style makes taking notes very difficult.
His lectures are a stream of conciseness making note-taking very hard. If you have the option to take someone else please do! Also for clac 4, the break down of grades goes as following: 90% Exams, 5% HW, 5% Lab which is very annoying and difficult because the labs basically count as nothing.
Discrete math with Professor Servatius was mediocre at best. He is very knowledgeable and definitely interested in the material. He does not explain very well and assumes prior knowledge for a lot of topics. The class is difficult, but if you do the homework and take every quiz you should be able to get a B.
Not the best at explaining but he tries and works with the student to make sure they pass. The class itself is pretty hard, and with covid its not easier
Just reuses recorded lectures (many of which have mistakes that he doesn't catch, leading to a lot of confusion among students and he never lets us know anywhere about them). Bad at scheduling (has quizzes on days off and doesn't change it until midnight on the quiz day). Not easily reachable, not flexible. He is knowledgeable about the subject
Definitely knowledgeable about the material. Lectures are posted asynchronously which is convenient. Quizzes are optional and can be replaced with your grade on the final exam if you'd like. Lectures are pretty easy to understand. He's not the best at scheduling and communication.
Professor Servatius is very hard to follow and although clearly has a good understanding of the topic material, doesn't do a good job at explaining it
Servatius is.. an experience. He's intelligent and certainly knows the material, but doesn't usually explain it very well. The tests made up 81% of the grade, so if you're going to take this class with him, you best be a good test taker. Make sure to befriend the PLA, as he can be hard to reach for help. Not the worst, but there are better options.
Although he seemed to care about his students, the entirety of the class was taught on a chalkboard, and it was often tough to follow what he was doing during his lectures. It wasn't terrible though, and you can manage if you work through it. If you are in Salisbury 411 like I was, you might want a front row seat to see the board clearly.
Good at explaining things, but makes mistakes that get called out. 60% of the grade is 6 quizzes, 10 minutes each where you can "strike" if you're not confident that you did well (only before grading). That 10% will be added to the final, which is 30% (base). 10% is group proofs. Lots of partial credit, but pretty inaccessible outside of class.
The whole class is graded on 100 points overall. I went to his office hours, told me that I must not be trying hard enough yet I spend 10+ hours a week studying. Doesn't give answers to questions, instead will say things like "This is easy I learned it in third grade you don't need me to tell the answer" to something no one has ever seen before.
The slides are incorrect. makes changes in the slides during the lectures. Like fi your slides before the class please.
Lectures were clear, well paced, and well organized. I found the exercises and quizzes to be very fair. Feedback on quizzes was timely and helpful.
Notes are poorly designed. Textbook is a scam and shouldn't be advertised to buy. Gives examples but never the solutions. Exercises are given weekly to be used as practice for the quiz, but the exercise solutions aren't given until after the quiz so how are they supposed to help? Poorest teacher I've had here by far.
Really hard class for no reason. Syllabus is confusing and you are only graded by few things. No homework. Does not explain anything. My grandma was literally dying before the final and he wouldn't let me take it at home so I could go see her. Do not recommend.
Discrete math with Servatius was extremely difficult. Avoid him if you can and take it with the other professor. However if you must, I still think he is a professor who genuinely cares about his students. He's very accessible during office hours and responds to emails. The class just takes a ton of practice, so prepare yourself going in.
horrible. textbook has wrong answers, exercises have wrong answers. tas have no chill taking off points and 90/100 points of the whole class is quizzes. prof is hard to follow, is not helpful, did not even bother to show up for his office hours on the day of the final. if you get a total of 10 points off, youre automatically at a 90. dont take it.
Absolutely awful. Lectures were confusing and poorly explained, and he refused to clarify anything and would point to the textbook when asked. Exercises often had wrong answers, and sometimes remarks instead of answers stating that if you got it wrong it was your fault. TAs weren't much help either, didn't seem confident in the course material.
Doesn't care about students
just do learn and work everyday
Herman Servatius is clearly intelligent. This, unfortunately, manifests as a boiling witch's cauldron of laziness, lack of clarity, overestimation, and terrible accommodation. He is a poor professor that cannot share the meaning of Discrete Mathematics with his students and commonly writes wrong answers. Self-study or take it with someone else.
Lectures were engaging (though antiquated). Do all of the quizzes and homework and you will do fine. No need to buy the textbook. This was personally one of my favorite classes at WPI and Prof. Servatius knew his stuff.
Servatius is a bit of a controversial professor at WPI for his teaching style, but as long as you pay attention in lectures and make sure to do practice problems that he recommends, you should be fine. The quiz heavy style might not be ideal for some, but he usually is leinient on quiz grades.
Professor Servatius has a unique teaching style, but the course content can be challenging. Attend lectures, complete assignments diligently, and consider using study tools like Unstuck AI to stay on top of the material. Overall, a rewarding class.
The professor is very clearly knowledgeable of the subject matter taught. HOWEVER, don't be fooled because the way he teaches lectures is horrendous. There is no clear line of reasoning as he writes jumbled material on the board. He constantly writes a ton of material on the board with no organization. If you can, skip this class.
Literally the GOAT. If you just go to class and do homework you're basically gonna get an A. He's very giving on points and genuinely cares about students success. Gave extra credit points for basically every quiz. Yea quizzes are most of your grade but he's pretty forgiving and accommodating especially if you're actually showing up to class.
Prof. Servatius' RMP isn't reflective of his actual teaching. While the course is 60% Quizzes, 25% Final, 10% Group Assignment Proofs, and 5% HW, he makes quizzes the most important course content & gives bonus points. The lectures may be hard to follow but key ideas are all that's tested. Discrete Math is a hard class, but he's a great professor.
Very disorganized in lectures. Could never stick to the point at all. He often is terrible at explaining concepts and mostly just repeats himself and doesn't make content easy to digest at all
Servatius doesn't upload homework at consistent times, won't allow the discussion leader to post notes, provides no practice exams, goes on unrelated math tangents, and doesn't respond to emails timely. His one saving grace though is he is lenient in his grading, my work should've earned a B. Attend discussion, do the homework, and find help online
Lectures are very disorganized and hard to follow, but he is forgiving with grading.
Lectures were hard to follow but he is very forgiving with his grading. He gave 7 weekly quizzes and a final (homework was 5 bonus points on your overall grade).
