Horrible professor! I would not recommend him to anyone. The class was pointless to go to and he just rambles on about his own opinions on everything. It was an easy A though because of online quizzes.

He has you buy a 130$ bundle, so he can do nothing! Quizzed on what you teach yourself from the book. I hate this class.

This is the worst professor ever. He is like your worst nightmare. His BB quizzes are hell, and when you ask for help all he tells you is to read the book. Most the class is failing his quizzes and he doesn't care. Stay away, save your GPA.

I agree with every one else...50% of the class dropped within two weeks. I hung around a few more weeks and got the heck outa there! If you like stress, anxiety and failing open book quizes then this is the class for you.

The guy is rude! Had problems logging on to take the online quizes and he told me to figure it out by myself. Once I finaly got the quizes up and working with the help of another prof, they were easy. Hard to hear and understand! Find a different teacher!

don't take this class unless you have tons of spare time for busy work/homework. you have to teach yourself the material. he doesn't answer your questions. take the class redit/no credit or switch to a different professor.

Don't take his classes. Complete idiot who likes to push his atheist views on the whole class. If you aren't atheist he thinks your stupid. Class is boring and point less to go to except for attendance. 60% of grade is for online quizes which is the ONLY good part of this class.

this is not a very hard class, but it is VERY boring. I would not recommend this professor, but if you must take him, bring other homework to class to pass the time. attendence is required, easy online quizzes, regular homework, open book final. he's just a boring and weird guy.

TERRIBLE professor. Be prepared to teach yourself and be bored mindless during class. All of his powerpoints are straight out of the book, and won't even give you another example. If you have a quesiton he tells you to look in the book, and moves on. Do NOT take this professors class.

Absolutely HORRIBLE, DO NOT TAKE HIM!!!! THe final project sucks, he is the most unhelpful, inflexible professor I have ever had. Online quizzes are impossible, and you never even get to know the right answers. Class is super boring, and powerpoints are straight out of the book. This professor was the worst professor I ever had. His powerpoints are pointless, he can't explain things, and yeah, his quizzes are easy, but, if yo miss them, your screwed. Find someone else, because the content is cool.

The class structure is fine, the quizes make you read, the homework makes you work with your partners. Unfortunately, he is a horrible teacher - not nice, not helpful, and hypocritical. He is a wonderful researcher and that is what he should stick to.

The single worst teacher I have ever had a GVSU. The guy is unclear about almost everything in class, doesn't help students out even when they ask for help, expects everyone to understand things they've never learned, and goes over topics AFTER homework has already been turned in, therefore guaranteeing students poor grades. Avoid him!!!

Did not care for him at all. There was a definite language barrier & when asked to clarify things it did not help. He made us take an online quiz every weekend. What kind of evil person does that? The quizzes are directly from the book, almost nothing from his boring lecture helped. Avoid his class if at all possible!

Professor Kurthen does not belong teaching. Although he is very knowledgable about analyzing data, his approach to his students is cold and unhelpful. The class has potential to be informative, but our group is never right and cannot get anything right for the project which comprises almost our entire semester grade.

I'd rather hang myself with my own shoestrings than have him again. I don't have one positive thing to say.

Easily the most worthless professor at GVSU. Completely wasted my time every class period. How can a sociology professor be ****? No joke, we spent a week learning that racism is bad...a week! Never take this fool, ever.

Easy A, but worst prof. evvver - if you can even understand any english from his german accent it is still likely you won't get anything out of this course. Online quiz every week worth 60% of you grade. Online final, pretty easy. Didn't learn anything.

Do not take this class. He expects you to go but everything is online. It is so pointless.

His class made me want to die. Ridiculous amounts of homework. Online quizzes every week. It was like he thought that was the only class anyone was taking. If you're looking for an ejoyable learning enviornment, or to learn anything really, don't take him.

Very Non-traditional student UNFRIENDLY. Professor uses MOSTLY Trick questions on quiz's. If I would have taken this with anyone else I probably would have gotten an A. In a meeting with him and he said I was doing good that he could tell I was reading and studying....I showed him that not only I highlighted but took 20 pages of notes on each Ch.

If you are a SOC Major and have to take SOC 304, sorry he is the only prof that teaches it, he is rude and he does not explain things well AT ALL. If you are a SOC minor take SOC 305 instead with Campbell, she is a much better professor.

He is an awful professor. His lessons have nothing to do with anything in the book. He literally does not even teach anything in lectures. Your grade gets marked down even if you miss one class, unless you have a doctor's note. The tests are all online, including the final, so it's an easy A. His lectures, which are essentially mandatory, are bad.

Professor Kurthen is German and you can barley understand anything hes saying. He makes class mandatory, which is stupid because you can teach herself easily. He gives weekly quizzes which are pretty challenging if you don't read the chapters which are super long. His lectures are super long and boring. Everyone just sleeps.

The majority of the grade in this class comes from reading the book and taking the weekly online quizzes. Attendance is mandatory, and unfortunately his lectures are absolutely irrelevant regarding what you're actually reading in the book. Don't even bother e-mailing him because the chances of a response are slim. Avoid at all costs.

The only time you learn something in this class is when the groups present their projects. The rest of class time is spent on him teaching you how to "adequately learn" the material. The online quizzes are easy but your grade mostly depends on the group project, and what your partners tell him greatly affect the grade you get, so beware of that.

He had weekly quizzes that made up 40% of our grade, and his lectures hardly ever had anything to do with what was actually on the quizzes. There was no point in going other than that he made us for a grade. And if you live far away, you're screwed for quizzes if your internet goes out.; you can't redo a quiz if you don't take it on campus.

He is a very sweet guy and I feel bad because his class sucks. Attendance is mandatory even though you don't learn anything in the lectures. There are weekly online quizzes so you HAVE to read the book. Every single essay was completely pointless and unrelated to the class. The final exam is online so you can use your book and classmates.

he does try to make this class easy but it does not work. his lectures are pointless as they do not have any relation to the online quizzes and attendance is mandatory for points so it is just a waste of time. He does not teach you much and just goes on rants about different topics. would not recommend taking his class to anyone

One of the worst professors ive had. Class was mandatory and no matter your excuse for why you missed, you were marked down. He was not forgiving. Online weekly quizzes. In class, when your opinion was asked, if he didn't agree, you were shot down. Take someone else. Tough grader.

This class is challenging if you are not willing to work. He is a drag. Most lectures are random and have nothing to do with the actual class material. Class is pointless, but make sure you go because it mattes. You also get graded on participation so raise you hand a couple times. Don't expect him to know you or your name. Thick accent.

This was the worst class I have ever taken with one of the worst teachers.

Attendance is mandatory. lectures have nothing to do with the chapters. You are expected to read a chapter a week a take a quiz on that chapter and the quizzes are about half your grade so you can't do bad on them unless you want a bad grade. Not many assignments either. If you take this class, make sure its not with him.

He lectures about topics unrelated to the content. The weekly online quizzes require a lot of preparation, but that doesn't guarantee you'll get a good grade if you prepare in advance

I hated this class, it sucked. His lectures are not related to the weekly quizzes at all, they are long and boring.

His lectures rarely had anything to do with what chapter we were on, which is unfortunate because the weekly quizzes are worth almost half of your grade. The quizzes required self teaching and preparation. All of the other assignments are easy and there is one group project. He can also come off as rude at times.

Focus on reading, don't bother taking notes. Stay on top of group work. The class was not interesting, but I did learn a little bit.

Honestly, the worst prof I've had so far. It's a 101 and was the worst grade of my semester. I am a straight A student, and am passing the class with a C. Would not recommend him. Attendance is also mandatory, even if there is an emergency. The quizzes are so hard too and there are some every week. Lots of reading. Overall a terrible class.

I would recommend that you DO NOT take a class with Kurthen at ANY cost. Guys. It was awful. Lectures have nothing to do with weekly quizzes which were super hard. You basically teach yourself with the book. There's a giant, hard group project. It can make or break your grade. If you miss one class, your grade drops. He isn't understanding at all.

Grades attendance, group project is intended for students to teach course so that he doesn't have to, and he doesn't. Condescending and patronizing, his feedback is trash, I didnt attend class regularly and managed to do better than those who did attend. If you're taking him, just dont. He is the horror story you hear about. Good luck if you are!

This class was incredibly hard. Group and individual assignments were graded very hard and they make up the majority of your grade. The weekly quizzes were sometimes found online, but if you fail one it can hurt your grade a lot. For a 101 course a lot of work is expected with very harsh grading. My GPA and I regret not trusting the ratings.

His lectures make no sense and don't follow the reading at all. He talks very quietly and often interchanges between speaking in German and English so it never makes sense. you have a reading quiz every week that are hard. no midterm and his final is online.

Prof. Kurthen is very specific but doesn't give feedback on what you could improve upon. I found myself wondering multiple times why I received the grade I got, as they seemed relatively random. He does a lot of group work, which is inconvenient in an online class. Overall, I didn't enjoy the class but it wasn't terribly hard.

This is probably the only class I didnt do well in. Each week you read a chapter, then look over two PowerPoints. One by him and one by a group. Then therell be weekly tasks were is usually group related, and a quiz at the end of the week. Given this semester was weird because of online classes, it wasnt a fun experience

If I could give this professor a 0 rating I would. Each week you have a quiz, individual task, and group task. The individual task is an easy A. The quizzes are unrealistically specific and even when you read the chapter they are very difficult to get an A on. For group tasks, I have never gotten an A. He is beyond picky and gives no feedback.

If I would have found this website before my semester started, I would definitely not have taken this class. He was a terribly picky grader, used group tasks every week (along with group presentations) in order to make the students teach the course instead. Do not take this course, period. You will regret it.

My class was online so IDK how he is in person but he was really hard to work with. He is a very tough grader and had difficult group projects every week, despite this being an online asychronous class. It's very hard to find time for a group to work together in this setting. If I didn't like Sociology before taking this class, I would've hated it.
