Best class ever. Just go to class and rack up bonus points. Her homework is easy and her tests are like the homework. Nice as can be if you aren't an ass. Clone Hoda for future generations.
Read the newspaper during class. Incredibly easy and she gives bonus points more than John Kerry flip-flops. Can't understand a word, but hey that's what the book is for. Easy tests. Just turn the newspaper pages while she's not looking and you'll be OK.

harsh grader on hW, i had her as a TA
Hoda (as she likes to be called) was a joy to have. She is funny, makes great jokes that only an older Egyptian woman can get away with, and ACTUALLY TEACHES: which I find difficult to come by in the Econ Dept. NO boring analogies, NO good ole boy stories. Just economics and how to figure them out. I will take her again if I can.
This class was honestly a waste of time. I did not learn anything, and economics is my major, so that is somewhat disappointing. I did not go to class and received A's on all of my tests. The homework assignments can be completed by reading the book. She reads straight from the powerpoint slides and cannot be understood at all.
I had Professor El-Karasky for honors macro and she was AWESOME! She is very respectful, nice, and intelligent. Though she has an accent, she is always able to get her meaning across.
Had her for Honors Macro. Such a sweet and helpful teacher. She genuinely wants her students to understand the material and do well in the class. Yeah, she has an accent, but I NEVER had any problem understanding her. I got an A in her class. I highly recommend taking her!
Very very nice lady, has a mild accent but you can definitely understand her. All her test material comes straight from the homeworks, sometimes its the exact same questions and answer.
SO easy. Just be sure to take your time going over homework and extra questions she gives because the questions for the test are straight from them, word for word, and even the same letter choice. She does actually teach too so you come out learning something. Win-Win.
Had her for honors macro, she is such a sweet lady and is always willing to help you if you don't understand something! Definitely recommend her!
I took her honors class and wound up with an A+. She really wants all of her students to do well and end up with a good grade. As long as you try hard, she will reward you for your efforts.
Dr. Elkarsky is delightful. If you respect her she will reward you, so definitely come to class. She enjoys teaching and really wants to make sure you understand the subject. Do your homework, study, sit in the exact same spot, and participate in class and stay off your cell phone and don't leave without telling her ahead of time.
She cannot understand when you ask her questions and just repeats what the textbook says to you with an accent. She does not help anyone understand concepts beyond the textbook and will shoot down any question that cannot be answered with the book by picking and choosing words to listen to so she can answer with something from the book.
Sweet woman but i would not recommend her. her lectures are all over the place and it is difficult to understand her. hard grader on discussion posts. has good intentions but i would advise another class!
Hoda knows everything about what she teaches. She has a unique international perspective, which is great for EC111. Has an Egyptian accent, but easy enough to understand. I would recommend her, tests are easy, so is HW. Go to class and participate and she'll gives bonus. Much easier than the non-honors section. Take her!
She is a very nice person, except she is a little strict in class. In class, she just reads the power points and tries to explain it. She has an Egyptian accent, but she is not hard to understand except her english is a little choppy. I took her for Honors and we only have four homework assignments and four tests. She gives extra credit twice.
One of the worst teachers I have ever had. Has pretty much no idea what she's talking about and gets defensive if you ask her even simple questions. Class is easy, but she essentially reads the book slides to you.
Dr. El-Karasky is the worst professor I have had at the university. Take this class if you want to watch her read slides for 3 hours a week- with required attendance- and yell at students for asking questions. She is the worst.
Hard to understand accent, and simply reads slides. If you take her class you'll be teaching yourself the course
I took her Honor Egyptian Culture class as my fine arts and it wasn't what I expected. She was nice enough but rude if you were wrong about something in Egypt. She knows it all since she lived there apparently. There is also a lot of papers and she's a hard grader. If you can handle that much work in a fine arts class, go for it!
Hoda is the worst economics professor I have had at the University. She is rude to students and will condescend to them in class if a question is asked. Be prepared to read the book. She does not explain concepts well and read off of the slides. Very boring professor to say the least. I highly recommend taking another course.
Not the worst professor I've ever had- she's the worst teacher I have ever experienced in my life. Can't understand a word she says in class because her lack of mastery of the English language is outdone only by her lack of mastery of Economics.
The worst teacher I have ever had. It is almost a waste of time attending her class. She isn't fluid in the English language at all. She is also, hands down, the rudest teacher I have experienced. I know all of this sounds harsh, but it's all true.
This is by far the worst professor I have encountered thus far. She is rude and her level of helpfulness is minimal for her students. It also very hard to understand her because of her thick accent.
Honestly, one of the worst teachers I've ever had at UA. She routinely fails over 50% of the class, refuses to curve the tests, and blames the students even though there are countless of us asking for clarification. Many questions are met with screams of "You just don't it" and no effort to help. The average for other classes is A's, hers is F.
Her english is poor and lectures are like listening to a lawn mower run for an hour. very rude to students. annoyingly refuses to conduct any class business over email. lectures are entirely based around her reading power points to you. makes frequent grading errors and its hard to get her to fix them. fairly easy A if you try though.
Quite possibly the worst teacher I have had at the University of Alabama. Her accent is difficult to understand and consistently sends botched emails in broken English. She is rude to students who ask her simple questions and will do nothing for you unless you visit during her office hours. Do not expect to get any help from her exam reviews.
She is by far the most horrible teacher at this university she does not help any students and will never answer any of the questions the students have. He is very hard to understand and will not clarify what she has said. AVOID AT ALL COSTS!
Putting aside her rude comments to students in class who are trying to participate, her class is horribly boring, and you can barely understand her. You might as well not even go to class, you have to teach the whole course yourself. Hard tests. Do not recommend.
One of the best professors in the department. Very clear and makes herself available at anytime! Answers all questions, and returns emails promptly.
Hoda is undoubtedly the worst professor that I have taken at the Capstone. She is unclear in class and reads powerpoint slides instead of teaching the material. She is unprofessionally rude to students and shuts down students who ask questions or try to get help. I took this class because it was at a good time. Worst mistake I've made in college.
Terrible teacher! Cannot understand material taught in class and also the tests are really hard without a curve. Homework and exam reviews are worth 10% each and the tests are 80% of your grade. Only took this class based on time, otherwise, would not recommend at all.
The teacher is foreign and very hard to understand. I tried my hardest not to fall asleep every class. Plus she is mean.
This is one of the hardest classes I have ever taken!!! Economics alone is a difficult concept to master but she makes it even worse!! She does not help you and will only tell you to study in advance. DO NOT TAKE HER if you do not want your GPA to drop!!!
HORRIBLE. mean and foreign. does not explain anythings and yells at you if you ask a question. dont do hoda.
Had Dr. Hoda for intermediate macro. It was a hard class not only because the material was hard, but also because she is hard to understand, and doesn't convey the material very well. Reading the book and doing the Aplia is important to learn the material. By the way, there is A LOT of Aplia to do. Also, the exams and reviews are not easy.
Prior to taking this class, I was extremely interested in business. Now as the semester is coming to an end, I hate it. Not only was the course difficult to begin with, but she made it extremely impossible due to the fact that no one could understand a word she was saying. Terrible communication skills and not very helpful. SO much Aplia work!
By far the worst professor I have had yet. She is very hard to understand. The Aplia homework is painfully tedious and due at different times than specified in class. Do yourself a favor and avoid this professor.
Hoda is very hard to understand and when you ask a question or answer a question wrong she makes you feel like you are in preschool. But at the end of the year she does drop a lot of grades. Attendance is mandatory but you get 2 points to your final grade which is nice
Hoda is something else. I took her because it was the only course open. She is very hard to understand, as she has a very heavy accent. She is a sweet lady, but you won't be able to understand a word. I did homework for other classes during lecture, read the book and did well. You can pass with studying, she also gives extra credit.
Tough course. She is not helpful. She does care about her students and she will give lots of extra credit and curve up exams; however, that is because she does not convery the material well. I found the course unpleasant.
She gives a lot of extra points and is good on curving, but by far the worst class I have taken at UA so far. She's very difficult to understand, concepts aren't clear. I'd learn better if I just read the lessons myself from the book. Don't take her!!
Mean. Hard to understand. Rude when you ask a question in class. Not helpful in office hours. Gives out random extra credit tho. Avoid her.
Worst prof I've had at UA. Spends more time trying to command attention in a 400 person lecture room with sillyness like assigned seats than teaching the material. She assigns a lot of online homework that is nothing like the examples from class. Frustrating to communicate with and will promise scantrons will be available & goes back on her word.
Hoda is the WORSE instructor avaiable for this course. dont waste your time or brain usage in this class. she has the heaviest accent so you cant understand what she's saying. she never responds to emails. only about half the stuff she says is relevant to the stuff actually on the test. AVOID AT ALL COST!!!!
People complain too much about the difficulty of this class. Hoda blows, but that doesn't mean the class isn't easy. As long as you are ok teaching yourself the material(which you will honestly learn through doing homework), and you actually do the homework, you will be fine.
These previous reviews had me concerned before starting her class as she was the only one available. From my experience, she was actually pretty nice and willing to answer questions. She does have an accent, but I didn't think she was too hard to understand.
There is no communicating with this woman. Very unpleasant. Her class is the only one open so I have to take her again. Ughhhhhh
Least helpful prof I have had. could not follow or understand lectures at all. must teach yourself all the material.
She says attendance is just bonus points but then will complain about people not showing up. She calls people out for not paying attention, happened to me two days in a row. Grades 94 as A+. She has poor handwriting, writes on the board in red expo a lot. I can't see a word of it and I have perfect eyesight. Do not take her class.
Shes really not that bad. Go to class and she will tell you exactly whats one the test and gives you extra credit for no reason. The people who complain are on her bad side, and yea, you dont want to be on her bad side.
Very interesting class, with some dry spots however. Not a lot of quantitative information just conceptual. Lots of extra credit, curved exams, curved grading scale. Made 60's on first two tests, kept going to class, doing homework and got a B on the final. Finished with a B+, which a B+ in an international finance class looks impressive.
Thick accent, smart lady. Don't sit in the back because you'll definitely get called on.
Did not enjoy this class at all. Will sometimes snap and yell at students for getting answers incorrect in class. I didn't find the lectures all that helpful and taught myself all of the material, but the class really wasn't very hard.
This is the BEST honors teacher i've taken at UA. Highly recommended. Loads of extra credit and the tests are same as the practice tests. Take this teacher for an easy life.
I did not enjoy one bit on this class. It takes real effort to listen to her accent. Does not know how to teach and the notes does not relate much to the exams. You MUST teach yourself the material. I rather throw my money in the trash can than waste my money taking the class from this teacher.
She's not a bad teacher, but when she deviates from the slides and starts writing on the board, things can get confusing. She also is very easily offended by people talkingdistracting her and she will yell at you in front of everyone. Tests are way harder than the review she gives out.
Not a helpful Professor at all. She does give quite a bit of extra credit at the end of the semester, but is not a good teacher. She is rude, will not repeat herself in class if asked to go back to a graph or question. She is very rude and not a good teacher at all. Would NOT recommend.
Avoid at all costs!!! She was incredibly rude to students when they asked to go back and explain a previous slide and her lectures were very confusing when she got away from the slides. She is hard to follow and overall very rude. Definitely don't take her unless you absolutely have to.
Worst teacher of all time. Hoda Blows! Don't take her. Do yourself a favor and wait a semester if thats the only class you can get in. You can't understand a word that comes out of her mouth.
Not the worst teacher, she was just always so rude when students asked any questions. She is also very hard to understand. If possible find another professor for this class.
expect weekly online homework. Gives lots of extra credit. I had no idea what I was doing in the class and was expecting a low C but she must have curved it a lot because I left with an A+ (honestly not sure how this happened.) Not a great class but I put absolutely no effort in and did well so I would recommend her
Seems like it would be a difficult class, but not the case. She makes international finance fun and gives a very easy final. A little intense at times but she is very smart and will always help her students. Finished with a B+ TONS OF EXTRA CREDIT
Ended up being a total joke because of extra credit, but fairly confusing during the bulk of the semester
I understand why so many people hate her class (probably because of her attitude and accents), but it's relatively easy to get A on this class compare to other professors like Kent Zirlott and Tao-chen. I took all three of them due to dropping, but El-Karasky was the easiest econ class I have ever taken. The only problem is her accents.
She was really nice and definitely seemed to want everyone to do well. Communication could have been clearer about schedule changes. Quizzes/tests are multiple choice, but read all the options closely, they can be tricky. Just do the reading and homework and come to class, you'll do fine.
Apart from bonus for attendance, going to lectures is a waste of time. Very disorganized teaching, hard to understand. Gets angry with students easily. However, gives a ton of bonus, comprehensive finals are easy, and bad grades at the start of the semester can be rescued. Would still try to avoid her, but you'll end up taking her at some point.
do not take her. if you are signed up for her class swith asap. if there isnt another class switch majors
Ok, so shes a little abrasive but the way she structures her class is very easy to do well.
Tough to understand for me. Lectures can get very boring, she doesn't do anything to keep material interesting. Tests are not that difficult if you study a decent amount and plenty of extra credit is given so if you just show up and get good homework/quiz grades you should be fine.
The class is doable but she is mean. When students ask questions in lecture, she is very snappy. If you go to her office, she's a little nicer.
Dr. El-Karasky does not want to make this course hard. She gives a TON of extra credit. When you ask questions, she does not always answer them well. At first her accent was difficult to understand, but after a while you get used to it. If you have any background with economics, this should be an easy A.
Hoda can be hard to understand at times and when she tries to explain graphs it got pretty confusing. I personally think the book did a pretty good job of explaining everything. She does give some extra credit and will scale up any test when the class average is below a 75. She loves teaching and class participation. I finished with over a 100 avg.
This was her first semester teaching Economic Development in the Middle East. She is very knowledgeable in this field; however, the course was poorly structured. Only one test (a pass/fail midterm) but you have to write 5 reaction papers in response to 20+ page articles and a 15-17 page final paper with a presentation constituting your grade.
Honestly, one of the best professors I have had at UA! She is so nice & helpful! It was my first economics class and I struggled at first in this class. I went to her office hours and she helped me really understand it!!! It's a tough class but she really cares and wants to help all of her students! Take her if you get the chance!!! Love her class!
Looking for an easy econ class? take it. Looking for a meaningful learning experience? don't take it. She's a pretty bad teacher that gets frustrated with the class a lot. She expects students to answer in class questions and if they get it wrong she embarrasses them. She's hard to understand and a lot of her lectures don't make much sense.
Rude teacher, reviews are 10x harder than tests and she yells at the class for about 30% of the
Don't recommend. She gives boring lectures that aren't helpful and is hard to understand.
She's not too horrible. Her lectures are important. I didn't have as much of a problem as my classmates with the tests. There is Aplia and quizzes due every week for the most part. Her practice tests are kinda like the exams, and are helpful. She can be rude but I honestly don't think she means it. She very nice otherwise.
Extremely thick accent, very hard to understand. Makes this class 10 times harder.
I took Hoda for EC 110 and had to withdraw freshman year. She was the only professor available and i was very skeptical and quite frankly afraid to take her again, however i dont know what changed but she is a completely different person. Cracking jokes, making in-class quizzes take home, and you can make a 50 on test 1 and still make an A.
She takes attendance but it's only for bonus points. Her tests are hard and detailed but she curves if the average is below 75. I only went when she passed out scantrons for practice exams, to turn in the practice exam, and tests. I read the book because she's hard to understand. Go the last two weeks though, she gives a lot of extra credit then.
Sweet but stern, like a parent. Lectures can be so-so; read the textbook and take effective notes from that and tests won't be a problem. You MUST respect deadlines and due dates for assignments.
She alternates between being really nice and yelling at us for not answering her vague questions in a specific way. I enjoy listening to her talk about the Middle East, she's really knowledgeable and has great perspective. Read the textbook and pay specific attention to facts, because she will want to discuss them.
Be prepared to do a lot of reading for this class, and also a decent amount of writing. That being said, if you are interested in learning more about the Politics and the Economics of the Middle East and Northern Africa it is a great place to take- and Hoda has a ton of background knowledge on the subject. (She still teaches like usual though)
Mannnnn this class is a struggle. The only reason to go to class would be to get the bonus points for your average; it is almost impossible to take anything away from the lectures. Expect to grind about a week before the test - - if you read the book thoroughly and take notes you should be ok. SO Boring. I'm so bored I'm writing this during class.
Okay so it's not so much that you can't understand her since her accent is not bad at all especially compared to other professors but she doesn't explain things well at all. She requires attendance but doesn't teach well. Bring the book and read it in the back row. As noted she will talk very quietly then just start yelling randomly.
Sometimes it is hard to understand the accent. I took the class in NL 1000, even though my class size is relatively small. The microphone she uses sometimes doesn't work so it can be hard to hear. If you take her class, sit towards he front of the room to be able to hear better, assuming the large screen directly above you doesn't hurt your neck.
You cant understand her at all in class so going seems extremely pointless. You really need to be able to teach yourself economics to do well in this class. If economics isn't your strong-suit, do not take her class.
Hard to understand what she is saying. Loves to draw in front of the class. Teach yourself at home.
I do enjoy economics but coming to this class is such a drag, its and hour or lecture, she can't stay on topic and her inability to speak clear english makes it awful. Constantly covers the same topic durning a lecture that has no meaning to the material.
Unless you HAVE to take this teacher/class, don't. She's really rude and gets frustrated with the class way too easily. She says don't blame her accent if you can't understand her? Her lectures are pointless and do nothing for you in preparing for a test. Practice exams are either like the test or not at all.
I would say that skipping this class will ruin your grade however, the book is more helpful than the actual lectures themselves. Does not explain things in a clear way and is not effective as a professor in working out problems. Not an enjoyable time in the least bit and got bored within the first 25 mins of lecture.
Do NOT take this professor. She is rude to her students and her tests are nothing like the practice exams. The homework doesn't help at all and she reads right off the slides, which are online & and also don't prepare you for the test. Her accent is hard to understand, but she gets mad when students ask her to repeat herself.
If I could give her a negative rating I would. She is the worst teacher I think I have ever had. She is rude and will start yelling and getting mad at the class for no reason. Her tests are hard and her lectures are terrible. Save yourself and try not to take her.
Hoda El-Karasky is easily one of the most difficult teachers at the University. She yells at the class for doing nothing at all. Don't even try to pay attention to a lecture because you won't understand it. She goes over stuff during syllabus week but never fulfills it. Tests are nothing like the practice exams. DO NOT TAKE HER. Worst class expire
Couldn't be more disappointed about a class. So unfair to Hardworking students who go to class and complete homework assignments. If you don't do well on the tests you won't pass the class. Attendance policy is the worst I have ever seen. Can barely understand her and she yells at you if you as questions. STAY AWAY. This class will destroy your GPA
Awful teacher, never helps, lectures are awful. SPEAK HINDO I CANT UNDERSTAND HER. Worse than inspector cluso when it comes to annunciating. Teach yourself basically.
She is very difficult to understand and often times yells at students. i only bother to show up to class to just get my attendance points. the class is very heavily weighted on test. there are a lot of extra points you can get from the hw assignments if you do well . however i do NOT recommend her . honestly WORST teacher i have had at Bama so far
I loved this class! I disliked EC 110 so I was nervous for 111, but she made it interesting. You get bonus points if you don't miss more than 6 classes, but honestly you should go to class. If you just look at notes online (INCREDIBLE NOTES) and read the book, you should do good on the tests! There are required practice tests that help a lot.
She doesn't know how to teach the class. She has to check her notes every 2 minutes to remind herself what she's doing. Read the textbook and study hard for the tests. Attendance is mandatory but honestly she's so unbearable it's worth losing your attendance grade.
Hoda is the most difficult teacher I have had. She is from the Middle East so it is very difficult to understand her. She is also really petty and yells at the class!
So awful. I didn't do well in econ 110 and was told i might understand 111 but that was false. This woman gets mad at the strangest things and is so hard to understand. Her lectures put me to sleep and her tests are super hard. Wouldn't have taken this class if I knew it would be like this.
Hoda is... a very interesting professor to take. She started out the semester as a hard-nosed no-nonsense lady and softened as time went. Go to class, work hard, and for the love of god study her Questions for Study before every exam. We had 5 total points on our avg as extra credit papers and attendance and 5 points to our test avg. Learned a lot.
Had Hoda for 111 and was hesitant to take her 431 class. But, she is completely different in 400 level classes and I would recommend taking her for International Finance. You get to know her nice side and learn about some interesting topics!
Karasky's tests can be pretty tough, but there are plenty of ways to recover your grade through homework, quizzes, practice exams, and the bonus points for attendance. She can be very intimidating and hot tempered though. Also, if you need someone who is accessible outside of class, I would choose a different professor.
Throughout the semester I did not like her class at all because her accent and way of teaching made things very hard to understand or focus on. Test are difficult and I highly recommend reading the book and watching videos online. She gave a good bit of extra credit at the end after attendance wasn't mandatory if you still went which helped a lot!
Dr. Karasky is an decent professor. She sometimes struggles during lectures with her consistency; however, just read the book, it's pretty simple stuff. She's super available outside of class, so just read the book and ask her questions in private. Tons of extra credit too! If you don't miss more than 3 classes, you get 3% added to final grade!
Do not take her. If she is your last option (as she was for me), fine, you'll survive. But choose literally any other option. She is very difficult to understand, speech wise, and she's rather rude. Class is easy enough to pass, I stopped going to anything but the tests (and days where scantrons are given out for practice tests.) Stay away.
Hoda is literally the worst professor I have ever had, would never take her again and honestly if you can drop her without taking the w I highly recommend that.
She was hard to understand, because of her accent. She did not try and make any of her lectures clearer for you to understand. I should have switched classes at the beginning of the year, but I did not think it was going to be this bad. I do not recommend her.
Hardest professor i've ever had. She gets mad at everything during class, and i could never really understand what she is saying. I could never really follow along with her lectures, i felt as if they were not very coherent.
This teacher will make you want to drop out of college. Very rude, degrading of students confidence, not approachable, lectures dont help since her tests are completely different than her lectures. Please find a new Econ teacher UA, youll save your self a lot of complaints and have a better reputation in the Econ deartment.
If you're ready to be berated for any question you ask, or for having to leave early, El-Karaksy is the woman for you. She has an affinity for her own handwriting, though it's not good. She says her accent is not tough to understand, but she's wrong. She does make class stupid easy though, with a ton of extra credit opportunities.
Horrible teacher and I could barely understand her during lectures. Also, the fact that she literally reads straight from the book, and gives no further analysis/explanation is pretty bad. NEVER TAKE HER CLASS!
Terrible professor all around.
Literally the worst teacher I've ever had. Take any other Econ professor
Worst teacher I have ever had. Extremely hard and her lectures don't make sense. Must go to class because of clicker. Won't know grade the entire time until the end. Awful, do not take her class
Definitely the worst professor I've ever had. The class itself was not insanely difficult and could be self-taught, so I ended up being fine, but her lectures were horrible. She was hard to understand, and if anyone had a question she just told them to read the textbook. She did give a lot of extra credit to make up for over half the class failing.
The material wasnt difficult to learn so I ended up doing pretty well in the class but the teacher is terrible. She is extremely generous with extra credit also. Extremely rude when answering emails/questions during lecture.
I thought I was going to fail this class but Prof Karasky gives tons of extra credit. Really easy to do well if you study normally
Not as terrible as everyone makes her out to be. Yes, she struggles in social skills. All these other people either didn't show or barley study. Put in the effort and she will notice, for example..... I made a 13% improvement from test 1 to test 2, she noticed and bumped it up an extra 10% more than the curve given to the class. Just study duh.
She is really bad. Should not be on staff. However, you can get an A if you work hard.
Do NOT take this class if you care about your grade. Extremely hard to understand at times. Can be rude when students would ask a question and then would get mad if people did not ask questions. Must go to class because of clicker points. Not a good teacher
She is a really kind lady, but she's not going to give you an A if you don't work for it. She wants to know who you are, so participate a lot so she will recognize you. YOU WILL NOT pass if you skip this class her tests are completely based off of the notes you take. And she also gives extra credit in class which will make or break your grade.
She is a great teacher. She provides many resources in order to get an A in the class. Have to attend most classes for the clicker questions. She is really caring and gives a ton of extra credit.
She's a nice woman, but it is so difficult to understand what she's saying the ENTIRE class time because of her accent.
Prepare to be yelled at for asking questions. Prepare to be yelled at for not asking questions. Prepare to be roasted if you make a mistake answering a question. Prepare to be roasted for not answering a question in fear of experiencing the true wrath of Hoda the Hun. Class is still Easy and sometimes its funny to see Hoda's blood boil.
I've taken a class before with her actually, this being my 2nd, and I can say one thing forsure-she Is consistent. That being consistently un-understandable, consistently aggressive towards students, and consistently teaches under the assumption the students already know what she's talking about (when she should be teaching it ). Avoid at all cost.
Before taking this class I saw these reviews and thought oh she cant be that bad. WRONG. I have had many bad teachers and she is by far the most horrible teacher I have EVER HAD in my entire life. Not only can you not understand a word that comes out of her mouth but she is unbelievably rude to students. Take any other option you can.
really not that bad. if u have taken econ before super easy A. never payed attention in class and got above a 100. tests r easy if you look over powerpoints. she curves tests so much, drops tons of clickers, and gives so much extra credit. grade goes up so much at end of semester. easy to do good in
She is completely unable to use the technology in her classroom and refuses to learn. The only thing she can use is the camera that puts her own handwritten notes on the screen, and her handwriting is terrible. She is also incredibly argumentative and refuses to take any responsibility when things go wrong. Come on UA do better.
Simply reads over the PowerPoint posted online in her class during lecture, but gives clicker questions for attendance so you have to go class. Also painfully butchers the English language daily making it hard to follow along.
Aside from a tough accent to understand, she simply reads the same slides that she posts online. Not only does she only read these slides with no further explanation, but it is almost as if she's trying to go as fast as she possibly can. She's not open for discussion on any matter and is very argumentative. Frustrating professor, but easy material.
If you are able to teach yourself and get outside help, the class itself isn't that bad. Her accent makes her hard to understand at times and she almost always has technical difficulties. However, you get bonus points on your final grade for attendance. With that being said I have a bad grade in the class so good luck.
Hoda is rude & belittles her students. If you answer a question, you better make sure its the right answer or she will embarrass you. She expects you to read and know the material before coming to class. Her tests are mainly notes. She crucifies you if you try, and if you dont try. Its lose-lose all around. She is not willing to work with you.
It is almost impossible to learn anything from her lectures. She is confusing and makes you feel very dumb for not understanding what is going on. Also, when the whole class gets a clicker question wrong she tells you to figure it out and doesn't explain anything.
Worse professor Ive ever had. Tough to understand, doesnt explain material clearly, Yells at students for no reason, and her tests are completely different than her practice exams and PowerPoint slides. There are in-class clicker questions which are usually confusing. I would rather drop out of college then take her again. DO NOT TAKE HER!!!!!!!!
I took Hoda for EC 110, but for EC 111 she got a lot more strict and grade heavy. If you skip class, you'll likely fail because she does clicker questions every class. Her in class lectures and practice tests are NOTHING like the tests themselves, which are often extremely specific.
Hoda really isn't that bad of a professor. Her accent can be hard to understand sometimes but in all honesty she is very straight forward about how things are graded you just have to make sure to stay on top of the work. I have had her for EC110 and now EC111 and both times she has given a decent amount of extra credit at the end of the semester
Can't understand a word she says and she's mean to her students in class. If she ask's a question and nobody knows the answer she just assumes it's because we don't want to talk and she gets mad and moves on to the next section without ever teaching the criteria.
she drops a ton of grades at the end of the semester, her tests are entirely based off of the lecture which follow the textbook very closely so youll be fine if you actually prepare for class. If youre talking in class or have your headphones in she will call you out for being disrespectful. gives good lectures if you sit up front and pay attention
Hoda not only inspired me to change my major but also made me want to drop out of college every time I was in her class. She has a heavy accent that makes her hard to understand, and even if you get past that she's not a good teacher. I had to teach myself most of the material. Only redeeming quality about class was she gave loads of extra credit
its the beginning of the year, so this comment is unchanged by personal matters. this is by far one of the worst professors I've had. each day you go in for 15-30 mins of clicker questions followed by a short power point. you can barely understand her and she won't wait if you don't get the notes. horrible professor.
Avoid taking her class at all costs. She has a very heavy accent and a quiet voice that makes it almost impossible to understand what she's saying. On top of that she tries to use technology in her class and fails 9/10 times. She then will yell at the entire class for collectively doing bad on a test like she's not the one that failed to teach!
She is super hard to understand and doesn't explain the material well. I had to teach myself for her class and her practice tests and lectures are nothing like her tests. The wording on test questions can be confusing. She yells at students and treats you like you are in middle school. Attendance is mandatory and if you're late you don't get credit
DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS. I was an econ major and now NO! I am smart.. Trust me... All our class test averages have been failing and theres a ton of homework and class clicker questions.. She just reads from the power points then the tests come out of no where.. Cannot understand a word she says... Makes test questions to confuse you and mix up
DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS!! Worst professor I've ever had. Clickers are huge on your grade, and you can't understand a word she says. Treats us like were ten and yells at us every chance she gets. WHATEVER YOU DO AVOID THIS CLASS AT ALL COST!!
the class really isn't that bad. you kind of have to pay attention a little bit, but she gives you practice exams which are pretty similar to the test. she is kind of mean and yells at her students alot but it is pure entertainment. econ is a hard class and if you take hoda either pay attention or look at the practice exam.
Drops lots of grades and has extra credit opportunities, but it was hard for me to learn from her lectures. I decided to read the chapters during class instead and that worked much better for me. Since I taught myself the material, I don't recommend her, but if you do take her it's not the end of the world if you are willing to put in some effort.
Hoda is a very hard professor. If you are looking for an easy A, do not take her. That being said, she does care about her students and wants them to pass, but it's a lot of work. You have to read the textbook in addition to showing up for class. She has a very thick accent but it's easy to understand after meeting with her in person.
Hoda is a great professor! She is very kind and teaches the material well. If you read the book and pay attention in class you'll be fine. Plenty of people complain about her but most don't seem to care about their education to begin with.
She is not a helpful professor at all. She teaches very fast and doesn't explain things well at all. I went to every single class and still had no idea what was going on
Listen here and listen close, do not, and I mean DO NOT, take Hoda for Econ. Her lectures are brutal, she moves through the slides when she is done with it, even if the whole class had no time to write it down. At times she can be rude and almost all the time you cannot understand her. You are basically going to be teaching yourself everything.
Very loose grasp on the English language. Rude and impossible to understand. Do not take.
Hoda is a great professor, and you really have to study in this EC 110 class. She is very nice and will help you if you need it. You have clicker questions in almost every class, so I would go for the credit. The test are kinda hard, but again study, take good notes, and go to tutoring.
She can be a little rough around the edges sometimes but she is not as terrible as everyone says. Go to class, take notes, do the clickers, and go to her office hours and you honestly should not have an issue passing. She is very willing to help you out if she sees the effort. She also gives a boat load of extra credit at the end of the semester.
terrribleleee
Can't understand her and she is very rude. Not too hard of a class but sitting through her lectures are unbearable.
Hoda El-Karasky is the most unpleasant, unkind, and deliberately rude teacher I have ever taken. She takes in-class clicker questions for a grade, and whenever the class does poorly on a question she insults them rather than considering her total inneptitude at teaching and that she aggressively belittles any person who asks question. DO NOT TAKE.
Her english is terrible-you can't understand anything she says. She moves through slides whenever she is done talking which is about 30 seconds, meaning you have no time to take notes. She is incredibly rude and unwilling to help most students. She counts clicker questions as a grade and people usually get them wrong b/c she is terrible at teaching
Terrible professor. Speaks English terribly and does not fully explain the problems on screen. You have to pay 100% attention to even understand what she is saying because her accent is so thick. Practice tests are not like the actual test then gets mad at the class when we do poorly. Requires attendance through clickers with questions. STAY AWAY
Honestly this professor is the worst I have ever taken in any subject. You have clickers every class period, so you cannot skip class even though going to class is a waste of time. Borderline impossible to learn anything from her. You will end up teaching yourself the material.
By far the worst instructor at UA. She is extremely rude, hard to understand, and does not explain material clearly. Expect 3-6 clicker questions each class, for which you are unprepared because she does not know how to teach. Practice tests are MUCH easier than the actual tests, so do not rely on them to gauge your understanding of content.
She cares deeply about making sure people actually learn the material, and she will not tolerate any bs from you. As she says, she wants to give you "the highest grade you can EARN". Be warned though she has a strong accent. I was able to adapt to it quite easily, but some people may have a harder time.
This class is not easy and you will not pass if you don't go to lecture. She has an accent, but if you pay attention and take notes it really isn't that bad. She is willing to help you if you ask. She scales her tests pretty well. You get to drop a test.
Take anyone but her. Prof El Karasky is impossible to understand in class and her written communication is not much better. You basically have to teach yourself from the book because she just stands in the front of the class and flips through slides. She is rude and condescending to her students. Worst class ever.
Hoda is the most condescending professor I have ever had. She has 4 exams, practice tests (sort of similar to the exams), gives bonus points for attendance & has a decent amount of homework. She has clicker questions each class and will yell at the entire class if the results aren't great. With all of this being said work hard and you'll be fine.
Overall, if you do your work you can easily get an A or A+. She does have an accent but it is really nothing to complain about, just sit closer to the front. Biggest complaint is that she is very condescending and rude to students. However, if you are EXTREMELY nice and polite, she will be mostly nice back.
She is very rude. Avoid if you can, but if you take it don't read the book. Do the homework early and stay ahead and actually listen to what she says because she will actually say some helpful stuff
just don't ever take her class.... EVER. You will not retain any information and you will have to teach yourself the whole time. Seriously shouldn't be a professor.
Barely speaks english, moves too fast, absolute terrible teacher and half of our class is failing.
She uses clickers so you have to go to class. The book explains things far better than her lectures ever will. Tests are fine if you understand the materials in practice exams (answers are on Quizlets). Shes actually pretty pleasant if you ever see her during office hours.
Her accent is not as bad as these comments would have you believe. Uses tricky exam questions. Very nice during class, however, I went to office hours before and I would recommend only use the TA's as she was very condescending. Honestly just take the class at your community college in the summer.
You need to buy the book because all the homework is on cengage. Attendance is mandatory because of how much the clicker questions factor into your grade and the class is SO boring. It's hard to understand her accent and even harder to pay attention because the material is confusing. Take Zirlott!!!!
Don't take her, I'm sure she's a fine lady but she is not a great teacher. Her lectures are so boring and she can be a little stern. There is clicker so you have to go to every class.
People like to complain about her, but honestly if you show up, take notes, and do the homework, you will be fine. Her expectations are very clear from the start.
She is a terrible professor! Very mean and not a great speaker at all! She grades tough and don't expect her to help you at all. I emailed her a couple of times to review my test and she never let me come to her office. Take another professor if you want a easy and good experience!!
This class was very difficult. You couldn't understand her when she was lecturing. I didn't feel like I learned anything in this class. Tests were difficult and a lot of the times you didn't know what to study. She isn't very nice either.
Cant understand, incredibly rude and rough.
Very sweet lady, however, she was very hard to understand at times. I did fine in the class due to YouTube videos posted by another professor at this university.
She's really tough on you if you talk or do anything out of line in class to the point where its annoying
Worst professor at this university. She is rude to students, inaccessible out of the classroom, and her lectures are horrible. Take any other professor.
Hoda is lucky that EC110 is one of the easiest Econ classes you can take or else all of her students would fail. What should be a somewhat easy introduction to mic economics becomes an aggravating class. Archaic teaching methods and treats college students like kids. Talk about being rude with a huge sense of superiority when I could teach better.
