Her standards are very high...but if you put the time into your work, you'll be rewarded...so don't expect an easy grade.she hates cluttered writing..so get rid of all the fillers.learned a great deal from her but my GPA did drop as a result

This prof is the sole reason I chose medieval lit as a major. Her lectures are nothing short of inspired and they will leave with with an amazing feeling and a sense of inspiration. TAKE HER CLASS, but don't expect an easy ride.

Her lectures are OK. However, her marking is too strict. She drops most international students, saying, "This is not an ESL class."

Hilary is an amazing prof and person. She is very willing to help out and expects nothing short of the best from her students. She will push you to do well and you will actually learn something. She is wonderful.

If you go to class and take notes then she is a pleasant and enthusiastic prof. Gives excellent advice and knows what she is talking about. A tough marker but fair and gives decent, constructive feedback for future assignments. I'd gladly have her again.

Hilary is amazing! She is lots of fun and makes the course interesting. She does not like people who slack off and expect to get a good grade, why should she? I strongly recommend her as a prof.

Hilary is dramatic and makes a long hour and a half class fun. She knows a lot and is good at lecturing. She's picky about grammar but it's helpful.

Very tough prof. Taking her class during a regular school year would be much more beneficial. I took in in the summer with very limited time for her to instruct us on how to write a decent paper. Nevertheless, it's good prep for future english courses.

I took her first year class 5 years ago. She's a great teacher. Very encouraging. I loved her stories (complete with accents!) about arguing the merits of Joyce in an Irish pub. Is she still wearing those boots? Take her class! You'll like it!

Contrary to other comments, I found her to be interesting, hilarious and helpful. I'm now doing my Bachelor's of Education at UBC, and I STILL think about her class from time to time. She's also the friendliest prof I've had. If you work hard, you'll do fine.

Although Knight can be a tightass, her lectures are interesting. She's good and she knows it. Keep your head up and you'll do fine.

Entertaining lectures (especially before the novel/drama work actually begins--it's all downhill from there). Tough marker. Why the unnecessary difficulty for a first-year class? Not an easy English elective; choose another Prof for that. Learned surprisingly little. Very likable woman though.

I really like Hilary. She is tough, that's true, but she helped me alot and I ended up with a good grade in her class --why? Because I worked for it. Her lectures are fascinating and she has a wicked sense of humour. I like being challenged by professors and that's what I pay my money for. If you're looking for easy street, get out of uni.

One of the few good teachers i've had at UVic. Its true she can mark harshly, but why should you expect her to let go english errors when it is an english class? Lectures were good as well.

Don't expect a good mark unless you wring your brain out thoroughly and get every last bit of juice onto the page. Quizes? Read DETAILS (like lines in songs in Much Ado, professions of insignificant chars). Lectures? Best in the world! She's a great person, I love her British humour, and she's very sweet. Teachers who push us beyond our recognizable limits are the ones that give us the most knowledge and improvement. Yes... she's incredibly tough, but very willing to help. She is fair. If you're an idiot and do stupid things like show up late for class and don't read the books, then good luck. Otherewise, give her a chance to help you.

She expects a LOT out of her students, but in return she expects her students to expect a LOT out of HER. If you're going to wine about having to do a lot of work and having to live up to high expectations than she is not the prof for you... Grow up and welcome to university.

I've got to say she's the best prof I've ever had. Granted I am partial to the material, but I found she was a really entertaining lecturer. If you're not passionate about literature, don't take one of her classes, because she doesn't do anything other than stand there and lecture, but I found her funny and really informative. Loved her class.

Class is not bad. found it frustrating at times as a male due to the aggressive emphasis on feminism and my friend was offended by careless remarks about christianity. makes wild leaps of faith for strange metaphors and connections to Jungian psychology (another obsession of this prof) very opinionated, but with good observations and good material

Somehow manages to link everything to Carl Jung - no matter the subject. Other than that, entertaining and polite. Not a super easy marker, but I had fun.

absolutley great teacher, easy to follow and effective in explaining key elements of books such as the edible women. helpful when a class has been missed to make sure you catch up with the rest of the class. tons of fun, allowing for a better learning experience

Interesting class and entertaining lectures! Just make sure you take real good notes, and reread them before the midterm/final. Yeah, and make sure you actually read the books too.

I liked her. When she lectures, she sometimes throws in a bunch of completely un-related things...which are usually quite funny! Clearly enjoys the material she teaches, as she is always laughing while lecturing. VERY strict on attendance, keeping up on the reading, and participation in class. If you take a class with her, be prepared to work hard!

After reading the comments on this page I was terrified to take Knight's class. However, she is a great prof. She cares only if YOU care. She offers to take students out for coffee to talk about whatever difficulty they are having! Of course those looking for an easy A are mad, she expects you to work for your A and truly learn English. Great Prof!

Awesome as a person - she's "bouncy" and funny, and usually quite nice. She turned otherwise boring lectures into something relatively interesting. But she's a very tough marker. No slacking off in her class.

unless you enjoy having views forced on you by a complacently arrogant old woman i suggest you pass on this one. Terminates any form of free thought by telling you in lecture what she knows the symbolic emphasis to be and expects to see these exact words in your essays. snore.

She definitely wasn't an easy prof, but if you show up to class, keep up with the notes, and do all of the assignments you'll do fine! She gives great lectures, chooses interesting books, and because she gives quizzes, a midterm, and a final, you can still do good if your writing skills aren't perfect. My writing definitely did improve though.

I took Hilary's class about 4 years ago, and looking back, I appreciate her. She prepared me extremely well for upper level English courses, as well as grad school, by challenging me to do better. If you're an English major, and truly want to improve, take her class. She's tough, but I guarantee you'll find yourself reminiscing about her later!

Well prepared for class. Was passionate about the subject, making it easy to learn! If you have any problems, she will take time out of her schedule to meet with you. Very helpful. Hard marker, but makes the subject so interesting that it's worth the extra work. I highly recommend this professor! I changed my minor to English because of her!
