Dr. Donze is a great teacher, but her lectures and slideshows seem to be constantly mixed up. Ultimately if you buy the book and study what she does give you, you'll be fine. Definitely focuses on understanding the material and application of those in case studies. Would recommend if you were interested in med school or research.
Makes everyone participate in class with name notecards that she randomly pulls from and puts you on the spot. Lectures are somewhat confusing. Tests are mostly essay and application based. The only good thing is that the class is out of 1000 points so there is a little wiggle room if you mess up a test or something. It's a lot of material.
This class was easy. Just write a paper on what you want to do and you're good as long as you follow the rubric and don't plagiarize. Dr. Donze is my favorite professor because she truly cares about her students. She has answered emails at midnight about a paper or a class suggestion or a schedule freakout. She is amazing. Take her for anything.
Dr. Hale-Donze has unclear lectures and will upload different lecture slides to Moodle than she covers in class. She requires you to read chapters before every class using a McGraw-Hill program that is laggy, difficult to navigate, and frustrating. Most of the questions on the test do not ask about the material pertinent to the section.
Dr. Hale-Donze's test were not completely cohesive with the material she taught in class. She would tell us to pay attention to certain information for the test and then have 0 questions on that topic. This is a lecture/lab class, and the lab isn't bad, just her lecture is. She talks about random stuff so we are always behind on tentative schedule
Slides almost always out of order or missing. Test questions not like Connect or anything from the material. Pulls from stack of notecards to call on people.
Would never take Hale-Donze again! Her slides were always out of order and missing important info! Her tests did not reflect the information we went over in class and the homework we did. She is caring and interested in the subject matter, just a terrible teacher. This was the first class I have ever had to drop.
If I could rate this prof as a 0, then I would. Powerpoints are provided but her powerpoints in lecture are completely different bc she adds a tremendous amount of info that won't even be on the exam. Anytime she says, "this will be on the exam..." don't believe her b/c it won't be. Expect the worse. Sweet lady, but not a great teacher.
Dr. Donze is passionate and knowledgable about micro. The class is not easy. If you put in the time and apply yourself, you should do fine in the course. She gives a good amount of bonus on tests and is available when you need to ask questions.
You can tell that she enjoys what she is talking about becuase she goes off topic about different things that she finds interesting. That means that she rarely gets through what she needs to cover that day. You have to know the topic inside and out for the test. Like study days in advance and memorize hundreds of slides. Very caring, hard class.
I loved immunology! Dr. Donze was an amazing professor and was really knowledgeable about the subject. The tests were completely fair and the class was very interesting. Dr. Donze left an impact on me i will never forget. Thank you for an amazing semester!
She's a nice person but this class is the worst. She also made us pay $90 for top hat and didn't use it the entire second half of the semester. Her tests do not accurately assess the knowledge you have gained from attending lecture. It's hard to focus in class because she rambles and jumps from topic to topic. overall bad and would never take again
Dr. Donze is a great person who genuinely cares about her students and loves teaching micro. She teaches off PowerPoint slides and does tophat questions in class (this is part of your grade). The only problem is she tends to have material on her tests that don't relate to what we went over in class. Just study a week in advance and ask questions
Very friendly- HOWEVER, she is the most unorganized professor I have ever taken. Posted ppt slide are different than what she goes over in class. She constantly interrupts herself and doesn't finish thoughts. You have to read if you want to pass but chapters in book hard to relate to her lectures. 10/10 don't recommend.
Most UNORGANIZED professor I've ever had. Ppts: unorganized/Extremely hard to follow/Don't match up with ppts used in lecture. Lectures: Her SPEACH is even unorganized! Mumbles a lot/spits out random words & phrases that we supposedly have to know with no explanations/cuts herself off when speaking. Be prepared to teach yourself. Avoid at all cost.
I don't know how we are supposed to succeed. For the last exam we were given 400+ slides/5 chapters which is fine. BUT there were 61 slides on the lac operon and 1 exam question on it- 15% of the material we studied counted for 2% of the grade. The antibiotic chapter was covered heavily and we barely scratched its surface in class. Frustrating.
Huge disconnect between lecture materials and exams. Her lectures are all over the place and very confusing. Assignes a significant of HW each week that are irrelevant to the exams. Highly not recommended.
Very unorganized with lectures. Sometimes she wouldn't finish a lecture and then would still ask about that info it on the test. Tests were unnecessarily complicated. Not helpful outside of class.
Micro is going to be a beast regardless of who your professor is. Good luck!
I have never seen a teacher as unorganized as her. Lectures were very difficult to follow and it seem like she didn't know the materials very well or was just very unprepared. The biggest problem is that her lectures have very little to do with the exam materials.
She is a terrible teacher and seems very lazy. Most of the classes were composed of busy work and pointless/irrelevant activities. Whenever she lectures, she ends up confusing the class because she can't explain complex concepts. Exam questions were very random and you never know what to expect.
Worst class ever. Lectures were confusing and unclear. PowerPoint were loaded with mistakes and missing info. Took forever to post exam grades.
The biggest problem with her class is the inconsistency between the lectures and exams. She would lecture heavily on one topic and then tests on a completerly different topic. In addition to reading a very confusing textbook, she would add a tremendous amount of materials after each class that you have to learn with no explanation.
Dr. Donze is very nice and she cares about those who try hard, but her teaching style makes it very difficult to learn the material. The powerpoints jump around a lot and it's very hard to keep up. Lab is SO hard as well but not impossible, you just need to put in a lot of time to study.
Honestly she just sucks. Nothing good to say, don't take her, there's so many other professors just don't take this one if you like a good GPA.
Dr. Donze is the most unorganized professor I've ever had. Her lectures jump around quite frequently and leave you lost. She does Top Hat for attendance and Wiley for hw. Exams are super specific and as confusing as she is.
Dr. Donze is great! She is very knowledgeable about immunology and tries her best to get you to understand a tricky subject! This was by far one of the hardest classes Ive ever taken though. She makes you work for your grade, but you will learn!!! I loved this class a lot!
This teacher is not as bad as rate my professor makes her out to be. She is very helpful and willing to give advice. Her tests are fairly easy if you put forth the effort and she gives a ton of bonus on the final and each lecture exam. Her lectures are somewhat scattered and confusing so it requires you to really read the book
Immunology is already a difficult subject and she makes it even more convoluted. Lectures are very confusing and she doesn't seem to know what she is talking about half of the time. I learn most of the things through reading the textbook and teaching myself the materials. Nice lady though.
Professor Hale Donze is very caring but her lectures are difficult to follow. She is very vague and doesn't seems knowledgeable on the subject as she jump from topics to topic randomly making it difficult to understand. Probably the worst teacher I have taken in term of teaching.
Not a good lecturer. Power points are long, confusing, and contain tons of extraneous info. Tests on specific, unimportant throwaway lines from the slides.
Gives loads of Powerpoint slides for each chapter yet if you want to study for the exams, there is absolutely nothing in the slides that helps you. Expects you to study a ton of slides AND read the textbook for a good grade in the class. This is one of "those" professors that gets mad when you leave to go to the bathroom.
Incredibly hard class. Her lectures are messy, confusing and irrelevant to the exams.
AVOID AT ALL COSTS. I read the ratings & figured I'd be okay since I liked biology. I was WRONG. Her tests are extremely specific, yet her notes & exam outlines/expectations are EXTREMELY vague. Lectures and powerpoints are messy and all over the place. It's difficult to articulate how awful & confusing she is. VERY nice lady, but AWFUL teacher.
Dr. Donze is very knowledgeable about Immunology and she keeps up with modern developments in the field. I noticed other comments on here and that is why I am writing this. Look, go to class and ask questions if needed. Everything is in the PPT and she is always available outside of class. You put in the time and the rest is easy. Great professor.
She really knows what she is talking about. Yes there is a lot of material, but it builds on each other. Im not sure where the other comments stem from, but her lectures are informative and pretty clear. You will have to study to pass, but its a really neat field and she does a great job teaching about it. Definitely recommend taking her class.
I am a typical B student and I have done very well in this class. Her exams are very straight forward and she is very encouraging. The only reason that people say the class is so hard is because they don't put in effort. It is a lot of material but her powerpoints are more of an outline and you need to use your textbook.
Ms. Hale Donze is an okay teacher. She is very nice and enthusiastic about the subject, but she doesn't teach much and tend to go on a tangent a lot during lectures. Just be prepare to dedicate a lot of time to the class.
She was one of the laziest teachers I have ever taken. She wasted so much class time talking about random stuffs that are completely irrelevant to the exams. If you asked her a question during office hours, she would never give a direct answer. I was very disappointed because I really enjoy biology but her teaching was terrible.
Do not take her for any class. She spends more time worrying about tophat questions and calling people out in lecture than she does actually teaching. Uses different slides in class than what she puts on Moodle and makes it hard to keep up and take notes. She designs her tests to trick you and make you second guess yourself. AVOID AT ALL COSTS!!!!!
She doesn't teach. All she does is randomly call out people using her name cards. In lectures, she will tell the class to focus heavily on one topic and then tests on a completely different topic. Expect you to know hundred of slides without ever teaching the materials. Terrible.
I would have learned more from a Potato than this teacher. The class is just her going on tangents and then making the student google the terminology you need to know because she is too lazy to update the powerpoints. I would recommend anyone to her because she is by far the worst professor LSU has to offer.
This class is a struggle because she is an incredibly lazy and unorganized teacher. Besides the Top Hat participation points, the lectures are almost pointless because she mostly rambles and calls people out randomly. It is basically a self taught class.
This is by far the worst professor at LSU, avoid this class at all cost. One of the previous comments said " I would have learned more from a potato" this was an understatement. THERE IS A ZERO PRECENT SHOT ANYONE, UNDER ANY CIRCUMSTANCES ANYONE SHOULD EVERY TAKE THIS CLASS!!!
While she isnt the best at relaying info to students during lecture, she means well. Participation is necessary & calls names for bonus points towards the final. Test were relatively straightforward(50 MC w 5 bonus). Put in effort to study & skim through txtbook-there should be no problem passing/excelling. I was scared to take her, but glad I did!
She is such as lazy and unorganized teacher. Classes are composed of 90% useless activities/note cards/her going off topics and 10% of actual teaching. When she actually teaches, it will be on things completely irrelevant to the exams. The materials are not necessarily hard but the lack of teaching makes this a very challenging course.
She is not as bad as RMP makes her out to be. The notecard thing people complain about is BONUS added to your final (this helps!). I found her exams to be fair, though a bit challenging at the beginning. She is one of the most caring people you'll meet. She wants you to succeed and tries to help your grade because she knows the lab is very hard.
This is by far the worst professor I have ever had. She is a very sweet woman who cares about her students, but has no idea how to teach this class. I sometimes think about wrecking my car when driving to this class. You have to read the book and teach everything to yourself. Good luck if you can't teach yourself.
Her class has absolutely no structure. The powerpoint are confusing and overwhelming. She doesn't explain anything. Exams mainly focus on very irrelevant stuffs that she never taught or covered in lecture.
I was lost the entire semester. She rambled through the whole lectures so you dont know what is important or random information. When asked a question, she would go in circles without answering the questions. I never know how to study for her exams due to the extremely messy lectures.
Dr. Donze is a caring woman and she is really trying to do her best. That being said, I would rather go into lab and eat everyone's E. Coli cultures than take this class again.
Dr. Donze is nowhere near as bad as students make her out to be. Her exams are all multiple choice and she doesnt test on anything outside of her PowerPoints. She offers 10 bonus points on your final just for attempting one question and the final isnt cumulative. Do the practice problems on Wiley because theyre similar to her exams.
Worst professor at LSU hands down. Not helpful at all. When emailing her questions she doest know how to explain things to you when you ask her. Emailed her once and asked her why my grade dropped in the class 12 points for no reason and she couldn't even explain it to me. Grade dropped after I took a quiz and got a 100 on it. Do NOT take her!
Okay look her test are easy if your just memorize EVERYTHING in your notes and know how they connect. She as a teacher though is awful. She is all over the place and is always rambling about the most unimportant things. She can not answer her own questions half the time. she talks in a low voice too. She spends most of class calling people out.
This class is TOUGH. Donze is scatter brained. However, she cares deeply for her students and their personal life. She does what she can to give you extra help.
Immunology: This professor is very caring, also she wants to be called just Dr. Donze. The material in the class is not that difficult, but the powerpoints are scatterbrained and you need to memorize them, esp. charts. The exams are a combination of short essay, fill in the blank, and diagrams. There are case study assignments that take some time.
Dr. Donze does not give the best lectures, but she is a quality teacher if you put any effort into the class. For the students who want to do what it takes to get by, good luck. For those who want to learn the material and are fine with going to office hours, it turns out to be an easy class. She will always be there to help in any way she can.
I personally thought Dr. Donze was very accommodating during this Covid semester. She definitely could have made this class much more difficult than it was. She gives atleast 250 points of homework that really help save your grade if you do not do so well on the exams. She is a very nice lady and clearly cares about her students.
I mean I had her for SCI1001 and she was the best. All we did each class was talk about how to be a good student and she offered us resources. Assignments were given a week to complete and were easy. Take her if you need this class she's the goat
Dr. Donze is passionate about the upper level courses she teaches. The feedback on her 2000's level courses doesn't make sense when u take her 4000 levels. She likes teaching them more so she makes it more fun and does a great job. All memorization. Only two exams, all the rest are easy A projects. Homework is watching monsters inside me. Take her!
Pros: Study the slides and youll get an A. Shes a very good professor and she understands that university can be challenging and she sympathizes with you. Extra credit. Cons: none. Side note: may seem like shes all over the place but shes just excited to teach and I guess she gets lost in the excitement.
Her tests were not easy but compared to the lab they were a cake walk. She does curve them a bit and theres bonus. The class felt like it was designed to challenge us in a way that wasn't arbitrary. Its a 4000 level class so its gonna be difficult, but it felt like a productive kind of difficult and not just the usual biology-rope-memorization.
Class is 2 tests, a quiz, a few small homeworks, and a final exam thats a written case study. Tests are short and long answer, matching, and multiple choice. Made a spreadsheet of parasites and it was helpful for differentials during the tests. She tends to spend more time on things and hint at whats going to be the long answer qs on the test.
Dr Donze was very sweet and her class was very interesting so I would take it again. 2 tests and case studies as a final. My only issue was that she seemed very scatter brained. My roommate was also in this class and when we would compare our test grades one of us would get 2/10 points and one would get 7/10 points for nearly the exact same answer?
I was worried at first since I heard bad things from other students. She is super sweet and seems to care about her students! However, she seems a little scatter-brained and gives us a lot of extra information we don't need, which made studying harder. There's a group project and a few bonus opportunities. Not a bad prof, but not the best either
Donze has no idea what she is doing in the class room. Scatter brained styled lectures, no clear focus on any material, jumps between broad and specific topics expecting students to be familiar with all of the material. Never introduces or explains anything, simply touches on them and explains how they are "important". Time for her to retire.
Donze is extremely scatter brained and jumps all over the place. She always says we will go back to cover a material she skips and she never does. Get ready to teach yourself. Tests are not like what she says in the syllabus. If you don't take the lab with the lecture, you will be very confused as to what is going on.
Dr. Donze cares about her students success. Her exams are short answer, but she gives mini case studies in class and emphasizes parts that she really wants you to understand. The exams are hard, but they are fair for a 4000 level course.
The most sporadic professor i have ever had. Her exams for this course were just impossible. I took her for BIOL 4105 and it was doable, but barely.
Yes, she is a "tough" professor to take, but not crazy for a 4000-level course. Her tests are all short answers, which can be to your benefit or detriment depending on how you study. She gives a ton of partial credit, even if you have an incorrect answer. Details matter to her, so be the STEM sponge you are and study hard. *Good for MCAT prep*.
Just avoid
The actual information is not hard in this class, there is just SO much.. She gives you all of the information in her lectures, but it is certainly a lot of information. She does give bonus for coming to class and on the tests. There are two group projects, but they are easy and done in class. The final is a paper, so it helps with finals week.
SO unorganized. No empathy for extenuating circumstances. 3rd test was 3x the normal material we had on a normal test and half the people I know absolutely bombed. She really just didn't care. I thought this class would be more exciting but I quickly grew bored and tired. Had a high A all year only for it to tank after that 3rd exam. Just don't.
Dr. Donze is a little all over the place. She is really nice and caring, but wasn't the most effective lecturer. Exam 3 was brutal compared to the first two exams in terms of material. I really liked the class in the beginning, but then it just dragged on.
Would be better if it was MWF instead of Mon for 3 hrs. This makes it easily brushed off. Though its so long, there isn't enough time in class to go over all materials. What she does go over in class is very brief and self teaching is crucial. Disorganized and all over the place (herself & the ppts). Final was changed to 2 projects which were easy
Dr. Donze is a kind professor. There are group assignments each class period that can be completed in class. There were 2 tests, and I would recommend studying a little bit every day if you want to do well on these. There are some bonus on these tests. Final exam was replaced with a final project, which if you work together as a group is simple.
4-5 exams, drop the lowest score. No quizzes or homework. We do case studies where we come up with diagnosis and submit it as a group by a deadline. No final exam. We make a PSA video about some disease and that's our 'final'. Dr. Donze is very kind and can talk for days lol. Class is super interesting! If you like medical stuff, TAKE THIS.
This class is bragged about being an easy A/A+. This class is geared strictly for biology majors. Assignments aren't hard once you learn the grading style of your peer mentor (grades everything). Group project will either be the easiest thing if you're grouped with people of similar interest or extremely difficult because of misfits.
Dr. Donze is very sweet and wants students to get involved as much as possible. If you meet her expectations for the reflections and the group project, you'll get an A easily. However, I just did not enjoy her teaching style and would have preferred someone different.
class is very hard. STUDY STUDY STUDY. bombed the first test with a 66 and then studied two weeks before the exam and got a 97. 3rd exam is sooooo much information. final is a paper and presentation with a partner and is due before finals week which helps. does random class attendance. go to class to listen to her helps so much. just study!!!
Changing this class name from Becoming a Scientist to Becoming Depressed would be appropriate. Not a single student in my class enjoyed this course. Complete waste of time. Peer mentors are horrible role models who grade terrible. If you do not get a good peer mentor, then I feel sorry for you. Be respectful to Donze or she will get angry very fast
I was very hesitant of taking Dr. Donze from other reviews but honestly I ended up loving her. The tests were all written besides maybe 3 multiple choice questions (tbh I found harder than the write outs). Study all and every ounce of material to excel on the exams. She gives bonus on exams if you give enough info! Go to class, I learned lots!
Technically mandatory attendance, and I would recommend going, but if you're someone (like me) who does better without attending, then you can still do just fine. Requires a lot of studying due to lots of material, but she is a very fair grader and any info she asks on exams will be in her powerpoints. Be sure to study a lot, every detail counts.
Dr. Donze did a great job at explaining a very complex topic! This isn't an "easy A" class, but if you are willing to go to put in the work then the class is great. Def map out the information. Her exams are very fair in terms of content and points. She gives lots of bonus points if you explain a topic very well in a short answer question.
Thought previous reviews were exaggerating. I'm a straight A student. 100% regret taking this class. She is rude, not knowledgeable, won't acknowledge when she's made a
Reviews are terrible for a reason. Her class is super disorganized and it makes studying for the exams harder. I never had to drop a course until this class. She teaches as if you should already know what she's talking about. Exams are completely short answer with no multiple choice. You will not pass unless you do great on every exam.
Funny and nice professor. 3 Exams, Peer-review final. Ngl, sometimes, she would have us cover material on our own. Material is mostly memorization about parasite infectious states, and pathology. If you don't start early, the material can sneak on you. Takes attendance w/flashcards, makes you write facts about yourself.
She is all over the place and can never stay on one topic. Would tell you to study a particular topic and then tests you on something completely different. The grading is also very inconsistent and you never know why you got a particular grade.
Don't take her at all. Worst professor at LSU. She doesn't know what she's talking about half the time and is one of the most unorganized people I've ever met.
I heard horror stories about this class, but I really loved it. I studied after class, and really tried to enjoy the material. 3 exams, a peer review final (easy points), and she isn't a rough grader imo. She actually gives extra credit when you write more than she asks on fill-in-the-blank exams. She is unorganized, can't lie.
Dr. Donze takes a really interesting subject and turns it into a train wreck. Her unorganized lectures and terrible slideshows (which are copied from Google) confuse you when studying already difficult material. She purposefully pronounces words wrong in class to add to the confusion. She ruined this experience for me and I regret taking the class.
Dr. Donze is a good professor, but the class is just tough. Do not let the reviews scare you. The tests are not horrible if you study in advance. There are a lot of parasites to memorize, but if you study her power points in depth, you will do good! She will sometimes give extra points on tests if you include specific details.
Dr. Donze is a sweetheart and is incredibly helpful! All SRC students should interact with her and get to know her! Easy work for this course, just stay on top of it.
