Absolutely love him he's so sweet and really wants you to learn. I remember reading somewhere that people found him tough so I was skeptical but I got to know him and he's super friendly and easy to reach out to. He replies quickly to emails and puts your mental health first, he really does care about you as a person not just as a student.
Dr. von Strunck really does care about what he teaches and that makes his lectures enjoyable. The syllabus is what we stuck to the entire semester and it's important to keep track of. In Foundations, exams are 100% of our grade - however the required textbook has practice quizzes and they're basically the same as the test. Would take him again!
Amazing professor. Cares so much about the well-being of all his students. Lectures were great as well but not mandatory. Showed up every day with a smile on his face. Intriguing lectures. Only grades were 5 tests which were identical to the practice quizzes. Totally recommend. Awesome guy.
He is an awesome professor. He knows what he’s talking about and really wants his students to do well. Exams were online and were very straight forward if you studied by taking the practice quizzes. Always had funny stories to say and was very enthusiastic about learning!
Highly recommend reading the textbook. Lectures are directly based off of the textbook; however, in class he breezes through the slides and skips important information and explanations. Exams are just like the practice quizzes. Sometimes there are a few questions that seem random, but they are definitely fair.
I had Dr. von Strunck for both Abnormal and Developmental Psychology, and his teaching style is pretty much the same across both courses. He's very passionate about psychology and encourages thoughtful discussions in class. Lectures are very important to exam material, but the homework/practice quizzes are equally (or arguably more) important!
Professor Von Strunck loves psychology and you can notice this through his lectures. He truly loves what he is teaching and it makes the class even more engaging. The final grade is based on 5 exams and homework. As long as you pay attention, and practice before exams, you should be good!
The most amazing professor!!! Super smart and it shows, he really knows what he is talking about! Also super funny and engaging, makes you want to come to class. The online learning structure is great and the practice quizzes are just like the exam. Loved it so much I am taking another class from him in the fall!
Truly passionate about psych, tried to engage with students. Homework is time consuming but easy, lectures and practice tests are exactly like exams, and exams take max 30 mins. Posts everything online, accessible after class, but very strict about grades (no curving or leniency). As long as you do the practice tests, you will do great in the class
He's very nice and truly tries his best to make psych interesting. Tests are not too bad, just be sure to review the textbook beforehand. He tells the best jokes also!
Attendance was "mandatory" but not graded, yet he targeted people who chose to not attend class by reporting us at risk to fail & emailing counselors (regardless of grade). Taught 1 lecture himself, the rest were student presentations (again, required but not graded). Tests are made from infinite (not graded) connect questions/assignments.
He was the worst professor I've ever had! First of all, he doesn't lecture at all. Divided us into 8 different groups and make us teach in class while he sits at the back listening to the presentations. Quizzed/tested us on content that he did not teach but insisted that he taught them. Anyone in that class can agree that he did not teach at all.
Von Struncks's developmental psych class is the hardest/most involved psych classes I've taken. You have to do the readings to do well in this class, and they are pretty long. But it's so worth it, because it ended out being my favorite psych class ever as well! Von Strunck is the best. He's super funny and caring.
Dr. von Strunck is an amazing psych professor. This class is all about putting in the work. Exams are difficult. You have to memorize everything in the textbook and be able to apply the knowledge on the exams. Heavy on memorizing but exams aren't too bad. Exams make up the whole final grade. 5 exams each 20%. Very engaging and classes are fun.
Unhelpful. He puts up slides and reads them. Half the time he goes too fast and stands in the way of the board. He doesn't post the slides afterward. Everything is based on the textbook-generated exams and if you meet with him you can tell he has never even seen the questions before. Exams are 100% of your grade so you just have to teach yourself.
Not a fan of this man as a professor. He seems really nice, but he just cannot teach to save his life. In order to do well in this class you have to read the textbook and even then the tests are pretty hard. Don't take this class if you are bad at test taking.
He was a solid professor and had enjoyable lectures. His tests were tough though and averages were often in the high 70s low 80s. For a class that is only graded on exams that is pretty scary. If you study the textbook you should be good though but even with that I still did not do great on the exams.
Really good professor for a beginner psychology class. His lectures are engaging and he is always open to questions and further discussion of certain topics. He is a very caring professor and really wants his students to do well. As long as you study with the resources he provides the tests should be pretty simple, 10/10 recommend him!
It seems like he cares about his students, but that is not reflected in the grading. I went to him one day and he told me that tests are not representative of someone's knowledge but still refused to change the grading. The averages were terrible and there was no curve. He also doesn't post his presentation notes and blocks them while in class.
Really bad teacher overall. Final grade determined by 4 midterms and 1 final, so very test heavy class. He doesn't curve and doesn't round. Seems like his slides are very old and sometimes have wrong info, so studying for the test was fully based on textbook since his lectures are so unhelpful. For a psych class, it was unreasonably hard.
only graded on five exams and there's no hw besides reading. you do have to read the entire textbook to do well. tests are the same as practice questions.Professor von struck is a little witty old man and he is super sweet but he refuse to give out lecture slides. please von struck they would've been so helpful for studying.
Dr. Von Strunck was fine, generally just inoffensive as a professor. He's funny, which can make his otherwise pretty dry lectures tolerable. Entire grade was based on 5 tests, all of which come directly from the textbook company. Read the chapters and do the practice problems and it's impossible to get anything below a 90.
truly an amazing professor. very funny, caring and helps students outside of class as well. his lectures are funny and you need to attend and study to do well on the exams. i would definitly recommend dr. van strunk again.
This was an absolutely great experience. Professor von Strunck was so enthusiastic about the subject and I learned a lot from him. He is funny, caring, and has a great personality. Great knowledge and you will do great if you read the book and pay attention in class.
There was no point in showing up to class. He just lectured on small ideas from the textbook. The tests were made from specific details about the textbook. You had to read the textbook and do the practice Hw that's not even graded repeatedly to do well on the tests. Mcgraw Hill made the tests not him. Might as well had been an online course.
Very thoughtful person and educator. He would like all of his students to attend so that they can engage with the material, but he is understanding of life unfolding and barring attendance. Be sure to communicate with him if you are not able to be the best student you can be, he is there to hear it. Will miss learning from Dr. Von Strunck.

Professor Von Strunck is a very funny and good lecturer. He provides many examples that help to better understand the concepts. Your entire grade is solely based off of 5 exams which can be very frustrating. If you read the textbook and do the practice exams you should be fine, but beware that the exams can be very tricky.

Truly an amazing professor. Dr von struck is funny and hilarious. Though lectures can be long he makes them very interesting, he knows his stuff and his knowledge is scary at times as he can always relate the info to every day life. Take his classes if you truly want to learn!
I think he is very overrated. There is no incentive of going to class because the textbook company makes the exams. The entire grade is based on 5 exams, 20% each. I attended maybe 5 lectures in total. You have to know everything on the chapters to do well in the exam. He is funny but that wasnt enough for me
Try getting any other professor for psych but him!! I walked into class expecting it to be enjoyable, but it wasn't. His slides had mistakes in it, and when corrected, he wouldn't admit he was wrong. Very ignorant to social justice issues as well. Grade based off 5 hard exams that are textbook-based. Rude teacher who didn't want to see us succeed.

I absolutely loved taking this course with Dr. von Strunck. A very insightful Professor with much knowledge and plenty of examples during class so you can understand and learn the different concepts of psychology. Funny guy as well with a very sarcastic humor. 5 exams determine your final grade, and the final is not a cumulative one.
I started writing down all of my issues but ran out of words pretty quick. In short, Prof Von Strunck made many mistakes (directly contradicting the textbook) which he refused to correct or admit to, was very difficult to reach out to for help, and generally made class very unenjoyable. I have never hated psychology more.

Prof. Von struck is awesome. Had fisrt exam yesterday and scored well. Lots of homework but counts to your final grade. It also helps on the exams. Funny guy. Knows his stuff, and super smart.
Had him freshman year loved him so I retook him this year for 3406. Tests are not hard at all, the rest of the grade is based on you showing up to class and completing some online activites to completion. Funny guy too always likes a good laugh and will challenge you when you are confident in your claims to push you to give a real explanation.
One of the best professors I have taken at NU. Very knowledgeable, caring, and knows how to engage students. This is my third class with Dr Von Strunk, and I can only recommend him. If you want to learn, take his classes.

Great guy but terrible lectures. All the homework is based on the textbook and all tests are generated through homework questions. Fun and entertaining class, however don't rely on his lectures because they can be incorrect. He doesn't ever know how to answer students questions based on the lectures either. He'll make you laugh though.
Professor von Strunck is an amazing Professor. Very intelligent guy who really makes you understand psychology stuff very well. Takes time to explain to students when they have questions. He asks a lot of questions during lectures and keeps the class engaged.
Prof. von Strunck was funny and an entertaining lecturer, but the lectures themselves were pretty useless in the grand scheme of things. The tests came directly from the info from the textbook -even the smallest details you may skim over- so reading the book is extremely important to do well in the class.
He basically just read off of the slides, which seemed a bit old (ex. graphs from 2015). If you keep up with the homework you should do fine, but try to actually do the readings as well. I felt the tests had very random questions on them that no one would know the answer to, since it was never gone over in class.
Prof. Von Strunck is a really funny guy who definitely wants his students to learn. However, all of the work he assigns is quizzes and assignments through an outdated textbook that are not relevant to the content on the lectures at all. Still a fun class.
This class isn't for everyone. If you need structure like study guides and slides to learn, or if reading the textbook isn't enough, be aware that you might struggle. Exams are challenging, and the textbook costs around $100.
Very Intelligent and funny guy. His test can be a bit hard but you lean a lot in his lectures. He really makes the material in class interesting with good examples so you better understand.
Professor Von Strunck is a very funny and intelligent guy. He reads case studies and the lectures are interactive and fun. The tests are easy if you do the work on the textbook website. The workload is very manageable and it all relates back to the tests. He really relates himself to the discussion and interacts with the students.
Dr. Von Strunk is a really nice guy but his lectures can be a little disorganized. However, towards the end of the semester they improved. Most of the grade is determined by tests, but 40% is through unlimited attempts on homework. Be ready to read your textbook and do the homework before the test since they are often on them.
While Dr. von Strunck is kind and humorous, these qualities are not enough to make up for his unfamiliarity with the course material. Every test and assignment for the class is generated by the textbook website, so reading the textbook is sufficient to do well in the class. The lectures are entertaining, but not useful.
Super nice and funny guy! Engage in his class and read the textbook and you'll be fine. DO YOUR ACHIEVE!!! Achieve is the main basis for tests and assignments and if you don't understand it you will not do well!! Otherwise, very easy to get a good grade.
He is very nice, but his teaching style is extremely ineffective. His class is based on Connect; the textbook and assignments are there. Exams are taken on Connect, and the questions are generated from the textbook, so if you don't have the whole chapter memorized, you'll never get a 100. He often contradicts the textbook and confuses us.
Great guy ans knows his stuff. Unfortunately there was almost no participation from the class who made it akwaed at time. I felt bad for him at times as literally people did not engage. Funny guy with lots of good life examples. Going to take another course with him in the fall.
Wohoooo. We made it. Dr von strunck os truly an amazing teacher. So much knowledge. I learned so much about disorders and how to apply dsm criteria. He does a lot of case studies. He reads them and then you have to figure out what the disorder is. Truly enyoyed the class. If you want to learn take his classes.
Half textbook Connect other half himself. I know he can add questions of his own since he put a joke from lecture in there, just wish he would add more things from lecture as everything was from the book. Has really great lectures and is funny and can be deep about topics unexpectedly but its hard to focus knowing I have to read 40 pages later
There's truly no need for him. Fails to communicate anything in lecture if you miss it (i.e., documentaries referenced on the final and whole in-class projects) and contradicts the textbook despite letting McGraw Hill make 100% of the tests and assignments. Succeeded in making an easy and interesting subject difficult to like, avoid if possible :)
Tough class but I learned a lot. He brings tons of books with case files to class that he reads and you have to find out what disorder it is. Laughs and says they are hard, when he well knows we'll figure it out easily. lol If you learn with Achieve, do your homework and come to class, you can easily get an A. See you in the fall prof. VonStrunk.

Vonstrunk makes lectures really interesting with many case files from which you learn a lot. does a lot of group work that helps understand the material. def. knows his stuff and often too smart for his own good. ;) take him if you want to know more about disorders in psych.
Thank you for a great and challenging semester Dr. VonStrunck. He does a lot of assignments that you can learn from for the test. If you study with Connect, go to lectures, and read your text, you will do well in this class.
The tests and final exam were made by the online textbook. When asked about content on the exam, he said he did not know what would be on it. Lectures were boring and mostly unhelpful. You'd be better off skipping and reading the textbook instead, but he took attendance randomly some days.
Exams covered material that wasn't talked about in class or in the study guides. I had to scour through the textbook for hours because I never knew what would be covered on the exams. He threw a tantrum when I asked him to give me a retake exam after he forgot to give me extra time. He didn't relent until DRC forced him to. Avoid if possible.

Says no laptops which is frustrating because it's hard to take handwritten notes and catch everything he says - but he forgets about this as class goes on. Doesn't take attendance until he realizes no one's showing up, then he starts. All homeworks are due by final day of class, which is nice but does not incentivize students. Lectures are boring.
AVOID! This course was frustrating due to the professor's 100% reliance on Macmillan Connect, with excessive homework and exams based on heavy textbook details. Lectures were unhelpful, slides were rushed, and writing assignments are random. Electronics weren't allowed for notetaking. Avoid this disorganized class.
Von Strunck is a great professor. A lot of your grade is based on achieve assignments and all his tests and assignments are MCQ based. He's quite funny and cares for his students. Attendance grade is determined through writing assignments that he randomly gives. If you read and keep up with coursework, you will be fine.
not a super hard class, mostly just memorization. prof is a bit uptight and some test questions are about things not covered in class. had to read the entire textbook and memorize the smallest, irrelevant details to do well (for example, what percentage of people have a certain disorder). also, we had a total of 87 assignments which is insane.
Assigned so many little assignments that did little to help me learn. It was just a bunch of busy work, just like my community college prior to coming here. Exams tested information not found in lectures. I had hoped that this course was taught by an actual clinical psychologist with experience in the field.
I found his classes pointless and if it wasn't for his in class writing assignments I wouldn't go. Nothing he teaches in person is of value, as most of the test is compiled of random stats and obscure questions from the textbook. The writing assignments tend to be pointless, useless, and a waste of time. He merely would just read off the slides.
Incredibly frustrating waste of money, his lectures rarely help you understand further. People stop taking notes after the first few weeks basically. I LOVED the textbook, the material + practice exams on it are incredibly informative. Great course, just take it with someone who will write fair, relevant exams and expand on the material in class.
He is a super nice guy and funny, but the lectures are a copy-and-paste from the textbook, so you don't learn anything by going to class. This is annoying because there are pop-up writing assignments. He is very strict on grading, too, so don't expect any extra credit assignments.
He is a very nice and funny guy which makes his lectures pretty fun and engaging. The only thing I really didn't like is how heavily the course relies on the Macmillan textbook. All homework assignments are through Macmillan, of which there are a lot and most of the questions are very statistic based, which is not reflective of content on exams.
Lectures are pointless if you did the reading (which you should do). A LOT of achieve textbook assignments. They are fast and easy but you should pay attention to the textbook because he pulls test questions from there. Class is a waste but you have to go because of randomized writing assignments in class. Just do the reading and follow the book.
The tests are all based on the random stats in the textbook which are meaningless. He keeps on joking TREMENDOUSLY about how we chose psych because we cannot do math or any science field, which is very cringe. ( I am an international student coming from a public school in Japan so I pretty sure I can do math pretty well compared to him at least ).
Awful teacher. He offers no flexibility or understanding to his students whatsoever. He is very rigid and makes everything harder than it needs to be. an A in his class is a 94, but it is a 93 in all other classes. Offers no make-ups no matter the circumstance. I Learned more from just reading the textbook on my own than I did attending lecture.
Lectures just reiterated what we were assigned to read in the textbook but sometimes he contradicted what the book said which was very frustrating. Tries to be funny and witty but sometimes comes off as inappropriate. Tons of reading (if you actually read the textbook) but exams were not too bad if you do the learning curves. i enjoyed my two courses with dr. von Strunck. he is very funny, compassionate about what he is teaching and psychology and makes lectures really interesting. i loved going to my morning classes as there was always something interesting that he had to tell, always including current events. he also wears nice suits, never seen a professor doing that
He's genuinely one of the best professors I have seen in this field. Very good at passing on his knowledge to us in the best, simplest way possible. Attendance wasn't mandatory, didn't give notes outside of what is in the tb, but his excellent humor made me want to attend class every time. Would take a class with him again if he held more of them
Yeah I wouldn't really recommend. He was funny and the lectures seem to make sense but the tests are randomly very hard. Tons of reading if you want to be fully prepared. NO makeups allowed for tests, homework grades are strict w/ no extension. He gets the job done and the class is doable, but if you have another prof option take them instead.
Amazing Professor!! I just really enjoyed his lectures. Such a funny and caring guy. A bit sarcastic and witty, but makes lectures truly interesting. He definitely knows his stuff and may be too smart for his own good. Tests are challenging but if you study, participate in class, and do your homework you can definitely get a good grade!

I absolutely loved Professor Von Strunck! He is super funny and engaging and he is a really sweet guy. Talking in class is definitely helpful and it's good to make sure he knows who you are. Attendance isn't technically mandatory, but I enjoyed the class I didn't really want to miss it. The class grading is exam-heavy, but if you study you're good!
Von Strunck is the best! He is super funny and engages with the class. His lectures can miss some info for the exams, so make sure you read the textbook. Lots of easy assignments to boost your grade and all MCQ exams. Make sure to attend because he gives surprise in-class assignments. This was a super easy and enjoyable class! :)

Only four exams throughout the semester. 100+ questions in 50-60 minutes.. The only way to get a grade. No graded homework, no group work, no other opportunities to get credit for anything. He does not take attendance and goes through things very quickly, and gives a very quick explanation of topics.
If bad test taker avoid, 5 exams including final and a final project. Took class above this and got an A, the structure of his exams were ridiculous and almost impossible (90 passage q's/100 min) Told students if they had a problem they could review their exams in office hours then sent an email saying "too many student are going to office hours"??
WORST CLASS EVER. Doesn't teach anything and reads off slides that are terribly made. For one of the units he used AI to make the slides.... LOTS of reading to do. 90% of the questions on the exam make no sense and are worded in the most diabolical way. Grade is HEAVILY based on the exams and no extra credit. Does not care about the students.
AMAZING prof!!! yu can tell he loves teaching. he is very energetic and makes a lot of jokes in class. im a bit surprised by the negative feedback prof Van struck is getting, as i truly find him to be an amazing teacher. you learn a lot. sure, the tests can be challenging but study, come to class, and pay attention you and you will do well
This class was truly fun. He knows what he is talking about and makes classes really, really funny. I loved going to class as you always have a few laughters here and there, which makes the class much more enjoably. If you want to learn something, take this professor, you will love him.
I'm really confused by all the people saying this class was difficult? It was extremely easy. The exams were a breeze, all I did for most of them was read the textbook chapters. There is also a group project at the end of the year (worth 20% of your grade) that he grades EXTREMELY EASILY. My group got a 100. He is also very funny and knowledgable.
von Strunck is funny, but very disorganized. He relies heavily on old slides and notes that he doesn't fully understand. He goes off-topic, and exams can be unclear. The textbook ends up being the main guide. He can be hard to approach, and had many issues with my accommodations. This class is graded by only five exams and a group-graded project.
i'm surprised by the man negative comments. dr Von struck is one of the best professors i've ever had. he is very intelligent, funny, cares for students, and gives more of his private time to students like i have evern seen any professor at a different school do. i strongly recommend taking his classes if you want to learn something. hes awesome!
Loved this class. He's a funny guy, but the material covered in this course is a ton! The class attendance was very low, and no one really participated. Felt bad for him as he tried his best, but could not do more then basically read of the slides. Most passive class I ever encountered. You can learn tons, if you do the work and attend classes.
I stopped reading the textbook halfway through and I still did great on tests/final. Easy class if you're willing to take your own practice tests. Group project was graded easily. I would attend class, you're gonna end up doing less work if you do. He has a very specific way of writing tests that make it easy to detect the right answers.
Finished the final today! Amazing class, and such a great professor. Goes above and beyond to help students. I found him to be available outside of class, and his jokes are great, sarcastic, but makes you laugh every lecture you attend. Test are easy, but some questions that are discussed in class, will show up on the test, so you should attend.

Professor Von Strunck pays for reviews on Rate My Prof, all of the reviews are the same but in reality he is a mediocre professor who struggles to convey ideas effectively. He often puts answers on quizzes that contradict the textbook and align with his personal views, making it impossible to study. The hardest Psych 1101 class for sure.
Genuinely one of the worst professors I have had at NU. Very challenging tests that often don't follow the notes presented in class (which by the way were literally a word document that he would just read off of during lectures). Yes he is funny, but funny doesn't make up for bad teaching. Avoid him unless you want to dedicate yourself to his class
As a professor he did make lectures very interesting and tried his very best to be engaging, which had made goiing to class less of a chore. Tests align more with the textbook and often focus on the small details you would least expect. Chapters in the textbook are very long and sometimes feel tedious to read. Exams are your only real grades.
Honestly, he was a fine professor other than his slides and exams. He taught course content very well, however slides weren't organized, and exams often included typos, were wordy, or covered info not found in exams or in the textbook. He's ok professor if you need to take psych foundations, but there are definitely other professors.
He is soooo easy! Yes he goes off-topic in class and makes the same jokes over and over, but his tests are so easy it doesn't even matter. He also gave almost everyone 100% on a group project worth 20% of our grade. He changed the course over the last couple years so only look at the more recent reviews to get a real understanding of the course.

I fought tooth and nail in this class and I'm not dumb. Slides are poorly made. Was a little bit rude in the emails I got from him. Exam questions were crazy specific (random stats or names of people from an event). I didn't even know what to study since his lectures sometimes contradicted the textbook. Refused to round grade.
Save yourself. The moment I was done from the final I saw god and I'm not even religious.
I'm sure he's better in other classes, he's a nice guy I enjoyed his lectures, but this course genuinely gave me gray hairs. It was impossible to get even an A-. I poured hours into this course as I love the topic, but it would've never been enough as his exams were unpredictable--completely new info, subjective answers, or just incorrect answers
Very long and unnecessarily detailed exams with fill-in-the-blank questions that could be random adjectives. His lectures would not tell you much, as he would just read from a long note sheet. Office hours were not very helpful, and he would not allow us to view previous exam performance at all. Your grade won't reflect your level of understanding.
He is quite boring when lecturing, and often just reads off the powerpoint. There are 5 exams in total, 4 midterms and one final. Your final grade is purely based on how well you do on all the exams, there are no chances for extra credit. Group project was easy to complete. It is a content heavy course and requires lots of memorization!!
