very nice but confused - does not know course material well
always well-prepared, just needs to relax a bit
RUDE!
has no clue!
Still has not formed her own opinions...Was not prepared to teach a 2nd year course...Has low confidence...i have not read anything she has published, but as a lecturer- definitely poor. sorry, but my earniest opinion

Nice lady/friendly.Those in the class who are in the upper elite intellectually may suffer because she spends too much time explaining the same thing to those who do not listen or do not know the language well.

Pretty much just sumaraizes the readings. Does not provide any new information. She does not have any opinions of her own...only goes by what the book says. Clueless...but easy
Good prof, but seems unprepared to answer questions.
She sucks! What's funny is that she actually thinks she's intelligent. she should just take an early retirement.
I JUST GOT ONE WORD....HORRIBLE!!!!! My grandma can teach better than her!!
Hard to believe she actually has a PHD...gives me hope for if she could get one, ANYONE with half a brain can
Finally someone who allows you to think, even encourages it. Those who cannot think may be disappointed.
By far, among the best professors I have had in my four years at York U. I have even taken courses I was not altogether interested in simply because she was teaching it.
BORING!! If you read the books, you'll pass the course. I got an A without attending lecture, b/c all she does is summarize the books. She is a terrible prof and I will NEVER take a course with her again
Since there is a word limit, simply put, a great prof, great topic. You have to listen to enjoy and ignorance can only prevent proper understanding. Thank you Professor Davis, this wasn't class, it was friends having fun while learning at the same time.
Prof. Davis creates a great atmosphere for learning, students really have a chance to discuss issues on a personal as well as academic level. Also, she's very approachable outside of class and is always willing to help.
A Professor whose guidance encourages a positive learning environment. She guides the class in their discussions of assigned topics while allowing for student introduced slightly deviant discussion. Her class was intersting and creatively designed.
She's a great teacher. Encourages lively discussions and assigns interesting readings. She is very smart AND knows how to teach - a rarity at York!
amazing prof.. one of the best i've had so far.. actually makes and attempt to get to know her students.. highly recommended
TERRIBLE!! Nice person but she is awful professor for a modes a reasoning course. All the class has to do is argue back and she caves. MODR is not for her. Count how many times she says the word "right" in one class. I got aprox 90 words.
too many snide remarks, too much rambling on. not very good prof, very unfocused and unclear
I think she's great, her class is pretty much the only one i'm interested in. She explains everything and is very clear. She does give a lot of work, but it's to be expected. Good job! by the way, i like her little stories that have nothing to do with anything.
Nice prof, has interesting stories to share and is easy going. She teaches with examples which is a plus but her explainations for areas that she didn't have time to show are vague. Overall, course load is the only thing that held me back from liking the course. Will recommend this prof to anyone
she confuses herself too much...she should try writing down on the board or doing overheads...good thing, the course let's you think...too many, way too many readings for this course...we have other courses and lives too...500pgs/wk is a little too much
very good professor, one of the best i've had
This prof is a little boring. The tutorials are waste of time. All she talks about is her damn daughter and how her relationship failed. Came into class with the same knowlegde that i left with. very hard marker and takes years to returns emails. ALso goes back on her word does not give externtions.
she is a total pain in the arse! she is a very hard marker with a weird approach to life that she feels she explain to the class.
I dunno what the fuss is about...she was honestly a great teacher. Clear, concise, and to the pount...highly recommended
Let us know what work had to be done, but enjoyed a sense of humour. She was fair overall, but has high expectations of students. Enjoyed the class overall.
the class overall wasn't bad but was very boring to me. She has a wierd marking scheme which i think is dumb but what can u do. She is a pretty good prof and she loves kitkats lol
first half of the course very good. the 2nd was boring. you could get away with not doing most of the 2nd term work if you do well first term.
Shes a pretty good prof, sometimes she can get a bit off topic, or confusing. She isn't that hard of a marker, its easy to get a B. Do your homework, show up to class, participate and your mark will go up, bc all that stuff counts towards your final mark.
just a note from a 3rd year student. All the people in my class that liked Hilary actually worked, they participated, and tried to understand concepts. If you do that she is great and is willing to lead a very interesting discussion.
An outstanding prof! She teaches very well and gives clear instructions for assignments. Highly recommanded to take her class!
A tough professor, but the material is easy. and the professor's explaination is unclear. the good thing is she gave high marks to students.
Gets herself confused about what she is teaching. Has difficulty pronouncing names of non-anglo saxon people. A positive thing was that she gave me hope that I could get a PhD...If thos woman can get one, so can I. Use her notes to study for tests and write papers.
Meh is all i have to say about her and the class. very mediocre. liked the material, not so much the prof. reveiwed things too much and was not inspiring
She's an average professor. She knows her stuff well enough, and she engages the students in good discussions. However, she doesn't argue strongly enough. It sometimes annoys me when she'll let someone say something really stupid and irrelevant for a while, without refuting it. She's helpful with essays.
Excellent Prof! Knows her stuff! But hard work for assignments and tests are extremely necessary
ultra smart.
An excellent professor. She is a professor who is always willing to help when it's needed. Good at providing a forum to debate and exchange ideas. A course I was somewhat interested in was made interesting because of teaching style and professor. Thanks!
shes an amazing teacher - one of those professors that know their stuff - which means u have got to work really hard to maintain your grade!!! she gives alot of assignments and homeworks..
Casual speech in a crammed classroom. Overall I enjoyed the class, which she helped make more interesting. Although her marking is sometimes rough it is quite fair if you examine the marking scheme. In this class MODR 1770 you will write a lot and do lots of homework.
She was good, not great, but good. She's clear about what she wants, but can be a little "ambigious" here and there. Just know what she wants, and get out as much help and feedback for assignments. Lots of homework and about 5 assignments, must say it was an EASY CLASS!
This was a difficult course, but the prof. was willing to go out of her way to help you understand the course. In that respect, what more could you ask for.
She's fantastic and gets to know her students well, very fair marker. I loved her class. A prof who makes it very easy to obtain an A for once
The material is challenging, but the prof is always there to offer help whenever needed. She made the material interesting and clear ! Highly Recommended!!!
Nice prof, talk about her daughter a lot! But it was a fun class. She marks attendance AND homework! Her notes are better than the text book. Overall, it was a fun class. Not hard to get an A.
She is an excellent Prof! For assignments and exams, she tells you exactly what you need to do/study. Extremely helpful and a fair marker. The class never touched the MODR textbooks in the second semester! Take MODR with Hilary!
Professor Davis, if you read sometimes the comments, I just want to say that you are amazing!I was scared this subject first, English is not my first language.YOU MADE ME LOVE IT!Thank you very much for everything, God bless you!
Intelligent and very much helpful. Strongly recommended!
She was an excellent instructor of the course material. She likes to make the class laugh to keep everyone engaged in the material. She is always willing to meet with you for extra help. I HIGHLY would request to have her again!
I had Davis for another class and I thought she was rude. But I had her again for modes of reasoning and she's changed to be an excellent prof! VERY helpful and her tests and assignments are EXACTLY what she says they are. Well prepared!
The fallacies were really cool, but the rest of the material was a waste of time. She's an awesome person and the class was a chillfest. There wasn't much for her to actually teach because the course lacks material, but I'd recommend her to everyone. We really had a fun time in class cracking jokes, and if you can do that in university, it's awesom
Awesome prof, very talentEd and down to earth, had a great time
teaches very well, if u attend lectures and do the work u will get a good mark, but lectures can get boring
I am an accounting student. Had a cumulative GPA of 8. Never understood the course. Couldn't understand what professor wanted in the assignments and tests. Sometimes got an A+ and sometimes C. The course itself is without any logic and professor is not helpful. U will never understand why u got high or low marks. Got a B.Don't recommend her.
Coolest prof at york. Her class was really fun and you learned alot. She is really down to earth, one of the only professors you can actually crack jokes with during class. She really engages the class. Attend all lectures and do all the homework and you will get a good mark.
worst prof ever, can't understand what she means, she literally put me to sleep going around in circles, never used the book waste of 100$ there, pray that you aren't forced to be with her
Confusing and ambiguous both instructor and course. Rules given and then contradicted when doesn't suit instructor.
Worst prof ever. Lectures are boring, a waste of time. She talks about her life quite often. Very picky and couldn't understand what she wants in her tests and assignments. an advice, DON'T TAKE HER CLASS AT ALL COST.
She is a great professor with an awesome personality. Fun and energetic. Her class was a bit tedious but I enjoyed the environment that she creates and allows in her class. Cute to.
incredibly boring, has the most annoying nasally voice, seems rude and unhelpful. Has the most boring lectures, no entertainment. The textbooks were only used for one part of the course and her explanations of 3 quarters of the course were hardly understandable.
Excellent prof!!! remove all bad comments bout her..key to succeeding is visiting her in office hours for essays and assignments..tests are not that hard if u learn ur stuff!! same with every class in reality..it is not hard to understand. spend 3-4 hours per week apart from lecture. Fair marker and makes a dry subject look very interesting
I had her for modr 1730 and I find that she is really nice and is good at explaining the concepts. If you have her as a t.a as well make sure you do your homework because she may call on you to give your answers. She is really helpful and explains what she is looking for in the assignments.
Very good teacher with an excellent grasp of the material.
Excellent professor, very helpful and approachable. Explained complex material in an understandable way. Good way to lean Modes of Reasoning.
Excellent professor with great attitude towards teaching students. Highly recommended to take any course with her. More than willing to help.
At first I thought I didn't really like this prof, however it turned out she is much nicer than it may seem! She is willing to help you with any difficulties you might be having in her course, just make sure you go to her office hours! Put in a decent amount of effort and ended with an A. Course material is lols at times.
Avoid this prof at all cost!!!! Not a good prof. Very unclear about her expectations and doesn't have any structure to her teaching
Not interesting. Ruins your GPA. You must attend all lectures and tutorials for 27 weeks.
Course itself is challenging But professor is very helpful Should do homework prior to the class
She needs to be much more organized in terms of having a guideline for the day's discussion and she needs to focus on staying on topic. She gets off topic very easily and discusses her personal life. She also shows up late often and does not know how to use any of the technology for the lesson or even how to google effectively.
Professor Davis is super helpful when you go to her outside office hours. She can get off topic at times, but overall she really wants her students to succeed and understand the material. She's a fairly hard maker though, so make sure you spend a significant amount of time on your work. Definitely GO TO CLASS.
not very friendly. unfair. would not recommend.
I tried to be friendly to her but she always scowled at me, I even heard her mutter about me and a few peers once, which I found rude. Wished her a happy holidays and she turned her head away- she heard me. Not enough feedback before course drop date to know how you're doing in the class.
At first professor Davis may come off as a bit strict, and potentially a bit strange. However, I've gotten to realize that she's got the best interest of her students in mind, and actually describes very difficult terms in a simplified way. I also found that it wasn't required to do all the reading because this class is in my major.
Professor Davis is very helpful. Her slides are posted online, her lectures are crystal clear and she is always ready to go off the beaten path with student ideas, suggestions, or to help. I had a lot of fun in her 1770 class and would definitely take it again. You will make her laugh as much as she makes you laugh.
Honestly having attend every single class of hers but lectures were too long and she always went off topic. Marking she is okay but not the nicest. She wont round up your grade. Gives too much homework and readings. I would never take her again
She seems really stern and untolerating at first, but once you warm up to her she's actually a wonderful professor. Knows her subject, teaches it well, and she will help you, just get her to know who you are and demonstrate you take the class seriously. She will take care of the rest
Terrible. She talks about her personal life way too much. Does not clearly define terms or material. Her lecture was only 50 minutes and spending 20 minutes talking about herself was completely useless to me. I will avoid her courses going forward.
If you are a math or science person you probably won't like it because the answers aren't always logical, seriously! It's all about patterns not about the accuracy or correctness of a statement. Other than that Professor Davis ended a little early on most days, and lightened the mood occasionally with stories. Overall good course.
She will easily go on tangents about her personal life, however her lectures are helpful and really explain the readings a lot better. Tutorial participation is mandatory. Only 3 short essay responses based off of readings, one EASY test and one long essay. Good class to take for an elective.
Her weekly quizzes are absolutely ridiculously hard, with like 5 or 6 different options, all of which are very similar, I feel like they were made just bring the class average down. She says she is not trying to trick you on her quizzes, but this couldn't be farther from the truth. Avoid this class unless you want a prof who ensures failure for all
I initially took this class because everyone said it was an easy A. Well I'm afraid to burst your bubbles but this was by far the worst class I've ever taken in my entire life. I'm an A student and for both my essays i got a D!!! I basically failed the class and it only angers me because NO ONE SHOULD TAKE THIS CLASS. All my friends failed to!!!!!!
Attendance makes a huge difference, her slides are vague and testbook is only helpful for practice questions/homework assigned. Attendance also counts for marks. Boring prof, gets off topic easily, always talking about her personal life which takes up a lot of time in lecture. Forces group work towards the end of each course.
Favourite professor at York. Expectations are very clear, posts all powerpoints online. Lectures are informative, may talk about her personal life but it makes her more likeable and relatable. She is a tough marker as she does not round up grades but she is very helpful in getting you the best grade possible. Go to class and you should pass!
She is a rude prof , sometimes she talks and laughs loudly when discussing politics or personal matters with students.I had to go to her intolerable lectures and listen to her stuff for 8 months because of participation mark. She marks essays based on personal preferences. Not a good prof for non native students . Try some other prof.
Don't take her class. I took her a few years ago and I still despise her to this day. By far the most unjust marker and very biased. one time when I went to discuss my marks with her she agreed that she read my essay wrong BUT THEN SAID the mark was already submitted! I was intimidated then but now I'd complain at the faculty she's teaching for!!!
STAY AWAY FROM HER
Literally despised this professor, absolutely rude and super hard marker. Would never take again. I rate this prof 0/5.
I love Dr. Davis (be careful, though, if you don't call her Dr. or Prof. she WILL correct you!). She's funny and very easy to understand. Her class was closer to a seminar than a lecture. Essays have a pretty clear outline of what she wants, the 1 test we did wasn't too hard. She makes you take notes on paper, but I didn't need to take many anyway.
she is very rude prof and though grader.
Failed her class due to her being very condescending and inability to communicate properly with me. I am an adult and didn't appreciate being talked to as if I were a teenager coming out of high school. I will NEVER take a class taught by her ever.
The class was almost always 3hrs long when it didn't have to be (could have easily been done in an hour). Teamwork counted for 10% of your grade so you had to go to almost every class. The test/assignments were easy as long as you kept up with lectures. I personally never used the textbook & still got through. Pretty simple course if you keep up!
I took her online course. I found it extremely easy to stay on track with the weekly assignments and quizzes. The course material was solely based on the lecture slides and recordings. I never even opened my textbook and still received an A in this course.
Worst prof. Extremely difficult. Attendance mandatory. Rambles about readings. Not a lecture, more seminar setting small class and treats students like a high school class.
Honestly, probably one of the most understanding professors I've met. She makes lectures fun and enjoyable. Might not seem like it at first, but is a really nice, funny person.
This professor is very professional, and fair when it comes to grading. She gives you so many opportunities to ask for help or clear up a concept you do not understand. Unlike so many Yorku profs, she makes her own exams, therefore if you do not attend lectures and don't do the assignment sheets, you are almost guaranteed to do bad on the midterm.
Had to drop this class because of how awful this course was taught. The other profs for MODR1770 did tests and assignments, and with the content of the class that would be so much easier. her class is purely essay based and she is not an easy marker, shes so rude on email too I literally could not ask anything without an attitude based response
I have nothing against Davis since she is just an instructor for this course. However, her lecture videos are too monotone. Watchin it, is the most painful experience I've ever had at York. Also this course has too much readings, writing, and quizzes. It's the most difficult I've had in my 5 years at York. Nothing about it is an easy mark trust me
Overall Prof Davis was good! For a 1st year course, the grading is pretty tough (mind you the TA's do most of the marking). Not an easy A and the course material itself is a little depressing. However, Prof Davis is obviously very intelligent and I like the seminars she holds. She is also helpful if you reach out for help. Show up to class though!
follow the rubric and you should be ok. She gives chances for bonus marks which can save you big time!
This course has a lot of readings and the essay assignments were marked hard. The course lectures were organized well and were straight to the point. The prof also held extra office hours which were super helpful! Attend tutorials and make sure you complete all the readings to do well!
Phil 1100 is definitely not a bird course like I heard. The essays are marked strictly and the quizzes are hard. There is a lot of reading in the course but lectures recordings were short. Attend tutorials and live lectures to do good because without them the material is hard to digest. Prof Davis made lecture videos understandable though.
Overall, this course was light work. Prof Davis is a hard marker in comparison to other profs. She is very nice and cares about students if you ask for help and are respectful of her. The material / lectures are a bit boring
Lectures are monotonous and inconsistent- sometimes she'll go into great detail & other times she'll have nothing more to offer than reading the disjointed bullet points that require fleshing out. Of course, you'll need to know all the info she DOESN'T say. Readings are LONG & poorly written- must read ahead of time. Provides no feedback on papers.
Professor Davis appear to be intimating in the beginning however she is the opposite. She has a great sense of humor and interesting lectures. You have to keep up with the course material because there is a quiz every week for practice. She also gives you 5% bonus marks for activities like participating in the class or attending her office hours.
Professor has boring lectures and honestly speaking from my experience I would recommend not taking the course with this prof. Grading is somewhat questionable and if you decide to not come to class you'll receive lower grades as there's group work every class which was inconvenient. Hard/inconsistent marker, want a good GPA avoid this prof.
Please save yourself and don't take
I don't say this often, but i really did not like her or enjoy her classes. She rambled and went off-topic so much, taking up the whole 3 hours. She sometimes swore at students and was rude. I dreaded coming to her classes. I did enjoy the group work. Her grading is hard for a first-year course. Would definitely not take it again
She's a bit rude, don't put your hand up she may give you an attitude. Also she rambles on a lot about off topic stuff, one time she started ranting about men and the patriarchy and some other stuff idk. Avoid if you can
Attendance is mandatory and worth 10% of grade, group work for every class but only marked as completion and you were there. Just follow her exact guidelines and examples she provides and you will do fine.
Had her last winter term for PHIL 1100 meaning of life. Overall solid professor. Very dry sense of humour, but I didn't mind it. Solid lecture videos if you don't feel like going to class. Quick response time, even during the craziness of the strike.
Hilary Davis's lectures can be hit or miss, but engaging with the material and using resources like Unstuck AI alongside the textbook can really help. The grading is tough, but office hours are useful if you need support.
Thought it was going to be a bird course but its very hard, lectures at the beginning sound interesting and concepts seem easy to grasp until a few weeks later, have to know a lot and the major essay is very hard.
good teacher, straight forward and kind. but takes foreverrrrrrrr to grade! example, i just got my grade back as the semester ends for an assignment i submitted before reading week. horrible.
This professor was so rude and is a tough grader, has a lot of attitude, if you are thinking of taking PHIL1100, trust me, worst idea you can do.
Dr. Davis is an outstanding professor, and her accelerated 6-credit blended course was one of the best-designed I've taken. The learning experience was thoughtfully structured. Show up to class, engage with both online and in-person material, and participate in conversations with her, and you'll do great, undoubtedly!
This class is really tough, took it thinking it was a bird course. The lectures are hard to understand, and the way the prof talks can feel kind of rude or dismissive. There's also a lot of essay writing and heavy reading, which makes it even more overwhelming. Would never take this course again. Beware.
Prof Davis was a great professor for MODR 1730. I was scared that it would be bad as it was a 3 hour lecture, but it wasn't because she made lectures very entertaining. She made the content fairly easy to understand and interacted w the class regularly, helping w the learning and my engagement. She's pretty hard on marking tho so beware of that !!
Strict, but very caring and you can learn lots from her lectures. Overall, great prof and would take again.
The course content is excellent, I really enjoyed it. She's a hard marker, especially on essay, but the test is reasonable
