Very approachable, knowledgeable, and helpful. Lectures with him are fun for the most part - he's really nice and funny. He really wants people to succeed, and always lets us know about office hours, mentoring sessions, etc. Great professor overall
The class is hard, honestly. The material is confusing and difficult if you're only taking it for your major but aren't good with numbers. However, there are lots of office hours held by TA's, Jin, and lab assistants, and if you use resources, you can do okay. Jin is hilarious and wants you to succeed. You have to put the time in to absorb it all.
He really wants to help you and has a lot of office hours. However, he goes quickly and annoyingly doesn't always tell you the formulas for the homework. His powerpoints are especially wordy and not to the point, which creates confusion and is difficult to keep up. Even if you know the material well, the exams are still very hard and worded poorly
Great professor/ guy --very understanding and easy to talk to. Lectures are boring, but that's mostly cause of the material (he tries to make them interesting and funny). Attendance done through clickers (2 free skips), but honestly paying attention to lectures is the most important thing; so go to class. Take him over Gong 100%. Still difficult.
THE BEST. An amazing professor and guy tries really hard to make everything interesting. Lowest homework and lab grade are dropped, always reviews before exams. Definitely take him.
When it comes to QTM, Jin is the best professor to have. But, don't make the mistake that I made and think that because he's great the class will be easy. The class is going to be the hardest and most time consuming you will take and unless you got an A in AP Statistics, you won't do well. Jin doesn't provide extra credit like the other professors.
Jin was awesome, he has a great personality and makes lectures very fun. Come to class because although he posts all of his slides, he mentions a lot of important things that aren't on the slides and goes over various examples. Don't buy a clicker for his class cause you wont use it for a grade, just practice stuff. Prepare to work for your grade.
Jin is a great professor! I didn't take AP Stat in high school, and he made the material easy to understand and relatable with current research. He's very approachable and funny too. The class is extremely doable if you pay attention during lecture and get lots of practice through QTM mentors!
QTM100 is hard already and honestly horrible, but Jin makes it doable. Just come to the lecture prepared and take advantage of the TAs and their office hours. If you have an AP Stat background, amazing! I didn't, so I had to work a little bit hard. Don't buy a clicker, you don't really need it.
I love Jin! I had him this semester and QTM is hard already, but he does such a good job during lectures teaching students the material. I always understood the new material as I leave the class. Just go to the lectures and stay engaged and it will all be ok! I discovered I love QTM thanks to Jin.
He's a good teacher but unless you've taken AP stats before and did well on it other profs might be a better choice. His exams are somewhat difficult. I usually got the impression that I did well but then once scores come out I realize that I did ok but not as well as I thought I did.
The lectures are really just him reading off his slides and you don't get much from them. They're boring and class is literally only lectures. You won't know what you truly don't know until you take the test and fail. Our class average on our midterm was a 67% and he thought 70% was our goal. Lab is just as difficult if you take crystal grant
Professor Kim is the BEST! He makes his lectures fun and as long as you pay attention you'll do fine on the tests.
Professor Kim is a great lecturer and very charismatic. The tests aren't terrible if you study well and do the homeworks. He makes statistics much more interesting and relates it to the real world. Hard to have face to face interaction with him due to the sheer size of the QTM section, but seems like a chill dude overall.
Go to lectures just so that you learn more about what's no the tests. If you don't go to lectures, the test will definitely unnecessarily be more difficult. The lectures go fast if you haven't taken AP Stats before, so go to office hours, TA hours, and mentor hours. You don't need a clicker. So don't buy one...
Don't make the mistake I did by thinking you'll be fine if you took AP Stats in high school and did well. I did not take people seriously when they said this class required a lot of work. GO TO LECTURE. Listen during class taking minimal notes by hand and then take notes from the slides afterward. Don't buy a clicker. And go to office hours.
doesn't really give extra credit curved in the end. honestly, this class isn't too difficult it just is unnecessarily harder to get an A because the tests are 30 multiple choice, so if you miss one that's already 3% deducted from your midterm grade. only went to lectures for clicker question answers but if you study from the lectures its doable.
He's a really nice professor but his tests are definitely harder than the other qtm professors. However, he is one of the best qtm 100 professors you can get so if you want to get a good lecture then take him! It will be tough but if you work for it you'll be fine.
Prof. Kim's lectures are mostly boring (due to the content) but he puts so much effort in making it interesting and jokes now and then to bring some humor. He is very accessible outside of class, which is very convenient considering that some concepts can be tricky. The tests were hard and many questions were confusing.
Kim is pretty decent, but I didn't get much out of the way he taught. He reads from the slides and spends a bit too much time trying to relate the content to everyday life. Textbook is only used for homework, best thing to do is go to office hours & ask questions. He covers what is necessary, but the class was sorta blah. Exams are fair but hard.
Definitely the best QTM prof. You don't need the clicker or the textbook, and if you've already taken AP stats the course is a breeze. If you haven't taken AP stats, the course goes by fast, but definitely don't underestimate it in the beginning. The lab that goes with it is both banal and useless, but boosts the end grade.
If you took AP Stats, the course covers a lot of lecture content. It's a pretty dry subject, but he really tries to make it interesting and apply it to real life. He posts the slides, but it's worth showing up as much as possible. If you're having trouble, I hear Mentors sessions helped, but I managed without it
Good option for QTM 100. I hear he's better than the other QTM professor. You don't have to go to lecture, but it is beneficial since he'll sometimes hint at questions on the test. Tests make up soo much of your grade. It was a really hard class for me but I didn't take AP Stat. Make sure to print slides before to take notes in class.
Prof Kim is a great person and professor. He genuinely wants you to succeed and has no problem going over the same concepts repeatedly in order for you to understand. He's generally accessible and has a lot of office hours to see either him or his TA's. He tries to keep lectures informative, humorous, and engaging. His tests are hard but fair.
did not take AP stats in high school and this class was very doable. the tests are kind of hard because if you miss one mc, a lot of points are taken off. but, if you just study the lectures and go to mentor sessions, the class is not so bad.
Dr. Kim is a great teacher - outside of the classroom. QTM 100 is a difficult class to do well in if multiple choice is not your thing, but Dr. Kim is super available in office hours. He genuinely wants his students to do well and learn the material. I would definitely recommend Dr. Kim, however, don't take QTM 100 if you dont have to.
This course is easy if you took AP Stat or anything similar in the past. The tests are very fair. Ho Jin Kim provides problem sets and occasional homework to reinforce material and is very accessible outside class. The lab section is definitely too much outside work for being only 50 minutes a week but is doable. Nice, funny professor.
QTMs a hard class but Kim is your best option. I didn't take AP stats and got an A-. He's very clear and willing to help you out. He's also really funny.
QTM 100 kind of sucks, but if you have to take it, take it with Dr. Kim. He's really funny, seems to care about his students, and is readily available outside of class. He really wants to see his students succeed.
DO NOT TAKE QTM 100 LIGHTLY. I took stats b4 so i didn't take the course seriously. BIG MISTAKE. stats in general is difficult bc of a lot of minor but important details. if you put in the genuine work, you will be fine (go to class!). Kim was AMAZING - engaging, funny, and very helpful. do not take qtm if you dont have to; if you have to, take Kim
The midterm was 30 MCQs and the final was 45 MCQs, making it hard to get a good grade. However, the exams are fair and reflect what is taught in class. Kim is an amazing professor - lectures are engaging and humorous. Attend class. Clickers and textbook aren't needed (there's an online pdf). Lab is a lot of work but follow along and you'll be fine.
He definitely wants his students to succeed, I never took AP Stats in high school but I found the material to be accessible thanks to him. However, unless you were a stats whiz , you will need to go to study sessions and/or office hours! The lab helps boost your grade in the end, so long as you do the work. He's funny and nice, so take him!
QTM100 isn't the best class but Dr. Kim does his best to make lectures engaging and help students when he can. Tests are fair and multiple choice which is super nice. You don't need any stats background to do well as long as you study well for the midterm and the final.
His tests are not like the practice ones at all. You have to know the concepts well or else the exams will be a mess. The weekly mentor sessions are somewhat helpful.
QTM 100 is a tough course and Jin doesn't make it better. He's constantly bragging about how many of his students do poorly. His tests are all MC so there's little wiggle room for your exam grades. Small curve on tests since a ton of people did poorly. Avoid QTM at all costs if you can, but if you MUST take it, Jin is probably the best bet.
He is very caring and understanding. He is always willing to help out his students and is very straight forward with what is needed to be done.
To be honest, this class is required for many majors so there is no avoiding it. That being said, it is very difficult to do well unless you attend mentoring sessions, go to lectures, and put the time into the homework. This class is extremely difficult, especially if you have no background in statistics. The lectures aren't very interesting.
QTM is a poorly-designed class and you likely won't enjoy it with anyone, but Kim truly does his best to mitigate the pain and help you succeed. Though there is very little room for error on tests and the coding lab is finicky, Kim's lectures are funny and helpful--don't skip them. More office hours than any other professor I've seen at Emory.
This class is horrifically designed. Your entire grade is defined by exams that you will only do well on if you invest around 8-10 hours a week on QTM. Unfortunately it is unavoidable so,Go to every lecture, office hours, mentoring sessions, study for a week prior to the exam, and get close to a 100 in the lab to save your grade.
I took AP Stats, so I didn't really learn anything in this class (not his fault - I know). My main criticism would be that he goes off on long tangents of stories that are unrelated to the material. The class period is just too long for the little material he needs to get through each day. The tests were still too hard for what the class was.
I took AP stats in HS during my junior year so relearning the material through just the lectures wasn't too bad, but if you have never taken stats, make sure you complement the lectures with the textbook reading and practice problems. Make sure you stay on top of the lab work (easy A!! and a major % of your grade) to do well in this class!
Kim's lectures are super engaging, his office hours are helpful, and he will work with you to make sure you understand the content. He's kind and funny. Despite this, it's insanely hard. Take a light course load when you take this class. Go to office hours (lecture & lab) and EPASS. Devote at least 1.5 hrs a day. It's easy to fall behind - DON'T!
Professor Kim is a great guy, helps you and the class when needed, but he does not teach at all. It is virtually a self-taught class, virtually a virtual class. In class you just take quizzes and go over logistics for the next week's lab, homework, and quiz. I was not impressed with his teaching although I like the guy.
Considering how tedious intro stats can be, I thought Dr. Kim was very engaging and comprehensible with his explanations. Despite not having a stats background, I was able to keep up with my more seasoned peers. Lab quizzes are straightforward, project is a lot but start early and get help from your lab TA - you'll be fine. Study a lot for exams.
Intro statistics is a dry subject, but Jin makes it more than tolerable. His lectures are engaging and clear, and he makes sure to emphasize key concepts. Overall, if you took stats in high school, this class shouldn't be too difficult.
QTM 100's a tough class where you really have to work for it, but Dr. Kim makes it bearable. I'm glad I had him as my QTM prof.
Dr Kim makes lectures engaging and I like his sense of humor. He explains concepts very clearly so if you haven't taken stats before, don't worry. Definitely attend mentoring sessions. Tests are going to be harder than you think so start studying early. Lab can be a lot of work if your group members are not helpful.
Get ready to do 6 credit hours worth of work for a 4 credit hour class. The exams are unbelievably hard and nothing like the homework or quizzes. Jin Kim doesn't care about you. Your circumstances don't matter to him. Watching the online lectures feels like watching paint dry.
Dr. Kim is a great statistics teacher, his lectures are informative and cover everything you will see on the exam. Tests are not too bad if you attend lectures, do the HW, and attend office hours. Flexible office hours.
greater professor. he can explain things really well to students. I have not taken AP stat, but was able to understand the concepts pretty well when he explained it. The tests are somewhat difficult because he does not test you on calculations. There are barely any calculation problems. He tests you on understanding and conceptual problems more.
QTM100 is a dry, tedious, annoying class but Jin almost made it tolerable. Enthusiastic in lectures and highlights key concepts well. Exams can be tricky and there's little room for error. If you've taken AP Stats you'll be fine, if not you'll have to work for it. Has lots of office hours and is willing to help. Good choice IF you need QTM100.
Ho Jin Kim is the best! I had his first ever class at Emory, and hes so engaging and funny and truly a caring professor. Very accessible and helpful outside of class too. QTM100 is a tough class but he makes it bearable for sure.
I did not care about statistics even one iota before taking this course, but QTM 100 with Dr. Jin Kim was just great. Definitely the most fun course I took last semester. Would highly recommend!
Stats is super dry but QTM 100 with Dr. Jin was amazing. Just a really funny, intelligent dude, makes the content somehow seem interesting. Cannot recommend him enough.
Dr. Kim tries his best to make QTM interesting, and he really cares about his students! He's also super funny. It's definitely a difficult class, but intro STEM classes are supposed to be, and I don't think the difficulty reflects on who he is as a professor. Great guy, and always fun to listen to.
One of the most understanding and caring professors in my experience. Very fair and often lenient with grading.
Im glad that I took Kim for QTM! The summer class was (expectedly) fast-paced. Kim was super accessible outside of class and lectures were good even at 8am. However, the weekly quizzes are easy to fumble on (8 questions) and he went back on his word about the final exam format a few times. Luckily lab brought my grade up to an A!
I really enjoyed Dr. Kim's class. I had never taken a statistics class before, but Kim made the content very easy to understand and went slowly when he knew the content he was covering was confusing. He also gives individualized feedback on all the exams and really cares about what his students are learning from his class. Overall, would recommend!
Dr. Kim is fine, but his lectures are boring and makes me easily zone out. He tends to over-explain things which loses my attention. I also didn't learn anything new because I took AP Stats, so I didn't see the point in taking this class. The lab for QTM 100 was just annoying and was only graded by group assignments and projects.
Professor Kim is very clear, accessible outside of class, and provides 1% extra credit. However, he is not understanding of your personal situation and will make assurances about grades that he will not actually change. The class structure is poor, there are daily quizzes that are unnecessarily fast paced that took away from class time.
Super hard class. Avoid him if you can. The weekly quizzes were super fast paced. I don't know anyone who got above an A- in this class. Most people did poorly on the quizzes. He gives you 20 minutes to do a ton of coding. He is also a harsh grader on the group projects. The group projects also take forever. Don't take him!!
Kim is a nice and kind guy. BUT, for this 1 credit course, he made it super stressful and hard. Don't teach during the class. Spend 25mins quizzes each week, and the quizzes are not easy. He just threw a file to you without fully explain it. For a person who had no coding experience, other professors will be much better.
Dr. Kim is by far the BEST option for QTM 100. While the class got boring at times, it's hard to captivate a 200 person lecture hall so I don't blame him. Really good at breaking down concepts. All class material including exams was based off the textbook, so reviewing was easy. Class average for the 3 exams was about an 80. Nice and funny guy.
Dr. Kim is easily one of the best professors I've had at Emory. I did not like statistics in high school, but he makes lectures enjoyable. He always gives students the benefit of the doubt and records every lecture. He offers 1-on-1 meetings to go over missed exam questions and is always willing to go over time. Super engaging and friendly.
QTM 100 is a rough class in general, but Kim makes it bearable. He moves slowly with concepts and since the course has 3 midterms and many other assignments, no one grade will make or break you. However, his lectures are painfully dull and he often goes on unnecessary tangents. Would recommend for this class, though.
This class over the summer is VERY OVERWHELMING. Mini exams every Tuesday, lots of quizzes, lab homework, lab quizzes, and lecture homework. If you stay on top of everything and try your best, I think you will do fine! He teaches in a way that's understandable for any major of any type. I didn't take AP Stat in high school and he was a great choice
This rating is for QTM 100 taken in Spring 2022. Dr. Kim gives great, funny, organized lectures. The class has a lot of nonstop homework but it's easy enough that it'll bring up your grade. Exams are tough but fair.
Content is not super interesting but this is a required course for almost every major so he makes it manageable. Not super difficult as long as you do the homework and worksheets. Grade is mostly based on 2 midterms and final so make sure to study for them
Dr. Kim is a really great professor. I didn't take stats in high school, and still did very well in the class. He bases a lot of the tests off the mentoring worksheets and sometimes hw so doing that is a good idea. Lectures are pretty engaging, and he is very accessible in office hours. The lab is wack though, but your group is good you're fine.
Definitely the best option out of the other QTM professors. Lots of office hours and LA sessions (highly recommend you attend those to do well on the midterms). Two midterms and one final, worth a total of 55% of your grade. Didn't take stats in high school, but highly recommend you read the textbook.
Nice and funny guy. Didn't take stats in high school but course was doable with success very much in reach. There are weekly homeworks and quizzes which is annoying but not bad. He does overexplain things, but provides LOTS of supplementary resources plus class recordings so if his lectures aren't your thing there are lots of different options.
Professor Kim was well respected because of the respect he showed to his students. Although QTM100 was particularly tough, I was able to understand the majority of the information because of his lectures and extra help outside of class.
!!NOT A 100 level class!! sucks bc this is required for so many majors but seems completely irrelevant...after class average was below 70 for the second midterm he cancelled office hours because he "didn't want to deal with the drama"
QTM 100 is a pre-req so couldn't really choose to take it or not. Though I initially felt intimidated by him when I didn't understand basic concepts, as you progress through QTM 100, things make more sense and I start to realize he wants to help his students. Advice: go to office hours!!! go to the LA sessions (esp Yash)!!! Go to EPASS tutoring!
Kim is awesome and chill, very accommodating with the tests and online quizzes. The class average is sometimes low because many students do not care about the course, NOT because he is a bad professor. Study well and you'll be fine.
He really cares about his students. The content is heavy but if you stay on top of it, you will be fine. He offers a lot of his time and provides many resources.
I didn't enjoy how the exams for this class were structured. They're all multiple choice and only out of 30-40 points so if you miss a few questions then your grade is sunk. Other than that, I'd never really done stats but the content was fine and he was a good lecturer, read the textbook and go to LA sessions if the lecture format isn't working.
hard course and midterms but easy final. If you learn Ap statistics before, then you will be fine. Otherwise, you have to put in hard work. Lecture are very helpful but i recommend reading textbook. Not mandatory attendance. Accessible outside of class.
I hate stats, but the course wasn't that bad. Put in the work to understand fundamentals and it should be free. Wish he'd post answers to the questions on his lecture slides.
Not the easiest class, but Dr. Kim was very reasonable and provided several extra credit opportunities. Go to LA sessions, take lecture notes, and you'll be fine. Final was much easier than both midterms. The lab is the worst part in my opinion but an A in the class is very doable if you put in some time and work.
He is the best of a very bad situation out of the QTM department, which does not take away from the fact he's an awful lecturer. He tends to over-explain concepts which makes you zone out real real quick. The exams are graded out of 25 points, so missing one question has a huge impact on your grade. There's also an obscene amount of busywork.
Literally AP statistics but condensed into one semester. Can't stress enough how important it is to read the textbook (which is free btw).
Put in the work and you'll be fine. Lectures are impressively engaging for boring QTM content, but I almost never went because notes are posted.
Dr. Kim is the best! I was nervous coming into QTM 100 not having taken AP Stats, but he made me feel as though I could do it. He made 8:30am lectures engaging & kept me motivated to come to class. The class is heavy with assignments every week, but they are helpful to make sure you know the content before the exam. The exams are fair imo.
I took AP Statistics in high school so I didn't show up to lectures and ended up doing fine. He assigns a lot of homework, so submit that on time and correctly, and you should do fine. The lab is the stupidest class I have ever taken and shouldn't be a thing, so choose people wisely for the group projects and you can trauma bond over QTM Lab.
This class was so insanely boring and awful, I genuinely will never take another QTM class again because of my experience with this class. To my pre-meds required to take this class, get through the busy work and move on.
Great professor. One of my favorites at Emory. Going to office hours helps a lot w/ the class. Also most of the test material is in the book and the lecture slides. If you put the work, you'll be fine. However, it's a very time-consuming course. There are homeworks and quizzes every week, but you'll definitely learn. Take him fall freshman year.
He is a great professor, its the subject thats hard. The textbook he uses is free online, he makes that clear in the beginning of the class. Honestly you have to put in some work for this, no matter the professor.
Dr. Kim is a really great lecturer who gives it his all, and makes statistics a lot less boring. Skipping lectures is fine, but sometimes he gives hints about what will be on the tests so I recommend attending. The hw for both the lecture and lab can be annoying, but it is what it is. Definitely recommend taking his class, no regrets.
Very straightforward and simple teacher. At times, the lectures can be boring, but he does a great job at covering the material. It is somewhat easy to get an A, especially if you have taken AP stats in the past. Highly recommend him for those who need to take QTM.
Compared to what I've heard about the other QTM100 professor he is definitely the one to take. The class was harder than I thought and I did almost fall asleep during class but otherwise it was an okay experience.
Professor Kim is very good at explaining the concepts and making sure that students understand. He is definitely the best QTM 100 professor as he has also been teaching it for many years. It's a grind having the R labs on Friday's too but if you study very hard you should be good for the exams.
Dr. Kim is such a caring professor; his lectures are very funny and important to the midterm. The textbook is free and it should be read as it contains many good practice problems and offers alternative explanations to ideas.
He is the best QTM teacher you could take. He is funny and lets you use a cheat sheet on tests so you don't have to study much. Labs now don't have quizzes so all your tested on is lecture exams and lab projects which are easily manageable.
If you didnt take AP Stat ur screwed. Covers all of AP stat and more in 1 semester. I got put into a terrible lab group with people who didn't do work, which tanked my grade. The lab is tedious, and the lab TAs are not helpful. The tests are confusing and unnecessarily hard. They are mostly conceptual, with applications and very little math.
Professor Kim would be great... if QTM 100 was not an intro level class. Dr. Kim takes lots of time to offer office hours, is engaging (mostly) in lectures and even provides extra credit opportunities at the end of the semester. That being said, for an intro class required by multiple non-stem departments, the difficulty is borderline unreasonable.
Topics themselves can be confusing and sometimes he can be round about in the way he is explaining. The best QTM 100 professor to take! He gives ~2.5% extra credit onto final grade if you attend some events, etc. Attending zoom office hours is VERY HELPFUL! Overall very nice guy who cares about who his students are, and learns students names.
HORRIBLE CLASS. The 2 midterms + final are nothing like the WEEKLY QUIZZES/homework. They are largely conceptual instead of finding a numerical answer, and many almost seem like trick questions. I worked with several LAs and going into the 2nd midterm they said I knew everything, and then I literally failed it. He also doesn't do personal meetings.
Apparently he's the best QTM100 professor??? I can't even believe how bad the others must be if "the best" is like this. Worst class I've ever taken, unnecessarily difficult.
Meh teacher. If you go to class and pay attention, you should be chilling. Take lab seriously and form a good group.
for an 100 level class, there's a lot of work. go to lectures, take notes, go to office hours and LA sessions. every week go through your notes. lab is coding with R, only got through that cuz my friend is good at coding. take this class with friends so you can study and do quizzes together. he tests actual concepts and less math. prepare to work
If you attend lectures and pay attention you should be fine. He also provides extra credit. LA sessions were very helpful.
Dr. Kim was a great lecturer and made class engaging despite it being early. It is beneficial to have prior knowledge from AP stats, but if you go to the lectures and do the homework, it is not difficult to do well as Dr. Kim bases the exams off of lecture materials.
unless required don't take this class. his lecture slides are terrible and doesn't teach anything. take it only if u have taken ap stats before. awful teacher and slides
Don't be scared by the other reviews, just somewhat pay attention (it's hard) and do all the work and you'll be fine (yes, even without prior experience). If you thought it was a class you could just slug your way through, you are sorely mistaken; this is all knowledge you want to have and you need it to pass the class (pretty crazy right).
Im a freshman on pre-nursing, so QTM 100 was one of my prerequisites. I took this class with Jin this fall, and I really enjoyed it! For anyone - whether you took AP stat or not - qtm is content heavy. I definitely vibed with jin on day 1, as we both share the same sarcastic/dry sense of humor. He also gives extra credit - 2.5% if i remember
Don't be scared by the bad ratings! The class is very doable if you put in some effort to actually understand the material. He is a really good lecturer and explains conceptual things well so you don't need prior stats knowledge to do good in the course. Just stay on top of hw, class content, and lab assignments and you will be okay!!
Wish I could rate the course instead of the prof because he was fine. Labs and homework are very doable, but they do take some time. The problem was the tests. The 30-question multiple-choice format leaves little room for error. The final was better, but the practice material paled in comparison to the test content. Just go to lectures and study.
