I had Dr. Urakawa for marine systems during the summer. He is nice, and has good organization in his lectures. As long as you pay attention in class, and read the chapters in the book you will do fine. Some of the chapters are really boring, but overall I learned alot in the class.
Cannot speak English for his life, but had all lectures well prepared in power point slides. I didn't use the book but one time for an extra credit paper. Attendance is not mandatory, but suggested. If he sees you put in effort he will bend over backwards in order to help you succeed in the class. He's a good choice for a professor in my opinion
He is an excellent teacher! Very passionate and helpful. Exams are not easy but moderate. I highly recommend this class!
Great professor. he's helpful. lectures were well organized and powerpoint files were easy to understand. it was a good choice. take him. I'd take it over again!
He has a slight accent, but you pick up on it a week into class. If you go to all the classes i dont see you failing. Lots of extra credit and is pretty easy.
Professor Urakawa is very nice and caring to his students. He has labs and video assignments that are very easy points. His exams are challenging and requires you to think of the material that was discussed in class. If you want an A, then you have to study hard for the exams and do the labs and video assignments. Offers some extra credit.
Alittle hard to understand but cares about teaching and willing to help.
hes very difficult to understand but does care about his students and is excited about teaching. hes a microbiology prof and was teach OCE and did not do well. ive had OCE before and he got alot of facts wrong that the newer kids would think was correct. no book, just powerpoints. no real h/w, attendance not really mandatory, just study
Dr. Toshi is a great teacher! He is very passionate and knowledgeable about oceanography. He genuinely cares about his students. He does have a strong Japanese accent that takes some getting used to, but you will get used to it. I highly recommend taking this class. It is really easy as long as you study.
Professor Toshi is a really nice man, super helpful and a great professor. He Gives extra credit oppertunities and is always willing to help sudents in need of assistance. I also like how he is good with names and is personable with most of his students. I highly recomend him to anyone who wants the best out of oceanography.
Dr. Hidetoshi Urakawa is an awesome instructor. He has great concern for the students who show a willingness to learn in his classroom. If you show up to class and truly pay attention to his lectures the information he covers will be comprehended easily and tests will not be difficult. Great Overall
Nice teacher, although hard to understand. Only reason to attend class is assignments most classes that are worth 20 points each, which is 2 percent of your grade each time. Lots of extra credit. All of the information for the tests is online so attendance isn't required in that regard.
It's easy for me to understand an Asian accent, so I had no problem with that, but I heard a lot of people complaining that they couldn't understand what he was saying. Attendance in itself is not mandatory, but then again it kind of is because there's always a lab or video sheet you get a grade for in every class. I definitely recommend Dr. Toshi!
TOSHI! I honestly couldnt understand half this man said, but he gives an insane amount of extra credit that basically allows you to nap all class, do his assignment at the end and get an A in the class. In my class toward the end he stopped the extra credit because people would talk during his lectures and he got tired of it.
Dr. Toshi is one of the best teachers I've ever had. At first his accent was a little confusing but after a couple of classes I barely noticed it. He is passionate about his field and made me more interested as a result. He provides aid and many opportunities for extra credit. If you are going to take Oceanography, you want him for a professor.
Dr. Toshi is a really nice guy. He has no ego, which is very uncommon when it comes to college professors. His accent isn't a problem. If you have a decent grasp of the English language you should be able to understand him. People like to over exaggerate. I also like that he knows his students by name even though there are 70 in the class.
Dr. Toshi is just simply awesome. Just show up to the labs and every class and you'll at least pass. He is funny and willing to offer help if you need it, all you have to do is just ask. He cares about his students and wants the best for them. He does speak in a thick Asian accent, but you get used to it. Also a field trip for extra credit.
(Marine systems) This guy.. Really nice man but THIS IS NOT AN EASY A. Tests are difficult. You have to study for them 110%. Very strong accent but you'll get through it. Don't skip class and answer questions for extra credit. If you do all in class work and pass your tests you'll get a B or A. I got a C. I would suggest it but just don't slack.
Lectures are boring, and every class you either submit a lab or a video assignment. At first I thought this class was hard. But for every exam if you memorize the power points and look at the online quiz before the exam you will easily pass the class. I never opened my textbook.
Very easy class, geared towards nonscience majors. If you show up, you'll pass. Not much homework outside of class besides some printing/online quizzes.
labs, watch movies and answer questions after, and 4 exams. If you skip the days labs or movies are your grade will drop alot. He sometimes will give you 19/20 because "We are not science majors so we dont know everything"
Overall, good professor. Only con is that his accent is fairly heavy and he doesn't provide study guides. Other than that, If you participate you should get a good grade. He gives A ton of extra credit that's worth taking the class alone. Not much HW at all, tests and labs aren't extremely hard. Very nice guy and understanding.
Toshi isn't a bad professor and you'll easily pass if you attend class. This isn't becuase he grades attendance, but because he assigns in-class video assignments, or lab activities every day. His accent is potent, but still understandable once you get used to it. One issue I have with this professor is how difficult his exams are.
Doesn't speak English very well.
Dr. Toshi is awesome. Go to class and listen to the powerpoints. He tells you every slide to study for the exam and gives a quiz before each test. Most quiz questions are on the test so if you actually take time to study the powerpoints and quizzes you can easily get an A. Gives 5% points if you go on field trip and tons of extra credit.
Good teacher but hard to understand. Nice and easy class, also plenty of opportunities for extra credit
Toshi's a good professor who gives lots of opportunities for extra credit. If you go to class, you won't have a problem passing. The exams are kinda hard and he's hard to understand, but overall it isn't a difficult class.
Dr. Toshi was awesome. He gives a numerous amount of opportunities for extra credit, so there really is no reason not to pass his class.
Great guy, the only problem is that it is hard to understand him.
Toshi is so cute! He loves what he teaches! He is a little hard to understand but if you study his powerpoints and the online quizzes, you'll have no problem with exams. Every class has either a lab or video question, both are graded easily and impossible to not get a 20/20. Gives out a lot of extra credit!!!!
Dr. Toshi is a great professor. He is very passionate about what he teaches. Labs and video assignments are pretty easy as long as you pay attention. Tests are difficult but do the other work on time and you should be fine. Go to class to get as many points as you can. Does a field trip that's worth a good amount of extra credit. :)
The accent take a while to get used to but It's not to bad. A nice guy who knows the subject very well; you just have to pay attention in class and STUDY THOROUGHLY FOR THE EXAMS. Print everything he asks, you will lose points if you don't. Extra credit opportunities and a fun field trip.
He is a very good teacher but can be a little difficult to understand sometimes. In class labs and video assignments are worth a lot of points so its important to go to class and do those assignments.
great teacher!
His grading is very generous.
This professor cares about his students grades and if they understand the material he coves. Not a hard class, if you show up and study a bit for each exam you will pass the class with a good grade. He gives extra credit every class for answering questions so if your struggling that helps. Recap: not a hard class, good teacher, extra credit.
Dr. Toshi is a very good teacher. His classes start with a powerpoint lecture and then an easy assignment or lab to complete before the end of class. The assignments are 20 points each so it is important to come to class or it will reflect in your grade. Exams are easy if you study. Overall, it is an rewarding class if you stay on top of your work.
Show up and do the work and you will pass.
We call him Dr. Toshi and he is an extremely caring teacher. At the end of the day the class content is not the most interesting to me, but he does his best to make it interesting and teach us what we need to know. Very good person. Has strong Japanese accent, but it is bearable. He is fun, nice and caring.
The exams are hard. If you don't pay attention in class and study a lot before the exams you won't do well. Every day you'll have either a lab or video assignment in class. They are both easy. Don't skip class, if you do you'll lose a bunch of points.
It was very hard for me to understand Dr. Toshi, especially in such a big class room setting, and I found his test to be difficult. You have to go to class because he has an in-class assignment almost every time but they're not hard at all and you get to work in groups. He gives A LOT of extra credit! Good teacher! CARES IF YOU DO WELL. Funny guy!
I would recommend this class to anyone. Dr. Toshi is a great professor and cares about his students. He really wants you to pass and gives extra credit opportunities every class. The tests aren't hard if you pay attention to the lectures and he literally tells you during his lectures what will be on the exam.
Professor Toshi is honestly great and i recommend him 100%! Sometimes his accent makes it hard to understand him but he gives all his power points on canvas. Quizzes are online, he doesn't take attendance but you usually have something due every class (labs or video with a worksheet).
Can be kind of hard to understand at first but you get used to it and realize he's super funny and a very intelligent guy. Tests can be challenging. I never used my book, wouldn't recommend spending the money on it
He is a good professor and is extremely helpful when it comes to telling you what will be on his tests. There is a lecture and an assignment every class so you do have to show up for class. He is big on extra credit which is extremely helpful.
Dr Toshi is a great professor! It is very clear since the first day that he is very knowledgeable and that he thoroughly enjoys the field he studies. Furthermore, he is humorous, nice, enthusiatic, and his class is very enjoyable over all. I would advise showing up to class because there is a lot to learn but he will not chase you down otherwise.
Very easy class overall. Show up for lectures and he tells you what to expect on the exams. I would take this class again.
Dr. Toshi is awesome! He gives so many opportunities for extra credit, but if you skip class and miss out on taking notes or the labs, your grade will fall quickly. The course content isn't so difficult, but you definitely need to make it to class and do well on the tests to get an A.
Has a strong accent, long lectures, and labs or video assignments everyday but are very easy. Exams are a little hard as there are questions on things that he never went over.
Toshi was a great professor for marine systems. during his lectures he asks questions that when answered, right or wrong you get extra credit. labs and video assignment is how he takes attendance. first part of class is the lecture and then the second part is doing a lab or video assignment.
Dr. Toshi is a great teacher. He does a good job keeping everyone focused for 2 hrs 15 mins. Take good notes, be there for lab, and volunteer for answers (he does a good job remembering students ) and you should be golden!
Once you get past Toshi's thick Japanese accent, he is a wonderful professor to have. He loves what he teaches and it shows. One of the nicest people i've ever met in my life. He's actually a lot of fun if you can get into the whole oceanography thing.
Class is organized, so you know what you will be doing each day. Cannot miss one day or your grade will drastically go down. Tests are hard, so be prepared to study. Accent is extremely difficult to understand.
Toshi is a great guy. He has a passion for oceanography and it definitely shows. His accent is hard to understand but just pay attention and you can figure it out. There are daily in class assignments that you have to be there to turn in so attendance is mandatory. Tests are hard but he gives soo many opportunities for extra credit to help!!
THICK accent. I never knew what he was saying. Has everyday assignment (video w questions, or lab) both were easy and straightforward. The tests are hard and are supposed to correlate with the online quizzes but don't. Id take him again if I could actually understand lectures :-((((
Dr. Toshi is a very caring and kind hearted human being. Besides his strong japanese accent, he is a very caring teacher that tries his hardest for his students. He is very passionate about what he teaches and gives time to study before each exam. For the labs, he guides everyone step by step and offers help every chance he gets. extra credit
Toshi was a funny professor that made the class simple it seemed. The class is weighted heavily on exams, but he gives you the tools for it. He is a little hard to understand because of his accent, but you get used to it.
Toshi is one of the best Professors I have ever had and I am so thankful to have had him as a professor. He cares about your grade and gets excited about class which makes you excited.
Dr. Toshi is a great professor. He is a really nice guy and wants all the students to get a good grade. He really loves oceanography, and knows it inside and out. If you actually study for the tests and do the in class assignments its an easy A. If you answer questions in class, you get extra credit, which is really nice!
I personally enjoyed Dr Yoshi's class, I liked his sense of humor and he obviously is very passionate about what he teaches. He's quite nice and you get many opportunities for extra credit through the semester, most of which are field trips. His class is lecture heavy, usually at least an hour of lecture per class.
very fun class, lectures are long but he makes it fun and he always laughs with the students, don't miss class because there is a lab or a video assignment every day in that class
Very passionate about the class, and cares a lot for his students.
Great teacher who cares about his students success even though we are not science majors in this course! Accent takes a little bit to get use too, but that wasn't a big deal in my opinion. Easy to succeed if you show up and pay attention!
Dr. Toshi was a great inspiration to me. I have never seen someone so passionate about the ocean. Every class Dr. Toshi is very enthusiastic and his energy allows you to get involved with the content and feel passionate about learning. All of the labs allow you to get even closer to the course content and observe the ocean's wonders directly.
Dr. Toshi is a very nice man, but he is very disorganized, won't respond to certain emails, and our class is dependent on two test grades only! Falls behind schedule frequently and is very difficult to understand. If you aren't in class and there is an assignment, it will drop your grade tremendously.
Dr. Toshi is very nice but he is extremely hard to understand. It looks like you will have a lot of grades but in reality your only grades are the midterm and the final. Basically have to teach yourself and the tests don't really reflect what we've learned. If you can take this class with a different professor.
He may be okay for lower level class, but avoid him when it comes to upper level, especially MEMARM. Though he is sweet, his class management is poor. You constantly wonder what is due and if you ask him a question about it he just tells you it takes half the semester to understand how the class works. He is very difficult to understand.
awful professor dont bother taking his class. powerpoints did not cover most of the material for the midterm so goodluck on that.
Dr. Toshi seemed to have a few personal conflicts outside of school which affected his ability to stay organized this semester. Aside from that, he is one of the most genuine and caring professors I've ever had. He really wants you succeed, but I cannot stress enough the importance of good attendance. I would definitely take him again.
Dr. Toshi is so happy and passionate during every class. He speaks perfect English and his Japanese accent is not hard to understand at all. There are a lot of extra credit opportunities, which REALLY boosts your grade. There are a few pop quizzes, so make sure to study the material. The pop quiz questions are the same questions on the exam :).
Although it appeared he really cared about our grades when he stated the lowest test score would be dropped. He then went back on his word and lied to the class, changing his mind the day before the final he wouldn't be dropping our lowest score. He is hard to understand and super thick accent. Still butt hurt he lied to us, but that's life ya?
Dr. Toshi is truly a character! I loved his class so much. He has some "attendence" quizzes that come as a surprise, so if you do not attend class it is more than likely you will not get a good grade. His lectures/powerpoints don't cover the entirety of the tests and exams, so reading the chapters is a must. Overall, he was very helpful and so fun!
Dr. Toshi is such a nice man. He is very passionate about ecology and you can see that in his class! His tests are easy and so are in class assignments, just show up and be present in class and you will pass this class easily.
Dr. Toshi is an easy A. His tests and assignments are easy, but it was almost impossible to get info about assignments until the week they are due. He just assigns random stuff without any warning and expects you to have it done within the week. He made several grading mistakes, so make sure you check your grades and verify you got the right score.
Dr. Toshi is one of the worst professors I've ever had. He arrived late and left class early every time. This is especially unacceptable for a course that includes labs. Once COVID-19 began, he didn't post a single online lecture or provide any guidance. During finals week he gave us a bunch of assignments at once on material that was never taught.
Dr. Toshi is a very nice man however his classes can be extremely boring. He spends most of the time lecturing and reading his PowerPoint. He has a strong accent so he is at times difficult to understand. If you read the PowerPoints and take notes his tests are not difficult. The labs are quite easy as well. Just a really dry class.
He is such a sweetheart. Probably the nicest prof I've ever had. You will need to read the textbook to do well on his exams because his powerpoints won't be enough. He is actually a picky grader in terms of lab work. Make sure your calculations/answers are correct before turning it in. He can be extremely hard to understand at first, but you adapt.
Dr. Toshi is very knowledgeable in his field and is very passionate with his lectures. However, he has a very thick accent so keep that in mind. He is very ppt based, textbook is highly recommended as the Exams are taken out of the book and attendance is mandatory. You will need to do a lot of studying outside of class to pass.
He is a very sweet professor who cares about his students. His class is lecture based. The exams are sort of difficult you have to study a couple hours a week to do well. His personality is funny and it makes the class more enjoyable. I would recommend to others.
Very passionate and knowledgeable.
Dr. Toshi is a great professor. His classes were very lecture heavy from a powerpoint, but there was little homework outside of class and his tests are based off the lectures and the labs done in class. Attendance was taken up until Hurricane Ian. I would recommend, he is a very sweet professor and his class is fairly easy.
Class labs and activities are pretty easy but for exams just make sure to go over the slides because he includes even the examples and also labs. Other than that not to hard but also not to easy.
He is a good teacher. I would recommend him to everyone. Just attend every class so that you don't miss any labs. Missing labs will give you a bad grade. The test are fairly easy. All you have to do is go over the powerpoint, lab questions, and the questions at the end of the each chapter in the textbook. There is a little math as well.
Dr. Toshi was great! The powerpoints were very easy to follow, exams were through canvas and super easy if you study the material. He is very passionate about what he does so it makes the class very interesting. I would definitely take him again and recommend him to others!
So nice and funny, helpful with understanding what research is going on in the labs around the water school. His projects and labs were easy to understand and gave a lot of guidance. He is a little bit hard to understand, need to focus on his voice. He gives extra credit for a bunch of assignments if he likes the way you did it.
An amazing professor, he shows passion in his work and has joy teaching. He gives lectures every class and had labs occasionally. His exams are all based on the PowerPoint so study those for the tests. The only issue is his thick accent, but you get used to it after a few classes. I had many laughs and learned a lot, it's very easy to get involved.
He's such a nice professor, I was having a rough semester overall and ended up emailing him and he really came in clutch and helped me out. He talked to me after class and he even said if people came to class he would drop the lowest exam score and he let me turn in work late. It is very lecture heavy, but the powerpoints usually aren't long :)
Dr. Toshi is an amazing professor! It is easy to tell that he truly cares about each one of his students and is willing to put in the time and effort to provide extra help. His lectures were easy to follow and the labs in this class were great, as we went outside for some, and he usually walked us through every part!
You can tell that he cares about his students, and wants everyone to succeed. With the labs, as long as you follow directions on the paper you can get full credit, he most likely will give 21/20. This class is exam-heavy with three exams and a final exam, he will drop your lowest test score. I want to take another one of his classes in the future.
Every class has a lecture, but they are interesting and he is passionate about the topics. He is also always willing to answer questions.
He is a really great professor and provides an easy learning environment with plenty of chances to finish with an A. He does lots of fun labs outside and never keeps the class the full amount of time.
I highly recommend it! He is so caring and excited about teaching!
Dr. Toshi is great and I would recommend him to others. Every class involved a powerpoint lecture with interesting videos and some days we would do fun labs outside too. He gives extra credit on the labs if you do good. Overall your grade is highly effected by your exam scores so make sure to study his powerpoints if you want a good grade.
Dr. Toshi was a passionate teacher! His lectures were informative and he is a very caring professor when it comes to student grades. Exams were easy if you studied the lectures, and he reviews in class before with exam questions. Attendance wasn't required but recommended! I would definitely take him again given the opportunity!
Dr. Toshi cares so so much about every person. Although it is sometimes slightly hard to understand what he says the class is still very passable.
Good professor. tests are relatively straight-forward. Some concepts are hard but overall easy class
Great professor! He made sure you understand ecology and what will be on tests. He also makes the class relatable by using local animals and areas to relate to course materials. The lab days are not something you can make up if missed but they are simple and you finish in the class time without having to bring the work home.
Dr. Toshi is very passionate and knowledgeable about ecology and makes the class fun with his lectures with fun examples and makes it a point to learn everyone's name. Exams have the biggest impact on your grade, but other assignments are extremely helpful for studying exams. I had fun creating my extinct creation presentation and outdoor labs.
Funniest and kindest professor. At first his accent was a little strong, but he always took time to make sure you understood what he meant, by the second week you can understand him perfectly. He made every class interesting and supplemented his lectures with videos to make sure you weren't bored. Love him! 10/10!
Dr. Toshi is a very caring professor and his lectures are great. His accent can be a little tough to understand at times, but he tries his best to be understood. His lectures were great and he incorporated videos into his lectures so we wouldn't get bored. The exams were pretty easy as long as you studied the content on his powerpoints.
Dr. Toshi Urakawa was a great professor. He is caring and nice you just need to communicate with him. There are 3 exams and 1 final. The exams are all based of the lecture slides. His labs cannot be mad up so make sure you attend his labs. His attendance is mandatory if you miss class you'll loose points. He does have a heavy accent.
Great ecology professor! The class was pretty easy, definitely recommend even for non-science majors. If you just show up and take notes, you will do well. Not a lot of grades so your grade is dependent on attendance and exams.
One of the best professors i've had by far. His tests are weighted heavily and labs don't help too much but if you study you'll do fine. I do recommend the textbook, he gets some test questions from there. Attendance is also mandatory but he gives good lectures. Somewhat picky for grading labs just make sure to follow everything to a T.
Dr. Toshi is a good Ecology professor, and lectures well. Exams are 65% of grade, so pretty heavy. Study the exam slides thoroughly as well as lab calculations and you should be fine. No curve in the class, and no extra credit.
As long as you pay attention in lectures and labs, you will do well in this class. Attendance matters and is graded. The professor did enable a couple of drops for labs if you needed to miss for whatever reason. My favorite lab was probably the Tree Lab. Overall, the material in this course is applicable to where we live and will live. -PG
Dr Toshi is amazing. All his tests cover only the topics on the powerpoints. The labs are easy. He has an accent but after a couple days you really do get used to it and can understand. He's very nice and caring and makes ecology an easy A or B
He grades the first and second labs harshly so students don't slack for the rest of the semester. His exams are sometimes difficult because of wording and peculiar questions. There is a text book but it not required to be bought, he does pull questions from the text book sometimes.
Dr. Toshi takes his teaching seriously and wants all of his students to succeed. He can be very passionate about it, and will encourage participation and focus in his classes. His lectures are very entertaining and he's super funny. If you ever need help or have questions, he will stay with you until you understand and is overall a very kind guy.
He's an ok professor. He's passionate about the course but does get annoyed sometimes if you don't understand the concepts right away. For me the math was the hardest part of the class and the subject he was least willing to help explain. He's a decent professor, just not for everyone. Very friendly and passionate about his work.
He grades unfairly somehow I got points deducted but my table mate didn't even have the work completed but got full points. Also on our first exam he expected us to know long division even though he didn't specifiy we would need it before hand and let the class before us use calculators. He also expects you to already know the equations.
Only shows how to do math 10% of the time. Expects you to already know equations even though he hasn't taught the content yet. If your confused why he has good reviews it's because he wants his students to fill out rate my professor before they take their final exam and will talk about before hand how their final grades aren't submitted yet.
Dr. Toshi is a passionate and caring professor. His lectures are engaging, with helpful videos and hands-on labs. Exams are straightforward if you study the material. unstuck study was a great study tool alongside the textbook. Overall, a fun and manageable class.
Good Professor
I loved this class! He was very clear with what he had on the exams and his lectures were concise and interesting. He was amazing with responding emails, he has a good sense of humor, and he is always willing to explain everything in more detail.
Yeah don't listen to the people below me with bad scores they salty. Dr. Toshi is the goat and such a nice guy. The exams do require you to know some equations before hand but you can honestly just hide the equation in your calculator for the test. By the way he drops 3 labs and the tests are basically all multiple choice.
best and easiest professor for ecology. exams were all easy, 50 questions, everything is on the lectures. labs are around an hour long and not difficult at all. mostly lecture based but its an easy class. hes a great professor, very caring.
Dr Toshi is an easygoing teacher that gives interesting lectures, the class is mostly the tests, the single day labs, and attendance, try to show up and go over the lectures for the tests, he explains everything well
