This teacher is extremely helpful and makes algebra very easy for you.
This guy does not seem to know what his is trying to convey to students. I like math but taking his class I could not understand what he was trying to get at, always getting lost, or messing up extremely bad.
He just did examples from the book and sometimes it was verbatim. I would not recommend this teacher to anyone.
A very confusing teacher. He would get so caught up in writing equations on the board that he wouldn't notice when he made a mistake, and when he was finally done, everyone had no idea what he was trying to convey to the class.
Extremly confusing teacher. Not a clear thinker. Does more talking about nonsense then math so he only gets thru two or three examples per class. Which are in the book anyway. Don't waste your money on him he can't teach.
very boring, uses a very monotone voice, makes it hard to stay awake, does not explain the material well, unless you aced algebra and just took it before his class you will be way behind w/ no chance of catching up
This teacher is extremely confusing.I highly recommend buying the book with the Student Study back with Dics, because that will help more with understand then the with the teacher. The only reason I even go to the class is for attendance. I learn everything else from the book and the study guide.
i used to like math until i took his class. He made me feel pretty stupid. Very unclear. if you want to get a bad grade, take his class. He sucks!!!!
He spends way too much time writing long equations that are irrelevent. He needs to get straight to the point. I do the homework in class instead of listenting to him. The book and study guide are more helpful than he is.
DONT TAKE HIM
IF YOU NEED TO TAKE THIS CLASS, PUT UP WITH THE TEACHER. BRING LOTS OF COFFEE. TAKE THE NOTES, READ ALL THE EXAMPLES IN THE BOOK, DO THE ASSIGNMENTS, BUT READ EVERYTHING ON YOUR OWN TO UNDERSTAND IT. HE HAS ALOT OF MATH HISTORY KNOWLEDGE, GOOD FOR HIM!
Short but difficult exams. Takes his time on easy stuff and skims through the hard stuff.
Confuuuuusing! I agree with most of the comments given... he talks a mile a minute, writing very little of what you need to know on the board. I really wish I could've gotten out of his class, but I needed precalc. :(
that is precalc. algebra. his way of teaching is doing the examples from the book, not helpful. one of the worst teachers i've ever had. i changed my major from mathematics education to hospitality management because i didn't want to take that class again with him and math is too hard.
This is the 2nd math course I take with him. I don't consider him the worst teacher ever! Math is not easy for everybody; some people have to practice more than others. I agree that he is somewhat confusing sometimes. I've passed both classes with an A, so he is not an impossible instructor!
I took algebra the previous semester and passed with an A and I find him difficult and confusing. I believe in working hard to achieve a good grade but regardless of how much effort is given this class is impossible.
I really liked Mr. Malaret. If I got confused, his door was always open to me. With his help and some hard work on my part I scored A's in both his classes.
he is ok.tests are easy.
i get sleepy in his class and he keeps goin over and over the same stuff, it gets really boring and his jokes wow awful :S
Hes a Very understanding Teaher, He gives a chance to get some extra credit, HE IS ALWAYS WILLING TO HELP!!. HE is a good teacher
His class is very boring, doesn't explain things clearly, test don't reflect what was covered in class. Gives extra credit but it's only equalivalent to about 3pts and it's alot of work just for 3 pts. Only gives books examples and not very helpful, better off teaching yourself.
Teaches straight from the book and doesn't know the concepts of anything. He tries, but still falls short. If you take his class, I recommend you re-teach the concepts to yourself to be able to get a good grade. Not a real hard class, but if your not good at math, don't take him.
I don't think he's a bad teacher but I found the class a little hard but that's just cause I hate math. He's a good guy and is always willing to help you, but he talks a little fast. The tests are harder and has a crazy amount of information to try and remember. The extra credit doesn't count for much but every little bit helps!
He was a mostly boring professor, and I did almost all of my homework in class. He tried to be a good teacher, but he tended to make things more complicated than needed, which confused many students. There are a lot of chances to make of for bad exam grades and to add extra credit. I would recommend only if you are good at math.
He is a very nice person but he tends to go more into concepts than test material. I failed college algebra the semester before and I felt like I had never been in that math class. If you read though the book and understand all the homework, you'll do well.
I am not a "math person" I found that I could follow his concepts in class, but he seemed to go so fast, he wld ask if u had questns but sometimes its hrd to verbalize your question while digesting a concept. He is eager to help though.
Very helpful to students needs. Tests are straightforward, no trick questions. Does go into a lot of detail; too much perhaps. Very lenient when grading tests; will give partial credit even if result is not right.
my shadow can teach better than him
Nice guy, good teacher. Very helpful, but it IS math, so you do have to be dedicated. Get a tutor from the beginning and apply yourself. Do the h.w.!
HE sure as heck knows math. Now, that whole part about getting YOU to know the math, that's a different story. He talks to the board a lot, his handwriting is simply atrocious, to the point where you're so confused on what he's doing because that 7 that HE was working with, you actually thought to be an F. Dont take unless you do very well in math.
He is aweful, he is by far the worst teacher that ive ever had at SCC. His writing is very unclear on the board and he talks and writes on the board very quickly. I have no doubt in my mind that he knows the material, but there is a difference in know it and knowing how to teach that material. So needless to say I actually withdrew from his class!
The worst professor i have ever had. Not just in math, the worst period. There's nothing more to it than that, he just flat out sucks. I don't know what posessed this man to become a teacher. Malaret is an idiot.
He told the class the first day we were all going to fail and we all did. Avoid him!!!!He doesn't help any one at all. He's useless, you can't ubderstand him.
He is a little all over the place. Its a math class, so you are definately going to need the txtbk. Ask lots of questions. Dont let him move on unless you really understand the material. Read the chapters, do the homework, ask lots of questions, study hard, thats the key really to walking out with an A
terrible math teacher. Did not like questions. Treated questions as a bother. Never taught to the homework. He gave no credit for homework. Gave extra worksheets that looked totally different from the book or anything in class. Talked way over the heads of typical college algebra students/ added chemistry, science, inconsequential material.
Go to the class and do the homework, because it will help you on the tests. He's not a great teacher, but if you put in the time to read the book and do the problems you'll do fine in the class.
Yeah, don't listen to those people because this teacher is really awesome. He is always willing to help his students. Even though the semester is over he will still try to help u, but u must do ur HW b/c this subject is not easy. Also, if u need help just stop by his office.
DO NOT TAKE HIM. T-SHIRT AND HAT. AGAIN DO NOT TAKE HIM. YOU BEEN WARNED!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
HE TALKS TO THE BOARD AND TEACHES MORE THAN WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW AND THAT CONFUSES YOU. KNOW HE IS A GREAT PERSON AND IT'S ALWAYS AVALIABLE FOR YOU. IF YOU READ THE BOOK BEFORE CLASS AND DO ALL HOMEWORK YOU'LL BE FINE.
I did not have a good experience with his class at all!! He doesn't offer any help and you can't even understand his handwritting. The only thing he covers in class are the examples that are already examples displayed in the BOOK!!
I took this class even though I placed higher than College Algebra. If you are someone that loves math and numbers, I do, I know Im weird, he does too and he will truly relate to you, he is helpful and he will be there to help you through every step, he will answer questions and the tests are right outta the notes. TAKE HIM!!! A++++++++++++++++++++
interesting, what can i say if you are bad at math run for the hills his writing is unclear he definitley talks to the board ALOT hes a cool teacher if you need help just ask him i like math and he does do alot of explaining before you even know how 3to do the chapter just a word of cautious before talking his class BE PREPARED !!!!!!!
he is a bit confusing, but if you go to him after class, or whenver you have time he will teach you how to do the equations. He is extremely helpful if you are willing to spend extra time with him. I would take him again.
Ignore the negetive comments below; presumably they never did the homework. Aside from being a nice man, Malaret is a great teacher. His tests reflect homework, almost exactly. The guy taught at M.I.T and can explain the info with great clarity.
Mr Malaret is a great and helpful teacher BUT he is very very hard. He will give you a chance to boost your grade with some extra points but you have to work for it. do your homework and ask questions early. he really cares but the tests are difficult
Awful teacher!! DO NOT TAKE him!. I am good at math but he does not explain material clearly. I failed all but one test before I withdrew from the class. I took another teacher (mrs. holtegrefe) and i have an A in the class. DO NOT TAKE HIM!!
Where to start? DO NOT TAKE THIS TEACHER. WORST MATH TEACHER EVER. Do not listen to others saying hes ok or good, you will so regret it. Take my word for it and DO NOT TAKE HIM!!!!
This guy knows math + he teaches it verywell, he starts straight out of the book then elaborates based on class questions, very helpful, but expects college level participation. uses Full class periods. Homework is not mandatory, midchapters/chapter exams count for xtra credit, encourages the use of calculator. He is very sweet but kinda out there
SUPER SUPER HARD CLASS. seriously, he dosnt teach, but he is really nice and kinda strange but nice. If you do all your homework, and live at the tutoring center you will pass. He has alot of exams. No graded hw, no graded quizzes and the last test is a day before the final. Its exhasting. I wish i could drop, but i need to leave scc!! :-(
He is an excelent professor. He expects you to work at a college level. You are in college, right? He lives math, and sometimes talks over students heads, but he is trying to help you see the applications of what you are studying. He is very, very helpful and takes extra time outside of of class anytime he is able.
Okay so this guy is very nice and he DOESN'T make you feel like an idiot when you ask questions. He doesn't check the homework but he does give pop quizzes on it. If your GOOD at math you'll do fine. But if you suck at math DO NOT take this class he teaches way to fast and can be hard to understand. But hey hes a real nice guy.
Very hard class and it is all self taught. The prof. is extremely helpful and is always willing to help. Very nice guy but be prepared to teach Cal 1 to yourself
Great prof. loves math and will bend over backwards to help you get the grade you work for . yes you have to work in his class but you come out knowing the material. if you will be taking the calc cycle (Calc 1,2,3 diff EQ) starting with precalc take him and do the work. you will thank him later!
Easy A! Great guy. Not too bad on the eyes either!!
Mr. Malaret is very personable and accommodating. He tries to go out of his way to be helpful and his enthusiasm for math shows. Content may be hard to understand, but it's due to the subject matter, not the teacher. You will need to work hard in Calc. regardless of which professor you take. Tests can be challenging but he's a generous grader.
Horrible Experience. This teacher knows both english and spanish, and so do I, but I couldn't understand him whatsoever. His constantly talking and thinks his funny. Can't comprehend his writing on the board. My attention span drops to 0 when I get there. I hated this class. The work is easy but I never learned anything and failed.
HORRIBLE EXPERIENCE. If you already know EVERYTHING about college algebra, you will be fine. If you want to learn, DO NOT TAKE HIS CLASS, he will make you feel stupid for asking questions, and expects you to know everything! Trying to follow his lessons are impossible, you can't read his writing on the board!! HORRIBLE!! DON'T TAKE HIM!!
Terrible teacher. Doesn't care about the students. Will ask if anyone has questions about the homework, will answer maybe two questions and then say no more time we have to get working. I self taught myself. He is terrible. Try to avoid at all costs.
The class is hard.... But the prof. is WORSE!!! He is hard to understand and its even harder to read his writing! If you want to pass the class, you must teach yourself Calc. if you want to pass the test! AVOID THIS CLASS... NO This TEACHER!
Professor Malaret was an enjoyable teacher. You can tell he is extremely knowledgeable in his field. If you do all the work and ask questions, you should have no problem understanding the material and doing well on the tests. He doesn't make it easy for you, but help is there if you take the time to seek it. I would take this professor again.
It's very clear that he knows math extremely well but i don't think he knows how to teach it as well as he knows it. His class isn't an easy A and you're probably going to need alot of help from the academic success center. i probably wouldn't take him again but he's not the worst teacher at SSC.He also makes alot of dry humor & mentions HW quizzes
This professor is extremly smart and does know his math... But he does not know how to teach.. He is very unclear and does not like to re-explain if you have qeustions or confused.. If you select this teacher be prepared to teach yourself through the book because his notes arent useful either.
Professor Malaret knows a lot about math but cannot teach to save his life. If you take College Algebra with him, you will NEED to teach yourself from the book. One on one during his office hours he is very helpful and will answer any questions, but during class dont ask questions otherwise he will make you feel like an idiot.
Tests are extremely easy. Just look at the example problems in the book and you will be just fine. Most of the problems on the test are the same thing with just different numbers.
THE WORST TEACHER EVER!! Stay away if you want to pass this class he does NOT know how to teach its like he was teaching to the bored. At the end of the semester half the class dropped out including my self. i did all my homework and did good on it but then when it come to tests there would be nothing from the homework or what he would do in class
Prof Malaret is a very caring teacher that wants to see you succeed. That being said, it is very easy to tank one of his classes. He is not the clearest of teachers. I put forth 25 hours a week minimum doing homework and still ended up with a B at the end of the semester. Grading is on the harder end compared with other math faculty. Caution.
He honestly is a genius, but he is kind of a jerk. He tells you in class to ask for help when you don't under stand something but then she you do ask for help he makes you feel like an idiot. 50% of the grade is test and if you tank two your done. Home work is online. This is an impossible class if you are not good at math. DON'T TAKE HIM!!!!!!!!
THE Worst MATH Professor in Seminole he teaches fast and what ever he teaches in class or what ever you do for Home Work none of it will be on the test. He doesn't explain or do example in other ways he jus do it in one way and once you get it that's that. He Expects You To Know Everything Went you first start his class
HE KNOWS WHAT HE IS TALKING ABOUT BUT NOBODY ELSE KNOWS. I TOOK HIM BECUASE IT WAS THE LAST MATH TEACHER AVAILABLE EVEN THOUGH I SEEN THE COMMENTS ON HERE THAT WAS A BIG MISTAKE I ENDED UP WITH AN F HW ONLINE DOESNT HELP WITH THE TESTS WHEN YOU ASK FOR HELP HE EXPLAINS IN WAY THAT U END UP BEING MORE LOST THAN BEFORE.ALOT OF PEOPLE FAIL HIS TESTS
Very hard class. He doesn't explain things very clear. He rambles on. Was always late to class and always kept us to the very last minute of class. Not a good teacher. Do not take.
Very sweet man, personally very easy to understand, and the class is all too simple to do well in. Tests are only hard if you refuse to study. Been very understanding in my multiple absences due to medical reasons. More than willing to schedule around appointments and even let me take tests weeks early when I finish the work.
Do not take Malarets class! I spent 20-30 hours a week studying and living at the help center only to find I would get a D on the test. He is a kind person but painfully hard to understand in regards to math. He taught as if u should already have a good grasp on the new material. Lots of HW and a complicated point system. Does NOT drop worst grade.
He was not a good professor
He was nice but his hw is online and hes boring and he goes over stuff really fast
He uses my mathlab (which i guess everyone does which is difficult in & of itself)so the tests don't match the homework & i had to teach myself, which is why i didn't pass. it was extremely difficult to follow him & i DO NOT recommend taking this teacher!!!
He used webassign, which is standard but he turned off all helpers such as videos and tutorials. Made the class EXTREMELY difficult. I had to buy the solutions manuel to attempt to teach myself. Continually messed up on problems he was trying to do on the board and class had to correct him. Diff Eq is a hard class but he made it way harder.
Do not take his class. I am a hardworking student but couldn't manage even a C on any of his tests. He does not answer your questions. He teaches and talks to himself instead of lecturing to the class. Never had such an awful professor.
Worst math professor ever! I went to get tutoring every week, and I am a hardworking student who is usually good at math. He makes you feel like an idiot when you ask questions and went over sections very fast. I also bought a book with a tutoring dvd, so I basically taught myself. I barely got a B thanks to the 30 hours a week I put in.
CLASS MATERIAL IS VERY EASY.Teacher is alright, but very boring. I had a really hard time staying awake during class until I started doing the homework in class. All you need to do to pass the class is do the homework, which like I said, just do it in class. If you know math and are looking for a low maintenance class this is it.
I really liked him. College is not about being hand fed, if you don't study and do the homework, you won't pass. He goes over the material well and all you have to do is do the homework and ask him after class if you have any problems. If you like to be fed stuff, don't take him, But if you're good at keeping up then by all means :).
Hes not weird or anything hes a great teacher. He went to MIT for naval arch thats insane and great for the value at ssc. Hes straight forward with lectures but he does go off on big equation tangents. He has a lot of knowledge about math and physics. Its great to know we have a MIT grad at SSC , that really means something.
Hes a different teacher, one thing that stood out at me was that he went to MIT. Like the other guy said thats pretty cool, a great for our school. In terms of getting a good grade you really got to study hard for calc, and maybe conceptsofcalc. I liked the class still debating weather to retake him for a different class. Loved the class though.
He's a nice guy However, his lectures are boring. Easy to get confused lose track after a while. The homework is extra credit and if you do it on time, you can probably pass the tests. His lectures are read out of the book and he just re-does the worked examples in the book. Maybe it was the length of the class, but I didn't enjoy calc w him
He's a super nice guy and you can tell he wants you to do well in class. However, he makes up examples to show the class and he'll get halfway through and realize that example won't work. Very confusing. His handwriting is horrible so it's a PAIN to take notes. He doesn't do traditional powerpoints or notes, so it's a kind of teach yourself class.
He definitely knows what he's talking about but he's not a very good teacher. There are 4 tests with a homework assignment for every single section on the test.
He counts homework as a grade as long as you do it before the end of the course, however if you do it before the test it's extra points on your test. Lectures can get a little boring but it's math, what did you expect? Staying on top of your homework helps 110%
He's a horrible teacher, I wasn't even in his class more than two weeks before I had to start teaching myself. He knows his math, but will often make mistakes on the board and he rambles about stuff that doesn't even apply to the class. He id not a good teacher, and he goes through each section so fast that I couldn't follow him.
Basically, Malaret is an incredibly smart man who can't teach math. Like others said: his handwriting is hard to read, he lectures out of the book, and it is ABSOLUTELY REQUIRED that you teach yourself the material. I am a math ed major and I've never seen a math class taught this way. Must teach yourself everything or you will fail.
100% self taught class. Couldn't follow the lectures or even take notes. He is incredibly brilliant but has no clue how to teach what he knows. Most students just sit through the painful "lecture" doing homework for various classes. Some even read books or play games. I'm told DE isn't really that bad, ABC's are pretty tough with a bad teacher.
I don't get the criticism. I took Calc. I with Malaret as a non-math major and had little difficulty benefitting from his instruction. Content is challenging, but tests were very fair and linked to HW + lectures. He went above and beyond with being available for help. I attribute much of my continued success in math to having Calc I with him.
Not very clear while teaching. He solved the problems by himself or in his head before giving anyone a chance to solve it. He constantly made mistakes so that made it extra hard to keep up with what he was doing. Never did reviews before tests. I am usually very good at math and through all my years of school he was my least favorite math teacher.
I took him before, he gives long lectures, and pretty boring. I learned everything for the tests by myself. . His tests arent that bad, they can stump you though. Just do questions in the book and your good. So far he's giving a retake , and he give Extra credit if u do the hw before the test (5pts) He went to MIT (his lectures are like MIT)
Unless math is second nature for you, don't take him. He spent most of our lectures talking about space shuttles and then muttering about math. Makes a lot of mistakes on the board, very confusing, and not very helpful when asked questions.
Horrible teacher, would never take him again. Has painfully long lectures scribbles on the board writes so small makes mistakes. The only good thing about this class is that he counts homework as extra credit on the test. Does not put grades online. You have to teach yourself in this class or you will fail. Hard to follow along and take notes.
Malaret was an engineer so he makes his lectures along those lines and if youre an engineering major id definitely take him. He makes class interesting and makes you think and understand above all and not just do the math. Fantastic professor
Prof. Hiram Malaret was a nice guy, lectures were pretty pointless I never really listened. Attendance is mandatory but all you have to do is sign in. Stay caught up on MyMathLab and review and actually learn the material through the chapters on there and you will succeed in his class.
He talks so fast and runs over material so quickly that you question all the material that you already know. He goes over what you know in a new way to confuse you then doesn't sit on topics long enough to sink it in. If you are a tactile learner you might as well pull your book out and ignore the lectures, because you have a lot of studying ahead.
He is such a nice professor and gives out so much grade improvement such as take home test, retake test, correct test for xtra credit but he is very hard to understand and makes alot alot of errors when teaching.. and his handwriting..o boy lets not get started. overall i recommend him bc of all the grade boost he gives. easy to pass if u do hw
Great teacher. His class is hard, but he really wants his students to understand that math. He cares, and is really nice. If you need any help he is great to ask.
Prepare to do a lot of self study. He does not explain anything, doesn't give you any guidelines to study, he knows his stuff but he should not teach as he has absolutely no capability to make you understand anything.
Nice guy but can't teach! He might be a good guy outside of class to talk to. He is not good at teaching at all!
Professor Malaret 'tries' to help you when asked for. However, his approaches are not quite clear. You get the feeling of being more confused after asking a question than you were before. He reads from the book most of its lectures (which we all can do at home) and works out almost none of the problems assuming you know the material already. BAD!!!
Overall he is ok. The positives to his class is that he is very flexible about test make ups, homework/quiz extensions, and decent extra credit. Also, the tests are pretty much laid out exactly like the homework. Negatives are that his lectures are pretty bland, he makes lots of errors, and gets lost. So you pretty much have to teach yourself.
He's a really, really nice guy, not such a great teacher. He gives a ton of extra credit, retake on any test of your choosing, is extremely lenient about due dates and will work with you. He rearranged several of our exam dates just to help us out as a class. Exams are basically the homework. Not an easy class, but definitely can be done.
Professor Malaret is a nice guy, but this class very difficult. All the HW is online, he does not give out study guides, or any quizzes. It is hard to prepare for Tests in this class. Lectures are very confusing. Even on review days he starts the next lecture, it is very difficult to test prep. Tests are long, tons of HW. Grades fairly, lots of EC.
He is a very nice professor. However, if you dont have amazing work ethic, not willing to spend over 10 hrs per chapter on homework, i would not recommend this class. By the end of the semester, many people withdrew. However, there is a test retake, homework is 5 extra points per test, and a take home test, which helps improve your grade in class.
