Hesam is my favorite math professor at NYU. He is organized and clear about his expectations. There is a lot of material but there are no surprises on his exams. Take this class if you want a direct teacher who is always happy to help you.
Hes an excellent teacher. I took him 4 MFE1&decided 2 take him for MFE2. Hes super clear&straight foward. He will always provide u with a basic explanation or a structured procedure as to how to approach a problem&then will dive into practice problems that start off easy&gradually get harder. If u understand everything in his lecture notes ur good
Hesam is an amazing professor. I had him at 8 am but I never skipped any lectures. He's very passionate about what he does but very fast-paced. His lecture notes are online but they're not helpful because the thing he uses to take notes has a lot of technical problems. do not rely on them. go to lectures. The department final exam really screwed me
I took math for econ-1 and loved the course. His lectures are very good and he explains concepts very well. There is a lot of homework and there are 3 exams for this course but it isn't that difficult. If you got through the class notes, you should be in a good place for the exams.
I got him for MFE I and he is a very clear teacher. If it's not in the notes, it is unlikely to be on the exam. This makes it easy to study for his tests if you go to class, pay attention, and do the homework. Not very difficult if you try.
Prof. Oveys is probably the best Math professor I've ever had. Without a doubt. His lectures are super clear and he always takes a lot of time to make sure everyone has understood the concepts. His lecture notes, which you can access live during class, by the way, are phenomenal (and comprehensive - need only this to study). 11/10 would recommend.
Hesam was a great prof. I took him for QR: Prob, Stats, and Decision Making (core math requirement) and it was honestly a breeze. He knew no one was a math major and made the material extremely manageable and accessible. Explains things very clearly and concisely. Online lecture notes were super helpful. Definitely take his classes!!
Hesam is by far one of the most thorough and driven professors there is. He doesn't miss much on his lectures and he has online notes that are super accessible. He cares a lot about his students and if you simply listen to him and review the notes, it should be an easy A. His tests are not hard at all.
Hesam Oveys is by far the best professor I have encountered at NYU so far. He takes great care in preparing his lectures and has clear guidelines for grading. He solves problems and explains concepts thoroughly in class and puts his notes online. His exams test only what he has taught and are quite easy. Worth taking.
Best teacher I have had at NYU hands down. The content seems so easy when he teaches it but you soon realize that it is not because the content itself is easy but because he is such a good teacher.
if you're an econ major and planning to take MFE, HESAM IS THE MAN
Hesam is the best professor you could take for MFE class. His exams are reasonable and test on what he covers in class. He gives amazing notes and teaches in a very simple manner. A lot of people get 100% on his exams.
There's a lot of material in MFE II, but Professor Oveys is clearly enthusiastic about the subject, his lectures are engaging, there's a lot of homework but its generally not too difficult, and he's pretty accessible outside of class. Exams are of moderate length and difficulty. Quizzes every recitation unless stated otherwise.
Very clear, thorough, and nice. Definitely take him if you can.
Hesam is really great. His online notes are the only resource you need for studying. Not sure what grade I have yet but I enjoyed being taught by him for sure and would take him again.
The tests are easier than the homework, but the final exam is a little bit difficult. And he curves to get one-third of the class As and A-s. The material is not easy, but his lecture is super clear and helpful. If you pay attention in class and do your homework carefully, this class will be an easy A.
He's a really great lecturer, and knows how to explain mathematical concepts in simple terms. His exams are fairly easy and straightforward, but there's hardly any curves for those in the mathematics for economics sequence courses.
Really great professor, a hardass who seems to care a lot. Classes move quickly and calc 2 is difficult, but a combo of hard work, office hours, and asking lots of questions left me with an A-, even after a difficult final exam (which was not written by Hesam). Notes are always online, quizzes are predictable, HWs are interesting. Big thumbs up!!!
Took Hesam for MFE-1 and MFE-3. The structure of both courses is the same, which makes it easy to adjust to. The midterms are fairly easy if you go through the lecture notes. The final exam is a little tricky but he curved it, so it worked out well. There are 2 weekly hw's and 1 weekly quiz. The hw's are not too difficult but some quizes are.
Dr. Oveys is extremely passionate about teaching and making sure we understand the underlying concepts, without take us too deep. His exams are relatively straightforward if you do what he says. Overall a fantastic professor!!!
Best math teacher I've had at NYU so far. Great lectures, fair grading and always willing to help.
Hesam is by far the best professor I have had at NYU. He is outstanding at explaining concepts, has very clear grading criteria, and the notes from class go directly to a website you can access at any time to review. He always responds to emails quickly with very helpful responses. Also, he seems like he'd be a cool guy to guy to grab a beer with.
If you like Sal from Khan Academy, you'll love Hesam. Teaches the same way (digital pen) and you can access those notes in real time. No textbook needed. The examples he gives start easy and get progressively harder. There are "no surprises" on exams. The material is difficult, but Hesam somehow makes it seem manageable, interesting, and relevant.
I am not the best in math so it was hard for me but Hesam is a great professor. His notes are amazing. Do the math problems over and over again from it and you will be in good shape. There are no surprises on the exams but they also account for 70% of your grade. Don't expect any curves as most of the students do well on the exams.
Great lecture and very helpful.
Hesam is an incredibly organized teacher and a talented lecturer. Absolute pleasure to take Calc 2 with him.
Professor Oveys is a good teacher and is very fair and reasonable. HOWEVER, Math for Econ 2 is an EXTREMELY difficult math class so don't take it unless you are 100% sure you want to major in Econ or math. Also there is A LOT of material to go through and you will be working in MFE2 (he drops 3, but still). Oveys gets an A, MFE2 gets an F.
SWEET
Literally the best math teacher I've ever had. He explains everything in such a great and simple way!!! Did horribly on the first exam, told me what I did wrong and allowed me to beast up on my next 2. I really love this guy's way of teaching. Exams are not to trick you; it's simple - if you know the material you'll do fine!
Don't even hesitate to choose his courses! Legit best prof I've ever had so far. I wish he can teach all my math courses in the future. By the way, Average of 5.0 overall rating here explains everything already!
ACTUALLY one of the BEST math professors I've ever had. Super passionate + nice, explains things clearly, and very accessible outside of class! His exams + homework are not there to trick you! Just do the practice problems in class and you'll be fine. Puts all the notes online too.
Lectures are generally good! Notes are clear, and he explains most of the concepts in simple ways. But when you go to his office hours or to ask him questions after class, he is a little impatient.
Hesam is a real gem in the math department. He, very thoroughly, explains every problem and even posts the notes electronically if you had to miss a lecture. Even though its a big class and attendance isn't taken, I highly recommend going as you will learn a lot and the material will then be easier to master come exam time.
He was great. My favorite professor I've had so far. He explains everything VERY clearly and he is always available to talk to. The one thing I did not like about this class was recitation. The TAs did not know what they were doing and they made everyone more confused about the material.
Best teacher ever
Best professor I've had at NYU. Explains the concepts really well and makes it extremely clear of what is expected in the course. Not hard to do well in the class if you go through his lecture notes thoroughly, exams are very straightforward. Very helpful outside of class as well. Would definitely take him again, BEST math professor at NYU!!
The way he explains concepts is so clear and understandable. His exams are very straightforward and fair. Great professor!
Oveys is one of the best teachers I have ever had. He explains the material in a way that appeals to each student and is available to help whenever you need it. His tests and quizzes are straightforward and there is never anything tested to surprise the students. Take him, you will not regret it.
As a person that hates math, I still have to say that he is the best math prof I've ever met!! His lecture notes are so organized, and he explains every concept nice and clearly. I wish every prof can be like him
For people who have taken calculus in high school, he is a terrible choice for a professor. If you don't show work on tests the way he wants, you will lose points. Quizzes every recitation, and most of them are unnecessarily difficult. The course is more like advanced algebra than calculus. Do not recommend.
by far the best math professor at NYU. his lectures are amazing and his exams, although can be challenging, are straightforward. he's extremely clear about everything.
Dr. Oveys is an amazing. He explains everything clearly and he really wants you to understand. His notes are really good. However, the class is hard. 6 problem sets, lots of online hw, and weekly quizzes. As the other person said u have to show work, but that's a given. As long as it makes sense u should be fine. Oveys gets an A. Calc1 gets a C.
He's overall a pretty good teacher and explains concepts well, but exams can be tough. I also think it's ridiculous to have a 1-ish percent curve for a class so difficult.
He is very good at teaching. His very patient to teach you when you ask questions. He know how to make you understand the material. His exams are a little hard but some students can get perfect scores.
Very well organized lectures; we go through a ton of examples in class, everything is explained very clearly. Tests aren't TOO hard; there're quizzes each week (mostly examples from lectures). Professor Oveys is also accessible outside class and responsive to emails. And don't be intimidated by his grumpy voice he's actually very nice and caring!
Professor Oveys is the best professor at NYU. He teaches so clearly, my friend who is even in a different section goes to his lectures. Take Hesam Oveys for your math classes!
One word. Just perfect. Notes are succinct. Lectures provide lot of valuable knowledge. Exams are not hard at all and always to the point. A great professor for an uninspiring course. Take Hesam if you take calculus 1. Its as simple as that.
Professor Oveys is simply put: perfect. His lectures and style of explaining are super clear and understandable, his nots are succinct and prepare you well for the exam, and he is always ready to help you when you have doubts. He's the perfect teacher.
He's a great professor but be aware that you need to spend a lot of time on the class. He's almost too good of a professor because people do really well and there isn't a huge curve. It may not be the best idea to take this course if you're taking a lot of other difficult courses and don't have a lot of time to compete with others who do. Good guy.
I took him a while back for MFE 2 and now Im taking stats and I want him back. He cant be beat. MFE 2 is hard but his amazing teaching makes it doable. LOTS of homework, take it seriously. Exams arent easy but thats cause the material isnt easy, everything he puts on exams has been covered in lecture. I wish I could have him for every class.
Oveys is an absolute g. Never had a more organized professor - he keeps all his lecture notes on a real time OneNote, and he explains things SO well in lecture (MFE III) with TONS of examples. Material is hard but that's the class not Oveys. He cares a lot about his students and is super knowledgeable about the subject matter. Take him for MFE.
Exhaustingly passionate abt something as basic as calc. Exams not hard because everything has been covered in lectures, but harder/seemingly useless questions will show up and surprise you. Good lecture notes, but he wants you to put in the extra effort. Curve ended up being surprisingly generous.
You can't go wrong with Hesam. He makes the tough concepts accessible to all his students, which is something so crucial in mathematics. He doesn't make the class easy per se, but he does remove all the inefficiencies and extraneous work that other teachers might give.
Took him for MFE I. His lectures were clear and he is always accessible by email or during office hours. Lots of problems for practice. He knows what he is teaching. Take him!
He is literally the best teacher i have ever had in my entire life!! He explains every materials clearly and you do not even need a textbook.
Clear, organized, supportive. Excellent teacher. Fair, encouraging, accessible.
AMAZING!!! Prof Oveys is really there to make sure you learn and help you. Make an effort to participate as often as you can. Make office hours meetings, email him questions, etc! The midterm was 1000% harder than the final but if you work for it, you will learn and feel better by the end of the course. Don't slack & work hard but really an A+ prof
I haven't even finished the class yet, but I can say the good reviews are accurate. I would say his course is very well-balanced, which a lot of courses often lack. He'll give you a challenge but also give you the resources and guidance to work it out. He's an amazing lecturer and his notes are so well organized, it makes studying a lot easier.
Took him for MFE1 over the summer. His lectures are extremely clear, and he gives many good example problems. His midterm and final exams come mostly straight from the examples he gives in lectures. His lecture notes are clearly organized on OneNote. Written hws are pretty rough, but online hw and quizzes are manageable. responds quickly to emails
Fantastic MFE professor and probably one of the best professors at NYU period. Everything in his lecture is reflected in tests and quizzes so there are absolutely no surprises. He gives a lot of practice questions and explains each concept in detail. Take him!!!
I had him for MFE 1 over the summer and I miss him this fall semester. Take it if you can, he's amazing.
Yeah he's chill and pretty hilarious. Very solid choice. Kind of overhyped though lmao this should be the basic standard of teaching.
Prof. Oveys is a great professor, his lecture is extremely clear and the lecture notes are available online, which is very useful for review. Homeworks are biweekly and kind of hard, but the exam is much easier. Exams are base on examples in class, some problems are EXACTLY THE SAME! The grading is generous, as long as you show your clue.
Very good professor but definitely way overhyped on here. Prof Oveys assigns a lot of work (problem set every other week, hw every week, quiz almost every other week) and you need to be prepared or you will have a rough time for sure. He makes lectures interesting, and is very organized with online notes. Above average teacher, but a lot of work.
The BEST BEST BEST math professor at NYU! I had so much fun in his class! His notes are always organized and accessible. Very clear on what you will be graded on and test on in terms of concepts. If you get a chance, please take his course! He is very responsive and exams are always returned in a short period.
The best professors I had in NYU! I had him for calculus3, and he has his own way to explain mathematical concepts and problems, which makes them so easier to understand. You don't even need to read textbook because he explains everything clearly in class. Quizzes and midterms are easy because they are all based on the examples he covers in class.
He's a good teacher there's no doubt about that. But his class isn't just "put in the effort and you'll get an A". I put in a lot of effort and couldn't get an A. Personally I wasn't super fond of his teaching. I felt that he simplified things so much while teaching but homework/test questions were a lot more complicated than that. Overall good.
The lectures were pretty informative, but the homework and tests was pretty difficult.
The best math professor at nyu, no doubt. His lectures are clear and easy to follow along. He doesn't try and trick you on the exams as you are literally tested on what he teaches you from lectures. Homework was a bit more challenging but doable. I took him over the summer, so he taught material faster. If you have the chance to take him, do it!
Great guy. I hate math so IDK why I took this class. Super hard. His tests are harder than what he teaches in class because he believes if you have the basic tools you should be able to do harder problems. This is fine if you can comprehend and use what you learned, but I suck at math and need old examples to do new problems.
Very good professor. Tests are extremely fair and graded generously. Problem sets are definitely the most challenging, but you have a lot of time to complete them. Take him if you can.
Really good lecturer, I love his energy, and he reviews stuff nicely and succinctly. Generous grader, even gave a free 100 on a quiz that happened to line up poorly with a tough exam. Extremely accessible outside of class, he responded to campuswire questions insanely fast. Fair tests, and psets can be tough, but he helps a lot if you ask.
The most well-rounded professor I've had. The other reviews summarize him well; he is friendly, well-organized, accommodating, but also good at what he does. Take Professor Oveys!
He is a real gem! I like him! his class is very organized and interesting!
Very clear in presenting material, and quickly responsive in answering questions outside of class. Don't expect the questions on the exams to be very hard or unfamiliar since they're basically the same level of difficulty of the examples he gives out in lecture.
Easily one of the best professors NYU has to offer. His lectures are great and he truly has a gift for explaining things. There is a good amount of homework and they were challenging, but overall they were very helpful.
He is a really good professor. He took good notes in class with helpful examples and easy to access outside of class. He is willingness to help student when you don't understand the concept. I email him my question and he asked me to go to his office for better explanation not during office hour. Please do not hesitate to take his class.
Giant in the Maths department. He is really good at explaining things and provide intuitions. His lecture notes are the best that I've ever seen. If you ask a question on Campuswire, you may get his reply alomost instantly. Detailed instructions, caring and helpful, recommended.
Professor Oveys was by far the best professor I had this semester. He is thorough with his lectures and wants you to learn. I don't really like math, but I enjoyed this course. 8 am's are usually a drag, but his class was worth it.
He is really helpful on and off the classroom. Cal 3 definitely isn't an easy class, but he is inspirational and makes the class flow well. Homeworks can be tricky, but as long as you follow on classes you should be alright. Really great professor with solid knowledge storage and clear logic, take him if you can.
For MFEI, there are 3 exams in total, weekly quizzes, several web assigns and problem sets. This may sound like a lot, but it is necessary for the understanding of this course. And for each category, only the first few top scores will count towards the total. His notes were clear and organized. If I get the chance, I'd like to take him again.
The course is hard but Dr. Oveys does his best to help out students and make it as easy as possible. He is a very caring guy and genuinely has a passion for the subject matter making him very willing and able to help students as much as he can.
Truly has a gift for teaching math. TAKE HIM!!!
This professor is awesome.
Take his course. He is a patient and very clear professor.
I recommend this professor to everyone. You will not regret it.
Professor Oveys is extremely helpful and willing to resolve any questions and concerns from students. He makes sure that everything is clear and organized. Choose him!
He is god. Take a look at his rating. I have never known that a rating can be 5.3/5, literally off the chart. Really cares about students and even gives extra simple quizzes to improve everyone's grades. Drop a lot of low grades. Just pick him if you see his name on the course you have to take. You will know how professional and kind he is.
do not listen to the reviews. although he is a very caring professor, the way he teaches is all over the place. he is always willing to help which is really good. honestly, I would recommend taking him but do not have high expectations as the reviews are saying. his tests are very hard but he will help you figure it out after. he is nice tho
If you have the opportunity to take his class then choose him. I cannot imagine a better math professor.
Professor Oveys is a very good teacher in a difficult subject. Despite me not getting a great grasp of the material, he was constantly there to help. He made sure that I did well enough to move onto Math for Econ 2 although it would've been very easy for him to give me below a C and make me retake the course. He is extremely helpful and caring.
This man is a bright ray of subshine on a rainy day. He is so passionate about math and it's apparent that he really wants everyone to understand and get excited about the material he's teaching. I've never written a rate my professor but this was an exception - I've been bad at math my whole life but he teaches in a way that is easy to understand.
Truly talented at teaching. Clearly cares about his students and will do everything he can to help you succeed in his class as well as actually understand the material.
Hesam is the best professor I've had so far at NYU and I usually hate math classes. He really cares about his students succeeding!
Best prof at NYU!! take him
Prof. Oveys is an absolutely exceptional math professor. His office hours are very helpful. His exams are fair, and consist of questions previously discussed in lecture. He usually writes the final, so style is very familiar. I felt that the course prepared me well for how to handle more complex, interesting problems as well.
Professor Oveys is very passionate about the material he is teaching, however the lectures and the problem sets that acted as homework did not match. The work is primarily about coding, but the lectures and tests are statistically based. He's a great guy, but the course was a little misrepresented.
He is definitely a perfect professor but his tests are harder than others.
Please choose Pro. Oveys's class if you can. His classes are structured, extremely clear, and funny! He will answer your questions immediately, and he also welcomes you to ask extra math problems which may not be in syllabus during his office hour. I will choose his math class with no doubt!! Please choose him for Math!!!
See the reviews, they aren't wrong. One of the best, most caring, and clear teachers I have ever had. Responds extremely fast outside of class for support, and the lectures are easy to follow and comprehend. If you have the opportunity to take his class, you are doing yourself a favor by enrolling.
Professor Oveys is such a nice guy, he records lectures, writes notes in front of you, and is an easy grader. You learn a lot, and can do well in class. 10/10 recommend
Prof. Oveys is absolutely the best professor at NYU. He is good at teaching and making students understand difficult concepts. He will respond to your emails or questions on websites on time. He gives many examples in class to help you understand the ideas.
The BEST math professor. period. Did not even take precalc in hs and I still managed to get an A in his class. I genuinely have never enjoyed math so much my life-- it was my favorite class last semester. The coding part may seem challenging at first but once you get used to it it's easy. If you are struggling, definitely show up to office hour.
Pretty easy for me. The professor explains everything clearly and at least twice. Attendance is not necessary and the quizzes are easy. Problem sets are sometimes challenging but I enjoyed it. Highly recommended!!
Take him! BEST professor ever in NYU!!!
AMAZING PROFESSOR!!! I despise Math, but I genuinely enjoyed his class. Lectures are very useful and clear. The quizzes and exams are very straightforward and are not made to trick students. He honestly made me consider taking Calc 2.
The best math professor I have ever had. He brought back my love for math, and it was because of the way he taught it in such an interesting and easy-to-understand way. He made Calculus easy to understand, and the fact he prioritized us actually understanding the concepts and not just the answers made Calculus an easier and more fun class for me.
Professor Oveys is by far the best math teacher I've ever had. He's a very thorough teacher, is open to students' questions, and is very accessible via email and Campuswire. I was never good at math, but I actually understood what I was learning in his lectures, and though there was a decent amount of homework it wasn't awful. 10/10 recommend.
Professor Oveys does a great job at making lectures easy to understand. The homework was a bit much but that's because summer classes are 6 weeks long. He made calculus easier than professors who taught full fall/spring semesters. He always makes sure you understand the concepts thoroughly and makes himself very accessible outside of class.
The reviews don't lie, literally the best professor. Class is set up so that it is easy to catch up if you start falling behind and he is very lenient. Problem sets were kind of a nightmare but that was the only thing that was hard.
Great professor!!!
Super clear lectures and straightforward tests. Exam questions are even discussed in class. He is funny and a lil sassy too. Take this class for CORE!
Great professor, everything is very straightforward. If you do homework and look at problems discussed during lectures you'll do good on exams and quizzes. In-class quizzes are announced in advance.
Amazing lectures. Generous grading, plug a big curve after the final.
Great professor, really knows what he's doing and his lectures are great. The best thing about him tho is that his notes are very neatly organized and easily accessible for when you are studying for exams.
He is overhyped on here. Decent at best, exercises in lecture are very easy compared to the homeworks and the exams.
Attendance was mandatory in recitation (through quizzes), but not the lecture (which was posted online). As someone who is decidedly not a STEM person, FDTD was very much catered to us, making it not nearly as painful as it could have been. Steep difficulty curve that hits in the 2nd half of sem, but I managed without studying Too much.
he is so kind, so nice, really care about students. Lecture always so clear and focused, the class material was really easy it's just basic stats concepts and you don't even need to bring a calculator or GDC. Class policy also nice, drop your lowest 3 quiz and 2 problem sets. You can always ask your questions online and he respond very quick!!
Hadn't taken a QR course in years. Professor Oveys organizes the course to make sure you never fall behind and have access to all of the material needed at all times. All of the problem formats that you will run into on exams and quizzes are covered in lectures. Best professor at NYU. Take his classes for QR credit!!
PROF OVEYS IS SUCH A KING. i was scared i wouldn't even pass this class at the beginning of the sem, but ended up with an A. all thanks to him
Amazing course if you aren't very good at math! The problem sets are a little bit of a pain but the weekly quizzes and exams are pretty easy. Professor drops the three lowest quizzes and two lowest problem sets (plus there are two surveys that you get an automatic 10/10 on if you do them) so it's not too hard to get a good grade in the course.
Such a good core class- take it! Drops 3/10 quizzes and 1/6 problem sets. Final was basically the 2 midterms thrown together, so very easy to do well if you study. He is super available outside of class hours and wants to help students succeed- could tell he loved teaching this class :)
I took this class in the summer when it was very fast paced. Professor Oveys made that harder by speaking really fast and expecting students to know exactly what he's saying without giving explanations. I had to rewatch most of the class recordings and also watch youtube videos to basically teach myself the content. Would not recommend.
Nice professor. Make the effort and you get an A.
This was a tough class and I don't think the professor made it more manageable.
Professor Oveys makes this QR course really manageable, even for non-STEM students. The class policy is generous - no calculator needed, and you can drop quizzes and problem sets. Unstuck ai was a big help for studying too.
It's honestly the content that is challenging but his exams are totally doable the problem sets are very challenging but he gives 2 weeks to do them so dont hold them off. Quizzes about every 3 classes total worth 20% of your grade so dont slack off. there will not really be a curve maybe 1% if any so dont rely on that
This professor is a GEM. I have been afraid of math all my life but Professor Oveys really made this course seem like a piece of cake. He grades you with 5 problem sets, 2 midterms, and 1 final. The final was basically a combination of both the midterms, so as long as you put work into this class and study, you should be good. Definitely pick him!!
His Great Ideas in Math class was great. Pretty interesting topics and made showing up to an 8am worth it. Total of ~11 quizzes, 6 problem sets, and 3 significant tests. He drops your 3 lowest quizzes, 1 lowest problem set, and (this semester, not sure about others) replaced your lowest midterm with your final exam grade. Definitely recommend.
Great professor. very accessible outside of class. wants people to do well and is very generous in grading. take for calc 3
Prof. Oveys is very very clear and organized. He explains everything step by step and thoroughly. He is kind of scary and his exams are hard so make sure you study for them early. Overall, a great professor and I recommend.
He made a math class so much less daunting for someone who doesn't like math! He is super clear and concise, so organized, drops 3 lowest quiz grades and lowest hw grade. Exams and quizzes are structured the same as problems done in class. Attendance is not mandatory and he records all the lectures. He makes the class really easy to do well in!
Might be one of the easiest courses I've taken at NYU. Professor Oveys is a great lecturer but there's no need to attend in person, as all of his lectures are recorded via Zoom. Super helpful outside of class if you email him. His pace is super slow with new material, which means that it is super easy to catch up! Take him! Easy A!
calc 3 is already hard enough, so take oveys to make your life easier! he is a great teacher, explains stuff super clearly. everything you see on the exam can be found in examples given in the class notes and taught during lecture.
I liked him a lot. He is very enthusiastic which made it easy to listen to him. Highly arrogant, he definitely gives all of his students funny looks if they ask a simple question. Calc is hard, but you can't get a much better math teacher than him.
Took his calc 2 class over the summer. His class is great, but I didn't put in much effort and got a B+.
Unnecessarily hard quizzes and tests. Will include random math that he didn't cover in class on exams and expect you to know it.
Professor Oveys is the best professor I've had at NYU. His passion for math and teaching shows, even at 8 am. He's always willing to help beyond office hours, offering both math help and career advice. After a few years away from school, I had all math and MFE 1 fundamentals forgotten, but with his help, I still enjoy MFE 2. Highly recommend.
arrogant and condescending when asked a question by a student. Makes you feel dumb for having an inquiry about something. He teaches as if you are supposed to know everything already and its just a review course or something. Not a bad teacher, but he is way too arrogant and discouraging to ever take again.
He is probably the best math professor I've ever had. MFEII is a hard class, but he really does his best to prepare you. My biggest piece of advice would be GO TO OFFICE HOURS. He is willing to help and wants you to get better. Definitely recommend!!
Expects extensive self teaching and assumes strong knowledge of complex concepts. Midterm was very difficult and unrealistic given the time limit. Even the TA, a master's student in quantitative finance, stated he could not finish the exam in time. Joke of a class, considering students are paying lots of money to only have GPT teach them...
Teaching wise, he does a good job in explaining concepts and making them easier. Does a bad job in preparing you for the midterm and finals though. Just tells you to study the quizzes and practice problems, but both midterm and finals, some of the questions on those exams never once were discussed nor appeared in problem sets. Not good.
Decent at explaining the concepts but does bad at preparing you for the exams. Always tells you to review the notes and practice set, yet on the finals nothing close to what we learned appeared. His 4.7/5 rating here is definitely not true. Even the TA mentioned how the midterm wasn't fair for many, the final was worse.
Very good at explaining concepts. Hard exams but similar to his lectures. I went to his office hours and he's really helpful. Big curve at the end. Don't take MFE if you have a busy semester. I spent 10 hours a week studying
The best math professor I've ever had in my life, period. I'd already taken AP Calculus in high school but Professor Oveys' style of lecturing engaged me without fail and helped me deepen my understanding of concepts I thought I'd already known well. He's the only rational choice if you're planning to take MFE I.
mid. exams r much harder than class notes and quizzes but keep emphasizing to use them to practice. expects us to have a very clear understanding of complex topics when thats not covered in the class. in class he's a good teacher but comes off a rude. good curve but still not good enough to account for the difficulty of exams - just alr
DO NOT TAKE. ME AND EVERYONE IN OUR RECITATION STRUGGLED. EVEN THE TA SAID THE EXAMS ARE BEYOND DIFFICULT. THERE'S NO WAY ALL THE 5/5 REVIEWS ARE ACTUAL PEOPLE
Oveys has a clear passion for maths and teaching but I'm not sure if he's the optimal choice for all students. Personally, I struggled with his methods despite studying and scored poorly on the exams. He definitely knows his stuff but he doesn't do the best at teaching them at all times. Also which TA you have matters in your weekly quiz grades.
You can take online course and read his notes, which covers everything. The practice example cover every single part of course so that even though you don't take class sometimes, you can also get very high score in exam. Homework is kind of heavy to be honest. In this course, you need to take time and do more practice.
tough grader b/c of the TAs & administrator. final was EXTREMELY hard but won't blame oveys b/c the test was made by administrator. wish he prepped us more for it though. weekly quizzes but is generous, allows us to drop the 3 lowest quizzes. pretty generous with end curve. homework felt unrelated though. records lectures and gives class notes.
Great professor, watch his lectures and go through the types of question in his homework quizzes and recitation sheets
so much harder than MFE1, oveys is fine as a professor but MFE2 in general is just a difficult class
difficulty of the tests is much higher than what is taught in class. Oveys' class also received less time for the midterm than other classes taught by other professors. He kept telling us to review from class notes and quizzes, which were not that helpful because they didnt rlly match the difficulty of the final
