Good lecturer. Grades a little harder than other GE professors I've had.
he is a good lecturer, talks clearly, need to read in order to pass!
He is OK. Nothing unusual: listen to the lectures and read a little bit for exams and you'll be fine. I liked the class and got an A by putting 2 hrs of studying towards each exam.
Sufficent lecturer. Cracks jokes sometimes.
The professor is very inspiring and gives a very good lecture about world issues. I believe that he has opened my eyes and given me a better sense of what the world is really like because I use to take everything for granted.
Hardest general education prof i've ever had. Actually had to read the book. Other than that, he's ok.
Dont expect to not read and pass the class...READ the book...and listen to his lectures
made subject interesting by telling his own experiences
OK lecturer, gets boring sometimes. Shares some interesting personal experiences. Hard to follow his lectures cuz he jumps on history events. Doesn't like to answer student's questions in class. Nonetheless, a good AAS prof.
TEacher is easy. Go to class and participate everyday and your good. I didn't really read all that much but I just BS-ed my way through lecture and I was all good. TIP: If you didn't do the reading,be firt to say soem random BS.Trust me
this class was very informative and fun to be in. The teacher teaching skills are good. He likes to keep his students interested.
knowledgable/interesting/funny but lectures somewhat scattered/confusing..jumps from one topic to the next. Consists of intersting videos discussions. 3 5pg journals and 1 big project +presentation. Vague on what is expected of assign. But all you need to do is ask. somewhat apporachable.
Dr. Do is a good teacher. I think the class is hard because of the content and also the writing part. I took him along with Pro. Rooks who is a bit easier grader than Do but Rooks was the one who wrote the Exams and they were hell of hard and LOOONG. If you are having trouble go and talk to them.
He's a cool teacher, but I don't know who the hell said he was hot cuz he is NOT HOT!
if u take Rooks & Do, this is what u need to do. basically pay attention once in awhile especially if they repeat things alot cuz that'll be on the exam. 2 essays which are easy, i never read & got B papers starting the night before it was due. skim thru the book before exams & u should be fine
If you like reading a lot and writing a lot, you'll like this guy. His lectures are a bit unorganized so it can be a little confusing. The tests are atrociously long: 10 short answer, 2 short essays, 1 long essay.
He is a good teacher
He tends to trail off what he's talking about to something unrelated like stock market and such but it's interesting when it happens. Unorganized, doesn't write much on board. Easier grader than Choi so take him instead. More interesting than Yomato.
Professor Rook's Partner - he's coo I guess, but I dont know - when he's trying to explain something - it's off track and****...but I guess it's okay since Professor Rooks is always the one teacher
Professor Rook's Partner - he's coo I guess, but I dont know - when he's trying to explain something - it's off track and****...but I guess it's okay since Professor Rooks is always the one teaching
If you hate reading, please don't take this class. I am a preson who doesn't like to read so I'm hella struggling with the class. However, if you take good notes during the lectures you should be fine. Most of the things on the test are in the lectures. Although, taking notes can be crazy because they usually speak like 60 miles per minute.
I had Do for aas33a and yamato/choi for 33b. Do is a lot more interesting to listen to and is easier to understand than the other guys
One group project (written & oral), one midterm, one final, really pushes for participation and lotsa reading and some brief writing assignments.
Prof. Do and Rooks are really cool and make class fun and interesting. As with any history class, you'll have to pay attention to the lecture, take good notes and do your reading. I didn't read but I still aced the exams. It's all about relating concepts and ideas. Just pay attention and you'll do fine.
had to spend most of my time studying for this class. a lot of reading but only required 2 exams and 2 essays overall. very interesting and actually cares about getting to know the students and relating what we learn to our lives. great class and passionate teacher. recommended for decent learning but not for an easy A. you have to work for it
Outside reading required, but the class is a lecture. His lectures are interesting and he makes it so that its engaging and we understand. Sometimes it's a bit difficult for me to take notes the way he lectures because he goes all over the place, but for the most part, it's interesting listening to him and he's a funny guy. I like the Do/Choi combo
I took the Choi/Do combo and liked it pretty good. You should attend the lectures as well as read to do really well. There are 2 midterms, a final, class participation exercises, and 2 papers (3-5pgs in length). You should go to his office hours if you have questions b/c he is very helpful. No study guide or review for tests (stressful!!) Okay clas
I had Do and Rooks for both 33A/B. Do was a great teacher, especially if you get to know him. I did not like the class too much, but if you read the book and go to the lectures, you should be ok.
I took AAS 33A with him and Choi. He was the better lecturer. His lectures are clear and give a lot of information, but it's not enough for his tests. If you want that A on midterms, you have to earn it. The class isn't super hard, but not super easy either.
Prof Do is really cool. Clear, interesting lectures. If you pay attention to his lecture, you prob won't need to read the book. Easy, fun class. Basically a U.S history course from colonial days to the Civil War. AAS33B is 1865-present. Enjoy!
This class requires a lot of participation. There is a five page journal due every three weeks. This class has a midterm and biography paper/presentation. This class actually requires you to read the textbooks in order to be able to participate. Dr. Do is very nice and reasonable, but this is totally not an easy A class. You have to earn it.
I took this course with Do and Choi and of those two, Do is the serious one. He's very clear on his lectures, but he cracks a few jokes once in a while to loosen up the moment. Doesnt give guideline for midterms or final, but you just gotta study. You have to be in class to get the notes or else, you're goin 2 be behind on the readings and such.
He is not a kick-back, chill professor. Do expects you to have read the material and to contribute to class. You will have to put forth real effort in all facets of class - journal, midterm, papers. With all that said, Do is a great professor. Very helpful and flexible. You can skate to a B/C. An "A" needs real effort. Best of all - NO FINAL EXAM.
Took Do and Habal for AAS33B..attendence isnt A BIG DEAL but u'll miss out a lot on lecture if you don't show. Stern and passionate basically on what his teaches, pretty chill but he isnt one that will help you review much...but i'll recommend him, and dis is from someone who missed his class quite a few time
Probably one of the greatest teachers SJSU has. Very reasonable, knowledgeable, and passionate about class material. Do hates it when the class is dead and no one is willing to contribute to class discussions. His classes really revolve around fruitful discussion; he's always great in answering questions and posing new ones. I'm glad I took him.
Very nice guy, but kind of lazy. Grade is solely dependent upon the final group rsch paper and take home final (no midterms). Find a good group b/c you'll be working with them all semester. Also, a few minor assignments on the way, but they are not worth any substantial points. He does expect you to do the reading, so you need to buy the books.
I took both his AAS 33A AND 33B class. Doesnt write much on the board so note taking is a challenge. Tests are HARD. He is very unsympatheic n puts himself 1st. He is very smart and will argue 2 the ends of he earth that he is right in every debate w/students when at times he is clearly wrong. He puts students on blast in front of ur peers 4 kicks
doesn't write on the board so taking notes is difficult and sometimes he goes off topic. tests are hard. read the book to get a better understanding.
He's pretty easy if you want to coast through and get a B/C. He often either cancels a midterm or final. A group project is mandatory. If you can outwork your group members, he'll give YOU the A. Very easy going professor. The class itself is not too difficult. He's one of the more helpful professors in the social sciences department. Great guy.
Whatever he says, you don't REALLY need to read. I took winter session, and didn't read a single sentence, yet was still able to write pages upon pages for tests. I was a bit put off by the fact that he skipped over WWI & II, saying they're unimportant, but spent hours talking about repetitive sociological crap. I thought this was a history class?
Prof. Do is a really easy going, nice and helpful professor. He like discussion style lecture and the things you will learn is the things will stay with you for life. he is not your typical always getting test and quizzes professor. he is really passionate about teaching..GOOD PROF.!!
took do/doi combo and do is the harder one. doesn't give sympathy to students who fail his tests. he grades harder and refused to give us study guides for the tests. just read and you should be ok, but the reading is so boring.
I took the do/franks class and it was pretty easy. 2 papers, 2 midterms, 1 final. Exams consisted of 5 essay questions. It may seem hard but if you answer all the questions precisely and add all the important detail you'll be fine. My exams and papers all avg about 26/30 and got a A- in the class. Highly recommended teachers.
Took AAS33a with Franks and Do for the fall. Do was pretty laid-back but still informative. Cracks jokes now and then that relate to the material. Needed something like 3 books, didn't read a thing. Just went to class and took notes. Midterm and Final were pretty easy.
Winter Session AAS33b with Franks and Do. Two weeks of class. needed 4-6 books (two from aas33a). didn't bother buying any them. went to class and took notes. didn't really review notes. some of the slides were online. study guide online. got two mini breaks within the 3+ hours. good teacher. pretty chill.
If Asian American Studies is not your major then STAY AWAY. If you have a time consuming major and study all day, then dont take him. I got an A+ with habal/hanasaki, and i plan on getting a C in this class. Ive never got B on a paper or midterm until this class. But if this is your major, then he would be a great teacher, hes funny and passionate
Took combo of Do/Doi. Do's lecture can be fun and easy to understand, but he isn't an easy grader. He is kind of harsh on grading especially for his tests. There is no study guide, but you have to read from the book and study from lecture notes.
I took AAS33A&AAS33B with DO and franks.Do was a harder grader than Franks. everytime they grade our in-class essays and take home essays,I hoped that Franks was the one grading.Do is also boring in his lectures. his voice sounds kinda weird, and he's trying hard not to break through with his asian accent.I rather take Franks with another teacher
He's a pretty hard grader, so you have to keep up with his lectures and the readings, but overall, he's really cool! His lectures are extremely interesting and keep you engaged, he knows how to relate history to today, and he's extremely likable!
EASY! Took Franks/Do for A and Franks was easier grader. Then took Do/Doi for B and Do became such an easy grader! Do's lectures are the best out of all of them. Very passionate and interesting. Highly recommend. Got A in both classes and hardly studied.
Took him with Franks and I liked Franks way better than Do. Although I did well in the class Do's lectures can get boring and frustrating at times because of his quick trigger when going through power point slides. He is also a tough but fair grader. The best way to review for his tests is to take good notes and then look over the book.
Took him for with Franks, and it was alright. 2 midterms, 2 papers, and 1 final. He'll bump your grade up if he sees consistent improvement in your midterm/paper scores. Highly recommend taking this class with him.
I'm not really too interested in history, but this class is bearable. Some of the lectures are a little dry, but as long as you come to class and pay attention to the main points of his discussions, you'll do well. Professor Do does not give any study guides so don't be expecting to get by too easily.
Strict teacher but he's an easy grader. His teaching methods are quite effective (even though I still got a bad grade :D). Class requires a lot of reading and work. He's a nice guy, if you're a good student
Liked him the most as an AAS teacher. His lectures were clear and concise. He's strict but he grades pretty fairly. I always got better grades when he grades my papers and tests. He's a really nice person to talk to when you go to his office hours.
He's great, makes you want to pay attention. He's not boring, just sometimes but he's great (=
great professor he really knows what he is talking about and entertaining lecture
I really enjoyed having him as a teacher. If you attend class regularly, it's easy to get an A. His tests are also pretty easy, you just need to read over lecture notes.
He is extremely helpful and at times funny. He is passionate about the subject that he's teaching. He wants the class to be self-aware about the world around them. He is a great professor. People should take him for AAS.
He lectures are engaging and fun. He does his best to make history interesting.
Sounds like a tough professor but proved to be otherwise. He engages the class with critical thinking questions rather than lecturing historical facts. Had Do with Franks, and I believed he was the easier grader among the two. Attendance is mandatory for those participation points.
I had the AAS series both w/ Professor Do and Frank. Professor Do was clear and a good lecturer. He may seem a little intimidating but hes friendly and will answer any question you have. Just don't show any signs of disrespect (browsing online) he will put you on blast and kick you out lol. Oh, and he gave me an add code b/c he recognized me :)
Hands down, one of my favorite professors at SJSU. Don't be fooled, you have to work for your grade, but Dr. Do is a highly respectable individual who wants his students to succeed. That means he isn't just going to give you an A, so EARN IT. He takes his lectures very seriously and if you try to push him over, YOU WILL GET BURNED! I LOVE THIS GUY!
33A is the class where there's a lot of reading involved since some of the lectures might help out certain assignments for the class. Professor Do tries to make certain events related to current events so that other students would understand the materials better. Get ready to read and take careful notes for this class.
I took AAS 33A and B with Professor Do. He is a very interesting professor. Take careful note in class and you'll be fine. Exams usually based on note. When you have any concern just go to his office hour.
respectable as a teacher but grades hella hard. no study guides provided for any tests. had a combined class with franks, 2 essays, 1 gov project, and a final. he will kick you out if he catches you on your phone or surfing the web. offers many extra credit opportunities. dont take him if youre looking for an easy A, more like an easy C
Had him and Franks for two semesters. Nice professor. I think his lectures are interesting.
He gives good lectures and answers your questions. However, participation really matters on when hell grade your papers. There were some students who turned in their papers later than me and got graded, but he didnt grade my papers. So he notices when youre not there and wont grade your papers until the end of the semester.
Tests were repetitive - mostly asking the same essay prompts over and over. Lectures are interesting but sometimes he goes by too fast (also does not upload online).
Helpful teacher
Easy A
take notes and you will pass
One of the best professors I've had. These classes are lecture heavy, but they relate to the world we are in right now and make you think about the life we are living. He is able to talk about politics without completely saying you have to side with him, which is what I like. 2-3 papers, no hw, and midterms/final are all online essays.
Professor Do is the type of professor to persuade the students to care about the social issues that concerned our society in the past & how these issues affect our society today. Though this is the case, he should give us clear grading criteria on essays and exams, give constructive feedback & become more lenient with students' efforts.
Tough Grader. I am an A-student and I know that I actually gave this class my best effort but it didnt seem so by the grade I had received.
An inspirational professor! He encourages his students to not only worry about grades but also to consider what we learned from our history.
I feel like his lectures are almost too informal. I didn't feel like I learned anything new from his course material especially for an upper-division AAS class I wish we could've taken the opportunity for seminar discussions or debates instead of listening to lectures about stuff we also got in Pols 15b (civil rights etc).
Lecture heavy, but he barely assigns any hw. Only 2 papers total for the entire semester. He would assign reading assignments, but honestly you dont need to read to get an A in that class. Just attend his lectures and take careful notes . (He also curves your grade if he sees that youre trying in his class, just email him.)
Professor do doesnt seem to care about his students feedback on how difficult he makes the class. Multiple students have brought it up to him that our learning and tests are difficult to do especially since he makes us write 3 essays in only one hour for our exams. he Also doesnt provide feedback on your grades and why you got the grade.
One of the worst professors that I've ever had. I'm currently a student in his class and overall the class is a complete waste of time. I should've listened to past students and taken another class. He's rude and doesn't go along with the syllabus even though he was the one that plans it. He schedules exams whenever he wants. Horrible professor.
Makes us write essay for exams but doesn't even give us feedback to make the next one better. No date on syllabus for exams. Has PowerPoint slides with no info so the only info for notes you get is him talking. He talks so much so you won't know which information is important. Don't take this class if you're trying for easy gen ed units.
Nice guy, but this class was extremely lecture heavy and he's very monotone so it gets old fast. Honestly one of the most boring classes I've ever taken. Thought it would focus more on the Asian American perspective of U.S. history but it was literally just like the history classes I took in middle school. ALL tests are essays :/
Very tough grader & doesn't give you feedback to know what you did wrong. Few assignments and one big essay at the end of semester. For the online course, exams had 3 essays in an hour & 15 which was not enough time at all. Important to listen to what he says during lectures and take note of what he says bc slides dont have enough info to help u.
His class is based on all lectures with a handful of assignments, meaning if you do poorly on one assignment your grade will be greatly affected. His midterm questions are unclear and he clarifies them after they are taken. There are no talks about Asians, it's just American history.
He goes very fast in lectures & it's very hard to keep up. He's a very tough grader on exams & hw and doesn't really give feedback. Don't bother emailing & ask after class because he either takes forever to respond back or does't respond at all. Very monotone & easy to lose focus. I was hoping to learn Asian history but we learned all U.S. history.
Class isn't even about AAS, it's the U.S history you'd learn in your high school class. Lectures are informal, he goes really fast, grades extremely tough. The highest grade any person could've gotten in my class was an A-. Gives no feedback on hw. Tests are all essays w/ little time, 3 papers & that's it. Gets pissed off when you have questions.
This professor grades exams / other assignments very harshly, and does not provide feedback on why you got the grade you received. The class was not even about Asian History, it was just about US History. His exams are all essay exams, where he expects you to write three essays in 1 hour and 15 minutes, which was stressful and difficult to achieve.
Hien is the worst professor I have ever had! He didnt respect his students, he had a bad attitude about students asking questions. All of his exams are essays with three questions. You can only have 1 hour and 30 mins to finish it, which is tough and hard to handle. Also, he is a super tough grader, he never gives full credit to anyone.
Hes a solid choice for the 33 A & B series.
Prof enjoys what he teaches. Group final allowed us to explore what we're interested in and gave us class time to work with our groups. Aside from the final, only 4 other graded assignments, each is a 5 page journal. Overall very easy class, no quizzes or tests
He called me out in front of the whole class and said he was gonna throw my phone out of the classroom if I don't put it away. It was never that serious, childish if anything. I asked for feedback on my assignments, and he didn't wanna respond, like thanks for nothing. The worst professor I've ever encountered.
Professor Do is a very successful, very passionate professor, but I did not like this class one bit. His lectures are mostly oral, so if you're absent, you miss all the content. He is emotionally volatile and has yelled during multiple lectures. He does not tell you what you did wrong on midterms and gets mad when you ask him to review them.
This class is not what you think it is, it is just American history. Professor Do sounds like a standard APUSH teacher, and grades essays harsh. He barely gives any assignments, a total of 2 essays and 3 or 4 tests that are also essays. Extra credit is SO important, make sure to do every assignment, because it boosts your grade so much.
Professor Do is a lecture heavy professor. He assigns very little homework which is good but in turn makes it so that if you miss one or screw up on one it will ruin your grade. His tests are timed essays which are graded harshly with little to no rubric. If you are good at writing, this class will be easy, if not, I don't recommend.
Professor Do is a pretty average lecturer, he reads off of slides and adds commentary to them which is insightful AND ON THE EXAM. We have responses to give our opinions, and I wrote lots but he gave me a 4.5/5. He does not give full credit a lot, no easy A. From the small to big assignments, he grades tough. He also doesn't respond to emails FYI.
6 assignment grades whole semester and 4 were exams. Exams were writing 3 essays within time limit and expect you to be detailed. Provides no rubric or feedback and class honestly thinks he threw out grades. Received a lower grade on a completed three-essay exam compared to half-assed exam where was only able to finish two. Only take as last resort
Professor Do does not provide any feedback. He also doesn't have many assignments to help bring up your grade if needed. Exams are based on his lectures so make sure you show up to class. It's 3 essays within about an hour and 15 minutes and you won't know what it's about until the day and time of the test, so you really have to know the topics.
The subject wasn't necessarily "difficult," but HE IS DIFFICULT TO WORK WITH. He is very unorganized, will forget to post assignments, forget to add a descriptions for them, refuse to give anyone 100% on assignments unless he can see that we know the material "better" than him, and he gets very angry if people don't answer his questions in class.
I would never take a class of his again. Luckily the subject wasn't hard but I had to endure the worst time in class because of his egotistical teaching. He always spoke about how much smarter he is than us and never gave anyone a 100% on an assignment if they didn't know it "better" than him. He treated it like a high school classroom.
Every exam was actually a timed essay and just one essay assignment. His lectures are boring and he always takes points off for the essays but never tells you why. Easy class, just take good notes because exams are open note!
He begins his class by calling himself a hard*ss and purposefully calls students out during lectures to make them uncomfortable. He is also incredibly rude when asked questions over email. I asked him to clarify the date and location for our final exam, and he responded with 'If you have been attending class, you would have that information.'
Be ready to write 3 essays within 1 hour. There were 2 midterms and 1 final exam which were FRQ questions from topics in class. Although there are slides, 50% of the time they are empty because his lectures in class are based off of those slides and you must attend to be able to get any info. Prof never gives full credit and has a bad attitude.
The subject itself isn't even related to Asian American studies, it's literally a US History class. Easily the WORST professor I've ever had. Cranky, narcissistic behavior, and always in a bad mood. He doesn't care about students and throws out grades with no explanation for why. 6 assignments total: 2 exams 1 final (open note), and 3 short essays.
Took over winter. He knows how to relay and teach detailed events and ideas. I am grateful I took this class.
He gave great lectures and was knowledgeable, but not a single person got full credit for any of the assignments. He grades literally to the decimal as in 18.75/20. He doesn't give any feedback as to why he gave that grade either. All homework and exams are essays and I wrote about 5500 words for the whole 2 week course.
I took this over the winter session and there were big assignments due in a short time. We had two exams, two essays, and we had this other small writing assignment. The lectures were important to attend since he gets his exam questions from them. All the exams are essays and this isn't an easy class since he grades really hard.
Unclear grading criteria, also doesnt give feedback for any assignments so i had no idea how i could improve
Never gives a 100%, doesn't show up to midterms/finals, unclear grading criteria, we had like 2 essays, 2 essay exams, and then the final. most of them is based on what you learn in class, so If u come to class and take a few notes then ur good
Professor Do is tough but fair. Exams are challenging essay-based, so attending lectures is crucial. I found unstuck AI and the free textbook helpful for prepping. Overall, a rewarding but demanding course.
