Very good teacher. Her tests are short answers and 1 or 2 essays. There are writing assignment throughout the semester, so reading is a must. She makes history come alive. I enjoyed the class!!!
Good professor very interesting and very helpfull. If you attend class regularly she will give answers for tests.
There are quizzes every week, so reading is a must. DO NOT PLAGARIZE, she LIVES for the opportunity to catch someone. In general she is really nice and funny, I'd recommend her!
she is a extremely hard teacher. She is not helpful at all. Her quizes weekly are useless and impossible to get 100%. DO no take her!!!She rushes in her lectures and does not give you a review sheet.
Out of all the capstone teachers, she is by far the best!!! Helpful, clear, and knows the subject well. All lib Stud students have to take this class and trust me it SUX! so to make it easier on you, take her as your teacher. Must do ALL the readings and homework. Speak up in class and you'll be her fav.
This was a hard class, but I actually learned something. She is not an easy grader on the papers or homework. You have to participate in class or else you will lose lots of points. I found it hard to speak up in class because she is a bit scary. If I had to take this class again I would probably take it with someone else.
A great Professor. She was very understanding and provided many opportunities for me to complete the course. She has a great sense of humor too.
This lady claimed she didn't want to "spoon feed" us the information when in reality she did not feed us any information at all. She expects you to basically teach yourself the information through class discussion. She is an extremely hard grader and unwilling to compromise. I would highly recommend avoiding her and taking Lewis instead.
She is very clever and keeps lecture interesting. But don't be fooled, she's not for the faint of heart! She will WORK you. She expects you to remember all of the info in the readings when you get to class and the prompts on the essay tests are really in depth (she gives them out ahead of time). You have to do all the reading to get a decent grade.
she was cool. she makes lectures more interesting than ive seen other professors. the class requires a lot of assignments and reading but if you keep up and stay engaged in lectures, youll do alright, overal shes a nice lady and she seems enthused to be there, so thats nice
The work load is a bit daunting at times (LOTS of reading, response papers, 4 papers with lesson plans) but you will learn alot of valuable information from Prof. Schillig! i thought she was extremely helpful (intimidating at times but verry funny/energetic!) you HAVE to read and participate. don't miss a paper building session! they help soo much
The class is a lot of work... and do not think the take home quizzes are easy because they are far from it. She is very helpful if you ask. There is a lot of reading, but if you do it, it makes the class easier. I thought the class was interesting, but some did not. Bottom line, read! Take your time on quizzes, and go to office hours!
In order to pass this class you NEED and MUST keep up with the readings. You cannot slack off in this class or you will pay the consequences. So as long as you attend each class meeting and be prepared to discuss the readings you will benefit from this class. So be prepared because it is alot of work, but if you keep up and do everything you'll be
this class was pretty interetsing. teacher is somewhat intimidating at first glance, but it's only because she truly expects the best of everyone. tests are hard and mainly essay related (she gives you the essay questions beforehand). online quizzes are part of hw and they are not simple! reading is a MUST in order to get a decent grade.
Do not take her!!!!her beachboard quizes are extremely hard!!!worst teacher ever!!!...
the people who say that she is hard didn't try. she's a good teacher if you're willing to be a good student. she teaches with passion and heart. i learned a lot in this class. online assignments are hard if you don't do any work whatsoever. if you do the reading (which is reasonable) and go to class, you'll be fine.
this class is really hard. before the semester started i read her ratings and was really scared of this class. there is 3 exams which are essays and maps and 1 essay. there is also a lot of online quizzes which are pretty hard. class attendance isnt mandatory AS LONG AS you do the readings. otherwise you will be lost. she is a hard grader!
Schillig is GORGEOUS. That's all i really have to say about her!
she reminds me of kathy griffin.... in a good way. her jokes, facial expressions, reactions... she's very kathy, i love it!
Intimidating, scary, overwhelming, but you learn a LOT. Always leave with an overload of information but it's great.
This class was truly the hardest one I have ever taken, but I certainly do not regret it. Yes, her quizzes are hard, I only passed 1 of them, but she's also there to help you. I took the opportunity of going to her office hours and ended up with an A on the midterm. She does her best to help you get your desired grade. Take her! It's worth it.
Dont take her class. She makes lots of jokes. The online quizzes are very hard. She makes you read like 5 different books through the semester.
This class is very overwhelming and a lot of work, but she is amazing. You truly learn so much from her and she is always available to help with anything you need. The books are necessary and there are online quizzes, but SHE IS AWESOME!
This professor is honest and tells you exactly what you need to pass. If you go to class (which is easy to do because she has quite the sense of humor) and take notes then you should be fine. The textbooks are absolutely necessary and helpful all at the same time. She is willing to help you when you need it. I definitely reccomend her.
WONDERFUL TEACHER!! Had her for hist./geol. 250 and loved her then, so I planned my sched. around her class LST 471. She really goes above and beyond so you can pass her class and more importantly understand the info.Literally you can email her your signature assignments before they're due and she helps you. WONDERFUL teacher, just need to try :)
IT IS WORK, BUT SHE MAKES YOU REALLY THINK ABOUT HISTORY AND OPEN YOUR MIND TO NEW IDEAS. ALWAYS READING ASSIGNMENTS AND EXPECTS YOU TO READ IN ORDER TO PARTICIPATE IN THE LONG RUN IT IS WORTH IT
great teacher alot of work but expected. you retain a lot and she makes history bearable. gives you all the resources you need to succeed, talk to her she is awesome and will help you get the grade you deserve! When she says read you better do it because she will call you out. dont go to class if you are just going to try and sleep you'll regret it
Don't be afraid. It's alot of work, but you can do it if you try hard. She's a hard grader, but you learn a lot. You will love her class, and history subject. I recommend her to all of my collegues. You will love her class, I promise.
Hollie Schillig is by far the best history teacher I have ever had in my entire life. I was super intimidated the first day of class, and don't get me wrong this class is A LOT of work, but she really does make the subject super interesting. If you are a liberal studies major you have to take this course and with her so don't be afraid! It's great!
Fantastic Professor!!! She makes history come alive! Very energetic and interactive. Weekly textbook quizzes but no tests other than the final. One midterm paper, but she helps you out a lot. Enjoyed coming to class.
she is a wonderful instructor! her course is not easy, but she gives you all the help you need. i probably learned more in this course than i have in any other history course. Awesome instructor!
Schillig is pretty funny and sarcastic. She's not an easy grader but she is a fair grader. Make sure you don't have a busy schedule because this class will take up all of your free time.
She is a good professor in terms of her teaching methods BUT she is a hard grader. You have to really try in her class. Don't even think about slacking. There is a lot of work but it's doable. Attendance is MANDATORY. Buy all books. Overall, she is a fun person. You can bs your way through this class. I barely passed because I missed a lot of work.
I would absolutely recommend her. Her lectures are insightful, passionate, informative, and entertaining. I love hearing her lecture. She's challenging in a good way and expects you to be engaged, not to just sit there. One of the best educators I've come across.
You'll do good in this class if you have high analyzing skills. Lots of reading that have to be read multiple times to get the answers and discussions that she wants.
Doesn't take late work, hates it if you are late or absent, but she will be late or absent at any time. The only warning you get that class is cancelled is an email right beforehand. Most of the students are scared of her. Gets very angry if you leave before she gives permission, even if class should have ended 15 minutes ago.
She's very funny and she really knows her material. The problem: Maps were impossible to do (but she grades easily). Honestly this class is a TON of work. You have to have a lot of time: weekly quizzes, weekly short papers, lots of busy work. But she grades very easy. Does not accept late work and is very strict about this. Attendance is required.
Her lectures are very interesting and informative. She makes you think about history rather than remember facts. Her work load in the beginning is a little overwhelming with the readings and the class discussions, but it gets easier after a month.
Prof. Schillig has amazing lectures, participation matters, and she is readily available for you if needed. I took her in spring 2015, and taking her again for HST 471 capstone. Be prepared to do maps work locating, coloring, and labeling ancient civilizations. I love her enthusiastic approach to learning. She makes to tie geography and history
Professor Schillig is very fun and interacts with the class rather than giving boring lectures. If you show effort she will be there for you. Attendance and participation in class is important. Hardly any homework, just small mandatory article readings before each class. No tests just a debate and a couple essays.
Professor Schillig appreciated those who appreciated her. She is looking for students who wish to think critically. And she cares about those who think outside of the box. Do not go to class and expect to get away with only listening.
Amazing professor. Great sense of humor and enjoyable course. Work load is A LOT. Would be great to take if having an easy sch, but other than that. AVOID. Lots of homework/reading. Great lecturer and keeps class fun, but hard assignments. She deff knows her stuff, so you won't get anything past her.
Since this was a liberal studies class, her passion for teaching really came out. She might come off a little strong but dont be intimidated. She likes class discussions so be prepared for the readings assigned. A calendar in the syllabus has all the assignment due dates for the whole semester which is helpful. 2 essays, debate, &group presentation
The online modules are like your whole grade, so definitely read. If you can figure out how to do well on those, you're golden. Her class is mostly points based and she gives credit where credit is due. Do the work, and you'll get a decent grade. If you don't show up she doesn't take attendance but your grade will probably reflect it.
Schillig really knows her stuff but makes it impossible to talk to her. She degrades her students and makes approaching her absolutely terrifying. Class time was spent doing daily projects/busy work. She grades easy on the projects but the majority of your grade comes from the online modules. Do good on the modules and you will be pass easily.
She really doesn't teach anything at all in this class. You have to complete a project about every day on class but it all felt like busy work. She hardly lectured. She did lecture the last week of class which I thought was great because I was able to make connections with the content. Just wish she would've lectured more throughout the semester.
You have to read a lot every week and actually know what it said. There's a notebook entry at the start of every class that she grades and she's looking for stuff you probably didn't get out of the reading. One big project and essay at the end and no tests.
Dr. Schillig is the most energetic teacher period. She makes learning fun and interesting. There is a lot of tedious work (over 1,250 points total). 900 of those points are from online modules. She is very nice and easy to talk to. She is very honest and is extremely funny. I highly recommend taking her. The work is tough but you learn a lot.
She's very picky with what she wants and is always giving work. This class requires that you ACTUALLY read the material and do the work. Although she is strict, she does give extra credit; take those opportunities. You have weekly assignments that require in-depth responses. You'll be working in groups the whole semester. She's an awesome woman!
Professor Schillig is a very good professor and she cares a lot about the subject she is teaching. I had her for two different classes and she was awesome in both. But don't think not showing up for class and doing all of the work will let you pass because it won't.
Extreme amount of reading in the beginning and then toward the end the class gets easier. She's a funny and entertaining professor, lecture is never boring. She's a good choice but come prepared and make an effort
Yes its a ridiculous amount of reading but you get a lot from it and she's a pretty hilarious professor. Lectures were never a drag. Overall great human being
She is a very laid back prof., very funny and makes class interesting. Homework is just reading notes, you have 3 papers throughout the semester that are easy, and a group presentation final plus a final paper. She is passionate about what she teaches and opens your eyes, just an annoying grader.
She was an amazing professor. I really enjoyed this class. We had a lot of readings but it was all online. Although readings really help if you're trying to be a teacher. She helped open my eyes to the reality of public ed. I highly recommend her to any liberal studies student or any student trying to be a teacher. Also she cancels class a lot.
Professor Schillig made 9:30ams fun and was a pretty chill professor. She tells you exactly what she expects in the syllabus and explains assignments very well. The Mock Trial was my favorite overall because of how tense the Vergara v. CA case got. You'll get it when you take her class, trust me.. take her!
Take her she's intimidating, fast pace, but funny, clear expectations, great at lecturing but doesn't do it much . Go to class, do your hw. Per wk: a chapter, two online practice exams, and the exam, plus an extra credit short response. You fill out map worksheets too. Easy class, but the work is time consuming, plan ahead. Lots of Extra Credit.
I loved this professor, she is very straightforward with her expectations. You will have homework due before every class but you just have to read articles and either annotate or take notes on them and come to class ready to discuss. No tests and the projects and essays (3) were very easy. Overall this is a good class to take to get a GE done.
Took her for history 250. Fairly easy class. Just read and do online modules. Test was memorizing facts so you need to study. Showing up to class is mandatory - many assignments are in class. When you buy access to the module on McGraw, that gives you a digital textbook, so just use that to read.
This class is completed mostly by yourself, you have readings and online quizzes every week which help with learning the material for midterm/final, and many in-class projects that can end up being homework. BEWARE, she can be HIGHLY unapproachable. She's very educated and knowledgeable about history but she has little patience and very wry humor.
Be prepared to never ever miss class or your grade will suffer and studying is a must. She is a really difficult grader. If you get anything less than an A on your modules, you will not get an A in the class. She is also very strict about being on time. She is funny but also very harsh most of the time. Honestly, she is very scary...
AVOID AT ALL COSTS! Inconsistent with attendance. Get ready to have random assignments thrown at you. If you know your way around online modules you'll be fine, but still stressed. Even if you are organized, you will not be. Prepare your soul for assignments to be thrown at you. You'll have to dedicate your life and soul for this class.
AVOID TAKING HER! There is daily readings and annotations due each class. We have 3 essays. No exams or quizzes. She is a tough grader. I was afraid to even ask questions. She makes you feel so dumb whenever you ask anything. She jokes around way to much; her comments come off as rude but she thinks its funny. save yourself!
She's honestly a horrible person. Don't take her and save yourself the pain. I have never written a bad post on this site because I don't believe in that. I do now. She sucks. She shoves her ways down your throat. you mostly teach yourself anyway....
Love her as a person, she gives a lot of work but it was a great class to take. If you do the work you should pass.
Professor Shillig is intimidating at first, but if you show up to class and really try then she's not bad. There are online learning modules every week that take a while, and a midterm and a final. She gives tough love but she truly cares about her students and wants them to succeed.
Professor Schillig is absolutely amazing and genuine. I have the utmost respect and admiration for her as a professor and person. She has high standards for her students but at for an upper level class, you should already be self motivated and ready to take on any project. Her classes are never boring and she has a great sense of humor.
The class I took was a hybrid, meaning we only met every other week so it was difficult for her to really do what she had in mind, but she managed to work around those obstacles. She was intimidating at first, but I had no problems with that (especially being the shy person I am). She really cracks down on the details of your essays (grammar).
Professor Schillig has a very clear grading criteria. Her study guides really prepare you for the exams. She wants you to succeed. Her class is engaging and fun. I learned so much about historical geography in her class. She is very professional and inspirational.
This was a professor that was enjoyable to a certain extent. There are no tests but there are online tests you do through the textbook online. You do in class projects and work with other classmates. You will be able to learn history and how to interpret for your students. We only did 1 essay, super hard because she can be extra about her grading.
Fast paced class with a lot of in class assignments (assignments aren't tough just time consuming). Each week you have to read the book and answer roughly 100 questions on the chapter, for a grade. She's really big on working in small groups in class, so if you aren't there, you won't get the points. She is very knowledgeable and helpful.
I took this class over the summer and it was a lot of work. However, Professor Schillig is an amazing professor who really knows how to teach. You just have to power through the readings and show up to class and try your best, and you will pass. Notebook check every class meeting, midterm paper, final paper, and final powerpoint presentation.
Took her for summer. Shes super chill and wants to see you succeed. Do ALL the readings and youll be fine
The professor has a "strong personality". Her words. She's also horrible at explaining and giving directions. Directions for assignments were always vague and confusing, and she'd show visible and vocal expression after students would ask for clarification. There's weekly online reading and exams, be prepared to spend 3+ hours a week on homework.
She was fine, just very blunt & rude. The class is A LOT of work. Doable but tedious. She was a tough grader on essays. There is a HUGE midterm assignment where you work with a partner. Honestly, a lot of her assignments are confusing and she is not helpful. When you ask questions she makes you feel dumb, calling you out in front of the whole class
Anyone that says that this teacher wants you to succeed is delusional. She is extremely rude to students and kicked a student from class for using the bathroom. She doesn't teach and relies on the smartbook to do the teaching for her. Would never recommend her for any class she teaches.
Loves to say she has a "strong personality" but that's just her excuse for being a complete -. Also, if you have to take her cuz there's no other option, get all those textbook assignments done quick (quizlet) cuz she stacks assignments like you have all the time in the world.
She isn't great - she assigns lots of homework and is not as understanding as other teachers. She isn't very clear and when I emailed her asking for clarification, her reply was to do exactly what was listed in the directions, which were unclear and she had to clarify to the entire class the next session. She's nice though, wants to be your friend.
If you want a decent grade in this course, you are really going to have to work for it. The readings are quite long and necessary to read to complete the assignments thoroughly, so there is no way of getting around them. She also expects you to have your camera on during class meetings. Overall the class is not easy but is doable.
I really regret taking her class because she gives a lot of readings. Almost each reading takes 2-3 hour. She is a tough grader. She gave me my first D ever on an essay because I supposedly didn't use enough evidence(I used two evidence from each reading). Her final project is a bit hard and i am currently stressing about it. She isnt much help.
You will have to work for your grade because there is little work but are worth a lot. All the work you do is to prepare you for the final. You have to attend class or you will miss a lot of the material. She does not record the few zoom classes.
Prof Schilling is such a better teacher than I anticipated. Due to these review I put off this class because I was scared it was going to be really hard. But she is super understanding and only grades a few assignments really hard. Most class work is group work and if you are there, you'll get 100% She dropped a lot of assignments this semester.
It is a love hate relation with Hollie, she isn't totally awful, but definitely not my favorite. You have to get on her good side in order to do well in the class. Do not be afraid of asking questions even though she is terrifying. You'll survive the class and build bonds with classmates. She contradicts herself a lot.
At first, I was uncertain of taking this course due to these negative reviews. After taking her class this semester, she is not bad. She is one of those professors who never make lecture boring. Her lectures are interactive and engaging. Her assignments are very doable. Your only job is to get them in on time because she does not accept late work!
She has her favorites and if you're one of them, she's a lot easier on you. She cancelled lots of classes & asking for leniency yet cannot do the same for students. She doesn't have that respect, but you better be accommodating for her. Not a lot of homework; one assignment due every Sunday through an online textbook. Final is a group project.
Took Schillig FALL2022, her personality is difficult, she can be incredibly rude. A good amount of reading for in-class activities, you can't make them up if you missed those days, my class was hybrid. The final is a presentation project, instead of a huge essay for exams, she lets you answer questions in paragraphs. Assignments are similar to that
OMG the amount of reading in this class has been like no other in my college experience. She prides herself in being tough and this class is basically boot camp training towards being a History teacher. Which IMO is ridiculous since most of her students are going to be elementary school teachers and not History Majors.
Professor Schilling is a really nice person she makes class fun and makes sure you're actually learning something in a fun way. I never liked history and it's always been a hard subject for me but this was the first time I was actually interested in what's happening in class. she's a hard grader a little she has 3 sets of maps you will need to do.
Took Prof. Schillig for L/ST 250; great class with engaging lectures. However, L/ST 471 was a mistake. She is great at history, terrible at teaching how to teach it. I had no personal problems with her yet I still found her super unpleasant and condescending in general. As for the work, it is not as hard as she claims it is, just lots of reading.
I enjoyed Professor Schillig's class. I thought she had good ideas about teaching history and the assignments made sense. We only had one short paper due every 2 weeks, and for the final we were given an entire month to work on it. She's not a tough grader at all, you'll get the credit as long as you do the work and follow directions.
A lot of work done in class so go to class. She does not take late work. You have to purchase the textbook in order to do assignments. 3 big map assignments that are a lot of work and points so don't procrastinate. One online assignment every week through the textbook. Professor Schillig does lecture but her energy makes them interesting.
As a person, you either love or hate Professor Schilling. In my eyes, she is the best history professor I have ever taken at CSULB. There is some workload but she grades you very fairly and it is attainable. Her lectures are engaging and there is never a time where I was bored in the class. If you pace yourself, you set yourself up for success.
Talks too much about her politics and disrespect veterans students. Claims she is military friendly because her brother was in the Air Force but loves to assign genders to students on her roster. Very uncomfortable semester with her as a "professor '.
Schillig's class is no walk in the park, but her engaging lectures and interactive approach make it worth the effort. Use Unstuck study and the textbook to stay on top of the challenging assignments. Overall, a rewarding experience for history buffs.
The class itself was manageable, but it could be a lot at times. She can come off as a bit passive-aggressive, but she was pretty understanding and does respond to emails. I loved her enegry and she made class go by really fast. Chapter readings and labs every week, but she gives plenty of time and help in class for assignments.
