This class is interesting and a good science alternative. She is friendly and funny, and clear. She wants you to do well.
This prof is very good. Lectures are well organized, material is presented in an easy to understand format. Always willing to answer questions. Class is very interesting. Overall a good professor
There is a lot of material for class and she does a good job presenting it all. She though everybody was taking class for "fun" and made tests very hard and she always had a look on her face like she was pissed.
She is a great professor. She is very knowledgable in her field and she me got interested in viticulture and enology. The test questions can be very specific, so make sure you study the reader thoroughly.
Good lecturer. MIdterm wasn't too hard. Going to lectures are pretty important however. If you go to lecture you won't need to study much extra. Recommended.
Great teacher.
Heymann was great, one of my favorite professors. Very clear in lecture, slides are very informative, and the tests are easy IF YOU STUDY THE READER/COME TO CLASS. She also tells you funny stories if you ask questions!
Very good teacher. Lectures are interesting and present imformation very well. Tests are sometimes specific so make sure you go over everything in the reader. I recommend this class.
she is a great lecturer who makes wine interesting! the tests are very specific. go over the reader thoroughly. i am more interested in wine from this class! the field trip to the campus winemaking area was cool. a highly recommended professor and class!
I guess this class could be easy. For someone like me, I couldn't memorize all the little details that were in the reader and the notes. Her questions were sometimes tricky, but it was a very interesting class.
Stay away from this this instructor, she is one of the worst instructors at UC Davis. Her lectures are boring and have nothing to do with the exams. The class is all about memorizing the finer details and she doesn't give partial credit if you mispell a french or latin word. She should not be teachin
She has to be one of the worst instructors I have ever had. She isn't even fit to teach at the junior college level.
Ms. Heyman is by far one of the worst instructors I have ever had. I recorded a few of her lectures to help treat my sleep apnea and am happy to report that I no longer need my sleep medication. Thank you for the boring lectures about a subject matter that no one but you cares about.
Heymann delivers a great deal of information in her lectures and by the end of the quarter you walk away knowing so much about the wine industry. I enjoyed her positive attitude and recommend this class and professor. And if you aren't interested in winemaking don't take the class, stupid.
Very boring and dull. Her exams cover material that are not in the required textbook or covered in lecture.
Excellent teacher who explains that this is not an easy course at the beginning at that you ACTUALLY HAVE TO DO SOME WORK!! She explains the material very well and yes sometimes material covered is not in the reader <-- SO DO SOME WORK!!
Good lecturer and tests are very straightforward. All you have to do is read and understand the ENTIRE reader (which is not very long) and you’ll be fine. Go to lecture because she gives extra credit pop quizzes that are 5% of your overall grade and are fairly easy. You DO have to put work into the class and if you do you’ll get an A.
Easy class if you're good at memorizing and attend ALL the lectures, because the pop quizzes do affect your grade. She's very clear about her expectations of her students and presents material in a straightforward manner.
shes an okay professor... lectures are a bit dull and exams cover a lot of unnecessary and specific information... ven3 isnt that bad tho, u mite think ur failing but ull end up with a B.
Very interesting class. If you like wine and have a background in agriculture this class is an easy "A". If not, attend class/study the class reader and you should get at least a "B".
VEN3 isn't as cool as it sounds. Go ahead and take it if you really like wine making. Other than that its a good way to fall asleep in... Teacher is very thorough. Class is relatively easy but boring as hell.
She's very thorough and very upfront about her expectations. She requires you to know a LOT more then you'd think was important so study a LOT!
She is not a bad professor but the tests require you to know almost everything from the lectures & the reader. She also gives pop quizzes that DO help you.. even if you get all the answers wrong she will give you a 100% so go to class.. there are usually 4 and they end up giving you 12% of your grade in extra credit! it saves you trust me!!!!
Self indulgent and pompous she believes her class to be THE most important. Expect to work hard and learn a lot of deleterious material in order to do well. Treats winemaking like a 5 unit science course, has serious problems.
expect to work hard. she provides A LOT of information; lectures, online slides, reader. you only use a reader for the class- read it! it's the basis of the midterm and final. only 2 other quizzes worth 15 points each; although coming to class isn't mandatory, she has a lot of extra credit pop quizzes- so go to class. memorize pretty straightforwar
Intro to wine-making. Memorization is the key and the bad part is there are pop quizzes... and even tho she says they are extra-credit... if you dont go to class that day, you get a 0 out of 3 for the pop quiz. the beginning is boring with all the processes, but later it gets more interesting because she talks about the wines of different countries
Prof. Heymann is very passionate about the material, which makes the class interesting. A lot of material is covered and must be memorized. Exams and quizzes are not too difficult. As long as you're there to take the pop quiz you get full credit that can add up to an actual 12 percentage points.
So awesome. Extremely interesting material made even more interesting by her lectures. Everyone says spring quarter is the best, but I really liked this class.
be prepared to memorize everything! this class is interesting, but could be more fun. tests/quizzes are all scantron and aren't that difficult. all questions come directly from reader, even though lectures don't reflect it. class isn't really mandatory but there are pop quizzes that count as extra credit and can boost your grade!
Go tothe lectures. The 3 points are given wether you get all three questions right or not. I got 12 points tacked onto my final grade. Love her!!!
She used to give the extra credit, but since 30 people "cheated" on them, she stopped giving them and incorporated extra questions onto the exams, which are nitpicky. You cannot neglect this class and expect to get an A... so be prepared to study facts. She is an expert at her field, and she expects you to be as well.
This professor is definately knowledgeable in her field. BUT the class itself is hard. You must study the reader for at least 2 hours a day then you'll pass the class. There are no more extra credit pop quizzes. Exams and quizzes are specific and tricky. Don't take this class unless you absolutely love wine!
She's extremely knowledgable, and the class is super-interesting, but the exams are extremely detail oriented and she is purposely tricky on them. I wouldn't recommend it unless you are great at memorizing random facts.
i've never failed a class and i am failing this class. her tests are sooo specific. i feel like this class is similar to math... you either know it or you don't. once you're behind, it's hard to catch up. DO NOT take this class if you're looking for an A or B. C is the average. HATED THIS CLASS! She's kinda funny but very strict. =/
Honestly: This is the worst course I have ever taken and this is my 3rd year in college. She expects A LOT of pointless memorization but teaches you nothing. The reason she got this job is because she is so imposing (she is a giant woman, over 6 feet tall). NO CONCEPTS or foundation for the material is presented. Don't take this class!
Tough, but doable. Study the booklet, and put extra info from slides in margins, makes studying easier. Quizzes are super hard, but midterms/finals are better. STUDY!!
she is not clear and the class is hard. This is suppose to be an introductory class, but it's not. It makes you hate vitaculture. Don't take this class, it makes you ahte the subject. The professor the worst.
HARD class! you will only do well if you are able to remember 90 course-reader pages of information. exam questions are very specific. i do not recommend this class unless you are a great memorizer. lectures are boring and it is hard to understand what the professor is saying but, luckily, powerpoints are online. this class requires a lot of wo
I don't know why she had a smiley face! This class is ridiculously hard and she is not helpful at all. There is way too much material to remember for a subject that people know very little about to begin with (unless this is your major). She is unclear and tests are WAY too detailed.
I am under the impression based on previous comments that she used to give extra credit and pop quizzes. She no longer does that. Attendance is not mandatory. Exams and Midterms/finals are VERY HARD! Be prepared to study alot of details.
If you have an interest in wine the class is worth taking. There is a lot of memorizing though so make sure to stay on top of material. She's pretty nice and interesting and she wants to make the class fun. Not too much reading. She's good at explaining things. Class isn't too bad at all if you have an interest in wine.
Professor Heymann did a fine job presenting a really interesting subject. Answers any questions you might have and clearly loves the material. You really have to go to class, pay attention, and supplement with the reader but this was not difficult because the topic was so interesting. There is a lot of "memorization". my easiest class this quarter
Great lecturer. Passionate about winemaking and was, overall, a great intro class. Take it to satisfy your curiosity but remember, there's a lot of "facts" to memorize as a lot of the lecture topics covered were not conceptual. Definitely not an easy A but you wouldn't need to spend hours studying like you would for o-chem.This was one cool class!
This class in no way is "easy." It requires a lot of time to memorize ridiculously minute details that don't exactly test your knowledge of the material presented. She is a great lecturer, and obviously is very interested in the material. It's one of the hardest classes i've ever taken. Go to Class!
Everyone says this class is impossible, but if you study (flashcards are the way to go) you will do fine. The professor is funny, and very knowledgeable about her subject. Definitely take this class!
WHY DOES SHE HAVE A SMILEY FACE??!! Did I not take Ven3 like everyone else? She is a terrible prof! Too hard of a class w/ impossible memorization. She also told the whole class they would get 5% extra credit for attending class RIGHT before she passed out the prof evaluation! Then later that evening emailed everyone saying she took it all away!!!
Dude, this class is easy. Just go to class, which is actually pretty interesting because it teaches you how to be a wino. Not going to lie, the tests do suck bc you have to memorize the exact differences. Answers on a test can be like: syrah, sirah, and petite syrah, and she expects you to know the difference. You can get an "A" if you try
1 of the WORST classes I have taken in my whole 21 years on planet earth. Heymann is a TERRIBLE prof! She promised our class 5% ex. cred. for showing up - right before she handed out PROF EVALUATIONS! That night she sent an email telling us our extra credit would not count! She is HORRIBLE! Tests are terrible, lecture is terrible, she is terrible!
What you learn is fun and interesting, but her tests are definately not a true test on one's knowledge of making wine. She goes out of her way to try and trick you, sets you up for a grade you won't be happy with. Tests are so bad it makes the class not fun. I wouldn't recommend the class.
THIS IS THE HARDEST INTRO CLASS AT UCD.IMPOSSIBLE CLASS TO PASS ITS RIDICULOUS DONT EVER EVER EVER EVER TAKE THIS CLASS EVER
She is a good professor but this class is RIDICULOUSLY HARD! If you're not a Ven major, do not take "for fun." The tests are too indepth for an intro to wine class. It is impossible to memorize everything on top of her tricky tests. In no way should this be an intro class, PERIOD. Read the reader, go to class, and review slides online& you may pass
She tests on a lot of random trivia despite emphasizing other things in lecture. If taking it for fun, take it pass/no pass to be on the safe side.
If you have a bad memory, DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS. She tests you on everything . BUT what I noticed is that she tests on mostly the BOLD terms in the textbook. But she also tests stuff that are not in the textbook. All you do is memorize, but there is a LOT , A LOT of stuff to memorize. Her exams are HARD because you have to KNOW the exact answer!
I strongly recommend not taking this class if you are worried about your GPA. This is the first teacher that I have had throughout college who clearly makes a goal at helping students fail out. She is not very friendly and as far as guidance for the final she eplains that it covers "anything in the reader, or anything in lecture".
Personally I really liked her- she's no-nonsense and clear, and it IS possible to get an A in her class (I did) if you man up a little and actually study. If you're looking for an easy A that you don't have to work for then I don't recommend her, but if you like the subject and are self-disciplined, then she's a good professor.
I went to every lecture, read the reader and studied for all quizzes and tests. I pulled off a B but just barely. As a professor she knows her stuff and it was a VERY interesting class, but I took it hoping for an easy 3 unit class and it was anything but. Take it, but only if you're prepared to put in a decent amount of effort.
She warns you first day of class that it's all memorization and she's not joking. She doesn't mention how she tests on the minute details and expects you to know the reader back to front. It IS interesting (and almost worth it just for Dr. Lapsley's lecture) but hard work. Take it pass or no pass if you just want the units.
This class was horrible! I was interested in wine before, now I don't even want to drink it. Her tests are ridiculous. I read everything, went to every lecture, studied and still barely pulled a B-. She is not helpful at all, I went to her office hours and she basically told me she can't help me. DO NOT TAKE HER. She treats students like children.
You have to basically memorize the coursebook . I got a B ONLY because I memorized EVERYTHING and I do mean EVERYTHING!!! Pay more attention to the BOLDED terms and memorize them. The averages were around 60. If you do not have a good memory, I suggest you take another class! She is kind of mean too...
I have a lot of respect for this professor. Its not an easy class, lots of memorization, and tricky multiple choice tests. She is also very strict, won't allow talking or cell phones or any sort of distractions from lecture. But if you're interested, I definitely recommend this class.
Knowledgeable, patronizing. As previously alluded to, she revoked extra credit, as was her right to do, but her way of going about it was quite rude.
Touts a mean exam score of 69% as "exactly what it should be". Presents graphs showing that most students achieve a final C grade or lower. Another learned person who will not teach. Test answers sometimes conflict with actual text/slide citations, in which case, it is claimed that the answer was from lecture. Something sort of sick about it. Avoid
Dr. Heymann is one of the most interesting lecturers in the V&E department. The information she provides is practical and insightful. She will not tolerate anything except excellence from her students. She is more than helpful: willing to meet any time providing invaluable guidance. You will learn so much from her if you simply apply yourself.
Holy jesus, this is the hardest class I have ever taken. I dont mean hard as in Calculus, I can take calculus, I mean hard as in Memorizing hard. If you arent willing to make hundreds of flashcards and memorize a 30 page handbook then this class is not for you! Wish I would have checked this out before the class. I officially HATE wine now.
This is the hardest class I have ever come across in all of my years as a student. You will have to memorize essentially all lectures and the 80 page book ENTIRELY to get anything higher than a C. Class average was around 65%. That should say it all. If you have gotten an A in every class you have ever taken, you would be lucky to get a B-here.
Course is online 122VID251. Online extension for credit towards winemaking certificate. Dr. Heymann is unhelpful, tests on things that are marginally covered or not in the notes or lecture. Interactions with Dr. Heymann leave a lot to be desired. Worst grade on the midterm ever received. Seems knowledgeable on subject.
Pro: She's clearly an expert, and can answer just about any wine-related question. Con: Tests emphasize memorization of facts, some of them somewhat obscure--but knowing this, studying is straightforward. Among other things, you learn how to read wine labels, which has practical use when shopping. Class wasn't fun, but it was interesting.
Heed the many reviews about this course and professor. If you don't, then you deserve whatever grade you get. Your grade is 100% based on your quiz/exam performance. There are no assignments and no participation credit is given. Thus, there is nothing to buffer a poor test grade but another test grade. Choose this class/professor CAREFULLY!
DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS UNLESS REQUIRED BY YOUR MAJOR. I know this seems extreme but its a 3 unit class that is harder then any other class I have taken in the 4 years I've attended UC Davis. Chemistry, Calculus, Biology, Political Science all MUCH easier. Her quizzestests require perfect memorization of obscurespecific details.
DO NOT take this class unless you are doing passno pass or it is required by your major. Tests are obscenely unforgiving and focus on minute and obscure details. This is supposed to be an intro class, and although the information is basic the tests will kill your grade and your overall GPA. Professor herself is not helpful. Do not take.
The V & E department at Davis is serious, so don't expect an easy pass. You must attend lectures to see what she wants you to know, and you must review your notes to remember the details. This class is meant to prepare students in the major for upper division, be prepared to work hard, but learn an insane amount in one quarter.
DON'T TAKE THIS CLASS, UNLESS IS FROM YOUR MAJOR. Have to memorize such stupid things. The important details(in my low knowledge) about winemaking are not required at all. The professor herself is not helpful.
Will without question say that her teaching style is not supportive. Takes a punitive stance towards introducing her students to what could otherwise be a very interesting topic (for 125 at least). Her lab is equally dismal. Competent researcher, very poor educator. If possible, avoid her.
Worst teacher at UC Davis. I have multiple degrees, and have taken a large number of courses. In the last decade she is the absolute worst educator I have encountered. TERRIBLE. Luckily I'm not taking this class for a grade. Don't attempt to get feedback, and dont expect to be fairly and sensibly assessed on your understanding of class material.
She can be a bit intimidating, however this is the only A+ I have received in all of college. I suggest getting on her good side.
Her lectures are actually quite interesting and she's very knowledgeable. Despite this, she is quick to make judgments about her students and you better hope you end up on her good side. She also isn't very clear about what her tests will be on, so study literally everything.
I very tough professor. No curves in class. Tests are tough. Hard for undergraduates to survive in her class.
As much as I respect her, I cannot believe that she is a teacher. The lectures are often interesting, but not very helpful at all for the exams, which are based on her textbook... and it's very thick and a very hard read. This is essentially an applied statistics class. After spending 13 hours on the first poster, I dropped her lab section.
Extremely tough grader. Work hard and stay on her good side
Hildegarde is a well respected researcher at UC Davis, and essentially runs the sensory science. Undergrads may have it hard as they are in the same grade scale as grad students. She is somewhat unstable at times. There should be another prof but you have to do it (B/C you are V&E), so do NOT skip class. Know your ANOVA/ GO TO practice with TAs.
Agree with other comments; don't get on her bad side. Lacks empathy and communication could be improved.
Hildegarde has a learn-by-doing approach to teaching. Grades quickly and responds to emails fast. Very particular for submissions and does not handle change/flexibility well. Emails are, more often than not, cold and blunt, but you'll learn that it's just her style: stern, punctual, and unapologetic. Don't take it personally.
