He is so smart that he has a hard time breaking things down. Read the book
Poor communication skills
Hard to understand, boring
Taking him now, he sucks! (no calculators, notes, no sam midterms, HW everyda
Materia taught unclearly - Exams that require total und of subj he cant provide
OK...but goes too fast and cant speak clearly
no calcs, hard tests, mean-spirited, wants u to fail
mumbles. doesn't cover everything.tests hard.
DO NOT TAKE HIS CLASS EVER!!!!!!!!!
He is just a sucker. It seems he came to teach with personal intention. He wants everybody to fail. He is just wrong to be a teacher. Thanks for the F sucker. I aced both calc 1 and 2 but failed his because he is an id...
only take this class if you feel like listening to a man who cannot speak english, likes teaching history, and supposed to be teaching math. Does not know what an octagon is! what the f?
He sucks ... I used to hate Math before, i hate it even more now. Dont take him ... he's confusing and doesnt know what the **** he's saying.
He does not teach good. He seems to want to teach in his own style compared to what the book wants to teach. If you want a challenge take him otherwise find someone else.
Currently, I am failing his class. He is a horrible teacher, who seems to be a better wood carver than a teacher. Whatever you do, do not take this teacher. If you are in ROTC, get out of his class because he hates the military and those who are in it.
One of the two worst professors I ever had. I took him for finite math. I failed it with him. Then I took the class over with a different professor and got an A. I also got Bs in both calc 1 and calc 2. He can't speak english, and he doesn't care!!!!
Listen hard. Really hard. He has a hard time pronouncing numbers. Don't sit in front. He'll spit on you.
Horrible teacher. HARD. Doesn't care about students. WHAT EVER YOU DO, DO NOT TAKE THIS TEACHER!!!!
NEVERRRRRRRRRRR TAKE HIS CLASS....easy 'F' is what his class is! I am reapeating CAL3!! because of him..word of advice and only one word my friends DONT!
Most people didnt do well, but I still managed to get an A with big curve. Most scores are based on tests, but if you are good at tests, take him. He teaches pretty good in my opinion, a professor that you will prepare you later for Bus170, Bus20,etc.
Katsura=kermit + yoda. If you like to work really hard and then recieve a D and repeat a class again, then by all means take this guy. I highly reccomend Obaid(the guy not the girl).
anybody who refers to a parallelogram (or should i say pararrerogram) as a "squash box" needs to be taking an english class instead of teaching math. worst teacher ive ever had
He is one of the worst teachers I've had in my college life! He's tests are extremely difficult. He doesn't care about students. I failed his class, and I retook the class with another professor and got a B....
Very difficult, but you put the effort, it is NOT hard to pass his class. His class is very useful in preparing one for business courses His test very challenging, but he knows how to teach the material very well. Must pay attention and take good notes.
Extremely hard homework and exams. I don't usually have a problem with accents but his was bad, and his lectures were way too complex/unclear. I failed with him, then took another teacher and got a B!
Good teacher. Lots of homework. Likes to teach his own problem-solving methods which are good, but not in textbook so if you get lost or miss a class textbook is no help. Personally helpful to students, maintains a pleasant atmosphere in class.
clear in expaining!!! move quite fast so not wasting time!!!
Drop rate is 85%. You be the judge.
DON'T TAKE THIS TEACHER! He will fail you. His lectures move way too fast and are very unclear. The homework is impossible and the tests are made to confuse you.
Extremely difficult, tests are way, way, way too hard! Very stingy on partial credit. If you are an A student and want to get a B- , take him. Knows the subject well, knows all the tricks of math, has harsh accent, but extremely hard.
Hard, but I think the subject material would be difficult with any teacher. He speeds through lecture problems, making it hard to keep up. Promptly hands back tests and homeworks the next class period. His accent isn't THAT bad.
Very hard to understand because of his heavy accent. He doesn't help anyone. He completely screws up any understanding of basic math you have.
Very good at math. Very hard to hear past his accent. If you try hard enough, you will pass the class with an A just like I did, and you will actually know the material.
He is brutal. Worst teacher I ever had!! If Katsuura taught all of your classes in your college career, you'd never graduate! Very bad accent!
This teacher is very hard to understand and very hard on you. I did some homework in his class, and got everthing right. I got a D on it bc I didnt include equal signs in my work for 3 problems. this guy is an ****
hard to understand, doesn't teach with the book, it very anal about everything. I would do better just learning through the book myself. Worst teacher ever
One of the worst teachers/professors i've ever had. Most of my class is failing his course now. We're drowning and there's nothing we can do about it now. Save yourself, don't take him for any class unless you want to waste a semester.
he is a big time jerk. he will make you feel stupid in his class if you don't know the answer to a question. REALLY HARD just because he want to be, and DO NOT TAKE HIM unless you want to fail!!! I REPEAT DON'T TAKE HIM.
The WORST teacher i had ever had. Stay away from him. He loves to fail people
If you have hair, he will make you tear out your own hair from frustration. I had a 3.0 and I'm going to fail. No calculators and no cheat sheet on notes on tests make it impossible to pass without a photographic memory. You be the judge.
Well, most my class is failing, and half just gave up and stopped coming to class. We are all drowning in his class and there's nothing we can do about it. Take this professor if you would like to drop your GPA.
DO NOT TAKE UNLESS YOU WANT TO FAIL!!!! STUDENTS HAVE A LOT OF NEGATIVE THINGS TO SAY ABOUT HIM. THE SITE KEEPS DELETEING EVERYONE COMMENTS ABOUT HIM. DO NOT TRUST THE SIMLIY FACES, THEY CAN BE QUITE DECIVING.
Where can I began? He set me back a whole semester and ruined my college career. You'll do fine in his class if you don't make a mistake at all period. He is a math god! He can stupify you with his ability to solve any math question stone cold. ONly problem, he expects you to do the same.
Tougher than leather!! DO NOT TAKE HIS CLASS! I busted my ass studying for the exams and final, and he throws questions out of the sky, not from the text or dittos. He doesn't teach from the book, so it's useless. Miss one class, and you're screwed. 50% off for lil mistakes on homework. It's insane!
I really liked him. I loved his passion for the class and his willingness to help. He is extremely polite and I thought taught the class very well!!
He is horrible. His grading doesn't make sense and he is not helpfull at all. Almost noone does well in his class. In our class the curve was so bad that 30% was a D, and people still failed.
Hard to understand what he is talking about and his tests are like wow... super hard. I studied my ass off and I still faild my first mid-term. His grading sucks, no organization...
He'll straight up wail on you fool!!
THE worst teacher I've ever had at SJSU. Avoid taking his class unless: 1. You enjoy a low GPA and grades of F 2. You have absolutely no other choice. 3. You are out of your mind
This teacher is extremely difficult to understand for two reasons: 1) the subject is difficult and he doesn't know how to break complex ideas down into easier forms for clearer understanding 2) he has a very thick accent. I got a C+, but really my final grade was around a 50%.
AHHH! I have never had to work so hard in math in my life! Hint, do all homework, check it over several times because he has a certain format for every problem and WILL take off points if you don't follow it. Total points homework :100, Midterms:200, final:175
This professor is awful. It makes you wonder how he is able to keep his job at SJSU. His grading is ridiculous; I got 2 points marked off for not putting an EQUAL sign. Yes, people, this guy is crazy. Moreover, his tests are VERY difficult. And he isn't very helpful.
I realy liked this prof...he was funny and seemed to really like teaching this class.
Do not take this class with this teacher. He has a bad accent, grades unfair, and makes up his test out of no where. You must do things how he teaches or the answer is wrong. The tests are over 100 pts, but only like 7 questions. DO NOT TAKE HIM!!! yOU WILL REGRET IT.
Rediculously Difficult. Nothing but absolute perfection gets credit in his class. The slightest error in a test problem gets you half credit or worse. Katsuura does not seem to realize that diff eq is not an easy subject and he teaches like we've all been through it before. An obviously intelligent man, but a horrible teacher.
Hail Katsuura!! We're not worthy! We're not worthy! Euler wouldn't be worthy!!!!!!!!!!!!
HE IS A HORRIBLE PROFESSOR. HE CANNOT TEACH FOR S**T AND HIS EXAMS ARE EXTREMELY HARD. HE DOESNT REALLY HELP YOU AND FOR HW HE ASSIGNS A MILLION PROBLEMS AND ONLY CORRECTS 2. I WOULD DEFINITELY NOT RECOMMEND THIS PROFESSOR TO ANYBODY, IF U ALREAREADY ENROLLED IN HIS CLASS DROP ASAP.
He's a terrible teacher and is quite difficult. I didn't learn very much. He insults you when you approach him for help. He doesn't try to understand WHY you are making a certain mistake and try to help you using that method. He has trouble breaking things down into simple terms.
DO NOT TAKE ANY CLASS WITH THIS GUY!IF YOU DO YOU WANT A BAD GRADE.ONE OF THE WORST TEACHERS ON THE PLANET IN MY OPINION!HE PUTS PEOPLE DOWN IN FRONT OF THE WHOLE CLASS FOR GETTING BAD GRADES, EXAMS R HARD,DOESN'T WANT TO HELP&IS THE MOST CONFUSING LECTURER...HE SUCKS!HE HAS A HARD TO UNDERSTAND ACCENT TOO.I HAVE NO IDEA HOW ELSE TO WARN YOU GUYS.
Plain and simple : THE WORST TEACHER I HAVE EVER HAD!!! DO NOT TAKE ANY COURSE WITH THIS IDIOTIC TEACHER!!! WARNING!!!
His tests are extremely difficult and is not recommended! I missed one minus sign on a 1 page answer and got a D for that problem! He'll help you out during his office hours but even with all that help, you may still have difficulties if you're not already a math genius.
He has to be the most unhelpful teacher I've ever had. He has no idea the status of his book for his class (update versions, old copies, etc) he constantly is saying to ignore what is in the book and do it his way, but then is unclear in explaining how to do things. Do not take him unless you are a genius already...
horrible. you will regret signing up for his class. take anyone else!!!
very HARD!!!! i only got stuck with this teacher because there was no one left. avoid him, no joke
I am getting a B+ in the class but I will highly suggest everybody not to take his class. He is so not clear in any of the topics that it is not a joke. The main problem is that he teaches at a 100 miles an hour.
Horrible teacher. Tests are extremely difficult and has an understable accent. Some homework assigned but be sure to study for the exams.
He is a horrible teacher. doesn't explain any thing and hard to understand at times with his accent. test are ****in hard and gives a**** load of homework.
STAY AWAY if you don't want ot fail. class is extremely difficult. u basically need to learn everything on your own. not recommended unless you are a math genuis.
Available during office hours to help you learn, but it didn't help. This was seriously the hardest class I've ever taken. Material sucks and he doesn't make it any easier. If you have to take his class you should get a math tutor, and start praying to your higher power.
Incredibly difficult. Barely passed with a C and people consider me to be a math genius. Difficult to understand. Very strict on work and will doc heavily for minor errors. Hav to do a lot of outside work to understand all material. If u hav to take him, do all the homework or else u'll be screwed for the tests and don't ever miss class.
This class was extremely difficult. I made the mistake of not checking this site before signing up for the class, which I really wish I could take back! I passed, but it took a lot of study time. I've always done really well in math, but I've never been so happy to get a C in my life!
Everything that was said above is correct. I've always been great at math and I'll be getting a C in the class. Here's some statistics on midterm 2, which he announced to the class: out of two classes 4 people recieved an A, 10 recieved a B, 10 recieved a C, and 43 recieved either a D or an F. This was after the curve! Good luck!
This is by far the worst teacher i had at sjsu. He is very mean and his tests are extremely hard. I studied like crazy and was getting 17/100 on the tests. I wish i had dropped this class in time. Eventually, half the class stops going because they know they are going to fail. If you want to lower your gpa, take this class. Trust me, dont tak
Better than you, better than me, better than Euler! Taylor, Maclaurin & Newton would get a 'B-' if they take Katsuura. Euler might get a 'B+' with a curve. Katsuura or diffesurra as we so belovedly call him!! King of math, God of Gods, all hail the God of Kings and bow down and get ready to be beaten down. We're not worth!! We're not worthy!!
Don't bother taking Katsurra. He's by far my hardest teacher so far in SJSU and he will kill you during the semester. He explains his own strategies and he never follows the book. It's hard too because I would never understand anything he says and his complicated theories. Don't take him!!
I am an amazing student with wonderful grades. This class is by far the hardest class i have taken at SJSU! Katsuura gave me a C- in his course knowing i am a bussiness major that has to recieve a C or higher to pass. I NEVER missed one class and did ALL of the assigned homework, which we got EVERY class! DO NOT DO NOT DO NOT take this teacher!!!!
This guy go's way too fast. He doesn't teach the way the book explains things, so good luck trying to go back on your own to study. I left his class frustrated everyday.
I do not think it is a coincidence that when you look at this site all the upper math kids like him and all finite kids do not. I think the problem with him is that he is a freaking genius at math and is used to really smart math kids because he teachers calculus III as well. He HELLA hard, I failed his class, ruined my first semester, he just need
Prof. Katsuura is by no means, easy, but he enjoys teaching the material. If you ask questions, particularly on material you don't understand, he will try hard to help you understand it. As with any professor, you need to go to class, and do the homework to do well in his class.
DON’T TAKE THIS TEACHER. Two things up front: He doesn’t use or follow the book except to issue home work; and He is fast, does a section a period, and he doesn’t slow down for anything/one. He also doesn’t budge when it comes to policy. He is somewhat rude too. As a graduated, and as an instructor myself, I suggest you find another teacher.
I went to every class actually trying to learn the material leaving with at least 3 pages of notes and completed all homework!!!Hes way to fast and has an accent. You never use the book for learning because he calls it dumb and teaches his own way, not to mention the times that "God told him"!Good luck and hope ur a genius!
You will fail this class for sure. My first exam i got a 17/100 and my smart friend got a 31/100. Half the class stopped showing up midway through the semester. He usually gives about 30 h.w. problems to do and will choose 2 to grade. Usually, i didn't get credit for any of the problems. And this is coming from a guy who got a 3.84 GPA in H.S.
Says the book is stupid. He treats you like you are a moron. No calculators in his class. Tests are hard. He says they are straightforward but they are not. He says don't memorize, but he doesn't really teach you a process to do problems. He is really approachable during office hours and is genuinly a good guy but try not to take him.
I suggest to anyone who take his class: take all the notes you can, practice the math problems, form study groups with people in your class, and go to his office if you have any problem with the work the day you do have the problem. I those four things will help you very much.
This guys really sucks. DO NOT TAKE HIS CLASS. He is such a moron, he tells us not to read the book but still understand the material. I don't know what he's thinkin but you have to be complete idiot to tell your students that. Well if you have him for any class, don't take him. His accent is confusing... well everything about him is confusing.
this guy sucks. its ironic how he wants you yo be all perfect on his test but when hes teaching you new material he makes mistakes and the students are always correcting him. just avoid this teacher if u dont want a bad college experience. on and one more thing 65% of the class are failing.
The ratings thus far are really skewed in my opinion. His class is not easy, but if you make the effort you will learn a lot from him, more than from most teachers. He's very good. If you want to actually LEARN math, he is a good professor. If you just want to skim by with no effort, then he's your worst nightmare.
This was one of the worst teacher i had. He did not help you tht much whe u asked for it. He was very hard to understand, because of his accent. Then when you have to turn in your homework he makes you do it the exact way he wants to do it or else u dont get credit. You have to show all your work in the class.
This guy will rip you a new one. IF you think you are a Math genius you may get a B- tops. You miss one parenthesis and you get 4/10. That's an D! Does not matter if 99% of the problem is right! you will still get a 4/10. You can learn a lot from him, he is a genius. Anyone who claims to get an A in his classes is a liar. No freebies here!!!!!!
This is the type of instructor to dread taking. He completely ignores student questions when asking for clarification and spends 95% of the time lecturing while facing the whiteboard. Avoid at all costs.
worst teacher I have ever had at this SJSU. He knows his material but would rather move on then to clarify his reasoning. His grading is hard and must have the homework perfect or else he deducts point dramatically. I advise never to take his class. No matter what!
Worst teacher at SJSU. Very bad grader. He wont read any proof if he doesn't like the first line. Even though his English is pretty bad but he expects students to be a maestro in it !
The worst teacher i have had in my life. He thinks he knows everything and barely even uses the book. His grading is nearly impossible and going to talk to him about it doesnt help anything. I strongly advise anyone who is reading this not to take him!
BEST TEACHER EVER! EASY GRADING!
Terrible teacher, I tired soo hard in that class and got nothing. His grading is SOO BAD, not a fair teacher. like what everyone has said,DONT get him. o yea he can't speak English at all, but expects you to and marks you down if you don't. so yea DONT GET HIM!
Professor is so so so so bad at teaching, I have no idea why the school still keeps this professor.
He expects nothing but perfection. Anything slightly below perfection; that is, one parenthesis short.. will get a ''D''. He is a genius!! This is only class that I did bad in all undergrad.. He is insane!!
This professor is not at all bad as you may seem in the other reviews. He teaches all that he knows and if you listen to him carefully he always give you logic behind every step. Helps like anything in office hours and really want to improve your maths.Go take him and he never wants anyone to fail.
HARD class to pass. After failing him and repeating the course, you'll find out his teaching methods are actually easier to understand than other professors. Just take ALL the notes, then fail, but it's almost a guaranteed pass if you use his notes with other professors!!!
I took his math 70 last spring. He isnt a horrible teacher like u all said. His teaching method is just "unique". I am sure u will learn if you listen carefully behind his logics.
If you have to take Math 70 at San Jose State, don't take it with Mr. Katsuura. In my class more than half the class has either dropped, or just decided to take a F. He often gives homework, and when we come back to ask him questions about the problems he can't figure it out, or he says he assigned us that problem by mistake.
Worst teacher at SJSU. Took him spring 07, dropped the class with a W, took the same class, different teacher, coming out with most likely an A. Cannot understand this guy. Horrible with helping. Does not answer questions. Does not explain anything clearly. STAY AWAY!
horrible lecturer. does not teach from the book at all. he needs to have his own book to explain his lesson plan further but he doesn't do so. he hardly makes time for students in office hours unless they're independent studiers. he has dumb pop quizzes and doesn't really grade hw. goes by too fast. the list goes on...
He's a smart guy and you can tell he knows the material well but he's difficult to understand. He goes through the material really fast and doesn't explain it very well. Teaches by doing a bunch of example problems. A ton of HW every night, pop quizzes almost every day, 3 exams. If math isn't a strong subject for you, don't take this professor.
This is an extremely brillant mathematician. He is trained as a topologist. He has great insight into the structure of abstract mathematics and wants to pass it on to his students who are capable of understanding the material. It was a pleasure to have him as one of my professors. He has motivated me to go on to graduate school in mathematics.
this guy is ok but not great if you really want to pass his class i recomend that you get another guy but if you want to fail you can have it my friends and i had to suck up and go to his office hours daily..it isn't a good sign when a student has to go to him all the time for help at everysingle office hours i should be able to do this by myself.
He basically only believes in his way of teaching the material. Seemed ok at first, but I was wrong. I went to class and still didn't understand the material because he goes at his own pace. No easy A, and even if you try hard, don't get your hopes up for an A either.
Not very good.
I am currently dropping Mr Katsuura's class with a W. He is a nice and handsome man, but his teaching is poor. His class interfered w/all other classes-There goes my 3.8 gpa! Daily quizzes, difficult test, poor explanations, HOURS of tedious and randomly collected daily hw, very picky, not allowed to use book-methods. I Only slept 2-4 hrs per night
DO NOT TAKE HIS CLASS EVER PERIOD IF YOU ARE INTERESTED IN LEARNING.WHO HIRED THIS INCOMPETENT NON-TEACHING S.O.B THIS GUY SHOULD BE FIRED AND SHUNNED FROM SAN JOSE STATE UNIVERSITY OR ANY SCHOOL FOR THAT MATTER...HE IS A TEACHER BY TITLE BUT HE TEACHES NOTHING AND EXPECTS YOU TO UNDERSTAND..SOMEBODY SHOULD SIT IN ON THIS GUY AND REPORT HIM
don't take him
He is a very difficult grader and very precise on how he wants you to hand in proof. If you have a question, he is helpful in giving you hints, however, he won't just solve the problem for you. I would recommend taking another teacher, albeit I really enjoyed his lectures.
I got an A from this class! Woot!! If I can do it, you can do it also. However, avoid him like the plague if you don't want to *really* put in effort learning the subject.
If u have to take this class, just make sure that u don't miss any class and any inclass quiz! The beginning of the sem is when he'll bomb u with most of the quizzes but u'll be fine IF u do the hw (not collected). U need to come up w questions to ask on review days. 2mids 1final, curved based on the result from class. Avoid if can but I did great!
gives nice curves since most people fail his class.. as long as you keep up your work it should be fine.
Excellent teacher. All those negative comments are from people who don't care to try and hope for an easy A. All you have to do is do the homework. Quizzes and Midterms have similar problems taken from homework. Take him if you aren't lazy and have half a brain.
Terrible Teacher. Basically talks to himself while staring at the board. Has somewhat of an accent. Shows up and writes on the board then leaves. Quiz's every week!
Dr. Katsuura is an excellent teacher if you want to learn the material and willing to work hard to learn the material. He is extremely helpful; what else can you expect out of a teacher if you are a serious student? If you want to just to get a free passing grade. His classes are not for you.
Talks to himslef at the board. Hard to understand at times. Does not slow down for any students, just shows up and teaches.
excellent professor! ignore all the negative comments, for all those students are aiming for is an easy A. If you want to learn and is willing to do the homework assigned each class then for sure you will earn that A. All test questions are EXTREMELY SIMILAR to homework. Its college, you have to work for your grade.
Basic calculus skills from previous calc class helped me out; his stuff is on a harder level. He has a quiz every class period so don't miss a class b/c all the quizzes add up to a 100pt exam. There's 2 Midterms. Even though the hw is never turned in, I highly recommend you do it for practice. His notes don't help much, you have to teach yourself
Don't take him! He is extremely confusing, so I taught myself from the textbook. Attendance and homework is not mandatory, the only reason to attend class is because there is a quiz almost everyday and they cannot be made up. Grade is based on 10 quizzes, 2 midterms, and final. Exams were nearly impossible with questions never seen in the textbook.
Teacher is very hard to understand. Homework is not collected, although he does give you practice problems to work on. He gives daily quizzes. Tests are very difficult. Concepts are also very hard to understand. Dont take this class @ 7:30 in the morning.
Quizzes every class. Homework counts for nothing. Midterms were very difficult. Final was impossible. Doesnt curve. Forget about it
Very cute professor but he is the hardest teacher EVER!! i never failed a class in my life and he was the first person to fail me. Inconsistent test and his final is almost impossible to pass
Professor Katsuura is not really a hard teacher for math 32. The midterms are hard, but if you do the homework and go to class you will understand the work. The final in now impossible at the end of the semester and he is very excited to come to class and teacher. He is not easy but you can get a good grade in his class. You just need to work.
Good lecturer and answers all questions. Very consistent with quizzes and tests, so study beforehand. Study all previous quizzes and homework to ace tests.
QUIZZES ARE MOST BULLSHIT THINGS EVER. EVERY SINGLE CLASS HE GIVES A QUIZ. FKIN ANNOYING
Amazing professor. His tests are exactly what he writes on the board. Like copy paste. He's always ready to solve any problem, and he helps you visualize the subject. Best math professor I've take yet.
Do NOT take him. Even if you try, he will not help you. I asked many times for him to do some complicated hw probs on the board and he not only did them wrong, he either couldn't figure out how or didn't care to fix his mistakes. There is no point in paying this guy to teach, because you will end up doing it yourself. Take someone else. Seriously.
Please do not take him. I barely passed calc 3... never lot lower than A in my math classes. DO NOT TAKE HIM............
WORST/HARDEST CLASS EVER! Homework DOES NOT count for squat and he has an accent that makes him nearly incomprehensible. He is a professor who feels that because he knows what he is talking about everyone else does as well. NOT AN EASY A! NOT EVEN AN EASY C!! AVOID AT ALL COSTS!
He is okay teacher. Quizes in every class. midterm is mostly the quizes problem and graphing. He tells in class what graph part is important and he shows the example. So just do that part and you will be good. I suggest to take him if you can come to class daily and can study all his quizes and important questions he tells in class
very difficult teacher. there are a lot of quizzes at first and the total number of quizzes is 11 and he drops the lowest one. his tests r pretty hard he does have a big curve bc they are so hard. final wasnt to bad but i did study my butt off for a week. lots of graphing and he doesnt explain it all that well. very smart guy and likes to teach tho
Professor Katsuura is a brilliant teacher who loves his job very much. However, the midterms and final are extremely difficult. Bring your questions from the homework because he will do them on the board if you ask.
Katsuura is an excellent prof. His accent is not THAT bad; at worst, it'll take a week to get used to. His quizzes, exams pretty much copy-paste from the problems he does in class, so take notes and ask questions. Also, do the HW: I got lazy near the end and ended up with a B- (although that's probably due to his generous curving).
By far the worst math teacher I have ever had. His class is incredibly hard and most students fail thats why he sets the curve so low (55%=C) Even with that over half the class still fails. Do not take even as a last resort
This man is one of the worst professors I have ever taken. If you take this professor just know that your entire grade is based of off exams and short quizes. 2 midterms, 11 quizes, and one final. Midters and quizes(10/11 of them) are 100 points, and the finals 150. He also makes a six figure salary, he really can care less about the students.
I suggest all of you to not take this class! There is a quiz in every class...quizzes are tough! Hard to get 10/10 on those. His midterms are super tough...You cannot slack in his class. Need to come in everyday and take GOOD NOTES. Wouldnt suggest his class at all.
I wouldn't suggest taking him. He is very passionate about Math, but with this passion comes strictness in his tests and work. He redefines the whole calculus using Vectors, which isnt bad. Class average = 40%... Very hard class. I barely passed. He also has a japanese accent. No doubt though I did learn in his class
One of the worst teachers I have ever had. By worst I mean super hard, there is a quiz in every class meetings and 3 tests that are extremely hard. I recommend not taking him if you cant learn on your own.
easy/good professor. homework is not graded/collected but i suggest you do it. helpful in office hours...he cares about students if they make an effort. his quizzes are easy, just about concepts and midterms/final are not hard either. final is just rewording the midterm problems. tells you sometimes what problems will be on the test during lecture
easy professor. helpful during office hours and cares about students. quizzes are simple and midterms are based on the quizzes. final was basically similar midterm problems. not a hard teacher at all...put in a decent amount of work and effort and you'll get an A+ like i did
Worst professor I've ever had. He is unclear and very confusing. He likes to talk about his dumb stories about the space and astronomy which does not relate to the topic at hand. He also throws a lot of curve balls at you during the midterm making you have you fully understand the material.
Doesn't like teaching from the book yet assigns hw from the book which he doesn't collect. Quizzes given one or twice a week throughout the semester. Midterms questions can be related to quizzes but are worded completely differently. Overall I'm 100% I have to retake the class after taking the final. Would not recommend taking him.
At first I thought he was a bad teacher because I was unable to do good on quizzes. First exam I got back was a 26% and I wanted to drop ASAP. However I started doing the no mandatory hw and paying more attention in class, along with forming study groups and I ended up passing the class. He curves alot which is helpful but he is a hard teacher.
The only upside with him is that he loves math. Other than that, he'll spend his time lecturing and go off on tangents and he'll spend time either complaining about the book or talking about his idol, Aristarchus. His grade curve is drastic though, I got a B with a 67% or so.
This guy sucks at teaching Business Cal. I have never taking Cal ever and I am failing pretty bad. He gives you a quiz every week and sometimes he does not teach half of the stuff on the quiz and Exam. Try no to take him and if you do. Goodluck
Can be hard to keep up with. Has quizzes almost every class but sometimes doesn't so you have to go every day to know. Doesn't have HW so grades are solely on tests and quizzes. Responds to emails rather quickly and very open to questions. Wide grading scale 85-100 is an A but my class average is about C
Your grade is based solely on quizzes and midterms, HW is not mandatory but you'll most likely fail if you dont do it. Did I mention quizzes? Pop quiz almost every class so come to class everyday. Brilliant professor but quite difficult to understand.
He's a very smart guy that's really enthusiastic about the material, but he's not very good at teaching. His lectures aren't structured well and he tends to ramble on about things that you won't find on the homework or daily quizzes. Teaches new concepts like he's reviewing them. The ridiculous curve is the only reason anyone can pass
Lectures are disorganized. Quizzes are on every class day except for midterms. Midterms are extremely difficult. Final is more difficult than the midterms. Curve is extremely ridiculous. He makes this class much harder as it should not be. Heed my warnings because he costed me another semester. DO NOT take him, DROP any of his course if you can.
Advice: Come to class every day to see what is taught, learn from the book and do hwk, and come to the next class meeting and expect a quiz on what you just learned. This way, you'll get at least a C+.
The WORST professor I have ever had at SJSU. His teaching methods are very unclear and he's very unhelpful. He only teaches to get paid. Quizzes are practically every week. The exams are SUPER hard. He expects you to remember what you learned in your previous calculus classes and does not review the material. Just awful. Avoid his class at all cost
He is by far one of the hardest math teachers i have ever had. His whole class is only based off of his quizzes and tests. Homework is optional, but word of advice: do it. We had quizzes every week based off the homework. I did not do the hw in the first half of class, and it made me work extra hard on the other half, only to get a C-.
VERY funny guy. Always smiling and making jokes. I would recommend going to his class if you're not enrolled in it. He's not very helpful with the academics but he'll cheer you up on a bad day. His tests are textbook based but he won't help explain any of it.
Disclaimer: I'm terrible at math, but he didn't do much to help. HW was optional but you should do it if you want to understand what's going on. He skips a lot of the content in the book and wants you to do things his way. If you ask him a question be prepared to give a problem from the book; doesn't answer fundamental questions. Quiz every week.
This is the perfect example of a college class. Nobody is watching over you and worrying if you pass or fail or not other than yourself. Take this class seriously just like any other class, do your homework, go to class, ask questions, and this class ain't even bad ya dig? Only reason I got a B+ was because I was slacking first half of the semester
Pros: 1) Helpful if you show interest 2) Grades quickly 3) Homework is not mandatory, do what you need 4) Hilarious, sarcastic sense of humor 5) Genuinely cares about his student Cons: 1) If you have a hard time with Asian accents, good luck 2) Grades fairly harshly 3) YOU MUST SHOW UP TO CLASS. His methods are different than the book.
I knew the basic knowledge about Calc but Katsuura is a crazy guy. He always goes over things fast, talks to the board and doesn't collect homework or provides any gradebooster. I tried hard, attended every lecture but he still failed me w a C- He teaches the easy parts and gives the super difficult parts on quizzes and tests. What a troll...
You must go to class. It is his way or the highway and he does not follow the book at all. He will tell you that a topic will not be on the test, only to find out on test day that it is there, so do not believe him. Don't even think about using a graphing calculator in this class because he hardly allows a scientific one. Tests were very hard

Don't even think about using a graphing calculator in this class because he hardly allows a scientific one. Tests were very hard, luckily he curves, even then, 13 of the class got below 35%
Horrific grading standards. He grades tests such that the simplest mistake will knock you down a full letter grade right off the bat. This is pretty ironic considering his lectures are filled with mistakes and very rushed. I received "A" letter grades in all 3 of calc series, as well as diff eq's. My grade in this class was a C. AVOID
Avoid this teacher. the whole class is based off quiz scores and midterms. he's a tough grader and it doesn't help that the test are already hard.
Do not take this class with this professor. Having a bit of a background in math, I can tell that this professor knows the material. However, the way he presents it is atrocious. Offers zero help during office hours and makes you feel bad for even asking for help. Do not take with him unless you have previous understanding of calculus basics.
Very good structure and organisation of class. He also explained very clear in every single steps, follow the steps, then it is an easy A for you. Textbook examples are more important than hw, they represent every question type in hw. He is also very helpful, he wrote a recommendation letter after the semester, I am happy to take his course.
Katsuura gives confusing lectures and difficult quizzes every week. Test are very difficult and if you try to ask for help he won't offer any and will make you feel bad for even asking. Refuses to give clear material to study, unless you have a previous background in Calc or are good at teaching yourself you probably won't pass. AVOID
If you haven't taken Calculus before, this class is tough. Look into tutoring along with workshop class. He isn't very clear because he expects you too know what he's talking about. However, if you go to his office hours to ask about your grade, he's really nice about.
DO NOT TAKE THIS TEACHER. HARD QUIZZES EVERY WEEK. HARD GRADER. DOESNT KNOW HOW TO TEACH. GRADE IS DEPENDENT ON MIDTERMS AND QUIZZES.
Katsuura's exams are not that bad ... but guys he is really helpful. Go to his office hours he is great to chat with. Study for his class and you should be fine.
Good lecturer but can be a bit unclear sometimes. Extremely helpful in office hours. Steps correct answer Gives class a textbook he made(as ebook). Pay attention to lectures and do all problems in the section. If you have any problem, office hours ASAP. You do not want to get left behind. Test problems are about as hard as HW problems are.
You do not have to do any of the homework, but it's at your own risk. I believe he grades his quizzes and tests fairly, though it can be vague if you want to find out where you went wrong on a problem. He is somewhat strict on how to show your work. I feel he could answer questions better, but at the same time not many were asked during class.
I took this class in spring 2016. It's not that hard as others are saying. His tests are exactly what we been practiced in class. If you pay attention in class you will pass.
This class is so stressful with him. The material is easy, but the way he wants it is difficult. Tests were convoluted. Expect lots of quizzes. He likes to go fast.
Tough tests, hard to understand in lectures as he doesn't really go in depth what the textbook says, and uses his own terminologies and methods. He doesn't assign homework, but there are pop quizzes almost every week so you are forced to go to class. Doesn't let you make up or retake quizzes or tests either. No extra credit available.
Hard class but if you go to office hours and review your quizzes before tests you'l be fine. There are "pop quizzes" that are essentially once a week and your lowest quiz score is dropped. HW is optional and not graded, but I highly recommend you do it. Your grade is determined by quizzes, 2 midterms, and the final.

Theres no homework. However, he provides supplementary problems from the textbook to practice on-its just not graded. There are quizzes once a week cosisting of one problem. The quizzes and tests arent that hard. He shows you how he wants you to do it and provides plenty of examples in lecture. Hes also very passionate about the subject.
Katsuura is the kind of guy that makes the class really hard, but regardless of your grade, you can't hate him. He will make sure you get the point of the lesson and concept, and that you are understanding why you are getting the grade you get. He doesn't give any extra credit, but curves all his tests. One 1 question quiz per week.
There are quizzes once a week and quiz scores are worth as much as one exam. His lectures only cover certain aspects of the section in his textbook, so read the book and do as many problems as possible. Go to office hours if you have a question. You need a 48% to pass but most of the people in class are in the D or C range for just the quizzes.
Katsuura is pretty hard to understand in class b/c of his Japanese accent & b/c he goes extremely fast in his lectures. He's very methodical in his grading and clearly expects a few things that aren't technically necessary in math. Don't necessarily have to go to class if you're OK with missing a couple pop quizzes and can read up on your own.
hard to understand, boring...
Great lectures and step-by-step explanations, but takes off points for writing answers in way he doesn't like. Doesn't assign HW from $15 textbook (which he wrote), but gives random quizzes based on HW. My advice: do the problems in his textbook, ask questions about it at start of class (he's open to that) or office hours. He's strict, but friendly
This was a tough class for me. I wish Id gone to office hours more. Students who did that seemed to do better.
Worst professor ever. Its hard to understand and not one part of the class is he teaching anything all he does are random problems without explaination.
completely unhelpful on purpose
He's the worst professor I've ever had. He does random problems during lecture and doesn't explain them. He won't tell you the grade you have the entire semester and he's so specific on what he wants on exams and he'll take off a lot of points if you don't write it the exact way he wants.
He is very picky when it comes to the way you format things on a quiz/test. (He will dock off points) Majority of his lectures doesn't make sense, since he just does random problems from the textbook without explaining how he got the answer. He overcomplicates the problems, so you'll end up even more confused after his lectures.
MATH 30! He is very picky on quizzes/exams (will dock). His lectures consist of practice problems from textbook. He just jumps into the lesson without context, very confusing. He skips too many steps when demonstrating.3 exams, quizzes every week (makes up midterm), and final. Homework is not required. I am an A student for math. Not with him!!
Super picky and grades tests/quizzes if you don't format it the way he teaches it. Which is why you have to go to class to learn the way he teaches them so you can get a least a decent grade on the quizzes and exams. But either way his teaching is horrible. Take any other professor
Do not skip class. Even though things are in his textbook, he writes some wrong and corrects in class. If you read only the book and take the test, you will get wrong answers. He cares for teaching and still updates his lectures. Dont use internet to do homework. Try to think by yourself first. HW really helps in exams.
Very picky when it comes to grading, if you dont do it his way (even if easier methods are available), he'll fail youi. Doesn't assign homework and your grade soley depends on pop quizzes and tests/Final. Available for office ours (During covid this would be before or after class, would also have designated slot for office too).
Worst math teacher ever.
Hard to understand and follow.
This was the worst professor id ever taken out of any educator in my academic career. He not only advised I drop the class after not submitting an exam properly but also said id probably fail after it (this was the first exam of the year). He is a terrible teacher and does not make you feel comfortable doing so much as asking questions. Terrible.
You know something is wrong when half the class failed the midterm. Terrible professor.
The teacher does not care about his students. He has decided that he is not going to explain how to do problems, and grades like someone is trying to get their masters in Calculus. Unless you love Math, I would highly recommend not taking this guy for Math 71.
Worst math class ever. Does not know how to teach well and gets mad if you ask questions
This professor does not want his students to succeed. You will receive a 0 on your answer if one part is incorrect. His grading is ridiculous, and he wants you to fail. DO NOT TAKE HIS CLASS!!!!!!!!
Don't take this class, that's all I gotta say.
Why would SJSU hire such a terrible professor? He wants us to do quizzes and tests his way or else he'll fail you. He grades harshly and doesn't know how to explain problems well, and when you ask him questions he gets mad. He gives us quizzes every week and most of the time, we don't know what it's about. If you have him I suggest dropping.
This guy doesn't know how to teach. He gives you a 0 if you don't do it his way, but he changes his way every class. Doesn't give you enough time to submit your answers online, and isn't flexible at all.
Terrible.
If get this professor take my advice and drop his class within the easy drop period. I tried to stick it out through the whole semester, but I absolutely hated this class. He gives homework, but it isn't graded, his lectures are pretty much garbage and he gives quizzes every week on every other week. Plus he only gives you 10 min to do the quizzes.
I cry everyday being in this class with this professor.
This man shows no compassion toward his students. He drifts off the textbook and teach his own point of view, calling the authors descriptions poor while writing chicken scratch on the whiteboard. Avoid if possible.
This professor is legit the worse. Quizzes with very little time at the end of class with no leniency. Midterms with multiple, very difficult questions as well as giving very little to do them while also grading so harshly. Do not take his class. If you do, drop it immediately. Do yourself this favor and don't suffer through his class.
If I had to take this professor for the third time, I would probably drop out instead. His tests are insane for the low time limit, he would rather withhold his math beliefs than make our learning worthwhile, and he gets mad when the entire class says they don't understand. Overall careless, and somehow still working at SJSU. Stay away at all costs
You have hw but they not graded, your grades will base on the pop quizzes, 2 midterm test, and 1 final. The pop quiz may be abt the work he did in the previous lecture, or sometimes so stupid. The midterm is super hard, he said he curves the test but he gives 8 problems while the other class only gives 4. Don't ever take him for both A or learn
*Half of both of his calc 3 classes fails* "I did not expect so many of you to fail" - Katsuura. This man does not give af about you. This pretty much sums up SJSU's math department as a whole.
I've never written a review, but I felt I needed to. Drop if you can. If ur still taking his class, wait until the grades for mid 1 and think again. Exams are certainly doable if given enough time(he does not). You have to do things HIS way or you risk little/no credit. Youtube math is more helpful than being in class. Trust the other reviews
Everything is online right now, yet this guy does not use Canvas. His reason is that it is too difficult for him to learn. Yet he expects you to learn HIS difficult style on how to do problems, and if you don't, he'll knock off points. This guy is so old fashion and his lectures are a bore.
He does not have the patience to teach. It is a really tough class and with no material other than his lectures (since he does not like the textbook so sometimes self-learning does not work).
He ignores the book's method and does the work his way. You MUST pay attention in class and learn his methods. He grades really hard and does really big curves at the end. Without the curve, more than half the class usually fails. Only take this teacher if you have no other choice or really want a challenge. Beware of the formatting.
super strict grader and pretty unreasonable
He doesn't use Canvas, which is really inconvenient for students. He only gives practices inside the textbook. When I ask him for a practice problem he said he can't. He doesn't check HW, but you still need to do it. HW takes about 4hrs/week. You have to work extremely hard to get a good grade in this class.
Terrible instructor, he doesn't even deserve the professor title. I don't understand how the university would hire someone this bad to teach. He is extremely strict, his lectures are confusing and he doesn't explain clearly. His exams are very hard, he thinks this is the only class students are taking. Please do students a favor and fire him.
Start Studying. hates on the john Stewart textbook yet gives problems from the text. Multiple times lost points on quizzes using textbook methods and formulas instead of his method. Extremely hard grader, unforgiving. If you dont go to lecture or understand his methods, you cant pass. No homework but theres pop quizes. Not enough time on tests fr.
Quizzes almost every class. Not enough time given for quizzes and tests. You have to go to the lecture otherwise you won't pass. Professor wants answers his own way even if you already have the right answer and work for it. He will take points off of quizzes/tests and not explain why they are wrong.
If u struggle in math, the way he explains things will confuse you. I only happen to do well in his class bc I took advanced math courses in high school (I'm a 1st yr btw) that conditioned me and got used to the difficulty level. He's also pretty rude sometimes; when students asks questions, he interrupts them and doesn't even answer it.
Cons: Harsh grader, HW doesn't count towards grade, messy handwriting, pop quizzes, confusing lectures, assumes we already know certain concepts already Pros: None
Pop quizzes were once a week and are extremely easy as long as you go to lecture and study the example problems. However, his tests are an entire new problem. You lose lots of points and they are way harder than the pop quizzes/lecture problems. I ended up retaking this course with another Professor and easily got an A there. Stay away at all costs
Without doubt the worst professor I ever met in my entire life. Have no problem failing 2/3 of the class. Grade extremely harshly on quizzes and test, minor mistakes dock you 60% of points. If you can take other professor, just anyone besides him, take it!!!
I struggle with math. And I have had past experiences where I had thought that math was really difficult. Taking his class now, I've realized that I did not even come close to the tipping point of how confusing math can be. This professor somehow takes simple easy to understand math, and turns it into something confusing and harsh. Definitely a no.
Harsh grader, complicated lectures, gets pissed when students ask questions. 75% EXAMS, 25% POP QUIZZES Good luck.
Amazing teacher. Me and all my friends would highly recommend this class.
I have taken calculus classes before, and as an "introductory calc class", this was one of the hardest possible classes ever. Poor teacher, bad at explaining, weekly pop quizes, constant amounts of homework, massive difficult semesterly exams. The difficulty of this class is higher than it needs to be. AVOID AT ALL COST, try to transfer.
This is the worst math professor out there. He does not teach well.
Don't take the teacher, from the first day of class, there were atleast 50 students almost filling the whole class up. I stayed because I THOUGHT I was going to clutch the class, but that was not the case. 50 students downs to 15 left in that class and it was a nightmare if you stayed. Listen to the rest of the reviews and don't take the teacher.
Drop while you can. I had no choice than to take this professor and I thought that if I studied enough I could make it through. Worst decision. The lectures are bad, he is an unfair grader who strays from textbook. There are quizzes every week and a half or so that are not taught. Overall self taught class with ridiculous grading and bad teacher.
This professor was the worst! He never helped his students out with anything. I would ask a question about a problem and he would knock on the whiteboard thinking I would magically get it. Like this teacher graded based on exams and quizzes and if you didn't do the problems the way he wanted then you would lose a bunch of points on the exam/quiz's
Pop quizzes almost weekly and has his own process for problems that aren't super clear at first glance. He doesn't post any of the grades on Canvas, you need to email him for your grades. Sometimes he goes on random tangents only barely related to math. He is a harsh grader and the only things graded are the quizzes, midterm and final.
Unforgiving grader, complicated lectures, doesn't like when students ask questions. 75% EXAMS, 25 POP QUIZZES. HW doesn't count towards the grade. Assumes we already know certain concepts already. Hates the John Stewart textbook but gives problems with it. HAVE to use his methods. Inaccurate syllabus test dates. No in-class notes or slides provided
Save yourself the time...I tried to stick with this professor because he was the only one available at the time but that was the biggest mistake in my college career so far, more than half the class is failing. Students already have been checking out in April. All the reviews below are true. This professor should not be teaching anymore.
Please save yourself from retaking this class and pick another. GO ON A WAITLIST OR TAKE THE 7:30 JUST DO NOT HAVE HIM AS YOUR PROFESSOR OVER HALF OF THE CLASS FAILED
Katsuura gets a bad rap online. Katsuura is incredibly passionate about calculus and "hates memorization". He will give you the means to work around or derive relevant formulas used in calc 3 instead of having you memorize them outright. Slightly unconventional but if you show up and pay attention, you'll be fine. He's tough but underrated imo.
dont even bother with this professor. Drop the class if you can and save your gpa. He does not care about anyone...
This was my favorite class. The professor has a teaching style that you need to get used to but after that you really truly learn a lot and it's actually a ton of fun. Hes very passionate about what he teaches and HW IS NOT DUE BUT DO IT SO YOU DO GOOD IN THE CLASS. It is a bit hard but its calc 3, come on people any calc 3 class is going to be.
I don't believe it. No matter what it had taken for me to get right, professor has been throwing away points on all assignments, because he never showed any sufficient examples in lecture. He considered any help as cheating, and test reviews and Canvas as a waste of time. I can't believe he delayed my graduation plan by all this!
Math is simple for me. However, this professor finds a smart way to explain something to CONFUSE you. He often refer our questions as "dumb". You get 8 problems on test when others get 4. As what I have seem nobody in the class understand what he is talking about. The only way to get A in this class is doing HWs and NOT listening to lectures.
Horrible lecturer, extremely tough grader. He acknowledges that a majority of his students fail but offers no solutions. He does not care whether or not you pass the class. On top of being incapable of teaching, he was too slow to enter my grades at the end of the semester which prevented me from taking the next class.
Does not care if students understand the material or not. Questions asked in class are usually deflected. His teaching method does not even make sense. He acts as if everyone in class already previously understands the concept and skips multiple steps when teacher. Very condescending. Loves to go off topic and teaches his "unique" method.
So glad he retired
This is my worst experience taking this class. Over half of the students failed the exam, and I was one of them. I didn't do well because he provided a few examples from the book and whiteboard, and his exams were difficult without review. Also, there is no canvas to see our grades, so we had to email him, which is VERY inconvenient.
Extremely unforgiving and lacks empathy regardless of your situation. Had to Katsuura only because all the other sections were full and I joined late by 2 weeks and he refused to allow me to retake the quizzes so I started with a 0%. Needed surgery mid-way through the semester and he still didn't let me retake quizzes and ultimately failed me.
Professor Katsuura's teaching style just didn't click for me. His lectures were confusing and unhelpful, making it hard to grasp the concepts. unstuckstudy AI ended up being a lifesaver for studying, but I still struggled to do well in the class.
So glad he retired.
