Difficult to understand, but once understood very funny to have.
I enjoyed his class, easy exams but he's very hard to understand sometimes.

This prof. encourages critical thinking, is definately one of the most approachable and kind professors you'll have at York. Course was not too demanding if you know are a good student.
He is critical of mainstream sociology. Encourages critical thinking and the course material is something that will stay with me for a long time. Take his course but sit at the front because he talks quietly and doesn't know how to work the microphone.
Excellent professor. Engaging and critical. One of the few professors i've had that appear to be interested in their subject material.

the course is not useful for your future life...well, if you need some easy credits..prof is very hard to understand, extremely unorganized.

Great Guy! He actually cares about his students! Always open to everyones opinions! Hard to understand in the beginning but it gets easier. He is a really sweet and humble man! He doesn't think that he is a God just b/c he has Prof in front of his name. Other Profs at York should take a pg from him!
He is very helpful, but some time it is hard to understand him. He have lots of knowledge about History. He is funny. But I think students do not respect him as much as he deserves.
Hira is hard to understand at the beginning but after awhile you get used to it. He makes you think and encourages his students to participate. The course overall is not usefull in life but he makes it interesting.Sometime he tends to speak soft so i recommend sitting at the front.
Singh is a very kind and generous man. He speaks with a soft voice and is successful at making dull subject matter somewhat interesting. however, the course kit is most difficult to read and not so helpful to the course.
A great prof! Even though he only taught for one term i thoroughly enjoyed it! It was so interesting and he's pretty amusing. Even if he's unclear sometimes don't hesitate to ask he's pretty patient!
What a cutie. Engages students in critical thinking and challenges beyond the borders of normal sociological thinking. caring and kind, always has time for his students. One of the best profs in the sociology department hands down! Many of them could take a page from him!
Great teacher! Fun, although sometimes hard to understand, he's just generally a great prof. If you have him, trust me its a good thing.

I love this man!! Second time taking a class w/ him and its as great as ever! He makes the atmosphere fun and enjoyable! His lectures are alwasys interesting, altough albeit, its not always easy to hear him cleasrly. He's very personable, so if you need anything you can always talk to him.
As a recent graduate of York, I can honestly say that Hira was one of my favourite Profs. He is such a kind hearted man. He loves his students, and is always willing to help. He is not a stickler when it comes to you leaving early or coming in late to class (emergencies). Often times, I felt like Hira was one of the students. Excellent!!!
Professor Singh was my favourite professor ever! He made coming to class enjoyable, and made you interested in learning. It was because of his generosity and helpfulness that I was able to go on to become a teacher. He's an angel!
He is a very short, smart, funny and warm person. His lectures are straightforward, clear, easy to understand and so is his take home exams! Love and respect him.
Hira is the greatest prof ever, he makes going to school enjoyable. Course break down is excellent, and his teaching style is awesome.
He is extremely unorganized and always goes off on a tangent. He is nice enough, and the work load is not bad, but he is quite possibly the most infuriating prof i have ever had.
Hira is one of the worst professors I have had at York University! He is impossible to understand and his lectures have no structure. He did not respond to my emails and made me wait in his office for an hour before helping me, even though he told me to come at a specific time! Don't take this course!
He comes late every week, is diorganized, doesn't have assigned tutorial days so u never know when you have to stay...not to mention you can't understand a word that he says. Do yourself a favour and dont take this class.
He is not very punctual, does not remember anything and does not even look at his email. But his lectures are not that bad, yeah he does go off topic but he gets the point across.
At first, he is difficult to understand, but if u attend classes u'll soon begin to understand him. He is a good prof but please don't disrupt him during lecture, he gets annoyed. This is one of the better classes I ever had!
He's adorable... looks like a little raisin, says one of my friends. aha... his accent is someting to get used to, but once u get it, the rest is easy. Got an A in his class.... lectures are crucial... readings NOT so much.
He's soooooo cute. The best part of his lectures is when he insults other students.
A truly nice prof. He knows his stuff and extremely helpful to his students. I would recommend his classes to anyone. He has a great sense of humor too.

this has been by far the worst class i have ever taken in my four years at york. prof is totally unorganized and hard to understand...very repetitive
he is one of the worst profs i have had at york. definitely plays favourites & u never know what he wants...do not take this course, i regretted it big time.
Well....not a bad guy. dont think he's a jerk or anything. however, highly unorganized ....u can tell he comes to York with no organized lecture speeches and just talks jibberish. very boring class, unclear, and quite repetitive. biggest disadvantage: prof's speech is unclear, quite hard to discipher wat he is saying?

one of the best professor I have ever had. Extremely helpful, very nice, hard to understand some times but over all very easy going. Didn't have much readings at all and only had take home exams which were two very short essay's. He allows students to have an input in the course outline and how tutorials should be.

If you take the time to listen to him you can learn a lot. Good prof overall willing to laugh at himself and he breaks huge concepts down in a simplistic way. If you do your work in this class its really no big deal.
it is true that this prof does not always come to class WELL PREPARED but its becuase he does not HAVE TO! he is SO KNOWLEDGEABLE and knows what he is talking about like the back of his HAND. i have never had a prof SO WILLING to help! and he does a great job breaking up COMPLEX concepts into a way students UNDERSTAND AMAZING prof! amazing class!

The TA's were very helpful as they broke down the readings. there are 4 take home exams which can be difficult but easy if you do the readings
You can easily end up with an A or B in this class. I found it very difficult to understand this prof when sitting in the back rows, so I moved right up to the front (which was much better). If you miss a class or two, it's not a big deal. My T.A was very helpful reiterating important parts of the lectures/readings.
I'll admit I had Professor Singh about approximately 3-4 years ago for social stratification. He is an excellent teacher, very soft spoken, so you have to listen. Yes I know that can be overwhelming or a very labrious task for some students. His understanding of Marxian political economy is outstanding. Take this course. Highly recommended.
You will be lucky to get a B in this class...he is a hard marker & the problem is figuring out what he expects. He contradicts himself a lot, so stating exactly what he says won't help--a lot of us belive's that if u do fairy good you get a defult mark of B
DREAM CLASS:Funny, easy marker, loves the students +discussions in lecture, has a big accent which makes it hard 2 understand so SIT AT THE FRONT. If you do he likes it/acknowledges it. He has favourites who are those he sees often in lect + talk to him. He is approachable and cares. Alot. Take 3260 racism + colonialism-very very light workload
Not a good prof at all. His accent is very hard to understand and he talks fast so lectures are pointless. His take home exams are difficult and he is a hard marker. Would not recommend any courses with him.
Hira is a wonderful person, he has so much humanity. He's also very adorable and funny. Those people who did not like his class are the ones who did not do well in it and it's because they were not paying attention.No other professor has been able to fully articulate the subject of inequality like Hira has. YEAH!! Five thumbs up for Hira
Hira Singh is probably one of the cutest old men at york! He is a little hard to understand but you get used to his accent. He is always willing to help his students. 3 take home exams which were pretty easy! He is very funny and friendly which makes going to class enjoyable. Not organized and always 10 minutes late! doesn't use visual aids either!

One of the best classes I had at York. I learned a lot and I enjoyed his lectures. He gave 3 take home exams. The first worth 20%, second and third were worth 30%. The take home exams you answered two questions using your notes from lecture and the Course Kit. The last 20% is participation marks.
Amazing professor, Super cute and funny. Very fair and always willing to help his students, very knowledgeable in wide range of topics pertaining capitalism, marxism , socilogical theories etc. Good reference & contact to have for the future as well

He is one of the best profs at York and the oldest one there. He is there when you need help and is extremely knowledgeable. He is a tough marker but he kind of takes care of your mark if you show him that your participating. He is funny and fun to talk to. The course has 3 take home exams and thats it. He is worth it!
Arguably the worst prof at York U. Honestly, he may have dementia. Lectures were long and consisted mostly of him going off on irrelevant tangents. Extremely thick accent - it's almost impossible to understand what he's saying. Unfortunately, he loves to hear his own voice. If you have the misfortune of being in one of his classes, DROP IT!!!
Worst professor I've ever had at York U. Changed the syllabus multiple times, changed the readings without notice, barely speaks english, doesn't explain anything, just rambles & rants on useless stuff, refused to give any grade feedback and yet slammed the class with a final exam worth over 50%. if i could get my money back I would. waste of time.
Honestly I dont know where to start. He rambles CONSTANTLY - sometimes 30 minutes after class. He admitted to being one of the worst professors at York and even said the students who drop his class are wise. If you have him as a prof, say a prayer because good luck.
HORRIBLE! PLEASE avoid. the guy is literally 80 years old and forgets what hes talking about mid sentence. he'll give u okay on the 1st test + wont give back marks for the other tests. He even admitted to being a garbage prof himself, please avoid avoid avoid!!! He just rants all day about random stuff and changes the outline MANY times! SAVEURSELF

I admire professor Singh teaching methods. I faced difficulty that was not academic related, he showed consideration, and gave me time to makeup assignments. These are the qualities I experienced with few professors at York, they demonstrated meaningful considerations, specifically when they realized you're doing your utmost best.
Please please please do not for everything that is good and pure... if you care in the slightest about your education, do NOTTTTTTT take the course taught by Hira. Can be a cool guy outside of the classroom but as a teacher he genuinely makes it difficult to learn. Between his thick accent and quiet voice and random rambles it becomes impossible
Please remain rational in your choice of this course.
It doesn't fit in with the mainstream of today's society. I don't know why I'm learning it. Make me an "outlier"? It would make learning difficult. And why learn about India? Why not learn about inequality in Canada? I am confused.
He does not grade papers; when given a complaint to the department, he was a very hard and picky marker to give me a bad mark. This was past the course was over, and more than half the class had not received a mark. My final mark was A, but only gave me a B+ even after negotiation and contacting the department.
I swear the good comments from this guy must be coming from a burner. He is senile and can barely collect his thoughts. Also uses no engagement' tools. no visuals, no PowerPoint, just straight words on a screen. Also good luck trying to contact him. Plus just randomly shows up 30 minutes late. Essentially, the worst prof imaginable.
