Very Hong Kong style way of teaching. Often reads out from the notes, but very well prepared + helpful

so so prof
Organized and neat. SUPER helful. Whenever you have a question, she would not hesitate to try her best to help you. I highly recommend her because she is clear, precise on expectations and most of all, she's helpful!
Neat notes...not very hard exams..out of 30 she marked exams herself
well since i'm awful at math i found the course hard, however Eugenia was an awesome prof. very well organized, explained things thoroughly.
Extremely nice, well organized. Very neat and clear notes. Just need a good formula sheet to do well on exams.
Notes were very clear and organized. Could add more life and personality to lectures, but other than that, not bad.
notes are really clear. Goes at a steady pace. Always making sure her students are understanding the material. Class materials are very easy to understand. Great instructor!
This is a GPA booster course; Eugenia made everything very clear and the course itself is easy. Her notes are extremely neat and she would not hesitate to answer any of your questions inside or outside of class. She's a very kind person.
Eugenia is very clear - easily understood, which is good; and the notes are concise. However, Eugenia always hesitated to answer my questions, as I asked many questions that were beyond the scope of STAT 200 - she likes to keep things overly simple, which is good for non-stat majors, but I happen to be a statistics major!
She's awesome! Super easy class. She's really clear. Definitely recommended.
She's nice but the lectures are quite boring and focus more on formulas than concepts. Also, has a tendency to write really fast on the board in order to finish the material for the lecture, without slowing down to make sure the students understand.
Eugenia's very clear in class, and her explanations about the material we learned is good as well. If she went faster at the beginning, we would have rushed less towards the end, though. Nonetheless, she did her best with time management; I was one of the ones who slowed the lecture down anyways because I asked a lot of questions.
Hey folks, this is not an easy A course! Not a GPA booster course either. She explains everything in a clear way, but is always too rushed in an hour lecture, not to mention the dry materials. Her midterms are not easy, but tricky.Class average is about 60.If you aim for a high score, take the same course with another professor, seriously. good luck.
She is a wonderful professor. Class materials are difficult if you are new to statistics, otherwise it is fair. Class average is about 60% so don't expect a good grade.
she is nice and makes everything clear. if you have some background on statistics, this course should be easy for you.
She talks very quickly and it is sometimes difficult to keep up. However, she is pretty clear in her explanations if you are able to make out what she is saying. Seems very knowledgeable. The exams are challenging but mostly fair. She could improve by spending more time going back and reiterating the concepts.
Very easy to understand. She will take time to explain if you dont understand a concept. First midterm, super easy just make sure to read the question thouroughly and study and youll do amazing. Second midterm, harder, spent less time on the harder material. But she is a really good professor. Sometimes wording is hard to follow, not proper english.
super good prof. I would recommend taking her courses. She reads off her notes a ton which is the biggest weakness of her class. If you don't like that aspect of a teacher and prefer hand written for majority of notes I would recommend someone else. However, she is always willing to help and puts in tons of effort.
This was my second class taught by Eugenia, the first being stat 200. Her lectures are easy to understand and she provides summarized lecture notes for each chapter, which she then follows in class. She is helpful and receptive to questions. What's more, course notes are provided for 251, so no textbook is needed.
An excellent prof overall. She is very, very clear, steady, well-prepared, and approachable. The biggest flaw is something that is beyond her control - it's introductory statistics guys, it's not supposed to be super entertaining. Give her a break. Other than that she's a very effective instructor and her exams are fairly easy.
Her lecture notes are pretty good and clear but she is super boring. the subject matter is somewhat useful, and she is helpful, but man is it hard not to fall asleep when she's talking!
One of the best profs around. It's hard to make subjects like statistics interesting but she did it. Her notes are so clear, and she provided many examples for us to practice. Midterm was easy and final was fair. I recommend people who needs Stat 200 to take it with Dr. Yu. She also made me interested in stats. Nice & Helpful too!
She was arguably the most clear, responsible, helpful and thorough professor I've ever had...so much that I almost felt like I was sitting in a high school classroom. She made statistics much more interesting for me than I initially thought it could be, and her exams are fair. Definitely a top notch professor!
I went by the ratings and took the class with her, and i have nthn else to say than DONT TAKE IT.....terrible proff, made what was supposed to be easy really hard, her accent makes it hard to understand her.TERRIBLE PROFF
Clear and concise, even with the accent. I found the material inherently boring, but she was animated enough to keep my interest. If you need stat, take it with her
She has one of the best teaching methods ever! Her explanations are exceptional and she simplifies the difficult concepts in a way that anyone can understand! No need to buy the textbook (she even says so herself) Her notes are so well written and simple to understand that you don't even need the text! Reminds me of a very nice high school teacher.
AMAZING PROFESSOR! One of the best I have had at this university- no doubt. I think someone below mentioned she was horrible and not to take her... please ignore that comment. It does not get better than this. I HATE stats and math but she made it enjoyable. Her writing is super neat and she is always willing to help. TAKE HER CLASS!
AMAZING PROF. Incredibly nice, extremely helpful outside of class, presents material clearly and in an organized fashion. Definitely the best Stats prof. Midterms harder than other profs, but worth it since the general final is a killer.
BEST PROF EVER! Clear, concise, and cares about her students, making sure that everyone grasps the key concepts before moving on to the next chapters. Her examples and demonstrations allow you to understand why statistics is relevant, teaches you how to apply the material, and even makes class fun! If must take stats, take it with Eugenia!
She is a pretty good teacher, and definitely willing to help. She cares about her students.
I really enjoyed having Eugenia as my prof for STAT 200. Her notes were great summaries of the textbook. They were clear and concise, and had exactly what you needed to know on them for the webworks, written assignments, midterms and final exam. The midterm this year was pretty easy, but the exam was quite hard.
Really helpful and clear during lecture and during office hours. Coursework is light - online homework and two assignments, all of which are pretty easy. One of the few profs I've had that genuinely cares about her students. Beware her midterm, though - it brings down your guard for the difficulty of the final! Overall, an amazing Stats prof.
She's nice and pleasant but sometimes she makes things unnecessarily confusing.
The course material itself was not difficult to understand, and she made it even easier. Her lecture notes are ridiculously neat and extremely helpful. I didn't even have to buy the textbook.
The best professor in UBC! Kind, helpful, intelligent, wonderful teacher (I could go on). I would highly recommend that you take her class! Our midterms and finals were fair because she wrote them. It's also great to meet her during office hours because she can effectively provide explanations to your questions. Highly recommend to take her class!
Her notes are extremely neat and clear. The course load is light and assignments are pretty straightforward. I'm taking another course with her next term!
Eugenia's lectures are clear, interesting, and applicable to real life! She ensures that all students understand the concepts, and tries her best to give extra help. Midterm and final are fair - but make sure you keep up with the practice problems!
Eugenia is an excellent professor and turns an otherwise boring subject, interesting. Her notes are very clear and it helps to print and follow them along in class. She also takes time to answer your questions properly and gives clicker questions to make sure you're following along. I would definitely take a course with her again :)
very very clear, organized, responsible prof. tell you and teach exactly the learning outcomes, very good examples. I hope there will be many practice mts for to prepare the upcoming mt :) !!!!
I took stat 200 and stat 302 with Eugenia. She's an excellent prof. approachable and patient. Notes are clear, exams are not easy but fair.
Hands down, the BEST PROFESSOR EVER.
Her lectures are amazing but you must attend them since the things she mentions in class are very important. The TAs and her are there for you when you need help. The course itself is pretty difficult if you do not pay attention to the minor details but she makes it easier by doing a large amount of sample problems in class.
One of my favourite profs at UBC. Came out of 1st year hating math so I dreaded this class, but she made stats fun. Excellent, easy to understand lectures, and very helpful during office hours. Like any other math course, just don't skip a single class or you'll be lost. Didn't use the textbook at all. Thought the final was easier than the midterm.
One of the best profs at UBC. You would not need the textbook, well organised way to teach the subject which makes the learning all the more easier. Her lectures/slides/examples are all easily understood. Her exams would not be anything out of the ordinary and thus very fair in nature.
attend lecture and prepare wiz ur ipad pro & appel pencil. :
She's the best honestly, I can vouch for her teaching any day. She genuinely cares about your learning and she makes everything so accessible and easy to understand. I didn't have one bad thing to say about her. She is hands down the best.
I got 53 on my midterm rip my gpa
Explains things very well. Really helps students understand statistical concepts. You may find the material boring but she tries to make it interesting! Her lecture notes are amazing. So much that you don't need the textbook at all.
She's an amazing professor. Explains everything carefully in detail and clears up any misconception. Like others have said, you do not need the textbook, her lectures notes are great! Just make sure you attend the lectures and take notes and you will be set.
Eugenia does NOT post annotated slides, so the best way to study is to print out the blank slides before each lecture and take notes during class. DON'T skip class. Beware - exams are worth 75% total although there is only the final (50%) and one midterm (25%), so do well on them!
Eugenia is an awesome professor. Her lectures are clear and concise. She explains the toughest topics in an easy-understanding matter. If you stuck, just come to professor hours and ask the right q's (but make sure that you tried to solve the problems first). She's caring and helping. Wish UBS has re profs like her.
She gives amazing lectures! If you are preparing for SOA exam, she is the best choice! Her lectures make connections with actuarial exams. As long as you do all the suggested exercises, you will be fine!
I'm not very good at math, but I did really well in this class. Eugenia is probably the best teacher one could have for a stats class. She is very clear, caring, and gets that this stuff is hard. Honestly, if you have to take stats, there's a high probability that she'll be able to get you through with a decent grade :)
Very good lectures and you could tell that she genuinely cared that everyone understood the material. She would always pause the lectures and make sure that everyone was on board before moving on. If you ever had a question she would worlk with you until she was sure you understood.
This prof had the audacity to not post inked notes so thats why im sitting here during class not paying attention but giving her this rate. If a student misses class or wants to review at home they do not have the option to look through inked notes, which she does a lot of.
Why all the good reviews? She does not post (most) inked notes and all iClicker Q&A, has v. minimal office hours, and gives relatively little Piazza help. Test policy: miss the midterms for legit health/etc. reasons, but still have no makeups (all the weight would transfer to the final); I for one would never be able to perform under such pressure.
I had her for Stats in the summer and she's been extremely nice and clear about what you need to know for a test. The in-class worksheets were helpful for applying lecture content and are not too hard. She doesn't post annotated slides, so definitely take notes in class. If confused at all, she'll happily answer your questions.
Had her in the summer. She had pretty concise notes, so buying the textbook isn't a must. Just go to class for important details/how to solve problems, but if you zone out, it's not the end of the world (personal experience). Great prof, would take another stats course with her again.
out of all the professors I've ever had at UBC between Arts, CPSC, Math and STATS courses, Eugenia puts the most effort into teaching hands down! She makes her slides incredibly explicit and clear. She really wants to make sure her students know the material. You can honestly forego the book if you attend classes.
She's great - I was terrified going into STATS because math is not my forte. However, her lectures are super digestible and she puts in a lot of effort to make sure you understand the material. There are weekly assignments and 2 larger assignments, and participation counts for marks. Midterms were pretty fair, but the final was tricky.
I cannot express how thankful I am that I got Eugenia for stats. I'm not a math person, but she made everything so easy! Her notes were incredibly precise, and she builds on the material so skillfully that learning is almost effortless. Her assignments, quizzes, clicker questions, and worksheets are perfectly tailored to solidify her teaching.
She's a pretty good prof and explains concepts in depth. Has a clear layout of what will be on the tests; weekly homework assignments involve exactly what we learned and provide insight about what will be on the tests. Don't forget to do the assignments because I struggled with that. Not bad even for a non-math person.
Great professor who teaches very clearly, is very accessible and cares for the well-being of the students, exam fairness, and our learning. Would take another class with her in a heartbeat.
The professor was very kind and helpful. The course however, I struggled quite a bit as there were alot of weekly homeworks and assignments that were time consuming. On top of that, I'm not too strong in my math skills. The first half of content was easy, but second half I got completely lost. Midterms were difficult.
She is super patient and helpful and you can tell she really cares about her students understanding the material. Her lecture notes are also super easy to read and detailed. All in all super great prof!
Dr. Yu has really clear slides and lectures, and it's easy to follow along. Sometimes the content is challenging but she cares for her students so there's plenty of resources to help you out if you're struggling.
Great prof. I really struggle with math but she explained things decently so this course was bearable. Uploads really good quality lecture recordings which I appreciated a lot for days you couldnt make it to class. Would take her again!
As someone who is math aversive, I was super glad to have had Eugenia as a prof for this course! Readings were not required as her lectures were more than sufficient enough, and she provided recordings of lectures the term I took the course which were extremely appreciated.
Extremely organized lessons, concepts presented clearly. Midterms/final were reasonably difficult, however, the written assignments and webwork were not too tough to balance the scales. My only feedback would be for a lack of extra practice outside of webwork for the final, the 2 practice finals posted were not enough in my opinion.
Eugenia is the hands-down the best prof I've had at UBC so far! She ensures everyone understands the fundamental ideas behind each model. She also goes through numerous in-class examples which are very similar to exam questions. Only thing to watch out for: the midterm/final were much harder than the practice exams provided.
Eugenia was a really good professor. Her lectures are super clear and she ensures that students understand the material before they leave. Make sure you write down the examples in class because those are crucial in understanding the notes/lecture slides. Midterm was alright but the final was crazy.
This is my second stats course. I absolutely hated the first one with a different professor. Professor Eugenia is caring and is an amazing teacher who genuinely cares about her students and how they do. Made the course 1000x easier.
One of the best-structured courses I've ever taken at UBC! The lecture slides are super clear and students can well understand how dispersed knowledge fit into one another. Prof Eugenia is caring, approachable, and frequently stops to make sure everyone is on the track before going on.
Eugenia should be designated a national treasure of UBC. A soothing voice like Bob Ross, caring, great at explaining things, accessible on Piazza and after class. Great at time management, organized. Slightly inspirational. A bright-eyed, curious person.
Couldn't ask for anything more given the clear slides and strong sense of direction with this summer course. Good at keeping things professional and orderly and organized and on-time.
Such a sweet and caring woman. Eugenia is an amazing lecturer, goes into material thoroughly and makes it make sense. She also has great in-class activities that help you grasp the material. Stats courses are obviously no cake walk, but if you have Eugenia and put in some effort, you can succeed!
THE BEST UBC PROFESSOR I EVER HAD HANDS DOWN.
I LOVE EUGENIA SO MUCH! She's not only a super organized and well-spoken professor, but she also has a bubbly personality and a big heart for her students. I was dreading for stats but she made it my favourite class for the semester. No one else can explain statistical concepts as well as her
Easily one of the best professors I've ever had. She explains topics concisely and clearly and has great lecture slides. Yu + TAs are available for xtra office hours before midterms and the final as well. She also usually prepares in class activities and Clicker questions, which is way more helpful than just lecturing us on the material.
Genuinely such a great person and professor. This was my first data science course ever, and she explained all the concepts so clearly and was so patient and encouraging to everyone in the class. She made it clear what was expected from us for all the assignments, projects and exams. Favourite professor at UBC!!
Eugenia does a really great job explaining DSCI concepts, and her demos are very helpful. DSCI isn't really a strength of mine but I'd be happy to take another course with her!
She's pretty good but takes forever to fully explain things, we had a sub one day and I think she was able to explain the concepts much more concisely.
Very kind and a caring lecturer. DSCI 100 is an easy class, but gathering the motivation to study is an unfortunate byproduct of its straightforward nature. I crammed for each of the major tests (midterm 27%, final 50%) one day beforehand and still ended up with an A+. If you can bring yourself to study, this class is well worth your time.
super easy course and very nice prof! legit just use the worksheets and read the textbook to study day before the final and you'll do fine :)
