great teacher...dry humor which is funny =P
easy, laid back, not motivating though
Good teacher. Patient. Understated humor. Likeable.

Overall just a nice person, no reason anyone should say a bad thing about the guy! Very on point in lecture.
Mr. Jackson is a highly respectable and nice man. I found his class pretty easy and I never read the book either. My only caveat is sometimes it gets boring, but suck it up if you want a good grade. If you come to class at least 80% of the time and do HW and his study guides, you should get an A/B.
I tried and I tried and I failed. Those tests are harder then you think and the majority of the class was struggling with their grades. You really have to be one for science to really appreciate this teacher and get through the class. He's nice, odd, but not my first choice for a professor.
His class was not as easy as I thought it would be. He gives reviews before Exams. Grading based on 3 Midterms, 1 Final, Homework/Quizes. Midterm and Final are Multiple choice, short answer, and one essay-like question. Be sure to read as well as go to class. He seems like a nice guy, dry humor
Nice teacher, but hard tests, lots of notes, have to be interested in geology.3 tests, first multiple choice: easy, second part, short answer: hard: Last part, essay: Extremely hard, but if u study extremely hard for the last part, then tests are not bad. Final exam based on everything.
Covers a little bit of astronomy, geology, oceanography, geology. Final not cumulative. You do have to spend time outside of the class studying, but it was worth it. Extra credit opportunities saved my butt after I bombed a test (my fault, didn't study for that one). Really straightforward, fun.
Good.
Geology lab definitely helps make lecture much easier.
Nice guy, really loves geology, maybe a little too much.Exams are difficult.Short answer is easier than his multiple choice. Really have to study your butt off in order to pass.
Hard Exams, not recommended if you can't stand geology, but If u have to take class for General ED, take it, but don't complain, because he grades hard. Extremely educated in Geo but doesn't understands why the kids are dropping out of class in first month.
Can't relate to some of the negative comments made for Geology 300, but I had a great experience with Geology 305. Demanding, works hard to make material understandable, fair. Nice guy.
Mr. Jackson was a pretty good prof. He is very organized & is always willing to help you do your best. Be sure to not miss a lab, and if you miss one of his lectures, be sure to get notes from someone. He gives you a study guide about a week before your exam, so there should be no excuse to bomb a test if you go over it. So take him for GEOL classe
He was willing to help when asked. I recommend you go on his extra credit field trips. If you talk to him he is willing to give you extra help. He likes his job and it shows. Geo is boring but he is the professor to take if have to take it.
COOL DORKY GUY!!
This class was by far the easiest. If you like to write down a lot of notes, he does that. Practically tells you what to study on the exams. EaSY EASY..

He is a very nice guy, i wish I liked science and paid more attention.
very easy class, i was in one of his classes at CRC and i thought it was pretty much a cake walk, i hardly tried and still got a high b.
I had him. I was going thru some things at the time so i was doing poor in his class, he helped me all the ways that he could. grade A teacher. ...i took his lab too, hat was fun
One of the best teachers I have come across. Professor Jackson does an excellent job at teaching the material. But if you are a looking for an easy A, look else where.
VERY NICE TEACHER, VERY HELPFUL AND CLEAR. HIS TEST ARE BASED ON HIS NOTES.
Very nice teacher. Basically, if you go to class you can expect an A. He is very understanding and makes the class interesting.
His is the man your mother would want you to marry. Educated, caring, funny, and looking for everyone's best interest. Be sure to take excellents notes and you will get an A. Good luck and don't worry he is really good.
Best teacher very caring and helpful....his test are all based on his notes and it is fair.....if you do your work you will get an A
DO NOT take earth science lab with him. his office is so messy, he loses papers and wont give you any credit for them. the lecture course is ok, but the lab sux.
Good class and very interesting. Lecture is easy to follow and text book isn't too dry. Four exams w/mult choice, fill in, short answer questions. Extra credit offered by writing a short report on movie or fieldtrip. Review sheets provided before each exam. Easy homework but have to study to do well on exams. Prof. takes time for questions.
VERY UNORGANIZED!!!! UNHELPFUL ... DOESNT SEEM LIKE HE EVEN KNOWS HIS OWN MATERIAL. DOESNT ANSWER YOUR QUESTIONS WHEN ASKED. GOD FORBID IF HE HAS TO GET BACK TO YOU WITH SOMETHING BECAUSE YOU WONT HEAR ABOUT IT EVER AGAIN.
Straightforward, clear about what you had to do in class. Got behind in grading near end of semester, but did actually get all graded assignments back. Provided lecture notes, review sheets for tests, consistently referred to where in textbook material was he was covering. Polite, enthusiastic. Not blowoff class, but not impossibly hard, either.
Easy but very very boring.
Fun guy! Good class. Natural disasters covered in parts of this class; those were the best parts. I think it was helpful to take the lab -- 306 -- with the lecture.
straight foward class, very nice teacher.
ok this is the easiest class ever u can fail the test and the guy is so nice he gives you other options like write a report i honestly think u should take him as a teacher i like his class dont really care for the stuff he teaches but it was easy
He gives a lot of information, but the test are really easy because of his review sheets, which are practicly verbatim test questions. Take notes, b/c you can uses them of quizes. I actually like geol. after this class.
not really interesting class but still easy. you just need to attend class regulary in order to pass the class because he gives quizzes which are easy points. if you fail the tests he'll have two or more option projects you can do to make up your grade.
easy A, just go to class and study for the tests. He gives a lot of extra credit at the end.
Good teacher. Really makes the subject relevant to everyday life, not just teaching to majors.
So easy. Just take all the notes and study them before the test. Only used the book for the maybe 6 easy homework assignments. You just have to answer a few questions, and are so easy. Easiest class but he is really boring.
I really enjoyed this class. Professor Jackson is a wonderful professor and he is extremely knowledgable and helpful. Mastering the material in the textbook is essential for doing well on exams (from my experience).
Lectures are from powerpoint so you just have to copy all the notes. EASY class. Given study guides a week b4 tests, and reviews b4 test. A few hw problems from the textbook. A couple of 2-question quizzez (easy 1-word answer). EASY. He's NICE.
I took Geology 300/301 about a year ago w/ Prof. Jackson. Fun class, but I found those tests to be tough, but I ended up getting a B in the lecture. I struggled a lot in the lab, but the lab class is helpful.
This class was very easy..He gives these 2 extra credit assignments during the last few weeks of class that can get everyone at least 2 letter grades up. I went from a D to a B..haha that baller status
Subject was pretty interesting (Oceanography). However, this was an online class, and the lack of communication, and not posting grades in a timely fashion made being in this class frustrating at times. Prof. Jackson is a great teacher in a live classroom enviroment, but I do not think teaching online classes is his strength.
The subject was cool, the teacher never posted grades and never replied if you emailed him. I dont think he should be able to teach online. It was an online class and only had 3 onsite meetings.
pretty good teacher. its a little adorable when he says that hes like a major nerd. The class is kind of boring but when he makes a joke once in a blue moon its pretty funny. you need the book to do home work. Dont really have to attend class if you know the material. the first day is very easy, the first exam is very easy, but after that things g
Lots of work! However, he grades fair and is a very nice and patient person. I always look forward to taking a class with him.
I took 305/306 same semester and loved it. Lectures can be boring but the subjects are interesting if you give it a chance. He's actually a very funny guy once he gets comfortable with the group. Go on the field trips for extra credit because it's 1:1 time and you learn a ton more. Only 3 of us went on ours but it was ok. STUDY and take good notes!
His lecs are boring & he doesn't test you on what was talked about in his lec. You might as well read the book at home & show up for tests. There is hw often but he is helpful when it comes to that. He's nice, but plan on learning on your own. He never gives back hw and grades tests in class, not paying much attn to short answer questions.
professor Jackson is a great teacher, everything is very through and he gives little homework that is relevant to tests. as long as you show up pay attention and take notes it's a guaranteed "A"
Excellent teacher! Gives references, examples, and stories in his lectures. He definitely makes it enjoyable, as if science wasn't its own reward anyway!! Four stars to Professor Jackson!
lectures are extremely boring and slow. tests have nothing to do with lecture, read the book and teach yourself.
Complete BORE!!!! lectures are slow and fall asleep material... tests are somewhat of a breeze...
Straightforward. Lectures and book complement each other well.
This class was sooooo boring, but super easy. The lab was even easier, and not as boring.
Straightforward class. Doesnt overload you with work, gives alot of notes. Field trip and presentations for labs. Hes willing to help if u just ask!He doesnt take roll, but gives mini quizzes almost every other day. I enjoyed the class.
He's not exactly the most entertaining or lively teacher but his class is rather doable. If you take a televised class be sure to go to the overflow room where there's no instructor, it definitely makes the class that much more interesting!
Not the most interesting material, but Prof Jackson tries to liven it up as best he can. Lecture can be a little dry, but take the lab and it is a lot of fun and helps the lecture course. Several tests, fairly easy if you pay attention and do the required reading.
Laid back. He's forgiving and patient. However, he doesn't get back to emails and it pretty disorganized. l had a televised course, so the work was pretty easy. However, the study guide didn't really help on the final. So, study everything. He will test on minderal composition and rocks etc.
Easy. Lectures are clear if he really didn't forget to talk about it. He's too laid. Don't know what happened but he's very behind schedule. Attend the lectures would help a lot for the tests. NO notes, only your memory. He grades only a few labs, those others just marked done and you have 100%. But it's a problem when the final comes.
Tests are really hard and the study guides he gives us are nothing like the tests so be prepare to read read read..if u really wanna pass DO the extra credits and all the homework and be there for the quizes.
Mr Jackson was an alright teacher. He made us watch a show everyday of class and we did and assignment on it during the video. He really dosnt teach anything. And the tests are on the videos/chapter from book. The class is fairly easy, just read the chapters and watch the videos and you should pass.
He assigns so much busy work and random class quizzes. I wasn't there most the time for class which is the only reason why I didn't get an A. His tests are fairly easy as long as you study. There were 3 tests and a final. It just sucks he assign much useless classwork and information is really dry and boring.
Mr. Jackson works from the book. The study guides weren't as helpful baecuse most of the info on test was totally different. READ READ READ!!! Test is on text book and most of the notes. Show up to class for notes/random quizes, do extra credit, assignments, and STUDY FOR EXAMS...and you'll get an A. Do about an hour worth of homework each week.
The lectures are very hard to stay awake in. He's a pretty easy teacher. No essay except for extra credit. The exams are based on the book and a little bit of his lecture. Study guide is a little helpful. 15% of the study guide was on the exam so i suggest reading the book. It's not a hard class, just random easy quizes, in book hw and exams.
He's pretty good in teaching and delivering stuff to students. Over, the class was good. Keep up with your stuff and homework. Exams are easy as long as you do the study guides. He has good sense of humor as well, cracks jokes once in a while. I would recommend him.
Straight forward. Some materials is really engaging.
Pretty mundane class routine. sit down, watch a movie, occasionaly do homework. Lecture part of class was really boring as he spoke in monotone. Tests are based mostly on terminology and are pretty frequent. Not a bad class.
Good class, good info, straitghtforward.
Pretty boring lecture. Study guides have NOTHING to do with the tests. 3 tests and a final. Doesn't reply to e-mails. Doesn't even grade things on a timely fashion. ALWAYS 10 minutes late to class. Not prepared. 2 extra credit assignments. I don't recommend taking him if you don't have to.
Ridiculously boring lecture- very difficult to stay awake. Study guides are only helpful for about 3 questions on each test. Study the book if you want to do well on tests. Offers quite a bit of extra credit. Get the 2nd edition of the textbook (Earth System History) to save some money.
Hardly anything is explained. Labs are very unclear, and lab final is even worse.
This was a way of looking at geology that was different and interesting. I liked it a lot.
He's good at giving grade reports out, probably the only professor I've had this semester that did that. (Which I like!) Very helpful, full of informative lectures. Do your homework, study hard and you'll pass.
Thoroughly enjoyed this class. GEO 311 labs were ambiguous, but turns out there is no single answer for geologic map interpretations. Was impressed that he addresses two sides of an argument and is open to differing opinions.
This was a good class.
This was a good class. I liked it more than I thought I would.
Good class. I liked it more than I thought I would.
Lecture is boring and he can't answer complicated questions. Appears to favor male students and grades arbitrarially.Very disorganized. Is usually late to lecture by at least 10 minutes. Inconsistant grading and standards. Tests are difficult, read chapters if you want a good grade. Double check test answers, he's not accurate.
He kept the class interesting, test material was straightforward. Important to show up for class for quizzes that can't be made up. Quizzes were easy, though.
This isn't the most exciting class, but it's not hard if you take notes. His study guides are helpful, and if you go to class you have a general idea of things.
He's not the most exciting man, but his Geology 300 class is cake and he's a good professor. Show every day, listen, take a few notes and you WILL pass. He plays videos occasionally which is nice as well as offers 2 field trips and extra credit opportunities. Overall, I'm very satisfied with him
He's easy if you listen and show up. His tests are straight forward. The only problem I had was that he sucks at grading things on time. Also had him for lab, and again they are easy you just need to pay attention.:)
He's very boring and unorganized, but if you keep up with your readings and take notes you'll easily pass. Use the study guides and make friends! He's not very helpful. Make sure to remind him to submit your scores because he will forget! I would recommend not doing his extra credit unless you're willing to write a 10 page research paper.
Worst professor ever! Every unorganized. His extra credit opportunity project is a joke. The extra credit isn't actually extra credit because you have to do an essay and it doesn't guarantee that it will replace a test. For some reason he doesn't make you feel welcome when you go to his office hours. During his lectures he's all over the place.
Unorganized, takes forever to grade - he uses a TA that grades differently from him, extra credit is a joke 2000 word essay, and a 10 pt. bookreport 1500 words, field trip was 8 hours of wasted gas & time, not alot of homework a few ch. review but Lots of reading when the test are extremely difficult. BEWARE YOU WILL FAIL GEOL avoid at all cost.
He assigns ALL the labs they are HARD and you don't get any help, you must be a GEOL major to understand, the final is an accumulation of all labs when you worked in groups all semester, grading is tough and the extra credit is a 8 hour field trip thats uninteresting, waste of gas and he will drop a low lab grade . BEWARE, AVOID TAKE SOMEONE ELSE!!
Professors use a syllabus to ensure the students know what is going on thru the whole semester and to have expectations of their performance. The syllabus for this class was a piece of paper with words on it. That description was more useful than the syllabus. A lot of students rent their lab book, which means copies have to be made, if you knew.
Mud. That is the clarity level of his explanations when you have questions. The lab is hands on, for you, not him. He'll say what pages he'd like done. Oh, where you waiting for something more? So were we. His expectations are that you should know Geology when you walk into the, wait for it, GEOLOGY Class! To learn GEOLOGY! Defense rests your honor.
He is the most boring person I have ever met and this is the only class I have fallen asleep in. He is unclear, disorganized, late to all classes, unhelpful, and creates aggressively boring lectures. If you can stay awake, the class is easy and tests offer lots of extra credit, just take notes and caffeine.
He is an extremely boring teacher. His lectures are thorough but only if you can stay awake during them. Usually opens the class 1 minute before it starts; then he leaves to grab papers for 5 minutes while class has technically already started.
How do you show up 20 minutes before the final to log in to your computer and then you're 15 minutes late? By the way you're the professor AND it's finals! But it's just like every other day you're taking this class. He is: late, disorganized, unaware. Funerals are more exciting. I wish I could go back in time to not take this class. Ever.
Does having tenure mean you can be disorganized and chronically tardy? Well this is the professor for you. When your tardiness is added up to a weeks worth of classes, could your grade have been better? Good job CRC for keeping this guy on your staff. He might be a slightly decent Geologist, but he has no business teaching it.
One of the hardest and boring class that I have ever taken. All his test were difficult, even though i would study for hours and complete the study guides that were given. the only reason i received a B was because i did both of the extra credits, which were two papers that have to be about 6-7 pages.
Good course. Made things relevant. Straightforward tests if you follow the lectures.
I did well on the first test, not so hot on the second test. He noticed a drop in my grade and checked in with me. It was mostly that personal life got in the way of studying, but he made sure I was re-focused. I appreciated that.
I would avoid this lab. Take another teachers if you can He never really taught much, wasn't clear & his final almost all the class failed which is 20% of grade He didn't really teach how to pass the final. You will do a lab assignment each week that you will have to figure out on your own. I had an A in the class took final got a C.
I still haven't received assignments and tests back. His lectures are boring. I learned more from the study guide then his lecture. Only 1/3 off the study guide is on the test
If you're not interested in geology but is stuck with class, consider taking the online course. Jackson's lectures are boring and hard to sit through. HW is easy and straightforward, but the exams will be hard, and you'll most likely fail them if you don't take time to study. I wish I took the online course or taken a different class altogether.
It's a fairly easy class if you read the textbook AND go to class. Without doing BOTH you wont pass with anything higher than a C. 4 exams (final is not accumulative). The 1 exam is SUPER easy, but don't let it fool you. The 2nd and 3rd are pretty difficult. Study your lecture notes more than the study guide. YOU HAVE TO TAKE THE LAB (it's easy)
Jackson was a very hard teacher to take. He was enthusiastic about his subject but not in a way that made sense to non-science loving people. I was recommend to take him by multiple friends but the recommendation fell short of the true personality I experienced. If you're okay learning for from the book than in class take Jackson.
He never gave us our tests back. We didn't know what grade we had in the class. He didn't post it online either. And he is a tough grader on the homework.
The class structure is orchestrated in a way that he understands but will be hard to grasp on a universal level - unless you are gifted with memory and natural talent for science, you will struggle & ultimately fail. Advice, if you MUST take his class, study in well in advance, notes aren't really helpful unless you can memorize his entire lecture.
Mr. Jackson is a good professor because he enjoys what he teaches and he always tries to explain things in a way you can understand. However, it is crucial for you to keep up with the readings and study his study guides in advanced. If you aren't a geology type you will find new terms sometimes hard to remember so you must study! DO EXTRA CREDIT!
Straight forward, nice guy, really helps if you go talk to him when you don't understand something
Probably one of the worst teachers I have ever had.. Who can learn from his dry lectures?! He does not know answers to questions, shows up late to class, and if students are 45+ minutes late to class he still lets them sign in! NOT FAIR! He is always behind, rambles on, and quite frankly so old school and needs to realize that times have changed!
He is making this class much harder than other teachers. Tests are worth 50% and on the written answer parts I found that he graded harshly for no reason (you'll see). Tests are worth 50% and you have two extra credit papers (8 page and 6 page) that aren't really worth it. He doesn't update grades ever.
I had him for Oceanography. A very easy class. Show up and study a little bit and you'll pass. Never any homework and the test review sheets are all you'll need to pass the class. Easy to get into contact with outside of class. I experienced a death in my fiance's family during the semester and Prof. Jackson made sure I was handling the loss well.
It was a really interesting class. It helped to take the lab. He specifically flagged a lot of material that would be asked on the exams.
Solid physical science class. I liked how it integrated a lot of other sciences. Course was made relevant to where we live and current events. Engaging material.
Dont take thus class. He takes role. His lectures are beyond boring. He unorganized, he has slides on canvas but never goes in the order of the slides. His lectures make no sense. Theres hw but its not much or very hard. He has study guides but they are trash. There is a lot of information on the study guide but the test is never like it.
He was a very nice and humble professor. Since I had a different lecture professor, it was very hard for me to finish his labs but he and his TA were extremely helpful and went out of their way to help me with the labs. He even posted his old recorded videos pertaining to the unit. A solid choice.
He was a great professor and gave out clear study guides to use for the test. If you do the homework, reading, and study guide it will be a really easy class!
His lectures are that of a mono toned regurgitation of the words from the book. This makes it hard to understand as everything is a jargon. During the tough translation to online, he did not switch smoothly as everything became unrealistically hard. He does not answer emails nor acknowledges our concerns. He is a late grader. Take Chem instead.
This class wasn't as bad as people make it seem, especially online for a summer session. He switched up homework from questions he made himself to watching/answering videos that were actually interesting! He grades a little late but very understanding/caring if you need help with anything.
Okay professor. Grades late and responds to emails late. Lectures were pretty dull. Uploaded recorded lectures and powerpoints onto canvas. Had a lot of study guides and reviews for exams, but lecture notes were probably more helpful for studying. Exams were difficult, but he doesn't grade harshly. You have to purchase the course textbook.
I took his online class for the summer. Pretty okay teacher, a little mundane. Used the textbook consistently every class. If you dont have the textbook, good luck. Use of power points are heavy, but he posts these. Tests will be fine is you study with seriousness. friendly and accommodating to those who text/email.
Not a fun class to take if you have an interest in geology, if you're just filling a requirement DO NOT take it. There's heavy lecture twice a week that aren't too helpful and not engaging, the tests are heavy and mainly focused on the textbook. He also has a habit of dropping major tests in the middle of the week without notice. Check canvas daily
Ended up having to do pass/no pass. He doesn't take attendance but if you don't show up, good luck with the labs. Labs were incredibly hard and I couldn't understand anything. Though to be fair, my GEOL prof was different and I took him for lab so I suggest if you take him for lab, take him for lecture. A bit nitpicky when grading.
Prof. Jackson was a pretty good teacher for online GEOl. While he gives lectures for every class day, its pretty simple and the class is way easier if you read the textbook. He does not give too much homework, just complete it on time and you should be good.
I really like this teacher:) He really does care to help. If you have questions and need help, he will be very understanding. I truly miss him and if you speak to him during office hours he will be more likely to help you no matter the time. I got help from him one day at 8pm and I truly felt he cared. However, the class is pretty difficult.
I had this professor for the online class and online lab. It turns out he wasn't actually grading my work but instead had someone else doing it. The whole time he was giving feedback but he wasn't aware. I had to approach the chair of sciences to get him to finally grade a paper. Hardly any feedback on assignments, and when you do it's his way.
Very monotone. Gives homework based on videos that you have to watch that do not help you with the course. His labs are a bunch of work and often ahead of the lecture, so you don't really understand what the lab is about. I have a higher grade in my Differential Equations class, which says a lot. If you're looking for an easy class, don't take it.
Prof had MANY lectures. Very monotone. I couldnt sit through lectures, I had to speed up lectures and it was still boring. He did teach the right material for the class but it was very boring for me. I feel like he should teach at a high school because he assigns textbook readings and video readings like high school teachers. He's nice though.
Did well, still frustrated. One lab he showed up and told us nothing was prepared. People drove in for that class. Just told to go home. He graded late, and with no feedback. If it was turned in online, I was never told what answers were wrong. If it was graded and returned just red marks with no why. Exams took weeks to come back. Was frustrating.
This professor was not good he never explained well how to the assignments and if you did something wrong he never wrote what you did wrong. The TA was more helpful she would answer my questions. He rarely answers emails. I would not take his class.
If taking for a science GE you could probably find something else easier. So much lecture and reading if you were to actually go over it all. Assignment wise this class is very light barely any work one short assignment a week. Assignments fairly difficult though grades every question. Invest in other third party sights to help answer assignments.
not organized, he is a lazy grader and his exam review are opposite of exams.
The lectures are pretty dull, but the professor uploads recordings and slides to Canvas. Exams are tough but graded leniently. Unstuckstudy was a lifesaver for me - it helped a lot with those tricky test questions.
Not a very active professor. Maybe he isn't used to leading fully online classes. Lectures are uploaded. Chapter readings are required. Almost all assignments are based on the readings you do. Answer a couple questions and upload a doc. Three big exams and a final. I wouldn't take this course again only because he is difficult to get a hold of.
Easy if you come to class, take good notes, and study the guides he provides for you before each exam. Good Lectures, not much HW, easy pop quizzes that are open note, attendance counts towards overall grade, very friendly and easy to communicate with, labs are fun with lots of hands on learning, and I would take his classes again if needed.
His lectures were clear and provided everything he wanted us to know for the exams.
I you like to use textbooks to help you, DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS. He likes to use hour long lectures for questions and expect you to understand every question.
As long as you write good notes and use the study guides he provides for each exam you'll be fine. His lectures are boring though so be prepared, but he doesn't mind if you aren't really paying attention. He does take a while to grade and sometimes it doesn't make sense. Overall, he's an okay professor.
